Velassaru Maldives
FOREWORD
4th November 2025
Every edition of Travelution Magazine is an opportunity to explore a different dimension of the Maldives, not just as a destination but as a living, evolving story. As the travel landscape continues to transform, so too does the way we experience and interpret these islands. Our purpose has always been to go beyond the surface: to spotlight the people, ideas, and perspectives that make Maldivian hospitality unlike anywhere else in the world.
This issue opens with “VoicesAcrosstheIsles:AJourney Through the Dialects of the Maldives,” an exploration of how language and identity connect communities across the archipelago. It’s a reminder that travel isn’t only about what we see; it’s about what we hear, learn, and carry with us long after we return home.
We are honored to feature a special message from Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Tourism and Environment, who shares his perspective on sustainability, innovation, and the path forward for Maldivian tourism.
At the heart of this edition is our Title Partner, Velassaru Maldives, a resort that continues to define understated luxury. In our feature “The Art of Simplicity, Perfected,” General Manager Denys Hordiienko shares his vision for crafting experiences that feel natural, intuitive, and deeply memorable, a philosophy that speaks to the essence of modern Maldivian hospitality.
Our Gold Partners bring their own perspectives to this evolving story. Maldivian, the nation’s flagship carrier, highlights its crucial role in connecting people and places in “Connecting Cultures and People, One Flight at a Time,”with insights from Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas. Cinnamon Velifushi Maldives invites travelers to embrace the rhythm of island life in “GoldenMorningsandOcean Murmurs,” where Area General Manager Sanjeeva Perera shares the resort’s distinctive approach to hospitality.

Across the pages, we explore the industry from new angles. Hospitality in the Age of AI considers the human touch that technology can never replace, while TheIslands ThatRememberYoubyScent looks at how fragrance can anchor memory and define a destination. The Maldivian Palate goes beyond resort dining to discover what locals truly eat. The Stars of the Maldives reimagines the islands as a celestial experience, and Dhon Hiyala and Ali Fulhu revisit a timeless legend that continues to inspire.
Our Featured Personality, Seema Mohamed, embodies the evolving face of hospitality. As the only female airport concierge at Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, her story is one of perseverance, progress, and redefining expectations in luxury service.
Of course, no issue would be complete without our signature “THE BEST” lists, carefully curated to guide travelers toward extraordinary experiences. From “THE BEST” Villas for Privacy and Adults-Only Escapes to Top Resorts for Coffee Lovers and Poolside Bars to Sip in Style, these lists are designed to inspire journeys that are as unique as the travelers themselves.
To complement the inspiration within these pages, we’ve also included a selection of exclusive offers from our partners, a bridge between imagination and experience.
As we look toward the future, one thing remains constant: the Maldives continues to evolve without losing sight of what makes it truly extraordinary. At Travelution, we are passionate about creating and telling the stories that shape how the world sees these islands. For us, it’s more than a responsibility; it’s a privilege. And with every edition, we remain committed to capturing the heartbeat of Maldivian travel: the people, the ideas, and the experiences that remind the world why the Maldives will always matter.
Fraath Mohamed Managing Director

FOREWORD BY MINISTER OF TOURISM AND ENVIRONMENT, MALDIVES
It is a great pleasure to address the readers of Travelution magazine, a publication that shares our passion for excellence and a vision for a sustainable future for the Maldives. This year has been a remarkable year for Maldives tourism. As 2025 draws to a close, we celebrate a year of significant progress and remain optimistic for a future of continued development.
The Maldives has long been a dream destination. While our natural beauty often takes centre stage, the true Maldivian experience begins and ends with our people. Hospitality is ingrained in our culture, and we take great pride in making sure our guests feel welcome, every time. Our tourism industry is thriving. It directly contributes over 22% of our GDP and remains the engine that drives our economy. Since the pandemic, we have seen a remarkable recovery, and an increasing trend in arrivals. This is testament to the resilience of our tourism industry and speaks to the determination and passion of all working in this industry. With over 2 million arrivals in 2024, we are on track to meet our 2025 target of 2.3 million visitors. This growth is supported by public investments in transportation infrastructure, most notably the new passenger terminal at Velana International, which can cater to 7.5 million passengers annually. With the opening of the new terminal on 26th July, on our 60th Independence Day, we are ready to take our industry to the next level.
We are also actively developing our tourism offerings, including promoting the halal tourism segment. The government has designated islands in six atolls for the development of Muslim-friendly resorts, offering concessions designed to attract investment and cater
to the needs of this rapidly growing market. We are also incentivising tourism in atolls that currently have fewer tourist resorts to ensure the benefits of tourism reach everyone.
Our government is committed to sustainability and is working to ensure our economic growth does not come at the expense of our environment. President Dr Muizzu has pledged that we will generate 33% of our electricity from renewable energy by 2028. The tourism industry remains a key partner, with many resorts already making progress in waste reduction, solar energy use, and marine conservation.
These strategic investments and commitments to sustainability are vital for maintaining our leading position in the competitive global tourism market. Our goal is to ensure the benefits of tourism are distributed more evenly, and that we integrate sustainability into national development. We will continue to work to protect our islands and build a stronger, more resilient future for everyone. We see this as a collective responsibility, and one where each of us has a part to play. Our success relies on close collaboration between the government, the private sector, and every citizen and visitor. By working together, we can chart a sustainable future for all.
Thoriq Ibrahim Minister of Tourism and Environment

A JOURNEY THROUGH THE DIALECTS OF THE MALDIVES
Written By: Naufi Amjad

Language, at its heart, is a bridge. It connects people across islands, lifetimes, and generations. In the Maldives, a nation defined by scattered islands and deep currents, it is not just the turquoise waters that separate us but also the subtle and melodic variations in the way we speak. Welcome to the fifth issue of Travelution, where we set sail into the rich and resonant world of Maldivian dialects.
Have you ever wondered how a fisherman from Addu might have conversed with a trader from Malé four hundred years ago? Long before speedboats and satellite calls, what words bridged the gap between atolls separated by great distances? And perhaps more curiously, were they always understood? Could language, our most basic tool of connection, sometimes create boundaries as well as bonds?
In the Maldives, we speak Dhivehi. But to call it one single language is to simplify a far more colorful and layered story. From the northernmost shores of Haa Alif to the southern heart of Fuvahmulah and the far reaches of Addu, Dhivehi blossoms into a multitude of dialects. Each one has been shaped by its island’s history, level of contact with the outside world, and centuries of oral tradition. Some dialects, like the one spoken in Malé, have become standardized through government, education, and media. Others, like those of Addu and Fua Mulaku, remain strikingly different and rich in features preserved from an older linguistic past.
Thousand Flower
Pages from “Moonlight”, an Old Dhivehi Magazine
According to linguist Sonja Fritz, the southern dialects of Dhivehi retain ancient phonological traits that have disappeared from the capital’s tongue. These include retroflex consonants, nasalized vowels, and entire sets of unique vocabulary. In fact, the dialect of Fua Mulaku is often considered the most archaic of all, maintaining structures that linguists trace back to the early stages of the Indo-Aryan language family. [Fritz, 2001, p. VI–VII]
The Thaana script used to write Dhivehi is itself a blend of influences. It reads from right to left and incorporates Arabic numerals into its structure. Yet, many dialects, particularly in the southern atolls, were never formally written, making them purely oral languages passed down from memory and song. Today, as national education and mass media encourage standard speech, there is a growing awareness that these dialects are quietly fading—

Another fascinating detail is the sheer density of variation within regions. In some atolls, every inhabited island may have its own accent or speech pattern. It is not uncommon for locals to accurately guess where someone is from based on a single sentence. This subtle musicality of speech has become a kind of cultural fingerprint, a way of knowing and belonging.
along with the stories, idioms, and worldviews they carry.
This issue of Travelution is an invitation to pause and listen more closely. As you flip through these pages, you may not hear the dialects themselves, but you will discover their echoes in folklore, in names, in poetry, and in the rhythm of everyday life. We hope this journey helps you hear the Maldives in a new way; not just as a paradise of turquoise lagoons but as a mosaic of voices and histories.

ART SIMPLICITY, PERFECTED TH e of
Written By: Mohamed Faizan Ismail
Some resorts ease you into island life slowly. Velassaru does it in an instant. From the first glimpse of its sugarwhite sand and sheer blue lagoon, there’s a sense that the island has been carefully crafted for balance, quiet moments, sensory indulgence, and experiences that unfold naturally with a sense of ease rather than being staged.
Life on the island unfolds with an easy grace. Mornings carry the sound of the tide against the shore, afternoons stretch beneath baby blue skies, and evenings are marked by lantern light and the hush of waves. Velassaru is both relaxed and refined, a place where comfort is expressed with quiet sophistication in space, atmosphere, and the freedom to simply be.

