New set of sculptures Hub City hosts raise awareness at LAB Halloween parade Chase Ladner Printz Writer The Liberal Arts Building has a new set of sculptures. “Homes for Everyone,” a series of art created by University of Southern Mississippi professor Jennifer Torres, is catching the eyes of students, faculty and fans of art alike. Torres used a research grant she won from the College of Arts and Letters to fund the set of sculptures. Each house featured in the sculpture is made of quarter-inch aluminum plates, according to Torres’s blog. The tallest measures about five feet. The sculpture contains statistics about homelessness in America, and some of those statistics apply only to Mississippi. “About three years ago, I almost
lost my house to the economic crisis,” Torres said. “I started to think of the idea of homes and how important they are.” According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness as of 2009, more than half a million people experience homelessness on any given night, with 2749 homeless in Mississippi alone the same year, according to Mississippi United to End Homelessness. These facts drove Torres to try to raise awareness about that issue through her sculptures. “As an artist, art is my voice,” said Torres. All sculptures are safe to be interacted with and are partly bottomless so people can go inside of the two taller pieces. The placement of the sculptures near a busy sidewalk and courtyard was purposeful in hopes of having students interact with the
art. “We are just lucky that the end result is something that students can participate in,” Torres said, in reference to her decision to use to money for the sculptures. “Houses for Everyone” will keep remain in its current location near the Liberal Arts Building until the spring 2013 semester. As part of the board that decides which sculpture will be put on display, Torres hopes to always have public art on campus. “People not liking [the art] is just as important as people liking it,” Torres said. “It gives us an opportunity to have a discussion of what is around us.” For more information about the process of making “Houses for Everyone” or more of Jennifer Torres’s work visit her website http://www. jentorres.com/ or her blog http:// jentorressculpture.blogspot.com/.

Rachel Beech Printz Writer The Avenues of Hattiesburg presented an inaugural Halloween parade on Tuesday night, drawing in hundreds from all over the Pine Belt area. Members of local businesses such as T-Bone’s Records and Cafe and The Thirsty Hippo participated riding in floats and throwing candy by the handfuls to onlookers. The parade traveled east down Hardy Street, starting at Parkway Heights United Methodist Church and ending at the Hattiesburg Zoo. The Avenues named Rex Thompson of WDAM and Ember Ahua as Grand Reaper and Pumpkin Queen in a statement last week. “We are excited about the addition of Rex and Ember to Hattiesburg’s first Halloween Parade,” said Brandon Thaxton, Avenues Alliance president. “Both represent the fun personality of our city and this event.” Cheerleaders, dance teams, the Hattiesburg High marching band and even the Hattiesburg Police Department dazzled Hardy Street with funky costumes and candy. Floats complete with colorful lights and smiling faces of Hattiesburg groups like Brownstone’s Restaurant and Comics & Stuff participated in the parade. Cub Scout Troupe 1323 stood on the side of Hardy Street by the Hattiesburg Zoo as they patiently waited in their Superhero and cartoon

character costumes for Halloween decorated floats to whiz by. The inaugural Halloween parade showcased the local breast cancer awareness group and the Pine Belt Pacers, however, everyday people were not the only participants in the parade. Zombies and ghosts spooked onlookers with their eccentric outfits and intricately painted faces. Junior broadcast journalism major Kristy Shelley emceed the parade, throwing in knock-knock jokes and entertaining comments throughout the night. “There are way more people here than I initially expected,” Shelley said. “I’m so excited to have the opportunity to do my part as a member of the Hattiesburg and Southern Miss community. Hopefully this parade will be one of many.” Local dynamites Jason LeViere and Adam Myrick, co-owners of Click Boutique and Gallery and Twelve Oaks Accessory Garden, spent most of Tuesday night judging the floats and costumes. Best costume went to “Half Naked Guy” Mike Herrington. Best floats: Third place was Nick’s Ice House, second place was the Hattiesburg High marching band and first place went to T-Bone’s Records and Café and The Thirsty Hippo. USM goes green at football games Kathryn Miller Printz Writer This football season the Student Government Association and the Office of Sustainability at the University of Southern Mississippi started a recycling program during halftime at home football games that informs fans about the importance of going green. “It was thought of as a unique, proactive way during a popular social setting where we could take advantage of the opportunity to reach out to both the university and community with recycling practices,” SGA Vice President Allie Solomon said. SGA members from all branches are teaming up to conduct the halftime recycling sweeps. SGA attempted its first sweep during the Oct. 6 game against Boise State.
