By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net ahamas Water Polo continues to set new milestones at the developmental level and recently scored another international tournament win. The Bahamas Mantas water polo club won gold and the overall tournament title in the South Florida Under-12 Winter Cup at the Pompano Beach swimming pool in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Mantas defeated South Florida Water Polo Club 16-10 in Sunday’s final. Matthew Thompson scored eight goals, Alex Miller scored three, Mateo Munnings and TJ Simon scored two goals and Victor Laslop added one. It was the Mantas’ second matchup of the tournament against South Florida

Next up was a pair of wins over YMCA Central Florida by the scores 14-7 and 17-11. The Mantas resumed training following the holiday season just over a week ago and began 2019 on a high note. Prior to the break, several club members attended the Orlando Winter Training Camp led by Ted Minnis, Harvard University’s head coach. It was also an eventful December for the Mantas when they finally received their CARIFTA gold medals from their historic triumph last April in Jamaica. Mantas players also attended a college combine in Pompano Beach in late December.

TEMPLE CHRISTIAN SUNS SENIOR BOYS HOLD OFF SAC GARRETH Edgecombe hit the final two baskets to enable the Temple Christian Suns to hold off the St Augustine’s College Big Red Machine in one of the Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools’ marquee senior boys’ basketball games played so far this year. With Edgecombe’s heroic efforts, the Suns shined past the Big Red Machine 48-46 on Monday at St Augustine’s College. The veteran forward and national team standout signed with Chartes Basket Masculins after he spent last season with Etoile Charleville-Mezieres. ALIV powers Freedom Farm’s 30th anniversary season opener FOR the third year in a row, ALIV is pleased to have not only served as a major sponsor but celebrated along with the Freedom Farm Baseball League on their 30th anniversary season opener. Boys and girls from throughout the community packed the Holy Cross Church before marching to Freedom Farm Park for the official launch and scrimmage games held on Saturday. During a short ceremony at the baseball field, Aliv chief Damian Blackburn reiterated ALIV’s commitment to supporting organisations like Freedom Farm that play an integral role in the development of baseball within the Bahamian community. “Fresh off the heels of the Paradise Home-Run Derby held last week over at Montagu Beach, the derby was more than just a great event for all those who attended to see Bahamians who have excelled to the major leagues perform but it was also a necessary representation of why organisations like Freedom Farm are so important,” he said. “Many of those who participated either passed through Freedom Farm or other leagues here in the Bahamas and have even come back to mentor the younger ones holding clinics and various camps to pass on their knowledge and experience.” “We have believed so much in what Freedom Farm has done for the community, we also made sure we were in place during its launch over in Andros last year and we look forward to all that’s in store for the future. I want to say thank you not only to Freedom Farm president Greg Burrows for keeping this league of hope for many young person’s alive and providing
them such a wonderful opportunity, but also thanks to the parents, coaches, family, other sponsors and friends involved who support Freedom Farm’s vision.” Greg Burrows, president of Freedom Farm, told all those in attendance that he too is more than grateful for all those involved, sponsors, parents, coaches, kids who continue to help Freedom Farm strive. “After 30 years, I’ve never seen an opening like this. She leaned over to me and said that this is a wonderful thing that you guys are doing, and she also said we must look at making this the foundation or the base of national service for our young people. “So, now I am seeking to understand exactly what Sir Lynden had in mind when he spoke to national service. I want all of you to walk with me as we seek to make sure our kids continue to be the best they can be through sports, culture or whatever it is they choose to do.” Freedom Farm for the last 30 years plus has served as a non-profit baseball club consisting of 42 teams, which focus not only on developing excellent baseball skills, but also on building character, teaching unity through teamwork, and encouraging the pursuit of higher education. The league sees players both male and female between the ages of four to 18 from all over the Bahamas and has seen several of its players make it to Major League Baseball. Names like Todd Isaacs Jr, Lucius Fox, Anfernee Seymour, DJ Collie and many more.

