Iran targets world’s energy supplies as Mideast war enters third week

EXPLOSIONS rocked cities across the Middle East on Saturday as the US embassy in Baghdad was hit by a drone strike and Tehran warned Emiratis to stay away from ports as it targets the world’s energy supply lines. Washington’s embassy in Iraq was hit for the second time since February 28, when the United States and Israel attacked Iran and plunged the Gulf into a conflict that has sent shockwaves through the global economy. Waves of drone, missile and aerial bombing have displaced millions in the

region and reportedly killed more than 1,200 people in Iran.

Despite facing superior US and Israeli firepower, Iran appears determined to fight on, launching missile and drone attacks against at least 10 of its neighbors and effectively barring the choke point Strait of Hormuz to sea traffic. Iran had threatened US-linked oil and energy firms would “immediately be destroyed and turned into a pile of ashes” if the US struck its oil facilities, according to Iranian media.

Suspension of fuel excise tax likely within 2 weeks

THE public can expect relief from rising fuel prices by around P6 to P10 per liter within the next two weeks with Congress poised to pass a measure allowing the President to suspend or slash excise tax of petroleum products, House Committee on Public Accounts chairman Terry Ridon said.

Ridon said the House of Representatives is almost done with the bill, which is expected to be

THE Senate Blue Ribbon Committee is investigating a list of flood control and other infrastructure projects allegedly proposed by a member of Commission on Appointments in exchange for the confirmation of then DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan in late 2022.

Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson, who chairs the committee, made the announcement on Saturday, saying the information surfaced while he and his staff continue to inspect suspected anomalous flood control projects in other parts of the country.

passed by the Senate by the end of next week.

“Approval is just a matter of

time…As big as P10 per liter can be shaved off the price of petroleum products after the excise taxes have been suspended. So, this is a big thing and hopefully within the next two weeks our countrymen will be able to benefit from this intervention,” he said.

“Giving power to our President to reduce, suspend, remove excise taxes on petroleum products

“We received information that during a CA hearing for Bonoan’s confirmation as DPWH secretary, the confirmation process was used for such a transaction,” he said in a radio interview. The information, he added, came from former DPWH Undersecretary Roberto Bernardo. Lacson also said he is validating the information from Bernardo that the one who made the “request” to Bonoan was from the House of Representatives panel at the time.

The senator said his team continues to check flood control projects including those in Metro Manila – including one where the flooding situation got

worse after a pumping station was built there.

“If the project turns out to be substandard or ghost, that would mean new recommendations by the Blue Ribbon Committee for the proper agencies to build cases against those involved,” he said.

As this developed, Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is determined to resolve all anomalous flood control projects, including filing of cases against erring government officials before the Office of the Ombudsman.

is unprecedented. It has not been done even in the past because last time there was still a three-month grace period to remove, suspend excise taxes on petroleum products,” Ridon added.

The lawmaker was referring to the provision of the existing law allowing presidential intervention only if the three-month average of crude prices exceeds $80 per barrel.

This waiting period was removed in the pending bill, Ridon said.

Subpoenas eyed on VP, husband’s tax and business records – Ridon

LAWMAKERS may seek subpoenas for the income tax returns and business records of Vice President Sara Duterte and her husband, lawyer Manases Carpio, House Committee on Public Accounts chairperson Terry Ridon on Saturday said.

He said this was to explain what he described as an allegedly roughly P50-million gap between the Vice President’s cumulative government salary and her declared net worth. Ridon, a lawyer and member of the House Committee on Justice, raised the issue during a media forum while discussing possible financial records that may be sought by the House Committee on Justice as it continues processing the two remaining impeachment complaints against Duterte.

PH to cooperate in US probe into forced-labor goods

THE Philippines will monitor and cooperate in the United States’ investigation into Manila’s alleged failure to ban the import of goods produced through forced labor, Malacañang said on Saturday. This came after the US Trade Representative (USTR) launched a probe under Section 301 (b) of the US Trade Act of 1974 to determine whether the Philippines and 50 other trading partners have effectively banned the import of goods produced using forced labor.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the Philippines takes note of Washington’s ongoing investigation.

“We will closely monitor and actively participate in the investigation to address the concerns of the United States,” Castro said.

Solons welcome anti-dynasty law public support

TWO lawmakers have welcomed the latest Pulse Asia survey showing that 64 percent of Filipinos support the passage of an anti-political dynasty law.

Perci Cendaña of Akbayan Party-list, a principal author of the Comprehensive Anti-Political Dynasty Law under House Bill 5905, said the strong public support should serve as a wake-up call for Congress to pass the measure.

He said Congress has delayed the legislation for nearly four decades despite the constitutional mandate to prohibit political dynasties.

Cendaña said he hopes lawmakers will act with urgency but ensure that the law faithfully reflects the spirit of the Constitution and the aspirations of the Filipino people.

Cendaña, along with fellow Akbayan Rep. Chel Diokno, Rep. Dadah Ismula, and Kaka Bag-ao of Dinagat Islands, authored the proposed Comprehensive Anti-Political Dynasty Law.

The four lawmakers earlier withdrew their signatures from the House Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms’ committee report, saying it failed to genuinely consolidate the various anti-dynasty bills filed in the House.

Among the key provisions of the Akbayan measure are the prohibition of dynastic relationships up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and affinity, a ban on political dynasties within the party-list system, and a prohibition on the succession of relatives in public office.

Senior Deputy Minority Leader Leila de Lima echoed the call, saying the Constitution clearly provides for limiting or banning political dynasties.

She warned that passing a law that legitimizes political dynasties would be a disservice to the Filipino people.

De Lima urged lawmakers not to deceive the public by passing a measure that would keep power concentrated in a few families instead of the people.

She also called for dismantling political dynasties that enrich only a few families instead of benefiting the country.

2nd batch of repatriated Filipinos arriving Sunday

MALACAÑANG on Saturday announced that a second batch of Filipinos repatriated from the Middle East is set to arrive on Sunday, as authorities continue efforts amid heightened regional tensions.

Presidential Communications Office Acting Secretary Dave Gomez said the flight carrying overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) will arrive at Ninoy Aquino International Airport at about 6:35 a.m. on March 15.

The repatriates are scheduled to arrive aboard a chartered flight operated by Philippine Airlines, flight PR8502, departing from Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.

Gomez said government agencies will be on standby at the airport to assist the returning Filipinos and facilitate their travel back to their home provinces.

The second batch follows the first group of repatriated Filipinos on March 5, when a flight from Dubai, United Arab Emirates brought home workers who opted to return to the country amid ongoing tensions.

The Philippines has long maintained contingency plans for large-scale evacuations of OFWs, particularly in the Middle East, where an estimated two million Filipinos are employed in sectors such as construction, health care, and domestic work.

Meanwhile, Singapore helped evacuate 24 overseas Filipino workers from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, by

Biazon to summon Maynilad execs over water concerns

MUNTINLUPA City Mayor Ruffy Biazon has once again summoned the top management of Maynilad Water Services Inc. to explain the service interruptions affecting the city.

In two letters dated March 11, Biazon asked for a meeting with the concessionaire’s senior management to present a plan to address the water outages.

