Beijing hits Manila-Tokyo ‘illegal’ sea border talks
SINGAPORE – Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth struck a measured tone towards China at a major defense forum on Saturday, noting “rightful alarm” over Beijing’s military build-up but saying the United States sought a “stable equilibrium” in Asia.

Leni closes gap with VP Sara in Pulse Asia survey
By Charles Dantes
FORMER Vice President and Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo narrowed the gap with Vice President Sara Duterte in voter preference for the 2028 presidential elections, even as the latter remained the frontrunner according to a recent Pulse Asia survey.
The survey, commissioned by Stratbase and conducted from May 3 to 7, showed Duterte preferred by 51% of the respondents in a hypothetical presidential race, while former vice president Leni Robredo was the choice of 41% of the respondents.
The results placed the two contenders within a 10point margin, underscoring a competitive early landscape for the 2028 elections.

FORMER senator Antonio Trillanes
IV on Saturday said he is prepared to deliver a potentially “explosive” testimony during the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Trillanes is among the witnesses expected to be presented by the prosecution in the impeachment proceedings against Duterte.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Trillanes said his testimony

would build on statements he previously made during an April hearing of the House Committee on Justice.
“My testimony will be similar to what I’ve already said during the April hearing, but I will add to it and I think some of the details will shock our kababayan and help them make the decision that Sara should no longer stay as Vice President,” he said.
Trillanes previously told the House justice panel that Duterte and her husband, Manases Carpio, have joint bank accounts containing over P111 million as of April 2016. He claimed the funds in the back accounts were linked to transactions with alleged drug personalities.
This prompted Carpio to file a perjury complaint against the former senator, insisting that the

“When we look across the region today, there is rightful alarm regarding China’s historic military build-up and the expansion of its military activities in the region and beyond,” Hegseth said.
Washington does not seek “needless confrontation in the region”, but rather “a genuinely stable equilibrium (in Asia) that works for Americans as well as our allies,” he said.
That means “a favorable but durable balance of power in which no state, including China, can impose its hegemony and hold the security

THE city government of Manila is set to mode r nize 44 health centers to help reduce the influx of patients in hospitals, according to Mayor Francisco Moreno Domagoso.
During a meeting with barangay officials, Domagoso underscored the importance of bringing health services closer to residents. He said his administration is restoring health centers one by one, including those that had been closed.
He also highlighted the city’s Kaagapay Program, which provides medical assistance to residents facing serious illnesses and other health concerns.
The Kaagapay Program directly assists residents in need, particularly those requiring critical treatments, surgeries, and other costly medical procedures.
The initiative forms part of Domagoso’s Minimum Basic Needs (MBN) program, which is funded by taxpayers and covers high-cost procedures such as liver transplants and heart surgeries. Pot Chavez

NBI extradites rape suspect from Bahrain with Interpol
THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Saturday announced the extradition of a rape suspect through coordination with international law enforcement authorities and the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).
The NBI, through its International Operations Division, facilitated the extradition and arrest of the fugitive, who is wanted for two counts of rape. It also initiated the process for his inclusion in the Interpol Red Notice, which was published in January.
The Philippine Center for Transnational Crime later informed the bureau that the suspect had been arrested in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
After Bahrain’s judicial authorities approved the extradition request, an NBI escort team was dispatched last week to facilitate the fugitive’s transfer and return to the Philippines.
The suspect was subsequently turned over to the NBI detention facility at Building 14 of the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City. He is facing a warrant of arrest issued by a family court in Trece Martires City, Cavite.

Ombudsman cautious of ‘constitutional issue’
By Rex Espiritu
OMBUDSMAN Jesus
Crispin Remulla has raised concerns over the reported continued presence of suspended Senate Sergeant-atArms Mao Aplasca within Senate premises, questioning whether the preventive suspension order against him is being properly enforced and warning of a possible constitutional issue.
Speaking during DZRH’s Executive Session on Saturday, Remulla said he had already sent two letters to Senate President Alan Peter
Cayetano seeking clarification and compli -
ance regarding the status of suspended Aplasca.
“I have already sent two letters to Senate President Alan Cayetano about that. The first letter asked for compliance and what action had been taken,” Remulla said.
Remulla noted that despite the suspension order, Aplasca was reportedly still seen inside the Senate and had even granted media interviews, raising questions about whether the directive was being fully enforced.
“When I saw Aplasca still walking around and giving interviews inside the Senate, maybe the order is being disregarded by the Senate President,” he said.
The ombudsman described the matter as a potential constitutional issue and warned that authorities would pursue it if necessary.
“So we will confront this issue. It is a constitutional issue, and I don’t know if he wants it to be a staring contest, but we have to respect
Philippine inflation likely breached 7% again in May, says BSP
By Thony Rose Lesaca
PHILIPPINE inflation likely remained above 7% in May 2026, exceeding the government’s 2% to 4% target range due to high food costs and a weaker currency, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said Saturday.
The BSP expects headline inflation to settle between 7.1% and 7.9% in May. Upward price pressures from the rising costs of rice, vegetables, and meat drove the increase, it said.
The forecast follows an inflation surge to a three-year high of 7.2% in April, up from 4.1% in March. The acceleration brought average inflation in the first four months of the year to 3.9%. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy items, also rose to 3.9% in April.
The BSP said the depreciation of the local currency also weighed on consumer prices. The peso hovered above the 61-per-dollar level in May.
“The recent rollbacks in domes-
the law, we have to respect the Constitution,” Remulla said.
He emphasized that preventively suspended officials should no longer perform government functions or receive compensation from public funds.
“If you want to take care of him, use your private funds. He should be off the payroll now because he is preventively suspended. And if you want to give him work, make it private. Not in government,” he added.
Remulla also said that the Ombudsman has the authority to subpoena documents, including payroll records, to verify compliance.
“Yes, that is possible,” he said when asked if the Senate could be compelled to submit Aplasca’s payroll details. The Office of the Ombudsman ordered a six-month preventive suspension without pay against Aplasca pending investigation into a controversial shooting incident at the Senate on May 13.
tic fuel prices, lower fish prices, and slightly lower electricity rates might provide some relief,” the BSP said, highlighting factors that could moderate the final figure.
The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) previously attributed the sharp April increase to rising food and transport costs amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
The statistics agency will release the official May 2026 inflation data on June 5, 2026.TUPAD workers to help repair, clean classrooms nationwide

DOLE to deploy 240k beneficiaries of TUPAD program for public schools
THE Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is looking to deploy about 240,000 beneficiaries of the government’s TUPAD, or Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers, program to clean and repair classrooms in 5,000 schools nationwide starting Monday.
According to Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino, the deployment will be carried out in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) to support schools ahead of the opening of classes next month.
“The repair and renovation of classrooms will provide jobs for our countrymen nationwide,” he said in a radio interview on Saturday.
Among the tasks of the TUPAD beneficiaries will be painting, cleaning, repairing facilities, and other classroom maintenance work.
The program is also being implemented in coordination with parent-teacher associations.
Tolentino said the rollout will be conducted simultaneously nationwide, involving more than 200,000 classrooms.
He noted that TUPAD is being expanded from a disaster-response measure into a tool for boosting the local economy.
“The concept of TUPAD is that it can really help the local economy,” Tolentino said.
He said the program aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to assist displaced workers.

