History of the U. S. South Mississippi, United States One may understand a society today only by looking at its past. The United States of America, particularly the American South, has endured upheaval, tragedy, and finally, a renaissance, and in doing so, impacted the entire country. Cultural norms exist and as a result, communities think and behave in particular ways… but why? As we witness a shift in the relationship between the global powers of the world, now more than ever we must look to the past to gain the wisdom we need for the future. This two-week History of the U.S. South course, run in partnership with the University of Mississippi, will explore the rise and fall of slavery in the American South, with special emphasis given to the American Civil War, the civil rights movement of African Americans in the mid-twentieth century, and its impact on modern America. Through IES Abroad, SAF manages end-to-end logistics including curriculum development, pre-departure support, health and safety orientation, housing, transport, academic coordinator, site visits and high-level staff support for all students and staff on the program.