The letters were addressed to Maynilad President and CEO Ramoncito Fernandez and Chief Operating Officer Christopher Lichauco.

“It is lamentable that Maynilad is unable to properly inform its customers about the service interruption in a timely, efficient, and effective manner,” Biazon said. “Residents of Muntinlupa are caught off guard and are unable to prepare.

The uncertainty of service restoration also causes undue stress, inconvenience, and lost productivity.”

Biazon also urged compensation for customers affected by the water interruptions.

“At the least, there should be a rebate to

providing seats on a repatriation flight originally deployed to bring stranded Singaporeans home following airline disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East.

The evacuation was carried out by the Republic of Singapore Air Force, which deployed an Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft to bring Singapore nationals home from Jeddah.

After Singaporean citizens and their families were accommodated, the remaining seats on the aircraft were offered to foreign nationals affected by travel disruptions, including the 24 OFWs.

“This was very much a partnership. We worked in close coordination with the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah to facilitate the Filipinos who joined the flight,” Singapore

customers who have been deprived of the quality of service Maynilad is obligated to deliver to the people,” he said.

The mayor also criticized the water provider’s lack of coordination with the local government.

“Government itself is not spared from this failure to communicate by Maynilad. We are also in the dark about what is going on, which forces us to initiate contact instead of Maynilad proactively engaging the local government,” he said.

Biazon noted that the water interruptions are occurring even as Maynilad operates two water treatment plants along Laguna de Bay.

While the company deploys water tankers for emergency distribution, Biazon said the effort is insufficient to support all affected subscribers.

Last month, Biazon held a town hall meeting with Maynilad officials following the water interruptions. The company attributed the service issues to operational challenges at its treatment facility.

Ambassador to the Philippines Constance See said, adding that the flight landed in Singapore on March 13 at 5:59 a.m.

The ambassador said Singapore’s evacuation mission complemented Manila’s efforts to bring its nationals home safely, describing the move as an example of cooperation among Southeast Asian countries during emergencies.

“Singapore and the Philippines are close friends, and we were very glad to help these Filipinos begin their journey home. At the end of the day, what matters most is that people return safely to their families,” See said.

“This is really ASEAN solidarity in action, neighbors helping neighbors in difficult moments. Our ASEAN neighbors have assisted Singaporeans in returning home in past crises,” she added.

A TOTAL of 52,000 individuals have been affected by the ongoing unrest of Mayon Volcano, according to the Office of Civil Defense on Saturday.

Data from the agency showed the figure represents 13,807 families across nine municipalities and 65 barangays in the Bicol Region. The OCD said minor strombolian activity was observed at the volcano at around 5:24 a.m. Saturday. Such activity refers to low-level, intermittent volcanic explosions.

In a Facebook advisory, the agency urged residents to remain alert, stay cautious, and follow the warnings and instructions of authorities.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue has shut down an online selling operation in Cebu for failing to declare more than P211 million in sales.

The closure order was implemented on March 12 under the BIR’s Oplan Kandado program following an investigation by the agency’s Regional Investigation Division in Central Visayas. Authorities said the operation stemmed from a joint probe with the National Bureau of Investigation after receiving information that an online seller was offering luxury goods through Facebook Live and other platforms without issuing receipts or registering with the BIR. Surveillance and tax verification linked the business to locations in Mandaue City and Cebu City. Records seized during the operation showed gross sales exceeding P211 million.

The BIR estimated the seller’s minimum tax liability at P40.4 million and said it is preparing tax assessments and possible charges under the Run After Tax Evaders program, according to Commissioner Charlito Martin Mendoza.

PH, Singapore seek stronger cooperation in trade, energy

THE Philippines and Singapore have expressed their intent to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, and key industries like artificial intelligence (AI) and clean energy, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on Saturday.

Mr. Marcos made the statement after meeting with Singaporean Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong at Malacañang Palace in Manila on Thursday.

In a Facebook post, President

Marcos said he and the Singaporean leader discussed ways to enhance economic collaboration between the two countries.

“I had a productive meeting with Singapore Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry

Gan Kim Yong on how the Philippines and Singapore can work more closely in trade, investment, and emerging industries such as artificial intelligence and clean energy,” he said.

Mr. Marcos noted that expanding cooperation in key sectors could help boost economic activity and open more opportunities for Filipino workers and businesses.

He also emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships as the region works toward greater economic integration.

He said closer collaboration be-

tween the Philippines and Singapore supports efforts to build a more competitive and dynamic Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region.

Mr. Marcos said deeper economic ties would help the Philippines prepare for future industries while promoting sustainable growth.

“As ASEAN works toward a more integrated and competitive region, closer cooperation between our countries helps strengthen our economy, create more opportunities for Filipinos, and keep the Philippines ready for the future,” he said.

PDEA seizes P95m worth of shabu in Surigao port operation

AN interdiction operation launched by drug enforcement agents at a port in Surigao on Saturday resulted in the seizure of some P95 million worth of methamphetamine hydrochloride, or shabu.

Operatives of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Regional Office 13 (PDEA RO 13), through the Seaport Interdiction Unit–Surigao led by IA III Paul Pestelos, spearheaded the operation at around 4:45 a.m. at Lipata Port in Barangay Lipata, Surigao City.

IN BRIEF

The operation was carried out in close coordination with several law enforcement and maritime agencies, including the PDEA Surigao del Norte Provincial Office, Surigao Component City Police Station, 1st Surigao del Norte Police Mobile Force Company, Philippine Ports Authority Port Police, Maritime Police Surigao del Norte, Regional Intelligence Unit 13 PIT-SDN, Coast Guard Station Surigao del Norte, Coast Guard Sub-Station Lipata, Coast Intelligence Group–Northeastern Mindanao, Coast Guard K9 Team Lipata, Criminal Investigation

and Detection Group Surigao del Norte Provincial Field Unit, and the Surigao del Norte Police Drug Enforcement Unit.

During the operation, the PDEA said authorities arrested a 23-yearold drug courier who is a resident of Napindan, Taguig City. Confiscated from the suspect were fourteen packs of suspected shabu with an estimated total weight of about 14 kilograms and a standard drug value of P95,200,000. Also recovered during the operation were a metallic gray Toyota Hilux, one Android cellphone, and a

AFP to conserve fuel, assures uninterrupted security operations

THE military is implementing energy conservation measures in response to rising fuel prices while ensuring that essential security operations continue without disruption, the Armed Forces of the Philippines said Saturday.

Rear Adm. Roy Vincent Trinidad, Philippine Navy spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, said guidance from Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is to conserve fuel and electricity.

The military will adopt measures such as carpooling and holding some meetings

remotely, similar to arrangements during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trinidad assured the public that essential defense and security missions—including patrols in the West Philippine Sea—will continue despite rising fuel prices.

He also said the AFP is studying the possible adoption of a four-day workweek for administrative units while maintaining regular patrols and monitoring of any illegal presence in Philippine waters. Rex Espiritu

Dy hails teachers as ‘pillars of society,’ backs classroom plan

FAUSTINO Dy III on Saturday hailed Filipino teachers as the “pillars of society” and reaffirmed the government’s push to accelerate the construction of classrooms nationwide to support quality education.

