Minor leaguers D’Shawn, Kristian on ‘most underhyped prospect’ list By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net BAHAMIAN minor league baseball players continue to get recognition from acclaimed media outlets for their projected progression through the league. Bleacher Report sought out to identify each Major League Baseball team’s “most underhyped prospect” for the upcoming 2019 campaign. D’Shawn Knowles (Los Angeles Angels) and Kristian Robinson (Arizona Diamondbacks) were both selected to the list for their respective clubs. Knowles, who celebrated his 18th birthday yesterday, progressed from the Arizona Rookie League to the Pioneer League in just 30 games last season. “The Bahamas has become a prospect hotbed in recent years with the likes of Kristian Robinson, Jazz Chisholm and Lucius Fox making a name for themselves,” said the Bleacher Report analysis. “Knowles looks destined to follow the path they’ve forged after hitting .311/.391/.464 with 21 extra-base hits and nine steals in 58 rookie-ball games,” the Bleacher Report analysis said. “If everything goes right, he has the profile of an everyday centre fielder who hits for a solid average, steals some bases and develops good gap power. The Angels will need to be patient, but he has the tools to prove worth the wait.” After 30 games in the Arizona League, Knowles received his first promotion within the Los Angeles Angels farm system. Through 30 games in the AZL, Knowles hit .301 with a .385 OBP, .765 OPS with 14 RBI, 19 runs scored, seven stolen bases and one home run. He was assigned to the Orem Owlz of the Pioneer League and continued his production for the

Robinson, 18, is one of three Bahamian prospects in the Arizona Diamondbacks organisation alongside Jazz Chisholm and DJ Collie. “If you’re not familiar with Robinson, get ready to see his

name all over top-100 lists this spring,” the Bleacher Report analysis said. “Making his US debut as a 17-year-old, he hit .279/.363/.428 with 12 doubles, seven home runs and 41 RBI in 57 games spanning two different rookie-ball stops, and he’s just scratching the surface. “With the potential for 60-grade hit and power tools and the speed to steal double-digit bases and stick in centre field defensively, he looks like a star in the making. His $2.5 million bonus as part of

the 2017 international class could prove to be the best money the D-backs have ever spent.” He missed the playoff run with the team he spent the bulk of his rookie season with, but his progression in the Diamondbacks farm system provided a new opportunity late in the season. In 40 AZL games, he hit .272 with a .754 OPS, .341 OBP, 31 RBI, four home runs, 11 doubles, seven stolen bases and scored 35 runs. Robinson was then assigned to the Missoula Osprey of the Pioneer League. With the Ospreys, it took just seven games for Robinson to record the first multi home-run game of his professional career. In 17 games with the Ospreys he hit .300 with an .886 OPS, .419 OBP, 10 RBI, three home runs, five stolen bases and scored 13 runs. His promotion to the Ospreys began with a head-to-head matchup against D’Shawn Knowles and the Owlz. Robinson finished 1-4 with one run and one RBI while Knowles was 2-4 with three runs scored in a 7-3 win for the Owlz. Following the conclusion of training camp in March, Robinson, listed as the No.12 prospect in the Diamondbacks organisation, was invited to extended spring training prior to the regular season. Along with Collie, Robinson helped the AZL D-backs to clinch its first-ever playoff berth in the Arizona Rookie League. The Pioneer League operates in the Rocky Mountain region and in the past, it also operated in adjoining portions of Canada. It is classified as a rookie league, and is staffed with mostly first and second year players in a short-season league operating from June to early September. Robinson is hitting 2.73 through seven games with six hits, seven runs, six RBI, three stolen bases, slugging .591 with a 1.019 OPS.

CHINA’S ZECHENG DOU WINS WEB.COM TOUR OPENER GREAT EXUMAS, Bahamas (AP) — Zecheng Dou birdied the final three holes yesterday for a two-stroke victory in the Web.com Tour’s season-opening Bahamas Great Exuma Classic. Dou shot a 2-under 70, holing a 55-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th at Sandals Emerald Bay to finish at 18-under 270. Three strokes ahead entering the round, the 21-year-old Chinese player rallied after bogeying three of the first six holes on the back nine. Dou earned $108,000 for his second Web.com Tour title. Ben Kohles (64) and Steve LeBrun (65) tied for second, and Steven Alker (66), John Oda (70), Rob Oppenheim (68) and Willy Wilcox (69) were another stroke back.

