SGA pushes Eaglepalooza to spring Rachel Beech Printz Writer Since last year’s Eaglepalooza letdown with no-show headliner, Karmin, students have demanded answers about what this year’s event has in store. “SGA is here to serve the students,” Executive Director of Student Programming Tim Wells said. Wells said a few things are different about this year’s event, starting with the date. This year, Eaglepalooza will be hosted in the spring. “We want to try something fresh,” Wells said. “We’re just trying to better this event for students. It may not work out, but students’ voices have been heard and we’re taking a chance.”
Wells said moving the event to the spring would give SGA a chance to find more sponsorships to help fund it. “They’ve been working on sponsorships so we can make this year better than last year,” Wells said. Another difference in Eaglepalooza this year is the leadership. Wells said that instead of one main director for the event, a seven-person committee has been formed to lead the charge. “It’s a wide range of students,” Wells said. “The committee is composed of people who are on SMAC (Southern Miss Activities Council), people who have been involved with Eaglepalooza before and people involved in productions through radio companies.” “These students are working hard to put on a good show,”
Wells said. “With the 16,000 students at Southern Miss, you can’t please everybody and their music tastes. Southern Miss prides itself on being very diverse, and you can’t make everybody happy, but these students are here to serve.” Wells added that so far, SGA has gotten somewhere between $3,000 and $5,000 more in sponsorships than last year. The committee is currently working to find an artist to headline the event, and “quite a few artists who were suggested by the student body” are being looked into. The committee has also contacted a few different booking agencies, including Pretty Polly, who booked last year’s show. According to last year’s budget, SGA spent $33,000 on Pretty Polly, Melanie Fiona
and Karmin. The $26,000 leftover was for the stage, sound, lighting, local artists, vendors and advertisements from Clear Channel Radio. Southern Miss graduate Becca Morris, a booking manager for Winter Circle Productions in New Orleans, said there is no reason Eaglepalooza can’t book a good artist for the show. “With the budget SGA is given, there is no reason for us to be having D-list artists perform,” Morris said. “We need a mixture of genres and notable artists performing at Eaglepalooza. With last year’s budget, we shouldn’t have had a YouTube sensation performing.” Wells said the Eaglepalooza committee has been in touch with several different businesses to sponsor the event, including C-Spire Wireless, who also
sponsors Bulldog Bash at Mississippi State University. “We need all the sponsorship we can get to make the event even better,” Wells said. Wells said he was not aware of Eaglepalooza losing any sponsorships from last year. Many students say the barriers and frustrations that lie between SGA and the student body is the lack of communication. “I think one of the most important things to do would be to find out what the student body wants, as well as the surrounding community,” said senior Brett Campo of Pearl River County. Wells said he would be “more than happy” to serve the student body by hosting an open forum for students to suggest

After months of planning and discussion, Monday officially marked the beginning of the building of the perimeter fences around the University of Southern Mississippi campus. The Campus Fence and Landscape Project has been in the works for some time now, and Physical Plant Director Chris Crenshaw said he is excited for this project to get off the ground. According to Crenshaw, these

projects are defining projects for the Hattiesburg campus. “These projects will really shape the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus, and we are looking forward to seeing their completion.” The Hardy Street fence will start at the Jazz Lab and work its way up to the digital sign at the corner of U.S. 49 and Hardy Street near the Ogletree House. This portion of the fence is expected to be around seven feet tall and constructed of wrought iron and brick columns that match the Centennial Gateway entrance.

