Aa n electrifying performer with one of the most distinctive and expressive voices in popular music, strong, textured, sensual but also suggesting a touching vulnerability, Buika appears at t he t own h all as part of Winter j azzfest on j anuary 12, 2018.
i n this concert, the opening show of her t iger Eye World t our 2018, she will premiere her new EP, titled Para Mi ( For Me ), featuring a sound she defines as “a mix of flamenco, a frobeat, reggae, and r &B.” i t has earned Buika her first G ramm Y nomination in the Best World m usic a lbum category.

t he passionate, flamenco underpinnings of “ d ios de la n ada,” her striking version of i talian composer Enza Pagliara’s taranta “Pizzica de t orchiarolo,” or her soulful lament in the “Para m i” underscore Buika’s ever-expanding range and global reach.
Born m aria c oncepción Balboa Buika of Equatorial Guinean parents immigrants in the s panish island of Palma de m allorca, she burst onto the a merican scene in 2007 and has since won high praise from t he n ew York t imes, t he m iami h erald, and t he Wall s treet j ournal, as well as n P r , which included her in its gallery of “50 Great v oices” and featured her in a t iny d esk c oncert. a long the way she earned comparisons to singers such as n ina s imone, c havela v argas, and c esaria Evora.
Buika has been based in m iami since 2011 and is currently working on songs in English and s panish for a new release later in 2018.

“Give me everything,” she once said. “Give me copla, give me jazz, give me flamenco, give me bolero, give me the blues. a t the end, each one of them will prove small because, at the end, every style carry its own limits - and i ’m a free [musical] note and don’t have limits. t hose styles are wonderful, but they are just worlds in a vast, vast universe.”

Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 90 years. A group of Suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Since, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: The US debuts of Strauss, and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
