THE PHILIP GLASS ENSEMBLE| LA BELLE ET LA BÊTE
FILM BY J ea N COCT eau | MUSIC BY ph ILI p GL ass
CONVERSATION WITH ph ILI p GL ass
One of the most celebrated and unique works in Philip Glass’s recent career is his live interpretation of Jean Cocteau’s masterpiece La Belle et la Bête. Originally conceived as part of a trilogy of stage productions celebrating the work of Jean Cocteau, La Belle et la Bête is Glass’s most challenging experiment in synchronizing music with film. For this production, Glass removed the film’s original dialogue track and score by Georges Auric and replaced it with his own musical score played live by members of the Philip Glass Ensemble. The dialogue is sung by live singers synchronized with the actors in the film. Not staged in New York City in over two decades, this special production is presented by The Town Hall and Tribeca in association with Pomegranate Arts, and features a Conversation with Philip Glass prior to the film.

Legends of South African music reunite for a historic concert to tell the story of The Jazz Epistles, the most important jazz album ever to recorded in its country’s history. Abdullah Ibrahim welcomes special guest musicians from the his youth — superstar trumpeter Hugh Masekela — along with the original trombonist from that session, Jonas Gwangwa, to reimagine music for his Ekaya chamber ensemble, music that was almost lost forever — only 500 original copies were made in 1959, then buried, only to be rediscovered decades later after the tyranny of apartheid.

The Historical Town Hall
On 43rd Street, between Bryant Park and Times Square, stands The Town Hall - a testament to equality, inclusiveness and social progress.
Founded by suffragists in 1921, The Town Hall was created to educate people on the important issues of the day. It became one of New York City’s premiere performance halls, playing an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of the city for 95 years.
One of the greatest singers in the world, Marian Anderson , performed her first New York City recital at Town Hall on December 30, 1935. She continued to perform at Town Hall for 15 years before the great opera houses permitted a woman of color to sing on their stages.
Dedicated to it’s founding principles - to educate and and inform the public - the Town Hall created a series called America’s Town Meeting of the Air . It was one
of the most influential radio programs of the 20th Century and ran for 21 years. Guests included Eleanor Roosevelt , Richard Nixon , l angston h ughes , Jackie Robinson , Joseph McCarthy and hundreds more.
The Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones and debuts, like April 12, 1963, when a young Bob Dylan performed his first major concert, or 1967 when l eonard Cohen made his stage debut at a Vietnam protest concert hosted by Judy Collins.
Garrison Keillor and Prairie Home Companion have broadcast from The Town Hall for twenty five years. Dizzy and Bird introduced bebop to the world at Town Hall. Nina Simone , Charles Mingus , Pete Seeger and dozens more recorded acclaimed albums from our stage. l earn more.
