SACRAMENTO, California (AP) — Malik Monk made seven 3-pointers and scored 26 points to help the Sacramento Kings to a 124-112 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night. DeMar DeRozan had 32 points and six assists for the Kings (10-30), who won their second straight after a seven-game skid. Russell Westbrook, who played 78 games for the Lakers in

2023, added 22 points and seven assists. It was the Kings' first home win against the Lakers since March 13, 2024. Luka Doncic paced the Lakers with 42 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. The Comets, taking advantage of their size inside the paint down the stretch, pulled off a 44-35 victory yesterday to remain undefeated at 6-0, while the Cougars suffered their first loss in five games. Queen's College rode the 1-2 punch from Devante Crowl and Kayden Deveaux with 24 and 18 respectively. Kevin Hepburn was the other player to score with the other two

points. Belizaise Lubin paced Charles W Saunders with 15 in a losing effort, while both Tre Wilson and Joellado Lubin chipped in with eight apiece. "It was a rough one," said Queen's College's coach Dwayne Smith. "Anytime you play against Charles W Saunders, you can expect for them to play you a tough match. "But our players played hard and they managed to pull it out in the fourth quarter. I told them that in order for them to win the championship, you have to go through some adversity through the season." As they prepare for the rest of the season, Smith said he expects for his Comets to be ready. "We want to go all the way. Once we can get

through the adversities because more adversities are going to come, anything is possible this year." Last season, Queen's College managed to only win three games, but they added a couple of pieces and are now considered to be a contender for the title this year. The Cougars, on the other hand, advanced to the semifinals and although this was a setback for their plans to improve this year, coach Sidney Forbes said they are taking it in stride. OLE Miss women’s basketball, under head coach Yolett “Coach Yo” McPhee-McCuin, has compiled one of its strongest starts in recent seasons in the 2025-26 campaign. The Rebels currently hold a 16-3 overall record with a 3-1 record in Southeastern Conference play, positioning themselves in seventh place in the competitive SEC standings as the team navigates the heart of conference games. On January 8 in Norman, Ole Miss defeated No. 5 Oklahoma 74-69, snapping the Sooners’ 13-game winning streak. The win marked one of the programme’s most significant road victories of the season

and further reinforced Ole Miss’ status as a legitimate SEC contender. Coach Yo has emphasized accountability and toughness throughout the season. “We want to control what we can control,” she said. “Everybody in this programme is committed to preparation. That consistency shows up in games.” Forward Cotie McMahon led the Rebels in that game with 22 points, consistently creating offence against a ranked opponent while also contributing defensively. “That win right there is proof of what we believe about ourselves,” McMahon said after the game. “We play with confidence, effort, and we trust one another every possession.” Ole Miss followed that performance with a

dominant home victory on January 11, routing Mississippi State 93-68 at the SJB Pavilion. The Rebels controlled the game from the opening quarter, pushing the tempo and capitalising on defensive stops. McMahon finished with 21 points, while Sira Thienou added 20 in a balanced offensive showing. “Playing at home with the crowd behind us, we wanted to take command early and keep pressure on,” Thienou said. “We executed our game plan and kept the intensity on both ends of the floor.” Coach Yo highlighted the team’s depth and balance following the win. “We have multiple scoring threats and players who bring it every night,” she said. “That’s how you

BAAA hosts its annual Majority Rule Day road race By JONATHAN BURROWS Tribune Sports Reporter jburrows@ tribunemedia.net THE Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations hosted its annual Majority Rule Day road race on Friday, featuring a 5K, a 3K, and a 3K walk as part of the national holiday observances. The event drew a healthy mix of track clubs including Hurry Murray and Xtreme Athletics, run clubs including Just Run Bahamas and Road Masters, recreational runners, walkers, community members, and a few runners from the Royal Bahamas Police Force. “The race was amazing but I can't say that I really prepared, I kind of just woke up and came for the run, you know, this is the first one of the year so it's just really the warm-up,” said Heathvon Styles who participated as a group in the 5K run along with his co-workers. Styles placed third overall in the 20-29 Men’s Division. “When I first started, I think I kind of started kind of fast, but I felt it in

my legs early so halfway through the run, I kind of had to slow down a little bit, and then I just started to do more of a jogging pace with wider strides, slower breathing, but just tried not to stray too long as I see the people passing me,” said Styles. “The run was great, seeing so many people, different ages, and all the different categories, even different backgrounds as well. It was it was really nice. And I came out here with my co-workers and also some of my friends,” said Genee Burns who placed second in the 30-39 Female Division. “Speaking positive affirmations to myself and my friend was my ‘bunny’, as I call it. My friend is faster than me, so I was using her to help me keep up the pace.” The race started and finished at the Arawak Cay Police Station, with participants travelling west along West Bay Street to the turnaround point at KFC Saunders Beach before returning to the start area. The 5K was contested strictly as a run and featured many of the event’s more competitive athletes,