The island’s sense of renewal begins in the spa, where wellness is shaped by water and light, with treatment villas that seem to float between sky and sea. Therapists draw on Elemis, the British brand celebrated for its blend of science and natural activities, offering everything from resultsdriven Biotec facials to longer, restorative body treatments. The Elemis Suite adds another layer, giving guests a private space to spend hours immersed in tailored rituals. Away from the spa, many guests turn to the Pilates studio beside the gym, where sessions keep the focus on steady movement and breath, offering a relaxed counterpoint to the indulgence of island life.

The connection to the ocean continues at the island’s new Marine Lab, where conservation is part of daily life rather than a distant concept. Resident biologists host weekly presentations, introducing guests to the diverse marine life of the Maldives and the ecosystems surrounding Velassaru. These sessions are as engaging as they are informative, a chance to pause with a drink in hand and learn what thrives beneath the lagoon’s surface. Guests are welcome to join a guided snorkel to experience some marine life if they’re feeling adventurous. It is not a spectacle but a close-up view of the delicate systems that surround the island, explained by the people working to protect them.
When it comes to dining, Velassaru presents an array of experiences, from barefoot dining under the stars and beachfront grills to all-day poolside plates that invite lingering afternoons. Each has its own character, and together they shaped a varied culinary landscape, with Etesian standing out as the island’s most refined expression. The menu draws inspiration from the Mediterranean, reinterpreted with seasonal ingredients and plated with restraint. Dishes are bold in flavour while remaining balanced and meticulous. The wine cellar deepens the experience, hosting intimate tastings where the resort’s sommelier shares vintages from both established houses and smaller, emerging producers. It feels unpretentious yet polished, centred more on conversation and discovery than formality, and evenings here seem to drift naturally into the night.

ROMANCE THREADS THROUGH THE ISLAND IN QUIET BUT DELIBERATE WAYS. COUPLES RETURN HERE TO MARK MILESTONES, AND VELASSARU’S RENEWAL OF VOWS HAS
BECOME A SIGNATURE MOMENT.
Ceremonies take place on secluded stretches of beach, framed by flowers and the ebb of the tide. Some choose to add traditional Maldivian drummers, others keep it simple, but in each case the focus is on intimacy rather than spectacle. Private dining follows the same free-spirited tone, whether it is lantern-lit piers or candlelit sandbanks. Each arrangement is crafted to feel natural, drawing guests into the moment with gestures that carry a quiet elegance and genuine warmth.
The villas are composed as serene sanctuaries, each drawing the island setting inward. Beach villas are wrapped in tropical greenery with pathways that lead straight to the sand, while overwater pool villas stretch into the lagoon, their private terraces framing uninterrupted views of the

sea and sky. The interiors follow a clean, understated palette of woods and stone, with layouts that keep the horizon in constant view. Its design speaks in calm lines and natural textures, creating a space that feels effortless and lets the island itself remain the true focal point.
Service at Velassaru is equally measured. Transfers from Malé are quick and seamless, check-in takes place at reception, and guests are then escorted to their villas. Staff strike a balance between warmth and discretion. Many returning guests speak less about standout gestures and more about the consistency of the service. The pace is intuitive and unhurried, the kind that lets guests feel looked after without ever being managed.

VELASSARU’S CHARACTER AND SPIRIT IS DEFINED NOT BY EXTRAVAGANCE BUT BY INTENTION. FROM SPA RITUALS TO WINE PAIRINGS, FROM VOW CEREMONIES TO OCEAN DISCOVERIES, EVERY ELEMENT FEELS CONSIDERED AND COMPLETE.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY IN THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY AND WHAT YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
My journey in hospitality has taken me across many countries, including Turkey, the UK, Middle East, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, and now back to the Maldives again. Along the way, I have had the privilege of experiencing diverse cultures and traditions, each of which has shaped the way I view hospitality and people. What I truly love most about my role is the opportunity to help people grow. Identifying talent, nurturing it, and sharing my knowledge and life experiences with others is incredibly fulfilling. To watch colleagues, develop, thrive, and achieve their goals is one of the greatest rewards of this industry—and it’s what continues to inspire me every day.
A RELAXING SPA EXPERIENCE COMPLETES THE PERFECT ISLAND HOLIDAY. HOW DOES VELASSARU MALDIVES KEEP ITS WELLNESS OFFERINGS UNIQUE AND WORTH COMING BACK FOR?
At Velassaru, we see wellness as a way to restore balance between body, mind, and spirit. That’s why we keep evolving our offerings to give guests experiences that feel both refreshing and lasting.
One of the newest additions is our Barre and Pilates Studio. Guests can join Reformer Pilates classes that build flexibility, core strength, and posture, with mindful breathing built into each session. We also offer barre workouts, which bring together ballet-inspired movement and Pilates to tone and strengthen the body.
At the overwater spa, we’ve introduced ELEMIS Biotec 2.0 facials, which use six advanced technologies for visible results. Our signature Expert Tech Sculpt + Firm Facial is especially popular, leaving the skin fresh, lifted, and radiant.
FOR ME, WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL IS THE MIX OF HIGH-PERFORMANCE FITNESS, ADVANCED SKINCARE, AND THE NATURAL CALM OF THE ISLAND. GUESTS LEAVE FEELING RENEWED, AND THAT’S WHAT KEEPS THEM COMING BACK.

FOOD IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF EVERY HOLIDAY. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE GUEST-FAVOURITE DISHES AT VELASSARU MALDIVES, AND HOW DOES YOUR CULINARY TEAM CONTINUE TO ELEVATE THE DINING EXPERIENCE?
When it comes to dining experiences, we try to capture the soul of the island. Food is a significant part of the experience. So, our chefs take pride in creating dishes that reflect both authenticity and innovation, transforming every meal into a memorable moment.
We have five restaurants and two bars, each with its own personality. Etesian is a favourite for Mediterranean dining, perfect for a romantic evening or a special celebration. Sora offers Japanese and Nikkei cuisines, from sashimi and tempura to octopus nigiri and scallops in soy butter. Sand is all about barefoot dining by the water’s edge, while Turquoise focuses on seasonal plates and local seafood. Vela is more relaxed, with global flavours for breakfast or dinner. Fen Bar and Chill Bar are where guests love to unwind with cocktails and music.
And for something more personal, we also offer Private Dining and the Velassaru Indulgence experience, which is fully tailored to each guest.
AS
A TOP HONEYMOON DESTINATION, MALDIVES IS FILLED WITH ROMANCE. CAN YOU SHARE SOME OF THE SPECIAL MOMENTS THAT YOUR TEAM HAS CURATED?
Velassaru is a very romantic place by nature, with its beaches, lagoons, and sunsets. But what makes it special is how we help couples create their own memories here.
We’ve seen some beautiful proposals, from candlelit dinners by the sea to picnics on a private sandbank or even a sunset cruise on a traditional Dhoni. For weddings, our team takes care of everything, from the flowers to the dining, so couples can simply enjoy the moment. And when guests come back to renew their vows, we design the ceremony to reflect their personal story.
It’s these intimate details that make each celebration unique. Every couple experience Velassaru in their own way, and that’s something we’re very proud of.
CAN YOU SHARE SOME OF VELASSARU MALDIVES’ SUSTAINABILITY AND MARINE CONSERVATION EFFORTS, AND THE IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES GUESTS CAN ENJOY DURING THEIR STAY?
Our marine environment is the soul of the island, so protecting it has always been important to us. Our Coral Conservation Project, led by our resident marine biologist Tisha Smiljanic, is focused on preserving and rebuilding the reef.
One of the highlights is the Coral Dome, a sixmetre-wide artificial reef located ten metres below the surface. It has become home to corals, tropical fish, turtles, and even reef sharks. Guests who want to get involved can join restoration sessions with Tisha, where they help transplant coral fragments and adopt their own coral frame. We send photo updates every two years, so they can watch their coral grow even after they’ve left.
At our Coral Aquarium in the Immersion Dive Centre, guests can also see resilient species up close and learn about the research being done here. It’s an experience that inspires people and helps them understand why protecting these ecosystems matters
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO ENJOY THE ISLAND ON YOUR DAY OFF?
On my days off, I love spending time in our gardens. I like to say I have “green hands,” as everything I touch seems to grow! Together with our Chief Gardener, I’ve taken on the challenge of planting pineapple, avocado, pomegranate, and even dates here on the island. Watching them take root and flourish is incredibly rewarding. For me, it’s not just about the harvest—it’s about creating a living connection with the island’s natural beauty. Every new leaf and fruit reminds me how special this environment is, and I hope our guests feel that same sense of wonder when they walk through Velassaru’s lush greenery.

