Payne Center continues to grow, add services for campus recreation
The Payne Center has recently renovated some features and made some new additions to its recreation services.

A
fter enduring the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, USM’s rec center has enjoyed the return of students amid more normal operations and has enacted future plans to renovate and build onto the facility. The Payne Center has served as the hub of campus recreation for the University of Southern Mississippi for nearly 30 years after its construction in 1993. The rec center adapted during COVID-19 by moving
some exercise classes outside or spreading out on the larger courts and also delved into online capacities such as live streaming and even creating Esports tournaments as a part of its intramural competitions. But the Payne Center has returned to more normal operations in the 2021-2022 terms, bringing back more students and continuing a plan of additions and renovations. “Compared to the last few years, we’ve seen a lot more activity. Our basketball courts are always busy now…we are seeing great responses from students in a couple of the special events
that we’ve had and we’ve got a couple more that are coming up that I anticipate having a really nice turnout,” Assistant Director of Marketing for Campus Recreation April Jordan said. “I’m seeing them come and look for things to do- they want to get back and be active. I think we all kind of got sedentary during the pandemic so [they’re looking] for reasons to just have fun.” The rec center has its mainstay features such as its four multi-purpose courts, an exercise track, a natatorium, Pride Field and its WorkOut Zone, but they have had to adapt to

changing trends in recreation. For example, the Payne Center added a 30-foot high and 40-foot wide rock climbing wall in 2016 to accommodate the growing interest in rock climbing, as well as new fitness stations outside. The Payne Center also added a subscription exercise program, F45, to the center as well in 2020. And on the other hand, the staff at the Payne Center have had to reutilize other spaces in the center that are no longer utilized as much, such as the racquetball courts.

NEWS Payne Center CONTINUED FROM PG. 1 The constant change in student interests is something that the staff at the Payne Center monitors, as well as any needed updates for the facility. “That’s something we’re always monitoring as well as just updating the facility and keeping it current,” Assistant Director of Marketing for Campus Recreation April Jordan said. “If you’ve been in recently, you’ve seen that we have redone all the carpeting, which is a big deal to us and it looks and it just makes it look fresh. As far as reutilizing spaces right now, we are currently in plans of bringing something new to the space formerly occupied by our Wisteria circuit training room.” One of the most exciting additions to the Payne Center is its recently opened escape room, Eagle Escape. We have a great gym and we will encourage you to come use it but if that’s not your thing, that’s fine,” Jordan said. “We want you to find your place in- your fit in our facility. Bringing an escape room is an out-of-the-box idea that we’re trying and we’re very excited about.” The escape room opened in early April after around seven months of preparation and while Jordan said some have come close to escaping, no group has yet to successfully escape within the time limits. And on top of the additions, the Payne Center is finishing renovations to its flooring while looking to make other changes soon. Jordan says that despite the facility’s rising age, it has aged well. “There’s always going to be wear and tear in a building but I will say that each year, we go into other facilities…and I’m amazed at how well our building is holding up compared to even

Survey Opportunity for Journalism Capstone The journalism captone class is working on a project that will be released April 29. Following the sexual assault protest on campus, students started a petition for a zero tolerance policy to the university that has yet to be adopted by USM. This project studies sexual violence on USM’s campus, student’s interest and campus climate. Since the project revolves around USM students, the class has created a survey to gather statistics. This survey helps these journalists understand the climate on campus as it relates to sexual assault, harassment and victim-blaming. Please consider taking the survey below.

ABIGAIL TROTH PRINTZ REPORTER April 2 was recognized as World Autism Awareness Day. People took two minutes out of their day to make an Instagram post, Facebook story or simply post the same graphic from last year to recognize the date. That, or some people didn’t recognize it at all. It is of the utmost importance to recognize autism and the spectrum. Neurodivergence is a common part of our world and a previously unrecognized majority. However, as this slowly becomes a more widely accepted part of society, there are certain things that still make it seem like we are a long way from acceptance. While autism is recognized throughout April, it is done in the entirely wrong way. Hashtags, lectures, social media posts and other mediums consistently use the phrase “autism awareness.” While most might not realize the negative connotation surrounding this phrase, it can be quite harmful nonetheless. Autism is nothing to be “aware” of. There is an implication in this phrase
that we must be concerned about. It implies that autism is a frightening, harmful neurological disease that can affect anyone. In reality, autism is being vilified. So far during April, lectures have been held to give attention to autism awareness, even on our own campus. These speakers preach acceptance and respect, yet consider a normal part of basic humanity something that must be cured. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 1 in 44 children have been identified with autism. Autism also occurs in all socioeconomic, racial and ethnic groups. In other words, anyone can be on the spectrum. For this month, and every month following, autism should be celebrated. It should not be treated as a curse or a hindrance, but rather as something that makes the spectrum unique. Not a single one of us needs to be the same. Autistic people and those who are on the spectrum are worthy of respect.
Sean Smith|Printz The first step to acceptance is viewing this month of recognition as a month of celebration. There is nothing to fix. People with autism are just that–people. So rather than making them out to be sick or needing to be cured of this “disease,” we should view them solely as people.
Not a single human is the same. We have differences, and it’s a natural part of being human. Having autism doesn’t make someone more or any less human than someone else. Those that are on the autism spectrum must be recognized as people who are worthy of love, respect and above all, acceptance.

