khepran Academy completed a perfect run through the junior boys division as they successfully defended their title in the fifth annual Freedom Baptist Academy Majority Day Rule Basketball Tournament yesterday at the Anatol Rodgers Gymnasium. Saving their best game for last, Akhepran routed Christian Heritage Academy 64-18 to take another title back to Bernard Road, Fox Hill. They were joined by the Temple Christian Suns, who captured two titles, winning the primary girls 23-4 over Freedom Baptist and the mini-boys 12-8 over their girls, while Teleos knocked off Temple Christian 22-4 for the primary boys’ crown and Freedom Baptist held onto the junior girls’ title with a 19-16 decision over Temple Christian. The tournament concluded with Dr Gary Sweeting giving spirited closing remarks to the players on the importance of not just being a winner on their team, but more importantly on the winning team for the Lord, Jesus Christ. Sweeting, an assistant pastor at New Testament Baptist Church and the interim pastor of the Maranatha Baptist Church that he started in 1988, was one of the major sponsors of the tournament. “We have to execute the plan. God has a plan for each and everyone of us in here today,” he told the audience that included parents and family members. “Jesus has put the plan together. Now it’s up to us to execute the plans for our lives. We need to follow God’s plan.” He told them that if they know the Lord, they are on the winning team. For those that don’t, he encouraged them to get to know the Lord before they end up on the losing team. He also advised the players that while some will go away as winners, others will go as losers, but they

DWIGHT Coleby has thrived in his new surroundings as a graduate transfer with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Coleby is averaging 12.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per game and has helped the Hilltoppers to an 11-5 record and an undefeated 3-0 record in Conference USA play. Most recently, he posted 18 points and 14 rebounds in the Hilltoppers’ 112-87 win over the Marshall Thundering Herd. He also collected four blocks in 33 minutes. It was his sixth double

double of the season and his second of the past three games. Coleby has emerged as a leader for the team in terms of his production both on and off the floor. “We’re just having fun out there this season. When guys get too serious I tell them to smile one time and have fun. I just try to keep everybody out there encouraged on the court and it just shows in how we play,” he said. “I think we had confidence from the beginning of the season and then going to the Bahamas, getting big wins and playing big games. I think we know what we are capable of and what we could do in this conference.”

The week prior, Coleby turned in a career high performance with 20 points and seven rebounds in the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers’ 82-66 win over Southern Mississippi. “I think I’m aggressive, looking more to score, to get more involved with the team,” Coleby said to Chad Bishop of ABC-13 WBK. “I think it’s showing in the numbers.” Coleby scored 41 points for Kansas last year. In his last three games against Louisiana Tech, Southern Mississippi and Marshall, respectively, Coleby has scored 54. He averaged 1.7 points and 1.8 rebounds per game in his

first season in a Jayhawks uniform. He was already set to spend the 2015-16 season on the sidelines as a transfer but he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during a light team workout in October 2015 and had to undergo a gruelling rehab process. “I thought he was gonna be a whole lot better than 1.7 points a game for us. And he has been. I think the more he plays the more comfortable he’s getting, the game’s slowing down for him. I tease him all the time, he’s scored more points in two or three games here than he scored his whole

Sweeting was honoured by the tournament, which included the father-son team of Pastor Vincent and coach Josiah Major and official Stanford Davis. • Summaries of the games are as follows: Akhepran Academy 64, Christian Heritage 18: Deniro Bowe exploded for 16 points and both Divinado Parker and Dacoda Johnson had eight points apiece to lead their impressive scoring attack. However, Michael Johnson, one of the youngest members of the team, was awarded the most valuable player award. He contributed just three points, but was an inspiration to his team-mates on the court. “I felt excellent. Some of my bench players stepped up and they performed exceptionally well,” said Sanchez Moss, the head coach of Akhepran. “I told them we had a title to defend and they did just that, so I’m very proud of them.” While Moss said he got a motivational lift from the players off the bench, he didn’t have to exert too much energy from the starters. On the other hand, coach Emerick Taylor didn’t have any answer for Akhepran’s attack. He couldn’t find the words either to describe what went wrong as they switched up their line-up throughout the game and ran a strong full court trap defence. “I am trying to figure out the same thing. I’m trying to figure out where they went wrong,” he said. “They didn’t even come out playing. Everyone wanted to shoot threepointers. Everyone wanted to be Steph Curry and I guess it worked against them. I don’t know what happened. I can’t tell you what happened.” Sweeting, in his address, joked that it had something to do with the t-shirt that Taylor wore with the words “Sorry I’m late, but I really didn’t want to come.” He said his team proved that because they “didn’t put it together. “So blame the t-shirt because I’m sure that they played better than what I saw today.” Christian Heritage was led by Israel Kelly with 15 points.