HOSPITALITY AGE AI in the of WHAT CAN’T BE REPLACED?
Written By: Suresh Dissanayake
In the Maldives, the sea doesn’t ask for permission to be beautiful. It simply is. A thousand shades of blue, white sand that slips between your toes like silk, and sunsets that seem to conspire with the horizon to make you forget where you are. Guests step off a seaplane and, in a matter of minutes, enter a world carefully designed to feel effortless.
BUT HERE’S THE PARADOX: EFFORTLESS TAKES WORK.
The age of artificial intelligence is not arriving quietly in hospitality; it’s coming in with the promise of transformation. AI can book your stay, remember your preferences, anticipate your dietary restrictions, and even generate a personalized yoga schedule before you unpack your swimsuit. The algorithms are clever, yes. Efficient, absolutely.
But the real question is this: what is irreplaceable? Because no matter how sophisticated the technology becomes, guests don’t fly halfway across the planet to be optimised.

THE HIDDEN PRICE OF CONVENIENCE
Earlier this year, I stayed at a resort that was showing off its brand-new AI concierge app. It could do just about everything, book a spa session, suggest a bottle of wine, even tell you the best place to snorkel depending on the weather and coral conditions. It’s something great or marvel. Guests played around with it on day one, but by day three, hardly anyone bothered with it.
Rather, everyone seemed to drift toward Saeed, a quiet Maldivian butler with a calm smile. He didn’t need an app to know what mattered. He noticed a honeymoon couple liked taking their time over breakfast, so he made sure housekeeping came later. He remembered the name of a guest’s little daughter back home and asked about her. No software reminded him. No system nudged him. He just cared enough to pay attention.
Technology can smooth the edges of service, but if we’re not careful, it can also drain the soul out of it.
At the end of the day, what people carry home isn’t how fast the app booked their massage, it’s the feeling that someone like Saeed genuinely looked after them.
HOSPITALITY IS NOT A TRANSACTION
We live in an era when most industries are being automated for efficiency. Banking, retail, and even medicine are all finding ways to replace friction with speed. But hospitality has always been different. It’s not merely about shelter or sustenance. It’s about care, belonging, and memory making.
Think about it: when you return from a trip, do you rave about how the chatbot confirmed your dinner reservation? Or do you remember the server who bent down to tell your daughter a Maldivian folk tale while serving her dessert?
AI can manage logistics. But it cannot create meaning.
THE CURRENCY OF HUMAN ATTENTION
The core truth: attention is the scarcest resource we have. Not the Wi-Fi bandwidth, not the supply chain of imported champagne, not even the limited number of water villas. What people crave most in a resort is undivided human attention.
A story from Adaaran Select Meedhuparu illustrates this perfectly. A frequent guest once remarked that the highlight of his annual visits wasn’t the diving or the luxury, it was that the same waiter, year after year, remembered his preference for strong Maldivian coffee and had it waiting at breakfast on the first morning. A small detail, almost invisible. But it carried more emotional weight than any AI could generate.
Machines can remember your coffee order. But only a human can make you feel seen when they bring it to you.
WHERE AI DOES HELP
This isn’t a call to reject AI, far from it. Technology, when used thoughtfully, clears the clutter so humans can do what they do best.
AI can predict maintenance issues before the air conditioner breaks. It can optimize supply chains so resorts waste less food. It can translate languages in real-time, making a Maldivian staff member feel comfortable speaking to a Russian or Chinese guest in their native tongue.
All of that creates space. Space for humans to be more present, more attentive, more hospitable.
Think of AI as the stagehand, not the star of the show. It sets the lights, manages the cues, and ensures the scene flows.
But the performance, the thing guests applaud, is still human
THE RISK OF HOMOGENIZATION
Another danger of AI is sameness. If algorithms dictate experiences, then every resort could feel eerily similar. Personalised, yes, but in the same way Spotify recommends songs you have already half-heard.

Hospitality thrives on surprise, on moments that weren’t in the brochure. A fisherman invites a guest to join his dawn catch. A chef improvising a curry from a grandmother’s recipe. A housekeeper folding a towel into a manta ray because she overheard your child squeal with delight after spotting one.
These moments can’t be scripted. They are living. And they are fragile.
THE INTANGIBLE ROI
Resort owners and marketers often look at return on investment (ROI) through a financial lens. AI promises efficiency, lower costs, and better upsells. But the true ROI of hospitality is harder to measure: it’s the story the guest tells when they go home.
Do they talk about the speed of the check-in system? Or do they describe how a Maldivian host walked with them barefoot along the sand, pointing out constellations invisible back in their city life?
The danger is confusing “service” with “hospitality.” Service is what AI can mimic.
Hospitality is what humans
create.
Cinnamon Velifushi Maldives

THE FUTURE IS HYBRID
The real opportunity lies in partnership. AI as the silent backstage crew, humans as the heart on stage. Resorts that thrive will be those that understand this balance.
Imagine an arrival experience: AI ensures your luggage is whisked directly to your villa, your dietary notes are flagged, and your itinerary is pre-loaded. But when you step onto the jetty, it’s a smiling host, hand over heart, who welcomes you in Dhivehi, the Maldivian language, and offers you coconut water.
One without the other feels incomplete. Together, it’s magic.
A LAST THOUGHT TO LEAVE WITH YOU
Hospitality has always been about something deeper than travel. It’s about the ancient human need to be welcomed, sheltered, and cared for. AI can amplify that, but it cannot replace it.
In the Maldives, where the ocean is endless and time feels suspended, this truth is obvious. Guests don’t come just for the turquoise lagoons. They come to feel alive in a way that only human connection can spark.

The challenge for all of us in hospitality: use AI to strip away the noise, but never let it strip away the soul. Because long after the algorithms have optimized every touchpoint, it will be the laughter, the kindness, and the human stories that people remember.
Hospitality in the age of AI is not about asking, What can machines do?
It’s about asking, What should never be replaced?
And the answer, timeless as the Maldivian tide, is the human touch.

Flight Stewardess
In a destination where miles of deep blues separate over a thousand idyllic islands, from the earliest of days, islanders set sail on a traditional wooden ‘dhoani’. For many days and nights, the people travel the seas from island to island, and travel for weeks and months to get to neighbouring countries. As times changed and the borders got closer and closer, the island archipelago evolved too. Once a long quest through the azure seas soon became a scenic flight above the islands dotted across the Indian Ocean.
Maldivian’s mission goes deeper than connecting destinations. It connects people, cultures, and dreams. From the tiny islands of Maldives to the Great Wall of China, the airline offers direct flights to Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. Far from the white sandy beaches, travellers can explore China’s rich history, authentic culture, iconic landmarks and soulful cuisines with Maldivian.
MALDIVIAN’S MISSION
GOES DEEPER THAN CONNECTING DESTINATIONS. IT CONNECTS PEOPLE, CULTURES, AND DREAMS.
With a fleet of just two aircraft and a greater vision, Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, began its humble journey in the aviation industry in 2000. Carrying more than passengers — the airline carries the spirit of the Maldives. It stands as a symbol of national pride and development, bridging the chain of emerald islands and beyond.
Maldivian — the friendliest airline with unparalleled excellence, offers a seamless, comfortable and safe flight along with a touch of the famed local hospitality.

Every corner of Beijing — the capital city of China, tells the stories of century old dynasties, philosophy, art, and vivid culture. From century-old temples and art filled walls, to the lanterns that light up the night and the aromatic delicacies served at the restaurants along with intriguing stories, Beijing offers a warm embrace for travellers looking to explore. Much like the Maldivian laid-back lifestyle, Chengdu is perfect for those seeking an escape from the city rush. Here, travellers can visit the pandas, explore teahouses, and enjoy the slow movement of the days. As the day ends, the vibrant night begins at Chengdu.
Travellers can explore the misty peaks of Mount Qingcheng, the theatrical performances at Shu Feng Ya

Yun Opera House, or enjoy a pot of freshly brewed tea at one of the many teahouses or a Sichuan hot pot at a cozy restaurant. Shanghai, China’s dazzling metropolis, features skyscrapers that reach the clouds. Renowned as a modern finance and fashion city, Shanghai offers luxury with Michelin-star dining and boutique shopping. But beneath that, authentic dumpling stalls, historical buildings, and state-of-the-art museums call out for those who look deeper.
From the ancient temples in Beijing, the futuristic skyline of Lujiazui at Shanghai, to the vibrant culture of Chengdu, travellers can easily book the next adventure with Maldivian airline. For years, China has been a significant partner in the travel and tourism industry with close to 15% of the tourists arriving to the Maldives being from China. Now, the direct routes have brought the Maldives and China even closer, making it easier than ever for Chinese travellers to explore the Maldives as well as for Maldivians to discover the beauty of China.
In addition to the direct flights to China, Maldivian also operates to two cities in India: Trivandrum and Cochin. As cities frequently travelled to by Maldivians for healthcare, education, and leisure the direct routes have greatly enhanced access over the years. These routes have also improved connectivity by serving as a transit hub for international travellers seeking an island escape to the Maldives. Within the Maldives, the airline operates

to a total of seventeen destinations across the twenty-six atolls including Gan International Airport in Addu City and Maafaru International Airport in Noonu Atoll.
Today, with a fleet of 26 aircraft, Maldivian operates to five destinations internationally and seventeen destinations in the Maldives. Its fleet consists of one A320, one A330200, eight Dash 8 aircraft, eleven DHC-6 Twin Otters, and five ATRs. As the airline continues to evolve, one thing remains the same — its vision, the warm hospitality, and the spirit of the Maldives.
MALDIVIAN OFFERS MORE THAN JUST WINGS, IT OFFERS TRAVELLERS A CONVENIENT, EFFORTLESS AND AFFORDABLE JOURNEY TO CONTINUE EXPLORING. IT BRINGS PEOPLE, COMMUNITIES, AND DESTINATIONS CLOSER WITH ONE FLIGHT AT A TIME.

