ith the click-clacking of red high heels against the pavement in Spirit Park, over one hundred men dressed in teal and blue gathered in support of sexual assault prevention and awareness. The Interfraternity Council and the Sexual Assault Prevention Ambassadors partnered together April 8 to host Walk A Mile in Her Shoes: The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence on campus. The walk began in Spirit Park at 11:30 am and ended in Fraternity Row around 12:30. “It’s a way for students to get involved on campus and in their communities to dedicate themselves to ending sexual violence.” Brocato said. “Specifically, it’s a way for men to get involved in ending sexualized violence as well.” Multiple resources were offered before the event started. Cash Money, a beloved campus therapy dog, was there as a comfort during the emotionally powerful day. The Shafer Center for Crisis Intervention in Hattiesburg was there to offer information, and the proceeds from the walk went towards the center. The Shafer Center is recognized for aiding survivors with
coping of sexual violence and assault, homocide and suicide. SAPA ambassadors were walking around the event, offering teal stickers for the color of Sexual Assault Awareness, information and resouces about their campus organization and personal accounts about their struggles. The IFC was at the event to promote a safe space and show that the USM fraternities support the survivors. he University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Business and Economic Development held its third annual Student Research Showcase this past Friday on April 8. Undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of business and marketing gained valuable research experience while working with faculty. Dr. Joanne Cao is the lead faculty for the event as an assistant professor at the School of Leadership. Cao says the event was inspired by a need for undergraduate students to share their research and form a community of research between students and faculty. In addition to the career experience and personal development, Dr. Cao hopes that students could make a difference in the larger field. “It’s a great opportunity to contribute to academia and literature,” Cao said. The showcase is part presentation, part competition. Undergraduate and graduate students gave presentations on their research projects, which were judged by members of the faculty. Each presentation lasted five minutes, followed by a round of questions. The projects could be as early as
proposal stages or completely finished, and cover a variety of disciplines under the College of Business. This year was the showcase’s largest, with 18 research projects students from both the Hattiesburg and Gulf Park campuses. Students also had the chance to win cash prizes. This year’s winners were as follows: Landon McFarland for Best in Proposal, Robbie McDonald for Runner Up for Best in Proposal, Faiyaz Hussain for Best in Final, Abigail Douglas for Runner Up for Best in Final and Ka’lon Duncanson for People’s Choice. Hussain is a graduate assistant at the Trent Lott National Center. His project was on the economic impacts of the Mississippi aquarium. It was one of the projects he was assigned as part of his work at the Lott Center. Hussain says the difference between graduate and undergraduate research is resources. “I think it’s just about the tools you have at your disposal and how much you want to do it,” Hussain said. The showcase came to be when faculty members at the College of Business saw the value of research and wanted to give undergraduate

students the opportunity to participate. A committee of students and faculty from each school in the College of Business worked with sponsors to put the event together. This was the first year the showcase was held in person since the pandemic began. In addition to the presentations, two seniors in the Honors College gave longer presentations defending their theses. One of them was senior marketing major Lauren Beverly and member of the committee that put the showcase together. She worked on the project for about two and a half years with her faculty advisor, Dr. Jayme Foster. Beverly says the relationship between students and faculty is essential.

“Marketing, our faculty, says, ‘we want you to research what you want to research - so go find something to research.” Beverly said. “The students really lead the whole process.” Her advice to fellow student researchers or those who may end on the research path in the future? “Find something you’re passionate in - it makes it a lot easier,” Beverly said. “And reach out to faculty.” Cao echoes that sentiment. “Be curious,” Cao said. “If you’re interested in doing research, start asking those questions and connect with a faculty member.” Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone.”