Both league leaders in the BAISS, the St John’s College Giants and Temple Christian Suns, notched wins and improved to 7-1 yesterday afternoon. The Suns blew away the CW Saunders Cougars 83-61 at home on the Suns campus. Christian Sturrup scored a team high 19 points, Dayton Albury scored 18 and Taleo Bethel added 12. The Cougars got 21 points from Eric Butterfield, while Giovanni Ferguson and Tahj Sands both scored 12. The Giants also defeated the Jordan Prince William Falcons. In the GSSSA, the Dame Doris Johnson Mystic Marlins defeated the Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves 79-74 in overtime at the AF Adderley Gymnasium.

Saints – 70 Cheetahs – 39 The Saints improved to 5-2 on the season and remain in second place in the standings. Leandra Armbrister scored a game high 23 points on an efficient 10-14 shooting from the field. Shadell Williams finished with 10 points,

eight rebounds and four steals while Tanica Joseph grabbed a game high 10 rebounds and Vernisha Moss added nine points and seven rebounds. Amir Thompson was the lone Saints player to reach double figures with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Trenice Comarcho had four points and nine rebounds. The Cheetahs scored on the opening possession but the Saints quickly took the lead for good and took a 14-9 lead at the end of the first. They took a 10-point lead in the second quarter on a Taniel Poitier layup for a 23-13 lead with 3:31 left in the half. The

Saints limited the Cheetahs to single-digit scoring in both the first (nine) and second (eight) quarters and took a 27-17 lead into the half. They took a 45-28 lead into the fourth quarter and the lead grew to as much as 31 points. The Saints shot 53 per cent from the field while they limited the Cheetahs to just 20 per cent. They recorded 20 assists on their 29 made field goals. They also outscored the Cheetahs by 10 points in the paint and 20 on bench points. Bees Trucking Destroyers – 60 Connectors – 44 The league leaders remain undefeated on the season and

improved to 7-0 with another lopsided win. A balanced scoring effort from the Destroyers was led by Rudy Simms and her 14 points with eight rebounds. Sherelle Cash had six points and 10 rebounds, Britenique Harrison had eight points and nine rebounds while Ashley Moss had six points and a game high 11 rebounds. A shorthanded Connectors team got 10 points from both Denisha Dean and Tiffany Wildgoose. Christine Sinclair finished with nine points and nine rebounds with five assists while Kristenique

Moss had seven points and 10 rebounds. The Destroyers limited the Connectors to just 12 points in the first half. It was a quick 15-8 lead after the first quarter and they allowed just four points in the second half en route to a 26-12 halftime lead. The Connectors staged a comeback effort in the third when they outscored the Saints 20-8. They opened the quarter on a 12-2 run and a Wildgoose layup brought them within two (28-26). The Destroyers took a slim 34-32 lead into the fourth but responded with their highest scoring quarter in the fourth (26) to put the game away.

ECASC president leads federations at joint meeting in Colombia BURKET Dorsett, the president of the English Speaking Softball Confederation, led the ECASC federations in a collaborative effort with the federations of Latin America, the Spanish-Speaking Caribbean Canada, the United States and all members of WBSC Americas softball for a joint meeting in Cartagena, Colombia. Dianne Miller was appointed as secretary general of ECASC to complete the term of former secretary general, the late Greg Christie. Other appointments included Glenford Murdoro of the British Virgin Islands who was appointed director of umpires and Shomara Penn, also of the BVI, as a statistician in the office of the president working with Paula Stubbs, special assistant to the president. Discussions were also held on how countries can access the solidarity funds from PASO to assist in their developments of official players, coaches, administration and equipment. Each federation had a one-on-one meeting with the WBSC to express their needs. Ted Miller, president of the Bahamas Softball Federation, represented the Bahamas and conveyed their needs to the WBSC. In compliance with the new WBSC softball policy, softball and baseball will merge in several countries. There were four more tournaments added to the world

