dear broadway@ guests:
Welcome to the final broadway @ the town Hall concert for 2019, our debut year. We congratulate seth and his guests, audra, Kelly and Jeremy for creating, hosting, sharing and entertaining us. thank you. We are delighted that all of you have joined us tonight, especially all of you who subscribed for all the shows. What a fun and amazing series it has been.
When the league of Political education opened town hall in 1921, they envisioned it as a meeting house for all New Yorkers. it was early on when they discovered the acoustics, designed to carry the human voice, worked equally well for musical performances.
so town hall became the venue where everyone wanted to have their debuts. alice tully has her own hall, but she had her debut here. and isaac stern helped save Carnegie hall, but he too had his debut here. We hope you will visit our halls of history on the Mezzanine. You will get a glimpse of some of the luminaries who have grace our stage.
in 2021, town Hall will celebrate our Centennial anniversary. Part of the celebration will be the modernization of the halls of history, connecting the past to our future.
if you’re interested in helping the town Hall foundation envision the 21st Century town Hall, please email info@thetownhall.org with the subject line “town Hall Centennial” or call (212) 997-1003.
Your involvement will help make possible the continuation of town hall’s rich tradition of bringing the widest range of voices and performers from all over the world to audiences in New York and beyond.
on behalf of the trustees of town Hall foundation, thank you for joining us tonight.

town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of new york City for more than 90 years. a group of suffragists’ fight for the 19th amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. during its construction, the 19th amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 the town hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. in 1921, German composer richard strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. since, town hall has been home to countless musical milestones: the us debuts of strauss, and isaac stern; Marian anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
