ON THE COVER Dan Thornton’s Cattle Grazing near Denver, Colorado PHOTOGRAPH BY CHARLES BELDEN Credit -Charles J. Belden photographs reproduced with permission from the McCracken Research Library, Buffalo Bill Center of the West, Cody, Wyoming.

Dan Thornton—Champion Cattleman and Colorado’s 33rd Governor (1951–1955)—with his elite Hereford herd. Never trading his trademark Stetson, boots, or pipe for standard political attire, he used his authentic Western identity to aggressively promote the state. The cattle pictured here paved his path to the Capitol. After selling two champion bulls for a record $50,000 each in 1945, Thornton paraded them down the red carpet into Denver’s Luxury Brown Palace Hotel during the 1945 National Western Stock Show The iconic stunt launched his political stardom and birthed a beloved tradition that continues today. 6

Heeding the Call By Cheryl Kepes photos courtesy Weishaar family

Lynn Weishaar, entering his 60th year as an auctioneer and rancher, shares industry insights and career highlights. Lynn Weishaar’s fast-paced, high-energy, yet melodic auctioneering cadence rings unmistakable to cattle and horse buyers at sale barns from the West to the Midwest. Fine-tuned over 59 years in the business, Lynn’s auction chant echoes as strongly as it did fresh out of auctioneering school. Lynn’s son, Seth Weishaar, an accomplished auctioneer in his own right, likens his dad’s skill on the auction block to a masterful musician. “It's kind of like they say – there are a lot of guitar players, but there's just a handful that are different, that really stand out. It's kind of the same thing with him,” Seth Weishaar shared. “I think he's worked a little harder than everybody else. If you put more into it, you get more out of it. And I think he's put more into it than most.”

FINDING HIS CALLING The road to a career in auctioneering was paved quite clearly by others in the Weishaar family. At one point, as many as six Weishaars were making a living behind the 18

mic. But it was Lynn’s love for the business and his natural knack for auctioneering rhythm that forged his path. Throughout childhood, Lynn pretended to auction calves to his dog in the family barn. His first serious foray into auctioneering emerged by happenstance. While working odd jobs at Lemmon Livestock in Lemmon, S.D., the then 16-year-old

Lynn started to entertain his buddies with his auctioneering skills. “I was playing out back behind the auction block, and some of my friends were with me, and I started auctioneering to them. Bob Schnell was managing the sale barn. He came out and said, ‘Who did that?’ Everybody pointed at me, and he said, ‘I want to talk to you.’”

That encounter launched Lynn’s career. However, it wasn’t much of a glamorous start. “Of course, I started selling hogs there. Nobody wanted to do that because the dust, dirt, and everything stunk so bad, but I got that job for a while,” Lynn reminisced. That first gig would be one of countless in the years to come. Lynn graduated from Western College of Auctioneering in Billings, Mont. He furthered his education at North Dakota State University, where he competed on rodeo and livestock judging teams. The combination of auctioneering prowess and livestock knowledge set up Lynn for a lifetime of success.

RANCH LIFE AT HOME Lynn and his wife, Connie, both grew up immersed in ranch life – from the time they could fit in a saddle, they worked cattle on horseback. The two have been married for 58 years and have operated a commercial cattle operation in Reva, S.D., for decades. However, Lynn admits, it’s Connie who has handled most of the ranch work through the years while he has been on the road at sales. “A lot of times I would come home from sales, and there would be calves on the porch and in the bathtub, and Connie would be thawing them out. She did it all,” Lynn said. Lynn and Connie’s ranch is known for producing quality baldie calves sold routinely at Faith Livestock. The Weishaars run a black-based cowherd with Hereford bulls. Lynn’s dad, Art, raised Hereford cattle. Through the years, the Weishaars utilized some of the family’s Hereford genetics as well as purchased Hereford bulls from other breeders. The couple’s two adult children, Jodi and Seth, who now have families of their own, pitched in on the ranch during childhood. Everyone in the family rode horses almost THE STOCKMAN AG-EXTRA | Breeder's Showcase, Fall 2026

every day, utilizing them for work and competition. The Weishaars used horses to rope and transport calves for branding. Jodi and Seth both competed in rodeos and jackpots, scoring college scholarships in the sport.