Lawmakers urge Senate to act on House-passed building code
A GROUP of Bicolano legislators on Saturday urged the Senate to act on a measure seeking to update the more than four-decade-old National Building Code.
Led by Reps. Luigi Villafuerte and Migz Villafuerte, the lawmakers pushed for the enactment of House Bill 6615 following the collapse of a ninestory building under construction in Angeles City that claimed at least five lives.
The legislators noted that the House approved the measure in December 2025 to reform the 49-year-old building code and make structures more resilient against earthquakes, fires, floods, landslides, storms, and volcanic eruptions.
HB 6615, which proposes a New Philippine Building Act, aims to strengthen infrastructure resilience, including preparations for the feared “Big One” earthquake that experts warn could heavily impact Metro Manila. Maricel V. Cruz

Meanwhile, the Philippines and New Zealand deepened defense cooperation by discussing the Status of Visiting Forces Agreement (SOVFA) during a meeting between their defense chiefs on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue.
Teodoro met with New Zealand Defense Minister Christopher Penk on Friday for an introductory call during the annual security forum organized by the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
According to the Department of National Defense, both officials discussed the SOVFA and recognized its role in enhancing defense cooperation and institutionalizing military engagements between the two countries.
The two sides also exchanged views on the participation of the New Zealand Defence Force in major military exercises such as Balikatan and Salaknib.
The defense officials emphasized the importance of these engagements in improving interoperability, military readiness, and regional cooperation amid evolving security challenges.
Both countries likewise expressed interest in exploring broader areas of defense collaboration.
Angeles creates fact-finding task force in fatal building collapse
By Rex Espiritu and Maricel Cruz
ANGELES City Mayor Carmelo Lazatin II has signed an executive order creating a fact-finding and investigation task force to conduct a comprehensive probe into the collapse of an under-construction building in Barangay Balibago.
Under Executive Order No. 026, Series of 2026, the Angeles City Fact-Finding and Investigation Task Force was formally established as part of the local government’s continuing response to the incident.
According to the city government, the task force is mandated to conduct a thorough, impartial, and comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances and contributing factors behind the collapse, in accordance with existing laws, regulations, and technical standards.
The body is composed of representatives from various local and national government offices, law enforcement agencies, and professional organizations specializing in engineering, architecture, structural assessment, occupational safety, and disaster management.
Mayor Lazatin said it is important to gather all relevant information regarding the incident to develop recommendations on public safety and help prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The city government also reiterated its commitment to assisting affected families, assuring continued support, intervention programs, and other forms of assistance for those impacted by the tragedy.
Meanwhile, local authorities said operations at Ground Zero remain ongoing. The city government emphasized that all activities are being carried out with professionalism, respect,
and adherence to established procedures.
The creation of the task force comes as local officials continue recovery efforts and seek to determine accountability and lessons that may be drawn from the building collapse.
Also on Saturday, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) warned the public against individuals falsely claiming to be beneficiaries of government assistance, stressing that those found misrepresenting themselves as disaster survivors will face criminal charges.
The warning came after the arrest of a man who allegedly pretended to be a survivor of the Angeles City building collapse to obtain food and financial assistance intended for affected families.
Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao of the DSWD’s Disaster Response Management Group said the agency is coordinating with law enforcement authorities and studying possible legal action should the allegations be proven.
“The DSWD strongly reminds the public that government assistance is intended for genuine victims and those in need. Anyone proven to have lied or pretended in order to receive aid will be held accountable under existing laws,” Dumlao said.
Based on an initial report from DSWD Field Office 3, the man claimed he was buying a drink at a nearby store when the building collapsed on May 24. Validation later showed he was neither a resident of the area nor connected to the construction site or any of the victims.
Habagat begins as Typhoon Domeng intensifies — PAGASA
By Ratziel San Juan
THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Saturday morning announced the onset of the Southwest Monsoon, or Habagat, over the Philippines ahead of the possible start of the rainy season.
According to the state weather bureau, the Southwest Monsoon is one of the precursors to the onset of the rainy season.
“As Habagat becomes the dominant weather system, occasional to frequent rains and thunderstorms are expected, particularly over the western sections of the country. These conditions may signal the possible onset of the rainy season in the coming days,” PAGASA said.
“However, there may be rain breaks that last a few days or weeks, known as monsoon breaks,” it added.
The agency said it will continue to monitor weather and climate conditions nationwide and advised the public and concerned agencies to take precautionary measures against the adverse effects of Habagat and other weather disturbances.
Meanwhile, PAGASA announced Saturday afternoon that Severe Tropical Storm Domeng (international name: Jangmi) had intensified into a typhoon.
In its 5 p.m. tropical cyclone bulletin, PAGASA said Domeng was located 815 kilometers east of northern Luzon and moving northwestward at 20 kilometers per hour.
The typhoon was packing maximum sustained winds of 120 kph and gusts of up to 150 kph.
Although no tropical cyclone wind signal has been raised, PAGASA said the possibility remains low but cannot be ruled out.
The agency added that the enhanced Southwest Monsoon and the outer circulation of Domeng will bring strong to gale-force gusts, particularly in coastal and upland areas exposed to winds.
Areas expected to experience these conditions on Sunday include most of the Visayas, Batanes, Cagayan, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, the Bicol Region, Zamboanga del Norte, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, Agusan del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Sarangani, Davao Occidental, and Davao Oriental.
PAGASA advised the public to continue monitoring official weather updates as Domeng moves through the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

