DILG considers bounty for Bato; NBI to subpoena Mrs. Dela Rosa

THE Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said Friday it is considering offering a reward for the arrest of Senator Ronald

who has gone into hiding again to evade an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC). The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will also subpoena the senator’s wife, Nancy dela Rosa, and other individuals—including

Sandiganbayan orders Jinggoy, Bonoan arrest

Second Division yesterday issued an arrest warrant against Senator Jinggoy Estrada in relation to graft charges filed against him over the flood control mess.

Estrada immediately posted P90,000 bail Friday afternoon.

“I respect the rule of law and our judicial institutions, and this is precisely why I am posting bail and personally submitting myself to the jurisdiction of the Sandiganbayan,” the senator said in a statement.

“Posting bail is a legal remedy available to me under our justice system, and I intend to avail myself of every lawful means to defend myself and clear my name,” he added.

The Sandiganbayan Fifth Division is handling the separate non-bailable plunder case and another count of graft against Estrada.

"I am hoping for fair treatment, due process, and impartiality in the hearing of this case. I trust that in the end, justice and the truth will prevail," he said.

Estrada's co-respondent, former Department of Public Works and Highways secretary Manuel Bonoan, also posted bail yesterday.

SENATORS facing arrest or detention could still take part in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte through court-approved physical attendance at the Senate rather than online participation or remote voting, Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson said Friday.

Lacson, a member of the Senate minority, insisted that “work-from-jail is not allowed” and that physical presence remains indispensable in constitutional proceedings.

“One remedy is for the Impeachment Court to ask the Sandiganbayan or any court to which their cases would be assigned for leave of court,” Lacson said.

“If granted, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology or their custodians can escort them to the Senate so they may participate in the impeachment trial of the Vice President. The senator-judges will be physically present,” he added.

senators—believed to have been with the fugitive lawmaker before he slipped out of Senate protective custody earlier this month.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the government is considering placing a bounty on Dela Rosa. He did not specify how much the reward would be for capturing the lawmaker.

“We are considering that,” Remulla told reporters. “But apparently, it is not effective yet. We will see what needs to be done.”

The DILG chief urged Dela Rosa to surrender peacefully, while assuring the public that search operations continue and that the Philippine National Police (PNP) – which the senator once headed -- remains professional in carrying out its duties.

Dela Rosa is wanted by the ICC for alleged crimes against humanity linked to former president Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-drug campaign.

The warrant accuses the senator, who was PNP chief under Duterte, of “alleged criminal responsibility as an indirect co-perpetrator” in the killings of at least 32 persons between July 3, 2016 and the end of April 2018.

NBI Director Melvin Matibag said the bureau was preparing subpoenas for persons last seen with Dela Rosa before he left the Senate premises, three days after resurfacing following

Speaking to reporters following his State Visit to Japan, President Marcos, himself a former senator, said the longstanding practice in the Senate requires lawmakers to be physically present to cast their votes.

"I disagree with that," Mr. Marcos said when asked about the proposal.

"I understand that we had to do it in COVID because there was a health risk. But I do not see any particularly good reason for us to allow it now," he added.

The proposal, introduced by Senator Rodante Marcoleta, seeks to amend Rule 14, Section 41 of the Senate rules by adding a provision that would allow a senator, for "justifiable reasons," to attend and participate in sessions through teleconference, videoconference, or other reliable electronic means using information and communications technology.

The measure triggered heated debates in the Senate this week, prompting minority senators to stage a walkout in protest over what they described as an attempt to fast-track the rule change.

The president suggested the proposal appeared intended to accommo-

Estrada earlier cited a letter from the Senate Legislative Budget Research and Monitoring Office stating there is no record of any budget insertion attributed to him in the 2025 national budget.

The specific document completely refutes the corruption claims but was intentionally set aside by investigators, the senator said.

“We will issue subpoenas to the people who were last with him. Of course, we are also contemplating issuing a subpoena to his wife,” Matibag said in a press briefing.

He cited statements made by Mrs. Dela Rosa in online reports indicating that the events of May 13 became the opportunity for the senator to evade arrest.

“We are preparing it today (Friday),” Matibag said when asked when the subpoenas would be issued.

Matibag maintained that Dela Rosa remains “a fugitive from justice.”

“We are still doing our best to locate him and effect the arrest,” he added.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said investigators examined the sequence of events from Dela Rosa’s sudden appearance in the Senate until his departure from the premises at around 2:30 a.m. on May 14.

“The records of investigation have already been forwarded to the Department of Justice. They are the prosecutors; we produce the evidence,” Nartatez said.

He said the investigation also covered senators and other individuals who may have helped Dela Rosa evade arrest.

“Yes, all of them,” Nartatez said when asked whether senators were included in the investigation. “They know the consequences, especially if

date Senator Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa, who has been linked to discussions surrounding possible action by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

“It seems to only be applicable to Senator Bato, to enable him to cast his vote while in hiding, " Mr. Marcos noted.

The President explained that someone facing legal action and subject to arrest warrants should not be allowed to vote remotely unless physically present in the Senate.

"Now, for someone who is actually a fugitive from justice, being hunted by the police and the Interpol, and with a warrant of arrest from the ICC, I believe he should not vote, unless he shows up at the Senate,” the President said.

Mr. Marcos pointed out that remote voting was permitted during the pandemic because of health and safety concerns, but added those conditions no longer exist.

"So, it has been the long-standing tradition of the Senate that if you are not physically present on the floor when a vote is taken, that you cannot in fact, vote," Mr. Marcos said.

During a coffee forum with the media in Tokyo, President Marcos said he was “horrified” by the current state of the Senate, comparing it unfavorably with the institution during his time as a senator.

truth. As you can see, there is already a conflict right away. According to the Ombudsman, there is a mastermind. Senator Lacson says there is no mastermind," he said.

Meanwhile, minority leader Senator Vicente ‘Tito’ Sotto III raised concerns about the establishment of the Senate Blue Ribbon sub-committee.

Sotto contended that the subcommittee's formation lacks legality, emphasizing that it should have been executed in a plenary session.

retary Jonvic Remulla said Estrada may either surrender or face arrest over the plunder and graft charges filed against him by the Office of the Ombudsman.

Remulla said Estrada raised concerns about his medical condition, particularly his need for knee replacement surgery.

Nartatez said authorities had submitted additional records and documents gathered during the continuing investigation to the DOJ.

The PNP-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group has since filed an obstruction of justice complaint before the DOJ against Padilla and several others in connection with Dela Rosa’s escape.

Justice spokesperson Polo Martinez confirmed the DOJ received the complaint Thursday afternoon.

“As with any complaint filed before the Department, the same will be evaluated in accordance with established procedures and applicable rules,” Martinez said.

“If the evidence warrants, the matter will be docketed for the conduct of a thorough preliminary investigation to determine whether prima facie evidence exists to charge the respondents in court,” he added.

Prosecutor General Richard Fadullon also confirmed the filing of the complaint.

The Senate was thrown into turmoil on May 11 when Dela Rosa, who had been in hiding since November 2025, resurfaced to cast a crucial 13th vote that propelled Senator Alan Peter Cayetano to the Senate presidency ahead of the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

After reappearing, Dela Rosa sought refuge inside the Senate,

“Linawin po natin (let’s be clear): there is no such thing as ‘functional control’ over the budget process,” Atienza said.

She stressed that accountability must be based on evidence and actual actions, not assumptions tied to a public official’s title.

“It must be based on what a person actually did, not what people assume his title allowed him to do,” she said.

Atienza called for fairness and restraint in public discussions surrounding the issue.

“We therefore call for sobriety, fairness, and fidelity to the rules. Sweeping public pronouncements that point to Rep. Romualdez as the grand architect of a collegial and multi-faceted process involving the Executive, the House, and the Senate do not help the search for truth,” she said.

“They only reinforce our concern that public narratives are being allowed to run ahead of evidence,” she added.

Atienza said Romualdez remains prepared to address all allegations through proper legal channels.

Tensions escalated on May 13 after the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms allegedly fired shots at NBI personnel in a nearby building despite assurances that Dela Rosa would not be arrested while inside Senate premises. Hours later, Dela Rosa was seen leaving the Senate with Senator Robin Padilla. Padilla later acknowledged that Dela Rosa boarded his vehicle as he headed home but denied helping the senator escape.

Padilla, meanwhile, defended Dela Rosa’s continued participation in Senate work and urged the chamber to allow the senator to perform his duties remotely while evading arrest.

“He does not want to be absent. It is very different when you do not want to show up because you will be put on a plane, brought to a foreign country, and jailed,” Padilla said.

“Whichever senator it may be, as long as there is no final conviction, it means that person is not yet a criminal, which is why he should fulfill his mandate because the Filipinos voted for him,” he added.

Padilla also argued that technology should be used to allow Dela Rosa to continue serving in the Senate despite his absence from the chamber.

(The national budget is not made by one person. It is not controlled by a single office, much less dictated by the House Speaker.)

She explained that executive agencies submit their budget proposals, which the Executive consolidates into the NEP before transmitting it to Congress.

Atienza said the House of Representatives reviews the proposal through hearings and plenary deliberations, while the Senate conducts its own review and prepares its own version.

If differences arise between the House and Senate versions, these are resolved through the Bicameral Conference Committee and, in some instances, a smaller bicameral panel before the final measure is sent to the President for approval or line-item veto, she added.

Lacson stressed that existing Senate rules allow online participation only during force majeure situations or national emergencies.

A debate on this issue, introduced by majority Senator Rodante Marcoleta, led to a walkout of minority senators, including Lacson, from the plenary session on Tuesday (May 26).

“Work-from-jail is not allowed,” he said. “We cannot allow online participation because that is reserved for force majeure and national emergencies.”

The veteran lawmaker said the impeachment process requires the Senate to convene as an impeachment court under the Constitution, making physical attendance essential.

“The impeachment trial involves the Senate convening as an Impeachment Court, a tribunal tasked under the Constitution to try and decide impeachment cases,” Lacson said. His remarks came as Senator Ronald

“Bato” dela Rosa – a fellow former Philippine National Police chief -- remains in hiding following the issuance of an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court in connection with the Duterte administration’s anti-drug campaign (see related story on A1 –Editors).

Lacson also warned that online participation could expose fugitive senators to arrest.

“If dela Rosa wants to participate and uses his mobile device or laptop, he inadvertently helps law enforcement in tracking him down,” said Lacson, who also went into hiding for over a year following allegations on his role in the Dacer-Corbito double murder case in 2010.

“If law enforcers see his IP address, they have a good chance of getting him,” he added.

Lacson noted that other senators also face possible legal challenges, including potential plunder and graft charges linked to the flood control controversy and allegations involving campaign donations.

Meanwhile, Lacson and the Justice Reform Initiative (JRI) rejected proposals to allow detained or fugitive senator-judges to participate remotely in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, slated to begin July 6.

The JRI, an umbrella organization of business groups, foreign chambers, and civil society organizations, also urged the Senate to suspend any move toward allowing virtual participation in proceedings until the constitutional and institutional implications are fully reviewed.

House trial spokesperson and Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong, who will be one of the prosecutors against Duterte, likewise said physical presence of senator-judges during the impeachment trial is “indispensable.”

The Initiative said Senate rules on attendance, quorum, deliberation, and voting are “structural requirements” that ensure lawful and transparent decision-making.

JRI warned that extending virtual participation to quorum formation, debates, and voting could undermine the validity and credibility of Senate actions.

“Technology alone cannot be assumed to preserve the legal standards embedded in legislative procedure,” the group said.

Women CEOS call on senators to do their job

THE Filipina CEO Circle called on Senators to uphold integrity, independence, and fidelity to the Constitution as they carry out their legislative and constitutional duties amid the country’s mounting economic, social, and governance challenges.

In a statement, the group said Filipinos expect national leaders to focus on key concerns such as job creation, improved public services, stronger institutions, and policies that advance the country’s long-

term interests.

“The Senate occupies a vital role in our democracy. Its actions and decisions shape public confidence not only in government, but also in the strength and credibility of our institutions,” the organization said.

The group emphasized that the Senate’s responsibilities require principled leadership, respect for due process, accountability, and the ability to place national interest above political considerations. Composed of women leaders from

various sectors of business and society, the Filipina CEO Circle said public trust is built on competence, fairness, and adherence to responsibility.

The organization urged Senators to uphold the dignity of their office and demonstrate leadership that strengthens public trust and supports national progress.

“The challenges facing our nation require institutions that command respect, leaders who are accountable, and governance that puts the Filipino people first,” the group said.

DENR-CAR said through continuous monitoring, proper nutrition, medical treatment, and rehabilitation efforts, the raptor regained its strength and was later declared fit for release into its natural habitat.

Yuma-a was released alongside eight other rehabilitated wild birds, including one Philippine Hawk-Eagle, five Philippine Scops Owls, one Scale-feathered Malkoha, and one Rufous-bellied Eagle.

Much like Yuma-a, the birds were rescued after being found injured, weak, displaced, or vulnerable due to habitat disturbance and other human-related threats. Dexter See

DSWD beefs up rehabilitation care centers for minors

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development has strengthened its rehabilitation and restorative justice interventions for children in conflict with the law (CICL) following recent reports of serious crimes involving minors.

The interventions are implemented through the Regional Rehabilitation Center for the Youth (RRCY), which caters to minors whose sentences have been suspended by trial courts.

The RRCY is part of the broader network of Centers and Residential Care Facilities (CRCFs), which currently operates 77 centers nationwide, according to Center Development Office Director Kaye Sacapaño.

“Cases involving CICL are courtordered and covered by suspended sentences under the law because minors are not penalized in the same way as adults. Instead of penalizing them, they are provided rehabilitation through a restorative justice approach,” she said in a mix of English and Filipino.

Sacapaño said a specialized team composed of social workers, psychologists, and psychometricians handles these cases through individual assessments and counseling sessions.

She noted that many centers are not yet supported by specific legislation, unlike the RRCY, prompting the DSWD’s Center Development Office to push for the institutionalization and expansion of these facilities to address the increasing number of clients.

In 2025, the DSWD served a total of 1,940 clients across its various residential and center-based facilities.

Repositories of cultural heritage

(First of two parts)

HOW often have we heard that preserving regional languages is vital because they are repositories of indigenous knowledge, cultural heritage, and local identity?

Scholars have said when a language dies, a community’s folklore, oral history, and ecological wisdom are lost with it and therefore protecting them prevents cultural homogenization and fosters better cognitive development in children through mother-tongue education.

