Dear Friends,

Earlier this month, we celebrated the late, great Jack Doroshow, aka Flawless Sabina. As part of the celebration, we screened The Queen, the documentary film about the legendary drag pageant that Flawless presided over at Town Hall in 1967. At the Hall that night was contest jurists Andy Warhol, Jim Dine, Bruce Jay Friedman and Jerry Leiber. In the audience, the notables included Edie Sedgewick, Jill Kremetz, George Plimpton, Larry Rivers and Terry Southern.

Four years earlier, in April 1963, a relatively unknown 21-year old Bob Dylan took the Town Hall stage in what would be his break-out concert. We are proud of those evenings, as they stand among the great nights at Town Hall. Not only because of the entertainment they provided, but because these were among the events at Town Hall that moved our culture forward. The world would never be the same.

Part of the fun watching The Queen movie was seeing what Town Hall looked like 50 years ago. We are happy to report, it looked pretty much the same as today. As Town Hall begins to prepare for its Centennial in 2021, we have begun the process of restoring the Hall to match its original beauty. The first phase, already underway, involves the cleaning and restoration of the façade. If you are interested in learning more about our plans and finding out ways you can be part of our 100th Anniversary, please call either one of us, our Director of Membership – helen Morris, or our Director of Development – Jacqueline Maddox. We all can be reached at (212) 997–1003.

We thank you for coming to Broadway by the Year, now in its 18th year. We know you will enjoy another great night at Town Hall.

Enjoy the show!

A b OUT THE PROGRAM

The critically acclaimed series has blossomed from an idea to what Show Business Weekly deems, “...an invaluable and entertaining jewel in the cabaret crown of New York.” Ticket sales have soared and stellar reviews have included The New York Times , which calls it, “Witty, breezily paced... informative ... valuable... the right perspective of lighthearted nostalgia...”

Author/Critic Scott Siegel created the series for Town Hall, which he writes, directs, and hosts. Siegel takes audiences of all ages on a musical tour of the Great White Way, offering an entertaining verbal account of Broadway’s history. Each evening this season celebrates the songs from Broadway shows from two different years, divided only by an intermission. The songs are performed by a cast of handpicked Broadway and nightclub stars.

SC oTT S i EGE l

Scott Siegel has created more than 300 major concerts that have been performed all over the world. He has written/produced/directed concerts for Michael Feinstein, created scores of nightclub acts that have played at major clubs around the globe, but is, perhaps, best known as the creator/writer/director/host of Town Hall’s signature series, Broadway by the Year®, which is currently celebrating its 18th critically acclaimed season. For more information about all of Scott’s shows, please visit Scott’s website at SiegelPresents.com

Ross Patterson’s career in music has been as varied and eclectic as the many styles he loves to play. After completing his studies at The Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Ross spent two years on the road as Musical director for the Ice Capades before heading to NYC. There, he quickly became one of the most sought after pianists by singers. This led to Ross musical directing, arranging and recording for many of the top cabaret artists in New York. He has been honored twice with the Backstage Bistro award for outstanding musical direction. For the past eighteen years Ross has been the arranger, musical director and band leader for the critically acclaimed Broadway by the Year® concert series at The Town Hall.

TOUR T h E hi ST o R i C T o WN hall

Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 90 years. A group of Suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Since, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: The US debuts of Strauss, and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