“Members were paired up and assigned accordingly to the sections of the stadium on the
home side with blue bags for recycling and clear bags for trash,” Solomon said.
“It is important for students to know about recycling in The Rock because the success of the program largely rests on the willingness and dedication of students, like Allie, to lift the program to greater heights,” said Assistant Director of the Office of Sustainability Haley McMinn. However, game-day recycling is not the largest obstacle the Office of Sustainability faces. “The most difficult challenge the Southern Miss Green Initiative and the Office of Sustainability faces is culture,” McMinn said. McMinn added that many fans have grown up in a culture that has not been exposed to the green initiative. The two largest obstacles facing game-day recycling are manpower to cover a stadium with 25,000plus fans and the fact that consumer familiarity recycling have been
better managed, McMinn said. “This is the first large-scale community service/education outreach of this kind for recycling on campus to my knowledge,” Solomon said. “We received an amazingly encouraging response from students, faculty and from fans, both home and visitors.” Solomon and McMinn said the start of game-day recycling is beneficial not only to the environment, but also to culture. “The ultimate goal of the Southern Miss Green Initiative is to educate a society that will build a foundation in which future generations can find stable ground and programs such as the game-day recycling partnership,” McMinn said. The next game-day sweeps are scheduled for Saturday and Nov. 17.

1954 sorority pledge initiated in 2012 Carly Tynes Printz Writer Homecoming at the University of Southern Mississippi is a week filled with tradition. The women of Phi Mu sorority fulfilled their promise of upholding tradition and sisterhood when initiating a 1954 pledge sister into their chapter during Homecoming this year.
Dell Mechatto Martin of Belzoni, Miss., who is often called Lady Dell by friends and family, was officially initiated into the Alpha Omicron chapter of the Phi Mu sisterhood at Southern Miss. Lady Dell became a Phi Mu pledge in 1954 but had to leave the university before initiation because her grandparents became ill and other family obligations, leaving her unable to

become an official member of Phi Mu. After 58 years, Martin returned to the Southern Miss campus during Homecoming to be officially initiated and welcomed into the Phi Mu sisterhood. The journey to get Martin initiated began at the 2009 Homecoming game. Martin met Phi Mu alumna Carr Murphy Brown and instantly felt a connection. Martin said
the two became close friends, and that’s when Brown began the journey of contacting Phi Mu nationals to get Martin initiated into the chapter as an alumna initiate of 2012. Abby Schlosser, Phi Mu’s current ritual chair and senior speech pathology major, helped plan and run the initiation of Lady Dell Martin and said it was one of the sweetest experiences she has had as a Phi Mu thus far.
“The initiation was beautiful; there was literally not a dry eye in the room from start to finish,” Schlosser said. “It was so touching to see how happy her friends from her original pledge class were to witness her long-awaited initiation.” Cally Biagini, current chapter president and senior marketing major, said the ceremony was incredible to witness. “After the initiation, we had a reception at the house for her. Lady Dell received all sorts of Phi Mu gifts and was shown true Phi Mu love,” Biagini said. “Being part of Lady Dell’s initiation will always be one of my favorite memories. Even after 58 years, Lady Dell still embodies everything it means to be a Phi Mu. Her story is a sweet reminder of how special the bond of Phi Mu truly is, and our chapter was honored to finally welcome Lady Dell into our sisterhood.” Lady Dell’s words after her initiation to her Phi Mu sisters were simply this: “Thank you for helping my dreams come true. Thank you.”