Dy delivered the message as guest of honor during the 21st founding anniversary of the Schools Division Office of Cauayan City on March 13, where educators and stakeholders gathered to celebrate more than two decades

of service to the local education sector.

Addressing teachers, Dy thanked them for shaping the country’s youth and strengthening communities, saying their work helps ensure a strong and stable future for Filipino students.

He also stressed that building the nation’s future is a shared responsibility among teachers, parents, and the broader community.

Baguio temperature drops to 9°C as cold season ends

BAGUIO City—Residents and tourists in this mountain resort city wore thicker clothes or stayed in bed early Saturday after temperatures suddenly dropped, signaling the final wave of the cold season.

Data from the local office of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration showed the temperature fell to 9°C at around 5 a.m., lower than the 13.4°C

recorded during the previous three days. The coldest temperature recorded in January was 10.6°C, while February’s lowest reading was about 11°C.

Weather authorities said the chilly conditions were caused by the enhanced northeast monsoon, which is now on its final phase as the country transitions toward the summer season. Dexter See

‘CA may be held liable if it amends Marcoleta remarks’

THE Commission on Appointments (CA) might face legal liability if it amends the minutes from its February 4 hearing involving Senator Rodante Marcoleta’s statement concerning the Kalayaan Island Group.

Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson said Article 170 of the Revised Penal Code imposes penalties for the falsification of legislative documents, emphasizing that this was the reason he issued a warning against such actions during his privilege speech on March 10. Marcoleta faced criticism for his statement “give up the Kalayaan Island Group.”

“Falsification of legislative records is punishable under Article 170 of the Revised Penal Code. That is why we must carefully study the legal implications. As of now, Marcoleta’s motion to amend his remarks is still pending,” Lacson said.

“I have relayed this concern to Senate President Vicente Sotto III because he is also the CA chairman. We must be careful lest we be charged with falsification of legislative records and be implicated as co-conspirators if we approve the amendment,” he added.

For now, Lacson said Marcoleta’s motion to amend a portion of the records has been referred to the CA Committee on Rules for analysis. Article 170 of the Revised Penal Code covers the falsification of legislative documents. Under it, prision correccional in its maximum period and a fine of P6,000 shall be imposed upon any person who, without proper authority, alters any bill, resolution, or ordinance enacted or approved or pending approval by either House of the Legislature or any provincial board or municipal council.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier certified as urgent House Bill 8418, or the proposed “Act Authorizing the President of the Philippines to Suspend or Reduce the Excise Taxes on Petroleum Products During National or Global Economic Emergencies.”

Under the bill, the President may exercise the authority only upon recommendation of the Development Budget Coordination Committee and in coordination with the Secretary of Energy, and only if one of two conditions is present.

The first trigger is when the Dubai crude oil price, based on the Mean of Platts Singapore, reaches or exceeds $80 per barrel for one month immediately before the order to suspend or reduce is issued.

The second trigger is when there is a declared state of national emergency or calamity and it results in extraordinary increases in domestic pump prices, as certified by the Secretary of Energy, establishing a formal basis for action beyond ordinary market movements.

As this developed, the Department of Trade and Industry issued a stern warning to retailers against hoarding essential goods and profiteering amid global uncertainties fueled by the ongoing Middle East crisis.

DTI Secretary Cristina Roque said the agency will not tolerate illegal trade practices that exploit consumers. Under the Price Act (Republic Act No. 7581) and other relevant statutes, the government is prepared to strictly enforce penalties against violators, she said.

Roque said illegal price manipulation carries heavy sanctions to deter market exploitation, including imprisonment up to 15 years for those found guilty and fines reaching as high as P2 million.

“The law provides us with the tools to ensure that essential goods remain accessible and fairly priced for every Filipino family,” she said.

South Korea says Pyongyang fires about 10 ballistic missiles after drills

SEOUL – North Korea fired about 10 unidentified ballistic missiles toward the sea of Japan Saturday, Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said, days after Pyongyang warned of “terrible consequences” over South Korea-US military drills.

Pyongyang recently dashed hopes of a diplomatic thaw with South Korea, Washington’s security ally, describing its latest peace efforts as a “clumsy, deceptive farce.”

Seoul’s military detected “around ten unidentified ballistic missiles launched from the Sunan area in North Korea toward the East Sea at around 1:20 pm (0420 GMT),” the JCS said in a statement.

Japan’s defense ministry also confirmed the launch, saying on its official X account that “what is possibly a ballistic missile was launched from North Korea.”

The announcement came hours after South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok said that US President Donald Trump thinks a meeting with Pyongyang’s leader Kim Jong Un would be “good.” Washington has for decades led efforts to dismantle North Korea’s nuclear program, but summits, sanctions and diplomatic pressure have had little impact.

The Trump administration has pushed in recent months to revive high-level talks with Pyongyang, eyeing a possible summit with Kim Jong Un this year, potentially during

Trump’s April visit to Beijing.

Seoul’s Kim, who met Trump in Washington, said the US president told him that meeting Kim Jong Un would be “good” and the meeting could potentially happen during Trump’s visit to Beijing that begins later in March.

Trump said during a trip to Asia in October that he was “100 percent” open to meeting with Kim Jong Un, a remark that went unanswered by the North.

After largely ignoring those overtures for months, Kim Jong Un recently said that the two nations could “get along” if Washington accepted Pyongyang’s nuclear status.

Last month, Pyongyang’s leader Kim said North Korea had “absolutely no business dealing with South Korea, its most hostile entity, and will permanently exclude South Korea from the category of compatriots”.

Hamas urges Iran to stop ‘targeting neighbors’ in war vs. Israel and US

GAZA CITY – Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on Saturday called on Iran to refrain from targeting neighboring countries, while affirming Tehran’s right to defend itself against Israel and the United States.

“While affirming the right of the Islamic Republic of Iran to respond to this aggression by all available means in accordance with international norms and laws, the movement calls on the brothers in Iran to avoid targeting neighboring countries,” Hamas said in a statement.

“As instructed by President Marcos himself, we will continue to pursue all cases against erring officials and continue referring cases before the Office of the Ombudsman,” said Dizon during a Kapihan ng Samang Plaridel forum.

Dizon said the government has already filed graft and corruption charges against more than 40 individuals, including some 20 DPWH officials.

“We will not just be doing a subpoena on the SALNs and bank transactions of Vice President Duterte and Atty. Mans Carpio. We will also undertake subpoenas on the income tax returns of the couple, income tax returns, bank returns, and SEC registration of all the businesses that have been listed in the SALN of the Vice President for 2023 and 2024,” he said. Ridon said the documents are necessary to verify the sources of wealth declared in Duterte’s Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN), noting that her declared net worth had increased significantly over the years.

Hamas, which fought a devastating two-year war with Israel in Gaza, also called on the international community to “work towards halting” the ongoing war immediately.

The group previously condemned the killing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, on the first day of the war as a “heinous crime,” openly acknowledging his longstanding support for the Palestinian movement.