US warns capable of resuming war with Iran as deal remains elusive
WASHINGTON – The United States warned on Saturday it was “more than capable” of resuming war with Iran after President Donald Trump said any peace deal must adhere to his red lines, including Tehran never being able to develop nuclear weapons.
The White House had signaled Trump was close to a decision on an initial deal after weeks of mixed signals in tenuous negotiations, though Tehran denied there was a final agreement on ending the Middle East conflict that has jolted the global economy.
US sources had told AFP the deal was waiting on Trump’s sign-off, but the president had made no decision after a two-hour meeting in the White House Situation Room on Friday in Washington.
Canadian poison seller pleads guilty to aiding suicides
THE Canadian man who sold poison to distressed people worldwide pleaded guilty to 14 counts of aiding suicide but avoided a murder trial, an outcome one victim’s father branded “a disgrace.”
Kenneth Law, a 60-year-old former chef, ran online forums that offered people advice on how to end their lives and made fatal substances available for purchase.
The details of Law’s operation have caused widespread outrage since his arrest in 2023.
The list of 41 countries where Law sent poison included Australia, China, France and Brazil. He sold 330 packages to people in the United Kingdom.
Canadian prosecutors had charged him with 14 counts of murder and 14 counts of aiding suicide.
Prosecutors on Friday told the court in Newmarket, north of Toronto, that they no longer believed they could secure murder convictions.
Law then stood in a semi-enclosed area reserved for defendants, flanked by his three lawyers, and said “I plead guilty” to aiding 14 suicides in Canada.
Jeshennia Bedoya-Lopez, who died in 2022 aged 18, was one of Law’s victims. Her father, Leonardo Bedoya, told reporters outside the court that he found her dead in her bedroom.
“She was my only daughter, my light, my life,” he said.
Three years after Law’s arrest, he called Friday’s outcome “a disgrace.”
“That man does not even face the victims. He always keeps his back turned,” Bedoya said in Spanish.
Despite pleading to a lesser offense, experts say Law could still receive a sentence of 10-20 years of imprisonment.
Sentencing will be determined at a separate hearing in September, when the court will hear victim impact statements. AFP
Hegseth said the United States sought “respectful” and “goodfaith” engagement with Beijing, adding: “I wish my counterpart was here at this conference, but I look forward to other options when we can cross paths.” China, for its part, expressed strong opposition to a decision by Japan and the Philippines to start maritime border negotiations, calling the talks “illegal” and claiming exclusive control
The findings suggested a more competitive race compared with earlier surveys that showed Duterte enjoying a wider lead, as Robredo continued to consolidate support in key regions, particularly in Luzon and the Visayas. Despite Duterte’s overall lead, the survey showed Robredo outperforming her rival in Balance Luzon, where she received 55% of support compared with the Vice President’s 33%. In the Visayas, Duterte held a slim advantage, 50% to Robredo’s 46%, while the two were virtually tied in the National Capital Region, where Duterte registered 48 percent and Robredo 46 percent. Duterte’s commanding strength remained in Mindanao, her political bailiwick, where she secured 91% support against Robredo’s 7%. Across socioeconomic classes,
Meanwhile, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, while attending a major Asia defense summit in Singapore, said on Saturday local time that Washington could restart the war if it wanted.
“Our ability to recommence if necessary is (that) we are more than capable, our stockpiles are more than suited for that, both there and around the globe because of how we balance exquisite and more plentiful munitions,” he said.
That echoed the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which posted on X that American forces “remain present and vigilant across the region.”
The efforts to strike a deal mediated by Pakistan, were thrown into question this week by US strikes on the southern Iranian port of Bandar Abbas countered by retaliatory fire from Iran.
Nevertheless, diplomacy continued, including in a parallel process to stop fighting in Lebanon - which Iran has insisted be included in any formal end to the war and where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Israeli forces had advanced further even as military delegations from both nations met at the Pentagon in Washington.
Trump’s priorities in any deal included Iran agreeing to never developing
nuclear weapons and the re-opening of the blockaded Strait of Hormuz maritime route, he said in a social media post in which he also announced the Situation Room meeting.
“President Trump will only make a deal that is good for America and satisfies his red lines,” a White House official told AFP after the meeting.
“Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon,” the official added.
Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei pushed back on Trump’s conditions, telling state media that the Islamic republic“said goodbye to the language of ‘must’ 47 years ago.”
Exchanges of messages were continuing, he added, but “no final agreement has been reached yet.”
In a phone call with the Emir of Qatar, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran was ready to achieve a “dignified framework” to end the war, according to state news agency IRNA.
In his post, Trump said Tehran would remove mines from the Strait of Hormuz and end its closure of the waterway with “no tolls,” while the US would lift its parallel blockade of Iranian ports.
The two countries would also coordinate on removing and destroying Iran’s enriched uranium, he said, adding that “no money will be exchanged, until further notice.”
Iran’s Fars news agency, however, cited sources as saying Tehran was demanding “the immediate release of $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets” before moving to the next phase of negotiations.
On the toll-free reopening of Hormuz, the sources said “no such clause appears in the text of the agreement,” while Trump’s comment on destroying Iran’s nuclear material “is fundamentally baseless.” AFP

Trump ‘in excellent health’ but should lose weight—doctor
WASHINGTON – US President
Donald Trump’s doctor said he was in “excellent health” but advised him to lose weight, according to a memo released Friday after the 79-year-old underwent a routine medical check.
“President Trump remains in excellent health, demonstrating strong cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, and overall physical function,” said Trump’s doctor, US Navy Captain Sean Barbabella.
“Preventative counseling was provided, including guidance on diet, recommendation to take a low-dose aspirin, increased physical activity, and continued weight loss.”

The three-page memo provides an overview of Trump’s physical examination and diagnostic testing conducted at Walter Reed

The two island nations announced on Thursday they would start formal talks “to delimit the maritime boundary” of an economic zone and continental shelf between them, as President Ferdinand Marcos met Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on a visit to Tokyo.
But Beijing again asserted it has an “exclusive economic zone and continental shelf” in the waters to the east of Taiwan.

Duterte led among respondents from Classes ABC, D, and E.
The survey also found only a small percentage of respondents supporting other potential candidates or remaining undecided, indicating that Duterte and Robredo currently dominate the public’s presidential preferences before the next national elections.
For the vice presidential race, Pulse Asia conducted two separate surveys involving Senators Erwin Tulfo, Robin Padilla and Bong Go. In the first poll, Tulfo led with 46% support nationwide, while Padilla trailed at 38%. Tulfo’s numbers were highest in Mindanao (60%) and NCR (54%).
Meanwhile, the second survey showed Tulfo competitive, this time against Go. Go registered 47% nationwide, with his strongest support in Mindanao (57%). Tulfo followed closely at 42 percent, leading in Balance Luzon (52 percent) and matching Go in Visayas (46 percent).