‘Night Train’ takes a little ride to the top Josh Campbell Printz Writer
While all the buzz may be surrounding Taylor Swift’s new album, Jason Aldean is already enjoying success with his new album, “Night Train.” Through the first week of the album release, nearly half a million copies were sold, which landed him atop the Billboard Top 200 across all genres. Duplicating the success of an album that went double platinum, “My Kinda Party,” might seem difficult for most artists, but Aldean is well on his way to doing just that. The biggest hit of the album
thus far is “Take a Little Ride,” which sits sixth on Billboard’s Top 100 Country Songs. It will not be long until “The Only Way I Know,” featuring country music stars Luke Bryan and Eric Church, and “Black Tears” join the list. The album features a variety of tracks, all of which make one want to roll down the windows, turn up the volume and sing along. Aldean’s smooth country twang has carried him a long way after being dropped by three different labels before finding success. He had planned on giving up music altogether before being offered a deal by Broken Bow Records just a few weeks before he was scheduled to leave Nashville to his hometown of Macon, Ga. Next July, Aldean will become the first country artist to have concerts in the two most historic baseball stadiums in the country: Wrigley Field in Chicago and Fenway Park in Boston. No other artist has ever played at Wrigley Field. Millions of Aldean’s fans are thankful Broken Bow Records stepped in and prevented him from giving up, myself included.

Windows 8 was released last Friday, and many optimistic Windows 7 users (or just those in the market for a new PC) were looking forward to the changes Microsoft had in store. Even more enticing was the low price tag, which is only $40 for the upgrade – a very low price considering the cost of previous upgrades. But there’s a catch, of course – Windows 8 is nothing special for the PC. The new desktop does away with the start button and instead provides an overlay based on the Metro UI from its Zune software. The overall design looks very app-based because that’s mostly what it was designed for; Windows 8 is primarily for touch-screen desktops and tablets. That’s not to say it doesn’t work well on the desktop though; you can use

your mouse and keyboard just as well if you don’t have touchscreen hardware. One good thing Microsoft finally implemented is a form of integration between accounts. You can now sign up for a Microsoft account and use this account to log in to your computer (you may disable this feature if you
don’t like it). Once you’re signed in, you can tie all kinds of apps to that Microsoft account, including Facebook, Gmail, weather, etc. As a result, every time you log into your computer, you can automatically pull information from these apps without having to manually go to these sites in the browser and log in.
There were some other mild improvements. File transferring and the task manager got an update, and you now don’t have to buy third-party software to mount .iso files on your computer – Microsoft finally caved in and integrated their own. Another great feature they’ve added is multi-monitor support, so you don’t have to worry about using software like DisplayFusion to give the other monitors taskbars. Other than these few improvements, users may find themselves hindered by the Metro UI interface. If you’re looking for a new tablet, give it a go – but if you’re looking for a new operating system for your home computer, I’d say stick with what you have. Giants win second World Series in 3 years Josh Campbell Printz Writer Up 4-3 in the bottom of the 10th inning, Sergio Romo fired a fastball right over the heart of the plate that froze AL Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera. Disbelief was in Cabrera’s eyes as the umpire called strike three and the San Francisco Giants won their second World Series in the last three years. Until the World Series began, the Giants were forced to be inept to coming from behind. In the NLDS, they were down 2-0 in a five-game series to the Reds and came back to win. In the NLCS, they were down 3-1 in a seven-game series to the defending champion Cardinals and came back to win. Once it began, however, it was all Giants beginning in Game 1 with Pablo Sandoval’s historic night. Sandoval became only the fourth person in Major League Postseason history to hit three homeruns in one game. Only