“He provided all forms of political, diplomatic and military support to our people, our cause, and our resistance,” the movement said soon after the kill-

“What we are doing now along Maharlika Highways is just a temporary short-term solution as we want our travelers to have smooth travels this Holy Week,” he said.

“Current projects now are re-blocking, only a few segments left. We need to finish the works before Holy Week,” Dizon said.

After Lent, the more comprehensive

He said Duterte’s SALN showed a net worth of around P7,250,497 in 2007, which rose to P88 million in 2024.

He said Duterte’s cumulative salary from government service between 2007 and 2024 would only amount to roughly P30 million to P40 million.

“What needs to be explained by the Vice President is the gap between P30 million to P40 million and the P88 million net worth that has been submitted in 2024,” Ridon said.

Earlier this week, Kim Yo Jong, a powerful confidante of her brother Kim Jong Un, said the joint drills “may cause unimaginably terrible consequences.”

She went on to say the drills were taking place at “a critical time when global security structure is collapsing rapidly and wars break out in different parts of the world.”

She said the situation is caused by “the reckless acts of the outrageous international rogues.”

President Donald Trump earlier said Friday US forces had hit Iran’s Kharg Island, its biggest oil export hub, and “obliterated” military targets while sparing its energy facilities. Iranian media confirmed there was no damage to oil facilities on the island. Trump said the US Navy would start escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz“very soon”to restore oil exports.

Filipinas find financial footing through digital credit

THE Philippines has made steady progress in closing the gender gap in financial access over the past decade, with the number of women holding formal financial accounts rising significantly.

But as financial services increasingly shift online, a digital divide remains. Recent data show that only 59 percent of Filipino women have used mobile money, compared with 71 percent of men, underscoring persistent gaps not only in access but also in financial tools tailored to women’s needs.

Financial technology company Tala says addressing this gap requires more than simply bringing services online. It also means making credit and digital financial tools accessible to women who often manage both household responsibilities and income generation.

Women account for about 62 percent of Tala’s user community in the Philippines. Many use the platform’s loans to support small businesses, manage household expenses or invest in opportunities that strengthen their financial stability.

In Cagayan de Oro, Ailyn turned to Tala when her husband’s sudden illness placed pressure on the family’s finances. At the time, she was studying to become a caregiver while managing their home. With a Tala loan, she started a small food stall to help cover medical bills and daily expenses, eventually expanding the venture into a sari-sari store.

“I used the loan wisely to keep the capital rolling,” Ailyn said. “Even if I’m a housewife taking care of my children, I still want to have my own income.” The small business now provides steadier earnings and has allowed her to begin saving for her children’s education.

For Mitch, a single mother, the journey began with using loans to cover everyday expenses and stay on top of bills. Over time, she focused on improving her credit standing while saving toward a long-term goal of buying a home for her family.

Her efforts eventually allowed her to secure additional funds to purchase a house. Mitch has since worked on improving the property herself, creating separate rooms for her children and cultivating a small garden. “Tala was the first thing that came to mind to help me reach my goal,” she said.

In Baseco, Manila, Berla took a similar path after facing difficulty finding stable employment. She used a Tala loan to establish a sari-sari store, purchasing groceries and other goods to build her inventory.

To supplement the business, Berla also transports goods across Manila Bay by boat. “I can’t just rely on the store alone as a single stream of income,” she said. Women driving mill-to-meal journey of Aboitiz Foods

IN THE fast-paced world of food and agribusiness - long perceived as a maledominated sector - the journey from mill to meal is increasingly shaped by women bringing strategy, scientific expertise, and leadership to the table.

This Women’s Month, Aboitiz Foods is highlighting these contributions through its campaign “HERstory: The Women Who Make Things Happen,” celebrating female leaders across the food value chainfrom research laboratories and farms to boardrooms and markets.

Taking its cue from the International Women’s Day theme “Give to Gain,” the campaign highlights how empowering women in science, technology, and agribusiness strengthens food systems and creates broader opportunities for communities.

From strategy to farm

For Norie Bermudez, first vice president and country director for Agribusiness-Philippines, leadership is about linking strategy to on-the-ground realities.

With nearly 30 years at Pilmico Foods Corporation, from frontline sales to executive roles, she now oversees the company’s Philippine agribusiness operations and manages a team spanning experienced professionals and younger talent.

Bermudez emphasizes adaptability and collaboration, believing that diverse perspectives strengthen both business results and farmer partnerships.

“In business, there are only two options - to grow or to die. I choose to grow, not by being the toughest person in the room, but by being relatable and open to evolving,” she said, adding that empowering women in agriculture is key to creating shared value for communities.

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) relaunched the Women’s Enterprise Fund (WEF), a P2-billion financing facility designed to expand access to capital for women-owned and women-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (WMSMEs).

Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque said qualified entrepreneurs may borrow from P20,000 up to P10 million through the DTI’s financing arm, the Small Business Corporation (SBCorp). The facility provides interest-free and

Food integrity

At PT Gold Coin Indonesia, assistant vice president for Nutrition and Research Sahera Nofyangtri oversees the safety and nutritional quality of animal feeds, describing the feed mill as an open kitchen where every ingredient and formulation is carefully checked.

“Innovation is not about noble theories, but about speed, boldness, and thoroughness in identifying gaps before applying them,” she said.

On the field side, Emiechelle Rivera encouraged young women not to fear stepping into challenging spaces.

“Don’t be afraid to step into spaces that challenge you. In field veterinary work, you aren’t just solving animal health concerns; you are sustaining livelihoods and protecting the food supply for entire communities.”

Rivera is a veterinary services and training specialist at Pilmico Animal Nutrition Corporation, crafting disease prevention and animal health programs that help farmers protect livestock and the broader food supply.

Catalysts of innovation

Turning scientific innovation into practical value for farmers and customers is another critical link in the food value chain.

Phuong Nguyen Thi Truc, product marketing manager for Aqua, helps translate technical data into marketrelevant insights for aquaculture customers.

“As a market navigator, my role is to translate complex science and connect

it to the customer’s reality,” she said. “Innovation only matters if it is understood and accessible.”

Meanwhile, Floreda Molina, assistant vice president for Gamefowl Feeds, leads sales teams in a segment traditionally dominated by men. Her work involves strengthening relationships with industry stakeholders while promoting responsible practices in the sector.

“Own your expertise, take calculated risks, and architect your path,” Molina said, encouraging more women to pursue leadership roles in agribusiness.

Women partners

There is no better way to drive progress than by working with people on the ground. For more than 15 years, backyard duck farmer and agripreneur Marilou Capiendo of San Jose, Tarlac has partnered with Pilmico to grow her livelihood. With technical support and a reliable supply of feed, she and her husband built a thriving duckegg business that also supports small resellers in their community.

“For me, true success is being able to help others who want to start a business. When they see what we’ve achieved, they realize that if we can do it, they can too,” Capiendo said.

Future of food

Through the HERstory campaign, Aboitiz Foods highlights how women contribute at every stage of the food value chain - from scientific research and veterinary services to product marketing and farm entrepreneurship. Their work reflects the company’s broader mission of sustainably feeding Asia’s growth from mill to meal, while demonstrating that leadership in agribusiness today increasingly draws on both technical expertise and inclusive collaboration.

