‘Garma, two alleged hitmen to testify in Rody’s ICC trial’

Former senator Antonio Trillanes IV, in a report on “24 Oras,” said alleged assassins such as Edgar Matobato and former Davao City police o cer Arturo Lascañas are also scheduled to testify before the ICC. Matobato gained prominence after testifying before the Senate in 2016 about the alleged existence of the Davao Death Squad, which he claimed was involved in extrajudicial killings when Duterte was city mayor. Lascanas, on the other hand, earlier said the then-mayor Duterte ordered Senator Ronald dela Rosa, who was then Davao City police chief, to kidnap and bury all drug pushers in the city. DOE: 21,000 MT of LPG arriving from US to boost domestic supply

THE government has secured some 21,000 metric tons of LPG from the United States to boost the country’s supply amid tensions in the Middle East, the Department of Energy said.

DOE, in a social media post yesterday, said the shipment was secured through the Philippine National Oil Company.

“The incoming shipment, scheduled for delivery from May 20 to 31 and to be discharged in Batangas, will boost the country’s LPG inventory and strengthen supply bu ers for households and businesses,” the department said.

The procurement came days after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. temporarily suspended excise taxes on LPG and kerosene for three months.

The move is expected to reduce LPG prices by at least P3.36 per kilogram.

Earlier this week, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directed the Energy department to ensure a continuous fuel supply to prevent stagnation.

Mr. Marcos convened the fourth Unied Package for Livelihoods, Industry, Food, and Transport (UPLIFT) Committee meeting, which tackled governmentaided programs already implemented, as well as measures to cushion the e ects of the Middle East con ict.

As to the country’s fuel inventory, Palace Press O cer Claire Castro said the Philippines has a 52-day

supply as of April 21.

NBI to present findings on threats vs. First Couple in impeach hearing

THE National Bureau of Investigation will present results of its probe into the alleged threats by Vice President Sara Duterte against the First Family during the next impeachment hearing of the House justice panel on Wednesday.

NBI Director Melvin Matibag said he will be accompanied by bureau investigators who probed the alleged threats against President Ferdinand Marcos

Jr, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former Speaker Martin Romualdez.

In an online brie ng in November 2024, Duterte said she had ordered somebody to kill the First Couple and Romualdez if an alleged assassination plot against her was carried out.

Matibag such threats should not be made by anyone, adding that the investigating found “there was really a violation of the Revised Penal Code for grave threats and inciting to sedition.”

“What if the Vice President died for whatever reason? And there’s one fanatic who will say that she was killed so we should also kill the persons she named. That (threats) should not be standard,” the NBI chief said.

He said he will bring documents and video recordings authenticated by the NBI for Wednesday’s hearing. Meanwhile, Manila Rep. Joel Chua warned the

THE Philippine National Police–Aviation Security Group (PNP-Avsegroup) announced the seizure of more than P6.8 million worth of hybrid cannabis and party drug ecstasy at the Central Mail Exchange Center (CMEC) in Pasay City.

The parcels originated from Bangkok, Thailand; Phoenix, Oregon, USA; and Leusden, Netherlands, and were intended for delivery to recipients in Olongapo City and Cagayan de Oro City. They were declared abandoned at the time of

Trinidad retains AFP WPS spox after retiring

REAR Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad will continue serving as the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea (WPS) even after his retirement from active military service, the Philippine Navy said Saturday.

Philippine Navy Flag Officer in Command Vice Admiral Jose Ma. Ambrosio Ezpeleta honored Trinidad, recognizing his contributions as Naval Inspector General and as a key voice on maritime issues. Despite stepping down from active duty, Trinidad will retain his spokesperson role as a naval reservist, re ecting the Navy’s con dence in his experience and credibility.

Ezpeleta highlighted Trinidad’s role in strengthening public trust and reinforcing the country’s diplomatic posture, noting his commitment to “what is right and true.”

In his remarks, Trinidad thanked the men and women of the Philippine Navy and assured them of his continued support beyond active service. Rex Espiritu

PNP seizes P5.2m cigarettes in Iloilo raid

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) con scated over P5.2 million worth of illegal cigarettes and arrested a 38-year-old Filipina in a raid in Estancia, Iloilo, as part of its campaign against illicit trade.

The April 23 operation in Barangay Jolog was conducted by joint operatives from the Iloilo Police Provincial O ce, Provincial Mobile Force Company, Estancia Municipal Police Station, and the Bureau of Internal Revenue. Authorities said the suspect, a resident of Carles, Iloilo, was arrested for violating Section 263 of Republic Act 11467. Thousands of packs of assorted cigarette brands without required documentation and excise taxes were seized, with a total estimated value of P5,227,837.09, including penalties.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said operations against illegal trade will continue, stressing that such activities deprive the government of revenue and harm legitimate businesses. Rex Espiritu

DepEd rolls out policy orientation for teachers

THE Department of Education (DepEd) has begun nationwide policy orientations for teachers in preparation for School Year 2026–2027.

DepEd said the sessions are crucial as new reforms are set for implementation under the three-term academic calendar beginning in June.

The orientation will cover the new class calendar, including an opening block for pre-term assessments and related activities.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized that reforms must be felt in classrooms, saying teachers need to understand not just the “what,” but also the “why” and “how.” Teachers may participate remotely during their month-long break through teleconferencing or selfpaced learning, with discussions also covering revised grade computation, a strengthened Senior High School curriculum, and work immersion. The operation took place on Thursday, carried out by the PNPAvsegroup in coordination with the Ninoy Aquino International Airport–Interagency Drug Interdiction Task Group (NAIA-IADITG), which

flagged the parcels during routine cargo X-ray screening.

Subsequent K-9 inspections and manual examinations revealed 4,231 grams of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana (kush) with an estimated street value of P6,346,500, as well as 325 pink-colored tablets suspected to be ecstasy, valued at around P552,500.

The illegal drugs were concealed in various packaging to avoid detection. The successful interception was attributed to heightened vigilance and effective inter-agency cooperation.

The seized drugs underwent proper inventory and documentation procedures and are set to be turned over to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency headquarters for further investigation and appropriate action.

PNP-Avsegroup chief Brig. Gen. Dionisio Bartolome Jr. emphasized their determination to prevent illegal drugs from entering the country, highlighting the operation as a testament to the vigilance and collaboration of the Philippine National Police and partner agencies in safeguarding public health and safety.

‘Not opinion, not hearsay,’ veteran litigator says on VP records

VETERAN litigator Lorna Kapunan believes the House Committee on Justice has seen and heard enough— from discrepancies in Vice President Sara Z. Duterte’s declared net worth to flagged bank transactions—to find probable cause to impeach her.

“The House Committee on Justice has met its target to prove probable cause—that a crime was committed, that a violation of law was committed, and that the vice president is probably guilty thereof. It is not guilt beyond reasonable doubt,” she said in an interview with dzMM Teleradyo on Friday.

Kapunan also warned the public not to be swayed by the vice presi-

dent’s press releases, her defense team, or online trolls seeking to discredit the non-disclosure findings in Duterte’s Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALNs) and the Anti-Money Laundering Council’s (AMLC) report, saying no spin can change official records.

“Given the amount of evidence, follow the numbers. Let us not believe press releases, trolls, or statements outside the Committee on Justice. Let us believe in the numbers. Let the numbers speak for themselves,” Kapunan said.

“This is not fabricated by the Committee on Justice. These are official records of government agencies— the Ombudsman for the SALN, the AMLC for reporting on suspicious and

covered transactions, and the SEC for the companies of the vice president and her husband, Atty. Mans Carpio,” she added.

