Grounds & Facilities Update
Hamilton Mill
The Millview recreational area project is in full swing. The landscaping has been removed and the pool decking is being renewed. Accent pavers are being installed where concrete was removed for pipe repairs many years ago. We look forward to seeing our refurbished facility. Flower installation was completed in early October. Irrigation issues at Parkside are yet to be resolved. Progress has been made, but even JEMC cannot find old information. We will have to start the permitting process anew due to this. Irrigation for Old Millwater off Hog Mountain is coming online. The center island has water and we will continue repairs in the spring to get water to the entire intersection. We hope to see a lot of homeowners at the November Town Hall for further updates. The end of the year brings the end of projects and planning for 2017. As always if you see anything amiss please report through the hmill.com website. Go to committees, G&F and go to the form to report. Thank you!
“I love living in beautiful Hamilton Mill and celebrating my 88th birthday. Thank you Ms. Howe! Happy Birthday from Hamilton Mill.

Hamilton Mill Association News
Hamilton Mill 2016
For the past several years, we’ve been lucky enough to help the Gwinnett Department of Family and Children Services by offering to brighten the lives of foster children through our Angel Tree. This year we are adopting 15 children from the Gwinnett foster system who are counting on us to make their holidays a little merrier. Here’s how can you help! The Angel Tree will be set up in the Lakeview clubhouse before the week of Thanksgiving. Each Angel on the tree will list 1-2 gifts for one of the 15 children we are helping this year. These children have many needs (such as clothes, shoes and underwear), but they also have many wishes. When you choose your Angel, fill out the coordinating slip with your name and turn it in to the office so we can track which gifts have been selected. All gifts will be due the first week of December. Please be on the lookout for more information via email. We also need volunteers and donations! Once all the gifts are bought and dropped off, we will need help wrapping and labeling the gifts... as well as delivering them! Please consider donating wrapping supplies like paper, bags, tape and bows so we can make the packages look perfect for these kids! We are so thankful to live in such a wonderful community filled with so many giving and generous neighbors. Happy holidays to you and your family. If you have questions or would like to volunteer to help, email hmillevents@gmail.com.

Mary Holloway Lung cancer patient
“I feel like a new person. It’s tremendous to know that I’m going to be here tomorrow.” Like anyone diagnosed with cancer, Mary had her fears. That’s why she chose Gwinnett Medical Center, with some of the area’s top oncologists, radiologists and advanced treatment options, as well as a full range of cancer support services. Today Mary is cancer free. Screening is an important tool in fighting lung cancer, because when it is found early, it is much more likely to be treatable. For more information on how you can get a lung cancer screening exam, go to gwinnettmedicalcenter.org/lungscreen.

Hamilton Mill Association news
How Hamilton Mill’s Borst Family is helping Gwinnett County Foster Care in a Big Way Q. How are you going about collecting these items needed? A. We pretty much tell everyone we know that if they are getting rid of clothes and shoes of any size, to give them to us! We have posted the need out on NextDoor and have a lot of involvement with our church as well. Once we get these items, we organize them into bins by size and sex, and store them until we can provide them to foster families during the monthly meetings. Or, if a family finds that they are getting a placement in the next hour, they can call on us to deliver the clothing needed for their foster child. The goal is to have items on hand so no foster parent or child has to be without the things they need. Q. So you guys are “the hub” for these bins and bins of clothing in your basement? Meet the Borst family–a sweet family of four living in Hamilton Mill for over seven years. Tomas Borst is the owner of The Cornerstop Café in downtown Lawrenceville (so, go on in for some southern cookin’!). Brenda Borst is a manager for a pharmaceutical company, and little Jayden and MaKenna Borst attend Puckett’s Mill Elementary school and are in Kindergarten and the 1st grade. In their free time, they like to play outside, go to Disney World and spend time hanging out with friends. And if you don’t think they are busy enough, they recently finished their training to be foster parents for the Gwinnett County Division of Family and Children Services. Over the past month, they have fostered several children and found an immediate need.
A. Yes we are! We have folded more clothes in the past week than we have since our children were born. Not that I’m complaining though! We are so thankful for all of the donations we have received so far from our neighbors in Hamilton Mill and the surrounding subdivisions.
Q. What inspired you guys to become foster parents?
A. We advertise before the meetings that there will be a clothing drive or a clothing swap, and foster parents can come in and get the clothes they need for their current placements or future placements in their home.
A. We have been thinking about fostering for a long time, and this time in our lives seemed like the perfect time to do it and give back to our community. Children have very soft spots in our hearts and the more we did research on it, the more we found out how bad the need was in Gwinnett County for fostering children. Q. What was the immediate need you found was necessary for foster kids and parents? A. When they place children in foster care, they come with nothing. When they get placed in a foster home, they come with very minimal essentials (maybe a toothbrush and clothes that are not in the best condition). The need to get the basic essentials is very high and something most of us take for granted. It’s not uncommon for children to be placed in homes after hours and you find yourself running to the store at 11:00 at night to get underwear, pajamas, basic toiletries, and things of that nature. So the idea is to start collecting clothing items and having them on hand for the kids and foster parents. I figured if we have this need, other foster families are in the same situation.
Q. What happens after you drop off the bins at the meetings in Lawrenceville?
Q. If people want to donate to your clothing drive, how can they get in touch with you? A. People can private message me (Brenda Borst) on NextDoor, or contact me at brendarae2@msn.com. In this season of giving (and cleaning out!) please consider setting aside your gently used clothes for boys or girls sizes 0-18 years and shoes of any size. The need for these donations is ongoing. If you want to learn more about foster care, Google Gwinnett Adoptive and Foster Parent Association (GAFPA).

