Welcome back to the third installment of Broadway by the Year® for 2019.
Quite often we are asked, why doesn’t town hall host a Broadway musical? After all, with 1501 seats, we would rank between the Winter Garden and the Neil simon in terms of capacity. to answer your question, we would suggest that you look at our back curtain which hides a concrete wall. examine the doors on stage right and stage left that open to very small entryways with no wings. finally, check out sloped ceiling. You can see there is no place to land a helicopter, change scenery, or bring in a giant ape.
town hall was built for public speaking, so that everyone could listen to and converse with a person or two. early on, our founders understood that the acoustics, designed for the human voice, worked equally well for music. And so town hall can only be used for concerts and public speaking. how great that with scott at the helm tonight, we will get both.

Author/Critic s cott s iegel created the series for town h all, which he writes, directs, and hosts. s iegel takes audiences of all ages on a musical tour of the Great White Way, offering an entertaining verbal account of Broadway’s history. each evening this season celebrates the songs from Broadway shows from two different years, divided only by an intermission. the songs are performed by a cast of handpicked Broadway and nightclub stars.

ross patterson’s career in music has been as varied and eclectic as the many styles he loves to play. After completing his studies at the o berlin Conservatory of Music, ross spent two years on the road as Musical director for the i ce Capades before heading to NYC. there, he quickly became one of the most sought after pianists by singers. this led to ross musical directing, arranging and recording for many of the top cabaret artists in New York. h e has been honored twice with the Backstage Bistro award for outstanding musical direction. for the past eighteen years ross has been the arranger, musical director and band leader for the critically acclaimed Broadway by the Year® concert series at the town h all.

Corbin Bleu is thrilled to return to town hall for another Broadway By The Year! he can currently be seen on Broadway in Kiss Me, Kate as Bill Calhoun/ lucentio (drama desk Nomination, Chita rivera Nomination). lianne Marie dobbs has portrayed classic roles like fantine in Les Misérables, lucy in Jekyll & Hyde, Aldonza in Man of La Mancha, and the title role in several productions of Jane Austen’s Emma. Notable appearances: Gershwin’s Of Thee I Sing (san francisco symphony), multiple characters in Himself & Nora (off-Broadway), a lead “diva” in duke ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies (NJpAC) helmed by Andre deshields & Nat Adderly Jr., White Christmas (1st Nat’l tour), guest vocalist with the fred Barton orchestra, and many 54Below evenings. her album, Everything Old Is New Again, can be heard on jazz radio in the tri-state area, or you may have heard her in commercials for dunkin’ donuts, Casper or Nespresso, and kids might know her characters from Transformers: Cyberverse, Yu-Gi-Yo! or the latest pokémon film. rick has performed across the country, from Carnegie hall to the Kennedy Center, from the Chicago theater to san francisco’s Curran. he is currently performing in Kiss Me Kate, his 7th Broadway show, for which he was nominated for a Chita rivera Award. he is also the recipient of a fred Astaire Award for roundabout’s On The 20th Century, and a Best singer Award for the role of frankie valli, in the original las vegas production of Jersey Boys. rick has been seen on tv in: The Newsroom, The Following, America’s Got Talent, Conan O’Brien and more. he also received the Best performance award, at the orlando film festival, for his role in the film virgin Alexander. he will be choreographing A Chorus Line this summer, at Cape playhouse, while his wife, Joyce Chittick, will be directing. rick also performs his one man show on cruise ships and at various cabaret venues.

ethan slater is a writer and actor living in Brooklyn, NY. he made his Broadway debut as spongebob in “SpongeBob Squarepants,” for which he was nominated for a tony Award for Best performance by an Actor in a leading role and won the drama desk, outer Critics Circle, theatre World and Broadway Beacon Award. he recently made his television debut on Law and Order: SVU, and can be seen this season on CBs’ Murphy Brown, Instinct, and the upcoming Fosse/Verdon series on fX, and others. Betsy Wolfe has established herself as one of the most versatile and keenly intelligent Broadway performers of her generation. she starred in the tony-nominated musical Waitress. prior to that, she played Cordelia, in the Broadway revival of Falsettos, which was filmed and currently plays on pBs she is perhaps best known for her critically acclaimed performance as Cathy in the off-Broadway revival of The Last Five Years she made her Metropolitan opera debut as ida in Die Fledermaus, and reprised the role years later. T o U r THE HISTORIC TOWN HALL
Town hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of new york City for more than 90 years. A group of suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. during its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 the town hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. in 1921, German composer richard strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. since, town hall has been home to countless musical milestones: the us debuts of strauss, and isaac stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, dizzy Gillespie and Charlie parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