LIFE BEHIND THE MIC From its origins, Lynn’s auctioneering career launched into high gear. The early days of selling hogs at Lemmon Livestock evolved into auctioning cattle at multiple sale barns. One sale led to another, and before Lynn could say ‘SOLD!,’ he was working sale barns, purebred cattle sales, and bull sales. While his journey in the livestock auction industry took off, another venture came his way. “A friend of mine, Doc Ford (Dr. Ron Ford), wanted to have a production horse sale, and he hired me, and that really took off my horse sale business,” Lynn explained. Lynn’s renown as a horse auctioneer grew to rival his popularity behind the auction block at cattle sales. His forward-thinking approach brought about a new era in horse sales.

20

Connie recalls how Lynn spearheaded some of the first major performance horse sales in the country. “He was innovative in how he put the horse sales together,” Connie Weishaar stated. At the performance horse sales, the horses would be shown in the morning and then sold in the afternoon. This gave buyers an opportunity to see the horse in action and study its movements. “They were better-grade, high-quality horses,” Connie added.

log prior to the auction. He takes his preparation seriously, making sure he’s ready to share all the information a buyer needs. “I basically highlight about every lot number, in some way, shape, or form. It's good to know what you're selling and what's popular,” Lynn stated.

Additionally, Lynn hired an announcer for the horse sales. “Back then a lot of the horse auctioneers didn't have announcers, and we became affiliated with announcer John Johnson, and he worked with me for quite a few years. It got to be quite a business,” Lynn said. Quite a business indeed. It wasn’t uncommon for Lynn to auction an average of 300 cattle and horse sales a year. During his tenure, he’s worked sales in two Canadian provinces, plus every state west of the Mississippi, except New Mexico and Washington. “So, I've been around a little,” he joked. Starting from his first sales to today, Lynn pores over each sale cata-

the business is the people he meets. He cherishes the friendships he’s developed through the years. Along with the countless memories and friendships, Lynn’s acquired awards for his work. Among his accolades is his induction into the Livestock Marketeers Honor Roll in 2014. Although he has many auctioneering achievements, Lynn points to his family as his biggest treasure. “If I've got any accomplishments that are really great, they would be my wife, Connie, and my son, Seth, and my daughter, Jodi. They are the biggest things I have ever accomplished,” Lynn shared.

SLOWING DOWN, LOOKING AHEAD As he approaches his 60th year in the business, Lynn has decided to ease up on the gas pedal at work. He looks to the future with hopefulness – confident the industry is in good hands. “It’s time for me to slow down. I am not a young person anymore. And I am accepting it well because some of the auctioneers that are stepping in, I helped start them. So, it is good,” Lynn said.

WATCHING THE INDUSTRY EVOLVE

sands of dollars,” Lynn said.

No doubt, Lynn’s seen many changes in the cattle and horse industries. The most exciting difference from his early years to now, he says, is the quality of livestock. He attributes the improvement to producers’ dedication to livestock management and genetic advancements.

Through the sharp advances in technology to the premium prices on the auction board, Lynn’s learned the art of being flexible.

He’s had the privilege of serving as auctioneer for some of the same sales for 40 to 50 years, covering as many as four generations of producers. Lynn has watched the ebb and flow of the market and witnessed price swings like few others. “I’ve sold them for little of nothing to hundreds and hundreds of thou-

“The big thing about auctioneers is it isn’t about how tough or smart we are; rather, it’s about adjusting and adapting to change. And that’s basically what we have done. Adapting to the situation is key, especially for us older guys,” Lynn said with a chuckle. Lynn thrives on the quick-paced and ever-changing nature of the sale arena. “He’s an adrenaline junkie,” Connie teased. Despite his passion for his craft, Lynn’s favorite part of

For more than 40 years, our family has used Limousin genetics to build a balanced, sound and powerful cow herd. With a focus on maternal traits, Lim-Flex bulls on our Limousin-influenced females have proven to be the perfect complement, producing cattle with the pounds and power that pay while maintaining easy-fleshing, good-keeping females. As both commercial cattlemen and seedstock producers, we are confident these genetics will work in the pasture and beyond. A Lasting

Influence By Cheryl Kepes photos courtesy Morgan Zeltman-Jones

Churchill Cattle Co.'s commitment to innovation and genetic excellence created one of the beef industry's most respected programs.