The Articles of Impeachment accuse Duterte, the first Philippine official to be impeached for a second time in a row, of graft, corruption, bribery and an alleged assassination threat against former ally President Ferdinand Marcos.

Acidre was reacting to the decision of the new Senate leadership to create the subcommittee, to be chaired by Senator Rodante Marcoleta, that would continue the chamber’s investigation into alleged irregularities in government flood control projects.
“Why are they insisting on doing this at this time? We know what and where the public’s attention is focused,” he said.
“The process is already at the Ombudsman, which is the proper forum…I’m not saying that we should escape accountability, but we allow the proper forum to take over the process of exacting accountability,” Acidre added.
The check-up was Trump’s third medical examination since returning to office last year and follows mounting speculation about health issues, including bruising on his hands and apparent sleepiness during meetings.
“Examination of the dorsal hands revealed ecchymosis (bruising), consistent with minor soft tissue irritation related to frequent handshaking in the setting of aspirin use for cardiovascular prevention,” the memo said regarding Trump’s bruised hands.
Trump for his part said the exam went “PERFECTLY” in a post on his Truth Social platform shortly after the appointment. AFP
Global oil prices fell again on Friday on investor optimism that the United States and Iran would reach a deal to extend their ceasefire – despite Washington and Tehran offering conflicting views on the state of negotiations.
Oil markets have been up and down this week as investors assess the chances of a breakthrough deal that could potentially resume shipping through the crucial Strait of Hormuz. Abad said while fuel prices remain elevated, they have eased to around P70 to P80 per liter from nearly P140 per liter recorded a few weeks after the Middle East conflict began in late February.
To help mitigate the impact of higher oil prices, Abad said the government has disbursed around P40 million worth of assistance to public utility vehicle drivers under the P10-per-liter Fuel Subsidy Program.

Plastic recovery initiative expands through retail partnership
NESTLÉ Philippines and Robinsons Supermarket are rolling out 10 reverse vending machines across select Metro Manila branches to strengthen plastic recovery and promote circular waste management.
In partnership with Restore Solutions PH and supported by Robinsons Malls, the initiative provides consumers with a technology-driven system for sachet collection and upcycling. Collected sachets will be converted into Restore Boards used to make furniture such as chairs and benches.
Representatives of Nestlé Philippines, Robinsons Supermarket, and Restore Solutions PH recently signed a memorandum of agreement for the deployment of Smart Eco-llection Bins, where consumers can deposit sachets in exchange for rewards.
“This starts the value chain of circularity with Nestlé as the manufacturer, Robinsons
Supermarket as the retailer, and Restore as the upcycler,” said Nestlé Philippines senior vice president and head of Corporate Affairs Jose Uy III, stressing that the project also encourages responsible waste management through a convenient and rewarding system.
The program forms part of Nestlé Philippines’ net-zero commitments. The company said it already collects and responsibly diverts the equivalent volume of plastic it places in the market and complied with extended producer responsibility requirements two years before the EPR Act took effect.
Nestlé is also working with the United Nations Development Programme and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources under the National Plastics Action Partnership to develop circular solutions for soft and flexible plastics.

Lionheart Farms turns coconut sap into world-class export
Award-winning
LIONHEART Farms Philippines Corp. is evolving from a coconut ingredient exporter into a global premium food and beverage brand, anchoring its growth strategy on award-winning products made from sustainably sourced coconut flower sap from Palawan.
The vertically integrated agribusiness, operating since 2016, began as a supplier of organic coconut ingredients for overseas private-label clients. It is now expanding its own consumer brands for high-value markets in the United States, East Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
“Our main market is actually the US,” said Lionheart Farms head of communications, Russell Fernandez. “Secondary markets are East Asia and Europe, and we’re expanding into Southeast Asia and the Middle East.”
“We are proud to be the retail partner of choice for this. As retailers, we play a pivotal role in advocating for waste management and driving the transition toward a truly circular economy,” said Robinson’s Retail Holdings, Inc. sustainability manager Paul Bayan. Paul Bayan, sustainability manager of Robinsons Retail Holdings Inc., said the partnership marks the first deployment of reverse vending machines in a major supermarket chain in the country.
The Smart Eco-llection Bins allow customers to deposit clean and dry sachets to earn Ecobin points and rewards through the Ecobin Portal, with additional points offered for Nestlé sachets.
The bins are currently available at Robinsons Supermarket branches in Robinsons Galleria, Robinsons Place Ermita, Robinsons Metroeast, and Robinsons Townville Regalado, with more locations planned.

Lionheart’s flagship beverage line, “The Power of SLOW,” recently won at the 2026 Katha Awards for Food of the Center for International Trade, Exposition and missions (CITEM), in the beverages category for its newest variants, SLOW Spicy Apple and SLOW Hot Lychee.
Both are mocktail-inspired sparkling drinks made from organic coconut flower sap, with no artificial flavors, preservatives, or added sugar. The recognition builds on the brand’s earlier win when SLOW Original was named Best Beverage at the 2024 Katha Awards for Food, strengthening its positioning as a functional Filipino beverage innovation for global markets.
The company is targeting the growing global demand for non-alcoholic and functional beverages, particularly among younger consumers.
“As we saw the trend in beverages, especially in the US, alcoholic drinks are seeing slower growth. Younger consumers are more into healthy and non-alcoholic mocktail-type drinks,” Fernandez said.
Lionheart currently offers four variants in the Philippine market and is preparing to roll out its award-winning flavors alongside a broader international expansion.
Filipino flavors
A planned US retail rollout was temporarily paused due to tariff-related uncertainty affecting Philippine exports.
Global brand
Lionheart operates more than 3,500 hectares of coconut plantations in Palawan and has planted over 500,000 coconut palms.
Rather than owning land outright, it works through partnerships and lease agreements with indigenous Palawan communities, supported by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
Fernandez said early skepticism from indigenous communities gradually eased as the model evolved into a shared livelihood system.
“They realized they were not going to be displaced from their lands,” he said. “Instead, they would continue tending their own land while becoming part of the business ecosystem.”
With back-to-back Katha Awards recognition for both The Power of SLOW and CÓCOES, Lionheart Farms is positioning Philippine coconut flower sap as the foundation of a global Filipino wellness and culinary brand. Othel V. Campos

