thank you for joining us at the town Hall as legendary podcasters Karen Kilgariff and georgia Hardstark from My Favorite Murder celebrate the launch of Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered:
sharing never-before-heard stories ranging from their struggles with depression, eating disorders, and addiction, Karen and Georgia irreverently recount their biggest mistakes and deepest fears, reflecting on the formative life events that shaped them into two of the most followed voices in the nation.
In Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered, Karen and Georgia focus on the importance of self-advocating and valuing personal safety over being ‘nice’ or ‘helpful.’ they delve into their own pasts, true crime stories, and beyond to discuss meaningful cultural and societal issues with fierce empathy and unapologetic frankness.
My Favorite Murder is a weekly true crime comedy podcast hosted by comedians Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark. the first episode was released in January 2016. the podcast debuted as #25 on the itunes podcast charts and peaked at #3 on April 27, 2018. Weekly episodes regularly land within itunes’ top 10 Comedy Podcast chart. the podcast has 19 million monthly downloads.
Praise for the show notes how it normalizes an interest in true crime among listeners who previously considered themselves morbid or odd, discussing the sense of isolation and compartmentalization that often arises in those with outlying but healthy interests. Likewise noted is the predominance of female listeners, which is consistent with data showing true crime fans are predominantly female.
Known for her biting wit and musical prowess, Karen Kilgariff has been a staple in the comedy world for decades. As a performer, she has appeared on Mr. Show, The Book Group, and Conan. she then transitioned to scripted television, writing for shows like Other Space, Portlandia, and Baskets. Her musical comedy album Live at the Bootleg was included in Vulture’s Best standup specials and Albums of 2014.
georgia Hardstark has enjoyed a successful career as a food writer and Cooking Channel on-camera personality, which began with the invention of the farcical cocktail, the McNuggetini. she went on to co-host a travel/adventure/party show called Tripping Out with Alie & Georgia, and a regular gig on Cooking Channel’s #1 show, Unique Sweets. she capped that off as a repeat guest narrator on Comedy Central’s hit show Drunk History

Born in san Francisco in 1984, Alex Hawgood is a writer and journalist living in New York City. His first byline, a 100-word piece on skateboards designed by the sculptor Jeff Koons, was published in T: The New York Times Style Magazine in 2006 four months after he graduated from New York University’s Gallatin school of Individualized study. In the dozen years since, he has been a journalist for The New York Times covering digital trends, popular culture, youth subcultures, art, travel and L.G.B.t. issues. Last May, the times published a profile Hawgood wrote on Georgia Hardstark, Karen Kilgariff and the “My Favorite Murder” phenomenon with the headline: Grisly Murders and Serial Killers? Ooh, Tell Me More. His work has also been published in New York/ The Cut, Condé Nast Traveler, Departures, The Business of Fashion, Interview and Vogue. He is currently part of the masters of art program at Columbia University’s Graduate school of Journalism with a focus on politics.
“A book filled with all the best advice your mother never told you.” —Jenny Lawson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Furiously Happy
“Kilgariff and Hardstark bring a much needed dimension to our current, true crime fever dream—an empathetic, slangy dose of acidic humor, weary compassion, and nervous hope. their podcast is a joy to listen to and this book captures its energy and hilarity perfectly. You’ll never be as sexy as Karen or Georgia, but there is a chance they’ll keep you from being murdered.”
Patton Oswalt, comedian, actor, New York Times bestselling author of Silver Screen Fiend

Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 90 years. A group of suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. during its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 the town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer richard strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. since, town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: the Us debuts of strauss, and Isaac stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