Underneath the vast Montana

sky filled with vivid, breathtaking sunsets, Churchill Cattle Co. grew its Hereford herd into an industry-leading cattle operation. Churchill’s World Class Dispersal and Final World Class Bull Sale grossed more than $13 million combined, making the events some of the largest and most successful Hereford sales in history.

Recognition of the Venhuizens’ contributions came with their induction into the American Hereford Association Hall of Fame in 2024. At its peak, Churchill Cattle Co. managed as many as 350 breeding females. As the Venhuizens settle into retirement after 45 years in the busi-

ness, the Stockman Ag-Extra asked them to reflect on their years of pursuing elite beef genetics and building meaningful relationships. Their journey from a few dozen head of Hereford cattle to genetics sought by cattle producers worldwide is marked by tough times, good fortune, and a progressive mindset.

Dale and Nancy Venhuizen built their influential Hereford operation in Manhattan, Mont., on pillars of perseverance, respect, and innovation. Their genetics have helped popularize the Hereford breed and improve the quality of the beef industry’s product.

44

Breeder's Showcase, Fall 2026 | THE STOCKMAN AG-EXTRA

A ROUGH GO Dale and Nancy met while attending Calvin College in Michigan. After getting married, the couple returned to Montana near the area where Dale grew up on a potato farm and Hereford ranch. The couple launched their cattle operation with some Hereford cows Dale had from his early years. In hindsight, choosing to get a cattle operation up and running during the early 1980s, amid high interest rates and a depressed agricultural economy, made it a rough go. “Our timing was not very good, because it seemed like we no more than got into the cattle business than a lot of things kind of turned south,” Dale Venhuizen recalled. Though starting the Hereford operation proved to be a struggle, Dale and Nancy held to the same guiding principle they adhered to throughout their career – they chose to focus on advancing their herd genetics and enhancing production. “We were always trying our best to improve our genetics, our cattle, and our ranch and the efficiency of it. We worked to determine how

we could get more production with the same number of inputs or less inputs. We really worked on that, and slowly things got better,” Dale explained. All the while, the Venhuizens concentrated on building THE STOCKMAN AG-EXTRA | Breeder's Showcase, Fall 2026

relationships with clients – treating each interaction with respect and intention. “We just tried to wake up every morning and do the best that we could on our ranch, with our cattle, and with people that we encountered throughout the day, whether it was a customer, a friend, or a neighbor, we tried to do our best each day at all those levels,” Dale shared. 45

MAKING HEADWAY As the years passed, the economy improved along with the agriculture sector, and Churchill Cattle Co. earned recognition across the industry. New technologies emerged, providing the Venhuizens with opportunities to make substantial genetic advancements. “We kept the same thoughts in mind – always trying to build a better Hereford cow and bull. We used all the available technology that made economic sense for us,” Dale said. “We really jumped into that, and that helped us gain momentum.”

46

While Dale and Nancy built their cattle business, they also started a family. They raised their four daughters on the ranch.

TAKING OFF Churchill Cattle Co. grew at a steady, controlled pace, expanding when finances allowed. By 2000, the cattle operation was rolling and getting noticed by producers in the industry. But it was a series of events at Churchill Cattle Co. that solidified the operation’s industry renown. “We had two really game-changing individuals born on our ranch

in 2010,” Dale said. “One was a bull and one was a heifer. They made a dynamic impact on our herd, the Hereford breed, and the industry as a whole.” The bull was Churchill’s Sensation 028X. He came along with the right traits at the right time. Churchill’s Sensation 028X proved to deliver calving ease and consistency. His sons hit home runs

for ranchers, spreading his progeny in the commercial cattle sector. GENEX promoted him and sold his semen nationwide, furthering the bull’s genetic influence among registered cattle operations. The transformative female produced by Churchill Cattle Co. in 2010 was Churchill Lady 002X. The Venhuizens utilized IVF to fast-track her progeny. Another genetic dynamo for the operation came with the purchase of the Hereford cow 7098 from Birdwell Ranch in Oklahoma. “This cow is amazing in production; she did all the things right as far as just being functional on a ranch and raising calves. She had incredible carcass traits, which was another THE STOCKMAN AG-EXTRA | Breeder's Showcase, Fall 2026

47

thing that's been really important to us, because we want our beef product that's used by the consumer to be as good as it possibly can be.” Additionally, during the same timeframe, Dale and Nancy made investments in elite Hereford herd sires. They worked to sell semen and build a large clientele.