This is clearly a major issue in multiethnic Philippines, which is incredibly linguistically diverse. According to the Summer Institute of Linguistics/Ethnologue, there are roughly 182 to 183 living indigenous languages in the country.

But rapid urbanization, migration, and the dominance of Filipino and English have left over 30 of these languages endangered or in trouble.

Then we heard, rather loud and clear, from east of the International Date Line, that the world’s indigenous languages are under threat of disappearing, with one language dying every two weeks and many more at risk.

To address the question on how to maintain the roughly 6,000 indigenous languages, officials from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs organized an expert group meeting on indigenous languages 10 years ago.

Officials referred to the newly adopted Sustainable Development Agenda which aimed to leave no one behind, emphasizing that it is also critical to not leave any language behind.

The revitalization of indigenous languages is essential for ensuring the continuation and transmission of culture, customs and history, but it is also important to address biodiversity loss and climate change.

Officials and linguistic experts have said “Saving indigenous languages is crucial to ensure the protection of the cultural identity and dignity of indigenous peoples and safeguard their traditional heritage.”.

Many scholars argue that indigenous and regional languages separately represent the way of thinking of a people, and preserving them arguably means the “preservation of invaluable wisdom, traditional knowledge and expressions of art and beauty.”

In the Philippins, while there are more than 100 regional languages, the De-

partment of Education Mother TongueBased Multilingual Education program formally recognizes and utilizes 19 regional languages in its curriculum. These are Tagalog, the basis for the national language, widely spoken in Luzon; Sinugbuanong Binisaya (Cebuano), the most widely spoken language in the Visayas and Mindanao; Iloko (Ilokano), the lingua franca of the Ilocos Region and widespread across Northern Luzon;

—“—

Language scholars say digitizing regional languages drastically increases youth appreciation

Hiligaynon (Ilonggo), the primary language of Western Visayas; Bikol, spoken throughout the Bicol Region in Southern Luzon; Waray, the dominant language of the islands of Samar and northern Leyte; Kapampangan, predominantly spoken in Pampanga and southern Tarlac; Pangasinan, centered in western Pangasinan, Ilokano being widely spoken in the eastern side; Chavacano, a Spanishbased creole primarily spoken in Zamboanga City and parts of Basilan, Cavite, and Cotabato; Bahasa Sug (Tausug), widely spoken in the Sulu archipelago and various parts of Mindanao.; Maguindanaoan and Maranao, spoken predominantly by the Maguindanao and Maranao peoples in the Bangsamoro region.

Others recognized for education are Ybanag, Ivatan, Sambal, Aklanon, Kinaray-a, Yakan, and Sinurigaonon.

One may ask, if there is a guarantee that preserving the regional languages would be appreciated by the now generation.

Language scholars, or at least some of them, say there is no absolute guarantee, but digitizing regional languages drastically increases youth appreciation.

The same scholars argue that technology shifts the narrative from “fading tradition” to “modern digital identity” and the youth naturally engage with their mother tongue when it is accessible on the mobiles and platforms they already use daily.

Bato’s unclean hands at the Supreme Court

DURING a special en banc session on May 20, 2026, the Supreme Court of the Philippines voted 9-5-1 to deny the application for a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) filed by Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa.

The senator sought a court order preventing government agencies from arresting him based on any ICC warrant, INTERPOL Red Notice, or foreign judicial process unless a Philippine court first issued its own warrant.

Associate Justice Samuel Gaerlan served as ponente of the majority resolution.

Nine justices voted to deny the TRO, five voted to grant it, and one was on leave. Although temporary relief was denied, the ruling does not constitute a final decision on the main petition, and the substantive legal issues may still be resolved in future proceedings.

The majority who voted to deny dela Rosa’s plea were Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo, Senior Associate Justice Marvic M.V.F. Leonen, and Associate Justices Alfredo Benjamin S. Caguioa, Rodil V. Zalameda, Samuel H. Gaerlan, Jhosep Y. Lopez, Jose Midas P. Marquez, Maria Filomena D. Singh, and Raul B. Villanueva.

Those who voted to grant the TRO were Associate Justices Ramon Paul L. Hernando, Amy C. Lazaro-Javier, Henri Jean Paul B. Inting, Ricardo R. Rosario, and Antonio T. Kho Jr.

Chief Justice Gesmundo said the senator failed to establish a clear legal right, an actual violation, or the threat of irreparable injury necessary for extraordinary judicial relief. He emphasized that grant-

ing a TRO would be improper while core legal issues regarding the enforceability of an ICC warrant remain unresolved.

Senior Associate Justice Leonen separately warned that granting relief would effectively provide temporary immunity from arrest and prematurely decide issues reserved for the main case.

The Supreme Court also found no actual invasion of dela Rosa’s rights, concluding that his claimed threat was ‘more imagined than real’

His opinion reflected reluctance to use provisional remedies to shield a public official from potential accountability before the legal questions are fully resolved.

Based on the tone of his concurrence and his past jurisprudence emphasizing human rights and accountability, Leonen may ultimately be inclined to uphold some form of Philippine cooperation with ICC processes when the Court rules on the merits, although the exact scope remains uncertain.

Among the strongest concurring opinions came from Associate Justice Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa.

MANY Filipinos, angered and not at all entertained by recent political optics and theatrics while they obediently pay their taxes, will have their steely stare on how criminal charges of plunder and graft will be implemented by authorities.

From where we are, officials should go beyond sound bites and press statements as if they are following protocols endorsed by jurisprudence.

If criminal charges are filed, and if warrants of arrest for non-bailable crimes are issued, authorities should no longer open their mouths before cameras and rolling video tape recorders, asking those who have been criminally charged to surrender or be arrested.

What an oversimplified and shallow quote for a news break headline, seen by detached political observers as manipulating the audience’s emotions and hopefully scoring quick political points rather than making a meaningful move to implement the law.

The cases at bar are those of Senator Jinggoy Estrada, charged with a new set of cases of plunder and two counts of graft over his alleged involvement in the flood control corruption scandal and former Department of Public Works and Highways

secretary Manuel Bonoan – the criminal charges filed with the antigraft court Sandiganbayan on May 28.

—“—

Enough of the optics and the theater by headline seekers.

Let’s just follow the jurisprudence

The charges stem from an alleged multi-million-peso flood control kickback scheme, outlining an intricate mechanism involving illegal budgetary insertions and project allocations in the DPWH infrastructure portfolio.

The Ombudsman has alleged that accumulated kickbacks and illicit payouts amounting to over P573 million were systematically delivered to Estrada in exchange for allocating

hundreds of millions to specific infrastructure projects.

Along with Estrada and Bonoan, several other former DPWH engineers were named as respondents in the complaints. We note that the Ombudsman has recommended no bail for the accused and requested that warrants of arrest and hold departure orders be issued against them.

Why then should some officials open their mouths and ask those charged with non-bailable crimes to surrender or be arrested – even when no warrant, at least at that point, has been issued by the court?

Estrada said his camp will exhaust all legal remedies after claiming the Ombudsman filed the cases barely a week after the DOJ issued its resolution, allegedly without conducting a separate and thorough fact-finding investigation despite its earlier commitment to an “independent review and resolution on the merits of the case.”

He said his lawyers are preparing the necessary legal steps to raise alleged irregularities in the process, including evidence he said was not given sufficient weight and consideration.

Enough of the optics and the theater by headline seekers. Let’s just follow the jurisprudence.

Bluesky accounts hijacked in pro-Russia propaganda campaign

WASHINGTON, DC – A Russian influence campaign hijacked hundreds of Bluesky accounts -- many belonging to influential Americans -- to spread propaganda, researchers said, in a striking disinformation tactic that weaponized authentic identities rather than relying on fake accounts.

The campaign, which the researchers at Clemson University linked to the Moscow-based firm Social Design Agency, targeted journalists, academics, and filmmakers on the tech platform.

Many of the compromised accounts were used to post anti-Ukraine narratives, illustrating how pro-Kremlin propagandists are seeking novel ways to undermine support for the war-torn country that Russia invaded in 2022.

“Looks like someone got into my account and posted some story about France and Ukraine,” Wall Street Journal reporter Alex Ward wrote on Bluesky.

The post in question has now been deleted and Ward said he had regained control of his account.

A database of compromised accounts -- created by an internet monitor tracking Russian influence operations and shared with AFP by a Clemson University researcher -- included at least one other Wall Street Journal reporter.

“Bluesky account got compromised and banned and then I got the account back somehow,” Jake Tucker, editorial director at the PC Gaming Show, wrote on the platform.

Other compromised accounts included filmmaker Mary Beth McAndrews and academic Ben Gilbert.

“We have certainly seen bad actors use hacked accounts and stolen accounts in the past. Frequently, in fact. This seems more targeted,” Clemson University’s Darren Linvill told AFP.

with mass murder.”

He further cautioned that the Court “should strongly guard against being used as a politically convenient doormat” by those “charged with blood on their hands.”

Caguioa concluded that the case would define whether power could continue to outrun justice.

Associate Justice Maria Filomena D. Singh issued an equally pointed concurrence invoking the equitable doctrine of clean hands.

Singh noted that dela Rosa allegedly went into hiding for months, resurfaced only to vote in the Senate leadership election, and disappeared again.

She wrote that the senator’s actions suggested bad faith because he engaged with legal processes only when convenient.

The Court ruled that dela Rosa failed

“I’ve personally never seen Russia use hacked accounts at this scale before.”

‘No ethical constraints’

It was unclear how many accounts had been hacked, with Bluesky removing many of the propaganda posts or suspending affected accounts until their owners stepped forward to regain control.

Linvill said he had personally tracked at least “a couple of hundred accounts the Russians hacked,” but the real number was likely far higher.

Bluesky said it has removed 4,907 accounts linked to “state-backed influence activity” this year, roughly double the pace seen last year.

—“—

It was unclear how many accounts had been hacked, with Bluesky removing many of the propaganda posts

“Compromising real accounts to spread propaganda is a tactic these actors have used elsewhere for years, but this is the first time we’ve seen them attempt it on Bluesky,” the platform’s safety team wrote in a post.

“The accounts accessed were mostly older and dormant, though some active accounts were affected too.”

“To be clear, Bluesky’s systems were not breached. Individual user accounts were compromised, likely via credentials leaked in data breaches.”

Clemson University attributed SDA’s

to establish a “right in esse,” meaning a clear and existing legal right requiring immediate protection. The rights he invoked depended on unresolved legal questions, including whether ICC warrants remain enforceable after the Philippines withdrew from the Rome Statute.

Because injunctions cannot protect contingent or future rights, the Court found no basis for a TRO and similarly rejected the Status Quo Ante Order (SQAO) for having the same practical effect.

The Supreme Court also found no actual invasion of dela Rosa’s rights, concluding that his claimed threat was “more imagined than real.”

It noted that he remained under the protective custody of the Senate and failed to prove irreparable injury without judicial intervention.

campaign to a Kremlin influence operation known among researchers as Matryoshka (Russian doll), which has been known for disinformation campaigns based on impersonation.

“It has stolen the logos of media outlets, government agencies, and private companies and used AI to clone the voices of celebrities, policemen, academics, journalists, and others,” Joseph Bodnar, a senior research manager at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, told AFP.

“Hacking into accounts to post content using someone else’s identity is a logical next step for an operation that appears to have a lot of resources and no ethical constraints,” Bodnar added.

‘Sophistication isn’t impact’

The SDA has been sanctioned by the United States, European Union and the United Kingdom for information warfare campaigns.

“The SDA has been tasked and funded by the Kremlin to deliver a series of interference operations designed to undermine democracy and weaken support for Ukraine,” Britain’s Foreign Office said earlier this month.

The statement came after Britain unveiled new sanctions targeting 49 individuals working for the SDA, including writers, translators and video makers responsible for “deceptive Kremlin propaganda.”

However, the reach of the Bluesky hacking campaign appeared to be limited, with the platform’s safety team saying their “posts averaged 50 views” before they were taken down.

“Sophistication isn’t impact,” Bodnar said.

“Matryoshka’s impact is driven more by public perception than by its ability to persuade audiences online. It’s a perception hack.” AFP

When the Court eventually rules on the merits, the central issue will likely be whether the Philippines remains bound by ICC processes despite its 2019 withdrawal from the Rome Statute. The concurring opinions of Caguioa, Leonen, and Singh suggest that part of the Court is unwilling to shield the petitioner from international accountability, while the five dissenters indicate that a vigorous Constitutional debate over sovereignty and ICC cooperation remains ahead. This development is significant because it raises questions about the relationship between Philippine law, international legal processes, and government authority.

The ruling highlights the judiciary’s role in balancing individual rights, national sovereignty, and legal obligations while ensuring disputes are resolved through proper legal proceedings.

China leaders skip Asia meet headlined by US

SINGAPORE – Pentagon chief Pete He-

gseth is the headline speaker at Asia’s premier defence summit opening Friday, but China’s top officials aren’t expected despite weighty questions like Taiwan and the war in Iran.

Beijing’s defense minister is to skip the three-day Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore for the second year running, which analysts viewed as a sign of China’s rising power.

Yet, the forum that brings together top officials from around 45 nations has historically provided a setting for debate as well as quiet and high-profile diplomacy.

Defense Minister Dong Jun’s absence means no meeting there with Hegseth as China warns the US over its involvement with Taiwan and Washington seeks an end to the Mideast war.

The Middle East was the source of 57 percent of China’s direct seaborne crude imports in 2025 -- 5.9 million barrels per day (mbd) -- maritime tracking firm Kpler said.

Hegseth’s second trip to the Shangri-La Dialogue comes after US President Donald Trump’s visit to China in May, and his subsequent suggestion that US arms sales to Taiwan could be used as a bargaining chip with Beijing.

Hegseth’s speech on Saturday is expected to be “quite strong against China, but mainly for internal (US) consumption”, said Oh Ei Sun, senior fellow at the Singapore Institute of International Affairs.

“I think under Trump anything is negotiable and even with enemies deals can be done... (even) with Taiwan as a negotiating chip,” Oh told AFP.

Trump said “fantastic” trade deals were struck after his visit to China, although details were vague and no breakthrough with Beijing emerged in the war with Iran. AFP

Russian drone hit draws EU outrage

GALATI, Romania – A Russian drone struck an apartment building in NATO-member Romania early Friday, wounding two people in the latest spillover from the war in Ukraine and prompting strong condemnation from the Atlantic alliance and the European Union.