Warriors rout Nuggets after NBA-record 51 in first quarter By The Associated Press DENVER (AP) — Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson each scored 31 points as the Golden State Warriors, propelled by an NBA-record, 51-point first quarter, regained the top spot in the Western Conference by routing the Denver Nuggets 142-111 on Tuesday night. Golden State cruised to a fifth straight win to move a half-game in front of the Nuggets, who had their 12-game home winning streak snapped. The showdown between the top two teams in the conference proved a little too big for the Nuggets, with Curry and Company putting on a shooting exhibition all night long. The clinic began early with the Warriors erupting for 51 points in the opening quarter, breaking the old mark of 50 held by several teams. The last time it happened was also against Denver when Phoenix scored 50 on November 10, 1990. Golden State shot a blistering 60 per cent from the field, had 38 assists and hit 21 3-pointers in leading wire-to-wire. Kevin Durant finished with 27 points and Draymond Green was a plus-41 as he had 13 assists to go with four points. Malik Beasley finished with 22 points for the Nuggets. Big man Nikola Jokic struggled with early foul trouble, finishing with 17 points and eight assists in 23 minutes. 76ERS 149, TIMBERWOLVES 107 PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Joel Embiid had 31 points and 13 rebounds, and Philadelphia scored 83 points in the first half in a thrashing of Minnesota in Jimmy Butler’s first game against his former team. The Golden State Warriors were the only team to

score more first-half points in a game this season when they dropped 92 on the Chicago Bulls on October 29. The Sixers hit a teamrecord 21 3-pointers and reached their highest point total in the 22-year history of the Wells Fargo Center. Butler scored 19 points in the first meeting with Minnesota since it sent him to the 76ers in a package deal that brought forwards Robert Covington and Dario Saric in return. Covington and Saric were popular core pieces of Philadelphia’s Trust the Process rebuild and both received massive ovations from an appreciative crowd in tribute videos. HAWKS 142, THUNDER 126 ATLANTA (AP) — Trae Young had 24 points and 11 assists to win the showdown of past and former Atlanta point guards, leading the Hawks over Oklahoma City. Former Hawks point guard Dennis Schroder scored 21 points in his return to Atlanta. Schroder struggled early but had 14 points in the third period when the Thunder outscored the Hawks 41-27 to reclaim the lead. Atlanta was similarly dominant in the second period, outscoring Oklahoma City 45-30 to match its high mark for any quarter this season. After holding a big lead of 15 points, the last time at 70-55, the Hawks led 70-59 at halftime. John Collins made 12 of 14 shots from the field and led Atlanta with 26 points. Alex Len had 24 points and 11 rebounds. The Hawks were 18 of 37 on 3-pointers. Russell Westbrook led the Thunder with 31 points and 11 assists. Paul George had 24 points and Jerami Grant added 21.

Indiana limited Devin Booker to eight points in 26 minutes. Rookie Deandre Ayton finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. T.J. Warren led Phoenix with 18 points and Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 16 points off the bench.

LAKERS 107, BULLS 100 LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lonzo Ball scored 19 points, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 17 and Los Angeles won for just the fourth time since LeBron James’ groin injury, beating reeling Chicago.

Ball, who also had eight rebounds and six assists, scored 13 points during the second half as Los Angeles was able to break open what was a close game for the first 28 minutes. Brandon Ingram and Kyle Kuzma scored 16 apiece.

The Lakers are 4-7 since James was injured in a December 25 game at Golden State. Jabari Parker scored 18 points and Lauri Markkanen added 17 for Chicago. The Bulls have dropped eight straight.

Big flex: Youngsters Tiafoe, Fritz stun seeds in Australia By HOWARD FENDRICH AP Tennis Writer MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Frances Tiafoe rolled up his white shirt’s right sleeve, flexed his biceps and slapped the muscle five times. Then he pounded his chest and yelled, “Yeah! Let’s go! Let’s go! Come on!” Forgive the young American’s exuberance. This was, after all, the biggest victory of his nascent career.