“It affected how we strategize,” Fernandez said, adding that the company continues production while recalibrating timing for entry into the US market.
Despite the delay, Lionheart remains focused on positioning The Power of SLOW as a breakout Filipino beverage brand in the global wellness category.
The company is developing up to 24 beverage variants featuring Filipino ingredients such as mango, ube, guava, and other regional produce. However, scaling remains a key challenge as Lionheart works with suppliers that are not yet fully equipped for large-volume production.
“We want to stay religious to our all-natural positioning. But many suppliers are not yet ready to scale because we’re targeting millions of cans,” Fernandez said.
The company is also exploring coffee-based beverages and lightly alcoholic variants under the same brand.
Culinary division
Lionheart’s culinary division, CÓCOES, also earned recognition at the 2026 Katha Awards for Food, reinforcing the company’s dual strategy across beverages and kitchen products.
CÓCOES focuses on coconut-based alternatives designed for global kitchens, building on coconut flower sap as a core functional ingredient.
Its best-selling product, coconut aminos, serves as a soy sauce alternative targeting consumers with soy allergies and sodium-conscious diets. The product has gained traction among vegan and health-focused markets overseas.
The brand has also introduced a coconut flower sap-based crema balsamico, positioned as a first-of-its-kind innovation and used for marinades, glazes, and even desserts.

THE 2XU Speed Series shifts from city streets to mountain trails as it stages its Baguio leg on July 26 at Camp John Hay, with registration opening May 28.
Following a sold-out Manila debut, the country’s first multicity performance running circuit expands to higher ground under the theme “Bound to Nature,” offering races across distances from 2 kilometers to a 21-kilometer half marathon.
Set about 1,400 meters above sea level, the Baguio leg will test runners on rolling terrain lined with pine forests, trading flat urban routes for cooler conditions and more technical trails.
Registration is now open via www.oneofakindasia.com. For more details please check out : http:// ph.2xu.com
“Speed Series started in the city to prove that running can be fast, technical, and spectator-friendly,” a 2XU Philippines spokesperson said.
“In Baguio, we go ‘Bound to Nature.’ This is about reminding runners why we started — testing yourself against the mountain.”
Race categories include the 2km Speed Run, 5km, 10km, 21km half marathon, and a relay event, marking the first time the series offers longer-distance options.
“After Manila, the feedback was clear: runners want more distance, more terrain, more purpose,” said Christine Majadillas, chief experience officer of One of a Kind Asia and experience producer of the series. “Baguio gives us that space.”
Organizers said the mountain leg also supports efforts to promote sustainable sport and position Baguio as a year-round destination for training and wellness tourism, in partnership with Camp John Hay.
Participants will receive a 2XU race jersey along with perks from partner brands, with limited early bird slots available.
The series will conclude with its third leg in Boracay on Sept. 20.

Young gun Panopio carries flag for Filipinos in Europe
By Alona Cochon
ROME—Thousands of kilometers from home, Dalph Panopio is carving out his journey not just as a professional athlete, but as a symbol of Filipino pride in Europe.
Fresh off a gold medal campaign with Gilas Pilipinas in the Southeast Asian Games, the Rome-based guard continues to bridge two cultures—his Filipino roots and Italian upbringing—while making his mark in basketball’s global landscape.
That connection to home was on full display when Panopio recently paid a courtesy visit to Neal Imperial at the Philippine Embassy in Rome, underscoring the growing presence of Filipino athletes abroad.
Joined by his family, Panopio was welcomed as more than just a visiting athlete. He was recognized as part of a new generation of Filipinos thriving on the international stage while remaining grounded in their identity.
Imperial commended the young guard for his achievements, highlighting the importance of excellence and national pride among Filipinos overseas. For Panopio, the visit was equally meaningful.
He expressed gratitude to the ambassador and Randy Arquiza for their continued support of Filipino athletes, emphasizing how such recognition fuels his drive to represent the country wherever he plays.
Panopio’s journey has been shaped by both discipline and distance. A product of international exposure, he completed his studies at California State University, Bakersfield in 2024, balancing academics with his pursuit of basketball at a high level.
Now a rookie with Blackwater in the Philippine Basketball Association, he is navigating the transition to the pro ranks while carrying the

a visit to the Philippine
expectations of a rising talent.
But for now, the pace has slowed.
Panopio is back in Rome, spending time with family as he recovers from a hairline fracture in his right metacarpal sustained during a game against TNT. The injury does not require surgery, giving him a brief window to rest before returning to action.
“Ok naman po ako. Happy to be with my family before another conference starts in July,” he said.

HOKA Midnight Run Asia to stage races in six PH cities
HOKA Midnight Run Asia is set for its biggest season yet as the premier nighttime running series expands to six cities across the Philippines in 2026, bringing its unique fusion of running, music, and nightlife culture to more communities nationwide.
Presented by GOMO, the 2026 edition was officially unveiled during the media launch at Citadines Bay City where organizers announced an expanded calendar featuring stops in Davao, Manila, and Cebu, and adding legs in Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, and the culminating event in Clark.
Building on the success of last year’s races, HOKA Midnight Run Asia continues its rapid growth as one of the country’s most anticipated running events, transforming city streets into vibrant celebrations of movement, music, and community.
“HOKA Midnight Run Asia has always been about creating a unique
experience where running, energy, and community come together,” said RUNRIO president Rio de la Cruz. “As we continue to grow, our goal is to bring that experience to more cities and inspire more Filipinos to embrace an active lifestyle.” Manila remains the flagship stop of the series after attracting 18,000 participants in 2025, making it the largest race in the HOKA Midnight Run Asia calendar. Organizers expect an even bigger turnout this year as the event continues to gain momentum among both seasoned runners and first-timers. The 2026 season opens in Davao City on May 31 before heading to Manila on July 19, Cagayan de Oro on August 2, Cebu on October 11, Iloilo on October 25, and Clark on November 15. Known for combining
performance running with a festival atmosphere, HOKA Midnight Run Asia offers participants more than just a race. Each event features immersive lighting installations, live entertainment, music-driven race experiences, and community activities designed to celebrate movement beyond the finish line.
With six cities, thousands of runners, and an expanded nationwide footprint, HOKA Midnight Run Asia 2026 promises to deliver its most ambitious season yet — one that celebrates not only speed and endurance, but also the power of community, music, and shared experiences under the night