Romania summoned the Russian ambassador and President Nicusor Dan convened a national defence council meeting to discuss “the most serious incident to have affected our national territory” since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

The drone smashed into the apartment building in the city of Galati, close to the border with Ukraine, sparking a fire and sending a 14-year-old boy and a 53-year-

old woman to hospital with serious injuries, officials said.

Drone incursions in Romania have been detected dozens of times since the start of the Russian offensive against Ukraine in 2022, but the strike marked the first time a residential building has been hit.

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said Russia’s “war of aggression had crossed

yet another line” with the strike. “We stand in full solidarity with Romania and its people,” she said on social media, pledging to increase deterrence on the EU’s Eastern border and “to keep increasing pressure on Russia”.

NATO condemned Moscow’s “recklessness” and vowed “absolute solidarity” with Romania, while France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot slammed what he called “an irresponsible act”.

“Russia’s reckless behaviour is a danger to us all,” NATO chief Mark Rutte wrote on social media after a call with the Romanian president.

“I affirmed that NATO stands ready to defend every inch of Allied territory,” Rutte said Maia Sandu, the president of Moldo-

va, which lies between Romania and Ukraine and has also seen repeated drone incursions and debris falling on its soil, said Russia was a “danger to all.”

“During the night of May 28-29, the Russian Federation resumed drone attacks on civilian and infrastructure targets in Ukraine, near the river border with Romania,” the Romanian defence ministry said.

“One of these drones entered Romanian airspace, was tracked by radar as far as the southern part of the city of Galati, and crashed onto the roof of an apartment building, with the impact triggering a fire,” it said.

Two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled after the drones were detected in Romanian airspace, the defence ministry said. AFP

list on sexual violence in conflicts

UNITED NATIONS, New York – Israeli and Russian security forces have been added to a United Nations blacklist on sexual violence in conflict, according to a report reviewed Thursday (Friday, Manila time) by AFP.

Published annually by the UN, the list includes dozens of state and non-state groups credibly suspected of having engaged “systematically” in sexual violence in countries such as Sudan, Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, Syria and Mali.

Last August, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned Israel and Russia of their possible inclusion on the list.

Despite the warning, the report says that “incidents and patterns of sexual violence continued to be documented by the United Nations” in the war in Ukraine and in the occupied Palestinian territories.

UN investigators faced “continued denial of access” from authorities in both countries, according to the report, seen by AFP before its circulation among Security Council members. Regarding Israel, “in 2025, patterns of sexual

violence against Palestinians detained in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory continued to be documented,” the report says.

It notes that the cases verified by the UN are indicative of multi-year trends but are not “comprehensive” given the denial of access to Israeli detention centers.

Consequently, in 2025, the UN confirmed multiple cases dating back to 2023 of sexual violence, “including as a form of torture,” against 14 men, seven women, nine boys, and one girl in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

These violations include rape with an object, gang rape, physical violence against the genitals, forced nudity, and body searches conducted “without apparent security justification.”

The perpetrators are identified by the UN as members of the Israeli military, security forces, and prison services. On Thursday morning, Israel denounced the “shameful and absurd” decision by Guterres, calling it an attempt to “create a fake symmetry” with Hamas, which is already on the list. AFP

WASHINGTON, DC – The United States on Thursday (Friday, Manila time) designated two well-known Brazilian crime groups, the so-called Red Command and First Capital Command as terrorist organizations, despite opposition from Brasilia.

“CV and PCC are two of the most violent criminal organizations in Brazil,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement.

“Their influence and illicit networks extend far beyond Brazil’s borders, across our region and into our country.”

“Together, they command thousands of members and have orchestrated brutal attacks against Brazilian police officers, public officials and civilians,” Rubio said.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has made clear his opposition to this measure, which has broad legal implications in the United States.

The leftist leader’s main rival in upcoming elections, conservative Flavio Bolsonaro, has supported the designation. Bolsonaro met with US President Donald Trump earlier this week.

The US began designating criminal gangs -- such as Mexico’s Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels, and Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua -- as terrorists when Trump entered office in January 2025.

In the Trump administration’s view, the terrorist label makes it legally possible to undertake broader action -- law enforcement, intelligence and counterinsurgency efforts -- against the groups, their leaders and interests worldwide.

Countries such as Mexico and Brazil, with center-left leaders, have been vocal in opposing the designations, while others like Ecuador and Honduras, helmed by right-leaning governments, have supported them.

The measure announced by Washington has two stages: initially, PCC and CV are classified as “Specially Designated Global Terrorists.”

With this decision, the leaders and anyone associated with them can quickly be subjected to sanctions by the US Treasury Department. AFP

KINSHASHA – The UN health chief said Thursday the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo which has claimed over 200 lives can be stopped, as he arrived to oversee the fight against the highly infectious disease.

World Health Organization head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus’s plane landed in the capital Kinsasha on Thursday evening. He is set on Friday to travel to Ituri province in the northeastern DRC, the epidemic’s epicenter.

“That thing can be stopped,” Tedros said, adding that the WHO did not support travel bans to combat the outbreak because they “don’t help much”.

“Together, we will overcome this outbreak,” he said earlier, vowing to do “everything in my power to help you.”

The WHO has recorded 10 confirmed and 223 suspected Ebola deaths in the DRC since the outbreak was declared on May 15, out of more than 1,000 confirmed and suspected cases, according to its latest figures up to May 24. The true spread of the outbreak, thought to have circulated under the radar for some time, is likely much wider, the WHO has warned. This is the 17th recorded

QC road mishap leaves 18 hurt, tra ic mess-up

AT least 18 people were injured after a modern jeepney and an armored van collided along the westbound corner of Quezon Avenue and Miriam Defensor Santiago Avenue in Quezon City early Friday morning.

A passenger was trapped inside the overturned jeepney, but was later rescued and brought to the hospital.

Authorities cleared the traffic buildup an hour later.

The injured passengers were brought to Quezon City General Hospital, East Avenue Medical Center, and the National Kidney and Transplant Institute for treatment.

According to the jeepney driver, the armored van attempted to beat the red light while his jeepney was already moving forward through the intersection.

The van allegedly struck the jeepney, causing it to land on its side.

However, security guards onboard the armored van disputed the claim, saying their vehicle was already moving when the passenger jeepney hit them.

PNP chief welcomes formation of EJK fact-finding commission

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday welcomed the launch of the “EJK Truth Commission” that aims to document summary killings and alleged abuses linked to the previous administration’s war on drugs, saying the initiative could help bring clarity and healing to families and communities affected by the bloody anti-drug campaign.

PNP chief Gen.

of

“The Philippine National Police welcomes any independent initiative that aims to provide clarity and healing

to our nation. We fully support this search for truth, and I assure the public that the PNP will cooperate with the Commission within the bounds of legal protocols,” Nartatez said.

The independent body was formed by Church leaders and civil society groups to document atrocities in the anti-narcotics campaign of the Duterte administration. Organizers described the civilian-led initiative as an opportunity for “catharsis” and institutional healing.

It aims to collect testimonies from victims’ families, survivors, and even former law enforcers, while also gathering evidence that could support future prosecutions.

Ilagan launches P106-m corn post-harvest facility

ILAGAN City in Isabela province inaugurated recently a P106.9-million corn facility designed to reduce post-harvest losses and improve the farmers’ income.

The plant has a drying capacity of 10,560 metric tons annually.

It aims to provides farmers access to mechanized drying services previously inaccessible to most smallholders.

“This is how our concept of the circular economy model comes into play in the City of Ilagan — maximizing value, reducing losses, reusing resources, extending production cycles, and turning local strengths into long-term competitive advantage,” Mayor Josemarie Diaz said.

He described the project as “a direct income intervention for more than 1,100 corn farmers who have long sold wet, low-grade grain at a loss.”

With a drying fee of P1.70 per kilogram, the facility is projected to generate P17.9 million annually.

After operational costs estimated at P16.9 million, nearly P1 million is expected to remain for reinvestment, making the project self-sustaining from the outset.

Department of Agriculture (DA)

Undersecretary Roger Navarro said the facility supports the government’s food security and agricultural modernization agenda.

“Facilities like this reduce waste, stabilize supply, and give farmers bargaining power,” Navarro said.

The inauguration also marked the

signing of a buy-back memorandum of agreement among the city government, the Asosasyon ng mga Ama sa Siyudad ng Ilagan Multi-Purpose Cooperative, CP Seeds (Philippines) Corp., and Charoen Pokphand Foods Philippines Corp. to provide farmers with a guaranteed market and fixed pricing.

Meanwhile, Nartatez emphasized that the current police leadership has since implemented reforms when it comes to implementing anti-drug operations, adding that they operate under a strictly redefined framework.

“Our organization is fully committed to transparency, justice, and accountability as we continue to perform our mandate under the rule of law,” the PNP chief said. Among the reforms adopted in recent years following scrutiny over police anti-drug operations include the use of body cameras during operations, tighter supervision of antinarcotics units, and stricter internal accountability measures.

OPAPRU poised to launch online platform to help rebel returnees

THE online Transformation Program - Navigation Information System (TPNAVIS) will be launched soon to ensure that government assistance is provided to former rebels (FRs) who have voluntarily surrendered, according to the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU).

OPAPRU chief Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento said digital platforms such as TP-NAVIS are essential in preventing the duplication of services and interventions provided to the FRs. He also said the system will enable partner agencies, especially provincial governments, as frontline peace managers, to respond more effectively and efficiently.

“In building lasting peace, we must move beyond one-time interventions and ensure that every former rebel is continuously supported throughout their transition. A digital platform like TP-NAVIS enables us to systematically monitor the assistance provided, whether livelihood, housing, education, or psychosocial services, and ensure it is responsive to their evolving needs,” Sarmiento said.

The TP-NAVIS is a project under the CPP-NPA-NDF Peace Process Office (CPPO).

The peace agency said the full system will be launched once all program modules are completed, as the datasets are intended to capture the “reintegration and transformation” journey of each former rebel. Serving as a centralized hub, Sarmiento said that TP-NAVIS will function as an integrated database that consolidates comprehensive profiles of former rebels alongside detailed records of the assistance and interventions already provided to them, including livelihood, housing, education, and psychosocial support.

Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the police organization is prepared to cooperate with the Commission within the limits of the law while continuing reforms inside the institution in line with the instruction
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to ensure transparency and integrity in the police service.

Alcantara-Papa roll into doubles ‘ finals against Ledama-Olivarez

HEAVY favorites Casey Alcantara and Christopher Papa lived up to their billing, executing a pair of late-set surges to thwart AJ Lim and Ronard Joven, 6-4, 6-3, and book their ticket to the men’s doubles finals in the Palawan Open 2026 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center late Thursday.

NCR bet Santor completes 7-gold Palaro swim sweep

PROSPERIDAD, Agusan Del Sur—Star tanker

Patricia Mae Santor of the National Capital Region wrapped up her glittering Palarong Pambansa career as the most bemedalled athlete after striking a golden sweep of all her seven events in the 66th edition here.

The UAAP stalwart out of UST plucked her seventh gold medal as she touched the wall in one minute and 4.09 seconds in the 100-meter butterfly secondary girls event, finishing ahead of teammate Sinagtala Cuevas (1:06.75) and National Academy of Sports’ Riannah Chantelle Coleman (1:06.99) on Friday at the at the Datu Lipus Makapandong Gov. D.O. Plaza Memorial Sports Complex Aquatic Center.

record. I was a bit short,” Santor admitted. “Although I didn’t get it, I realized in the end that I was a bit hard on myself so inisip ko na lang, winork ko naman and I still did well.”

proving her five-gold finish from the Palaro 2025 in Laoag, Ilocos Norte.

The top-seeded duo will battle the fourth-ranked tandem of Nilo Ledama and Eric Jed Olivarez for the coveted crown and the ₱150,000 top purse, setting the stage for an explosive championship showdown. Alcantara, a seasoned doubles specialist, and his American partner Papa endured a grueling, hold-forhold battle against Lim and Joven through the first eight games of the opening set. Tied at 4, Alcantara and Papa finally broke through in a pressure-packed, back-and-forth ninth game before serving out the set. The second set followed a similar script, with both sides trading blows to reach a 3-3 count. Once again, Alcantara and Papa unleashed their full might when it mattered most – breaking their opponents in the seventh game, holding serve in the eighth, and breaking once more in the ninth to seal the straight-set victory.

“Marami akong pinagdaanan. A lot of challenges, motivations, and moments sa buong Batang Pinoy and Palaro years ko, but I still pushed through kahit mahirap,” Santor said.

Santor, however, would have wanted a slightly better Palaro swan song, turning emotional after emerging from the pool as she fell just short of shattering the 1:03.67 record in her pet event set by NCR’s Camille Lauren Buico in 2019.

“I became emotional not because of the seventh gold although it’s a really good achievement. I was aiming for the

“I really had high expectations. That (sweep) was my goal this Palaro as this is my last season. I’m really glad I got it in my last year,” the 18-year-old national team standout said.

Santor’s hard work indeed paid off as she still etched new marks in the 50m butterfly (28.98), and in the 4x50m medley relay (2:00.97) and 4x100m medley relay (4:27.13) with teammates Sophia Rose Garra, Krystal Ava David, Nichole Rivera, and Reiko Philomena Uy.

The Manileño pride also dominated the 400m (5:14.83) and 200m (2:27.94) individual medley categories as well as the 200m butterfly (2:22.44) to cap her entire Palaro haul to around 15 gold mints.

Santor replicated her feat as the most decorated athlete in Batang Pinoy 2025 in General Santos City (six golds and one silver) while im-

“Dahil sa mga supporters, coaches, and parents ko, sa mga nag-believe sa’kin, I still swam. ‘Di ako nag-give up and I tried my best,” she added. Fellow tankers Charles Nathan Boneo of CALABARZON and Riley Maddaleign Alindogan of Bicol Region followed suit in the individual medal race with six golds each in the national school games supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and organized by the Department of Education (DepEd).

While Alcantara and Papa relied on late-set heroics, Ledama and Olivarez punched their finals ticket in dominant fashion, dismantling the unranked pairing of Eric Tangub and Richard Bautista, 6-3, 6-1, in challenging court conditions.

