Anti-Semitism seen in Capitol insurrection raises alarms WASHINGTON Associated Press

S a mob of supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol last week clamouring to overturn the result of November’s presidential election, photographs captured a man in the crowd wearing a shirt emblazoned with “Camp Auschwitz”, a reference to the Nazi concentration camp. Two white nationalists known for racist and anti-Semitic rhetoric live-streamed to their online followers after breaking into the Capitol during the deadly insurrection. And video circulated on social media showed a man harassing an Israeli journalist who was trying to do a live report outside the building. The presence of anti-Semitic symbols and sentiment at the Capitol riot raised alarms among Jewish Americans and experts who track discrimination and see it as part of an ongoing, disturbing trend. As the threat of further chaos lingers over Washington and state capitals ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, they called for more forceful rejection of the conspiracy- and falsehood-driven world views on display among the mob. The insurrection was “not so much a tipping point” for anti-Semitism but rather “the latest explicit example of how (it) is part of what animates the narratives of extremists in this country”, said Oren Segal, vice president of the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism. “People are going to have to ask themselves, were they clear enough in condemning the hatreds that coalesced on Jan 6?” he added.

Anti-Semitic incidents in the US hit a four-decade high in 2019, according to the ADL’s internal tracking. Although some high-profile recent anti-Semitic attacks were not linked to far-right groups — such as the 2019 assault on a New York rabbi’s Hanukkah party — several others were, most prominently the deadly 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Threequarters of extremist-related murders in
the US over the past ten years were committed by right-wing extremists, Segal said, citing ADL data. Eric Ward, executive director of the progressive anti-discrimination group Western States Center, linked the far-right conspiracy theory QAnon, adherents of which were at the forefront of the insurrection, to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the infamous 20thcentury screed that falsely claimed Jews were colluding to take over the world. QAnon’s unfounded assertion of a shadowy cabal “mirrors exactly the antiSemitic track, the false narrative, of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion”, Ward said. “That is the real danger of the anti-Semitism in this moment.” QAnon believers also allege a false conspiracy to
harm children, paralleling another antiSemitic trope, he noted. “It is no stretch to say there were visible signs of anti-Semitism in the makeup” of the riot, Ward said, “but the real power of anti-Semitism in the events on Wednesday is actually buried within the narrative.” The man photographed wearing the Auschwitz shirt was arrested in Virginia yesterday. Robert Keith Packer, 56, was arrested in Newport News, charged with violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds, and knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority. Despite anti-Semitic elements, at least one Jewish participant was drawn to take part in the assault on the Capitol: Federal agents on Tuesday arrested Aaron Mostofsky, the son of a New York judge, who was part of the crowd that broke in. Mostofsky, who was seen sitting in the building clad in furs and a police vest, told the New York Post he believed the baseless claim that the election was stolen from Trump. Ward called Mostofsky’s involvement a sign of the patchwork nature of the farright coalition and noted broadly that “authoritarianism and anti-democratic tendencies are not merely the terrain of white people”. David Harris, CEO of the American Jewish Committee, said not everyone who came to the Trump-promoted rally that preceded the assault on Congress was “stoked” by extremist and hatefueled ideologies. But he urged those people to ask themselves, “‘Who am I enabling, however unintentionally, and how do I channel my own protest without being coopted by the lunatic fringe?’”