Teleos 22, Temple Christian 4: MVP Lovence Valcin canned all nine of his points as Teleos jumped out to an 11-3 lead at the half and they never looked back to snatch the primary boys title. Martin Butler added five. In a losing effort, T Stubbs had three. Temple Christian 23, Freedom Baptist 4: Danielle McCoy and Vienna-Maria Facey both scored four of their 10 points in the first half as the Suns sprang to an 11-4 margin at the half and behind their six points each in the second half, went on to claim the primary girls’ crown. McCoy ended up as the MVP. Taneisha Armbrister scored the only four points in the loss. Freedom Baptist 19, Temple Christian 16: Even though it was a close encounter, the host team managed to maintain their 8-6 lead at the half to ensure that their triumph in the junior girls division would enable them to carry at least one title to their school in Palmdale. MVP Aaliyah Henfield scored nine, six of which came in the second, including a three-pointer and 1-of-4 free throw. Brijinique Wilson and Talianle Russell both scored five and Zoey Evans added three. Despite not winning more than one title, Josiah Major thanked God for what transpired in the tournament that got started on Saturday. “I feel that we could have gotten a few more teams to come in from the junior girls’ division. We only had two,” he said. “Since we started the tournament five years ago, we have had a weak showing from the junior girls. That is one thing that we are trying to work on in the tournament. We want to get a lot more junior girls to compete in the tournament because we have a lot of good teams on the island.” Hopefully next year, Major said they would like to invite some of the teams from Grand Bahama to come and participate in the tournament to precipitate their travel to Grand Bahama to compete in the Gladstone ‘Moon’ McPhee/Geneva Rutherford Tournament. He shot 47 per cent from the floor, and finished with 18 blocked shots, fifth on the team. As a sophomore, he averaged 5.4 points and 4.8 rebounds and was also named an SEC Academic Honour Roll selection in two seasons with the Rebels before he transferred to Kansas.

It was just one of two baskets for Bain, who finished with four points, while Rolle got his third rebound to go along with nine points. Bertrum Minns led the attack for the Rockets with a game high 34 points, shooting 8-for-13 from the field and 18-for-24 from the free throw line in 29 minutes and 34 seconds. Calvin Tynes added eight points and 13 rebounds and Tanaj Lightbourne also contributed eight points with five rebounds. In a losing effort, Janaldo Joseph came off the bench in 24:55 minutes and scored 26 points with four steals and three rebounds to lead the Eagles Nest. Troy Trembley was also in double figures with 12 points and eight rebounds. The Eagles Nest led 15-14 at the end of the first quarter, but the Rockets took a 35-30 margin at the half. Rebels 71, Pros 55: Antorio Collie, in 37:07 minutes, had a game high 17 points and six rebounds after he went 8-for-17 from the field and 1-for-1 from the foul line to pace the Rebels to victory. Theo Farrington came off the bench with 14 points and nine rebounds; Craig Buchanana also had 14 points and Adorn Charlow helped out with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Derrick Ferguson scored just 11 points to lead Island Game. Steve Miller had 10 points, seven assists and four rebounds and Dominique Lewis added nine points and seven rebounds. The Pros opened a 14-11 spurt in the first quarter, but couldn’t score in the second quarter as the Rebels outscored them 21-4 to take a 32-14 advantage at the half. By the end of the third, the Pros had regained their composure, outscoring the Rebels 18-13, but it wasn’t enough to make a bent in the fourth. The league took a break for the Majority Rule Day holiday yesterday, but will resume play on Friday with their double header scheduled for the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium. In the opener at 7pm, the Caro Contractors Resistance will take on the Triple K Stampers and the Rhythm Rebels will face the University of the Bahamas Mingoes, fresh off their trip to Florida to play in a three-game series where they compiled a 2-1 win-loss record. On Saturday night, the action will return to the AF Adderley Gymnasium when two more games will be played. In the 7pm opener, the Vitamalt Chargers are slated to take on the JD’s Seafood Shockers and at 8:30pm, the Commonwealth Bank Giants face the PJ Stingers.

exercising, they are not engaged in recreation.” Under the theme “Faster Further, Higher” the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletics Associations (NACAC) will stage the 47th edition of the meet, March 30 to April 2, held in honour of the late Dr Bernard Nottage. The meet is expected to host 26 countries, 500 athletes, 400 volunteers and some 150 local and international officials. Events like the upcoming Flow CARIFTA Track and Field Championships Bahamas 2018 will spark development in other targeted initiatives centered employment at various levels, from administration to

coaching and developing positive characteristics throughout Bahamian society. “We believe they are many employment opportunities, income-generating opportunities through athletics, so we want to encourage all of the associations, especially the BOC that has a crucial role in building capacity in the country and I know under the present leadership they will do an excellent job. It’s important that we produce elite coaches who are able to travel around the world, not just work at home in terms of doing some remarkable things in building capacity, first in the Bahamas, to train the absolute best and then by extension around the world,” Pintard

said. “We also believe that athletics are important in developing certain attributes that grow a wellrounded citizen. The discipline required for our young people at CARIFTA is a discipline required in all areas of their life, not just in preparing for athletic events. We have been promoting in the Bahamas, the importance of competing clean. It is a principle that is also important throughout the country that it is not only important what we do as a nation but how we do it making sure that we put in place the right systems and processes and that there is ethical behaviour. If you are going to encourage ethical behaviour in the government and private sector what better place to look