Ledama and Olivarez signaled their intentions early, breaking Bautista and Tangub in the very first game of the match. They comfortably held serve four times before breaking again in the ninth game to pocket the first set. The second frame was a complete masterclass – the fourth seeds swept the first five games before routinely exchanging serves to wrap up the lopsided win.

CALOOCAN silenced Bulacan in the homestretch and prevailed, 91-84, on Thursday to gain the solo lead in the SportsPlus MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League) 2026 Season at the Malolos Convention Center in Bulacan.

Trailing, 83-84, with 1 minute and 17 seconds left, the Batang Kankaloo scored the nightcap’s last eight points to post their 10th straight win in the round-robin elimination phase of the two-division, 28-team tournament.

Jeramer Cabanag sparked Caloocan’s final assault with a drive, followed by two free throws each from Jielo Razon and Dom Escobar, and capped it with two charities of his own with 5.7 seconds left.

It was Kymani Ladi, however, who was chosen the SportsPlus best player when he pumped in six points in a 10-3 blitz that put Caloocan back in control, 83-79, after wasting a 50-24 spread.

The 6-foot-Ladi, a former Ateneo Blue Eagle, tallied 17 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists, followed by Jammer Jamito with 13 points and 7 rebounds, Cabanag with 11 points and 4 assists, and Paul Hendrix Casin with 10 points.

Speed cubing gets major boost in PH

A WORLD RECORD, a heavy turnout and an enthusiastic response from a live audience point toward a speed cubing boost in the country.

“We are pleased as we saw everyone’s enthusiasm in the cube,” said Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, president of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) which staged the first Philippine National Speed Cubing Open at the Tagaytay City Combat Center last Wednesday and Thursday.

As a result, Tolentino said that he will push for the inclusion of speed cubing as demonstration sport in the inaugural Southeast Asian Games Youth Plus that the country is hosting from December 2 to 14 next year in Metro Manila.

Alongside that, Tolentino said that the next step after the nationals is the country’s hosting of the Asian championships.

“We have unlocked a new era in speed cubing—from long time ago when as kids, we got enamored with the Rubik’s Cube,” said Tolentino, who heads the National League of Mind Sports and is also the vice president of the

A separate exhibition match between representatives of Pinukpuk Junction and Mapaco was also held, with Pinukpuk Junction declared the winner. It was not immediately clear which officials represented the two barangays in the match.

The boxing events formed part of a broader series of activities that turned the gathering into a festive spectacle, with supporters from various barangays rallying behind their representatives.

Aside from boxing, the town also staged an arm-wrestling competition during the First Gimpong Festival.

Brence Maguddayao of Barangay Taga claimed the lightweight arm-wrestling title after defeating Christian M. Sacyaten of Barangay Aciga in the finals held at the Taga Gymnasium. Maguddayao’s victory capped a dominant run in the tournament, with the champion backed by enthusiastic supporters from his barangay. Sacyaten finished runner-up after a strong showing throughout the competition.

PH business confidence sank in April

PHILIPPINE business sentiment

turned more pessimistic in April

2026 as concerns over escalating tensions in the Middle East dragged down confidence, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said.

The BSP reported that the business confidence index fell to -35.8 percent in April from -24.3 percent in March.

Firms worried that rising inflation could increase operating costs and weaken consumer purchasing power.

Despite the immediate downturn, companies grew less pessimistic about near-term prospects. The threemonth-ahead confidence index improved to -7.5 percent for July from -17.3 percent in the prior month, on expectations of stronger demand at the start of the academic year.

Businesses expect higher demand for clothing, apparel, loans and financing products.

Optimism also extended into the long term, with the 12-month-ahead confidence index rising to 19.5 percent from 11.7 percent. Firms anticipate stronger demand for business process outsourcing, construction and transport services.

“Respondents also cited expectations of higher sales and income, better overall economic conditions, and a possible resolution of the Middle East conflict as additional reasons for their improved outlook,” the BSP said.

April trade deficit hit $6b as fuel imports doubled

THE Philippine trade deficit widened by nearly 50 percent to $5.97 billion in April 2026, hitting its highest level in over three and a half years as a surge in imports vastly outpaced modest export growth, government data showed on Friday.

Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that the value of petroleum imports jumped 105 percent to $2.55 billion in April 2026 from just $1.24 billion a year ago.

The balance of trade in goods deficit grew 49.8 percent from the $3.98-billion gap recorded in the same month last year, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority.

The deficit represents the widest trade gap for the Southeast Asian nation since August 2022, when the

deficit reached $5.99 billion.

Total external trade climbed 16.1 percent to $20.38 billion compared with $17.55 billion in April 2025. Imported goods accounted for the lion’s share of trade at 64.6 percent, while exports made up the remaining 35.4 percent.

Imports drove the widening gap, surging 22.4 percent to $13.17 billion from $10.77 billion a year ago. Electronic products led the import growth with an increase of $1.85 billion, followed closely by mineral

fuels, lubricants and related materials which grew by $1.31 billion.

Merchandise imports from January to April totaled $49.22 billion, up 13.5 percent from the first four months of 2025 and the highest for the period since the data series began in 1991.

Export growth slowed in April.

Total export sales rose 6.3 percent annually to $7.21 billion, down from the 20.8 percent annual expansion recorded in March.

Electronic products remained the top export earner at $3.44 billion, representing 47.7 percent of total outbound shipments, while machinery and transport equipment posted the highest annual increment at $187.63 million. Despite the soft monthly growth, four-month exports rose 11.2 percent to a record $29.93 billion.

PH, Japan sign updated tax treaty to boost investment

THE Philippines and Japan signed an updated tax treaty to boost investments and deepen economic cooperation during Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s state visit to Japan, the Department of Finance (DOF) said.

The renegotiated agreement replaces a 1980 treaty that officials partially amended in 2008.

The revised Convention for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with Respect to Taxes on Income streamlines the tax treatment of crossborder income by eliminating double

Key railway projects create over 30,000 jobs

TWO of the Philippines’ flagship mass transit projects have generated more than 30,000 jobs for Filipino workers to date, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said. The 147-kilometer North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) employs about 21,031 Filipinos, while the 33-kilometer Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) accounts for 10,122 local workers. The job creation aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s “Build Better More” infrastructure program, which directs the DOTr to leverage megaprojects to address local unemployment and underemployment with competitive salaries and benefits.

To prioritize local hiring, the DOTr said it teamed up with foreign project contractors to recruit Filipino engineers, architects and technical professionals for project management offices and consulting firms. Contractors and subcontractors also hire local laborers and skilled workers for construction sites.

DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the agency actively encourages foreign contractors to prioritize hiring locals due to their competence, talent and skills.

“At DOTr, when we build a project like this, they need workers and we tell them to prioritize not only the Filipino workers but also the workers, the employees in the area. Filipinos are really good. That’s the kind of job generation and job employment that these big projects should bring,” Lopez said.

taxation risks, reducing business costs and improving tax predictability for individuals and enterprises.

Japan remains one of the top sources of foreign direct investments for the Philippines, with annual inflows exceeding $800 million in 2022 and 2023. The updated treaty introduces revised provisions on withholding taxes on dividends, interest and royalties to encourage greater investment flows.

The DOF said the agreement will create a more stable trade and investment environment while

supporting Japanese investments in advanced manufacturing, infrastructure and digital innovation.

The agency expects the clear rules on cross-border income taxation to benefit more than 245,000 Overseas Filipino Workers in Japan.

“This agreement reflects the Philippines’ commitment to fostering a more competitive, predictable, and investment-friendly environment that will create high-quality employment opportunities and sustained economic growth,” Finance Secretary Frederick Go said. Thony Rose Lesaca

THE government secured P56.3 billion in investment expansion commitments from four major Japanese companies during meetings on the sidelines of the President’s state visit to Japan. These projects are expected to generate about 10,300 direct and indirect jobs for Filipinos.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) reported that Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd., Sumitomo Electric Co. Ltd., MinebeaMitsumi Inc. and Tsuneishi Group Corp. committed to further expanding their investments for high-value manufacturing and industrial activity.

DTI Secretary Ma. Cristina A. Roque said the new commitments reflect the continued confidence of leading Japanese firms in the country as the Philippines expands its role in advanced manufacturing, electronics, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure and shipbuilding. Under the expansion plans, MinebeaMitsumi Inc. will scale up its semiconductor and advanced electronics operations in the Philippines. The expansion includes the production of batteryrelated components for data centers and optical image stabilization technologies used in electronic devices.

Furukawa Electric is spending P17 billion to expand its operations in Laguna Technopark. The company will produce advanced heat sink modules and thermal management products for data centers and highperformance computing systems, driven by rising demand linked to artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure. BDO simplifies banking services with innovations

CEBU CITY –BDO Unibank Inc.

introduced a suite of digital banking solutions and automated investment tools at its Cebu Regional hub on May 26, 2026 to simplify operations and wealth-building for entrepreneurs in the Visayas region.

The bank, which is celebrating its 50th year in the industry, aims to address interconnected financial needs including saving, investing, borrowing, payments, business operations and protection amid economic headwinds such as rising gasoline prices and geopolitical conflicts.

BDO trust and investments group senior vice president and department head Federico Ocampo said investment behaviors currently vary, with some clients opting for time deposits while others hold cash.

“Looking ahead, confidence may increase investment in government securities and offshore equities,” Ocampo said.

For immediate strategy, Ocampo recommended short-term safety through high-interest savings accounts before gradually returning to aggressive strategies. To foster longterm wealth building and retirement security, BDO launched an automatic investment plan that debits a fixed amount from a customer’s savings or credit card account.

“Make regular investments a habit, starting from small contributions, to ensure a secure financial future upon retirement,” Ocampo said. He said the easy investment plans simplify the process for beginners by including options like debt and credit investments.

To streamline branch operations, BDO digital banking group senior vice-president and head Roy Villareal introduced digital touchpoints like the Service Assist Machine (SAM) to eliminate manual forms.

The bank also launched a new universal teller machine for cash withdrawals, check deposits, passbook updates, bill payments and credit card applications outside branch hours.

MREIT to acquire 12 properties

MREIT Inc., the real estate investment arm of Megaworld Corp, signed an agreement to acquire 12 commercial properties, its largest single asset infusion ever, to expand its portfolio to nearly 1 million square meters.

The planned acquisition, known as the “Wave 5” expansion, will increase the company’s total portfolio by 47 percent to 950,000 square meters from 647,000 square meters, MREIT said in a stock exchange disclosure on Friday.

The assets cover around 303,500 square meters of gross leasable area, which includes five lifestyle malls, six Grade A office buildings and one

internationally branded hotel. MREIT signed the memorandum of agreement for the potential acquisition of the income-generating properties from Megaworld Corp, Travellers International Hotel Group and Southwoods Mall Inc.

The companies expect to complete due diligence and finalize definitive agreements within the second half of 2026.

To fund the deal, MREIT’s board will seek shareholder approval to issue up to 1.8 billion primary common shares for a property-for-share swap.

The transaction will diversify the company’s real estate investment trust assets, reducing its reliance on offices. The deal will shift its portfolio mix to about 77 percent office, 20 percent retail and 3 percent hospitality, compared with its current exposure of more than 95 percent office properties.

“Wave 5 is the biggest step in MREIT’s growth journey since our IPO,” MREIT Chairman Kevin Tan said.

“We are positioning MREIT for the next decade of compounding growth,” he said.

The proposed mall infusion includes Eastwood Mall in Quezon City, Venice Mall in Taguig

The Intelligent Transition: AI & EVs for the New School Year

How AI, electric mobility transform student life, travel & family routines

to learn how to study, commute, and navigate an intelligent world that is evolving at an ever-faster pace. (AI photo)

PHILIPPINE back-to-school season is no longer confined to notebooks, uniforms, and sharpened pencils. Increasingly, it starts with app downloads, device upgrades, route planning, and battery checks.

Around Metro Manila and other cities, Filipino families are undergoing a quieter but more profound change powered by artificial intelligence, connected devices, and the slow but steady rise of electric mobility. From students using AI-powered study tools, to parents navigating traffic with real-time apps, to commuters weighing electric transport options, technology is increasingly changing how we live our modern school year.

The transition is already happening, in plain view, in many ways.

Waze and other platforms have become daily essential companions for millions of Filipinos. What started as a simple navigation app has become a smart traffic ecosystem powered by crowd-sourced data, predictive routing, and AI-enabled traffic analysis. Parents shuttling children to schools in Makati, Quezon City, or Pasig routinely check congestion forecasts before leaving home, adjusting schedules in response to accident reports, flooding alerts, or sudden bottlenecks.

The morning school run itself has gone very digital.

Ride-hailing services such as Grab, JoyRide, and Green GSM, are increasingly being integrated into the daily mobility mix of students and young professionals. College students going to universities

in Manila and Taguig often take motorcycle taxi services to avoid traffic, while working parents use ride-hailing apps to handle pickups, deliveries, and errands throughout the day.

Many of these platforms now employ AI to improve the driver matching process, to estimate arrival times, to analyze traffic trends, and to optimize routes. But what appears to be a simple booking process is actually powered by layers of machine learning operating in the background. Even commuting is starting to change shape.

Once a luxury novelty, electric vehicles are now seen more often on Philippine roads. Companies like BYD, Tesla, and Nissan are helping to raise local awareness of EV technology, while Philippine distributors and mall operators are slowly developing charging infrastructure around Metro Manila.

Families sending kids to school are starting to look at hybrids and EVs not just because of the environment but because of climbing fuel costs and lower long-term maintenance costs. Charging stations are slowly becoming part of the urban landscape, in malls, business districts and mixed-use developments.

Meanwhile, smaller forms of electric mobility are gathering momentum. E-bikes and e-scooters are growing in popularity for short trips in urban Turn to C2

The Intelligent Transition: AI & EVs for the New School Year

Key points from Pope’s AI manifesto: Bold decisions

VATICAN CITY—

Pope Leo XIV’s first encylical -- a document which lays the basis for Church teaching and longer-term debate—sets out his thoughts mainly on the ethical questions raised by the boom of artificial intelligence.

Here are the key quotes from the text, “Magnifica Humanitas” (Magnificent Humanity):

‘Disarming AI’

“Calling for prudence, rigorous evaluation, and even, at times, a slower pace in adopting AI does not mean opposing progress; instead, it is an exercise of responsible care for the human family. This need is all the more urgent given the frequent imbalance between the speed of technological growth and the slower development of awareness, norms, safeguards and institutions capable of governing its effects. It is not enough to invoke ethics in the abstract; robust legal frameworks, independent oversight, informed users, and a political system that does not abdicate its responsibility are required.”