Kapunan explained that the panel has already presented sworn testimonies and documentary evidence during hearings that cannot be dismissed as mere opinion, stressing that the records raise legitimate questions.

“These are records—they do not lie. If we are talking about litigation, the hard evidence is already there, documentary evidence from official sources. This is not opinion. This is not hearsay. These are documents,” she said.

During the April 22 hearing, committee members noted an over elevenfold increase in Duterte’s net worth, from P7.2 million in 2007 to P88.4 million in 2024, and found she failed to report cash on hand and bank deposits under personal assets in her SALNs from 2019 to 2024.

Meanwhile, the AMLC reported that more than 600 transactions worth P6.7 billion from Duterte and her husband’s bank accounts were flagged as covered or suspicious from 2006 to 2025.

The council also confirmed that 19 bank transaction entries presented by former Sen. Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV matched its own records, including the P22 million Duterte allegedly received from Samuel “Sammy” Uy.

Kapunan said the vice president had ample opportunity to respond through an answer ad cautelam and through hearings under oath, but her defense team filed a non-answer and she has continued to skip the proceedings despite earlier invoking due process before the Supreme Court.

DMW says OFWs, their dependents repatriated

THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Saturday said 7,674 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their dependents have returned to the Philippines since the Middle East crisis broke out nearly two months ago. Of this number, a total of 7,051 were repatriated through government funding, including 5,669 OFWs and 1,382 dependents.

In a statement, the agency said the Marcos administration would sustain efforts to repatriate more Filipinos requesting to return home.

“The government continues to strengthen its repatriation and reintegration programs in line with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to ensure the safety of OFWs and support their orderly return and new beginnings in the country,” it said.

The conflict, which has spread to neighboring Gulf states, broke out when Israel and the United States mounted a joint military operation against Tehran’s nuclear sites and leadership on Feb. 28.

US envoys are traveling to Pakistan on Saturday to negotiate a peace plan with Iran aimed at ending the war.

DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac earlier said the agency would ensure the safety and welfare of Filipinos in the region and is ready in case a largescale repatriation becomes necessary. At present, he said the DMW has set up meeting points and exit points and is arranging outbound flights for repatriates.

The DMW is also coordinating with Congress on proposed measures to establish emergency funding mechanisms to better support OFWs and their families during crises.

De Lima to DFA: UN expert should probe anti-terror laws

HOUSE Senior Deputy Minority Leader Leila de Lima on Saturday called on the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to invite a United Nations (UN) expert to look into the reported abuse and misuse of the country’s counter-terrorism and terrorism- nancing laws.

De Lima of Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Party-list led House Resolution (HR) 939 urging the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), in coordination with relevant government agencies, to extend an official invitation to the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism to conduct an o cial country visit to the Philippines.

The said UN expert is mandated, among others, to promote and ensure the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the context of counter-terrorism by recommending rights-compliant legislation and policies.

“Such visit by the UN Special Rapporteur would provide an independent, expert, and comprehensive assessment of the

Philippines’ counter-terrorism and counter-terrorism nancing laws and their implementation, including their impact on civil liberties, due process, and civic space,” the resolution read.

“Such engagement would also assist Congress in the exercise of its oversight and legislative functions, particularly in determining whether amendments, clari cations, or additional safeguards are necessary to ensure that existing laws remain narrowly tailored, proportionate, and consistent with constitutional and international standards,” it added.

De Lima, a former justice secretary, said that international human rights bodies, United Nations mechanisms, and civil society organizations (CSOs) have raised grave concerns over alleged overbreadth, vague definitions, and potential for abuse of certain pro-

visions of the country’s anti-terror measures, particularly Republic Act (RA) No. 11479 or the “Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020,” and RA 10168 or the “Terrorism Financing Prevention and Suppression Act of 2012.”

The Bicolana lawmaker cited concerns over the laws’ implementation, noting that the seeming vagueness of statutory de nitions of “terrorism” and “terrorism nancing” has allegedly enabled the classification of some CSOs and their assets as “related accounts,” subjecting them to surveillance and account freezing.

Moreover, human rights organization Karapatan stated that more than 100 human rights defenders, political activists, and other dissenters have reportedly been unjustly and arbitrarily accused, indicted, or charged under the ATA and TFPSA.

NBI chief warns against politicizing trafficking case

NATIONAL Bureau of Investigation

(NBI) Director Melvin Matibag on Saturday dared the family of former Rep. Mike Defensor to keep politics out of the alleged human tra cking case. At a news conference, Matibag said that the circumstances surrounding Defensor’s political affiliations should not be used as an excuse to avoid answering the allegations.

“Let us not bring this into politics, and do not say that I went after your family because of politics. You put your name there. You put your family

in that business,” he said.

The NBI on Friday announced that it has led charges against Julie Tactacan-Defensor, chairman of Zerrin Development Corporation, along with her son Miguel, who are linked to Bleu Hotel in Pasig City.

A total of 54 women were rescued by the NBI in an entrapment operation inside the Chicago Nightclub, where alleged human tra cking and illegal drug trade activities were reported.

Matibag said the operation on Tuesday was conducted with other parties to ensure that none of their o cers would abuse their authority.

MMDA, local gov’t units develop anti-littering guidelines

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is working with local government units to develop the guidelines necessary for the comprehensive implementation of an anti-littering policy in the National Capital Region.

MMDA General Manager Nicolas Torre III said the campaign aims to enhance environmental cleanliness and promote responsible waste disposal practices among residents.

“The full implementation of the policy is expected next week, while guidelines and coordination with local government units are still being nalized,” he said.

The MMDA will catch violators of anti-littering regulations through the use of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras strategically installed across Metro Manila.

Torre said the primary objective of the initiative is to address the persistent problem of litter on public streets and in waterways, where the agency reports collecting as much as seven tons of waste.

He added that the use of technology will enable a faster and fairer accountability process for individuals who violate the regulations. “We are using technology to make enforcement fair and consistent,” he said.

Meanwhile, the MMDA demonstrated the capabilities of the Metrobase Command Center, which houses monitors for more than 500 CCTV cameras, including AIpowered units used for real-time monitoring and detection of violations of the No Contact Apprehension Policy (NCAP).

The agency’s Hotline 136 was also tested, with a target response time of

He said the former lawmaker should have considered the welfare of the employees if they had foreseen the risks of the alleged trafficking activities.

“Let us not exploit our poor countrymen by bringing them into illegal activities,” the NBI chief said, adding that grounds for sexual exploitation are present in their investigation.

Defensor earlier slammed the operation, saying it had singled them out on three occasions, resulting in the layo of a total of 1,000 employees.

“There is so much work for the

NBI—why raid nightclubs? Almost 1,000 workers were affected. Why would they do that in the middle of a crisis?” he said in an interview over One News.

He asserted that the family relinquished control of the hotel in 2019, seven years before the KTV bar located below the establishment was raided.

“We gave that up in 2019. We have records to show that. All of that was already turned over to the new group. It may have been registered under our name, but we are no longer involved,” the ex-congressman added.

EDSA-Ortigas yover lane reopened to tra c after re

A SECTION of the EDSA-Ortigas yover in Mandaluyong City gutted by fire has been reopened to tra c, with the southbound lane now passable, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said Saturday.

The DPWH–National Capital Region reported that engineers from its Planning and Design Division, along with district representatives, conducted an assessment and cleared the lane for public use.

“The southbound lane of the Ortigas flyover has been cleared and is now passable to tra c,” the agency said.

The inspection was ordered by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. after a public utility bus caught re on the yover Friday evening, raising concerns about structural safety. However, the DPWH said a more detailed inspection of the EDSA–Ortigas Interchange is ongoing to determine the extent of the damage and evaluate its structural integrity, as authorities recommend limiting access to light vehicles while further testing continues.