All Elite Wrestling aspires to compete with WWE AS I told you in a previous column of the Press Box, pro wrestler Cody Rhodes was following in his late father’s - the American Dream Dusty Rhodes - footsteps. In the ring, and out, from both a performance and business aspect. Rapidly becoming one of the most influential players in the pro wrestling game. The news officially arrived through a pair of statements, and a subsequent press junket, the Jacksonville Jaguars owners Shahid “Shad” Khan and his son Tony made their bold new foray into the pro wrestling business official on Tuesday. The name of the new promotion is ALL ELITE WRESTLING, and it has aspirations to compete with the WWE. According to last Tuesday’s press release, Shad is “the lead investor, a supporter and a backer of All Elite Wrestling,” while Tony had previously been announced as the company president. Some questions still linger, including no TV deal in place – but the Khans did
put some additional cards on the table this week. The most compelling of those was star power. Chris Jericho, PAC (Neville in WWE), Joey Janela and his valet/sometimes tag team partner Penelope Ford, Maxwell Jacob Friedman, and Dr Britt Baker DMD (that’s not a gimmick, she’s a real dentist) joined the previously announced signings to the AEW roster. There were already plenty of big names on that roster too: Cody Rhodes (also a vice president), The Young Bucks (ditto), Brandi Rhodes (also Chief Brand Officer), their “Elite” stablemate Adam Page, and SoCal Uncensored (Christopher Daniels, Frankie Kazarian, and Scorpio Sky). AEW also announced a working agreement with China’s Oriental Wrestling Entertainment, which is run by Nobuhiko Oshima, better known to fans as CIMA from his time in Japan’s Dragon Gate and his short run as Shiima Nobunaga in WCW in the late ‘90s. Cody, who has been very vocal about the sport on

labour issues, also pledged to change the economy of wrestling. But while he stressed better pay, there were still plenty of questions concerning employee status and extending health insurance to wrestlers. Medical costs for injuries sustained in an AEW ring will be covered by the company, though, which is comparatively enlightened by wrestling standards. (WWE generally does this as well, but there have been a few notable exceptions). Cody also pledged that female talent will be paid equally what their male counterparts make. There is still the question of where
fans will be able to watch all this. AEW’s first show, the sequel to Cody and the Bucks’ “All In” pay-perview, will be “Double or Nothing,” on May 25 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas; PAC vs. Page was strongly hinted at as the main event for that one. The second show, with a large but unspecified portion of the gate going to victims of gun violence, will be held in Jacksonville. No date or show name was announced. WWE has been without a major competitor since WCW was folded by Turner Broadcasting, its parent company and domestic TV partner, back in 2001.
The Khans have the money, connections and motivation to mount a real challenge in a way that nobody else has to date, but with no TV deal yet it’s still unclear just how this will all work. There are some promising rumours, there - the company reportedly has numerous suitors, including TNT, the former home of WCW Monday Nitro. A TV deal would make what’s already a big story even bigger and crazier, but it was clear that AEW was aiming high since its trademarks surfaced in back. It’s still a long ways from air, but that Tuesday Night Dynamite trade mark sure sounds custom made for TNT, and a direct challenge to the WWE’s Tuesday Night Smackdown brand. Dynamo M. The WNBA’s Connecticut Sun star forward missed several games since she finished with 19 points in the season opener on a perfect day from the field. UMMC Ekaterinburg remains undefeated on the season. Jones joined the defending Euroleague Champions UMMC Ekaterinburg of the Russian Premier League and FIBA Europe’s Euroleague during the WNBA offseason. Last offseason in China, Jones became one of the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association’s most dominant players and led her Shanxi Xing Rui Flames to a runners-up finish in the final.
The star forward averaged a team-high 29.3 points, 18.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists over 31 games for Shanxi Xing Rui. In the 2016 offseason, Jones was selected No. 5 overall by Woori Bank in the Korean Basketball League and led the team to a championship title. On the season she averaged 15.8 points, 14.3 rebounds and 2.8 blocks - all team leads - in 24 minutes per game for Woori Bank in 38 games. At the league’s award ceremony, Jones earned the Foreign Most Valuable Player Award, Defensive Player of the Year award and was named “Best Five” in the league. Once we can do that, I think we will be in a good position to compete well in the postseason.” Jason Edwards, head coach of the Big Red Machine, said it was a game that they let slip away from them. But he vowed that it won’t hamper their mission to get into the playoffs and contend for the title this year. “The game was a hard-fought game. We just made a few turnovers down the stretch,” Edwards said. “Experience played a pivotal role down the stretch, in terms of taking care of the ball. We just missed too many free throws.” Edgecombe finished with nine points, but Deyton Albury led the Suns’ attack with a game high 23 points. Christian Sturrup contributed 12. SAC’s only other defeat came at the hands of St John’s, who got 16 points from Brian Lockhart. Tyler Moncur and Ricky Moxey both had five and Aaron Sands added four. Incidentally, while St John’s beat both Temple Christian and St Augustine’s College, they suffered their only loss to the Queen’s College Comets.