“As with every major technological shift, AI tends to amplify the power

Pangasinan 2nd District

Representative Mark Cojuangco (5th from left) underscored the urgent need for the Philippines to adopt a longterm solution that can provide clean, cheap, and reliable energy amid the ongoing crisis.

of those who already possess economic resources, expertise, and access to data. In light of the common good and the universal destination of goods, this raises serious concerns, since small but highly influential groups can shape information and consumption patterns, influence democratic processes and steer economic dynamics to their own advantage,

undermining social justice and solidarity among peoples.”

“Disarming AI means freeing it from the mentality of ‘armed’ competition, which today is not limited simply to the military context, but is also an economic and cognitive phenomenon. This entails a race for ever more powerful algorithms and larger datasets, driven by the desire to secure geopolitical or

Rising power costs reignite energy security debate

WHAT will it take for the Philippines to achieve an economically secure and energy-secure future?

The 1973 and 1979 global oil crises, triggered by supply disruptions in the Middle East at the time, exposed the Philippines’ heavy dependence on imported fuel and caused widespread economic strain across the country. Decades later, the country finds itself facing a familiar challenge once again.

Like déjà vu, the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, which continues to disrupt the global oil market, alongside rising commodity prices and worsening inflation, has once again brought concerns over energy security to center stage. The question remains the same: how can the Philippines secure a stable, affordable, and reliable source of energy?

The volatile Philippine energy landscape

The Philippines remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels for electricity generation, with coal accounting for more than 60% of the country’s energy mix. Natural gas follows, while renewable sources such as solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal make up a smaller mix. Because of this, global supply disruptions immediately impact

the local energy market, affecting households and businesses alike.

As a result, data shows the Philippines continues to record some of the highest electricity rates in Asia, with households paying an average of $0.207 per kWh—higher than neighboring Southeast Asian countries. Meanwhile, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) raised residential electricity rates to PHP14 pesos per kWh in early 2026, adding further strain on Filipinos already burdened by inflation.

Energy cost and economic impact

According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the Philippines is among the countries heavily affected by global oil price shocks because of its strong dependence on imported fuel. Without sufficient domestic energy sources, the country remains vulnerable to sudden international supply disruptions and market volatility.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) has repeatedly emphasized that affordable and reliable energy is one of the key drivers of economic growth. Lower electricity costs could make the Philippines more attractive to foreign investors, particularly in industries that require largescale manufacturing, technology

infrastructure, and data operations.

That is why in a recent media briefing, Pangasinan 2nd District

Representative Mark Cojuangco underscored the urgent need for the Philippines to adopt a long-term solution that can provide clean, cheap, and reliable energy amid the ongoing crisis.

Nuclear energy as the key long-term solution

As discussions surrounding the worsening energy crisis continue, advocates argue that nuclear power offers a unique advantage: it can provide stable baseload electricity while significantly reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.

According to insights shared by former Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) Director Dr. Carlo Arcilla, nuclear energy could play a critical role in strengthening the Philippines’ long-term energy security because nuclear plants can generate massive amounts of electricity continuously while producing minimal carbon emissions. This positions nuclear energy not only as a potential economic solution, but also as an important strategy for achieving the country’s long-term climate and sustainability goals.

commercial dominance. To disarm means discrediting the assumption that technical power automatically confers the right to govern. To disarm does not mean rejecting technology, but preventing it from dominating humanity. It means freeing technology from monopolistic control and opening it to discussion and debate, therefore making it human-friendly and

and suburban areas, especially where traffic congestion makes traditional commuting less practical.

AI is also being embedded in the educational experience itself in classrooms and homes.

Students now have AI-powered tools to summarize notes, correct grammar, translate languages, and help with research. High school and college students are increasingly familiar with apps like Google Gemini, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot as they navigate through essays, presentations, and review sessions.

Teachers, meanwhile, are adapting to a world in which AI can assist them with lesson planning, quiz creation, and administrative duties. As students gain access to generative technologies, some schools in the Philippines are starting to integrate discussions on responsible AI use, digital literacy, and misinformation awareness in their curriculum.

This is more than an academic change.

Today, artificial intelligence in smartphones can help students manage their calendars, record lectures, filter spam calls, and monitor wellness and screen time.

Smartwatches monitor your sleep and activity, while wireless earbuds have real-time translation and voice assistance capabilities that used to be exclusive to science fiction.

Connectivity is now as important as school supplies.

Many families now view fiber internet, 5G networks and portable WiFi devices as educational

restoring it to the plurality of human cultures and ways of life.”

‘New forms of slavery’

“Without bold decisions, the prospect of greater poverty and inequality looms large, which would leave many individuals marginalized, stranded, and surrounded by the machines and automated systems that have replaced them.”

“A significant part of the digital economy’s functioning relies on the silent work of millions of people engaged in essential yet largely unseen activities, such as data labeling, model training and content moderation, often involving disturbing material. In many cases, these workers are young people, predominantly women, working under demanding conditions for minimal wages. Added to this invisible labor is the even harsher work of extracting the resources required for the production of the devices and microprocessors on which AI depends.”

“It is not enough to invoke efficiency, nor to celebrate the benefits of innovation, if they are built on a chain of exploitation that remains deliberately hidden. If technology promises emancipation, yet produces new forms of global subordination, it stands in contradiction to the fundamental principle of human dignity. The fight against new forms of slavery is a decisive test for the ethical discernment of AI and digital transformation.” AFP

investments, after the pandemic accelerated digital learning habits. For multi-student, multi-remote worker households, reliable connectivity has become essential infrastructure.

But the transition is not without its problems.

Metro Manila traffic is still a mess despite smarter navigation systems. Public charging infrastructure for EVs is a work in progress. Issues of AI misuse, misinformation, privacy, and reliance of students on automation continue to be a topic of discussion between educators and parents.

And then there’s the accessibility issue. Affluent families may find it easier to adopt the latest devices and mobility technologies, but many Filipinos still struggle with affordability, whether it is AI-ready gadgets, a stable internet connection, or electric transportation options.

But the direction is getting clearer each year.

The Filipino school experience is no longer limited to classrooms and campuses. We now have smart devices, app-driven transportation, digital collaboration, and increasingly connected lifestyles that combine education, mobility, and technology into one seamless ecosystem.

Today’s students are growing up in an age of AI and electric mobility. They have to learn how to study, commute, and navigate an intelligent world that is evolving at an ever-faster pace.

MS TECH & MOBILITY TRENDS/ON THE ROAD

The Intelligent Transition: AI & EVs for the New School Year

The VinFast VF MPV 7 might be the sweet spot Filipino families have been waiting for

BIG cabin, lower running costs, and electric power without the usual premium price tag. The VF MPV 7 is aiming straight at the needs of modern Filipino families.

For years, the family MPV formula in the Philippines has been pretty simple. You buy one because you need space. You live with the slightly van-like looks. You accept the fuel bills. And somewhere along the way, “practical” became more important than “fun” or even “comfortable.”

But Filipino buyers are changing. Families today want a vehicle that can carry kids, grandparents, balikbayan luggage, grocery hauls, and road trip bags without feeling like a rolling appliance. They want something practical, yes, but also modern, comfortable, and easier on the wallet long term.

And then, there comes the VinFast VF MPV 7. Bigger, more refined, without the premium price

In the Philippines, buyers searching for a family-oriented 7-seater often face a familiar compromise between more affordable B-segment MPVs that prioritize practicality and compact dimensions, and larger C-segment models that offer more space and refinement but come with a higher ownership cost. The VF MPV 7 lands somewhere right in the middle, and that may be its biggest strength.

At 4,740 mm long with a 2,840 mm

wheelbase, the VF MPV 7 has the footprint and cabin proportions of a much larger peoplemover. On paper alone, it already looks like the kind of vehicle built for big Filipino families and long weekends out of town.

And in the Philippines, cabin space is not just a nice bonus. Just one family trip to Tagaytay with three kids, a cooler, overnight bags, and a lola in the third row is enough to remind anyone why space is king.

“I used to think EVs were mostly small city cars with tiny cabins,” said Marco, a father of three from Quezon City who recently checked out the VF MPV 7 online after its launch. “But when I started looking at the specs, I was honestly surprised. A cargo area that expands to as much as 1,240 liters with the rear seats folded down sounds like something built for actual family life.”

Lower monthly costs

Of course, space alone is no longer enough these days. Filipino families are becoming much more conscious about long-term ownership costs, especially after the past few weeks of unpredictable fuel prices. Daily drives from Cavite to BGC or Quezon City to Makati can quietly burn through thousands of pesos in fuel every month when driving a gasoline-powered vehicle.

By comparison, the VF MPV 7’s electric running costs remain far more stable.

Depending on driving habits and usage patterns, ownership costs can potentially drop by nearly half compared to traditional gasolinepowered MPVs.

“I drive from Cavite to BGC almost every day, so fuel spending has become something I constantly think about,” said Paolo, a 38-year-old small business owner who has been researching EV ownership and is now considering preordering the MPV 7. “At first I was just curious about EVs. But after doing the math, I realized this could actually make a big difference.”

VinFast is also sweetening the deal with free charging at V-Green charging stations in the Philippines until March 2029.

Then there is the battery subscription option, which lowers the initial purchase price and makes the vehicle more accessible to buyers entering the EV world for the first time. In the Philippines, the VF MPV 7 starts at P1,239,000 under the battery subscription model.

Early buyers also get extra perks. The first 1,000 customers who choose the battery subscription option will receive one year of free battery subscription for up to 2,000 km per month. Customers who purchase the vehicle with the battery included will receive a direct discount of P27,200.

Performance that feels closer to an SUV

Traditional family MPVs are usually tuned for

comfort and practicality first. Fast acceleration is rarely part of the conversation. The VF MPV 7 changes that a bit.

Its electric motor produces 150 kW and 280 Nm of torque, making it one of the more powerful options in the segment. More importantly, because it is electric, torque arrives instantly. That matters more than people think, especially in Metro Manila traffic where quick merges, overtaking jeepneys, and stop-and-go driving are part of daily survival. Then comes the ownership side of the equation, which is still one of the biggest question marks for first-time EV buyers in the Philippines. The VF MPV 7 comes with a 7-year or 160,000 km vehicle warranty and a 10-year or 200,000 km battery warranty, among the longest in its segment.

Programs like the Residual Value Guarantee initiative are also designed to ease concerns about long-term resale value, which remains one of the most common questions among first-time EV buyers.

“Battery durability was honestly my biggest concern at first,” admitted Anna, a mother from Laguna who is planning to replace her diesel MPV next year. “But when I saw the warranty coverage and the long-term support plans, it made the idea of switching to an EV feel much less intimidating.”

FROM quieter rides to lower operating costs, the VinFast Limo Green is emerging as a practical EV choice for both TNVS work and family use.

The undeniable advantages of electric vehicles in terms of operating costs and driving performance convinced Paul Simbulan, a ride-hailing driver from Quezon, to choose the VinFast Limo Green. The decision, he said, turned out to be highly practical, giving him a spacious family vehicle while also helping him generate stable daily income through TNVS operations.

One vehicle, two roles Before switching to an EV, Simbulan had long preferred gasoline-powered MPVs for family outings. However, increased exposure to electric mobility gradually changed his perspective.

“I had booked Green SM rides for the whole family several times in the past,” Simbulan shared. “Every time, the Limo Green felt very comfortable inside, and the cabin was noticeably quiet even in heavy

traffic. I also spoke with several drivers already using the vehicle before deciding to buy one myself.”

After several months of operating the Limo Green, Simbulan said he now sees it as a true “two-inone” vehicle, capable of handling both family needs and commercial transport work effectively.

The vehicle’s driving range of up to 450 km per full charge gives him much greater flexibility for longer trips and airport transfers. He added that the fast-charging capability, which allows the battery to recharge in around 30 minutes, helps maximize operating time throughout the day.

“A short charging stop is enough for a quick rest before heading out again,” he said. “It doesn’t really interrupt the workday.”

In terms of driving performance, Simbulan said the Limo Green feels noticeably different from traditional gasoline MPVs. With output reaching 150 kW and 280 Nm of torque, the vehicle accelerates smoothly and responds quickly in urban traffic conditions.

The spacious seven-seat cabin further increases the vehicle’s practicality.

“The cabin feels solid and roomy,” Simbulan said. “It works well for family trips, but it is also ideal for carrying passengers.”

He added that the larger passenger capacity also improves business efficiency, especially for airport bookings, group rides, and fixed-route transport services.

Lower costs, more income to take home

For ride-hailing drivers, stable performance is only part of the equation. Operating costs are equally important because they directly affect how much income drivers can retain.

That is another area where Simbulan believes the Limo Green stands out. Alongside significantly lower charging costs compared with gasoline vehicles, VinFast also offers its user free charging support at V-Green stations through March 2029 in Southeast Asia, including for commercial users.

For high-mileage ride-hailing

drivers, fuel expenses from a conventional gasoline MPV can easily reach several thousand pesos per month. Over the course of nearly three years, that can add up to hundreds of thousands of pesos in operating costs.

By comparison, Limo Green drivers using the free charging support policy can effectively bring their running costs close to zero during the support period. For drivers operating daily, the difference could mean retaining a substantially larger share of their income over time.

Real-world EV experiences are also helping reinforce confidence among Filipino users.

One example came from a VinFast user surnamed Santos, who recently shared his experience in a VinFast Facebook community after completing an extensive Luzon road trip. In just 12 days and nearly 2,900 kilometers, Santos drove through Marikina, Batangas, Tagaytay, Quezon, Naga, Caramoan, Pampanga, Pangasinan, and

Baguio. Despite covering 10 destinations, he said the total charging expense amounted to only around PHP 1,900.

“Sobrang sulit,” he wrote. Stories like this may explain why more transport drivers are beginning to consider EVs not just as personal vehicles, but also as practical business tools, and not just in the Philippines.

That growing demand is also reflected in VinFast’s home market of Vietnam, where the Limo Green has become a highly popular vehicle for ride-hailing and fleet operations. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, combined sales of the Limo Green and its sibling model, the VF MPV 7, a more family-oriented electric MPV designed for private ownership, exceeded 16,000 units, with the Limo Green accounting for 12,471 vehicles, topping the mid-size MPV segment . For drivers who want to enter the ride-hailing business without spending heavily upfront, VinFast recently introduced its Green vehicle rental program in the Philippines and Indonesia.

