Bahamas Baseball Association is governing body By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net fter helping to steer a resurgence in the sport over the past 15 years, the Bahamas Baseball Federation has decided to cease all operations and allow the Bahamas Baseball Association to carry out its mandate as the governing body. BBF president Teddy Sweeting confirmed through a press release that during their annual general meeting on December 2, the membership agreed to the following: • Suspend all national operations until the Bahamas Baseball Association’s elections are held in 2020. • Encourage all baseball leagues (members of the BBF and non-members) to seek

membership in the Bahamas Baseball Association. • BBF to support the BBA, wherever needed, with the hosting of the 2018 National Baseball Championships. When contacted for further clarification, Sweeting said it was a hard line decision, but one that they all agreed to in the best interest of the sport. “We wanted to take a look at the constitution in respect to amending the constitution so that once members join, only members will be allowed to vote for the leadership,” Sweeting said. “We got them to amend the constitution and now we want them to go and properly set up the process so that members can now join and get ready for the next election.” As a result, Sweeting said the BBF has decided to cease all operations and will allow the BBA to

TEDDY SWEETING function as the governing body on the local and international scene. Since the BBF was formed in 2003

with Greg Burrows serving as the initial president, they were able to host a successful national championships and carried a number of junior national teams to compete in various international competitions. However, the federation, which had Craig ‘Salty’ Kemp serving as its second president before Sweeting took over from him, was not able to get into any of the major international tournaments like the Central American and Caribbean Games, which ultimately lead into qualification for the Olympic Games. As the governing body for baseball in the country, the BBA, under its former president Jim Wood, who passed away in December 2014, still held the international sanctioning. Since Wood’s death, Sam Rodgers has assumed the leadership of the BBA. He served as the interim

president before he was voted in during the last elections held in 2016. Over the last two years, the BBA has been working on bringing all of the fractions back under their fold with the BBF opting until now to join. It’s not known if Freedom Farm, which is still headed by Burrows, will follow suit. There are also one or two organisations in Grand Bahama that have not indicated as yet if they intend to join the BBA. Sweeting, who served previously as the secretary general under the presidency of both Burrows and Kemp, said they were advised by the International Baseball Federation that the Bahamas is too small to have a division at the top of the governing body and they should come together

Regulators top Pros, Elites beat Stampers THE New Providence Basketball Association continued its regular season action at the AF Adderley Gymnasium on Monday night with the Elites Basketball Club and the Leno Regulators winning the double header. In the opening game, the Elites Basketball Club knocked off the Triple K Stampers 97-88, while Leno prevailed with a 98-89 decision over the Island Game Pros in overtime in the feature contest. • Here’s a summary of the games: Regulators 98 Pros 89 Carlos Thompson Sr canned a three-pointer in the first 30 seconds of the extra five minutes to go up 82-79 and they never looked back. Thompson Sr picked up where he left in regulation as he sunk a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to even the score at 79-79. In playing 30 minutes and 49 seconds, Thompson Sr finished with 21 points with eight assists, five rebounds and a steal to help lead Leno to victory. Kenneth Pratt, however, was the top scorer for the Regulators with 25 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Hakeem Walkes came off the bench with 14

points and four rebounds and Cruz Simon added 10 points with seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. In a losing effort for Island Game, Derrick Ferguson had 22 points and three assists, Tyrone Sands had 18 points, 14 rebounds, four block shots, three assists and two steals and Colton Albury had 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Pros also saw Steve Miller score 11 points with eight rebounds, six assists and two steals, Lance Rolle also had 11 points with seven rebounds and Duran Burrows came off the bench to add 10 points, three rebounds and three assists. Island Game opened the game, taking a 26-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. Leno, however, stormed back for a 40-37 deficit at the half. The Pros surged further ahead 66-48 at the end of the third only to watch as the Regulators rallied for a 19-10 rout in the fourth to force the extra period. Leno outscored Island Game 60-32 on points in the paint and they held a 20-14 advantage on points from turnovers. They also had a 21-14 difference on second chance points. The Regulators also had a 58-52 advantage in