Together, their stories reflect how women in agriculture help sustain livelihoods, support local communities, and keep food systems moving.

chief executive Robert Bastillo said the state-run lender has already disbursed more than P8 billion in loans to women-led MSMEs.

TheWomen’s Enterprise Fund was relaunched during the inaugural DTI Wedding Fair, which showcased the creativity and innovation of Filipino entrepreneurs in the wedding and events industry.

Interested entrepreneurs may apply online through the SBCorp Business Resource System portal at www.brs. sbcorp.ph. Applicants must submit a business permit such as a barangay certification, mayor’s permit, or BMBE certificate, a government-issued ID, proof of bank account, photos of the business, and other relevant corporate documents if applicable.

Dr. Emiechelle Rivera combines scientific precision in the lab with biosecurity in the field to ensure that safe food reaches a family’s table.
Agripreneur Marilou Capiendo illustrates the ‘Give to Gain’ philosophy, turning research and sales support into a thriving livelihood that nourishes her family and community.

Study says EVs may outlast gas cars

ANEW study from Vietnam comparing electric and gasoline vehicles suggests EVs may be more durable over time. At a time when rising fuel costs and growing interest in electric mobility are shaping conversations among Filipino motorists, the findings offer reassurance for early EV adopters in emerging markets such as the Philippines.

EV owners in the Philippines, particularly VinFast drivers, may take comfort in new research suggesting that electric vehicles can match or even surpass gasoline cars in long-term reliability. With fuel prices remaining volatile and many Filipino drivers weighing the long-term costs of car ownership, questions about durability and maintenance have become key considerations when exploring EV options.

The research was conducted by an automotive research group

at Hanoi University of Science and Technology and presented earlier this year at the International Conference on Manufacturing and Production Technology in Malaysia. The team analyzed maintenance records and performance data from nearly 5,700 vehicles operating in Vietnam between 2020 and 2024.

Vietnam has emerged as one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing EV markets, offering a glimpse of how electric mobility could evolve in neighboring countries such as the

CAR CARE 101 FOR OLDER CARS:

Philippines, where adoption is still in its early stages.

The dataset included 1,047 VinFast electric vehicles and 4,620 gasoline vehicles operating in Vietnam between 2020 and 2024. The gasoline models came from multiple brands, including VinFast’s earlier internal combustion lineup as well as Hyundai and Chevrolet vehicles.

The goal was to compare how the two types of vehicles hold up over time. To do this, the researchers used three separate approaches: statistical reliability modeling, real-world service data, and controlled mechanical testing.

The first method used reliability modeling to estimate the probability of failures as vehicles age. In the early years, both vehicle types performed similarly. But after roughly 12 years of operation, the curves began to separate. The cumulative failure probability for gasoline vehicles rose above 81%, while

replace brake pads with OE-grade confidence from ADVICS Brake System

WITH road trips, long weekends, and daily drives to school and work, many motorists are preparing their vehicles for heavier road use.

For owners of older cars, one important safety check that should never be overlooked is the condition of your brake pads.

Brake pads naturally wear down over time. In older vehicles especially, years of daily driving, stop-and-go traffic, and constant exposure to heat and rain can affect braking performance.

Here are some warning signs to watch out for:

• Squealing or grinding sounds when braking

• Vibrations or judder felt on the brake pedal

• Longer stopping distances

• Visibly thin brake pads

• Brake warning light turning on

If you notice any of these, it may be time to have your brakes inspected, ideally before heading out on long drives or during busy travel seasons.

Why Brake Quality Matters

Braking is a complete system. Choosing reliable, well-engineered components helps maintain consistent and balanced stopping performance.

ADVICS, part of the AISIN Group and the company’s dedicated brand for braking systems, is recognized as one of the world’s leading brake manufacturers. The company supplies high-quality braking components and systems to major automotive manufacturers worldwide.

Developed using the same standards as original equipment (OE) parts for

global automakers, ADVICS products help support vehicle safety and performance.

For everyday drivers, ADVICS offers brake pads designed for dependable daily use.

They deliver balanced braking performance while helping reduce noise and vibration, resist cracking and corrosion, and maintain more even wear over time. Its tough body structure design also helps improve durability during frequent braking, making it suitable for city driving, school runs, and long-distance travel.

More Than Just Brake Pads ADVICS manufactures a full range of brake components, including hydraulics, brake boosters, master cylinders, wheel cylinders, disc rotors, and brake shoes. These components are produced under OEM-level quality controls and are engineered for durability and smooth braking feel. For older vehicles,

electric vehicles remained around 63%. By year 15, gasoline cars approached a 98% probability of failure, compared with about 86% for EVs.

Other international research has also suggested that modern electric vehicles can remain in service for around 18.4 years on average, approaching the lifespan of gasoline cars and in some cases exceeding diesel vehicles.

The second approach looked at real-world maintenance records. Once vehicles passed roughly 40,000 kilometers, electric cars began showing fewer faults than gasoline models. Between 80,000 and 125,000 kilometers, EV fault rates ranged from 0.021 to 0.029 incidents per 1,000 kilometers, compared with 0.025 to 0.034 for internal combustion vehicles.

The third method involved mechanical testing. In repeated downhill braking tests, brake

maintaining these parts helps support overall brake system performance as the car continues to age. Brake Performance Goes beyond the Pads Brake performance does not rely on brake pads alone. Brake and clutch fluid also play a critical role in keeping a vehicle safe and responsive.

Brake fluid transfers the force from the driver’s foot on the pedal into hydraulic pressure, allowing the vehicle to slow down effectively and consistently. To ensure reliable performance, AISIN brake fluids are formulated using fully synthetic oil and are designed to help protect the braking system while maintaining smooth operation.

AISIN brake fluids are engineered to protect against corrosion, help regulate pH levels within the system, maintain proper lubrication of internal components, and remain fluid even under very low temperatures.

Operating under Synergyauto Ventures Corporation, it brings Nissan’s dealership network to 51 nationwide

NISSAN Philippines continues to strengthen its presence in South Luzon with the formal inauguration of Nissan Calamba, now operating under the management of Synergyauto Ventures Corporation (SVC), further solidifying the brand’s long-standing connection with communities in the region.

In line with Nissan Retail Concept standards, the dealership provides

disc temperatures in gasoline vehicles climbed from about 36.8°C to 147.6°C. Electric vehicles, using regenerative braking to convert kinetic energy back into electricity, showed almost no change, rising only slightly from 33.4°C to around 38.4°C.

“Electric vehicles demonstrate durability both in theory and in real-world conditions. The findings offer a scientific and objective view of long-term vehicle reliability,” said Dr. Dam Hoang Phuc, Associate Professor of Automotive Engineering at Hanoi University of Science and Technology and leader of the research team.

For the Philippines, where EV adoption is gradually gaining momentum, insights like these may help address one of the biggest hesitations among prospective buyers: whether electric vehicles can endure years of daily driving under real-world conditions.