Under the program, customers can rent vehicles from VinFast’s Green lineup through authorized dealerships alongside the traditional purchase route. The initiative was designed to help drivers begin earning quickly through lower upfront costs and fixed daily rental rates starting from PHP 1,000 in the Philippines. VinFast said the program was launched amid ongoing fuel price volatility, allowing drivers to access cost-effective EVs without the burden of full vehicle ownership. The rental model centers around VinFast’s Green lineup, including the Limo Green, which was specifically developed for high-frequency transport services and passenger operations.

For Simbulan, the appeal is ultimately simple. The same vehicle that comfortably carries his family on weekends is also helping support his livelihood throughout the week.

“I still recommend the Limo Green to friends whenever they ask about EVs,” he said.

Smartphone gimbals, on the other hand, help stabilize video footage for content creators and casual travelers alike. Even ordinary users now create cinematic travel videos through social media platforms, making these gadgets more practical than ever.

Another gadget that continues to gain popularity among Filipino travelers is the portable WiFi device. While mobile signal coverage in the Philippines has improved over the years, there are still destinations where internet connectivity becomes unreliable. Travelers who work remotely or rely heavily on online communication often bring portable Wi-Fi devices to stay connected.

Portable Wi-Fi gadgets are particularly useful for group travel because several devices can connect at the same time. Families and friends traveling together can split costs while enjoying internet access during road trips or hotel stays. For digital nomads and content creators, stable internet access allows them to upload

The growing popularity of travel gadgets in the Philippines reflects changing lifestyles and travel habits. People are becoming more mobile, digitally connected, and dependent on technology for convenience. However, practicality remains important for Filipino consumers. Travelers often look for gadgets that are durable, affordable, lightweight, and suitable for tropical conditions.

At the same time, these gadgets are not simply about luxury or trendiness. Many of them address real travel challenges that Filipinos regularly encounter, including extreme heat, unreliable connectivity, crowded transportation systems, and unpredictable weather. The right gadget can reduce stress, improve safety, and allow travelers to focus more on enjoying their experience.

As summer travel continues to grow across the country, gadgets are becoming more of a necessity for travelers and everyday Filipinos alike. They keep devices charged during long commutes, protect belongings from sudden rain, help travelers stay cool under the scorching sun, and preserve memories through photos and videos. In a country where travel often involves both adventure and unpredictability, technology has found a practical place in the bags of Filipino travelers.

For many people, the best travel gadget is not necessarily the most expensive or most advanced. Instead, it is the one that solves problems at the right moment. As Filipinos continue to embrace travel during the summer season, these gadgets are proving that small tools can make a significant difference in creating smoother, safer, and more enjoyable adventures.

historical events, or simulate mock interviews. Language learners may use AI chatbots to practice speaking English or to improve their grammar.

Generative AI is democratising access to academic help in many ways, especially for students who might not always have access to private tutors or expensive review centres.

The technology is also changing collaboration in the classroom itself.

Group projects, previously managed through fragmented chats and scattered documents, are increasingly being organized through cloud-based platforms enhanced by AI. Students work together in shared workspaces, automated scheduling tools, and AI-generated summaries that keep teams in sync, whether they are in different locations.

Virtual classrooms are popping up on platforms like Google Workspace and Microsoft Teams, where brainstorming, editing, communication, and project management all happen at the same time.

Teachers are adapting, too.

Some teachers are now turning to AI for help writing quizzes, lesson plans,

and SIHUB headquarters, founders and their teams will be equipped with advanced skills in essential disciplines like agentic coding, AI context engineering, large language model operations (LLMOps), and the orchestration of multi-agent systems.

• High-touch engineering advisory: Startups engage in structured product development sprints and architectural reviews with technical leads from Google Cloud’s engineering center and Google DeepMind’s AI research lab in Singapore, supported by insights from Google’s global AI teams.

• Cross-functional ecosystem support: Startups can capitalize on mentorship from product teams across Android, Google Ads, Google Pay, and Google Play, alongside a partner network of venture capital firms, conglomerates, unicorns, and specialist consultancies to overcome critical scaling hurdles—from intellectual property management to talent acquisition and growth marketing.

• High-visibility commercial stage: Startups get the opportunity to showcase proprietary products to a curated audience of venture capitalists, angel investors, and enterprise customers at a Google-hosted demo day and startup summit in Singapore.

“Our partnership with Google Cloud has benefitted close to 60 Singapore AI startups,” said Wong Zeng Yi, Assistant Managing Director, Enterprise Singapore. “We’re pleased to deepen this collaboration to enable the next wave of startups to gain access to the networks and technical expertise needed to scale and enter new markets. EnterpriseSG will continue to work with like-minded partners and industry players to foster a thriving AI ecosystem in Singapore where startups can innovate and establish themselves as global players.”

“As the nucleus of Ho Chi Minh City’s innovation ecosystem—now ranked among the world’s top 100—SIHUB is committed to fast-tracking the transition from technical proof-of-concept to commercial success,” said Dang Thi Luan, Director, Startup and Innovation Hub of Ho Chi Minh City.

discussion prompts, and grading rubrics. Others embed AI literacy into their courses, teaching students how to factcheck, identify hallucinations, and use generative tools responsibly.

Schools are also beginning to grapple with tougher questions about academic integrity. Plagiarism, over-reliance on automation, and misinformation have caused educators to reconsider how they assess students and classroom rules.

Many institutions are beginning to explore ways that AI can be incorporated into education in a meaningful, ethical way, rather than blanket bans.

The AI transition in the Philippines remains uneven, with internet access and the affordability of devices still highly variable. Students in urban areas with reliable connectivity will obviously have more access to advanced tools than students in underserved communities.

But gaps notwithstanding, the momentum is there.

Generative AI is no longer a futuristic concept for tech companies or software developers. It’s already part of the everyday routines of Filipino students— helping them study smarter, collaborate faster, and manage ever more challenging academic environments.

Amazon OKs AI-generated shows for children

LOS ANGELES—Amazon MGM Studios announced Wednesday it has greenlit the first three children’s shows that were created under a new initiative to use artificial intelligence (AI) in content development.

The GenAI Creators Fund pays filmmakers, digital creators and startups to use AI to develop their projects in a short time frame.

“Punky Duck” series director Jorge Gutierrez said he is used to spending two years making a pilot, but his new show was greenlit to run on Amazon after just two months.

“The best way I can describe it is, it’s like you have sex and then someone hands you the baby,” Gutierrez said at the annual AI on the Lot Conference, where the first images of the approved animated series were shown. “It’s pretty crazy.”

Two more projects -- “Diana Music Hunters” from Albie Hecht and “Cupcake & Friends” from Buzzfeed Studios -- were also greenlit in a couple of months, reflecting a new approach from major studios.

Hollywood’s unions and artists have raised concerns about the use of AI, with creatives, writers and actors fearing they could be replaced by digital facsimiles. AI Studios chief at Amazon MGM Albert Cheng told the conference that the technology won’t eliminate jobs, it will actually reduce costs and timelines to make it possible to increase the number of productions. But Cheng acknowledged “AI is addictive,” adding that it’s important for humans to make sure they don’t “succumb and let our brains go to waste.” AFP

Hidden cost pressures are quietly reshaping Manila’s ride-hailing industry

AMID volatile fuel prices and worsening traffic congestion, many drivers in Metro Manila say the biggest challenge in ride-hailing today is no longer simply finding passengers, but figuring out how to keep operating profitably in an increasingly pressured market.

An increasing number of drivers and transport operators in Metro Manila say maintaining gasolinepowered vehicles for transport services is becoming significantly more difficult amid prolonged congestion, volatile fuel prices and shrinking profit margins.

What was once considered a manageable operating expense is gradually becoming one of the mobility sector’s biggest structural challenges in the Philippines.

The Philippines remains one of Southeast Asia’s most oil-importdependent economies, making the transport sector particularly vulnerable to fluctuations in global energy prices. According to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), transportation costs have consistently ranked among the major contributors to inflation, particularly during periods of sharp fuel price According

increases. Fuel hikes have also repeatedly triggered pushback from taxi and jeepney groups as drivers struggle with declining real åincomes. For app-based drivers, the pressure is even more pronounced because most operating expenses are absorbed individually.

Unlike traditional taxi fleets, the Philippine ride-hailing market depends heavily on privately operated gasoline vehicles. That means every

fluctuation in fuel prices directly affects drivers’ daily earnings, while fare increases remain difficult due to competition between platforms and broader market pressure to keep prices affordable.

“When operating costs become unstable, the driver becomes the shock absorber of the system,” said Rene E. Santiago, a Philippine transport economist and infrastructure consultant. “That

becomes even more difficult in cities where congestion already reduces operational efficiency.”

Metro Manila’s traffic conditions make the situation significantly more complex. According to Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), traffic congestion in the Philippine capital has historically cost the economy billions of pesos per day through lost productivity and transport inefficiencies.

For drivers operating gasolinepowered vehicles, that often translates into longer idle hours, continued fuel consumption and fewer completed trips across an entire shift.

“There are days when I spend almost half my shift barely moving in traffic,” said Paolo, an app-based driver in Quezon City. “Fuel keeps getting consumed, but the number of completed trips goes down. That’s why many drivers are starting to think more seriously about operating costs.” In practice, many drivers are now working longer hours without seeing a proportional increase in take-home income. Industry observers say this is one reason the transport sector in the Philippines is beginning to focus more closely on the long-term sustainability of operating costs rather than simply fleet expansion or platform growth.

That conversation is unfolding alongside the Philippine government’s broader push toward transport electrification through the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA), which encourages wider EV adoption across both private and commercial transportation sectors. The transition, however, remains far from straightforward. Gasoline vehicles still dominate the country’s transport ecosystem. Charging infrastructure remains concentrated primarily in major urban areas, while financing access continues to limit how quickly many drivers can realistically shift to EVs.

Beyond Reliable and Fast Internet: PLDT Home Champions Safer Digital Spaces for Filipinos

EVERY day, millions of Filipinos go online to work, study, run businesses, connect with loved ones, consume content, and manage daily transactions. As digital life becomes more deeply woven into everyday living, online risks are also becoming harder to ignore.

From phishing scams and identity theft to misinformation and harmful online behavior, internet users today are navigating a digital environment that demands not only access, but awareness, vigilance, and responsibility.

Recognizing this growing reality, PLDT Home continues to go beyond delivering reliable and fast internet by championing responsible digital citizenship through Online Alerto, its online safety advocacy that empowers Filipinos to navigate the digital world more safely and responsibly.

Launched in October 2022 as a Facebook community initiative, Online Alerto was designed in response to the increasing need for digital safety awareness in the country. More than an online group, it is a growing digital community where Filipinos find educational content, actionable online safety tips, discussions about responsible internet use, and reallife conversations on navigating today’s increasingly complex digital world.

Today, the Online Alerto community has grown to more than 77,000 members, reflecting the growing relevance of conversations around online vigilance, misinformation, scams, digital well-being, and responsible internet use among Filipino families and communities.

The initiative reinforces PLDT Home’s belief that while connectivity enables opportunities, meaningful digital progress also requires awareness, accountability, and shared responsibility.

Today, conversations around internet access can no longer focus solely on speed, bandwidth, or coverage. As digital platforms become deeply embedded in everyday life, internet users must also learn how to protect themselves, think critically online, and engage responsibly in digital spaces.

A 2026 report by TransUnion showed that Filipinos remained more exposed to digital fraud than the global average, with the Philippines’ suspected digital fraud rate reaching 4.1% in 2025 versus the global rate of 3.8%. The study also found that 72% of surveyed Filipino consumers said they were targeted by digital fraud attempts through online platforms, email, phone calls, or text messages between August and December 2025, significantly higher than the global average of 53%.

This heightened exposure highlights the urgent need for stronger public awareness and digital safety education initiatives that help Filipinos recognize, avoid, and report online threats. Through Online Alerto, PLDT Home regularly creates educational and community-driven content that makes online safety more accessible and relatable to everyday Filipinos. Beyond sharing practical tips on spotting scams, identifying misinformation, and practicing responsible social media behavior, the platform also opens meaningful conversations around the real-life online experiences of public figures, creators, and young Filipinos. Among its key initiatives are Facebook Live sessions featuring personalities who openly discuss the realities of navigating digital spaces responsibly. Featured guests included PLDT High Speed Hitters athletes Mika Reyes, Jessey De Leon, and Kiana

Dy, who shared their experiences dealing with online pressure, social media toxicity, public scrutiny, and the importance of maintaining healthy digital boundaries.

To date, the initiative’s Facebook Live sessions have attracted more than 25,000 attendees, underscoring the growing public interest in conversations surrounding online safety, digital responsibility, and healthy online behavior.

By opening these conversations to the public, Online Alerto helps younger internet users better understand the impact of their online behavior and encourages more mindful and responsible engagement in digital spaces.

Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC), preventing billions of illicit access attempts. Beyond technology, we continue to work with various child rights organizations to promote child rights and online protection. For PLDT Home, true connectivity goes beyond access. It requires awareness, vigilance, and shared responsibility so Filipinos can engage online safely and with confidence,” added Jimenez. PLDT Group’s cybersecurity efforts show the scale of protection needed in today’s digital environment. From January to March 2026 alone, the group blocked 49 billion access attempts to malicious domains, prevented 1.4 billion cyber attacks and data breaches, and blocked 208,000 access attempts to OSAECrelated URLs and content. These operational safeguards provide the technology backbone for Online Alerto’s broader mission of helping Filipino families become safer and more responsible digital citizens.

“As digital platforms increasingly shape how Filipinos live, learn, work, and transact, online safety must be embedded into the infrastructure that connects them,” said Menardo “Butch” Jimenez, Jr., PLDT Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer.

“Through Online Alerto, the PLDT Group continues to strengthen cybersecurity, advance responsible AI, and apply security - by - design across its networks. We use a specialized child protection platform that automatically detects and blocks URLs linked to Online

Beyond online conversations, PLDT Home is also bringing digital safety education directly to students through Online AlerTour, an onground campus initiative conducted in partnership with the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group. The program addresses pressing online concerns, including phishing scams, misinformation, identity theft, online fraud, and responsible social media behavior, equipping young Filipinos with the knowledge needed to become more vigilant and responsible digital citizens.