Prince ‘Zorro’ Stubbs’ laid to rest

Triple K trailed 64-62 at the end of the third as Elites went on a 33-26 tear in the fourth to secure the win. Elites held a 47-45 margin in rebounds and they only had 21 turnovers compared to 26 by Triple K. Elites also had a 21-14 edge in points from turnovers, but Triple K outscored them 64-56 in points in the paint. Elites, however, had a difference of 16-5 on second chance points. The NPBA will return to the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium tonight when the University of the Bahamas Mingoes will play their home game in the feature contest at 8:30pm against the Rockets. In the opener at 7pm, the Rockets will play the Aliv Buckets in a division II encounter.

For my mental state, it’s not good for me to be here,” Rolle pointed out. “I’ve gone through some tough situations mentally and I’ve dealt with it. “But this situation is not for me. There are so many other things on top of it. Anytime I get back home, it helps me to get over the mental stress. But when you come into a foreign country, you have to be careful of how they treat foreigners.” Not to sound like “sour grapes,” Rolle said Turkey is a wonderful place to be and her team-mates are some of the best she’s ever played with. But she noted that what’s happening at the management level is what has been her biggest problem. “The country itself is great, the city I’m in is wonderful. It’s nice and small and the people and the food is really good,” she stressed. “But it’s not the best environment from a management perspective.” Rolle said her agent has a couple of teams elsewhere for her to play on. She’s just waiting on the right opportunity. She added that there may also be something in the works for her to get back into the Women’s National Basketball Association. Drafted as the third round pick as the 36th player overall by the Minnesota Lynx in 2013 after she starred for the North Carolina Tar Heels, Rolle opted to complete her degree in sports administration and exercise sports science and playing a year in Europe. She eventually returned to the WNBA where she made history as the first Bahamian to play with the Seattle Storm in an 80-74 loss to the Tulsa Shock on July 29, 2014. Rolle said she missed playing in the WNBA, which made her play at a higher level. She’s hoping that she will end up back in the league where she can join Grand Bahamian Jonquel Jones, who had an exceptional year with the Connecticut Sun last year.

FROM PAGE 1 to form just one body. “We only formed the Bahamas Baseball Federation back in 2003 because we were never assured that just the leagues will have the authority to vote for who they wanted to lead baseball,” Sweeting said. “That was why the decision was made to form the Bahamas Baseball Federation. Once it was formed, we went on with an aggressive programme to revitalise the sport and we have seen a resurgence of the sport over the past two decades.” With the BBA constitution now revised, Sweeting said the BBF agreed to cease all of its operations and will now allow their members to support the BBA and prepare for the elections whenever its called at the end of the four-year term in either 2019 or 2020. With the formation of the BBF came the National Baseball Championships, which has been held in Grand Bahama to coincide with the inception of the federation in 2003. Sweeting said it’s their hope that the BBA will continue to provide the opportunity for the young baseball players from New Providence, Grand Bahama, Abaco and Eleuthera to come together and compete for the rights to be called the national champions. Last year during the 15th year in hosting the biggest baseball tournament in the

country, the federation honoured Antoan Richardson, the last of six Bahamians to play professionally in the Major League. During its merger last year with some of the splitter groups in baseball, Rodgers and his administration indicated that they will be responsible for hosting a national tournament and sending the national teams off to compete, but they will not engage in a league as was previously the case because the BBF was formed. Sweeting said the BBF will be prepared to assist the BBA in ensuring that the nationals continue this year. As for his involvement in the past, Sweeting said that after working in the trenches for the past 20 years, he has decided to gracefully bow out and let the vision of the BBA unfold. “Whenever the elections are called, I will then make a decision on whether or not I will come back and serve in any capacity,” the former high school and collegiate baseball player turned banker by profession pointed out. Looking back at what the federation has achieved since its formation in 2003, Sweeting said they had a productive operation and were able to watch as a number of young men got the opportunity to attend high school in the United States and got promoted to college and others have excelled to the professional ranks. In December 2016, Sweeting said he got a