Instead, there were dramatic twists and turns, often leaving viewers wondering what was next for the Banks family. Will Smith is a teenager from West Philadelphia who has everything going for him. His grades, social life, and extra-curricular activities highlight the attributes that he contributes to the world. Attempting to save the life of his best friend, Will’s life changes forever as he is sent away from the only home he has ever known. He arrives in the prestigious neighborhood of Bel-Air to live with his aunt and uncle, unbeknownst to him, there are a plethora of obstacles that he will have to overcome in his new life. The main character, Will Smith, is played by Jabari Banks. Banks was the perfect fit for the role of Will, delivering a showstopping performance each episode. Will’s feelings are displayed through Banks’ unwavering talent of becoming emotionally vulnerable. This in turn, takes viewers through the ups and downs of a typical teenager. Banks has been criticized for being ‘over emotional’ in his roll of Will, but they should be praising him. His performance displays the raw, unfiltered emotions that one can feel throughout difficult situations. Will’s family is played by the likes of: Coco Jones (Hillary Banks), Cassandra Freeman (Vivian Banks), Jimmy Akingbola (Geoffrey Thompson), Olly Sholotan (Carlton Banks), Akira Akbar (Ashley Banks) and Adrian Holmes (Philip Banks). The additional characters within the Banks family are slightly different from the originals. Hillary is an intelligent chef and social media influencer, contrary to the bubbly airhead that was portrayed in the original show. Vivian is an artistic genius who chooses to hold back her talents to take care of her family. Geoffrey is a mysterious, intriguing character who also serves

as Philp’s personal hitman. Carlton is a drug-addicted, over-worked academic who strives to meet his parents’ expectations. Ashley is a playful pre-teen who is struggling to find her identity and Philip is perhaps the most complicated character of them all—secretive, vindictive and caring at the same time. The series is comprised of 1 season containing 10 episodes. It also is located only on the streaming service Peacock. This came as a surprise to fans that were awaiting the arrival of the show because they had to subscribe to a new streaming service. This was one of the only downsides to the show— not being available on common streaming services, such as Netflix or Hulu. Another downside is while the show possesses a great story line, viewers are often left with doubt at the end of the episodes, causing a ‘fill in the blank’ reaction. This can easily be fixed by the show’s producers who can incorporate a more defining dialogue between the characters where the intentions of their statements and actions can be easily understood. Overall, this is a show that you will not want to miss. It is messy, dramatic and displays the true chaos of families. Many can relate to this show because life isn’t always what it seems, especially when you are on the outside looking in. Everything is not glitter and gold, not even when you are wealthy like the Banks. The show provides a real take on what life can entail, the good, the bad and the ugly. Rating: 9/10

he Southern Miss softball team completed the weekend sweep of the UTEP Miners to extend their winning streak to four straight with only one loss in their last nine games. The Golden Eagles also celebrated Morgan Leinstock’s first collegiate no-hitter over the weekend, while Head coach Brian Levin won his 400th NCAA softball game. Game One: Southern Miss dominated the first game of the series with an 8-0 victory in just 5 innings. Leinstock led the way in her no-hitter with five strikeouts to record Southern Miss’ first no-hitter since Feb. 12, 2020. Leinstock now has 19 complete games on the season with a 16-6 record to show for it. “I feel amazing, this is the very first no-hitter of my softball career,” Leinstock said. “It feels

Southern Miss Baseball achieves highest ranking in program history JACKSON HOWELL PRINTZ REPORTER

outhern Miss baseball reached its highest ranking in program history Monday at number six in the D1 Baseball poll. The previous high was in 2009 after Southern Miss made their first and only trip to the College World Series in Omaha. This also marks the first top-10 appearance in the D1 Baseball poll since 2017. Numerous other polls rank Southern Miss high, including Perfect Game USA (#5), Baseball America (#7), Collegiate Baseball (#15 – a 12 spot increase) and the USA Today Coaches Poll (#6). The Golden Eagles soared up the rankings after an undefeated week featuring a home victory against Southeastern Louisiana and a road-sweep of FIU in Miami. Southern Miss has won nine consecutive games, bringing their record to 27-8 with 20 games remaining. This week poses a challenge for the Golden Eagles as they are set to play five games within six games starting with Tulane (24-121). Southern Miss defeated Tulane 7-2 March 9 at Pete Taylor Park.