than athletics so we see elite athletes who are emerging.” The Bahamas last hosted the meet in 2002 and has claimed the title four times - 1980, 1981, 1983 and 1984. Lincicome to defend title at Pure Silk LPGA Classic BRITTANY Lincicome will defend her title against 107 other players when the sixth Pure SilkBahamas LPGA Classic kicks off the LPGA season January 22-28 at the Ocean Club Golf Course at the Atlantis resort. Lincicome was surprised when she learned that her 26-under 266 total in last year’s Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic was one stroke shy of the LPGA scoring record in relation to par. “I birdied the first playoff hole. Do I get credit for that?” she asked with a laugh. No, but she did get credit for the victory, her seventh in her LPGA career. And she did take home $210,000 for her first win in 44 starts. That she needed a playoff was another piece of an amazing narrative last year at the Ocean Club Golf Course, as fellow American Lexi Thompson also completed 72 holes in 266 amid a week of scoring records. A Pure Silk ambassador, Lincicome two-putted from 20 feet for birdie at the par-5 18th hole, the first hole of a sudden death playoff, and then watched as Thompson, third-round co-leader with Stacy Lewis, missed a tying birdie try from 12 feet. Lincicome, 32, of Seminole, Fla., improved to 3-8 in playoffs in her career. “It was awesome. First tournament of the year, you never know how it’s going to turn out,” Lincicome said. “Shooting that many under par, I didn’t think I could do that. I didn’t know I had that many birdies in me. I proved a lot to myself that week, and, obviously, I had a good playoff hole against Lexi.

THE Junior Baseball League of Nassau has announced that they will postpone the start of their 2018 season on Saturday until Saturday, January 20 due to the extenuating circumstances and anticipated weather issues. League commissioner Jeff Albury has announced that all games scheduled for this week will be moved to next week starting on Wednesday, January 17 - the 2018 schedules will remain as published but all dates will be moved forward by one week and amended schedules will be sent out as well as posted on our website.

BRITTANY Lincicome is expected to defend her title against 107 other players when the sixth Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic kicks off the LPGA season at the Ocean Club Golf Course at Atlantis resort January 22-28. “I know my playoff record wasn’t the best, but anything can happen,” Lincicome added. “It was nice to hit some good shots and get the win. And it was super cool to win for Pure Silk. It is special being a part of the Pure Silk family.” Lincicome got off to a hot start last year, opening with a record 64, and the race was on. She followed with an 8-under 65, highlighted by an ace at the par-3 12th hole. The tournament became a sprint to the finish that Lincicome eventually won, marking her third straight top-10 result in the

event. “For me, the key was hitting it close and making some putts here and there,” Lincicome said. “I did not have a lot of expectations going in, because I really don’t like to practice a lot. I figured whatever happened, happened, but I did know I was playing pretty well and I got off to such a great start and I figured I’m in the Bahamas, it’s my sponsor, lets enjoy the week, and the bonus was playing really good golf for four days.” Those feel-good memories could make for another fun week. “It was definitely a great confidence boost,” she said. “I can

pull from a lot of great shots. I will reflect on making all those birdies and knowing that I can do it. His team-mate Johann Pyfrom was the runner-up after he downed the pins for a 644 second high set. Anthony Ingraham of NUA Crusaders crushed the pins for a huge 268 high game followed by a 238 from Sonith Lockhart of Carib Construction. Driskell Rolle of the Asurewin Pocket Pleasers was the ladies’ MVP with a 214 high game and a respectable 576 high three game set. Rolle was followed by Kayla Nixon of CDM Knights with a 504 second high set. The second high game was a 189 from Angie Smith of NUA Crusaders. WENGER MANAGES ARSENAL IN CUP SEMI WHILE SITTING WITH MEDIA By ROB HARRIS Associated Press LONDON (AP) — Cramped into Stamford Bridge media tribune was an unfamiliar occupant leaping to his feet, bellowing disapproval and kicking seats in frustration. It’s not surprising Arsene Wenger was so exacerbated. After all, he was managing Arsenal in a League Cup semifinal. Wenger was forced a dozen rows back from the Arsenal bench at Chelsea on Wednesday while serving the second game of a three-match touchline ban for misconduct toward a referee. Wenger was more animated at times than his team on the pitch as the fatigue of strain of playing five games in around two weeks caught up on both teams as they labored to a 0-0 draw in the first leg. The London rivals only met a week ago, although that draw was a 2-2 Premier League thriller. And they will face off again in two weeks to complete the League Cup semifinal at the Emirates Stadium when Wenger is due to be back in the dugout. While Chelsea’s Antonio Conte was in the customary

managerial position patrolling the touchline on Wednesday, with his players close by to receive direct instructions, Wenger was reduced to occasional exacerbated shouts.
