At the top of this year, The Town Hall celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the legendary night that Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo brought Bebop and Afro-Cuban rhythms to the hall. Here on December 22, 1947, they cemented their beloved collaboration into a brand new genre called Afro-Cuban Jazz. To close out this year, we return to bebop, this time with the genre’s crash landing with one of Japan’s great art forms- anime, and with one of the art form’s greatest creators- the inimitable Yoko Kanno.
It is difficult to overstate the impact of Cowboy Bebop’s score on anime and on composition at large. The beloved anime, with its inventive storytelling, lovable characters and unmatched visuals took the world by storm and has long been heralded as one of the best anime series ever. Twenty-five years later and young people still dress up as Spike and Ed for Halloween and at various conventions.
How rare is it, however, for the general public to hold music from a series so dear that 25 years later, fans still eagerly await vinyl rereleases, watch online live performances in the hundred thousands and stream tracks in the millions?
For those of you who don’t know why, you’ll find out tonight.
The Town Hall partnered tonight with multiple institutions who understood the importance of presenting this anniversary live score event. Crunchyroll, Bandai Namco and Anime NYC joined forces with The Town Hall to celebrate this incredible series and its score with the seriousness and affection it deserves and inspires.
We can think of no better artistic partner than Macy Schmidt and the all-female ensemble, The Sinfonietta, who have been pioneers in the growing field of live score concerts. Between Macy, her staff, Michael Shingo Crawford, Black Ink Presents, and The Town Hall’s very own Gloria Lee, the artistic process has been a collaborative project of selfless abandon and total devotion.
As we worked on this project and our team grew, we came to learn that there are no casual fans of “Cowboy Bebop.” For me, for Selena at Black Ink, for many others who worked on this project and for many, many of you reading this today, I know this to be true. To watch the series is to love it.
As The Town Hall expands our programming and what we consider concert music, we are turning to genres and mediums we haven’t presented before. Great composers have worked with materials of all sorts over the ages. We as listeners and curators must let our ears lead us regardless of the vehicle. If we do, we may find ourselves exploring bebop, rock and the blues on a random Thursday in November.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The Japanese anime TV series Cowboy Bebop has been hailed as a breakthrough animated television series and championed as “a new genre unto itself.” A critical and commercial success, it has been praised as a landmark anime and credited with introducing the genre to a wider audience of Western viewers. A crucial part of its success was its music, a wildly imaginative and eclectic score that added context and layers of depth to the action on the screen.
Celebrating the 25th anniversary of Cowboy Bebop’s premiere, The Town Hall and Crunchyroll, the leading anime streaming brand, present the music of Cowboy Bebop live performed by The Sinfonietta, an all-women and majority women-of-color orchestra led by Macy Schmidt on November 16.
The music for the 26 episodes that comprise the series was composed by Yoko Kanno, who formed the jazz and blues band Seatbelts to perform the music for the series.
“The experience at Town Hall will be watching episodes from the show with the music score played live by the orchestra,” notes Schmidt. “Town Hall has selected a number of episodes from Cowboy Bebop, and we’ll be playing the score to the film live synched up to the visual. The film-concert model has been done, but here it’s being done with anime and something that stretches so many genres musically. That’s part of what’s so exciting about this particular project. I think it’ll be particularly pioneering for people to come and see and hear.”
The Town Hall conceived the program, says Melay Araya, the venue’s new Artistic Director. “We’re expanding what gets done at the Hall and what is considered serious music. Yoko Kanno is a brilliant composer. We wanted to honor the 25th anniversary of Cowboy Bebop, chose a date near AnimeNYC, and reached out to Kanno, Crunchyroll, and The Sinfonietta. Folks perform this music, but it has never been done in this format.”
Cowboy Bebop is set in 2071. An accident has made Earth almost uninhabitable, and humanity has colonized most of the planets and moons of the solar system. The series follows the adventures of a group of bounty hunters (also called “Cowboys”) on contract to chase criminals and capture them alive in return for a reward. Their battered spaceship is called Bebop.
Searching for a fair description, reviewers suggested references to westerns, film noir, and sci-fi — with a touch of comedy. In a previous interview director Shinichirō Watanabe noted that her approach was a “big hit” with Cowboy Bebop. Watanabe was inspired by Kanno’s work, which led him to create new scenes, which in turn nudged Kanno to write more music. This counterpoint between the narrative and the music, not a standard approach, gives the visuals and the soundtrack a distinct energy.
For Schmidt, who has been watching the series, “the one thing that’s already very clear to me is that Cowboy Bebop has created its own genre,” she says. “It’s so genre-bending. You can’t put it in a box, this genre or that, and I think it makes it a pioneer in its own space.”