while the 3K options offered both a run and a walk to ensure broad participation. This structure allowed individuals of varying fitness levels and ages to take part, from seasoned runners to first-time walkers and families. Organisers confirmed that all participants who completed their respective events received a commemorative medal, recognising their effort and involvement in the Majority Rule Day race. In addition, trophies were presented to the top three finishers in each division across the 5K run, 3K run, and 3K walk. Overall results are as follows: • BAAA 5K Run 1. DESPITE not having the opportunity to host the qualifying trials for the Bahamas' participation in the Korn Ferry Golf Tour, the Professional Golfers Federation is still pleased with the progress they made last year. Federation president Glenn Pratt and secretary general Chris Lewis, who have given thumbs up to the first two Korn Ferry Tour tournaments being staged in The Bahamas, said they are enthused about the way forward. In a joint press conference held yesterday, Pratt said they were denied the opportunity this year to host the qualifying trials, which they did for the last three years in conjunction with the staging of their National Golf Championships. For whatever reason, Pratt said the Bahamas Golf Federation was given the opportunity to stage the qualifying trials as they have been mandated as the governing body for golf in the country. But even though they are the governing body for professional golfers, Pratt said the federation will continue to support the Korn Ferry Tour because it's "great for the country, bringing heads in bed and boosting our economy." As a federation, Lewis said they are still seeking answers as to why the decision was made. But they will not be deterred from their plans to push the federation forward. Last year, Pratt said the federation made tremendous strides and he commended Howard W. Thompson, the Director of Labour, for a joint meeting that was held with the Director of Immigration Stephen LaRoda as it pertains to the governance and contributions to professional golf throughout the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. "We have folks at Baker's Bay, who have been recommended as the head pro and so it's been a very productive year for us in the federation," Pratt said. "We've learned a lot and we feel that the accomplishments that we have made will only impact the overall growth and development of the federation as we complete this first term in office." Lewis, one of the pros still looking to secure a job as a top pro at one of the local golf properties, said the exchange that they had with the Department of Labour and Immigration has been very encouraging. "We are a lot further out of

the gate than we were in the past," said Lewis, the last president to serve under the previous association. The federation, which was formally changed from the Bahamas Professional Golf Association in 2024, will hold its elections sometime this year. No date or venue has been confirmed. Pratt said Lewis is probably the most qualified golf executive in the country and while he is still without a job in any of the local golf properties, they will continue to agitate for him to get one of those positions. As they head into the new year, both Pratt and Lewis said they intend to seek another two-year term in office as they still have some more work to go to continue to push the federation forward. With the improvements they have made, Pratt said they are also looking

forward to Bahamians having greater access to the local facilities with prices established in a heads of agreement. "That is why it is so important for the golf leaders to have some consultation with the government when it comes down to negotiating on behalf of golf in The Bahamas," Pratt said. The federation, which took over from the association, which was established in 1968, has more than 100 years of experience in its leadership and that is why they want to be able to meet around the table just like the other sports like basketball and others do. "That's all we're asking for because we know that golf is a big business and that is why it is important for the federation to have a voice around the table

for the best interest of the sport," Pratt said. Lewis said the federation will continue to find opportunities for Bahamians to excel, increase their membership and implement opportunities for the pros to improve at all levels of the sport. "It's important that we are a part of everything that is going on in golf in the country so that we can give Bahamians the opportunity to make their contribution to the sport," Pratt stressed. Lewis said when they are building new golf courses, they should have Bahamian golfers a part of the construction so that they can get interested in learning about the industry and how they can benefit from other areas, including selling merchadise. "We are looking forward to the development of our junior programme," Lewis

said. "We have some other initiatives that we hope to introduce to enable our federation to continue to strive." Pratt said in the past when they came up through the system as the "Young Lions," players like himself, Phil and Greg Maycock were focused on becoming pro golfers and there are others like Chris Lewis, who remained actively involved in the pursuit of their dream. Now, he said, the sport has become a business where the young golfers have to pay to become a part of the programme and that is something they want to change so that they can get more of the grassroot players involved in the sport. "In 2026, we just want to see things move forward as it did in 2025," according to Lewis.