Easy Homemade Cat Treat Recipes

Drawing from both Dr. Coates’ insights and the Westerville Pets guide, here are three easy recipes you can prepare quickly and safely at home:

1. Tuna Bites

This recipe is a favorite among cats due to the irresistible aroma of tuna.

Ingredients:

1 can of tuna in water, drained

1 beaten egg

1 cup whole wheat flour

1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions: Mix

First of two parts

CATS hold a special place in our hearts, and as devoted pet owners, we strive to provide them with the best care possible. One way to show love and attention is through homemade treats—snacks crafted with wholesome ingredients that cater to your cat’s unique tastes and nutritional needs. While commercial treats are convenient, making your own allows you to control what goes into them, ensuring freshness and safety.

Why Choose Homemade Treats for Your Cat?

According to Dr. Coates in her article How to Make Homemade Treats for Cats, homemade treats offer a way to avoid the preservatives, artificial flavors, and fillers often found in commercial products. This is especially important for cats with allergies or sensitivities. By making treats at home, you can tailor ingredients to your cat’s preferences and dietary requirements, ensuring they receive snacks that are both delicious and nutritious.

Homemade treats also foster a deeper bond between you and your feline companion. The process of preparing treats can be enjoyable and rewarding, giving you the chance to experiment with flavors and textures that your cat will love. Dr. Coates emphasizes that treats should complement a balanced diet and not replace regular meals, maintaining your cat’s overall health.

Essential Considerations

Before You Begin

Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning their diet must be rich in animal proteins and specific nutrients like taurine. When making treats, it is vital to use ingredients that support these needs. Dr. Coates warns against using harmful food such as onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes, or excessive salt and sugar, which can be toxic or harmful to cats.

Treats should make up no more than 10 per cent of your cat’s daily calorie intake to avoid weight gain and nutritional imbalances. Introducing new treats gradually and observing your cat’s reaction is also important to ensure they tolerate the ingredients well.

Safe and Nutritious Ingredients

High-quality proteins such as chicken, turkey, tuna, and salmon are excellent bases for homemade

treats. Simple ingredients like canned tuna, eggs, and whole wheat flour can be combined to create tasty snacks, as highlighted in Dr. Coates’ article. It is best to avoid dairy unless your cat is known to tolerate it, since many cats are lactose intolerant.

The Westerville Pets, in the article “Five Easy Homemade Treats for Cats Under 30 Minutes,”

already been transported to the Save ALL homes, where they serve two vital purposes:

1. Augmenting Daily Meals: The food will supplement the specialized diet prepared for the homes’ residents.

2. Stray Feeding Programs: A portion of the donation is earmarked for the group’s

outreach activities, providing meals to stray dogs and cats to prevent them from scavenging through garbage for survival.

While commercial pet food provides a convenient boost, Save ALL maintains a rigorous nutritional standard for its rescues. To ensure the animals develop robust immune systems against common threats like parvovirus, distemper, mange (galis), and erlichia, the organization prepares daily meals of fresh vegetables and meat. Furthermore, the "Save ALL lifestyle" emphasizes freedom and mental health. Unlike some traditional animal homes, these rescues are given roaming time within the sanctuary compound to run, play, and socialize, ensuring their holistic well-being is prioritized during their journey to recovery.

Spotify launches scavenger hunt feature ahead of BTS comeback

SPOTIFY is teaming up with BTS to give fans around the world an interactive way to celebrate the group’s upcoming fifth studio album

ARIRANG

The streaming platform announced a series of global fan experiences designed to build anticipation for what it calls the group’s “comeback of the decade,” offering ARMY new ways to engage with the music and the band ahead of the album’s release.

The campaign begins March 13 with “Decoding Arirang,” an interactive in-app scavenger hunt that kicks off the countdown to the album launch.

Through the experience, fans will search the Spotify app for seven virtual wax cylinder fragments hidden across BTS’ artist profile and related content. Each fragment represents one BTS member and unlocks a secret voice recording in which the member shares personal reflections connected to the album’s lead single.

According to Hannah Pichay, PR lead of Spotify K-pop SEA, the concept draws inspiration from an early moment in Korean music history. In 1896, seven Korean men recorded songs with ethnographer Alice Fletcher using a wax cylinder, which is considered the first

SHOWBIZ

recordings of Korean music and one of the earliest instances of the country’s music being heard abroad.

Spotify’s digital scavenger hunt echoes that history by inviting fans to reassemble a modern version of the wax cylinder.

“The fragments will be hidden in various spots across BTS’ Spotify profile, and fans will have to explore playlists and other features to find them,” Pichay said.

New fragments will drop daily, with clues shared through Spotify K-pop’s account on X. When fans collect all seven pieces, they unlock a final “ARIRANG easter egg” that assembles BTS’ virtual wax cylinder, reveals lyrics from the album’s lead single and plays a special message from the group.

The in-app hunt is part of a broader Spotify campaign called SWIMSIDE, which will also include immersive pop-ups in select cities and other fan-focused experiences tied to the comeback.

“Think of this as a treasure hunt for fans. We hope ARMY have fun discovering the fragments, listening to the members and sharing their finds,” she added.

The “Decoding Arirang” feature launches on the Spotify app at 9:00 p.m. on March 13 and will remain available for a limited time after ARIRANG arrives on the platform.

Margaret Diaz gets bold about her life as a Gen Z sexy star

FOR VMX actress Margaret Diaz, the label “sexy star” often comes with assumptions, which many of them unfair and negative. But the 20-year-old performer believes there is far more behind the image people see on screen.

In an exclusive interview with Manila Standard Entertainment, Margaret spoke openly about what it’s really like to work in a field often misunderstood by the public.

She acknowledged that actors in sensual roles are often judged or reduced to stereotypes, even though they approach their craft with the same focus, dedication, and professionalism as any other actor in the entertainment field.

“I feel a bit sad for people who think we exist just to be objects for their sexual fantasies. It’s not just our bodies we can show off, but our talent and our passion for acting,” the young actress said. Margaret entered the entertainment industry after being discovered by a manager while competing in pageants. What began as a new opportunity quickly became a major shift in her life, especially as she moved from being a student into a profession often scrutinized by the public.

“It’s really a big change. I was still a student and very young. I would say I was quite naive. But my mindset was also shaped by the people around me, who made me understand that there’s nothing wrong with this kind of work. Work is work,” Margaret shared.

The actress said she sees her profession as a form of performance, one that requires the same commitment and discipline expected from any actor.

“For as long as you’re passionate about what you’re doing. And honestly, we’re all just trying to survive and strive everyday,” she continued, echoing the advice she grew up hearing from her parents.

Off camera, Margaret describes herself quite differently from the persona audiences might associate with her roles. Still, she acknowledges the stereotypes that continue to surround performers in sensual roles—stereotypes she hopes

people will begin to question.

“It’s really just basic respect for a person. They’re not doing it to make you an object for their sexual fantasies. When people hear ‘sexy star,’ stereotypes immediately come to mind. But for me as an artist, I haven’t had a single project that I wasn’t passionate about,” the actress shared.