IBRAHIM
IYAS
Managing Director - Maldivian
YOU HAVE BEEN WITH THE COMPANY AND THE INDUSTRY FOR QUITE A LONG TIME. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE JOURNEY THAT HAS LED UP TO YOUR ROLE AS MANAGING DIRECTOR?
My journey in aviation began nearly two decades ago, shaped by continuous learning, a deep respect for the industry, and a genuine passion for the work. After completing my Master of Engineering in Aeronautical Engineering at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (University of London), I returned home and began my career as an Airworthiness Engineer at the Civil Aviation Department, then under the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation. This role provided a solid foundation in regulatory and Safety Management Systems - principles that have remained central throughout my career.
Joining Island Aviation Services marked a defining chapter. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working across various facets of the business, including safety and quality management, engineering, and operations. Each role brought its own challenges and opportunities for growth.
I particularly valued my time as Head of Engineering and later as Director of Quality, where I focused on developing systems that not only met regulatory standards but also supported long-term operational excellence.
A pivotal moment came with my appointment as Chief Operations Officer and Accountable Manager of the Airline & Airports. This role encompassed oversight of all operational areas, offering a holistic view of the airline and underscoring the importance of leading in a complex, high-impact environment. I also had the opportunity to lead major initiatives, from aircraft induction and launching new routes to establishing new business lines which enriched my understanding of the industry from both technical and strategic perspectives.
TO ME, SUCCESS IS NOT DEFINED SOLELY BY FINANCIAL RESULTS OR OPERATIONAL MILESTONES. IT IS EQUALLY ABOUT THE PRIDE, PURPOSE AND WELLBEING OF THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE IT POSSIBLE.
The last few years have brought significant financial challenges. The company recorded substantial losses for four consecutive years. Through a collective effort across all departments, we have been able to turn that trajectory around, implementing efficiency measures, optimising our network, and strengthening revenue streams. Today, we are on the verge of breakeven — a result of disciplined decision-making and the dedication of our people.
Being appointed Managing Director is both an honour and a responsibility I carry with great pride. I believe in cultivating a culture where people are empowered to do their best work, where safety and service quality go hand in hand, and where continuous improvement is a shared goal. I am proud of the 25-year legacy the company has built and excited about the future we are shaping by strengthening connectivity across the Maldives and contributing meaningfully to national development.
THE LAUNCH OF DIRECT FLIGHTS TO MAJOR CHINESE CITIES IN JANUARY 2025 HAS BEEN A DEFINING STEP IN MALDIVIAN’S INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION. WHAT ARE SOME EARLY INSIGHTS OR UNEXPECTED OUTCOMES YOU HAVE SEEN FROM THIS?
The launch of direct services to Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Shenzhen in January 2025 has been more than a network expansion. It is a clear demonstration of the national carrier’s commitment to operate with greater reach, higher standards and a stronger service proposition. This milestone builds on the induction of our first A330-200 in January 2025, which gave us the range, capacity and comfort to confidently connect the Maldives and China with direct flights.
The early results have been very encouraging. Since the launch, we have operated weekly flights to these cities, carrying more than 15,000 passengers and transporting over 800 tonnes of cargo. Demand from China remains strong, particularly from travellers seeking a premium nonstop experience. Our presence at major travel fairs, close collaboration with partners in the Chinese market and tailored marketing campaigns have helped us stand out in a competitive space. Load factors are tracking in line with, and in some cases exceeding, our performance targets.
The benefits at home have been immediate and widereaching. Resorts, guesthouses and across the islands are reporting increased bookings linked to these routes. Within the airline, the expansion has created new opportunities

for Maldivians ranging from pilots, engineers, cabin crews, operations staff and other roles needed to support the increased schedule. The growth in cargo uplift has also opened opportunities for local importers and exporters to reach new markets in China.
We are using this momentum to deepen engagement with Chinese carriers and stakeholders, aiming to evolve from point-to-point services into more integrated network partnerships. This will not only strengthen inbound tourism but also open up opportunities for Maldivians to visit China as a destination for tourism, education and business.
Our long-term focus is to grow these routes in a way that continues to boost local guesthouses and smaller tourism operators, giving them a more prominent place in the Chinese market. The direct connections we have established are just the beginning. As we build on this foundation, our aim is to create two-way opportunities — welcoming more visitors to our islands while enabling more Maldivians to explore, learn and trade beyond our shores.
MALDIVIAN IS OFTEN THE FIRST AND LAST TOUCHPOINT FOR TOURISTS VISITING THE MALDIVES. HOW DOES THE COMPANY APPROACH THIS RESPONSIBILITY OF SHAPING THAT SENSE OF WELCOME AND FAREWELL?
It is a responsibility we take seriously, and it lies at the heart of our identity as the national airline. Maldivian hospitality begins the moment a guest starts their journey with us, and we aim to make that experience warm, and memorable, carrying it through to the final farewell.
We embed this ethos across every touchpoint. Cabin crew are trained not only in service and safety, but also in cultural awareness and basic language skills, enabling them to greet guests in a way that feels both familiar and respectful. Our onboard service, announcements and visual identity reflect the character of the islands,
while menus, music and content are thoughtfully curated to introduce the Maldives authentically. On the ground, our dedicated Transfer Team plays a key role in ensuring smooth onward travel to resorts and islands, managing coordinated schedules, providing clear wayfinding and offering proactive assistance. For those connecting through Malé, our lounges provide a comfortable space to relax, refresh and enjoy Maldivian hospitality before the next leg of their journey.
We also ensure that no passenger is left stranded. Even if an international flight arrives late, we work within our network to find a solution and get them to their final destination as quickly and comfortably as possible. Reliability and safety are integral to our service, and we continuously work to improve our on time performance.
The farewell is just as important as the welcome. At departure, our teams facilitate a smooth process with clear guidance, efficient handling and personalised attention, particularly for special occasions or individual needs. We want every guest to leave with a sense of gratitude and a lasting memory of their journey, feeling that their time with Maldivian was a natural extension of the islands themselves.