chance to watch as nine of their Bahamian players suited up for Great Britain as they participated in the qualifying round of the World Baseball Classic, losing out in the championship game that would have advanced the team to the WBC Tournament. Then two weeks ago, Sweeting said Todd Isaacs Jr and Lucius Fox got to combine their talent in producing the inaugural ‘Don’t Blink’ Home Run Derby on Montagu. “I want to congratulate them for putting on a firstclass event for the public,” said Sweeting of the derby that featured both local pro and international baseball pro players. “That was the vision of the federation when we got started in 2003 to see as many Bahamians excel in the sport. “We are so delighted to see them come back and put on such a memorable one for the fans,” said Sweeting. Sweeting said he is now hoping that the membership of the federation will continue to make its contribution to the sport as they work with the association. “I’m just going to take a break and see how it all unfolds,” Sweeting said. “I think I’ve done my part and I feel it’s the best decision for the sport and so I will just wait and see what happens from here. “As I take a step back from baseball, I thank God for blessing me with the necessary leadership skills, vision, fortitude and, most importantly, patience over the years.”

Kelechi Iheanacho’s deft finish was ruled out by the assistant referee for offside against the Leicester striker in the 77th minute, only for the decision to be overturned and the goal given by the on-field referee about 70 seconds later on the advice of the VAR. That second goal for Iheanacho clinched a 2-0 win for Leicester over

third-tier Fleetwood at King Power Stadium, in one of five third-round replays. The use of VARs is being trialed in England in the two cup competitions — the FA Cup and the League Cup — this season, but not yet in the Premier League. “For this decision, I like (the use of) technology, of course,” Leicester manager Claude Puel said, laughing. “It’s a good thing ... the time was not so long to take the video and take the decision. PARIS (AP) — Radamel Falcao rescued Monaco with an injurytime equaliser in a 2-2 home draw with local rival Nice yesterday, after Mario Balotelli showed his finishing ability with both goals for the visitors. Falcao scored from close range after substitute Stevan Jovetic’s shot was parried following a quickly-taken free kick. It was the Colombia striker’s 16th league goal in just 17 games and it cruelly usurped Balotelli’s otherwise match-winning performance. “We should have won the game,” Nice coach Lucien Favre said. “We played much better in the second half.” The draw leaves defending champion Monaco third and trailing secondplace Marseille — which earlier beat Strasbourg 2-0 — by one point. NBA opens investigation into Rockets-Clippers events LOS ANGELES (AP) — The NBA is planning to speak with players from both the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers to determine the specifics of late-game and postgame events involving the teams. NBA spokesman Tim Frank said yesterday that the league would look into the matter. Tempers boiled over Monday night late in the Clippers’ 113102 victory, to the point where several security guards were needed outside the Houston locker room postgame. Citing anonymous NBA sources, ESPN reported several Rockets players headed toward the Clippers’ locker room afterward, seeking a confrontation, but were escorted away by security before anything got physical. There were late-game incidents as well in Chris Paul’s first game in Los Angeles since he was traded to the Rockets this past summer. Clippers star Blake Griffin appeared to bump Houston coach Mike D’Antoni, and they exchanged words. Griffin and Houston’s Trevor Ariza were later ejected after another incident. Postgame, neither team offered specifics on what happened, if anything, in the Clippers’ locker room. “We were where we were supposed to be,” Griffin said. “We were in our locker room.” Paul was asked postgame about what happened, and dodged the question. “I don’t know,” Paul said. “We took our loss. Tough loss.” It seems almost inevitable that the NBA will have to take some disciplinary action against players.