God’s secret is revealed THE journey of the magi to the house of the child Jesus is one of eager anticipation. They have taken a wrong turn and ended up in a bad place. Now the star has re-appeared and they know that they are on the right road. We too lose focus, from time to time, finding ourselves off course and following the wrong star. These men have studied the stars long enough to know that this is no ordinary star. They are not disappointed. What they discover is that God has sent a King who is worthy of more than gold, frankincense and myrrh but they offer the traditional gifts, and I believe, they gave him their hearts as well. One of the dictionary definitions is “the manifestation to the Gentiles as represented by the magi” and this is found in Matthew 2:1-12. The shepherds were Jews who came to the manger and they went to spread the good news to their people. The magi or wise men are Gentiles who take the revealed secret to their part of the world. We, who are Gentiles, are invited to follow the magi to Jesus, to worship for ourselves, and to present him with the gifts of our lives (our heart, soul, mind,
strength, talents and everything else that God has given to us). We are to also give the gifts of our time, talent and treasure to the people of God, especially those who would be classified by Jesus as “the least.” They are in the social or economic category of “the least” but in God’s eyes they are loved and worth dying for just as much as those who think they are “the most”. A second dictionary definition of the word epiphany is: “a moment of sudden and great revelation or realization.” Because this is not a mere historical moment that happened long ago, but a present encounter with the living Lord, we are invited by God to make this a time of revelation or realization for ourselves. Select one of the following descriptions and ask God to make it true for you: sudden intuitive perception or insight; a sudden and profound understanding of something; an “aha!” moment; “something clicks;” “the light comes on; ““now I get it;” “I finally see the light.” Your witness is the way you tell this story to someone else. The collect or prayer for Epiphany is: O God, by the leading of a star you
manifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth: lead us, who know you now by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to face.” Is this your prayer? In Isaiah 60 the prophet says: “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. 2 See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you. 3 Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.” (Is. 60:1-3 NIV). What is true for Zion is true for us as well, if we choose to serve the Lord. In Ps. 72:3-5 (NIV), the psalmist speaks about the then king but this may be our prayer for the sea and land to bring us the same blessings and for us to display leadership: “May the mountains bring prosperity to the people, the hills the fruit of righteousness. 4May he defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; may he crush the oppressor…7In his days may the righteous flourish and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.” Are we ready for God to do a new
thing in our Bahamaland? Are we ready to be the faithful people of God? Are we wishing to be a light for other nations? Are we praying fervently for all of us to come out of whatever darkness we are in and come into God’s marvelous light? To do all of this, we have to be willing to allow the Holy Spirit to transform us into a holy people. If we desire to be bold, confident and available to God, then we need to: 1. Go into the presence of God to worship 2. Listen to the Word of God in the person of Jesus Christ 3. Act on this word with joyful obedience 4. Bless others with the Good News of the Saviour and with the gifts of treasure that they need. Irish PM sorry for ‘profound wrong’ of unwed mothers homes Associated Press IRELAND’S prime minster issued a formal state apology yesterday to the thousands of unmarried women and their children who endured pain, shame and stigma at church-run institutions, saying his government was determined to start righting the country’s wrongs. Prime Minister Micheal Martin’s, pictured, apology came a day after the final report of an inquiry said 9,000 children died in 18 mother-and-baby homes — which housed women and girls who became pregnant outside marriage — during the 20th century. The inquiry was part of a process of reckoning in overwhelmingly Roman Catholic Ireland, where church-run institutions were often tied to a history of abuse. Martin said Ireland must acknowledge the scandal as part of its national history and “show our deep remorse.” He apologized on behalf of his government for the “profound and generational wrong” visited upon mothers and their babies who ended up in the institutions. “They should not have been there,” he said in Ireland’s parliament. “The state failed you, mothers and children in these homes.” Martin said it was deeply distressing that authorities at the time knew about the very high mortality rate at the homes but did not appear to have intervened. The report said 15 percent of all children in the homes died from disease and infections like stomach flu, almost double the nationwide infant mortality rate. Martin added: “We must learn the lesson that institutionalisation creates power structures and abuses of power, and must never again be an option for our country in any circumstance.” Church-run homes in Ireland housed orphans, unmarried pregnant women and their babies for most of the 20th century. The mothers were abandoned by their
families and hidden away out of shame, and many of the children were separated from their mothers for adoption. The institutions came under intense scrutiny after historian Catherine Corless in 2014 tracked down the death certificates for nearly 800 children who died at a mother-and-baby home in western Ireland — but could only find a burial record for one child. Investigators later found a mass grave containing remains of babies and young children in an underground sewage structure on the grounds of the home, which was run by an order of Catholic nuns and closed in 1961. The commission of inquiry said about 56,000 unmarried mothers and about 57,000 children had lived in the homes it investigated. Most were admitted in the 1960s and early 1970s.