THE AVIATION SECTOR FACES INCREASED PRESSURE TO DECARBONIZE. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE BALANCE BETWEEN NECESSARY GROWTH AND CLIMATE RESPONSIBILITY, PARTICULARLY FOR A SMALL ISLAND NATION LIKE THE MALDIVES?
For a small island nation like ours, growth and climate responsibility must go hand in hand. Aviation is vital for connecting communities and sustaining the economy, yet we remain among the most vulnerable to climate change. Our challenge is to expand in a way that steadily reduces the emissions intensity of our operations while supporting credible long-term solutions.
A key step has been the renewal of our domestic fleet. We have begun transitioning to ATR aircraft, ideally suited to the short inter-island sectors that define our market. These aircraft offer greater capacity with significantly lower fuel burn, quieter operations, modern cabins, improved dispatch reliability, and streamlined maintenance through a common fleet type.
This commitment is guided by our Green Horizons Initiative, which brings together all our environmental efforts under a unified framework. Through Green Horizons, we focus on reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, sourcing sustainable products, promoting responsible waste management, and supporting conservation projects that directly benefit the Maldives. This includes our tree plantation programme in support of the Government’s initiative, where we have planted trees in designated community and coastal areas. We also participate in CORSIA — the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation — with all reporting undertaken by Maldivian, ensuring our compliance with international climate frameworks while shouldering the responsibility ourselves.
Our approach is underpinned by robust governance. We are developing transparent carbon accounting and embedding emissions considerations into fleet, network and product decisions, in line with national climate objectives. By reducing what we can today, investing in scalable solutions for tomorrow, and reporting progress openly, Maldivian aims to drive national development while advancing a credible pathway to lower-emission operations.
WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE TO YOU? NOT JUST FOR THE COMPANY, BUT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE IT RUN: THE ENGINEERS, CABIN CREW, GROUND STAFF, AND PILOTS?
To me, success is not defined solely by financial results or operational milestones. It is equally about the pride, purpose and wellbeing of the people who make it possible. At the organisational level, success means delivering safe, reliable and meaningful air connectivity, strengthening tourism, enabling trade, supporting national development and expanding our presence internationally. But that is only part of the picture.
True success lies in creating an environment where our people, from pilots and engineers to cabin crew and ground teams, feel valued, empowered and proud of what they do. They are the heart of Maldivian. Without their skill, dedication and resilience, we would not be able to operate. Today, 94% of our workforce is powered by local talent, and we remain committed to investing in our people. Last year alone, we delivered over 100 training programmes and trained over 600 staff to strengthen skills across all operational and support areas, ensuring we have the capabilities to meet the highest standards.
Our definition of success also includes the critical role we play in the lives of Maldivians. Through our air ambulance and medical evacuation services, to ensure urgent medical care reaches geographically dispersed communities when it is needed most. Whether it is an engineer ensuring airworthiness, a pilot navigating complex weather, ground staff turning aircraft around efficiently, or a cabin crew member assisting a patient in transit, every role is vital and every effort matters.
This is more than a service. It is a national commitment. For 25 years, we have sustained it without interruption, no matter how uncertain the times have been. We kept the Maldives connected during the 2004 tsunami, through the challenges of COVID-19 and during other difficult periods. That continuity is the result of a shared belief that our role goes beyond aviation. It is about keeping our nation connected, safeguarding lives and supporting our communities, whatever the circumstances.
AS MALDIVIAN GROWS, HOW DO YOU SEE ITS ROLE EVOLVING IN SHAPING THE COUNTRY’S FUTURE, BOTH IN CONNECTIVITY AND NATIONAL IDENTITY?
As the national airline, Maldivian’s role extends far beyond transporting passengers from one point to another. We are an enabler of national development, and our growth must align with the Maldives’ long- term aspirations. Today, that means enhancing domestic connectivity and strengthening our presence in key international markets such as India and China. Tomorrow, it means expanding our reach beyond current borders, connecting the Maldives directly to regions including Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and emerging tourism source markets with untapped potential.
Connectivity is the cornerstone of progress, and it is both the view of the Government and the company that this is a national service. Without connectivity, progress will not come. By linking the atolls and Maldives to the wider world, we support tourism, trade, investment and essential services. Every new route unlocks opportunities for resorts, guesthouses and local enterprises, while every schedule enhancement makes the Maldives more accessible and competitive as a global destination.
Equally important is the role we play in representing our nation. The moment a passenger steps aboard a Maldivian aircraft, their journey becomes part of the Maldivian experience. Through our service, hospitality and professionalism, we carry the spirit of our islands into every market we serve. That is why we treat every flight as more than a journey. It is part of the story our visitors will take home and share.
Looking ahead, I envision Maldivian playing an even more pivotal role in national development. This means targeting new markets with direct flights, forging strategic partnerships to extend our reach, and aligning closely with national marketing efforts to ensure aviation and tourism advance together. Our growth must be purposeful, connecting the Maldives with the right markets at the right time, and building a network that reflects both our ambitions and our identity.
WHEN PEOPLE LOOK BACK ON YOUR TIME AT MALDIVIAN YEARS FROM NOW, WHAT DO YOU HOPE THEY’LL SAY YOU BROUGHT TO THE AIRLINE?
When people look back on my time at Maldivian, I would like them to say that we approached the future with a clear strategy and a structured plan. From the outset, we identified our priorities, set measurable objectives, and committed to achieving them within the tenure. Significant progress has already been made in initiating key projects on that list, from expanding our network and modernising the fleet to strengthening operational reliability and service quality.
I hope it will be recognised that we positioned Maldivian not merely as an airline, but as a catalyst for tourism growth, a connector of communities, and a trusted ambassador for our nation abroad. These achievements were not the result of chance, but of coordinated
effort, disciplined execution and a shared vision across the organisation. I would also like it to be acknowledged that we built with the long term in mind. Together, we pursued growth, invested in our people and systems, and advanced our sustainability commitments.

IF, YEARS FROM NOW, PEOPLE CAN SAY THAT WE LEFT MALDIVIAN STRONGER, MORE COMPETITIVE, AND MORE CONNECTED TO THE WORLD, WHILE REMAINING TRUE TO THE WARMTH AND HOSPITALITY THE MALDIVES IS KNOWN FOR, THEN I BELIEVE WE WILL HAVE ACHIEVED SOMETHING TRULY MEANINGFUL.

THE ISLANDS SCENT REMEMBER by YOU
By: Jeel Ali

Jasmine Flowers (Jasminum)

For Maldivians, memory is not framed in photographs. It lingers in the air and body, passed down through ritual, belonging, and daily repetition. Scent here is inheritance. It lives in the coconut oil massaged into scalps before school, and the pink roses tucked into hair in the evening. It is the mark of mornings with the familiar aroma of a perfectly round roshi being heated on the pans, ready to be devoured with some hot tea and mashuni . It is the smell of fresh tuna and its smoked richness that cling stubbornly to your fingertips. These are not embellishments but the ordinary architecture of life, reminders that to be Maldivian is also to be constantly surrounded by smell.
Science explains what Maldivians have always known. Unlike sight or sound, scent bypasses the thalamus and travels directly to the amygdala and hippocampus, the regions of the brain responsible for emotion and memory. This unique neurological path is what makes smell so emotionally potent. A single whiff of jasmine can evoke memories of childhood Eid mornings, while smoke from a hearth takes you back to an island you have not been to for years. Scientists call this ‘odor-evoked autobiographical memory,’ and studies show it is one of the most powerful ways the body archives experience.
Beyond the atolls, the world has turned scent into a luxury strategy. Hotels and houses bottle experience as deliberately as they curate services or design. The Edition Hotel partnered with Le Labo to create “The Noir 29”, a refreshing fragrance built on black tea and fig, softened by cedarwood and vetiver. At 1 Hotels, the olfactory story is rooted in nature: a custom blend of eucalyptus and cedarwood, lifted by violet and iris, reflecting the group’s sustainable ethos. St. Regis carries history in its signature scent, “Caroline’s Four Hundred”, designed by master perfumer Carlos Huber. Inspired by Mrs. Astor and her legendary Gilded Age gatherings in New York, the scent layers oakwood, cedarwood, quince, apple, and cherry blossom with American Beauty roses and hyacinth.
Shangri-La greets guests with the serene “Essence of Shangri-La”, a fragrance built around black tea, balanced with bergamot, ginger, vanilla, and sandalwood. The RitzCarlton, meanwhile, diffuses Diptyque’s “Philosykos”, known for its fig and woody notes, inspired by a Greek
summer, across most of its locations. And in the Maldives, Cheval Blanc Randheli carries its own signature scent “Island Chic”, a blend of cardamom, rose, and driftwood, created by Dior’s master perfumer Francois Demachy. This is sensory branding: the art of scent as identity.
But here, the islands had long been scented before perfume ever reached them. Every courtyard, every kitchen, every festival carries its own olfactory map. Eid mornings are stitched with the sweetness of bondibaiy steaming in pots, drifting alongside the spicy aroma of boakibaa fresh from the pan. Evenings settle into the crackle of oil, the air thick with the frying of hedhikaa—bajiyaa, gulha, keemia — each bite announced first by its scent. Some scents belong to the seasons themselves: reef tang at low tide, valhomas curing in the sun, and the monsoon air drifting through islands, heavy with salt and rain.
Luxury resorts may layer curated perfumes across their lobbies, but the Maldives itself remains perfumed by ancestry. To step into these islands is to breathe memory that does not belong to a single person, but to a people. Because here, scent is not an accessory. It is spatial, architectural, emotional, and ancestral. It builds identity as much as home or language.
Long after the sun has left your skin, it is the smell of these islands that lingers — not just reminding you where you were, but who you were while you were here.

FEATURED PERSONALITY
SEEMA MOHAMED
Airport Concierge at Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY, AND WHAT LED YOU TO THE ROLE OF AN AIRPORT REPRESENTATIVE?
I have always been drawn to aviation and hospitality. My journey began at 17 with Maldivian Air Taxi as a Customer Service Officer, where I discovered the joy of welcoming guests from around the world. Later, with Malaysian Airlines, I gained valuable experience in reservations and ticketing, but I soon realized I was not meant for a desk job—I thrive on being on my feet, engaging with people, and feeling the energy of the airport. After taking time to focus on my family, I wanted to return to what I love most, which led me to Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, serving as the iconic resort’s airport representative.
AS THE FIRST POINT OF CONTACT FOR MANY GUESTS ARRIVING IN THE MALDIVES, HOW DO YOU PREPARE YOURSELF TO ENSURE THAT FIRST INTERACTION IS TRULY MEMORABLE?
Preparation begins with knowing our guests. I carefully review their profiles so I can anticipate needs and tailor each interaction. Just as important is preparing myself— remaining calm, composed, and fully present. That first warm smile, the ease of handling transfers, and the reassurance I provide set the tone for everything that follows. At Waldorf Astoria Maldives, we welcome families, honeymooners, celebrities, and even heads of state, each seeking privacy and exclusivity. My role is to embody True Waldorf Service from the very first moment, ensuring they feel instantly safe, discreetly cared for, and seamlessly guided into a world of effortless luxury.
IT IS OFTEN THE SMALLEST TOUCHES THAT LEAVE THE DEEPEST IMPRESSION.