UC o ers int’l internship, high-paying careers for tourism

CEBU CITY— The University of Cebu (UC) has nalized its international internship program in partnership with Dreamark TW, linking tourism students to training opportunities in Taiwan’s hospitality industry.

UC chairman Augusto Go said the initiative expands the university’s e orts to provide global exposure, with 300 initial slots bene ting some of its 800 graduating hospitality and tourism students.

“This is not the rst time we’ve sent students abroad,” Go said, citing previous programs in Europe, the United States, and Southeast Asia, adding that Taiwan’s proximity makes training more accessible to families.

According to Dreamark TW legal counsel Christopher San Pedro, students may undergo six months to one year of on-the-job training in partner hotels, gaining hands-on experience in various hospitality operations.

Participants may receive a monthly allowance of about NT$29,500 (around P50,000), with possible employment opportunities after completion, as demand for Filipino hospitality workers in Taiwan remains strong. Minerva Newman

US envoys head to Pakistan for Iran peace negotiations

Islamabad – US envoys headed to the Pakistani capital Saturday to kickstart a new round of peace negotiations with Iran, although Iranian state media said Tehran’s envoys had no immediate plans to hold face-to-face talks.

As Steve Witko and Jared Kushner set o for Islamabad, the White House said they would hold an “inperson conversation” with Iranian representatives.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Islamabad on Friday and met Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan’s army chief and a key gure in the country’s mediation e orts. The pair appeared together in a brief video posted by Tehran’s embassy.

Sealing a deal to end the Middle East war remains a thorny proposition, even as urgency mounts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital conduit for the world’s oil and liqueed natural gas (LNG).

White House Press Secretary

Karoline Leavitt said Witko and Kushner would be in Pakistan “to engage in talks... with representatives from the Iranian delegation.”

“The Iranians reached out, as the president called on them to do, and asked for this in-person conversation,” Leavitt said, adding that the talks would “hopefully move the ball forward toward a deal.”

Leavitt said Vice President JD Vance, who led a rst round of negotiations in Islamabad two weeks ago, would not be joining for the time being, but was on “standby to y to Pakistan if necessary.”

It remained unclear whether the Iranian side would meet directly with the US envoys.

Chinese panda pair headed to US zoo as part of conservation deal

TWO giant pandas from China are headed to Atlanta on a new 10-year conservation deal.

Pandas Ping Ping, a male, and Fu Shuang, a female, will live at Zoo Atlanta, China Wildlife Conservation Association said in a statement Friday.

The organization signed the research agreement with the United States zoo last year, it said, noting the deal continues “the ‘panda bond’ shared by the people of both nations for more than 20 years”.

The panda pair come from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in southwestern Sichuan province, according to the statement.

No formal charges, however, have been filed against the two.

Former Department of Public Works and Highways undersecretary Roberto Bernardo earlier testified before the Senate Blue Ribbon panel that he personally delivered 20 percent of about P800 million worth of flood control projects in Valenzuela to Ngu, allegedly on behalf of Escudero.

Escudero earlier refuted the allegations of Bernardo, who has since become a state witness in the flood control scam cases.

“By his own admission, he never had any contact with me directly regarding this matter—and I will prove that he is lying about my alleged involvement,” Escudero said.

Ngu likewise denied Bernardo’s claim that he acted as a bagman for then Senate President Escudero.

“I absolutely deny all the allegations made by Usec. Bernardo,” Ngu said, adding that he had already filed a case against the former DPWH official for defamatory insinuations.

the zoo’s president Raymond B. King said in a statement.

“We can’t wait to meet Ping Ping and Fu Shuang.”

The zoo welcomed its rst giant pandas Yang Yang and Lun Lun when they arrived in 1999.

That pair produced seven cubs over a 25-year agreement before returning to China with their two youngest in 2024, when that deal expired.

The US side has prepared for Ping Ping and Fu Shuang’s arrival by renovating their habitat to make it “more comfortable and more safe,” the Chinese association said.

Some 471,000 barrels of fuel were delivered to the country, with conrmed orders of one million barrels out of two million barrels that PNOC has been tasked to procure.

As this developed, the Energy department called on power consumers to help save electricity by joining the hour-long Oras Natin sa E ciency (ONE) from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. every week.

“In the current state of national emergency, ONE is aimed to encourage our citizens to be part of the solution,” DOE Energy Utilization Management Bureau Director Patrick Aquino said.

He said about 145 megawatts were saved during the Earth Hour on March 28, enough to power approximately one million households.

Araghchi has no plans to meet with the Americans, and Islamabad would serve as a bridge to “convey” Iranian proposals.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry said Araghchi had arrived in Islamabad to discuss “ongoing efforts for regional peace and stability” with Pakistani o cials, without directly referencing talks with Witko and Kushner.

An Iranian spokesman said Araghchi would later visit Oman and Russia to discuss efforts to end the war, which was launched against Iran by Israel and the United States on February 28.

Tehran’s defense ministry, in a statement carried by news agency ISNA, said “the enemy is looking for a face-saving way to escape the war quagmire it has become trapped in.”

Since the last round of talks, efforts to bring the two sides back to the table have hit an impasse, with Iran refusing to participate as long as a US naval blockade on its ports remains in place.

Iran has imposed a de facto blockade of its own on the Strait of Hormuz, allowing only a trickle of ships to pass through the vital waterway, throwing global energy markets into turmoil.

Oil prices slid on Friday amid hopes that fresh peace talks would see an end to Tehran’s disruption of trade through the strait.

European Council President Antonio Costa said the strait “must immediately reopen without restrictions and without tolling.”

“This is vital for the entire world,” Costa said.

On Thursday, US President Donald Trump announced a threeweek cease re extension in Lebanon and spoke in glowing terms of peace prospects for the country after meeting with Israeli and Lebanese envoys. He voiced hope for a three-way meeting with Lebanon and Israel’s leaders.

1st female Anglican head to meet Pope

NEW Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally, the first woman to lead the world’s Anglican Christians, heads to Rome and the Vatican this weekend for an audience with Pope Leo XIV.

Mullally will meet the head of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics during a four-day visit starting Saturday, her first abroad since being enthroned last month as the Church of England’s top cleric.

The audience comes 60 years after a historic meeting in 1966 between then archbishop Michael Ramsey and pope Paul VI, the rst at that level since the Church of England was created in the 16th century, when king Henry VIII broke with Rome.

Relations have been steadily improving since although in 2016 their successors noted “new disagreements,” particularly on the ordination of the women – making Mullally’s visit a signi cant moment.

He also rejected the notion of a “reward system” for police o cers.

“We are proud to make Filipino programs and movies accessible to as many Filipinos as possible with this partnership,” said Samsung Electronics Philippines president Roman Han, noting the company’s push to accelerate digital content adoption through its wide device base.

MediaQuest Holdings president and CEO Victorico “Ricky” Vargas said the tie-up supports the company’s push to expand across platforms and formats.

“This allows us to bring high-quality content to millions of Filipinos and meet them where they are,” he said.

Both companies expressed optimism that the collaboration will set

Leading the delegation in Manila is Miguel Ángel Valverde, provincial president of Ciudad Real and head of FENAVIN, the Feria Nacional del Vino or Spanish Wine Fair. With him are 12 wineries from his home province, part of a broader effort to connect with Philippine importers and position Spanish wines more firmly in Southeast Asia.

“We have come to show what FENAVIN is and the possibilities it offers for Spanish wine,” Valverde said.

Held every two years in Ciudad Real, FENAVIN has become the main commercial platform for Spanish wine. It brings together nearly 1,000 wineries and close to 1,900 labels, drawing buyers from around 100 countries.