Reggie Jackson, Babe Ruth and Albert Pujols had accomplished that feat before which is exclusive company. The Giants went on to win Game 1 by a score of 8-3, but it was their pitching that carried them in Game 2 and Game 3 instead of towering homeruns. They were able to shutout a gaudy Detroit Tigers’ lineup in back-to-back games. The Tigers were only shutout twice during the duration of the entire season. It certainly helps your chances when you have four former AllStars, such as Matt Cain, Ryan Vogelsong, Barry Zito and Tim Lincecum. Not to mention that Lincecum has won two NLC Young awards, and he was coming out of the bullpen. Budding ace Madison Bumgarner delivered seven innings of shutout baseball while only allowing two hits as well in Game 2. As amazing as their pitching staff and Sandoval’s Game 1 performance were, Marco Scutaro was the most impressive player this postseason. During Game 2 of the NLCS, Matt Holliday slid straight in to Scutaro’s leg at second base, forcing Scutaro’s exit from the game. The slide was considered dirty by many, but that did not faze him, as he returned the next night. He went on to hit at a .500 clip in the NLCS and carried his hot bat over into the World Series. In the top of the 10th inning of Game 4, he delivered a soft liner into centerfield that dropped for a hit and plated Ryan Theriot from second base. This turned out to be the game-winning run of the series. Between Scutaro and shortstop
Brandon Crawford, the Giants were able to get timely double plays up the middle throughout the series, two of which came against the $214 million dollar slugger Prince Fielder. The Tigers decided to throw a whole lot of cash Fielder’s way this offseason after news of Victor Martinez’ injury. Fielder was brought in to protect Cabrera in the lineup and drive in runs which he failed to do in the World Series. From the day Fielder signed with the Tigers, the expectations for this team soared through the roof. Having Cabrera, Fielder and Delmon Young in the heart of their lineup, along with the best pitcher in the game, Justin Verlander, the Tigers seemed unbeatable. On paper, that is. They certainly seemed unbeatable as they routed the vaunted New York Yankees time and time again in the ALCS on the way to a sweep that nobody saw coming. Looking back at it now, it seems as though the Yankees just collapsed at the right time for the Tigers allowing them to advance to the World Series. While the Tigers certainly can mash with the best of them, they struggle to create runs on a nightly basis. The Giants were able to feast on creating runs throughout. They had timely hitting, good baserunning and possessed a disciplined approach at the plate which allowed them to sacrifice runs home on multiple occasions. Simply put, the Giants won because they played better fundamentally sound baseball night in and night out. This may be the beginning of a dynasty for the Giants. Having won two of the last three World Series and a great core of both young pitchers and cornerstone position players, it certainly seems feasible. Catcher Buster Posey is the best in the game at his position, and most likely will be this season’s NL MVP. Pair him with the likes of Hunter Pence, Brandon Belt, Scutaro and Sandoval, the Giants’ lineup will remain formidable to say the least. It may be a little early to label this team a dynasty, but they are certainly on their way.

Eagles look to end two streaks Saturday Ben Welch Printz Writer The Southern Miss Golden Eagles will enter Saturday’s contest against the Blazers of Alabama Birmingham hoping to end two streaks. The Eagles are currently in a winless season and are on an eight game losing streak. They also own a three game losing streak to the Blazers. A win would change a lot. “We don’t have anything on the table, from a trophy to a watch to a ring,” said Head Coach Ellis Johnson on Monday. “It’s all about playing for each other. And, to me, that’s more important than the rest of it.” This will be the second week in a row where the winner of this game will earn its first conference win of the season. UAB is coming off a 5545 loss at the hands of the Tulane Green Wave. The Blazers are 1-7 on the season with a 0-4 conference record. Their lone win came against Southeastern Louisiana. USM continued a disappointing season with a 44-17 loss to Rice last weekend. The Eagles find themselves 0-8 on the season, a drastic change from their 12-2 campaign last year.