YOUR ROLE OFTEN COMES WITH UNPREDICTABLE CHALLENGES. HOW DO YOU MANAGE THOSE WHILE ENSURING THE GUEST’S JOURNEY FEELS SEAMLESS?
The airport is a dynamic environment, and challenges are inevitable. For me, adaptability is essential—I pivot quickly so that our guests never feel a disruption. Whether it is a delayed flight, missing baggage, or last-minute changes, I see these moments as opportunities to quietly step in and ensure the experience remains effortless. Through close coordination with airlines, our transfer team, and the resort, solutions are already in place before the guest is even aware of an issue. My priority is always the same: to protect their time, privacy, and peace of mind, allowing their Waldorf Astoria journey to begin flawlessly.

AFTER LONG-HAUL FLIGHTS, GUESTS MAY ARRIVE TIRED, STRESSED, OR EAGER TO REACH THEIR DESTINATION. WHAT SUBTLE CUES DO YOU LOOK FOR, AND HOW DO YOU ADAPT YOUR APPROACH TO THEIR STATE OF MIND?
IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHICH SMALL GESTURES OR THOUGHTFUL TOUCHES HAVE THE GREATEST IMPACT IN MAKING GUESTS FEEL GENUINELY CARED FOR?
I pay close attention to body language and adapt to each guest’s energy. A weary traveler may appreciate quiet reassurance and efficiency, while an excited guest may enjoy warm conversation where I share insights about the Maldives—its culture, cuisine, and unique traditions to look forward to at the resort. Families often need extra care for children, while other guests might require discretion above all else. At Waldorf Astoria Maldives, every encounter is personalized; it is about meeting each guest exactly where they are, so they feel understood and cared for from the moment they arrive.
It is often the smallest touches that leave the deepest impression. Remembering a returning guest’s name, anticipating needs before they are spoken, or ensuring a sense of privacy for highprofile guests all carry great meaning. These gestures reflect the Waldorf Astoria promise of anticipatory, personalized service. They transform routine interactions into unforgettable moments and assure guests that they are not only welcomed but truly valued.

LOOKING BACK ON YOUR CAREER, WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST MEANINGFUL COMPLIMENT OR EXPRESSION OF GRATITUDE YOU’VE RECEIVED FROM A GUEST?
One guest once told me, “You made me feel at home the moment I stepped off the plane.” That simple expression perfectly captured my purpose. Over the years, I have received personal thanks and repeat visits from distinguished guests who remembered me by name. Yet the compliments I treasure most are those that affirm I succeeded in making someone feel cared for and protected. In the Maldives, where privacy is the ultimate luxury, trust is the highest form of gratitude, and it is an honor to earn it on behalf of Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi.

Written By: Jeel Ali AT CINNAMON VELIFUSHI MALDIVES

A 25-minute seaplane flight over the velvet blues of the Indian Ocean offers your first glimpse of the enchantment that awaits. From the sky, Cinnamon Velifushi appears like a brushstroke of white sand and emerald palms, fringed by iridescent reef and impossibly clear shallows. Whether you arrive by seaplane or glide in by speedboat, each mile draws you closer to something exquisitely unhurried, something that trades performance for peace, and overproduction for honest, breathable luxury. Set in the secluded Vaavu Atoll, far from the usual footprints, Cinnamon Velifushi Maldives does not try to impress with noise. It does not need to. It’s a soft return to rhythm, a place where time doesn’t dictate your day but expands it. From the moment your feet meet warm, powderfine sand, the noise of daily life fades into the hush of waves and rustling palms. There is no script here—just a sense that you have landed exactly where you need to be. Built around a philosophy of elegant restraint and authentic connection, the island embodies the warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality through its people, pace, and thoughtful design. That ethos flows into the island’s design. Clean-lined, low-slung structures nestle between tropical foliage and open skies. Nothing distracts from the setting; the villas are designed

At the farthest edge of the property, the Water Suites with Pool channel peak escapism: oversized decks, glass floor panels revealing the blue beneath, and plunge pools just begging for a midday dip. Interiors lean into pale timber, handwoven textures, and soft, shadowy light. Every space is built not just for comfort, but for clarity. It is a place to rest, to think, or not think at all.

THE DINING EXPERIENCE REFLECTS
THAT SAME SENSE OF BALANCE. AT IRU KITCHEN & BAR, THE RESORT’S ALL-DAY
RESTAURANT, GLOBAL FLAVOURS ARRIVE WITH COLOUR AND ENERGY, FROM LIVE SHOW KITCHENS TO GENEROUS BUFFETS THAT SPAN CONTINENTS.
There is no pretense, just good food prepared with care. Vah Global Dining, perched by the water, brings something a little more elevated to the table, beautifully plated courses served slowly and purposefully under candlelight and a wide-open sky. For those who prefer to graze, Fen Bar offers wood-fired pizza, cocktails laced with island fruit, and long hours spent doing absolutely nothing. You will find yourself drifting easily between espresso at breakfast and something stronger by sundown, with the Vah Lounge offering a quiet place to settle in for both. And if you would rather stay cocooned in your villa, in-room dining comes with the same attention to detail, and none of the rush.
For those in search of something more intimate, The Marlin Restaurant presents an à la carte dining experience that’s both elegant and intentionally understated. With fewer than ten tables, this open-air venue is built for quiet celebration, where the sound of lapping waves and the changing sky form the backdrop to a refined seafood and meat-led menu. Highlights include the Tom Yum Talay, a delicately spiced Thai seafood broth, and the curried lobster, a Maldivian-inflected signature simmered in coconut cream. From oysters served six ways to Wagyu beef and Mulwarra lamb, each course is paired with thoughtfully selected wines from an expanded cellar. The staff’s deep knowledge of pairing elevates the meal into something more than dinner, it becomes a moment that lingers long after the final bite.

EQUALLY COMPELLING IN A DIFFERENT KEY, THE ARRACK BAR OFFERS A SPIRITED ESCAPE THAT BRINGS A TOUCH OF SRI LANKAN SOUL TO MALDIVIAN SHORES.
In collaboration with Iru Bar, this venue crafts a menu of arrack-based cocktails that celebrate the rich character of this traditional spirit. It’s a place where every drink tells a story, of heritage, craftsmanship, and the slow rhythm of island life, ideal for lingering sundowners or reflective nightcaps.
Between meals, there is no pressure to fill your time, but when you want to move, the island responds. The house reef is a diver’s dream, alive with marine life just steps from shore. Beyond it, the resort’s dive centre offers access to some of the Maldives’ most storied wrecks and coral gardens. Dolphins cruise the edge of the atoll at dawn, and the sea invites you out, whether by canoe, catamaran, or simply a quiet swim at sunrise. For those craving something more intimate, sandbank picnics,
uninhabited island visits, and sunset fishing excursions offer a kind of romance you would not find on any itinerary. And for those curious about life beyond the resort, guided village visits reveal the everyday heart of Maldivian island culture: simple, slow, and deeply rooted in community.
What makes Cinnamon Velifushi resonate long after you have left is not just the scale or sparkle, but the sincerity. Owned by Sri Lanka’s largest and most respected hospitality group, the resort carries a legacy of warmth that goes far beyond service. It is in the way staff greet you by name without a checklist. In every request that is met, not just with efficiency, but with care. There is a kind of ease that runs beneath everything here. Nothing is overdone, and yet nothing is overlooked. That’s the magic, unspoken, but unmistakable.
Whether you come alone or with someone you love, whether you are seeking solitude, reconnection, or simply the pause the world rarely allows, Cinnamon Velifushi Maldives offers more than a holiday. It provides space to sink into the moment and to recalibrate. It is the kind of place that leaves a mark not through spectacle, but through sensation. Through silence. Through the way the breeze slips through the palms at night and the light filters through your villa in the morning. You leave a little lighter, a little clearer.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START A CAREER IN THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY.
I’m a proud Sri Lankan, happily married, and a father to three amazing sons. I was raised in the scenic highlands of Sri Lanka, where my father worked as a tea planter. Growing up surrounded by rolling tea estates and a close-knit community gave me a deep appreciation for nature, culture, and connection.
From my earliest days, I loved being around people talking to them, listening to their stories, and helping in any way I could. That natural curiosity and care for others made it clear to me, even as a child, that I wanted to work in a field where I could serve and support people every day. So right after school, I chose hospitality as my path.
I moved to Colombo to study at Nalanda College, then pursued professional training at the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management. Later, I completed my MBA from the University of Wolverhampton, UK, which helped me grow both personally and professionally. Today, with over 30 years in the industry, I still carry that same passion that first inspired me as a young boy in the hills.
DURING
TODAY, WITH OVER 30 YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY, I STILL CARRY THAT SAME PASSION THAT FIRST INSPIRED ME AS A YOUNG BOY IN THE HILLS.
YOUR THREE-DECADE LONG CAREER, HOW HAVE YOU SEEN GUEST EXPECTATIONS CHANGE?
Guest expectations have evolved dramatically. Today’s travelers seek more than comfort—they crave authenticity, personalization, and purpose. They want immersive experiences, sustainable practices, and seamless digital convenience. Wellness, safety, and local flavor are no longer optional, they’re essential. The modern guest is informed, expressive, and values brands that listen, adapt, and deliver with heart.