Parking Garage Available to Faculty, Staff and Students on Game Day Faculty, staff and students who have a valid Southern Miss parking decal now have an additional parking option on football game weekends-the parking garage at Golden Eagle Avenue and West 4th Street. On each home game weekend faculty, staff and students with parking decals will have first access to the garage as space allows. The Southern Miss vs. Boise State football game will be Saturday, Oct. 06; all vehicles parked in the Century Park and Payne Center lots must be moved no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 05, while all vehicles in other restricted areas must be moved by 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 05. Any vehicle not moved will be towed at the owner's expense. ITech updates campus Internet Chris Greene Webmaster On Monday, iTech revealed changes to the student wireless access on campus. A new and improved wireless network will allow students to connect to the Internet without having to continually go through a redirect and
log-in screen; however, a preliminary setup using the USM Help network is required. “We got a lot of feedback from students who said they were tired of having to continually log in every time they came to and from campus,” said Paul Brayfield, manager of the Project Management Office at iTech. “We basically wanted to simplify the process the student
goes through to connect to the wireless. Students can now log in using the USM Help connection and then never have to worry about logging in again.” To access the new network, find and connect to the ‘USM Help’ network. After connection, open a browser and wait for redirection. Follow the steps listed in the browser, and log-in using the
same CampusID and password as before. After the log-in, the wireless setup will complete, and the computer will be connected to the USM network instead. Additionally, all Wi-Fi enabled devices can also be configured to access this network. The USM connection will eventually allow access to staff and faculty as well as students, and iTech
plans to remove the USM Student network on Nov. 26. Connecting to the regular USM Student wireless connection also gives directions on how to set up a connection to the new network. the date of the beginning of the bricking project between the Liberal Arts Building and Joseph Greene Hall. “The construction in front of LAB and Joseph Greene has never affected me and my routes to class,” said Kiesha Everett, a junior business administration major from Petal. “I’m really excited to see how the bricked area will turn out. I
think it will really add to the beauty of campus.” The funding for these projects is coming from an 80-20 funding split with the Mississippi Department of Transportation. It is expected that the fence will cost around $550,000 and the bricking around $840,000. Both projects are expected to be completed in early 2013.

For this is the day Justin Bieber released his new hit song “As Long As You Love Me.” But no — the song alone wasn’t enough for Justin. He had to make these same women fall absolutely head over heels in love with him after the Aug. 1 release date of the awe-inspiring music video. The video features the rapping styles of Big Sean and the video gueststars Michael Madsen, from “Reser voir Dogs” a n d “Kill Bill.” This video really tugs at the heartstrings. The story places a love-struck
Bieber between a beautiful brunette girl and her not so loving father, played by Madsen. Much like the love story of Romeo and Juliet, Bieber and the brunette are forbidden from seeing each other by the rage-infused father, switching from sweet, kissing scenes between the two to arguments between the father and B i e b e r. only thing terrifying about this character. His attitude leaves little to be desired, as well. A feisty conversation that takes place within the beginning should hint towards trouble as the father warns the boy in a not so subtle way. “You need to get back in your car and leave and don’t come back ‘cause if you do, it’s not gonna be good for you.” Being the helpless romantic that he is, Justin ignores every warning that is delivered by the protective father. Within four minutes of the video, it quickly changes from sweet to violent as the father takes out his aggression on Bieber’s beautiful face (of course, in between the passionate kisses and passionate beatings- Bieber and his dance crew show off some of their dance moves. It’s only appropriate.) Just when you think he’s about to stay down, he defies the odds and rises up again to take some more painful strikes. The daughter finally intervenes and is dragged
away only to end the scene with Bieber and her together again. In the long run what is the over-all point of this video? Surely it can’t just be to emphasize Justin’s flawless skin and marvelous lips. No, that’s only a little part of it. Pay close attention to the words, “As Long As You Love Me,”meaning no matter the obstacle or the tiresome cruelty suffered upon by a significant other, if that love is there then that is all that matters. There are simply not enough words that can explain the emotional warfare brought on by this video. You’ll just have to watch it yourself. I’m just trying to get Justin to tell me that all he needs is my love, but alas, I can barely get my Chihuahua to pay attention to me.

Technology: A double-edged sword Chris Greene Webmaster
Last week, self-driving cars became legal in California. Along with this interesting new law came a multitude of opinions from both sides of the technological debate; the tech crowd who loves to see the progress of science and technology and the traditionalists who fear the direction technology is taking us. Now, don’t get me wrong – I can certainly see how some folks might be scared at the idea of a car driving itself. That lack of control, especially with other unpredictable drivers, makes the idea seem very dangerous, but overall I side with technol-
ogy here. Sure, the integration of normal cars and self-driving cars will be a bumpy one, but decades into the future when all cars can “talk” to each other (so to speak) and adjust their speeds accordingly, there will certainly be fewer wrecks, and this will more than make up for the fears people had when they were first introduced. It is interesting to see where people draw the lines in the advances of technology. For example, some say being chauffeured around the city is a luxury, but those same folks might be against self-driving cars. There are people who are devoted to their laptops and cell phones but can’t stand the idea of the Amazon Kindle replacing paper books. Another obsession in the 21st century is user interface. We want everything to be so simplified for us that we don’t even have to think to figure out how
to use it. We don’t care about a short learning curve; we don’t want a learning curve at all. While it would be silly for me to complain about my laptops and cell phones being “too intuitive,” I do feel as if these simplifications help destroy people’s curiosity. People just want the app to run; most don’t care how it runs or why it works. I miss the days when I saw people devoting hours towards tinkering with new things to figure out how they worked. Technology can definitely be a double-edged sword. Improving it makes our lives simpler in some regards, but it also replaces the jobs of many people and sometimes requires extra college education just to understand the complications of the machinery we’ve created thus far. It also doesn’t help that the profit made from replacing people with machines generally goes solely towards the pro-