“For us, it is important that FENAVIN is known in all corners of the world. We want buyers and distributors from every country to come,” he said, as the Spanish wine sector gears up for the next edition of the fair in May 2027 in Ciudad Real.

The Manila visit, he said, is about laying the groundwork early. The goal, he added, is “to meet Filipino importers, invite them to experience the fair, and hopefully build business together.”

Question of value

Spain’s pitch rests on a familiar trio

A relatively new wine producer, Bodegas Aruspide, joins the Manila promotion and networking event.

large cooperatives, the province offers a broad mix of producers, grape varieties, and winemaking processes.

Spain produces roughly 40 million hectoliters of wine each year. About half comes from Castilla-La Mancha, and Ciudad Real alone contributes a significant share.

- quality, price and variety - but each is backed by scale and depth. Producers argue their wines match the standards of traditional European rivals such as France and Italy, while remaining priced competitively alongside Chilean and Australian labels.

That positioning is supported by a broad portfolio that spans multiple grape varieties, styles and appellations, allowing buyers to source across different price points and taste profiles.

“We have nothing to envy from other producers,”Valverde said, referring to European peers such as France and Italy. “Our quality is the same, sometimes even superior.”

He explained how Ciudad Real’s geographical location delivers an expansive line of wines, from still wines, sparkling, specialty wines, and special categories like organic, biodynamic, natural or low alcohol, Pago, Kosher, D.O., and Vino La Tierra.

“We could say that around 25 percent of Spanish wine comes from our province,” he said, adding that exports are a significant part of the business, with Ciudad Real generating about €600 million in overseas sales.

Younger markets

Even with global reach, producers are adjusting their strategy as export conditions become more uncertain.

Valverde cited tariffs and trade tensions, especially in the United States, as among the pressing concerns. He said this is pushing the sector to diversify its markets, noting that “the current global situation makes exports more difficult” and that producers are now “looking for new markets that can compensate.”

Southeast Asia is part of that strategy. Countries such as Vietnam, Thailand and South Korea are seeing rising interest in wine, particularly among younger consumers. The Philippines, while still an early-stage market, stands out for its long-term potential.

Ciudad Real sits at the center of Castilla-La Mancha, widely regarded as one of the world’s largest wine-producing regions and home to the biggest concentration of vineyards anywhere. From family-run estates to

Wine consumption remains relatively low, but the category is gaining visibility in restaurants and specialty stores. For Valverde, that is an opportunity rather than a limitation.

“It is still a juvenile market, but that means there is more room to grow. And we want to be part of that growth,” he said, citing cultural familiarity as a subtle advantage given the historical ties between Spain and the Philippines.

The longer-term outlook depends in part on trade policy, with Spain’s wine sector watching developments in Latin America and Asia. For now, the work is more immediate, meeting buyers, pouring samples, and building relationships.

For Spanish producers, the Philippines represents a market still being shaped, where habits are changing, and preferences are forming.

“We are very happy to be here, not only to talk about our wines, but also about our culture and our identity. When you open a bottle of wine, it brings people together. We believe that can also help build new relationships in markets like this,” Valverde said.

‘Marvelous Cup’ billiards at Pacman’s Cue Club

THE STAGE IS set for the Mar velous Cup Invitational, a three-day cue sports tournament scheduled from April 30 to May 2 at Pacman’s Cue Club along Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong City.

The event will feature three divisions catering to different skill levels, with a to tal prize pool of P150,000. Each division champion will take home P50,000, underscoring the tourna ment’s competitive stakes.

Organizers have prepared a profes sional-level playing environment, high lighted by 18 tournament-grade tables fitted with Simonis 860 worsted wool cloth to ensure speed and consistency. All matches will be played under strict World Pool Association (WPA) 10-ball international rules, maintaining global standards of play.

FArevalo takes on Europe’s fairways

ILIPINA golfer Abegail “Abby” Arevalo is set to ignite her May campaign on the Ladies European Tour (LET) in Germany, carrying the Philippine flag as the lone Filipina in a landmark 2026 season.

She opens a demanding three-country swing at the Amundi German Masters, scheduled from May 14 to 17 at Green Eagle Golf Courses. At 27, Arevalo arrives with renewed purpose, embracing the precision and strategic demands of Europe’s layouts after three seasons on the Epson Tour—choosing the challenge of unfamiliar fairways over the comfort of regional circuits.

The competition will follow a double-elimination format, giving players a second chance through the challenger’s bracket. This structure allows participants who suffer an early loss to fight their way back into contention and reach the finals. The tournament opens on April 30 with Division 1 for beginners (Class D, rated 1.5 to 2.5). Action continues on May 1 with Division 2 for intermediate players (Class C, 3.0 to 4.5), before culminating on May 2 with Division 3 for advanced competitors (Class A/B, 5.0 to 9.0). On the same day, the final eight players across all divisions will compete for their respective titles. An entry fee of P2,200 will be required for each participant. To preserve fairness and competitive balance, all entries will undergo strict evaluation by the official PCC Handicap Committee, ensuring accurate classification of players. With limited slots available and brackets filling up quickly, interested participants are encouraged to secure their spots by contacting the organizers or tournament director Benjie Guevarra.

Blending competitive intensity with professional conditions, the Marvelous Cup Invitational is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated cue sports events on the local calendar.

Following the German leg, the Parañaque-raised golfer will travel to Morocco for the Lalla Meryem Cup at the Royal Golf Dar Es Salam from May 21 to 23. She will conclude the month in France at the Jabra Ladies Open, hosted by the Evian Resort Golf Club from May 28 to 30.

“Golf is 90% mental,” Arevalo said, noting that being the lone Filipina on the tour requires a specific brand of psychological toughness. “If there isn’t a seat at the table, you should bring your own chair—or, in this case, your own clubs.”

Beyond the tournament schedule, Arevalo is launching a digital initiative to provide fans with an inside look at the life of a touring professional. This includes real-time updates via her Instagram account, @abegailgolf, and the debut of an official YouTube channel in June.

The platform will focus on the “lonely grind” of international competition, featuring travel vlogs and technical tutorials.

The 2026 campaign coincides with International Women’s Month, with Arevalo aiming to improve the visibility of Filipino athletes in global golf while pursuing a personal goal of Olympic qualification.

Melmac Sports opens in Imus, unleashes a new era of greatness

A NEW arena for ambition has arrived in the south. Even before its official grand launch, Melmac Sports has begun drawing athletes, enthusiasts, and industry insiders eager to experience what could become Cavite’s premier sporting hub.

Tucked inside Vista Mall Imus, the 3,500-square-meter complex is more than just another recreational space—it is a carefully built environment where performance, community, and accessibility meet.

The facility opened quietly this week, welcoming members of the media, professional athletes, commentators, and key figures from the local sports scene, along with partners from the Villar Group. The gathering felt less like a soft opening and more like a statement: Cavite is ready to play on a bigger stage. At the center of it all is Mel Macasaquit, whose decades-long jour-

ney in sports marketing laid the foundation for what now stands as Melmac Sports.

“This is more than just a place to play,” Macasaquit said. “This is life. We live and breathe sports.”

His résumé stretches across some of the Philippines’ most recognizable sports programs, including collaborations with Gilas Pilipinas, the Azkals, and the country’s 3x3 Olympic Quali-

fying Tournament campaign. But Melmac Sports, he says, is his most personal project yet.

Designed with both elite athletes and everyday players in mind, the facility blends professional-grade infrastructure with a welcoming atmosphere. It features a FIBA-approved full 5-on-5 basketball court, a FIBA 3x3 halfcourt, and dedicated pickleball courts—three currently operational, with more on the way. A standard tennis court is also in the pipeline.