he University of Southern Mississippi’s Sexual Assault Prevention Ambassadors (SAPA) partnered with Title IX are spreading awareness of sexual assault with the presentation of The Clothesline Project: What Were You Wearing? The exhibition is housed in the Cook Library and features nearly twenty outfit recreations submitted by college students who experienced sexual assault. Survivors’ testimonials accompany the outfits and detail misconceptions about sexual violence April holds a significant value to victims of sexual assault by serving as the official Sexual Assault Awareness month, bringing attention to the heinous crime that changes lives of approximately 13 percent of college students per year, according to RAINN. The “What Were You Wearing?” campaign started at the University of Kansas to debacle the untrue phrase
of “They were asking for it” as if one’s clothing choices could result in assault. Senior criminal justice major, Adia Reed, led the committee that arranged the exhibition. Reed hopes the exhibition sends survivors a message of comfort. “Nobody’s alone in their struggles, but they are not ready to put their faces with their name,” Reed said. SAPA is hosting events throughout the month of April to spread additional awareness for sexual assault. Some of the upcoming events include the Sexual Assault in the LGBTQ+ Community Forum on April 19th and Denim Day on April 27th. The journalism captone class is working on a project that will be released April 29. Following the sexual assault protest on campus, students started a petition for a zero tolerance policy to the university that has yet to be adopted by USM. This project studies sexual violence on USM’s campus, student’s interest and campus climate. Since the project revolves around USM students, the class has created a survey to gather statistics. This survey helps these journalists understand the climate on campus as it relates to sexual assault, harassment and victim-blaming. Please consider taking the survey below.

Eden on Earth: The journey from seed to garden

A
s the temperatures rise and the greenery emerges, spring fever ensues. At the forefront of satisfying this demand are local gardeners, who dedicate their time and lives to making your flowerbeds and gardens possible. At 13 Sis Hobson Road in Hattiesburg, sits a six-greenhouse nursery filled with a variety of plants, including the familiar succulents, flowers and herbs, but also a unique selection of houseplants and foreign plants like the Chinese lantern flower. Behind the operations of Eden on Earth are Nick Altmyer and his wife, Kalena Luker, who have devoted their time to nurturing the nursery, which started as a personal project that has grown to house over 100 different types of plants. While the idea of Eden on Earth sprouted three springs ago, the idea was rooted in Altmyer’s deep history of gardening after nearly 58 years of experience. He started working for a preacher in a greenhouse at the age of 12 grafting camellias, riding his bike half a mile after school each day to work. There, he learned about plant tissues, how leaves grow and more scientific information, which eventually led him to pursue a horticulture degree from Mississippi State. After a career dedicated to caring for plants, Altmyer retired but found that he could not stop working, leading to the creation of Eden on Earth. He compares farmers to doctors in that they can never just “quit”. Luker described the work as never-ending and a job that requires constant planning but it’s the passion for that process that drives them out of bed and into the fields and greenhouses every day. “You’re outside all of the time and you’ve got to deal with the weather, but I enjoy the rain just as well as I do the sun,” Altmyer said. “To get everything else, you start working with this live creature, so it’s a good relaxation for me…when I’m in the back potting, I ain’t thinking about nothing but how this plant’s going to look three months from now or six months from today.” Luker did not start as early as Altmyer but described herself as always having an interest in plants. When Altmyer described the plan to start the nursery, Luker started researching online and learning more. As Luker and Altmyer poured more into Eden on Earth’s growth, it was impacted early by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. “A year of propagation-it takes three years to catch up for that,” Altmyer said. “They closed down and it’s taken a lot of time to get out and find stuff.” Luker played a key role in finding other plants, prioritizing that Eden on Earth finds more alocasias and houseplants, which were growing in demand with the constant influx of a younger demographic. “We have so many more young people that are starting to garden and do things like that…every year, there are more and more young people that are getting into it and it’s exciting to see a lot of people,” Luker said. For the nursery business, COVID-19 led to a positive, which was the surge in outdoor activities and hobbies. Eden on Earth carries over its mother plants that they start in the winter to the spring, which need protection from the elements. “I’ve gotten up many nights at two in the morning to go check and the heaters have gone off. It could be 30 minutes, an hour- I don’t know how long they’ve been out and it’s already cold in there,” Altmyer said. While the plants were kept safe through the winter, Altmyer and Luker also have to worry about the threat of Pine Belt’s severe weather in the spring with the possibility of thunderstorms and tornadoes. “The last one [storm] we had missed us by four miles and it was bad enough,” Altmyer said. “I was very lucky that we didn’t have damage…when they say thunderstorm and a line comes up like it was the other Eden on Earth propagates its plants on site. day, I’m on pins and needles.” After all the work and worrying about keeping their plants safe and healthy, Altmyer and Luker get to enjoy what they love the most- the customers. “The customers make me happy- it’s not a dollar thing,” Altmyer said. “It’s just the fact that they’re here. That means a lot.” And customers have shown up to Eden on Earth, rewarding their “labor of love”. As it gets closer to summer, Altmyer expects more potential customers, meaning it’s back to work for him, Luker and the Eden on Earth staff. Altmyer wants to let people know that while gardening may not be as simple as it seems, it’s achievable for everyone. “There’s a lot of people that come here and think they don’t have a green thumbthat doesn’t exist,” Altmyer said. “Each plant has what it does best. The most important thing is soil, water and light conditions, so everybody’s got a “green thumb” if they just ask somebody with that knowledge.” Eden on Earth features six greenhouses on site.