She also believes criticism often says more about the people making it than the artists receiving it.

“I think the judgment and criticism of other people are just a reflection of their own insecurities,” she said.

She also spoke about her own journey with insecurity and how long it took her to embrace them, recalling how she was bullied in the past for not fitting conventional beauty standards.

Over time, she got to learn to change her environment and surround herself with people who encouraged confidence rather than criticism. Today, she sees imperfections not as flaws but as part of being human.

“We all have different flaws and insecurities. And for me, those flaws are what make us beautiful as individuals and as human beings,” she shared.

The actress emphasized that respect on set has been crucial to her development as an actress. By setting clear boundaries with co-actors and the production team, it allows her to work with confidence, even in demanding scenes. Despite the challenges of her roles, Margaret stays focused on her craft and on continuously developing as an artist.

In the future, she hopes to explore roles beyond the sensual image many associate with her today, including romantic comedies. For now, she hopes audiences will see beyond the label.

“I have a lot more to offer than just my body or my beauty. I am more than that,” Margaret stated.

Younger Filipinas increasingly celebrate diverse complexions as conversations on colorism and representation

FOR many Filipinas who grew up in the 1990s and early 2000s, beauty advertisements often carried the same message: lighter skin was the ideal. Whitening soaps filled supermarket aisles, and television commercials regularly featured fair-skinned models as the standard.

Today, that message is slowly changing. Many younger Filipinas are beginning to embrace their natural morena complexion and question long-standing beauty norms.

Morena and proud

Research has long documented how deeply the fair-skin ideal was rooted in Filipino culture. A 2022 study by researchers from De La Salle University found that many Filipinos historically rated lighter complexions as more attractive, reflecting social and historical influences that shaped local beauty standards.

Even with those long-standing influences, conversations about beauty are beginning to change among younger Filipinos. The same 2022 De La Salle University study noted that Gen Z respondents were more likely to view lighter and darker skin tones as equally attractive, suggesting a gradual shift in how appearance is perceived among younger Filipinas.

As younger Filipinos begin to rethink traditional beauty ideals, many of those discussions are unfolding online, where social media platforms have become spaces for creators and audiences to openly discuss colorism, representation, and selfacceptance.

On TikTok and YouTube, Filipina creators increasingly discuss the expectations placed on women’s appearance and the pressure to meet traditional beauty ideals.

Seventeen to open Manila pop-up store ahead of PH concert

K-POP group  Seventeen   is bringing its pop-up store again to Manila ahead of its upcoming concert in the Philippines later this month. The concept store will run from March 18 to May 17 at Level 3 of the North Main Mall at SM Mall of Asia, offering fans exclusive merchandise and themed items tied to the group’s promotions. The pop-up launch comes just days

spoken about embracing Filipino features while building a global presence in the beauty industry. Others, including  Bella Racelis Angelique Manto and  Ayn Bernos, share their own experiences of being morena while challenging long-standing ideas about Filipina beauty.

While many of these conversations begin on social media, they are increasingly reflected in the broader entertainment landscape, where celebrities and public figures have also helped reshape how morena beauty is seen in mainstream culture.

Actress  Nadine Lustre  has become one of the most visible morena figures in Philippine pop culture, frequently embracing her natural complexion and encouraging others to take pride in their own, unique beauty.

As these shifting attitudes gain visibility in pop culture and online spaces, the beauty industry has also begun adapting to a growing demand for products that reflect a wider range of Filipina skin tones.

Local cosmetics brands now promote broader shade ranges designed for morena and deeper complexions, reflecting a growing demand for representation in the market. Philippine beauty brand GRWM Cosmetics, for example, has gained attention among younger consumers for base products marketed with inclusive shade ranges that aim to reflect the diversity of Filipina skin tones.

Market research by Statista estimated in 2024 that the Philippine beauty and personal care market generated billions of dollars in revenue, highlighting how consumer trends—especially among younger buyers—can influence product development and marketing.

While whitening products remain widely available in the Philippines, attitudes toward skin tone appear to be reaching a turning point. Morena skin is no longer something to hide or change, but something to be embraced as part of Filipino identity.

LIFE is often remembered through milestones—a graduation, a promotion, the birth of a child. Yet many of the moments that shape a woman’s life unfold quietly in between, during periods of change that rarely get the same attention.

This International Women’s Day, feminine care brand Lactacyd is placing those inbetween chapters at the center of its  Fearless Together  campaign, which highlights the transitions women move through over time— some expected, others less so.

The initiative focuses on experiences that can feel deeply personal: shifting career paths, adjusting to motherhood, or navigating new phases of life that bring both uncertainty and growth. While these moments may not always be visible, they often shape confidence and perspective in lasting ways.

“At Lactacyd, we believe that a woman’s journey is not defined solely by milestones, but by everything she goes through in between,” said brand manager  Jamie Superable-Martin

“These transitions can feel deeply personal and, at times, isolating. Through this campaign, we want women to know that what they’re experiencing is valid, shared, and something they don’t have to face alone.”

Music plays a role in carrying that message forward. The campaign introduces “Together Fearless,” a new track performed by rising OPM artist  Jolianne Salvado. Salvado lends her voice to a song that reflects the highs and lows that come with periods of change.

The release of the anthem forms part of the campaign’s effort to spark more open conversations around women’s experiences, especially those that are often kept private. By encouraging women to share stories of these in-between moments, the initiative hopes to create a sense of connection across different life stages.

Alongside the campaign, Lactacyd also highlights its improved formulation, LACTOBIOME+™, used across its feminine wash, baby wash, and body wash lines. The formulation combines natural lactoserum with organic lactic acid to help maintain the skin’s natural pH and support its protective barrier. For the brand, the message behind the campaign remains simple: the moments between life’s big milestones deserve recognition too. And when women acknowledge those experiences—both their own and each other’s—the journey through change can feel less solitary.

LIFE Good

FOR most married women, the term “biyenan” comes with baggage. There are countless memes, jokes, and teleseryes painting mothers-in-law as overly involved or hard to please. But what if the opposite exists?

What if your biyenan becomes your biggest ally in motherhood?

That’s exactly what Zenny Quilaquil found in her mother-in-law, Leticia De Silva.

Zenny, a working mom of three — including a pair of energetic twin boys and a seven-year-old daughter — knew she couldn’t do it alone. She had her hands full with parenting, work, and life. But she had

something not every mom gets to have: a partner in child-rearing, a co-nanay, right at home.

Leticia, 59, is one of the finalists for Best Supporting Nanay, an initiative under Generika Drugstore’s broader mission to celebrate unsung maternal figures in Filipino households. But to Zenny, Leticia already holds the title.

At home, Zenny and Leticia work as a team. They alternate responsibilities depending on who’s free. Back when Zenny had part-time shifts that lasted six hours, Leticia would take over and care for the kids. Once Zenny came home, she’d take the reins.

On weekends, it was Lola Leticia’s turn again, especially when the children asked to go out. These outings became their special lola-apó bonding time, filled with laughter, stories, and simple joys.