Complementing the playing areas is a sports-specific gym, drawing from Macasaquit’s past collaboration with Gold’s Gym, and tailored for conditioning, recovery, and performance training.

Still, Melmac Sports is not positioning itself as an exclusive training ground.

“It’s not just for hardcore athletes,” Macasaquit emphasized. “It’s also for casual players—people who simply want to move, play, and enjoy sports in a world-class environment.”

That balance—between high performance and inclusivity—appears to be central to the facility’s vision. Beyond competition and training, the complex also integrates lifestyle elements. It houses the second branch of Planet MelMac, a concept first introduced in Singapore, blending comfort food with a sports-centric atmosphere. The brand, Macasaquit revealed, is set to open for franchising in the coming months.

Expansion is already underway. Plans for additional Melmac Sports facilities in key Villar Group locations are expected to begin within weeks, signaling a broader ambition to redefine access to quality sports infrastructure across the country.

For Macasaquit, however, the mission goes deeper than bricks and courts.

“This is bigger than just facilities,” he said. “It’s about building a home—for athletes, for dreamers, for everyone who believes in the power of sports.”

VinFast VF6 proves EVs go further—delivers real-world performance beyond city driving

AS ELECTRIC vehicles continue to gain traction in the Philippines, questions remain around their ability to go beyond city driving. VinFast Philippines addressed this through a recent two-day test drive, where the VinFast VF6 demonstrated its performance, efficiency, and practicality across realworld road conditions.

Mounted from April 16 to 17, the VinFast VF6 Test Drive brought together media outlets and key opinion leaders (KOLs), giving close to 60 participants the opportunity to experience the vehicle from VinFast Caloocan to Lakehall at Nena’s Sanctuary in Laguna.

Spanning city roads, expressways, and traffic-heavy conditions via Skyway and SLEX, the drive was designed to reflect how Filipinos actually move—daily commutes, long drives, and everything in between.

Built for Real-World Driving, Not Just the City

Rather than a controlled demonstration, the test drive was designed to reflect how Filipinos actually drive—combining city traffic, expressway cruising, and long-haul conditions across the route from Caloocan to Laguna.

Different segments of the drive allowed participants to engage key features of the VF6 in context. Along the Skyway, drivers were able to activate adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and highway assist, enabling smoother, more controlled driving even at higher speeds. These features reduced driver fatigue while maintaining consistent speed and lane positioning over extended stretches.

As the convoy transitioned into SLEX and more congested areas, traffic jam assist and responsive braking systems came into play, helping drivers navigate stop-and-go conditions with greater ease. The shift between open roads and heavy traffic highlighted the VF6’s ability to adapt seamlessly, maintaining both performance and control across varying environments.

By integrating these features into real driving scenarios, the experience reinforced that the VF6 is built not only for city commutes, but for the full range of everyday driving conditions in the Philippines.

Performance and Efficiency That Work Together

What stood out throughout the drive was the VF6’s ability to deliver consistent power while maintaining energy efficiency. Equipped with a 210-horsepower electric motor, the vehicle provided smooth and responsive acceleration, allowing drivers to navigate traffic and overtake with confidence while maintaining stability across changing road conditions.

This balance was further reflected in an internal,

unofficial test run conducted under similar real-world conditions. With an average of three to four passengers per vehicle, the VF6 traveled approximately 70 to 80 kilometers from Caloocan to Lakehall in Laguna. Units began the drive with an average battery level of around 69% and arrived with approximately 57% remaining charge—demonstrating efficient energy consumption even with variations in driving style, passenger load, air conditioning use, and performance modes.

At the same time, battery performance remained steady across multiple runs, reinforcing the VF6’s capability to handle both daily commutes and longer drives without the need for constant charging. Even with real-world variables at play, the vehicle maintained a consistent and manageable rate of consumption, supporting its practicality for everyday use.

Charging further supports this practicality. The VF6 can charge from 10% to 70% in approximately 25 minutes, with VinFast estimating a full charge at under ₱900 and running costs at around ₱1.95 per kilometer, offering a more accessible and manageable approach to EV ownership.

Designed for Confidence, Comfort, and Everyday Use

Beyond performance, the VF6 is built to make electric driving more intuitive and accessible. Its quiet operation, seamless acceleration, and user-friendly interface make it easy to adapt to, even for drivers experiencing an EV for the first time. Media and KOL participants noted the smooth and refined driving experience, highlighting how quickly they were able to feel comfortable behind the wheel.

A suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) further enhances confidence on the road. Features such as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and a 360-degree camera were tested across different segments of the drive, helping

Inside, the VF6 combines functionality with connectivity.

A 12.9-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with multiple smart features, ensures that drivers remain connected and in control throughout their journey.

A Practical EV for Everyday Filipino Driving

The VF6 ultimately makes a strong case for electric vehicles as a practical, everyday solution. With a driving range of up to 480 kilometers (NEDC), it is capable of supporting not just short city trips, but also longer drives across key routes. More importantly, the recent test drive demonstrated that this capability holds up under real-world conditions where traffic, road variability, and driver behavior all come into play. By combining performance, efficiency, and ease of use, the VF6 addresses many of the common concerns surrounding EV adoption. It shows that drivers do not need to sacrifice power for efficiency, nor convenience for sustainability. Instead, it offers a balanced approach that aligns with how Filipinos actually drive. As VinFast continues to expand its presence in the Philippines, the VF6 stands out as a smart, everyday EV—one that makes the transition to electric mobility more practical, more accessible, and more relevant for Filipino drivers.

Signs of heatstroke in cats and what to do as first aid

HEATSTROKE in cats is a serious and potentially lifethreatening condition that requires immediate attention. Cats, like humans, can suffer from overheating when exposed to high temperatures, especially during hot weather or in environments lacking proper ventilation. Recognizing the signs of heatstroke early and knowing how to provide first aid can make a critical difference in your cat’s health and survival.

Understanding Heatstroke in Cats

Heatstroke occurs when a cat’s body temperature rises above the normal range, typically surpassing 104°F (40°C). This elevated temperature triggers widespread inflammation and can cause damage to vital organs such as the brain, kidneys, and liver. According to the article "Heatstroke in Cats: Signs, Treatment, and Prevention" by PetMD, heatstroke is not just about feeling hot; it is a systemic condition that can rapidly escalate to organ failure if not treated promptly. Cats are particularly vulnerable because they do not sweat like humans and rely mainly on panting and grooming to cool down. However, these mechanisms can be insufficient during extreme heat or if the cat is confined in a hot space without access to water or shade.

Recognizing the Signs of Heatstroke

Early recognition of heatstroke symptoms is crucial. The article "Heatstroke in Cats: Emergency Steps" by the Garden

State Veterinary Specialists highlights several key signs that indicate your cat may be overheating:

• Panting or rapid breathing: Unlike dogs, cats rarely pant, so panting is a significant red flag.

• Restlessness or agitation: Your cat may appear uncomfortable and try to find cooler places.

• Excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth: This can indicate distress.

• Bright red or purple gums: This discoloration signals poor oxygen circulation.

• Vomiting or diarrhea: These symptoms may be accompanied by blood in severe cases.

• Weakness or collapse: In extreme cases, your cat may become lethargic or lose consciousness.

The PetMD article also notes that cats may groom excessively in an attempt to cool themselves, which can be an early but often overlooked sign. Sweaty paws and reduced urine production are additional indicators of heat stress.

Immediate First Aid for Heatstroke in Cats

If you suspect your cat is suffering from heatstroke, immediate action is necessary to prevent further harm. The Garden State Veterinary Specialists article outlines a clear step-by-step approach for first aid:

1. Move your cat to a cooler environment: Bring your cat indoors or into the shade immediately to stop further heat exposure.