To date, Online AlerTour has engaged more than 500 students across campuses, including Far Eastern University, Universidad de Manila, and Polytechnic University of the Philippines, with more upcoming campus activations in the pipeline.

As the country continues to embrace a more digitally connected future, PLDT Home reinforces an important message: true digital progress is measured not only by how fast people can connect but also by how safely and responsibly they navigate the digital world.

Capture every summer moment with the right 2026 smartphone

SUMMER in the Philippines

is more than just extreme heat and humidity. It’s a time to enjoy clear blue skies, picturesque scenery, and traveling to new places to soak up the sun or cool down from it (sometimes both). But as sentimental beings, summer escapades require proper documentation to look back on or share on social media.

Here’s where the smartphone comes in. Undoubtedly, smartphones have become an essential part of everyday life, even seeming like an extra limb, because people always keep them close to navigate their day-to-day with convenience. It makes for the perfect gadget to bring along to make summer travel easier and capture every memory.

But with a saturated smartphone market, what’s the best device to invest in?

Among the brands that continue to gain attention in the Philippines is HONOR, which has steadily built a reputation for combining stylish designs with camera-focused features. Many of its smartphones emphasize highresolution photography, AI-enhanced editing, and large batteries that are useful for travelers constantly capturing photos and videos throughout the day. HONOR devices are also known for their sleek and lightweight designs, making them practical companions for people who prefer to travel light while still documenting every moment of their trips. Their recently launched HONOR 600 is selling like hotcakes, because of these reasons.

Another major player in the travel photography category is OPPO. The brand has long positioned itself as a smartphone maker that prioritizes camera performance, particularly for portraits and social mediaready photos. OPPO smartphones, like the OPPO Find N6,are often praised for their vibrant color reproduction, image stabilization, and user-friendly camera software. These features appeal to casual users who simply want beautiful vacation photos without spending too much time adjusting settings. During summer trips, convenience matters greatly, especially when moments happen quickly, and travelers want to capture memories instantly. Alongside OPPO is vivo, another brand that has become popular among photography enthusiasts and content creators in the Philippines. vivo smartphones, such as its vivo X300 Pro, are frequently recognized for producing natural-looking portraits and detailed selfies, which have become

increasingly important in today’s social media culture. Many of its devices also focus heavily on video quality and low-light performance, allowing users to record clearer footage during evening dinners,

concerts, and nighttime city walks. This balance between photography and videography has helped vivo appeal to younger travelers who enjoy creating short-form video content during their adventures.

Budget-conscious travelers, meanwhile, are increasingly looking toward brands like Infinix and TECNO. Both companies have grown rapidly in the Philippine market by offering smartphones that combine affordable prices with features once found only in more expensive devices. For many consumers, these brands represent practical choices for travel photography without the need to spend flagship-level amounts.

Infinix smartphones are particularly popular for their long battery life, fast charging capabilities, and large displays. These features are useful for travelers who spend entire days outside taking photos, navigating unfamiliar places, streaming music during road trips, or editing content on the go. Some Infinix devices also emphasize AI-powered photography, helping users improve photos automatically through enhanced lighting and scene optimization. This makes mobile photography easier even for users who are not familiar with advanced camera settings.

stylish aesthetics that appeal to younger users. In the Philippines, TECNO continues to gain popularity because of its ability to deliver capable cameras at accessible price points. Travelers who want reliable smartphone photography without overspending often find the brand appealing because it balances affordability with features designed for social media content creation.

Of course, conversations about photography smartphones would not be complete without the iPhone. Apple continues to remain one of the most trusted names when it comes to mobile photography and videography. While Android brands have significantly improved over the years, many creators still prefer the iPhone because of its consistent image quality, smooth video stabilization, and seamless editing ecosystem.

One of the strongest advantages of the iPhone is its video performance. Whether capturing waves at the beach, filming food reviews, or recording scenic drives, iPhones are known for producing stable and naturallooking footage. Their camera systems are also appreciated for accurate colors and reliable performance across different lighting conditions. For travelers who frequently create vlogs, reels, or cinematic travel videos, these qualities remain highly valuable.

can immediately become part of a digital travel diary shared with friends and followers online. Because of this, consumers are no longer choosing phones based solely on performance or price. Camera quality, battery endurance, charging speed, portability, and editing features now play equally important roles in buying decisions. As summer travel continues to shape lifestyle trends, smartphone brands are responding by improving the features that matter most to travelers. Whether through stronger batteries, brighter displays for outdoor use, AI-enhanced cameras, or smoother video stabilization, brands like HONOR, OPPO, vivo, Infinix, TECNO, iPhone, and other well-known names are competing to become the ideal travel companion for Filipino consumers. In the end, the best summer smartphone is not necessarily the one with the most expensive price tag or the highest megapixel count. It is the device that fits naturally into a traveler’s lifestyle, survives long days of exploration, captures meaningful memories clearly, and makes sharing experiences easier. In a country filled with breathtaking beaches, vibrant festivals, scenic mountains, and bustling city life, smartphones have become more than simple gadgets. They have become modern travel companions that help preserve every unforgettable summer

What stands out this year is how smartphone photography itself has evolved. Cameras are no longer judged solely by megapixel numbers. Artificial intelligence now plays a major role in improving photos and videos automatically. Smartphones can brighten dark scenes, stabilize shaky footage, remove unwanted objects from backgrounds, and enhance colors with just a few taps. For travelers, these tools make it easier to create polished content instantly without needing professional editing software.

TECNO has also carved out a strong identity in the photography-focused

This shift reflects how modern travel habits have changed. Many people now prefer lighter and more convenient travel setups. Carrying professional cameras is not always practical during island hopping, hiking trips, or crowded commutes. Smartphones provide flexibility that traditional cameras sometimes cannot match. They fit inside pockets, allow instant uploads to social media, and make editing possible almost anywhere.

In the Philippines, where travel and social media culture are deeply connected, smartphones have become essential storytelling tools. Every beach sunset, mountain view, café visit, and city adventure

AI giant Anthropic reaches near-trillion

SAN FRANCISCO—Artificial intelligence company Anthropic said Thursday it had raised $65 billion in a new funding round that values the Claude maker at $965 billion, more than its archrival OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT.

The latest fundraising round confirms Anthropic’s place as one of the most significant players in AI, with the startup led by Dario Amodei having drawn fans for its coding powers and state-of-the-art models.

Anthropic’s rise came by doubling down on delivering generative AI to enterprise clients rather than general users, the path initially chosen by archrival OpenAI.

Founded by former OpenAI employees, including CEO Amodei, Anthropic has a special focus on AI safety even as it rushes out new products in order to remain in the AI race.

“This funding will help us serve the historic

demand we are experiencing, stay at the research frontier, and bring Claude to more of the places where work happens,” said Krishna Rao, Anthropic’s chief fi nancial offi cer.

Anthropic’s near-trillion-dollar valuation puts it ahead of OpenAI, which was valued at $852 billion in March. Both companies could go public as early as this year.

Ahead of them, Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which absorbed his AI company, xAI, in February, could see shares begin trading as early as June 12, targeting a valuation of approximately $1.75 trillion in what

Canon Marketing PH leads Brigada Eskwela

CANON Marketing Philippines recently led faculty, students, and employee volunteers at Lagro High School for this year’s Brigada Eskwela, helping prepare classrooms ahead of the opening of classes. The activity brought together Canon employees and the school’s student council to repaint and refresh classrooms, creating a more welcoming environment for returning students. Beyond the physical improvements, the initiative reflected the collaboration and community spirit that Brigada Eskwela represents each year.

Volunteers worked side by side through a morning of paint-streaked shirts, teamwork, and meaningful conversations, all toward a common goal: classrooms where students feel motivated to learn and grow.

Canon Marketing Philippines also donated printers to support the school’s teaching and administrative needs, reinforcing the

company’s commitment to empowering educators and students through technology.

“Our participation in Brigada Eskwela reflects Canon’s Kyosei philosophy of living and working together for the common good,” said Anuj Aggarwal, President and CEO of Canon Marketing Philippines.

“We believe education plays a vital role in shaping communities, and through simple but meaningful initiatives like this, we hope to help create better learning environments for students and teachers alike. Kyosei is most meaningful when experienced through collective action and genuine care for others.” Through initiatives like Brigada Eskwela, Canon Marketing Philippines continues to strengthen its corporate social responsibility commitment by supporting communities and contributing to spaces where people can learn, connect, and thrive.

MOBILE gaming continuously pushes modern smartphones to their absolute limits. Extended gaming sessions and intense matches often lead to heavy overheating, causing frustrating frame drops and performance throttling that can disrupt the entire experience. For casual players, it interrupts moments of fun; for competitive eSports athletes, even a millisecond of lag can mean the difference between victory and defeat.

Designed to eliminate these exact challenges, Infinix is set to launch its next-generation esports flagship: the Infinix GT 50 Pro.

Active HydroFlow Liquid Cooling: A Hardware Breakthrough

At the core of the Infinix GT 50 Pro is the proprietary HydroFlow Liquid Cooling system—an industry-first thermal management innovation that goes far beyond traditional passive cooling methods. Equipped with a dual-piezoelectric ceramic pump, the system actively circulates coolant through laserengraved channels to rapidly dissipate heat away from critical internal components like the processor and battery.

The architecture’s large cooling layer is built directly with the main heat sink to fully cover 100% of the hottest core components, allowing users to enjoy smoother, more consistent gaming performance for longer periods. By minimizing thermal buildup directly at the source, the GT 50 Pro effectively prevents performance throttling and stabilizes FPS (Frames Per Second), ensuring gamers stay locked into the action during high-stakes moments.

During long, high-load gaming sessions, active cooling keeps temperatures stable by efficiently spreading and channeling heat away from critical areas, reducing processor throttling. This ensures consistently smooth performance, enabling native 144FPS support with stable high frame rates and minimal frame drops or stutter.

The training program extended beyond standard maintenance to focus on the specialized functions and technical specifications that define TCL products. A core component of the training included practical sessions on TCL’s smart technology, such as the TCL Home App and Voice Command features. By mastering these proprietary innovations, learners are better equipped to service modern, connected households that set TCL apart from other brands. TCL partner B2B dealer Firstar, led by Pika Lee, also attended the three-day training session to announce the learner profiling initiative scheduled on the final day. By the third day, the program transitioned into a formal evaluation and mini job fair, offering the learners a unique platform for professional assessment. This initiative aimed to pinpoint high-potential individuals and open doors for long-term employment.

The program culminated in a certificate awarding ceremony, marking the learners’ official transition into the workforce. This certification validates their newly acquired mastery of TCL technology and serves as a direct pathway to career opportunities at different authorized service centers nationwide.

“At TCL, we are dedicated to investing in the people who keep the industry moving. It’s been a privilege to support the upskilling of our Filipino technicians through this program. While this session has ended, our commitment has not — stay tuned for even more training opportunities as we continue to inspire greatness and build the future of technical excellence together,” Cernitchez exclaims.

battery. Together, the GT 50 Pro and Magcharge Cooler deliver a comprehensive dual-cooling ecosystem built to withstand the most intense competitive matches.

Largest-Ever 3D Vapor Chamber in GT History

The GT 50 Pro packs the largest 3D Vapor Chamber ever in GT history, built to keep gameplay smooth even during long, intense gaming sessions. Think of it as a powerful cooling system inside the phone that helps pull heat away fast, so players can stay focused on winning instead of dealing with lag, overheating, or sudden frame drops.

With a massive 7,700mm² 3D Vapor Chamber and a total cooling area of 32,700mm², which is 63.5% bigger than the previous generation, the GT 50 Pro is designed to stay cool under pressure whether you’re grinding ranked matches, streaming, or multitasking for hours. Combined with ultra-large graphite cooling layers, the device delivers more stable performance so gamers can enjoy consistently smooth gameplay from start to finish.

HydroFlow Liquid Cooling offers three selectable modes to match different usage needs. Smart Mode automatically adjusts and switches to the optimal flow velocity depending on the scenario for balanced performance and efficiency. Normal Mode runs at a lower flow velocity for everyday use with standard heat dissipation. Rapid Mode increases flow velocity for stronger heat dissipation, ideal for heavier workloads and more intense gaming sessions.

For gamers looking to push performance even further, the device seamlessly pairs with the GT Magcharge Cooler 2.0. This external cooling and charging accessory utilizes wireless bypass charging—directing power straight into the phone’s system rather than constantly cycling through the

iACADEMY is redefining industry-driven education through its Dual-Engine Mentorship Model, an approach that combines academic instruction with direct mentorship from active, award-winning industry practitioners to create a learning environment where students are guided not only by educators, but also by professionals shaping the future of their fields.

AS Heritage Month shines a light on culture, history, and shared identity, institutions are rethinking not just what stories they tell, but how those stories are experienced. Museums, galleries, and public spaces have long relied on traditional formats, yet today’s audiences expect content that is clear, visible, and easy to understand, especially in large or high traffic environments.

The model has become one of the institution’s defining strengths, allowing students to learn from mentors whose work has gained national and international recognition across the creative and technology industries.

Audiences scan, observe, and engage at a glance. This has changed how cultural content is presented. Instead of relying solely on printed panels or static displays, institutions tasked with preserving heritage now turn to using large scale visuals to guide attention, highlight detail, and make information easier to absorb. Clear visuals help visitors connect with timelines, artworks, and historical narratives more naturally, without overwhelming the space.

Projection plays a practical role in this shift. It allows content to be shown at scale, updated when needed, and shared with more people at the same time. Whether it is a timeline of historical events, detailed artwork, or educational material, clear visuals help audiences connect with content more naturally.

Among iACADEMY’s award-winning faculty members is acclaimed filmmaker Keith Sicat, President of Directors Guild of the Philippines, Inc. and Creative Director of iACADEMY’s Vision Creative Unit , he is known for acclaimed works such as Cinemartyrs and Rigodon. across wide spaces, often under mixed lighting conditions and continuous foot traffic.

Epson supports this need with high brightness projection solutions such as the EB L30000UNL, which delivers up to 30,000 lumens. This level of brightness allows detailed heritage material—such as large scale archival images or historical maps—to be displayed clearly across walls and exhibition spaces without losing clarity to surrounding light. By enabling consistent visibility in demanding environments, Epson helps institutions present content with confidence—knowing displays will perform as intended throughout an exhibit’s run.