Red Hot Chili Peppers reunite with spunky ‘Unlimited Love’

ed Hot Chili Peppers released their reunion-like album ‘Unlimited Love’, marking their return with John Frusciante back on guitar after his electronic solo projects and over a decade split from the band. Starting off simple, I don’t like the album name ‘Unlimited Love,’ though that doesn’t measure its contents. I’m used to their titles such as ‘The Uplift Mofo Party Plan,” “Blood Sugar Sex Magik,” and “Californication”, which sound a little wacky but are entertaining and original. The album is on the longer side with 17 songs standing at an hour and 13 minutes, but I guess it could be justified considering its sentimentality of being their first album in six years and Frusciante’s first in 16. There is some sort of comforting appeal to ‘Unlimited Love’ with its mellowness, funkiness, subtle moodiness, and artistic and experimental lyrics, which honestly come as no surprise to the Chili Peppers’ identity and discography. ‘Poster Child’ really captures this funky and mellow attitude I mentioned–it’s got a dance-ability to it. It feels so true to the band, yet entirely new and I don’t know how. Inventive lyrics surface frequently throughout their album, such as “I just want the great apes to be free” on ‘The Great Apes,’ which is probably suggesting humans rather than actual apes. There are also multiple references to David Bowie on this album. Anthony Kiedis, the lead vocalist, sings, “like a black star in the sky” on ‘The Great Apes’ and “Rebel Yell” on ‘Poster Child’ though this song is accompanied by many classic rock references such as Robert Plant, Ramones, Yoko Ono, Talking Heads and more. are the Chili Peppers’ specialty. ‘Black Summer,’ which was released as a single, feels like one of the closest to late 90s Chili Peppers’ to me. ‘Here Ever After’ may be my favorite on the album, feeling very peppy, especially with Kiedis’ bouncy and rhythmic voice. Its groove is unlike the majority of the album’s groove, making it the perfect song on the album to head bob to. My other favorites are ‘White Braids & Pillow Chair’ and ‘One Way Traffic’ which are back-to-back on the album. ‘One Way Traffic’ is similar to ‘Here Ever After’ with its lively pace. It’s unique, story-like, and feels like a mood booster. ‘White Braids & Pillow Chair’ has catchy chords and is beautifully melodic, making me feel emotional each time I listen. ‘Let ‘Em Cry’ is a mix of the Chili Peppers’ spunky and groovy sound. It’s got a nice flow. After my first listen, I thought all of their best songs were placed toward the top of their album, but they’re scattered throughout. It’s just a good album. ‘Unlimited Love’ makes for their least intimidating album–it’s nostalgic and full of groovy, uniting, innovative jams. It feels like Frusciante never left. 8.5/10.