2. Start cooling your cat gradually: Use cool (not cold) water to wet your cat’s fur, focusing on the paws, belly, and head. Avoid ice-cold water or ice packs, as rapid cooling can cause shock.

3. Provide fresh water: Encourage your cat to drink small amounts of water to help rehydrate, but do not force water if your cat is unconscious or vomiting.

4. Use a fan or air conditioning: Increasing airflow can help lower your cat’s body temperature.

5. Monitor your cat’s temperature: If possible, use a rectal thermometer to check if the temperature is dropping toward the normal range (around 100.5°F to 102.5°F).

According to the PetMD article, it is essential to avoid overcooling, which can lead to hypothermia. Cooling should be steady and controlled.

When to Seek Veterinary Care

First aid is only the initial step. Heatstroke can cause internal damage that requires pro-

Is guava safe for dogs?

GUAVA is a tropical fruit with a sweet flavor, fragrant aroma, and good nutritional profile. But as a dog owner, you might wonder if guava is safe for dogs to eat. As some have already tried, yes, guava can be safe for dogs when given in moderation and prepared properly. However, like many human food, there are important considerations to keep in mind before sharing this fruit with your furry companion.

Nutritional Benefits

of Guava for Dogs

Guava is rich in vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants, all of which can benefit a dog’s overall health. These nutrients help support the immune system, promote good digestion, and may even contribute to healthier skin and coat. Because of its natural sweetness, guava can also serve as a healthier alternative to processed dog treats that are often high in artificial ingre-

dients and preservatives.

According to Dr. Emily Carter in “Can Dogs Eat Guava?” published in the Paws & Nutrition Daily, guava can be a good occasional snack for dogs.

“Guava is packed with nutrients that can support a dog’s immune system, especially vitamin C, which plays a role in reducing inflammation and boosting overall wellness,” she explains.

While dogs naturally produce their own vitamin C, small amounts from fruits like guava can still provide an added benefit.

Despite these advantages, guava should never become a staple in a dog’s daily diet. One of the main concerns is its sugar content. Although the sugar in guava is natural, excessive intake can lead to weight gain, digestive upset, or even contribute to long-term issues like diabetes. Dogs with pre-existing conditions, particularly obesity or blood sugar problems, should only consume guava under veterinary guidance.

Proper Preparation Matters

Another important factor to consider is preparation. The seeds and rind of the guava can be difficult for dogs to digest and may pose a choking hazard, especially for smaller breeds. It is best to peel the fruit, remove all seeds, and cut it into small, manageable pieces before offering it to your dog. This minimizes the risk of gastrointestinal discomfort or blockage.

fessional medical treatment. The Garden State Veterinary Specialists emphasize that after administering first aid, you should take your cat to a veterinarian immediately. Signs such as persistent vomiting, seizures, difficulty breathing, or unresponsiveness indicate severe heatstroke and need urgent care.

Veterinarians may provide intravenous fluids, oxygen therapy, medications to control seizures or inflammation, and supportive care to protect organ function. Early intervention improves the prognosis significantly.

Preventing Heatstroke in Cats

Prevention is always better than cure. The PetMD article stresses the importance of keeping cats in a cool, well-ventilated environment during hot weather. Never leave your cat in a parked car or confined space without airflow. Provide plenty of fresh water and shaded resting areas. If your cat spends time outdoors, ensure they have access to shelter and avoid the hottest parts of the day.

Additionally, be mindful of cats with thick fur, older cats, or those with underlying health conditions, as they are more susceptible to heat stress.

Heatstroke in cats is a dangerous condition that can escalate quickly without prompt recognition and treatment. Knowing the signs—such as panting, restlessness, drooling, and changes in gum color—can help you act swiftly. Immediate first aid involves moving your cat to a cool place, gradually cooling their body, and providing water, followed by urgent veterinary care. According to the article "Heatstroke in Cats: Emergency Steps" by the Garden State Veterinary Specialists and the comprehensive guide from PetMD, understanding these steps can save your cat’s life.

By staying vigilant during hot weather and taking preventive measures, you can protect your feline friend from the risks of heatstroke and ensure they remain healthy and comfortable all year round.

The art of senses:

Relive irresistible moments with Oreo ice cream

HAVE you ever had a moment when you encounter something – maybe a thought, a scent, a flavor, or another sensory cue–that gives that quick flush of giddy feeling? There’s a certain magical quality to these moments when we get transported into a different time in the past, making the present seem just a little sweeter.

Science backs this phenomenon, too. According to an article from Psychology Today, the habit of intentionally recalling positive memories results in greater happiness and satisfaction levels. They also help boost our appreciation of the present, proving that bridging both can do wonders for our mood.

One of the most powerful ways to spark these feelings is through sensory experiences; a specific flavor or taste that anchors us to that moment and bridges us to the present. That quick giddy feeling can be best summarized as “kilig.”

Think of the classic Oreo cookie, for example. For generations, us Filipinos have grown up

AFAMILIAR story takes on a new form at Conrad Manila, where a weekend dessert buffet draws from Alice in Wonderland and translates it into a spread built as much around design as it is around taste.

Called “Wonderland Reverie,” the setup at Brasserie On 3 runs like a series of chapters, each station tied to a moment or character from the book. The result is a dining experience that leans into both visuals and flavor, inviting guests to move through it at their own pace.

Executive chef Nicolas de Visch said the concept began with a simple idea that grew through collaboration.

“This journey started about two months ago when we designed the whole buffet. The team has done an amazing work of creativity and ingenuity to come up with a buffet like that,” he said.

Rather than following a strict menu format, the team built the spread through brainstorming, mapping out themes first before deciding what dishes would best represent them.

“It’s really thinking about the design and then adapting the food to the design,” De Visch explained. That approach is clear from the moment guests arrive. The Victorian Garden Party begins with lighter pastries like madeleines and tea cakes. The Mad Tea Party then moves on to richer, more complex desserts. As you continue, Down the Rabbit Hole explores contrast by combining sweet flavors with savory ones, such as maple bacon cupcakes.

Chocolate dominates The Red Queen’s Court, where pralines and rose-inspired creations anchor the station. A savory pause comes in between through “Frabjous,” a mix of hot and cold items that includes smoked tomato cappuccino and salmon blinis, giving the spread a break from sugar-heavy selections.

For the executive chef, the balance was intentional.

“I haven’t got a sweet tooth,” he said, not ing that the buffet also needed options that would appeal to those who prefer something less sugary.

The experience is arranged loosely accord ing to the story’s progression, though diners are free to approach it however they like.

“It is being placed on your arrival according to the chapters of the book. But it’s really all about the way you want it,” he said.

More than just a lineup of desserts, the buf fet reflects the team’s attempt to turn a lit erary reference into something interactive. Visual cues—from playing cards to characterinspired pieces—are woven into the stations, while some elements, like liquid nitrogen ice cream prepared on-site, add a sense of move ment to the spread.

Running on weekends from mid-afternoon, the buffet is positioned between lunch and dinner, encouraging guests to drop in, sample, and linger rather than commit to a full meal.

“It’s a fantastic dessert option. You can come in and just graze,” De Visch said.

Available until July 31, the offering is de signed for both casual visits and small gather ings, where the focus shifts from simply eating to moving through a themed experience, one plate at a time.

Kenny Rogers Roasters rolls out its Tropical Mango meals

AS MORE diners look for meals that strike a balance between indulgence and everyday wellness, Kenny Rogers Roasters answers with its newest offering: the Tropical Mango lineup.

