This issue kicks off with our cover star Yungblud, who gets brutally honest about his fourth album Idols. It is a raw, rebellious love letter to rock music, self-reclamation and life in all its glorious chaos. It is loud, unapologetic and exactly the energy we are taking into a new term.
We also shine a spotlight on Dai Time, the 18-year-old journalist, creator and entrepreneur who has already worked with Netfl ix and Disney while balancing student life. Recognised by the White House, she is proof that ambition does not wait and her story is as inspiring as it is relatable.
From there, we turn up the volume with Big Special, the Brummie duo whose honesty, grit and sharp lyricism have pushed them from lockdown jams to headline shows. And if that is not enough energy, Sam Thompson is here to remind us why fun, friendship and a little chaos can take you further than you think, from reality TV to podcast arenas.
Freshers is all about fi nding your rhythm, whether that is in lectures, at a gig or somewhere in between. Inside, you will fi nd stories to inspire, laughs to keep you going and discounts to make student life that little bit easier.
Here is to fresh starts, unforgettable nights and a term full of stories worth telling.

None of these should go down the sink.

Think pouring fats, oils, and greases down the sink is no big deal?
They don’t just disappear. They solidify into greasy clumps that clog your pipes and can send smelly dirty water straight back into your kitchen. Grim.
Don’t let blockages be a problem in your place. Bin it. Don’t block it.

Have a concern about speeding in your area?
If speeding is an issue in your local area, you can report it to your local council through a process known as Community Concern Sites. Once a report is received it will be considered for a speed monitoring assessment. The results of that could mean that a Safety Camera Van attends in your area and carries out enforcement action.
Drink a little, risk a lot
Motorists are being reminded of the dangers of drink and drug driving. Locally, 130 people were killed or seriously injured in 2023 in collisions involving drivers/riders under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Last summer also saw more than 600 arrests for drink and drug driving. Consequences of being caught include losing your licence, letting your family and friends down, loss of independence, potentially losing your job and difficulty travelling to certain countries. You also risk killing or seriously injuring yourself, your mates or someone else.
Help bring dangerous drivers to justice
You could make our roads safer by sending in footage of dangerous drivers to West Yorkshire Police through Op Snap. The online submission form is accessed on their website and allows road users to upload video recordings of bad driving. The recordings are reviewed by the police to see if an offence has been committed and whether it will be possible to progress with action against the offender. Over the last year, 7,500 drivers were brought to justice thanks to clips sent in by the public.
Keep yourself safe

Turning it down by just 1°C can cut your heating costs by up to 10%.
Wear warm layers and use blankets instead of raising the heat.

Only heat rooms you use often. Set timers to avoid running the heating longer than needed (consider a smart thermostat).
Prevent heat loss with draught excluders, thermal curtains, and weatherproof strips. Insulating your home can boost efficiency.
Take shorter showers, use water-efficient showerheads, and wash clothes at lower temperatures. Run dishwashers and washing machines only when full.
Service your boiler regularly and bleed radiators to ensure even heating.