0. You Rock My World – Michael Jackson: This song is the ultimate groove, incorporating the perfect funk and feel. Outstanding production makes it a timeless classic on one of his most underrated albums ever. Chris Tucker’s hilarious banter with Mike makes it even more natural. 59. FourFiveSeconds – Rihanna: A song with Rihanna, Kanye and Paul McCartney is something we all didn’t know we needed. They all delivered and brought something different to this hit. The genuine and raw emotions showcased on this make it everything that it is. The legendary Beatles member doesn’t really sing on this but provides backing vocals and plays the guitar on the track. 58. a lot – 21 Savage: When 21 and Cole are on a track, it will always deliver. The sampling used on this song created a very melodic beat that the producers rode with. Mr. Savage begins to explain his personal story and problems with a great energetic flow. J. Cole murders his verse, making for one of the greatest rap features ever. It honestly cemented that GOAT status for him even more in my book. 57. F Love – XXXTentacion: This song introduced me to the whole genre of melodic/emo rap, which was rare to hear in rap and it changed my whole perspective on the genre. Trippie Redd sang his heart out on the catchy hook and the mellow yet colorful beat built the song. Trust me, 9th-grade heartbroken Carter loved this song with all his life and would look at me weird if I didn’t include it. 56. 2009 – Mac Miller: Continuing the trend of melodic, and depressive music, this song similarly encapsulates you beginning with beautiful strings and a simple piano that tugs at your emotions. This song is about how he is not letting his past control and affect him anymore. Mac Miller breaks it down in a very unlikely flow and he begins to describe his struggles and how depression was beginning to take over. He then recognizes there is a lot of more to life to live. It’s a beautiful triumph. 55. Cocoa Butter Kisses – Chance The Rapper: This is another song with many memories attached. My brother, shoutout to
Dolo, introduced me to Chance one morning getting ready for school and he’s been on my playlist ever since. He is talking about in this song how he misses the innocence of his childhood and how he genuinely wishes he could go back to this. Vic Mensa and Twista could have been left off the song and it would have been still as good. They added a lot of flavors to the song though. ‘Acid Rap’ is a great album and one of the best of the past decade. 54. Try A Little Tenderness – Chris Brown: Originally sung by the late great Otis Redding, his classic song was covered in ‘This Christmas’. Don’t argue with me, but I think Chris Brown adds a little variation and spice to it. The powerful and smooth vocals of Mr. Brown put his talent on display. Nonetheless, this is a great song with incredible musicianship by the band which also puts it over the original for me. 53. Hope – XXXTentacion: With this song being dedicated to the kids who lost their lives in the tragic Parkland shooting of 2018. it’s a feel-good song to inspire the survivors of such a horrible event to keep pushing and envision the future- a great one with no more pain and misery. A lot of people didn’t expect a song like this from X based on his catalog before this. It changed how people viewed him as an artist and a person. 52. XO Tour Llif3 – Lil Uzi Vert: This is a feel-good song and one of the biggest hits of 2017 that had everybody singing. It’s an absolute vibe with great production. I love this song and every time it comes on it brings back pure nostalgia and memories that I will never forget. 51. As – Stevie Wonder: Your grandad’s favorite artist makes his triumphant return to the list after grabbing last week’s No. 61 and 62. Simply put, this is one of the greatest songs ever made in the history of music. Mr. Wonder never fails to put on a smile on my face and delivers every time he is in front of a piano and singing. The production and pure talent of the musicians on this song bring it full circle. Arguably the best part is the breakdown with the band that jams along with Mr. Wonder and his outstanding vocal performance.