Building on the popularity of its Mango Habanero range, this new lineup takes a different direction by dialing down the heat and leaning towards a more balanced flavor profile.

At the center of the collection is a tropical mango salsa with ripe mangoes, tomatoes, onions, and parsley designed to complement, rather than overpower, the natural richness of Kenny Rogers’ famous roasted chicken and grilled salmon.

For Frederick T. Siy, President and CEO of Kenny Rogers Roasters, the launch signals a continued evolution in how the brand approaches menu innovation.

“At Kenny Rogers Roasters, innovation means taking what we already do best and making it even more exciting. The Tropical Mango lineup

is a perfect example of this—we are introducing bold, playful flavors that delight the senses while staying true to our ‘I Love Me Better’ promise. Our goal is to make food that is memorable, satisfying, and fun to enjoy,” he said.

SOME songs naturally find their way into summer playlists—not because they mention the beach or vacations, but because they carry that same easy, light feeling people look for this time of year. There are songs for sunny afternoons and songs for the quiet hours after. The best playlists know how to hold both without trying too hard. Here are five OPM tracks worth adding to the playlist.

SCROLL through your feed and you’ll probably notice it. Selfies look a little different now—less posed, less dramatic, and a lot more relaxed. There’s a new go-to expression taking over, and people online call it the Gen Z pout.

is the new digital selfie signature Gen Z pout

That’s exactly why it works.

It’s not as obvious as older selfie trends. No tightly pursed lips, no exaggerated angles, no overly serious stare. The Gen Z pout is much softer—slightly parted lips, a calm face, and that in-between expression that looks almost accidental. It gives the impression that the photo just happened, even when it probably took a few tries.

The Gen Z pout matches how people post today. Quick mirror selfies, outfit shots, café snaps, random photos with friends—these moments don’t really need a full pose. A softer expression feels more natural and fits the casual vibe better. It looks effortless, even if there’s still some effort behind it.

It also goes well with the way beauty trends have been changing. Heavy contour, bold matte looks, and super polished makeup are no longer the default for everyone. Many young people now lean toward lighter makeup, fresh skin, and a look that feels more real than perfect. The selfie

DONSOL may look effortless in photos—clear waters, whale sharks, fireflies—but for Xia Vigor, seeing it up close made clear how much work goes into protecting a place like it.

The 16-year-old actress marked Earth Day with her first field visit to one of WWF-Philippines’ conservation sites, giving her a closer look at how environmental work happens on the ground. Vigor, the youngest celebrity ambassador of WWF-Philippines, joined a butanding tour during her visit. In Donsol, whale shark tourism follows rules meant to protect the animals and their habitat while still helping sustain local livelihoods.

She also took part in a firefly cruise that highlighted the role of mangrove forests in protecting coastal communities and supporting biodiversity. Mangroves help guard against stronger storms and rising sea levels, store carbon, and provide habitat for various species. Fireflies, often seen in healthy mangrove areas, are also considered a sign of a balanced ecosystem.

For Vigor, the trip changed how she viewed places often reduced to travel content online.

“On social media, we usually just see the clear waters of the ocean, the cool marine animals, and

expression follows that same idea.

Compared to older trends like the duck face, the difference is easy to see. The duck face was meant to stand out. It was bold, exaggerated, and impossible to miss. It belonged to a time when selfies were louder and more performative. The Gen Z pout takes the opposite route. It doesn’t ask for attention. It just quietly works.

Across Instagram stories, TikTok dumps, and casual photo posts, the shift is easy to spot. There are fewer exaggerated poses and more laid-back expressions. Even group photos feel less staged now. People seem less focused on

Vigor

who’s serving the same purpose as me. It’s such a great opportunity,” she said.

After the trip, Vigor said she felt more motivated to keep using her voice to encourage others to care for the environment.

“After this experience, I personally feel more committed to speaking up and influencing others. Change isn’t just about one person; it’s about getting more people involved—getting more people to act and protect the planet,” she said.

looking perfect and more interested in looking comfortable.

Of course, no selfie trend is completely effortless. The right angle still matters. Lighting is still checked. Sometimes the “casual” look takes longer than expected. But the goal feels different now. It’s less about looking overly polished and more about looking like yourself on a good day.

The Gen Z pout may be subtle, but that’s what makes it stick. It doesn’t try too hard—and maybe that’s exactly why everyone is doing it.

FOUR graduating engineering students from Eastern Visayas State University developed a solar-powered electric pump boat for tourist transport in the Sohoton area of Basey, Samar, offering a less costly alternative to fuelpowered rides in one of the province’s known ecotourism destinations.

The project was developed by Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering students Antonio Adorza Jr., Mac Jandy Guintadcan, Brian Jeffrey Reyno, and Richard Reynada, who later turned over the boat to the community-based group at the Wespal Sohoton Visitor Center & Eco-Lounge.

Their prototype, titled Design and Implementation of a Solar Electric Pump Boat for Tourist Transportation in Sohoton, Basey, Samar, uses four 100-watt solar panels connected to a 48-volt battery system that powers a 1,500watt electric motor.

For the team, the project was meant to answer a practical need in a place where tourism depends on river transport.

“One of its biggest advantages is that it doesn’t rely on fuel. It’s quiet, clean and environmentally friendly,” Reyno said in an interview with PNA’s Sarwell Meniano.

That matters in Sohoton, where pump boats are part of the visitor experience. A solarpowered version cuts noise and avoids carbon emissions, making it a better fit for an area

known for its caves, river routes, and natural scenery. The boat also responds to the problem of rising fuel prices, which continue to affect transport operators.

“This is a big help to us, especially now that fuel prices are high,” said Beatriz Boleche , a leader of the Sohoton Services Cooperative.

“The integration of solar into our service motorboat reduces our dependence on gas.” EVSU School of Engineering dean Vinyl Oquiño said the university hopes to present the project in research conferences and exhibits while seeking support from agencies such as the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Tourism, along with public and private partners, to help develop it further.

LIFE Good

The New Self-Care Standard:

Know the Six Essential Cancer Screens

EVERYONE will agree that prevention is key to living long and well.

It is unfortunate that most Filipinos no longer undergo regular checkups after doing so during their childhood years. And they only do so when they are forced by disease to see a medical practitioner.

Cancer is ranked as the second leading cause of death in the country, with lung, breast, and liver cancers topping the list, according to 2022 data of the Philippine Statistics Authority.

Healthway Cancer Care Hospital (HCCH), the country’s first dedicated cancer hospital, is making essential cancer screenings more accessible through preferential rates until May 14, 2026.

Six essential cancer screens are being offered by the Ayala-led hospital under AC Health. The promo is open to all. The package does not include a doctor’s consultation except for Liver and Prostate screening tests. The offer cannot be combined with other discounts, such as senior citizen or PWD discounts and it is only applicable to self-pay transactions and not valid for thirdparty payors (HMO, Insurance, or Corporate accounts.

1. Breast Cancer Screening

Early-stage breast cancer is often highly treatable — especially when detected before symptoms appear.

Ageing Gracefully

AGEING gracefully comes from a release—from the unclenching of a jaw, from a slow outbreath, from the agreement that you are separate from the demands of an overly anxious society. If you are able to realize that you are sovereign and move in your own time and space, then truly, you are ageing gracefully because your days unfold according to your own rhythm, and no one else’s.

