Thank you for joining us this evening as we conclude the 19th season of Broadway by the Year®. The support of our subscribers makes this series not only possible but fun. And a special thanks to our Charter subscribers, those individuals who have been with us for all of the 19 years: season by season, year by year, show by show.

While some of us remember Broadway from the 30’s and 40’s going forward, we think it is safe to assume that most all of us remember Broadway from 1988 and 2017. Talk about two years of amazing musicals and plays. Phantom of the Opera went to the Tony Awards with 10 nominations and walked away with six. In 2017, Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 led the pack with 12 nominations, but it was Dear Evan Hansen that walked away with the Best Musical Award and six wins. Dear Evan Hansen continues as an unqualified hit now in its 2nd year, and Phantom is still packing the house after 30 years.

Trying to imagine what musicals will look like in 2048, thirty years from now is probably futile, but we know two things for sure. First, Town Hall, a National Historic Landmark, will still be singing the songs of Broadway. And to make sure that happens, we have begun a series of projects with the Rockwell group (beginning with the cleaning and lighting of our façade) that will help us celebrate our 100th Anniversary in 2021 and help us envision the 21st Century Town Hall for many, many years to come. Later this fall, we will be announcing our future plans and we hope you will stay tuned. In the meantime, if you are interesting in helping celebrate our centennial, please give us a call at (212) 997-1003.

And the other thing we are fairly sure of in 2048, the marquee at Majestic Theatre on 44th street will read – “Now in its 60th Year - The Phantom of the Opera.”

Thank you all,

The critically acclaimed series has blossomed from an idea to what Show Business Weekly deems, “...an invaluable and entertaining jewel in the cabaret crown of New York.” Ticket sales have soared and stellar reviews have included The New York Times , which calls it, “Witty, breezily paced... informative ... valuable... the right perspective of lighthearted nostalgia...”

Author/Critic s cott s iegel created the series for Town Hall, which he writes, directs, and hosts. s iegel takes audiences of all ages on a musical tour of the g reat White Way, offering an entertaining verbal account of Broadway’s history. Each evening this season celebrates the songs from Broadway shows from two different years, divided only by an intermission. The songs are performed by a cast of handpicked Broadway and nightclub stars.

SCOTT SIEGEL

s cott s iegel has created more than 300 major concerts that have been performed all over the world. He has written/produced/directed concerts for Michael Feinstein, created scores of nightclub acts that have played at major clubs around the globe, but is, perhaps, best known as the creator/writer/director/host of Town Hall’s signature series, Broadway by the Year®, which is currently celebrating its 18th critically acclaimed season. For more information about all of s cott’s shows, please visit s cott’s website at s iegel p resents.com

R OSS PATTERSON

TOUR THE HISTORIC TOWN HALL

Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 90 years. A group of Suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Since, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: The US debuts of Strauss, and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