WrestleMania fights to live up to “stupendous” hype

restleMania 38 was a two-night star-studded sports entertainment event put on by the WWE on April 2-3 2022, drawing 156,352 fans combined. I’ll provide a recap of this event by going through each match night by night, as well as giving a rating from one to five Night One: The Usos (Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso) (c) defeated Shinsuke Nakamura and Rick Boogs by pinfall for the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship, 1.5 Stars. This match shouldn’t have been the opener. Instead, there should have been a higher energy match. This match was cut short on the fly due to Rick Boogs tearing his quadriceps. It was fine for what it was, but it gets a low star rating for being cut short to no one’s fault. Drew McIntyre defeated Happy Corbin (with Madcap Moss) by pinfall, 2 Stars. These first two matches really felt like this Mania was not going to be that good at all. This match wasn’t the most exciting and it just felt like they could have done better. All around, I’m glad this feud is over because Drew deserves better. The Miz and Logan Paul defeated Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio by pinfall, 3.5 Stars. Yes, you read that right, THAT Logan Paul. Paul did well for his first match. He really is a great athlete and looked great as well. This match was really fun and a step up from the last two matches. Bianca Belair defeated Becky Lynch (c) by pinfall for the Raw Women’s Championship, 4.25 Stars. What a match this was. This was definitely the best women’s match of both nights and told a great story. This match was awesome and the right person won with Belair winning her second women’s title.

Cody Rhodes defeated Seth “Freakin” Rollins by pinfall, 4.5 Stars. Cody’s return was as perfect as it could have been. He got an enormous pop and had the best match of the whole show with a phenomenal opponent. Charlotte Flair (c) defeated Ronda Rousey by pinfall for the SmackDown Women’s Championship by pinfall, 2.75 Stars. The finish to this match really diminished the rest of it. This match wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t great either. I personally don’t think Rousey is the best pro wrestler so I felt this was as good as it could have been. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin defeated Kevin Owens by pinfall in a No Holds Barred Match, 3.75 Stars. Austin really couldn’t have had a better opponent for his last match. The build to this impromptu match was great and Owens made Austin look great even at the age of 57. This was fun and made for a great moment with Austin ending his career on his terms. Night Two: RK-Bro (Randy Orton and Riddle) (c) defeated The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford) and Alpha Academy (Chad Gable and Otis) in a
Triple Threat Match for the Raw Tag Team Championship, 4 Stars. This is how a Mania should be opened. This was a really fun and exciting match that got the crowd going crazy. This match was great and it’s awesome to see Orton having this match fun with his career. Bobby Lashley defeated Omos by pinfall, 2 Stars. This match felt like it was good as it could have been. Omos is still improving and Bobby made him look good while still coming out as the winner. Johnny Knoxville defeated Sami Zayn in an Anything Goes Match by pinfall, 4 Stars. If you’re a fan of ‘Jackass’, then this is a match for you. This match was really fun and loaded with comedic spots that really made it stick out. Sasha Banks & Naomi defeated Carmella & Queen Zelina (c), Liv Morgan & Rhea Ripley, and Natalya & Shayna Baszler in a Fatal Four Way Tag Team Match for the Women’s Tag Team Championship by pinfall, 2.5 Stars. This match was fine for what it was. It definitely could have been better, but the right team won in a fun match. Edge defeated AJ Styles by pinfall,
4 Stars. This was a great match to no one’s surprise. I felt like it left a little to be desired, but the feud is continuing with the addition of Damian Priest to Edge’s side, so there’s hope. Sheamus & Ridge Holland (with Butch) defeated The New Day (Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods) by pinfall, 1 Star. This match was originally scheduled for night one but got pushed to night two due to time restraints. This match was still way too short and just felt out of place. Pat McAfee defeated Austin Theory (with Mr. McMahon) by pinfall, 3.5 Stars. This match was very fast paced and was pretty exciting with the crowd fully behind McAfee. Pat looked great for only his third match ever and the right man one. Mr. McMahon (with Austin Theory) defeated Pat McAfee by pinfall, 0 Stars. This match didn’t need to happen at all. It just felt weird seeing 76-year-old Vince McMahon jump and pin Pat McAfee. This was only to set up Stone Cold running in after, even then it still felt pointless. Roman Reigns (Universal Champion) (with Paul Heyman) defeated Brock Lesnar (WWE Champion) in a Winner Take All Match for the WWE Championship and Universal Championship by pinfall, 3 Stars. Going into this match was labeled “the biggest match in WrestleMania history” and it didn’t live up to that hype at all. It wasn’t terrible but it left a bit to be desired. It looks like Roman might have gotten hurt so they ended it early but even then, it could have been better. Overall, this was a pretty good show. The first night was far better than the second but both delivered exciting matches. A lot of the matches on the undercard over-delivered to make up for some of the big matches that didn’t deliver up to their hype. 8/10