UTILIZING TECHNOLOGY From his earliest days in the cattle industry, Dale appreciated the value of performance records. As technology progressed and provided more data points, Dale utilized the information to help guide genetic decisions. Another pivotal moment in the history of the operation came in 2015. Trans Ova Genetics approached the Venhuizens about setting up a satellite center at Churchill Cattle Co., primarily to host IVF flushing services. The partnership set in motion a new level of genetic advancement at Churchill Cattle Co. The Venhuizens started IVF flushing the best females in their program. They combined the latest technology with sound breeding decisions and trait selection. This was the final piece in the puzzle of their success. “What happens on the ranch in the real world, the things you see

48

Breeder's Showcase, Fall 2026 | THE STOCKMAN AG-EXTRA

every day as you're taking care of your livestock is super important, and I don't want to minimize that. But with this new technology, I just felt that we knew a lot more about our young cattle, our yearlings, our weaned calves, our 2-year-olds, than what we knew about them 40 years ago when we first started in this business,” Dale said.

“It's a great industry to be in right now, and I think that will continue,” Dale said. “I know we have cattle cycles, and I understand that, but we've never had beef demand like we have today. So that paints a very bright future for everyone.”

The future of the cattle industry remains bright due in part to the pioneering vision, dedication, and genetic contributions of Churchill Cattle Co. learn more churchillcattle.com

EMBRACING THE FUTURE The pastures at Churchill Cattle Co. will continue to be home to Hereford cattle. Colby and Brie Atchison of Four Diamond Livestock, who worked alongside the Venhuizens for seven years, are leasing the ranch and operating with select Churchill genetics. Though Dale and Nancy have decided it’s time for them to step out of the day-to-day operations, they remain two of the cattle industry’s strongest advocates. CALF STRESS AT WEANING

sucks.

“I haven’t had a sick calf in the last four years when we weaned ... They don’t get sick. Everything just works easier. When you go to ship, they look at your calves and go, ‘Damn, that’s a good looking bunch of calves’ ... When you calculate the benefit of the health of the cattle, the improved gain on the calves, it pays for the tub.”

Dave Anderson Belt, MT

THE RISK ON $2,500 CALVES

got you stressed?

Protect your investment with an all-natural 60-day starter program for incoming calves. The Turboboost program is laser-focused on immune activation to reduce treats, retreats, death loss and ultimately increase weight gain. Early data has shown gains as high as .32 lb to .5 lb increase in avg. daily gain across the 60 day program. With calves worth over $2,500 and the program costing around $38/head, can you afford to risk it? 30cc dose of Turboboost paste on arrival

“Been real happy with it. We’ve doctored a few, like I’m talking 4-5 head [10% decrease]. Lost none. The ones that doctored responded great, and they’ve gone right on [.32 lb daily increase]. None of them got doctored twice.”

“I did notice it seems like they acclimate to the feed better, and you don’t have as many swollen bellies. At 6 weeks in... they looked great. And they gained 2.1 lbs/day. Usually, we’re about 1.6 lbs.”

STOCKMAN

traight below The Weishaar family (l-r): Sern, Shaine, Seth, Nicole, and Slone

About the Weishaar family. This edition of Stockman Straight Up showcases a family that is causing the rodeo world to take notice. Seth and Nicole Weishaar’s children, Shaine (20), Sern (18), and Slone (17), have swept some of the rodeo industry’s most prestigious competitions. Sern, a two-time South Dakota state champion heeler, recently entered the pro rodeo circuit. He plans to attend Gillette College on a rodeo scholarship. In 2025, Slone was part of a roping duo that topped the BFI Junior Nationals Team Roping, earning a record-setting $50,000 payout. Shaine’s academic and rodeo success earned her a scholarship to Montana State University. She is pursuing a nursing degree and competing in barrel racing, breakaways, and team roping. The Weishaar children’s success is just beginning, and their name is quickly gaining recognition in the rodeo world. The Stockman Ag-Extra had the opportunity to visit with the Weishaars about the secret to their success. From Seth and Nicole to their three children, the family’s insight proves inspiring.