gression of the company rather than the well-being of people, although I can’t offer a suitable solution. My future career, software engineering, is also in for an interesting ride; for years now, technology has been increasing at such an incredible rate that programmers have become lazy in their programming. Instead of working out all of the bugs and kinks that slow down the efficiency of their programs, programmers can now rely on the increasing speed of computers to mask their poor programming. The new mentality is now, “Why spend time coding my program to run faster if I can just buy a new computer that can run my programs faster?” I personally think it’s a dangerous mentality. I would say to those folks, “You’re promoting anti-intellectualism. You’re giving up problem-solving and selling inadequate software.” Maybe this time I’m the one sticking to traditional values. South City Records showcases student talent Caitlin Seale Printz Writer Did you know that the University of Southern Mississippi has a recording studio on campus? Not only that, but it has a fully functioning, student-operated record label that signs, promotes and develops artists to be able to take on the industry. South City Records was founded in 2005 by a former entertainment industry professor as a tool for students to get
hands-on experience to hone their craft before taking on this truly competitive market. Over the years, the label has grown and has signed several bands, including indie rock band Mississippi Shakedown and rock band Travelogue For Exiles. Currently, South City is working to release a compilation album featuring 10 bands that were chosen from a variety of demos submitted during the fall semester of the previous year. These bands will then compete via a point system that will ultimately get them
signed to South City and have an EP produced by the label. This year’s compilation album, “Sounds from the Burg,� will be released in November. Label president and senior entertainment industry major Robert Thronson thinks the label is a great way for students to get their hands dirty and gain valuable experience. “Having South City Records on the campus of Southern Miss is huge for everyone involved with music, the production of music and anyone who wants to be educated on the many career
paths the entertainment industry has to offer,� Thronson said. However, the label is not solely for entertainment industry majors. One can become a member of the label regardless of major. Thronson wants students to be aware that the label has an impact on the Hub City music scene. The label focuses on local artists, so the hope is that through this the music scene in Hattiesburg and the surrounding areas will grow and prosper. “Our Entertainment Industry program here at Southern Miss
is second to none in the country,� Thronson said. “Our advisers and faculty members here are top-notch in their field and make every effort possible for students to succeed in whatever their quest or goals are. South City Records is a direct product of that and allows for a handson experience you can not get just anywhere.� Those interested in getting involved with the label can attend South City Records meetings Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. in the gold conference room in the Student Activities Hub.

Mumford & Sons—‘Babel’ has true grit Rachel Beech Printz Writer Undertones of Mumford & Sons’ “Sigh no More� resound through my mind when I think about the past three years. There’s “White Blank Page,� the song that gave me courage to defeat writer’s block freshman year. Then, there were nights during sophomore year I’d stay up for hours with my first love while “Little Lion Man� played in the background between serious talks, play fights and petty arguments. It would have been heartbreaking if we knew “Hold On to What You Believe� would be the song I’d clench to after we parted ways. It is exciting to know that Mumford & Sons’ latest album “Babel� can now be
a part of my last year in college. “Sigh no More� had such an impact on my musical preference that it left me wondering if Mumford would ever be able to create a masterpiece nearly as magnificent and relatable as the first. Oftentimes, bands have a tough time outdoing the first album, but I’m pleased to say “Babel� is the identically wonderful birth child of ‘Sigh no More.� With foot stomping, finger picking and thick, melodious harmonizations, Mumford has managed to doubly radiate the musical ingenuity they gave us in “Sigh no More.� The first song opens with the group’s easily distinguishable acoustic strumming and transitions into thought provoking lyrics: “I cry Babel, Babel, look at me
now, the walls of my town, they come crumbling down.� This song sets the stage for the rest of the album’s spiritual vibe. After I listened a few times, I concluded that although the sound of “Babel� is eerily familiar to “Sigh no More,� the picture Mumford has painted is completely different. “Babel� isn’t a choppy album with 12 stories, but more of an English folk/hillbilly story about a tale of two lovers trying to survive a dying relationship. It took me awhile to conclude why Mumford blew up so fast in the first place, but after comparing the band to its onceindependent counterparts, it finally made sense. Mumford has an uncanny ability to make simplicity sound absolutely beautiful while incorporating