Beyond medals and milestones, Panopio remains grounded in a message he often shares with younger athletes—a reminder shaped by his own journey across borders.
“You guys have a dream, a sacrifice for a dream. Your family is there to support you, so go for that dream,” he said.
In a career still in its early chapters, Panopio’s story is already resonating far beyond the court—proof that Filipino pride knows no boundaries.
Facets golf tourney highlights unique format, charm of Caliraya
THE Facets Team Open Golf Tournament returns for its fifth leg on June 16 at Caliraya Springs Golf Club, offering a mix of competition and networking in a scenic setting.
The event, part of Facets-Models Events Management Services’ 20th anniversary, continues to draw players from various industries with its blend of golf and social engagement.
Unlike traditional tournaments, the Facets Open features “fun holes” with models stationed along the fairways and introduces special individual awards, adding a lifestyle element to the competition.
“Our mission has always been to connect people across industries and golf clubs,” organizer Nick Lacson said.
Set in the hills of Laguna, Caliraya Springs provides a challenging layout with elevation changes and views of Caliraya Lake, giving players both a strategic test and a relaxed atmosphere. Registration starts at 6:30 a.m., with tee-off at 7:30 a.m. The tournament will use the System 36 scoring format to allow golfers of varying skill levels to compete on equal footing.
Entry fees are P6,000 for non-members and P5,000 for members.
Part of the proceeds will support Project Smile, which assists street children, displaced families and the homeless. The event will also benefit the Philippine Diabetes Support (Diabetes Advocacy Society Inc.). A fellowship gathering and pool party at a nearby resort will follow the awarding ceremonies.

Racing marked its return to the F1 podium for the first time in 23 years as Oracle Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen secured third place at the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix, powered by Red Bull Ford Powertrains.
Qualifying saw Verstappen secure a sixthplace start, but the flying Dutchman soon moved up to fourth place within the first three laps as cars ahead committed to early tyre changes. An entertaining tussle between Verstappen and the Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton eventually saw Max confirm his spot on the third step of the podium.
A successful weekend for Verstappen, having also secured points with his seventh-place finish in the Sprint on Saturday, closely followed by Visa Cash App Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindbald in eighth place.
Verstappen’s teammate Isack Hadjar also enjoyed his best result of the season in Montreal, claiming fifth spot on the day after starting seventh on the grid.
While Visa Cash App Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson showed strong race management to secure a seventh-place finish, teammate Lindblad’s Sunday was brought to an unfortunate early end on the starting grid. Both cars for Oracle Red Bull Racing and Lawson securing their best results of the season is a tribute to the incredible work that the Red Bull Ford Powertrains team have done in this new era of engines and regulations.
For Mark Rushbrook, Global Director of Ford Racing, this was another milestone in the journey that started in 2022 with a phone call to Red Bull that triggered Ford’s return. ‘Seeing Max secure a first podium of the Red Bull Ford Powertrains era is a landmark moment for our partnership. It has been fantastic to witness the remarkable effort that has gone into the preparation for the 2026 season, and this result is a well-earned marker of the efforts of both Oracle Red Bull Racing and Ford Racing.
‘The progress we have seen across the board for all four cars across the Oracle Red Bull Racing and Visa Cash App Racing Bulls teams, powered by Red Bull Ford Powertrains both in the build up to and during the season has been special to witness. We cannot wait to see where the rest of the season takes us off the back of today’s milestone.’
The F1 season continues in just one week in Monaco as the teams will look to carry their Montreal momentum into round six of their respective campaigns.

MEnsuring Your Dog's Bone Health
First of two parts
AINTAINING your dog’s bone health is essential for their overall wellbeing, mobility, and quality of life. Strong bones support your dog’s structure, protect vital organs, and enable active movement. As dogs age or grow, their bones require proper care through nutrition, exercise, and preventive measures to avoid common bone-related problems such as fractures, arthritis, and deformities.
Nutrition for Strong Bones
According to the article "5 Ways to Strength en Your Dog's Bones" by PetMD, meeting your dog’s nutritional needs is the cornerstone of bone health. Key nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D play pivotal roles in bone formation and maintenance. Calcium is the primary mineral that builds bone density, while phosphorus works alongside calcium to form the mineral matrix of bones. Vitamin D facilitates cal cium absorption from the digestive tract, ensur ing these minerals are effectively utilized.
The article from My Pet Nutritionist titled "Nutrients for Bone and Joint Health in Pets" further emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet rich in these nu trients. It highlights that de ficiencies or imbalances can lead to weakened bones, making dogs more susceptible to fractures and skeletal deformities. Additionally, trace minerals like copper, zinc, manganese, and vitamins A and C contribute to healthy bone development and repair. These micronutrients support collagen synthesis and antioxidant protection, which are vital for maintaining bone matrix integrity.
PETS

explains that weightbearing activities stimulate bone growth and increase bone density. Regular walks, runs, and play sessions encourage mechanical stress on bones, which triggers remodeling and strengthening processes. However, exercise should be appropriate to your dog’s age, breed, and health status. Overexertion or high-impact activities in young puppies or senior dogs can cause injury or exacerbate existing bone conditions. PetMD also advises consulting your veterinarian to design an exercise plan that promotes bone health without risking damage.
Preventing Bone Problems Through Veterinary Care
Regular veterinary check-ups are vital for early detection and prevention of bone diseases. According to PetMD’s article, routine vet visits allow for monitoring growth in puppies and screening for conditions like osteoarthritis in older dogs. Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease, is the most common bone-related problem in dogs and can severely impact mobility and comfort.

Deep fried lasagna, anyone?
SICILIAN Roast is introducing Fried Lasagna this June, a new take on a house staple available all month across all four Metro Manila branches.
“Lasagna is already one of the dishes people come back for, so we wanted to do something with it they haven’t seen here before,” said Executive Chef Matt Navarro.
“Frying it gives you that crisp shell, but everything inside is still the same lasagna, the pasta, the cheese, the herbs. Nothing about it is lost,” he added.
The dish takes a classic lasagna and gives it a new texture. Layers of pasta, herbed ricotta, and mozzarella are set until firm, then hand-breaded and fried to order.
Each slice is finished with grated parmesan and fresh herbs and plated over a pool of marinara. The result is a golden, crisp crust that gives way to a soft, cheesy interior.
Frying changes how the dish eats without changing what it is. The bread-
ing crisps the outside and holds the layers together, while the inside stays soft and cheesy. The marinara underneath cuts through the richness and keeps it close to the lasagna people already know.