Southern Miss Beach Invitational II ends with great competition and memories
he Golden Eagles finished the weekend with a 3-1 record in their four matches, but the highlight of the weekend was the celebration for the three Southern Miss graduating seniors, Breleigh Favre, Olivia Hepworth and Melanie Miller. Head Coach Shawn Taylor showed his respect to his seniors and discussed the weekend’s meaning to him and those seniors. “I think seven or so years ago and two Athletic Directors ago that Brett and Deanna asked me to come up and talk with Bill McGillis… and they were looking to add beach volleyball but they hadn’t committed to it yet and kind of talk about what it would take,” Taylor said “(Breleigh Farve and Olivia Hepworth) They were kind of the first of our players to really help kickstart this program… so to have that opportunity to help them see us build the program and experience some success while they were here is huge.” The Golden Eagles
opened the weekend in an early matchup against the ULM Warhawks. Before the matchup, Southern Miss had never lost to ULM in its history. Southern Miss dropped the first flight in straight sets, 17-21 and 11-21, but responded in a three-set battle as Valeria Siakidou Papakyriakou and Kai Norman won their twentieth match as a pair. Southern Miss fought to finish this weekend with a perfect record, but they could not overcome the No. 21 Tulane Green Waves in a 3-2 defeat. Tulane started the match with the first point at the fifth position with a twoset victory, 21-16 and

23-21. The second point was awarded to Southern Miss in a high-scoring three-set match where the first set ended with a 28-26 score. Southern Miss dropped the next set, but they did enough in the final set to claim the 15-9 victory to tie at 1-1. The second wave of matches started with a loss from the Garraway/ Hurnikova duo that gave Tulane a 2-1 point advantage. Tulane claimed their third point in the next match and ended the Golden Eagles’ chances when the Pierce/Hepworth duo fell in two sets, 18-21 and 12-21. The Favre/Chudzik duo fought in the final flight of the night to claim a two-set victory. This weekend brings the Golden Eagles’ record to 10-19 on the year after a 3-17 start to the season. Southern Miss gets a break before traveling to Tucson, Arizona for the Arizona Invitational. The Golden Eagles will face two currently ranked teams in the No. 17 Arizona Wildcats and No. 16. Long Beach State Beach on Friday, April 15. Southern Miss then finishes the Invitational against the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks and the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners on Saturday, April 16.
outhern Miss baseball went 4-0 in the past week, besting then No. 9 Ole Miss and ending the week with a sweep of Charlotte. The Golden Eagles have won 13 of their last 15 games and five in a row. In response, Southern Miss soared into the Top 25 rankings after just appearing in the polls last week. In the D1baseball.com poll, Southern Miss comes in at No. 11 after coming at the 18th spot last week, their first appearance. In the USA Today coach’s poll, Southern Miss jumped ten spots to No. 14 after appearing in the poll at No. 24 last week. Southern Miss’s overall record sits at 23-8 and 10-2 in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles also sit atop the Conference USA standings, ahead by one game over Louisiana Tech, whom the Eagles bested in a series earlier in the year. Slade Wilks (.342) and Dustin Dickerson (.339) have fueled hitting for Southern Miss. Hurston Waldrep (3-1, 1.93 ERA) and Tanner Hall (5-0, 2.17) have been lifting the Eagles for pitching. This week, the Golden Eagles will be looking to build on the momentum with a home game against Southeastern Louisiana and then hit the road again to take on Flordia International in the weekend series.