Mary Alice Truitt/Printz
Head coach Ellis Johnson adjusts his headset during the homecoming game played aginst Marshall on Oct. 20, 2012. Arsenio Favor became the fourth different starting quarterback for Southern Miss when he suited up against Rice. The Eagles are the only team in the country to start four or more quarterbacks this season. In the Rice game, Favor threw for 180 yards and ran for another 65 yards and
a touchdown. Despite having the most success with downfield passing, Johnson said Favor might not be the guy this week. The team will reevaluate injuries to Chris Campbell and Anthony Alford and make a decision on the starting quarterback later this week.
On the defensive side, Southern Miss has allowed teams to score 38 or more points for the last four games. The defense will have to improve on that trend if the team has a chance to win since the Eagles are only averaging 19.2 points per game on offense. If an improvement is made, look for it
to be made by nose tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches. “When he [Nunez-Roches] talks there are people that listen,” said Defensive Coordinator Tommy West. “He’s a fiery, intense kind of guy. I think Nunez has done a nice job. I would follow him.” Roches and the Southern Miss defense will face another strong test this weekend. Head Coach Garrick McGee brought the passing game from Arkansas to Birmingham when he left the offensive coordinator position at Arkansas to accept the UAB job. Quarterback Austin Brown and wide receivers Jackie Williams and Nick Adams have the Blazer offensive attack rolling. UAB averages 323 passing yards per game and 99 yards a game on the ground. They score on an average of 30.1 points per game. Their weakness is on the defensive end where they allow over 38 points a game. In order for the Golden Eagles to put an end to both these losing streaks, someone will need to step up. The defense will need points from the offense, and the offense will need stops from the defense. Either way, someone will go home happy. Will it be the Eagles?
Basketball
Bright times ahead for N.O. Hornets Ben Welch Printz Writer Last year was a mess. The New Orleans Hornets lost their star in their second trade attempt, the first being blocked by the commissioner. The league owned the team and was in the process of selling it. A lock-out shortened the season to 66 games. And the Hornets put together a 21-45 record good enough for last place in the Western Conference. This year has the makings of a different story. The centerpiece of last year’s Chris Paul trade to the Clippers was guard Eric Gordon.
He played a total of nine games for the Hornets last year due to injury. Gordon is healthy for the start of the season, and Hornets fans should be able to see the main prize they received when they lost their star. Arguably the best part of the trade with the Clippers was the first round pick the Hornets received. The pick won the NBA Draft Lottery and allowed the Hornets to draft the National Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and 2012 national champion in college basketball, Kentucky center Anthony Davis. Davis highlights the list of new additions for New Orleans. Later
in this year’s draft, the Hornets selected 2012 ACC Freshman of the Year, Austin Rivers, and 2012 SEC Sixth Man of the Year, Darius Miller. Free agency and trades brought in guard Roger Mason, forward Ryan Anderson, and center Robin Lopez. Rivers is the son of Boston Celtics Head Coach Doc Rivers and led the Duke Blue Devils to the NCAA tournament last season. He was the number one ranked player coming out of high school for the 2011 recruiting class for most of the year until Davis passed him. Rivers suffered a sprained ankle during the preseason and could be limited to start the season but should be a
key player in the young core the Hornets have assembled. Every successful team needs role players to match their stars. Ryan Anderson and Robin Lopez are underrated moves that could turn out very high returns for the Hornets. Anderson is coming off a career year with the Orlando Magic and has the unique ability to shoot from distance while playing the power forward position. Anderson will spread the court and allow room for Davis to work his game in the paint. Lopez is the master of the dirty work in the post. He will rebound and guard other centers while saving Davis from taking the brunt of the beating. Davis has been called
undersized at this point in his career, and Lopez will take some hits off of him which will help the team and Davis in the long term. It will be a tough road for the Hornets this year. ESPN predicts the team finishing 13th out of 15 teams in the West. Realistically, it would be a long shot for this team to make the playoffs, but being competitive in every game is not too high of expectations and, with a couple breaks, it could be a special season in New Orleans. Either way, the future is bright for the Hornets and their fans.