Queer musical favorite ‘Zsazsa Zaturnnah’ returns for 20th anniversary

SHOWBIZ
ZSAZSA Zaturnnah Ze Muzikal is set to return to the stage as the groundbreaking Filipino musical celebrates its 20th anniversary, with producers opening auditions for a new restaging next month.
Based on the graphic novel by Carlo Vergara, the musical premiered at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 2006 and went on to become Tanghalang Pilipino’s longest-running musical.
The production is recognized for combining camp, fantasy, satire, and queer storytelling. It tells the story of Ada, a shy gay beautician, who changes into the superheroine Zsazsa Zaturnnah after ingesting a mysterious stone. Her journey brings her face-to-face with alien queens, Amazonista warriors, romance, and personal discovery.
The upcoming restaging will be directed by Chris Martinez, with music, lyrics, and musical
MEI MEI brings Filipino-coded pop to OPM scene
By Angelica Villanueva
ANAME can say a lot about a musical group. For newly debuted OPM girl group MEI MEI, it points to something familiar, playful, and rooted in Filipino culture.
The eight-member act made its official debut recently, introducing members Alexa, Jhamayka Ada Aerise Thea Jessie Yuni and Dina under Groovy Garden Records, the new label under PULP Group.
During the launch, the group performed its debut single “Telebong,” premiered its music video, and gave the media a closer look at the concept behind its name and music.
“MEI MEI is very Filipino-coded,” Jhamayka said, explaining that the name was inspired by the local habit of repeating names and nicknames, such as Jan-Jan, Che-Che, and May-May.
“We wanted it to be instantly relatable, familiar and personal to Filipinos. When you hear MEI MEI, we want it to feel like home,“ she added.
direction by Vincent A. De Jesus
Open auditions will be held from June 7 to 9 at SIKAT Performance & Event Venue in Quezon City. Roles available include Ada, Dodong, Didi, Aling Britney, Queen Femina Suarestellar Baroux, the Amazonista warriors, and ensemble members. Organizers said performers of all body types, genders, and gender expressions are encouraged to audition.
Over the years, the musical has featured performers such as Eula Valdez, Agot Isidro , K Brosas , Joey Paras, Nar Cabico , and most recently Kim Molina during its 2023 revival at Areté. Its legacy has also extended beyond theater through a 2006 film adaptation directed by Joel Lamangan and an animated feature by Avid Liongoren, which premiered twice at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

The sense of familiarity runs through “Telebong,” a novelty-pop track that draws from Filipino dance music while adding a Gen Z spin.
PULP Group CEO Happee Sy-Go, who wrote the song specifically for the group, said she wanted to introduce the members through a sound that different generations could enjoy.
“My source of joy is classic Filipino novelty dancing. Every time I hear it, I feel light and happy. So that’s the route I wanted to go. I told the girls, ‘This was our music before,’ and they added their input to make it Gen Z,“ Sy-Go told Manila Standard Entertainment
The members said the song became a way to honor where they came from while introducing themselves as young Filipinas.
“It’s a tribute to where we came from. We want to give justice to the talents passed down to us by our ancestors. Hindi tayo basta Pinoy lang, Pilipino tayo,“ Jhamayka shared.

MEI MEI also leans on the members’ different personalities. The group introduced official personas, including Spark MEI MEI, Cool MEI MEI, Dolly MEI MEI, Sweet MEI MEI, Princess MEI MEI, Power MEI MEI, Groovy MEI MEI, and Diva MEI MEI.
“We don’t stick to one image or personality. We all have different personalities, and that is what makes us MEI MEI. It’s our individuality,“ Dina explained.
For the members, the debut also marks the result of months of training and adjustment, including living together and building what they described as sisterhood.
“We learned sisterhood through our training. Not only our skills grew, but also the bond that we have now,“ said Jessie, the group’s leader.
She added the group’s immediate goal is simple: to share their music and represent young Filipinas.
“We want to use this platform to share our individual stories. Baby steps, but in the future, we have this big dream to share our talent, music and Filipino pride internationally,“ she stated.
The group is also preparing its debut EP “HELLO PO,” with “Telebong” as its carrier single. More tracks, including “Filipina” and “Sinta,” were teased during the launch.

Four stories of queer love, identity open Pride Month viewing
By Jasper Valdez
FOR years, queer stories were often treated as niche viewing, but streaming has changed how quickly these titles can reach Filipino audiences, making LGBTQ+ stories more visible and accessible than ever before.
For those looking for something timely to stream, these recent releases offer different takes on queer lives, relationships, and identity.
“Soul Mate” Where to watch: Netflix

Netflix’s Japanese-Korean limited series follows Ryu, a man who leaves Japan for Berlin, where he meets Johan, a Korean boxer who changes the course of his life. Starring Hayato Isomura and Ok Taec-yeon, the drama traces their connection across several years and cities, including Berlin, Seoul, and Tokyo.

family who learns she is intersex. The discovery sends her into a personal search involving gender identity, love, and the expectations placed on her by the people around her.
“Mating Season” Where to watch: Netflix
From the team behind Big Mouth, Netflix’s adult animated comedy uses talking animals to explore dating, sex, breakups, and messy relationships. The humor is raunchy and not for younger viewers, but the show includes queer characters and relationship dynamics in its broad look at modern desire.

ACROSS the world, Pride is often seen in color, music, and celebration. But behind the marches and campaigns are lives shaped by quieter struggles, including the search for work, safety, stability, and a place where love does not come at a cost.
Diesel and Tinder are using their Pride 2026 collaboration to put attention on a practical issue facing LGBTQIA+ communities, which is economic security.
Through their “For Successful Loving” project, the two brands are jointly donating $200,000 to Outright International, with the

FOR many young LGBTQ+ people, Pride does not always begin in a parade, a public declaration or a rainbowcolored post. Sometimes, it starts in a group chat, a fandom space, a private message or a corner of the internet where they can speak without having to explain themselves first.
slogan into a broader statement about love, identity, and connection.