74

Breeder's Showcase, Fall 2026 | THE STOCKMAN AG-EXTRA

A conversation with everyday Stockmen,

The Weishaar Family Belle Fourche, S.D. What is the most challenging aspect of raising such competitive children?

From Se th and Nicole: What is the biggest blessing of being a rodeo family? The biggest blessing has been their health and getting to do it all as a family. Every time a trailer pulls up the driveway with healthy kids and horses – it’s a win.”

What do you think are the contributing factors to your kids unparalleled success? I think their character and faith has always been strong and with that came confidence and good relationships with their friends. They have always had a passion for rodeo so them wanting to do it has made it easy.”

The problem is never about learning to win, it’s about how to handle and rebounding from losing. Coaching your own kids can be interesting and more complicated by having three of them in the arena. They all respond differently to pressures and recognizing what each of them may need in certain circumstances has taken some trial and error on our part."

Slone and Sern

From Slone: How do you prepare mentally and physically the day of a competition?

What’s something people don’t realize about the amount of work it takes to compete at your level?

What habits or mindset do you think are the most important for success?

I try to prepare mentally by just staying out of my head and not overthinking my next run. My previous practice time makes me feel more confident.”

I think something people don't realize is how much failure it takes to get to some of the big wins. There are lots of misses, losses, and struggles but you have to keep trusting the work you've put in and believing in your own abilities.”

I think some of the most important habits to have are just being able to forget about the last run, good or bad, and move on to the next one knowing you're ready to compete.”

THE STOCKMAN AG-EXTRA | Breeder's Showcase, Fall 2026

75

STOCKMAN

traight From Shaine: What is your favorite aspect of competing at rodeos and jackpots? My favorite part is the community. There’s really nothing else like it, there’s no other sport or way of life that’s so firmly built on strong Christian values, genuine compassion, and people who are always willing to help each other. At the same time, there’s a high level of competition that everyone brings. It’s a lifestyle where you’re either all in or not in at all, and everyone around you shares that same commitment. That combination of support and competitiveness is what makes it so unique and meaningful to me.”

To what or who do you attribute you and your siblings competitive drive? I would attribute our competitive drive to both sides of my family. We were always raised with the mindset that hard work pays off, and that if you’re going to do something, you give it your full effort. I’ve always known that progress doesn’t

mean comfortable and switching your mindset from “I can’t” to “I’ll learn” is life changing. My dad especially has always instilled the idea of enjoying every step of the journey. He sees the good in every bad run, every success and everything in between. There’s no failing, just learning. That expectation and example from our family naturally pushed us to be driven and motivated in everything we do and having fun along the way.”

Shaine

How has rodeo and jackpot competitions prepared you for life outside of that arena? Rodeo and jackpot competitions have taught me the importance of teamwork, support, and strong communication. Even though it’s an individual sport, you rely heavily on the people around you, and you learn how to encourage others while also pushing yourself. Being in that environment has helped me build confidence, work well with different personalities, and communicate clearly under pressure, and those are skills that have carried over to every part of my life.” 76

Breeder's Showcase, Fall 2026 | THE STOCKMAN AG-EXTRA

A conversation with everyday Stockmen,

The Weishaar Family Belle Fourche, S.D.

Sern’s passion is roping, but he has had a successful high school basketball career playing for Belle Fourche where he was named Black Hills All-Conference.

Sern

Sern

From Sern: How do you build trust and teamwork with your horse? The only way to build trust with your horse, in my opinion, is to get a lot of reps together. Showing them the same thing and just putting time in.”

How do you handle pressure when you are competing at the highest level of competition?

What separates a good competitor from a great one in the arena?

For me, I feel that the more I practice and the more prepared I am the less nervous I am and I think that helps me compete trusting in the work I’ve done before I enter.”

There are so many of our peers that are great with a rope. What separates a good competitor from a great one is your horsemanship and your attitude.”