THE Korn Ferry PGA Tour, in partnership with BDG Sports, hosted an inaugural youth golf clinic over the weekend at the Ocean Club Golf Course as part of its community outreach efforts ahead of the second annual 2026 Bahamas Golf Classic set to begin this week. Nearly 100 children between the ages of seven and 17 attended the clinic, representing a wide range of schools from across Nassau. The clinic was designed to introduce young golfers to the fundamentals of the game while providing direct instruction from professional players currently competing on the Korn Ferry Tour. The clinic was led by nine touring professional golfers scheduled to compete in this week’s tour, which carries a $1 million purse. “It's amazing, just the natural head-eye coordination, you know, a lot of these kids haven't played much golf in their lives, but they look like naturals, so that was really cool to see and I know they're a lot more gifted than I was when I was their age,” said Kosher Wood, a professional golfer competing on the tour for the second time. On his strategies heading into the tour, he said: “Just be comfortable. I think hit the shot, you know you can hit. A lot of times you

Emphasis was also placed on pre-shot routines and understanding how to read greens and set up tees. “It's been a great day so far, most of these juniors already have their own clubs, and if not, we have provided them for their use today and they're all really excited to be here,” said

Several of the young golfers also took part in a pro-am tournament held the day prior, giving them first-hand experience playing the Ocean Club course alongside professionals. Also present at the kids' clinic was a set of 10-year-old triplets who all participated in the pro-am game - Zia, Zion, and Eden Poitier - and they spoke about their experience at the clinic. “It was great. I had so much fun playing with the pros, and they were really kind and showed us a bunch of stuff,” said Zia. “I had fun too. I got a few tips, and my swing got better by just looking at

Rookie ‘VJ’ Edgecombe scores 15 to help 76ers beat Raptors 115-102 By IAN HARRISON Associated Press TORONTO (AP) — Tyrese Maxey scored 33 points, Joel Embiid had 27 and the Philadelphia 76ers used an 80-point first half to beat the Toronto Raptors 115-102 on Monday night. Rookie Valdez “VJ” Edgecombe and Paul George each scored 15 points as the 76ers bounced back from Sunday’s overtime loss to Toronto to win for the sixth time in eight games. Embiid (left knee and left groin) and George (left knee) were back in the lineup after sitting out Sunday. Fans chanted “We want Lowry!” in the fourth quarter, then rose for a standing ovation when former Raptors player Kyle Lowry checked in for Maxey with 1:57 left to play. Lowry starred for the Toronto team that won the 2019 NBA championship. He airballed a 3-pointer on his first attempt and missed all three shots he took. Texans stifle Aaron Rodgers and Steelers 30-6 for franchise’s 1st road playoff win By WILL GRAVES AP Sports Writer PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sheldon Rankins is well-versed in the Houston Texans' nondescript playoff history. The veteran defensive tackle is hell-bent on writing a different ending this time. And he's hardly alone. The NFL's best defence is eager to prove it's a unit capable of winning a championship. So far, so dominant and so, so good. Rankins returned a fumble by Aaron Rodgers 33 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to break open a tight game, and the Texans beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 30-6 on Monday night for the first road playoff win in franchise history. “We're here for it all,” Rankins said after Houston (13-5) won its 10th straight game. “I won't sugarcoat it, won't dance around that topic. We're here for the whole thing.” The next step comes Sunday at New England (15-3), where the Texans will try to reach the AFC Championship game for the first time. If Houston can replicate what it did at chilly Acrisure Stadium, it might get there. The Texans limited Pittsburgh (10-8) to 175 total yards, including 81 in the second half. Coach DeMeco Ryans called it the best defensive performance in the franchise's 24-year history. “Every time we go out there, we show (we're the best),” said Houston cornerback Calen Bullock, who picked off what might be the final pass of Rodgers' Hall of Fame career and raced 50 yards for the final score. “We went out there and showed it today. I don't think they even scored a touchdown.”

No, they didn't. The Steelers managed just a pair of first-half field goals by Chris Boswell to lose at home on a Monday night for the first time since 1991. Pittsburgh and coach Mike Tomlin have now dropped seven straight playoff games, with Tomlin tying former Bengals coach Marvin Lewis for the longest postseason losing skid in NFL history. “I don't necessarily compare it to any other moment,” Tomlin said. “It's the here and now, and certainly it's difficult. But that's what we sign up for. That's the life we live.” C.J. Stroud turned it over three times but also threw a first-half touchdown pass to Christian Kirk, who had eight catches for 144 yards. Woody Marks had 112 yards rushing for Houston, which had been 0-6 on the road in the postseason. “It's all about moving forward and trying your best to flush it and keep going,” Stroud said. “Every time we had to bounce back, we made more plays.” Marks' 13-yard touchdown run with 3:43 to go sealed it, and Bullock got his pick-6 less than a minute later. Rodgers passed for just 146 yards in the final game of his 21st season. Whether there's a 22nd is anyone's guess. The four-time MVP will take some time before deciding whether to return next fall. While Rodgers' play down the stretch was one of the reasons the Steelers won the AFC North, he struggled in much the same way as his predecessors, Russell Wilson and Mason Rudolph, did. “I'm not going to make any emotional decisions,” Rodgers said. “I'm disappointed. Obviously, it was such a fun year. A lot of adversity but a lot of fun.” More adversity than fun in the end. Rodgers' final