On bad hip, Andy Murray out in 1st round of Australian Open By HOWARD FENDRICH AP Tennis Writer MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — If this was it for Andy Murray, if this truly was it, he gave himself — and an appreciative, raucous crowd that included his mother and brother — quite a gutsy goodbye, the type of never-give-in performance he’s famous for. What Murray could not quite do yesterday at the Australian Open was finish off a stirring comeback and prolong what might just be the final tournament of his career. Playing on a surgically repaired right hip so painful that pulling on socks is a chore, he summoned the strength and strokes to erase a big deficit and force a fifth set before eventually succumbing to 22nd-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-7 (4), 6-2, Murray’s first openinground loss at a Grand Slam tournament in 11 years. “If today was my last match, look, it was a brilliant way to finish,” Murray said. “I literally gave everything that I had on the court, fought as best as I could, and performed a lot better than what I should have done with the amount I’ve been able to practice and train.” Murray, just 31, is a year removed from his operation, and he said that he will decide in the next week or so whether to have a second one. If he opts to avoid another procedure, he
might be able to play in July at Wimbledon, where he won two of his three major titles, including the first for a British man in 77 years. If he decides for further surgery, then Monday’s match might have been his last. Even with a hitch in his gait, even as he leaned forward to rest his hands on his knees between points, Murray summoned the strength and the strokes to push the match beyond the 4-hour mark. And the fans tried to will him past Bautista Agut, who had lost in straight sets all three previous matches the two men had played. They roared when Murray managed to break back to 2-all on the way to taking the third set, with his mom, Judy, smiling widely as she stood alongside other spectators. They chanted his name when he grabbed the fourth set. They rose when the compelling contest ended. “Andy deserves this atmosphere. Andy deserves (that) all the people came to watch him,” Bautista Agut said. “He’s a tough, tough fighter. A tough opponent. He gives everything until the last point. I want to congratulate him for all he did for tennis.” Afterward, a video was shown in the stadium with tributes to Murray from various players, including rivals Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, along with Nick Kyrgios, Caroline

The most attention, though, was drawn by Murray, who is as popular for his success on the court as his attitude away from it. The stands were dotted with British and Scottish flags and with signs of support. When Bautista Agut entered, he was greeted by a smattering of polite applause. When Murray was introduced, there were full-throated screams, followed by chants of his first name. As play began, Murray delighted his well-wishers every so often with terrific shots on a full sprint and his trademark, quick-reflex returns. When he flubbed a shot or otherwise let a point slide by, Murray displayed the muttering and leg-slapping self-contempt the world has come to know and expect — and, let’s face it, love — from the guy. For all that Murray accomplished over the years, including reaching No. 1 in the rankings and a pair of Olympic singles gold medals, he never was able to leave Melbourne with the trophy, finishing as the runner-up five times. When Murray eventually succumbed to his weariness — not to mention Bautista Agut — the arena speakers blared Queen’s “We are the Champions,” with its fitting line: “And we’ll keep on fighting ‘til the end.” If this was, indeed, the end, Murray did just that. “I’d be OK,” he said, “with that being my last match.”