IT IS the norm to make resolutions as each new year rolls on by. They are usually in the form of fitness goals or life goals in general - but what about those aspirations that are spiritual? Tribune Religion spoke to a number of locals who thought of summing up their 2021 resolutions in the form of bible verses. For Justine Francis, its the Romans 8:31 verse that reads: “ So what are we going to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us?” She explained, that there is no doubt of the trials and tribulations faced by many in 2020, and to be able to make it to 2021 above all, is only by the works of God himself. “I think this is a bible verse all people can become encouraged by, especially after 2020; a year we don’t need again. If you have survived such a difficult year, it is only by the grace of God. I feel like persons that
didn’t have intimate connections with God before, surely do now. He has proven over and over His love for us, His people. So buff up your chest and live with your head held high, knowing you have the biggest and best security guard there is, and that is God above,” said Ms Francis. Anna Cooper said for her it would be as simple as the Psalm 46:10 bible verse: “Be still and know that I am God.” “I found myself in a mentally draining and worrying state of mind this past year. So busy trying to keep it all together for myself and my family that I never really took much time to just be, still. It has been taught to me over and over again as a child growing up. To leave all my fears and cares in God’s hands; or to not worry because the Lord would never put more on me than I can bare. I am living via that bible verse in my life right now because it brings
about a sense of peace to just be still and know,” said Ms Cooper. Gloria Mackey said her bible verse would be Colossians 4:2: “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” “The words speak for itself. I aim to be more prayerful, watchful and thankful in my life. To live a fulfilling life to the best of my ability, I must get better at these things in this new year and moving forward. Prayer and time with God makes me feel good so with this goal in mind, I am looking forward to a prosperous new year indeed,” said Ms Mackey.

HE world-famous Bahama Brass Band is celebrating 96 years of ministry, and under the leadership of David Beneby hosted its third Brass Band Symposium. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the symposium was held virtually and broadcast live via Facebook and YouTube featuring band directors from Jackson State University, Florida A&M University, and Prairie View A&M University. Senior students adept at a musical instrument were also invited to audition as the band has been creating continuous awareness of the opportunities that exist in music. Students pulled out all their musical skills for a chance at a scholarship. Auditions were held at Church of God of Prophecy, East Street Tabernacle. Last year, more than $300,000 in scholarships were awarded to students who auditioned at the Bahama Brass Band’s Symposium. According to the band leadership the group is thrilled to provide talented young people to further their education abroad. Sean Gibson, public relations coordinator, said opportunities abound for young people to excel musically at a professional level. “The opportunities for a student/musician are tremendous, some graduate as music educators making their way to further their studies at the graduate level. There are a number of band students who have already returned home and are teaching in the secondary schools.” Those interested in trying their hands at opportunities for scholarships must also ensure their skills are enhanced as competition can be stiff. “At the tertiary level, the competition is extremely competitive. Students who have earned a band scholarship are often tested yearly to maintain their scholarship and what is also required, they have to maintain a certain level GPA to hold their spot placement in the band. So, it’s a balancing act whereby the ones who are focused do very well in their college experience,” said Mr Gibson. Participants also got first-hand information on a student visa application from the US Embassy and on scholarships and grants from the Ministry of Education. Prospective university students also heard from a recent graduate student/musician on his journey through university. “The symposium was laced with information that becomes knowledge, and we know knowledge when applied becomes powerful,” said Mr Gibson. “This virtual symposium presented an opportunity for parents and the public at large to get an insight on what the marching programs in the schools. Even those prospective college students (who are not musically inclined) would be able to benefit from the presenters from the comfort of their homes.”