The campaign features American artist, model, and fashion designer Gigi Goode in documentary-style conversations with queer individuals, exploring desire, vulnerability, relationships, and the different ways people experience love.
The project also includes a 17-piece capsule collection spanning ready-towear, denim, underwear, and accessories. Its design language plays with Diesel’s familiar codes through sensual details, unisex pieces, and garments that use the body as part of the statement.
Quezon City Pride grows through community spaces
For LGBTQ+ youth, safe spaces can begin online

That quiet search for safety feels timely as Pride Month begins. A 2024 Philippines survey by The Trevor Project, done in collaboration with the Psychological Association of the Philippines LGBT Psychology Special Interest Group, looked into the mental health and experiences of Filipino LGBTQ+ young people ages 15 to 24. Its findings pointed to a familiar truth: young people are not placed at risk because of who they are, but often because of how they are treated, rejected or made to feel unsafe.
The report found that accepting communities, supportive relationships and access to LGBTQ+-affirming spaces were linked to better mental health outcomes among Filipino LGBTQ+ youth. For many young people, especially those still studying, living with family or figuring out how much of themselves they can share, the internet has become one of the first places where identity feels less lonely.
It can happen through a TikTok comment section, a Discord server, a gaming circle, a fan account, a campus organization page or a private chat with someone who simply
gets it. These spaces are not perfect, and they are not substitutes for support at home, in school or in the community. But for a young person who has not yet found the words to say “this is who I am,” they can offer company and relief.
Online spaces also allow young people to move at their own pace. They can read other people’s stories before telling their own. They can learn terms that help them understand themselves. They can see older LGBTQ+ people living ordinary, creative, successful or peaceful lives. They can also find allies who remind them that acceptance does not have to come with conditions.
A safe space can mean knowing which friend will not turn a confession into gossip. It can mean joining a school activity without being mocked. It can mean finding a community where pronouns, crushes, style, music taste or family worries are not treated as jokes. Still, the burden should not fall on young LGBTQ+ people to build safety for themselves. Online comfort can help, but it cannot replace the responsibility
of families, schools and communities to make everyday life less hostile. Acceptance should not be something a young person finds only after logging in. As Pride Month opens, the conversation can go beyond visibility. For young people, support is often measured in smaller ways— being listened to, being believed, being allowed to take up space and being given the chance to grow without fear.
For some, that support begins on a screen. The hope is that it does not have to stay there.

PRIDE Month in Quezon City is moving through spaces that many people pass through on ordinary days— malls, plazas, activity areas, restaurants, and performance venues.

This June, Araneta City is joining the city’s Pride calendar with “Free To Be HUE,” a month-long campaign that brings together art, fitness, wellness, business, education, and entertainment activities across the City of Firsts. The campaign, symbolized by a colorful pinwheel, highlights the different identities, stories, and experiences within the LGBTQIA+ community. It also reflects how Pride activities are no longer confined to a single march or stage program, but are becoming part of everyday public places where young people, families, workers, shoppers, and allies gather.
Araneta City will open the campaign on June 2 with the unveiling of the Free To Be HUE mural outside the New Frontier Theater along Gen. Roxas Avenue. Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte and members of LGBTQIA+ organizations are expected to join the ceremony and help paint the mural’s final touches.
The celebration will continue with the aRUNeta Run Club’s Pride Run on June 7 at the Green Gate of Smart Araneta Coliseum. Participants are encouraged to wear colors that represent them and bring Pride flags. The run will also include free HIV self-test kits and on-site screening services through a partnership with the Quezon City Health Department. Beyond the wellness and entertainment activities, the Pride calendar also creates opportunities for young LGBTQIA+ people to be seen, heard, and celebrated in spaces where they have not always felt welcome.

Araneta City will also hold a Safe Space Session on June 18 at Ali Mall for its lessees and staff, with resource speakers from the Quezon City

ILANDED in Cebu expecting the usual tropical summer fare: fresh mangoes, sticky rice, and maybe the occasional halo-halo. But as the humid air wrapped around me, I realized something was different this year.

Dee-tails Ardee de los Angeles
Everyone I asked, from Cebu friends to airport staff, kept telling me the same name: Plantation Bay. That’s when it hit me. The real summer sweet event in Cebu wasn’t happening at a food park or a mall. It was tucked inside a sprawling resort in Mactan.
So I went. And I discovered that Plantation Bay Resort & Spa, proudly celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2026 after opening in 1996, has quietly become the archipelago’s most exciting dessert destination.
The first stop on my sugar-fueled pilgrimage was the Kilimanjaro Kafé, a 24/7 haven for late-night cravings. Under the scorching summer sun, however, I needed something cold.
The resort famously claims to serve the “Best Ice Cream in the Philippines,” a bold statement that lets the flavor speak for itself. Sold exclusively on-site, this house-made dessert has achieved cult status. Their signature Ube Shake is the ultimate craving that hits the spot: thick, creamy, and a vibrant violet that tastes like pure Cebuano creativity. The resort has even integrated the Ube shake into its curated “Delicious Dozen,” a list of 12 signature dishes that define its culinary identity. But the

dessert event didn’t stop there.

One evening, I ordered the Flaming Alaska Resurrection, featuring their homemade ice creams, Ube in Palermo, and Jackfruit in Fiji, coated in thick meringue and flamed at your table. Watching the dessert set ablaze tableside was pure theater, a perfect marriage of heat and sweet. For something different, their cappuccino tiramisu is definitely a worldwide favorite. The chocolate cup looks good and tastes even better. What impressed me most during this 2026 visit was the resort’s ability to balance indulgence with wellness. The culinary team has introduced options sweetened with allulose, offering a lighter finish for healthconscious travelers without sacrificing texture. Whether you opt for the decadent Peanut Butter Chocolate scoop

or the dairy-free Pandan variety, every spoonful feels intentional. Made with coconut milk and sweetened with allulose and monk fruit, this 170g serving cuts about 250 calories. Deliciously dietfriendly, it’s vegan, keto, paleo, low-carb, and vegetarian.
Walking back to my room that evening, sugar-high and smiling, I realized I had been right. The summer sweet event in Cebu truly is at Plantation Bay. From the “Delicious Dozen” Ube shake to the flaming tropical goodness, the coolest place in the islands isn’t the pool, it’s the dessert table. My recent escape left me with memories and a craving that I won’t soon forget.
As I boarded my flight back to Manila, I found myself already planning a return trip. There were flavors I hadn’t tried, scoops I hadn’t sampled, and that Ube shake calling my name from thousands of feet below.
Plantation Bay didn’t just satisfy my sweet tooth this summer, it redefined what a dessert destination could be. If you find yourself in Cebu before the season ends, do yourself a favor: skip the beach for an afternoon, order something cold and flaming, and let the island’s sweetest secret wash over you. You’ll thank me later.