WHAT CORE VALUES HAVE GUIDED YOUR LEADERSHIP OVER THE YEARS?
My leadership philosophy is rooted in integrity, empathy, and empowerment. I believe in nurturing talent, fostering innovation, and leading by example. Sustainability, community engagement, and cultural respect are pillars of my approach. I strive to create environments where teams feel inspired, valued, and driven to exceed expectations— because great hospitality starts from within.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE LOCAL CULTURE WITH INTERNATIONAL LUXURY AT CINNAMON RESORTS IN THE MALDIVES?
It’s all about celebrating the soul of the Maldives while delivering world-class experiences. We weave local traditions, flavors, and artistry into every touchpoint— from cuisine to excursions. Our teams are trained to be cultural ambassadors, offering guests a genuine taste of island life. By partnering with local communities and embracing eco-conscious practices, we ensure that luxury feels authentic, responsible, and deeply connected to the destination.
YOU’VE BEEN WITH CINNAMON HOTELS & RESORTS FOR MORE THAN HALF YOUR CAREER. CAN YOU SHARE A DEFINING MOMENT THAT SHAPED YOUR APPROACH?
Definitely. One of the most meaningful parts of my journey has been witnessing and contributing to the transformation of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts. When I first joined, our properties operated more independently, each with its own identity. Over time, we evolved into a unified brand—bringing together our hotels under the Cinnamon name and creating a strong, recognizable presence in the region.
Being part of that transformation—from a collection of individual hotels to a cohesive and respected hospitality brand—has been incredibly rewarding. Today, we’re working towards the next exciting chapter of Cinnamon, with fresh ideas and experiences that will elevate our brand even further.
Alongside this journey, I’ve also been deeply involved in sustainability and ESG initiatives, which have taught me the importance of purpose-driven leadership. I’ve learned that true success comes from empowering people, embracing change, and staying committed to values that make a lasting impact.
IN ESSENCE, I’M PROUD TO HAVE GROWN WITH CINNAMON—FROM ITS EARLY DAYS TO WHERE WE ARE NOW—AND TO BE PART OF SHAPING ITS FUTURE.
IF
YOU WERE A GUEST AT A CINNAMON RESORT IN THE MALDIVES FOR ONE DAY, WHAT WOULD YOUR PERFECT ISLAND ESCAPE LOOK LIKE?
My perfect island day would begin with sunrise yoga by the ocean or a refreshing gym session to start the morning right. After that, I’d enjoy a hearty Maldivian breakfast, full of fresh, local flavors.
A snorkeling session at the house reef would be a must—there’s something truly special about exploring the vibrant marine life just steps from the shore.

IN THE AFTERNOON, I’D UNWIND WITH A SPA TREATMENT
OVERLOOKING THE WATER, FOLLOWED BY SOME QUIET
TIME READING A BOOK BY THE SEA, SOAKING IN THE PEACEFUL SURROUNDINGS.
As the sun begins to set, I’d head out on a sunset cruise, taking in the golden skies and calm waters. The perfect end to the day would be a gourmet seafood dinner under the stars, accompanied by relaxing music, a beautiful blend of nature, luxury, and serenity.

Escape and reconnect with nature, yourself and those who matter most in the sweeping blue panoramics of the Indian Ocean. With soft white sands and palm tree peppered terraces, be mesmerised by island life from the moment you board the seaplane to the tranquil shores of the Raa Atoll. Nestled close to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, prepare to be amazed by the myriad of marine life in our lagoon including a unique manta ray sanctuary adjacent to this luxury resort in Maldives.
PALATE MALDIVIAN
A TRAVELER’S GUIDE TO WHAT (BEYOND RESORT MENUS) LOCALS REALLY EAT

Written By: Ruby Amir
Maldivian Lunch Spread

The Maldives carries a brand heritage of being the ultimate tropical getaway, with its petite islands strung across the ocean and a climate that promises warmth throughout the year. It has come to symbolise the very idea of paradise, often used as the standard against which other tropical destinations are measured.
But within the foodie world, especially for travellers who journey for the taste of a destination, the Maldives has plenty to offer. The gourmet menus of the resorts may delight the discerning palate, yet the food that lives beyond those menus is still waiting to be explored, quintessentially Maldivian.
Mark Wiens the ultra famous food vlogger who recently travelled across the Maldives on a quest for tasting local cuisine recently dubbed the Maldives as ‘tuna paradise’; fitting for a nation that relies on, favors on, tuna for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Maldivian palate can be pretty linear when it comes to all things tuna but at the same time it has the ability to delightfully surprise travellers that want to come here for its exquisite flavours and variations.
Why is Maldivian cuisine so centered on tuna? The answer lies in geography. The oceanic environment and the infertile soil of the coral islands shaped a spartan diet dominated by fish, coconut, and starch. From the onset, meals were simple, humble affairs, often consisting of rice and boiled fish accompanied by fish broth, onions, chillies and lime.
Mashuni is the local’s favourite go-to when it comes to traditional dishes; an adaptable dish, blending boiled, canned or smoked tuna with shredded coconut, sliced onions, lime, and chillies. Typically eaten for breakfast,

Maldivian Lunch Spread
Mashuni & Roshi
Maldivian Feast

each house has their take on Mashuni , but a lot of precision is given to how the person slices the onions for the mashuni which ultimately needs to be paper thin. What makes it the most ideal is with roshi , the local flatbread and a hot sweetened black tea rounding up as the unrivalled comfort food for locals.
Slow-simmered curries are central to Maldivian cuisine, equally fragrant but lighter than their Indian counterparts. Curry leaves take centre stage, coconut milk lends creaminess while local spices and chilli provide depth. A typical ‘Sufura Mathi’ or a local’s dinner table might include tuna curry, vegetable curry, dhal, rice, and Rihaakuru – a thick fish paste considered a delicacy, drizzled over rice for added flavour. Maldivian meal tables across the atolls are built on what is readily available and dishes are simply defined yet generous. From the north to the south, locals have variations in the curry paste they use and Addu, the southern most atoll is especially famous for its beloved Addu ‘Havaadhu’.
The true soul of Maldivian snacking, however, is found in the Hotaa , a local tea shop. Here, bite-sized savouries called Hedhikaa are served throughout the day. Favourites include Gulha (deep-fried dough balls stuffed with fish), Bis Keemiya (a fried pastry with egg filling), and Masroshi (tuna-filled flatbread). These snacks are cheap, cheerful, and always accompanied by steaming sweet black tea, often infused with jasmine. For travellers, sampling Hedhikaa is one of the easiest ways to experience everyday Maldivian life. Conversations at these communal tables are as much “food for thought” as the dishes themselves. Every neighbourhood in Malé and on the islands has its own trusted Hotaa , and locals are always eager to recommend their favourites.
As the Maldives continues to evolve as a luxury destination that does not need an introduction, there is growing recognition to preserve the cultural heritage. Chefs, communities and cultural organisations are working to document recipes and revive lesser-known dishes to ensure that traditional flavours do not get overshadowed by global influences.
For those willing to go beyond the resort buffets it is a heartwarming experience and tied to the local way of life. It is more than a gastronomic adventure; it is a way of honouring the cultural heritage and connecting with the islands in a deeper way.