“Movember” is here!
What is “Movember” exactly? Some people call it “No-shave November”, some refer to it as “Beard Season”, but some might not know the meaning behind it. Movember is the term used for an annual event involving the growing of mustaches in particular to raise awareness for prostate cancer. The Movember Foundation runs the Movember charity event, housed at Movember.com. The goal of Movember is to “change the face of men’s health.” By encouraging men (whom the charity refers to as “Mo Bros”) to get involved, Movember aims to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments, and ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths. Besides annual check-ups, the Movember Foundation encourages men to be aware of family history of cancer and to adopt a healthier lifestyle. So this is your friendly reminder to shave on the morning of November 1st, and then let is grow for the whole month! And when people ask you why, you can tell them you are an official Mo Bro, and it’s for a good cause.

November starts the winter tennis season. USTA league is first with 13 teams representing Hamilton Mill. Unlike Alta with all doubles USTA is the combination of 2 singles lines and 3 doubles lines. Singles in tennis is not doubles. Sometimes these matches are long because of the singles lines. The word ‘SINGLES’ sometimes brings a cold sweat to some Atlanta doubles players. Don’t worry if your team doesn’t practice in the winter, that’s why we offer singles, Friday and Tuesday night drills. We also have a round-robin and junior camp in November. Do not be left out! Tennis Tips
Tennis Tips - The lob.. from defense to offense The lob has been around since tennis began. It seems like I have been teaching that long. Everyone recognizes the lob as defensive. When you are out of position, throw up the lob. When you are in trouble, throw up the lob. Opponents at the net, throw up the lob. My opponents hate lobbers, throw up the lob. I don’t have any strategy, throw up the lob. I am playing the match not to lose, throw up the lob. We still do those lobs today but it is 2016 and the lob has gone through a makeover. It sounds like a realty show. The lob finally grew up and it is gone OFFENSIVE. Here are some tips to help to bring your lob up to date. 1. Follow your lob to the service line.
When your lob is hit behind their service line, you should move into the service line from the baseline. You and your partner will be side by side ready for 98% percent of the lobs. This is also a good strategy to stop someone from lobbing you. If your opponents hit the 2% every time then you better make sure you are playing the right team. 2. Lob over your opponent’s backhand side.
The backhand overhead (is that a shot?) is usually weaker than the forehand overhead. If the lob isn’t spectacular, no worries, your opponent most likely can’t hurt you. What happens frequently is that they hit a short weak ball that you can move up on and put the ball away with a passing shot. Don’t wait until after the match to figure out they were left handed.
can use tip #1. If you have trouble lobbing deep and it always goes out then just keep it high. If your lob is high enough then your partner can back up and get ready. You will still have a chance to win the point. If your lob is short and not deep then you might have a new partner next week. 5. Learn the dink (drop) shot after the lob.
One of the best tactics in tennis is hit the lob and dink the player who ran for the lob. Plenty of players volley to the net player. Pick on the player who ran the lob down. You might not win that point but they will feel for the next few games. It’s a great way to win points and tire your opponent out at the same time. 6. Pick on the weakest overhead.
In doubles, the overhead is really overrated. That is why your lob doesn’t have to be deep all the time. Your lobs don’t even have to be that good if your opponent’s overheads are that bad. How many people can hit two overheads in a row? You are nervous because they are swinging over their head but you returned harder forehands hit at you. See ya on the courts!
3. Disguise can be the key.
Hold your shot like you are going to hit a normal cross-court shot on your opponent. At the very last second, get under the ball and lift it over your opponent. The holding of the ball freezes your opponent and prevents him from reading what you are hitting. That split second can make a huge difference. If you lob like you bowling at the bowling alley then I guess you can always wear a costume to disguise yourself. 4. Height and deep matters.
The deeper the lob.....the better. The depth pushes your opponent back causing them to hit their next shot short or forcing them into an error. If I hit my lob deep enough, then I