gut-wrenching, easily relatable lyrics nobody else would be able to come up with. “Babel� is an emotional roller coaster, painting a very visible image of what many encounter at least once in a relationship: “I will wait for you.� (I Will Wait) “You cut me down, so I hid alone, but little did I know that would not be the end.� (Holland Road) “But I will hold as long as you like, just promise me we’ll be all right.� (Ghosts That We Knew) “You may not trust the promises of the change I’ll show, but I’ll be yours if you’ll be mine.� (Lover of the Light) And finally, “We will run and scream. You will dance with me; they’ll fulfill our dreams, and we’ll be free. And we will be who we are. And they’ll heal our scars. Sadness will be far away.� (Not With Haste) Another reason why “Babel� is so addictive is because it is
a constant mood changer. Although there’s the central theme of love and loss, it’s nothing like listening to a senseless album with the same idea throughout. A large portion of the album is almost like an emotional purgatory, especially songs six through 12. I didn’t know what the outcome would be until the end, and the gritty closing of ‘Not With Haste’ ended perfectly and gave me exactly what I needed to end my interpretation of their story. If I were to rate the Sons’ latest album, I would certainly give it a 5/5. Even though Mumford & Sons took a while to master “Babel,� the outcome was worth the wait. “Babel� far exceeded my expectations and left me wondering what will happen next with this band.

Southern Miss lets first win slip away Ben Welch Printz Writer Quarterback Ricky Lloyd made the first start of his career against the nationally-ranked Louisville Cardinals on Saturday. On a day when rain fell from the sky in buckets, Lloyd tried to bring a little California sunshine to Hattiesburg. It was not to be, as Louisville sent the Golden Eagles to 0-4 for the first time since 1976 by a score of 21-17. Southern Miss did have a chance late in the game to pull the upset until a questionable call ended a late drive. Facing a fourth and five on the Louisville 25 yard line, the Golden Eagles rushed running back Desmond Johnson on a sweep to the right. Johnson pulled up and threw it back to Lloyd, who had slipped out the left side of the formation. The ball hung and fluttered in the rain before a Louisville defender helped knock it down, ending any chance of a comeback. “The reason we thought it was a good call is that they had played man coverage on us the last four pass situations,” said head football coach Ellis Johnson after the game.” Against man coverage, you have the chance for the one guy to be not covered to be the quarterback. It could
have been a big play for us if it could have been executed cleanly.” The Golden Eagles found themselves in that position due to a poor second half by the offense. The first four drives of the second half netted Southern Miss a total of 16 yards. Three of the drives ended in threeand-outs while the fourth ended with a missed field goal. The final drive covered 57 yards before the failed fourth down attempt. The Southern Miss defense did its best Nasty Bunch impersonation, holding the Cardinals to their lowest point total of the season. Louisville sophomore quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was held mostly in check and below his normal passing numbers. Bridgewater finished the game 9-13 passing for 85 yards with a touchdown and an interception, but most of his damage came on the opening drive. The Eagles’ defense has figured out how to cause turnovers. After zero turnovers in the first two games of the season, Southern Miss has forced three in the last two games. Senior defensive back Reggie Hunt got the Eagles on the board as he took his first career interception back 23 yards to the end zone. Senior Deron Wilson tried to put the game away late in the fourth
quarter when he recovered his first career fumble. Wilson’s fumble could have iced the game, but the offense lost 23 yards on the next three plays before punter Peter Boehme netted six yards on his punt attempt. It took the Cardinals six plays to travel the 22 yards they needed for the gamewinning touchdown. Junior running back Senorise Perry finished his day with that winning touchdown run, his second of the day. Perry led the Louisville rushing attack with 118 yards. Cardinal running back Jeremy Wright chipped in with 84 yards on the day to assist Perry. Both teams relied on their running game to carry their offenses. Louisville rushed 50 times while Southern Miss ran it a season high 48 times for a total of 224 yards. Desmond Johnson led the way for the Eagles with 99 yards on the ground. Southern Miss will face another nationally-ranked team next weekend when the Boise State Broncos come to Hattiesburg. “I saw us come together as a team tonight,” Lloyd said after the game. “It’s time to move forward as a team. We came together. That’s one good thing to take from tonight, and that’s what is going to
keep us moving forward.” “We can’t take this game back; we just have to get ready for the next game,” Deron Wilson said at the
post-game conference. “You can always turn it around. We haven’t hit conference play yet besides the East Carolina game.”