The MALDIVES STARS
of the A DIFFERENT KIND OF PARADISE
Written By: Shizna Ahmed (Shizu)
Soneva Fushi - @petrhoralek

Soneva Fushi

The Maldives is often thought of as a paradise for its turquoise waters and white sandy beaches, but what happens after the sun goes down is often overlooked. On a clear night, the sky becomes a vast canvas studded with stars and planets. For me, this has always been one of the most beautiful parts of living here.
MY LOVE FOR THE NIGHT SKY SPARKED WHEN I WAS YOUNG. GROWING UP, MY MUM OFTEN TOOK ME ON TRIPS TO UNINHABITED ISLANDS WITH HER FRIENDS.
With no high-rise buildings or city lights, the skies were free from light pollution and revealed their true brilliance. I remember lying back on the sand, staring up at the Milky Way, and feeling an overwhelming sense of wonder about what might be out there.
One memory that still makes me smile is a camping trip with friends. We spent hours lying under the Milky Way, watching meteors streak across the sky. It was one of those rare experiences that makes you feel both small and infinite at the same time, a feeling that has stayed with me ever since.
Years later, working as an astronomer at Soneva allowed me to turn that childhood curiosity into something deeper. I had the opportunity to look through a telescope
for the first time, and that moment changed everything. Suddenly, the planets and distant worlds weren’t just dots in the sky; they were real and detailed. Saturn’s rings, the craters of the Moon, and the faint glow of galaxies became part of my everyday life. I’ve spent countless nights under the stars, learning from previous astronomers and visiting scientists, guiding guests, and still finding my own sense of awe each time. Sharing that view with others has been one of the greatest joys of being an astronomer.
What makes the Maldives so special for stargazing is its remoteness. Our skies are incredibly dark thanks to minimal light pollution, and being surrounded by the vast Indian Ocean keeps them especially clear. But the real magic is in our location. Sitting close to the equator, we’re able to see both the northern and southern hemispheres of the sky. This means the view changes dramatically throughout the year. Every six months, new constellations rise, planets shift, and the sky offers an entirely new canvas. Even within a single night, if you watch after sunset and again before dawn, you’ll see a completely different set of stars.
Stargazing here is unforgettable. With the naked eye, you can spot bright planets, shimmering star clusters, and even the Andromeda Galaxy, our nearest galactic neighbour. Through binoculars or a telescope, the view becomes even more spectacular. Saturn almost always steals the show. Guests are often speechless when they see its rings for the first time. Many laugh in disbelief or ask if the image has been placed inside the telescope. The Moon, too, is striking, with its craters and shadows standing out in sharp detail. My personal favourites are the deep sky objects: nebulae, galaxies, and clusters whose light has travelled thousands of years to reach us. Looking at them feels like gazing back through time.
Celestial Observatory at Soneva Fushi - @Haneensiddiq

MY PERSONAL FAVOURITES ARE THE DEEP SKY OBJECTS: NEBULAE, GALAXIES, AND CLUSTERS WHOSE LIGHT HAS TRAVELLED THOUSANDS OF YEARS TO REACH US. LOOKING AT THEM FEELS LIKE GAZING BACK THROUGH TIME.
Some nights bring especially rare and humbling moments. In October last year, I saw a comet for the first time. Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS). Its hyperbolic orbit meant it would never return to the inner solar system. Knowing I was seeing something that had travelled millions of years across space, and that this was our only chance to witness it, was deeply moving.
Although the skies in the Maldives are beautiful year round, my favourite time to stargaze is between late August and February. During these months, the centre of our galaxy comes into view, along with countless distant objects, and Saturn often graces the night sky. Of course, everything depends on the weather, but this season always feels like it carries a special weight.
Looking ahead, I believe stargazing here will only grow in importance as more people discover the wonders of the night sky. But alongside this fascination comes a responsibility to protect it. Just as we preserve coral reefs and marine ecosystems, we should also safeguard the stars above by reducing light pollution. For example, by using warm toned lights instead of harsh white ones. A star filled sky is as much a part of the Maldives’ natural heritage as its beaches and lagoons.
More than anything, I hope travellers are inspired to pause and look up when they are here.

The Maldivian night sky is not only beautiful, it’s a reminder of how vast the universe is and how lucky we are to witness it. For me, lying under the stars has always been a humbling gift. And in the Maldives, that gift shines brighter than almost anywhere else in the world.

LOVERS LOST TO THE SEA & Dhon Hiyala Alifulhu
Written By: Meera Moosa
What started as a folk poem that once danced on the lips of storytellers, the love of Dhon Hiyala and Alifulhu was later immortalised in writing.
Much like Shakespeare’s tragic tale of Romeo and Juliet, the Maldives too, has its own version of a tragic love story.
What started as a folk poem that once danced on the lips of storytellers, the love of Dhon Hiyala and Alifulhu was later immortalised in writing.
The story begins on the shores of Buruni Island in Thaa Atoll, where Aisa lived with her husband Moosa. Though wealthy and in love, their lives were overshadowed by grief. For six long years, every child they conceived was lost at birth.
Aisa became pregnant once more. Fearing the same fate, she was unable to conceal her sadness. The day of birth arrived, and the couple grew anxious. Through whispered prayers and flickering shadows, Aisa gave birth

to a healthy baby girl — so beautiful she seemed to light up the room. Moosa held her close and whispered, “My little Dhon Hiyala.” Knowing how quickly joy can draw envy, Moosa offered compensation to the midwife to keep the birth secret. She told the islanders that the child was stillborn. Moosa then built a hidden chamber in his home, where Hiyala grew up alone shielded from the world.
Meanwhile, on Hulhudheli island, famous for jewellers, lived a young man named Alifulhu. Although he came from wealth, he was humble, intelligent and handsome. Like his people, he too, was a talented goldsmith.
One night, a voice whispered to him in a dream: “On an island far away, you will find the love of your life. She is your destiny.”
With the voice still in his head, he went to his father and explained his desire to travel. Although reluctant, his father agreed on the condition that a boat would be built just for him. When it was ready, Alifulhu set sail. He travelled through many days and nights until he finally reached Buruni.
Within weeks, Alifulhu settled in Buruni. With his charm and skills, he became the island’s finest jeweller. Word of his talent reached Moosa, who invited him to dine at their home. Aisa prepared a scrumptious feast but when Alifulhu took his first bite, he winced. “It’s too salty,” he said. Aisa apologized and returned with something sweeter. Alifulhu took a bite and said, “This hurts my throat.”
Puzzled, Aisa asked her daughter for help. Although she was suspicious that Alifulhu only wanted to see her, Hiyala agreed. She took a cup of unwashed rice, added some water and put in her final ingredient: a handful of salt. She paired the rice with moldy rihaakuru and stale dried tuna and called her mother to take the plates.
Alifulhu took a bite, then another, until the plates were empty. He smiled and said, “This is delicious.”
The next day, Hiyala asked her father for gold bangles. Moosa ordered some from Alifulhu, but without measurements the first pair was too large and the second too small. “Let me see the wrists I’m making bangles for,” Alifulhu said.
Hiyala’s hands were shown through heavy drapes, just enough to take the measurement. Alifulhu was left speechless — her hands were so beautiful.
had been discovered, sat in silence. But Aisa comforted him, saying, “He is kind, hard working and handsome. Perhaps a good match for our Hiyala.”
With the blessings from her parents, Dhon Hiyala married Alifulhu that night. The couple spent the rest of the night blissfully unaware of the fate that awaited them.
On an island far away lived Fagiru, a wicked man. One night, he dreamt of a hidden beauty on Buruni Island, a woman so radiant she seemed like a faiymini. He woke up with a desire to find her.
Next day, he pretended to be blind, claiming he sought help from Buruni’s healers. On his journey, he passed through a royal channel near Male’, and told the guards, “I will return with great fortune for the King.”

That evening, he delivered a pair of bangles to Moosa. When Hiyala slipped them on, they fit perfectly.
That night, unable to sleep, Hiyala quietly slipped out of her house for the first time. She went to Alifulhu’s workshop and found him sleeping. “Alifulhu,” she whispered. Alifulhu opened his eyes, thinking he was dreaming. Hiyala laughed. They sat together talking, unaware that night was turning into dawn. Before Hiyala left, Alifulhu promised to ask for her hand in marriage.
Next morning, Alifulhu asked Moosa for his blessings to marry Dhon Hiyala. Moosa, heartbroken that his daughter
As he neared Buruni, Fagiru saw Alifulhu returning from fishing and pretended to fall into the sea. Without hesitation, Alifulhu dove in to save him. Fagiru, feigning blindness, said, “I have come seeking medicine. I know no one here.”
Pitying him, Alifulhu brought him home. Hiyala felt uneasy but Alifulhu assured her, “He is harmless.”. Days passed, and Hiyala’s discomfort grew. One afternoon, while Hiyala bathed in the gifili, Fagiru hid in the shadows and watched her, confirming she was the woman from his dream.
The next day, Fagiru left to Male’ and went straight to the king. “A faiymini lives hidden in Buruni,” he said. “She is fit to be yours.”
Two days later, the king and his fleet arrived in Buruni. They reached Hiyala’s house and found her alone. When the king spoke to her, she ignored him.
When Alifulhu returned, the king ordered him to divorce Hiyala. Alifulhu refused. Furious, the king commanded his guards to attack. Alifulhu fought back fiercely. He broke free and grabbed Hiyala’s hand, and ran.
They leapt into their boat and set sail as the king’s fleet followed. Waves crashed violently as the royal ships closed in. Exhausted, Hiyala turned to Alifulhu and whispered, “I would rather die with you than be taken away from you.”
Tears filled Alifulhu’s eyes, “I love you.”
“I love you too,” she replied.
THEY LOOKED AT EACH OTHER ONE LAST TIME. HOLDING HANDS TIGHTLY, THEY JUMPED INTO THE RAGING SEA — CHOOSING LOVE IN DEATH OVER LIFE APART.

It is said that their bodies were washed ashore and were buried side by side on an island
in Thaa Atoll, where the wind and waves still whisper their names: Dhon Hiyala and Alifulhu.