Lyricist and songwriter, arranger and music producer, Yoko Kanno has composed music for movies, TV dramas, TV commercials, animation and video games. She has produced and written music for many artists as well. Her masterpieces include “Cowboy Bebop”, “Genesis of Aquarion”, “Macross Frontier”, “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex”, the movie “Our Little Sister”, and the NHK historical TV drama “Naotora: The Lady Warlord.”. She also composed the great eastern Japan earthquake (Fukushima) recovery support song, “Flowers Will Bloom - Hana wa Saku –”, in which she made many different arrangements. In the first year of the new Reiwa era, she composed the Japanese emperor’s enthronement celebration song, “Ray of Water”, and dedicated the performance to the emperor and the empress in front of the imperial palace. Most recently, she composed the music for the Netflix version of “Cowboy Bebop” and “The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House.”

"What makes this score special to you ?"
At that time, in 1995, a miraculous session was born from being in that place. A director who loves music started singing a song fascinatingly and freely. There were lots of wonderful musicians and singers Many are still active, but some have returned to the stars. Just as Spike and the crew happened to be on the Bebop, I enjoyed that space trip and am still in a dream that I can't wake up from.

"What was your process in composing Cowboy Bebop?"
I have been to NY many times and am affected by lots of things, such as taxi drivers, food cart clerks, graffiti on the walls, people beating drums on the street, white smoke coming up from the street, smell of construction sites. I took helicopter rides, long limousine rides and went to the opera house.
I also have been to the Native American's sacred sites, like the one Laughing Bull is in. I have recorded a lot of music in NY. The color of red earth, the smell of smoke, and the aroma of various spices are all in the bebop music .
A first-generation Egyptian-American who recently became the first woman of color orchestrator in Broadway history, Macy Schmidt is an honoree of the 2022 Forbes 30 Under 30 List in Music (alongside talents such as Olivia Rodrigo & Willow Smith) for her work as the Founder/CEO and Music Supervisor of The Broadway Sinfonietta, the acclaimed all-women and majority women-of-color orchestra. With an impressive resumé of high-profile international engagements spanning the globe — from Music Supervising entertainment pieces for the
2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, to projects in the UK, the Middle East, and India — Macy has quickly risen to the top of her field as an artist, a businesswoman, and an advocate for women in entertainment. A Sony Music recording artist, her unique potpourri of creative entrepreneurship and esteemed musical reputation has also led her executive producing for TV/Media, creative music direction for pop & Broadway stars, speaking engagements, and more.

Cynthia is a New York-based music director and pianist. Broadway: Back to the Future, Company (2020 revival), Hadestown, Funny Girl, Kimberly Akimbo. The Sinfonietta is an all-women and majority women-of-color orchestra and production company renowned for its diverse and innovative creative direction and dedication to musical excellence. The Sinfonietta’s inaugural NYCbased orchestra, The Broadway Sinfonietta, was founded in 2020 by Egyptian-American Orchestrator & Music Supervisor Macy Schmidt, who was recently honored on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 List for her work with the Sinfonietta. The orchestra has performed with pop stars (such as Brandy and Jordin Sparks), in concert for feature films (such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse LIVE), and onstage as featured soloists for the opening number of the 2023 Tony Awards.
The Sinfonietta’s international footprint is rapidly growing, performing most recently in Abu Dhabi with an all Arab women orchestra for the Forbes International Women’s Day Gala honoring world leaders Hillary Rodham Clinton, Gloria Steinem, Malala Yousafzai, Billie Jean King, and Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska.
As a production company, the Sinfonietta has partnered with brands such as Bloomingdale’s, MAC Cosmetics, and The Atlantic Magazine to create original commissioned content, and been featured in outlets such as NBC, CBS, Rolling Stone, BuzzFeed, Forbes, TIME, TeenVogue, Elle Magazine, The Washington Post, The Today Show, and more.
As a headlining artist, The Broadway Sinfonietta recently made its live full orchestra debut concert presented by Carnegie Hall Citywide, and signed with Sony Masterworks to release recordings of Schmidt’s arrangements.
Fresh off the heels of a 70+ city nationwide tour, the Sinfonietta’s reach and impact has grown exponentially, now encompassing both a production arm (Sinfonietta Productions), as well as a management arm (SinfoniettaCreative Management), which provides representation and advocacy for women musicians across the industry as a whole. The company’s newest addition to its flagship ensembles, the LA-based Hollywood Sinfonietta, is set to launch in December 2023.

Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 90 years. A group of Suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Since, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: The US debuts of Strauss, and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