Award-winning filmmaker Tim Rone Villanueva continues to shape the future of Philippine cinema through bold storytelling and critically acclaimed productions. His works have garnered several awards at Cinemalaya 2025 including Best Screenplay, and now he mentors young creatives at iACADEMY on reflecting his growing impact in independent filmmaking and Filipino storytelling.

Reliability is equally important. Long running exhibits and permanent cultural installations require technology that can perform consistently over time. With a light source that offers up to 20,000 hours of operation without maintenance, Epson’s projectors are designed for continuous use, helping institutions keep displays running smoothly while managing costs and resources efficiently.

Another faculty mentor, Kenneth Peterson Leviste, was honored as the National Outstanding Young Film Director of the Year at the Saludo Excellence Awards in April 2025, recognizing his creative achievements and contributions to the Philippine film industry.

for student victory. In February 2026, two iACADEMY iNDIEGENIUS mentees were recognized among Asia’s Top 10 Best Films of 2025 by Asian Movie Pulse, marking a significant international breakthrough for emerging Filipino filmmakers nurtured under the institution’s mentorship-driven environment.

At a broader level, Epson has also taken steps to contribute to environmental conservation. The company has transitioned to 100% renewable electricity across its global sites, helping lower emissions linked to production. Projector packaging uses over 80% recycled cardboard, with additional efforts to reduce material use and improve resource efficiency.

The dual-engine effect extends beyond film into the realm of wearable technology and fashion. In October 2025, iACADEMY students Laurence Obona and Joan Mesia secured 3rd Place at the DOST–PTRI Stitch-Off: Filipiniana-Coded Design Competition for their innovative work merging technology with Filipino cultural design. The competition highlighted the growing intersection of creativity, heritage, and technological innovation, an area iACADEMY continues to actively cultivate among its learners.

“Through efficient, compact, and precise technologies and engineering that solves realworld issues, Epson has always focused on creating new value for the real world,” said Masako Kusama, President and Director of Epson Philippines Corporation. “We continue to build on our legacy by creating solutions that make content clearer and more accessible, while supporting responsible use of resources.”

As cultural institutions continue to evolve, the way stories are presented becomes just as important as the stories themselves. With clear, reliable projection, heritage is not only preserved, but also made more visible, accessible, and meaningful, allowing each generation to experience it in ways that resonate, connect, and endure.

“True mentorship isn’t about teaching students how to pass an exam; it’s about building confidence and guiding students towards success,” said Wong. “Seeing our iNDIEGENIUS mentees recognized among Asia’s best, alongside our design students winning national technological-fashion titles, is validation that our dual-engine ecosystem works. We are not just graduating students; we are preparing innovators and leaders who will make a real impact on the world.”

SHOWBIZ

Betting on today’s breakout love team

INDUSTRY insiders are increasingly pointing to JM Ibarra and Fyang Smith , otherwise known as JMFyang, as one of the next major love teams to watch in local entertainment. They even say that their staying power goes beyond typical online hype cycles.

Emerging from the digital space and quickly transitioning to mainstream film, the pair has drawn attention for their on-screen chemistry, growing fanbase, and early box-office traction. A s a result, betting on them could be a strong gamble.

As proof of their growing success is the romantic comedy film Almost Us. Asked if they expected the movie to become a commercial hit, both admitted they were more focused on pressure than projections.

“We didn’t have expectations while doing the film, the pressure was heavier. We finished it without really expecting anything,” JM said during the recent Star Magic Spotlight press conference.

Fyang echoed the sentiment, describing the anxiety that came with their first major film project and their surprise at its reported 23-million-peso opening week gross.

“If it’s your first film, you’ll really get nervous. During that time, we were talking about it and we felt a lot of pressure because there were so many expectations,”

ATASKA is taking on another adult-themed hosting project with VMX, but she said her latest special, Pinay Kamasutra, does not put her in the position of a sex expert. For the Viva artist, the project serves as a playful way to bring a usually private subject into open discussion, especially among adults who may still feel uneasy talking about pleasure.

“The good thing about my special and conversations like this is we get to talk openly about sex,” said the 24-year-old during the May 18 press conference for the special feature. “I’m not saying this is sex education, but we get to show that we shouldn’t be ashamed of pleasure.”

Pinay Kamasutra sees Ataska as host, guide, and presenter. It follows her earlier hosting stint in VMX’s Kama Sutra in 2025, though the new special stands as a separate project.

She described the show as a mix of entertainment, performance, and commentary, built around scenes from various VMX titles.

“It was a script that was given to me, and in that moment, I put myself in the character of being a sexy teacher for everyone,” she said. “It was really fun to play that character for you all.”

Ataska admitted she was not deeply familiar with the Kamasutra before doing the special.

Part of the work, she said, involved reading the script, studying the material, and finding the right tone for the show.

“It was really fun shooting it and reading about the different types of positions and describing them because, honestly, I’m not super familiar with the Kamasutra,” she said.

The actress-host also made clear that viewers should not mistake her role for that of a professional adviser. “For this special, I’m really just a host,” she said. “I’m interpreting the script that was given to me in a sexy, playful way.”

Asked about women who may still avoid such topics, Ataska said people have different levels of comfort when it comes to sexuality.

“To each their own. Not every woman would be willing to explore sexually in that way,” she said. “It really depends on the woman because all of us, or even men, have different things that turn us on.”

Still, she believes projects like Pinay Kamasutra can help lessen the shame attached to these subjects.

“We all have our ways of exploring our sexuality, and this is just one thing that could open our eyes to things like that and to not feel shame about those things,” she said.

For Ataska, the project also fits her decision to take on work outside her comfort zone. “I wouldn’t accept this project if I wasn’t ready to talk about things like this,” she said. “I want people to know that it’s okay to talk about these things because it’s human nature.”

she said in the vernacular. “We didn’t really expect it to reach that kind of number.”

Their transition from the hit digital series Ghosting to Almost Us also meant taking on more emotionally layered roles compared with their earlier work.

JM said his character RR demanded more depth and complexity.

“RR is deeper. His depth is more complicated compared to the two characters I played in Ghosting , so it was challenging. I realized the difference between film acting and TV acting,” he said.

Fyang, who played Bulots, said the role carried heavier emotional stakes compared with her previous character Janine.

“Bulots has this inner weight, a depth you don’t see in Janine in Ghosting , so it really challenged me,” she said. “Janine was more light, her only concern was her love life. Bulots, on the other hand, carries a lot of pressure in school because her mother is a lawyer and wants her to follow the same path.”

The pair credited director Dan Villegas for shaping their performances and helping them adjust to film acting.

JM recalled one of the director’s key instructions during shooting.

“It wasn’t a typical workshop. He just told me, ‘JM, it looks like you’re trying too hard, don’t try too hard.’ That’s when I realized the difference in film acting,” he said.

Fyang shared a technique she still carries with her today.

“Until now, I still remember what Direk Dan told me. Whenever there are breakdown moments, think of one box. Each box has memories. Take one box, feel the emotion from it, then close it again so you can move on,” she said.

FOR nearly two decades, Irish pop-rock band The Script has built a catalog of heartbreak anthems, emotional singalongs and inspirational hits that continue to find new listeners across generations. For frontman Danny O’Donoghue, the Philippines has played a major role in keeping those songs alive.

“We only know now after a 20-year career that these songs are sticking around. To be honest, the Philippines is the number one place where TikTok trends happen for our music,“ Danny told Manila Standard Entertainment

“The Filipino people are getting on TikTok and making these crazes and all that kind of stuff. So we’re kind of interlinked. The algorithm loves our songs because of that,“ he continued.

Known for hits such as “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved,” “Breakeven” and “Hall of Fame,” the band is set to return to the country next year for its ongoing world tour

Danny described the relationship between the band and Filipino fans as something that has grown naturally over the years.

“It feels like coming home every time. The Irish people and the Filipino people are one of a kind. We all love music, we love songs, we love karaoke. We’re kind of brothers from another mother,“ the singer shared.

He admitted that the success and longevity of the band’s songs also comes with pressure whenever he writes new material.

“Every one of those songs, I now judge my new songs by the old songs. So it can be a blessing and a curse at the same time. But to even have one thing people remember is incredible,“ Danny explained.

The singer also reflected on how age and life experience have shaped his songwriting. Now in his mid-40s and married, Danny said he writes from a different perspective compared to the band’s earlier years.

“When you’re young, you want to take on the world. Now I’m looking at cultivating a good family and having people around that you can raise kids around. I write about real stuff and I write about my life,“ he shared.

That emotional honesty continues to shape the band’s upcoming album, The Script: The User’s Guide to Being Human for release in August. Danny explained the album was inspired by questions about human connection in an increasingly technologydriven world.

“What are we doing if we’re not human beings being human?“ he said.

The project also marks a new chapter for the band following the death of guitarist Sheehan in 2023.

“Losing Mark was a massive blow to me and to the band. But with grief, you never lose it. You just grow around it,“ he stated.

The Script is set to have its Manila stop on March 18 and 19, 2027, at SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Pinay Kamasutra is now available to stream on the VMX app.

Rooftop revolution

The future of solar power in the Philippines

The future of solar power in the Philippines remains strong, but industry players say growth will depend on shifting policy support from large-scale projects toward distributed energy systems such as rooftop solar.

Most solar development in the country is still driven by utility-scale projects ranging from 300 megawatts to gigawatt levels due to ongoing supply constraints, said Junrhey Castro , managing director of Integra R.E..

“In the Philippines, most developments today are still focused on utility-scale projects because of existing energy supply challenges,” Castro said.

He noted that other markets have already expanded beyond centralized generation and are increasingly relying on distributed energy systems.

“In other countries, renewable energy is treated more as a distributed generation model rather than a single centralized source,” he said. “There is stronger support for rooftop solar because if households generate and consume their own electricity, it reduces pressure on the grid.”

Castro said wider adoption of residential and commercial rooftop solar could ease strain on the power system if supported by policy and infrastructure.

He acknowledged, however, that the shift would require changes in a system built around centralized utilities.

“We recognize this is not a simple transition given the current structure is built around utilities and centralized supply systems,” he said.

Still, he said stronger policy support for distributed generation could help address long-term energy needs.

“A stronger push for distributed generation, rather than being heavily weighted toward utility-scale projects, would be a key step in addressing the long-term energy challenge,” Castro said.

Integra R.E. unveiled its new brand identity on May 20, at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City during “Integra R.E. — Unveiling the Future of Trusted Energy,” held alongside Solar & Storage Live Philippines 2026.

The event drew strong visitor traffic and interest in solar, storage, and distributed energy solutions.

The rebrand comes as the Philippines faces recurring grid alerts and power interruptions, which have underscored the need for a more reliable and affordable energy supply.

Castro said renewable energy should be viewed not only as a sustainability measure but also as a matter of energy security and economic resilience.

“Every rooftop that can generate power and every battery that can support critical loads contributes to a stronger energy system,” he said.

Integra R.E. supplies solar modules, inverters, energy storage systems, mounting structures, optimizers, and cables and is expanding technical support services for installers, EPCs, and developers.

The company also talked about its partnerships with global manufacturers, including Huawei and JA Solar.

Castro said the company aims to support broader adoption of rooftop solar and storage systems to help improve grid resilience and energy access.

“Our success is closely tied to the success of our customers,” he said. “If more businesses gain access to reliable and cleaner energy, the economy becomes stronger.”

Scent as the new language of space

SCENT is reshaping how people experience their surroundings, turning rooms into living atmospheres rather than static settings. It moves through a space and leaves a distinct presence. Beyond decoration, fragrance becomes an invisible design element that shapes mood and gives everyday spaces a distinct emotional signature.

That idea set the tone for a star-studded weekend at SM Aura in Bonifacio Global City, where A-list celebrities, Gen Z stars, and social media personalities gathered for the Philippine launch of Europe-developed fragrance diffuser brand Hiessence.

Among those spotted at the event were Marian Rivera, Ellen Adarna, and Max Collins, alongside younger stars Seth Fedelin, Kai Montinola, and Kira Balinger. Lifestyle and television figures Tim Yap, Liz Uy, Isabelle Daza, and Kris Bernal were also present, making the launch into a full-scale celebrity gathering that drew heavy attention online.

The brand, Hiessence, was officially introduced to the local market with a showcase of its line of smart fragrance diffusers, which the company described as designed to shape ambience through scent rather than simply perfume a room.

“When we started

Hiessens, we had a simple but meaningful vision: to bring the art of scent into everything you live in,” cofounder Nice Sanchez told guests during the program. “I can honestly say I’m also part of the target market because I absolutely love home perfumes.”

Sanchez said the idea came from a shared appreciation for home environments that feel inviting and calm after a

long day.

“When my partners and I first talked about it, I was excited from the very beginning,” she said. “I knew that, just like us, there are so many people who love coming home to a space that smells wonderful.”

Speaking with Manila Standard Life during the launch party, Sanchez said the brand aims to recreate the experience of walking into a home filled with a signature

scent that shifts mood and atmosphere.

“That’s exactly what Hiessence is all about,” she said. “Every diffuser we design and every scent we curate is crafted with love and intention because we want people to experience wellness, not just through smell, but through feeling.”

Hiessence, which is crafted in Europe, positions itself as a premium home fragrance brand built around what it calls the “quiet power of scent,” focusing on how fragrance interacts with memory, space, and mood. The brand uses advanced nebulizing technology to release fine scent particles into the air, designed to operate quietly while maintaining what it describes as a balanced and unobtrusive presence in a room.

The brand traces its name to “high essence,” which the brand defines as a philosophy of refinement and reduction rather than excess, aiming to strip away unnecessary elements in both design and fragrance composition.

A LUXURY-THEMED gala marked a milestone for BingoPlus VIP Club as it celebrated its first BMW winner during its “BingoPlus Night 2026: Step into the Next PLUS” event in Manila.

The red-carpet gathering brought together VIP members, executives, and guests for an evening of entertainment and award presentations highlighting the club’s high-value player community.

The night’s centerpiece was the announcement of the first winner in the club’s ongoing BMW giveaway series, an exclusive campaign for VIP members that runs from May to September 2026 and awards one BMW each month.

As the winner received the vehicle, the moment underscored the club’s push to position itself as an experience-driven loyalty program offering premium rewards and events.

“This still feels surreal to me,” the winner said. “I never expected something this big to happen.” BingoPlus VIP Club said the initiative is part of its effort to deepen engagement with members through high-value incentives and curated experiences.

The company describes its VIP Club as a premium rewards community that offers exclusive events, travel perks, and personalized engagement for select members.