If you are able to free yourself from the fear of dying, or better yet, from the fear of living, and are able to carve out a little corner in the world doing the things that you love not for the sake of paychecks or performance but for the sake of your self, then you are not only ageing but living oh so gracefully. If you can pause the relentless ticking of time by the practice of stillness, so you can connect with your body and your mind and allow the stagnant (or persistent!) thoughts and energy to gently dissipate, then you have learned what it means to stay in the present. Now, you can stop time. While many chase after the proverbial fountain of youth, I find it more beneficial to seek out the fountain of truth. Throughout the most awkward of my life experiences, I have always tried to extract the lesson, to befriend the pain, to come out disheveled but more fully alive than ever. Aging gracefully has always looked, to me, like a wise old woman, hair long and white, wrinkles serving as a map to a life well lived, a body well connected to the earth. To me, she is like a massive tree, grounded and strong, fruits and flowers a-bloom and falling around her everywhere. While others try to fill their heads with knowledge, I am constantly trying to keep mine empty. I’ve learned the value of keeping only what holds true for me at the present moment. This is how I’m able to make time pass slower, especially when I’m with my kids (who are undoubtedly growing up too fast) or when I’m basking in the beauty of a sunset. Besides, if you pay attention, you’ll find that opinions and ideas are everchanging anyway and attachment to any one of these may lead to inflexibility.

observant of your surroundings.

There is always something new to behold. Fresh perspectives are a gift to those who choose to walk. Wonder and curiosity are also faithful companions of those who take the scenic routes (and ageing has no chance when accompanied by these two). Have a practice. Find an interest or two that you can engage in mind, body and soul. Do it faithfully. Not perfectly, but faithfully. Let this be your playground, your personal space, your little world. And when you’re ready, kindred spirits will come out of their hiding and connections will begin to form. A community may be born, and from here, things greater than yourself will begin to materialize (aka miracles). And miracles are a sign of a world so mysterious and magical that aging becomes an honor and not a burden.

Who it’s for:

lWomen aged 40 and above for routine mammography (annual or biennial, based on risk and physician guidance)

lWomen aged 21–39 for clinical breast evaluation, with ultrasound if clinically indicated

lEarlier imaging for those with a strong family history or hereditary risk

lContinued routine mammography beyond age 50 remains important, based on individual risk and physician guidance.

What to expect: Breast ultrasound and/or mammography, depending on age and risk profile.

How to prepare: Avoid deodorants, powders, or lotions on the day of the exam. Wear a twopiece outfit for convenience.

2. Cervical Cancer Screening

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when screening is consistent.

Who it’s for:

lWomen beginning at age 30 under local clinical guidance

lCytology (Pap smear) every 3 years or HPVbased testing as appropriate

lContinued screening through age 65, depending on prior results

lEarlier evaluation if clinically indicated

What to expect: A Pap smear or HPV-based screening test to detect early cellular changes.

How to prepare: Avoid vaginal medications, douching, or intercourse 24–48 hours prior. Schedule outside of menstruation if possible.

3. Colorectal Cancer Screening

Colorectal cancer often develops quietly. Screening interrupts that trajectory.

Who it’s for:

lAdults beginning at age 45

lAnnual FIT testing, or colonoscopy every 10 years (or as clinically indicated), depending on individual risk and physician guidance

lEarlier screening if there is a first-degree family history

Screening is typically continued through age 75, depending on overall health.

What to expect: Colonoscopy or stool-based testing depending on the chosen pathway.

How to prepare: For colonoscopy, follow prescribed bowel preparation and arrange transportation due to sedation.

4. Lung Cancer Screening (Eligible High-Risk Individuals Only)

For eligible individuals, annual low-dose CT can significantly improve early detection rates.

Who it’s for:

lAdults aged 50–80

lWith a 20 pack-year smoking history or more

lCurrent smokers or those who quit within the past 15 years

What to expect: Annual low-dose CT scan under established eligibility criteria.

How to prepare: No special preparation required. Remove metal objects before the scan.

5. Liver Cancer Surveillance (High-Risk Individuals Only)

For high-risk individuals, consistent liver surveillance can detect changes early — often before symptoms surface.

Who it’s for:

lIndividuals with chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, or advanced liver disease

lScreening typically involves ultrasound ± AFP testing every 6 months

Routine liver cancer screening is not recommended for average-risk individuals and should only be done under physician guidance. What to expect: Blood panel and/or imaging depending on clinical risk.

How to prepare: Usually no fasting required but confirm with your provider.

6. Prostate Cancer Screening

Prostate cancer screening typically begins with a PSA-based discussion with your doctor, with testing recommended where appropriate.Who it’s for:

lDiscussion may begin at age 50

lAs early as age 45 for high-risk individuals

lEarlier conversation for those with strong family history

What to expect: PSA-based screening discussion and blood test if appropriate.

How to prepare: Avoid strenuous exercise 24–48 hours prior. Inform your physician of recent infections or procedures.

When Screening Should Start Earlier

Earlier or enhanced screening may be indicated for individuals with:

lConfirmed BRCA1 / BRCA2 genetic mutations or hereditary cancer syndromes

lStrong family history of cancer (especially first-degree relatives)

lChronic liver disease

lAutoimmune or inherited metabolic conditions

Screening timelines are not one-size-fits-all — they are personalized decisions guided by risk and medical history, according to HCCH. More information on the preferential rates offered by HCCH at www.healthwaymedicalnetwork.com.ph

‘Live Lighter’ movement debuts with Novo Nordisk obesity drug

NOVO Nordisk, the pharmaceutical company behind Ozempic, launched an obesity awareness campaign last Friday to officially introduce to the Philippines its weight management drug Wegovy.

The initiative promotes a shift from viewing obesity as a personal responsibility to recognizing it as a chronic and complex disease influenced by biological, environmental and other underlying factors.

“We have studied obesity not as a lifestyle issue, but as a chronic disease.

Through Live Lighter, we aim to help Filipinos treat obesity right, with science, compassion, and with the support they deserve,” said Wei Sun, General Manager of Novo Nordisk Philippines, during the event held at the Manila Peninsula in Makati City.

Medical experts at the launch said persistent stigma and misconceptions about obesity often delay diagnosis and limit access to effective, evidencebased treatment.

Recognizing obesity as a disease, they said, can enable earlier intervention, more comprehensive care and improved long-term health outcomes.

Data from the Epidemiological Burden and Cost of Obesity in the Philippines study estimated that obesity costs the economy about Php 1.9 trillion in 2025, equivalent to 7.3% of gross domestic product, and could reach Php 2.7 trillion when overweight-related conditions are included.

“Advancements like these are changing the way we approach obesity care. They allow us to address

the biological drivers of the disease, giving patients a more realistic and sustainable path toward better health,” said Dr. Christiana Vida Montefalcon, head of Clinical, Medical, Regulatory & Pharmacovigilance of Novo Nordisk Philippines. The Wegovy prescription therapy is based on semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist designed to regulate appetite, energy intake and metabolic processes. This medication may cause mild to moderate gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation that usually improve over time.

Wegovy should only be used by adults with obesity or overweight with related conditions under medical supervision, and it is not recommended for individuals with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2, or known hypersensitivity to semaglutide.

“When we treat obesity right, we change lives, not just for individuals, but for families and communities. That is the impact we hope to

“Live Lighter is more than a campaign. It is a commitment to change the way obesity is understood and managed in the Philippines. By bringing science based care, including innovative treatments, closer to patients, we hope to empower more Filipinos to take control of their health in a sustainable and medically guided way,” added Sun. Beyond treatment, the movement underscores the need for collective action across sectors to address obesity more effectively—from improving public understanding and reducing stigma to strengthening healthcare systems and expanding access to care.

“Addressing obesity requires more than awareness. It requires a shift in mindset across healthcare, policy, and society,” said Anand Shetty, vice president for Novo Nordisk Business Area Southeast Asia. “With Live Lighter, we are working to move from stigma to science, and from fragmented efforts to a more coordinated, patient-centered approach to care.”