The Steelers’ defence, long the biggest problem during a playoff victory drought that is nearing a decade, forced Stroud into numerous mistakes and kept Pittsburgh in the game until late. The result, however, was the same as it has been for the Steelers and Tomlin since they fell to New England in the 2016 AFC championship game, with a long walk to the locker room and a longer-thanhoped-for offseason to figure out what went wrong. Houston’s victory was hardly a thing of beauty, as a thrilling opening weekend

of the playoffs ended with a rock fight between clubs trying to shed some ignominious playoff history. The Texans survived the way they have much of the season, by letting the league's best defence smother their opponent. The Steelers failed to capitalise on the miscues from a jittery Stroud, who fumbled twice and threw a pick. Pittsburgh scored just three points off those turnovers. Not even the return of wide receiver DK Metcalf from a two-game suspension for making contact with a fan in Detroit helped. Metcalf finished with two catches for 42 yards and he had a critical drop that cost the Steelers a chance to extend a 3-0 lead in the game.

The Texans gathered themselves after an iffy start. And they took a 7-6 lead when Stroud finished off a 16-play, 92-yard drive by flipping a pass to Kirk for a 4-yard touchdown. Unlike a heart-stopping fourth-quarter rally against Baltimore that earned them their first AFC North title since 2020, this time there was no late-game magic from Rodgers or his teammates. While Tomlin, the NFL’s longest-tenured coach, is all but assured of returning for a 20th season if he wants — even if there were chants for his firing in the final moments — Pittsburgh heads into yet another offseason in search of a quarterback and answers to a playoff drought whose

weight seems to grow by the year. Houston, meanwhile, heads to New England as the hottest team in the NFL with a quarterback who will be eager for a chance at a reprieve and a defence that can keep a game close against any opponent. Injuries Texans: WRs Nico Collins and Justin Watson both went into the concussion protocol in the second half. S Jaylen Reed (forearm), who was activated off injured reserve early Monday, left briefly in the first quarter with a knee injury. Up next Texans: Face the Patriots for the first time this season. Steelers: The NFL draft, which Pittsburgh is hosting in late April.

Manchester United hires former player Michael Carrick as head coach until end of the season By JAMES ROBSON AP Soccer Writer MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester United has turned to former player Michael Carrick to salvage its imploding season. Carrick was hired yesterday as head coach until the end of the season after Ruben Amorim was fired last week. The former England midfielder won five Premier League titles and the Champions League during a trophy-laden playing career at Old Trafford. He was also an assistant coach at United and had an unbeaten threegame spell as interim when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired in 2021. On this occasion, Carrick was selected ahead of Solskjaer, who was also interviewed for the role. “I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club, which we know that this group is more than capable of producing,” he said. By appointing Carrick in a temporary role, United is

giving itself time to find a long-term replacement for Amorim, who became the sixth permanent manager or coach to be discarded by the storied club after more than a decade of decline since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. It is possible Carrick could put himself in contention if he impresses during the 17 remaining games this season. And while he has only been appointed on a short-term basis, it was notable that United did not describe him as interim when announcing his contract. Carrick’s priorities Carrick’s only full-time managerial experience was at second-tier Middlesbrough from 2022-25, where his reign ended after failing to secure promotion to the Premier League. Former England assistant Steve Holland will be part of his coaching team at United. Carrick's first two games are tough ones — at home to second-place Manchester City in the league on Saturday and away to firstplace Arsenal the following weekend. In his previous spell at United, he oversaw

wins against Arsenal and Villarreal as well as a draw at Chelsea. His priority is to secure Champions League qualification after defeat to Brighton in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday put the 20-time English champion on course for another trophyless season. United, which lost its first match in the English League Cup to fourth-tier Grimsby, is seventh in the Premier League, but Carrick said he had “total belief” in the players. “There is still a lot to fight for this season, we are ready to pull everyone together and give the fans the performances that their loyal support deserves,” he said. As well as Carrick and Solskjaer, other former United players Darren Fletcher and Ruud van Nistelrooy were considered for the role. Fletcher has taken charge of United’s two games since Amorim’s departure — a draw at Burnley in the league and the loss to Brighton. He is expected to return to his role as youth coach.