“Mapagbigay talaga siya,” Zenny laughs. “Minsan nga sobra na. Kahit laruan o gadget, bibilhin agad kapag nakita niyang malungkot o paiyak na ‘yung mga bata.”

It’s in these moments that their differences sometimes surface. Zenny admits they don’t always agree, especially when Leticia gives in to the kids even after a firm “no.” But in the grander scheme of things, Zenny knows how lucky she is.

“Hindi lahat nabibigyan ng biyenan na ganito. Masuwerte ako,” she says. “Kahit may tampuhan o hindi pagkakaintindihan, ang mahalaga pareho kaming ang iniisip ay ‘yung kapakanan ng mga bata.”

Lola’s kind of love

Leticia is no stranger to sacrifice. A single mom to five children, she has long mastered the rhythm of raising kids. She jokes that she’s used to the noise, the chaos, and the mess. But behind that lightness is a heart full of quiet resilience.

While she may not contribute financially, Leticia gives what she can. Oftentimes, her savings go straight to her grandchildren. It may not be much, but it’s always enough to make them feel loved.

And to Zenny, that’s more valuable than anything.

Zenny is quick to acknowledge that their relationship isn’t flawless. They have occasional disagreements and moments of misunderstanding. But what grounds them is the shared goal of raising good, well-loved children.

Leticia’s biggest dream is simple: for her grandchildren to grow up without the hardship she once faced.

“Gusto ko makahanap sila ng partner na marunong magmahal at mag-alaga. Ayoko na maranasan nila ang hirap,”Leticia shares.

Zenny echoes this sentiment, wishing her children not only find good partners, but good in-laws too.

“‘Pag tumanda na sila, sana makatagpo sila ng biyenan na katulad ng lola nila. Hindi lahat nabibigyan ng gano’n. Minsan kasi mas pinapansin pa kung may trabaho ka, kung may kaya ka. Pero ang importante, may malasakit.”

FHMoms: Connecting and empowering stay-at-home moms

MK, Rossby, and Cheenee have one thing in common. They belong to a community of over half a million Filipino work-from-home moms, some of them overseas.

What started out in 2017 as an FB page for stay-athome moms interested in online gigs, FHMoms (Filipina Homebased Moms) has become a burgeoning enterprise.

“I didn’t plan to turn this into a business when I started the Facebook group which now has 500k members globally, and is now a corporation,” Maria Korina (MK) Bertulfo, CEO and founder of FHMoms, says in an interview with the MS Good Life.

“I was a former call center agent when I got an online job. I started FH Moms because I was looking for a support group that could help me in my work as a virtual assistant for a foreign client,” says MK who was 22 then with 2-year old son.

After getting online jobs for her husband and two friends, MK saw the opportunities being offered in the virtual world, shared her experience with FHMoms members, and began helping them write their resumes and application letters.

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit in 2019, an internet shop which closed down partnered with MK to loan out their computers to interested users. A BPO firm reached out and asked her group to recruit 200 employees. That was, for MK, a turning point for FHMoms.

Today, most of FHMom’s members are millennial moms, between ages 28-43, which are considered to be “peak caregiving and income-building years” for mothers.

I’D like to say that it’s just like being a mom on any other day but that would be an outright lie. There is a striking surge of news from internet feeds, all trying to beat down my door, all demanding attention. Through the years, I’ve become familiar with the tone of these news cycles. They are meant to incite fear. Fear reinforces helplessness. You can’t be a mom and be helpless. Not these days. So I meet this deluge of stories with the one thing I can do: I create. I create the atmosphere in the house—calm, safe, loving. I create nourishing food as much as I can. I create paintings, stories and conversations: we are not powerless, we are not at the mercy of what’s going on around us. We are free agents, we create our own world. I’ve had some discussions in the past regarding my political stance. Are you with this party? Are you that team? And I’ve always told anyone who asked my opinion this: to make good decisions every day for the betterment of my being—all layers of it, seen and unseen—that’s my political ideal. Not everyone understands it, but it’s ok. They think it’s ignorance, I say it’s a

Majority of them are based in Luzon, with the rest scattered in Visayas and Mindanao, and overseas, according to an informal survey conducted among its members.

MK says work-from-home moms aspire for the following:

l Stable online income

l Freelancing or remote work

l Starting or growing an online business

l Financial security for family

l Time flexibility and worklife balance

For Mary Rose ‘Rossby’ De Guzman and Carmela ‘Cheenee’ Luarca, FHMoms have changed their lives for the better. Rossby, 51 and mother of 3, held a managerial post in a micro-finance firm, became a teacher and turned to freelancing when she joined FHMoms in 2020.

“I learned from FHMoms that you can transfer your skills and knowledge to the freelancing world. But you will also need to learn other things to be able to apply them,” says Rossby.

“I was able to get a scholarship from FHMoms. Social media marketing. Zero accounting. Short courses awarded by FHMoms. They also had announcements on community activities, seminars on beauty and health so I decided to join the group officially,” she says.

“Malaki ang naitulong ng FHMoms, kasi you meet a lot of people there. Since we are all moms, we learned to value each other talaga. When you get to know each other, you get to know their skills which you can offer to the market. So every time you get to know of a job opportunity, you can pass it on to the network. So that’s the usual benefit I get from

grandchildren, Leticia offered three heartfelt tips:

1. Mahabang pasensya.

Misunderstandings are normal, especially between in-laws. But what matters is the effort to support each other, not compete with one another.

2. Pantay-pantay na pagmamahal. Favoritism creates distance. Leticia believes every grandchild deserves equal care so that no one feels left behind.

3. Unawain, hindi lang intindihin.

A soft heart builds strong bridges between generations. The more open and understanding you are, the more peaceful the home becomes.

A quiet example of ginhawa and kalinga

Leticia may not see herself as someone extraordinary, but her daily acts of care and consistency prove otherwise. She is the kind of woman who steps up—not for recognition, but out of love. In her, we see the kind of ginhawa that Generika Drugstore stands for: comfort that goes beyond medicine, and care that radiates through relationships. The kind of kalinga that doesn’t just support one child, but helps carry an entire household forward.

Zenny and Leticia’s story is not just about navigating in-law relationships—it’s about sharing the load, raising children together, and finding healing in the everyday. They remind us that ginhawa doesn’t always come from a bottle; sometimes, it comes from a warm hand, a quiet “ako na muna,” or a lola who never stops giving. There are many Leticias out there. And while they don’t often get the spotlight, it’s stories like theirs that fuel Generika’s vision of bringing Ginhawang Generika closer to every Filipino family— especially those whose strength lies in shared love and everyday sacrifices.

being a member of FHMoms community,” explains Rossby. While her gig earnings may not be more than what she was earning in her corporate job, Rossby says this is more than compensated by ”the quality time I am spending now with family, time for one’s self. You can choose your project, being an independent contractor. You can decide when to work. That’s what I gave up when I was doing a corporate job.” Cheenee, 37, was a stayat-home mom with four children when she was invited by a neighbor to join FHMoms. She was then running a home printing service for students with computers her partner bought from savings earned in Japan.

“I joined a webinar by MK on how to start to work from home. I will never forget that. That was free. It was three hours long and went on for several sessions,” she says. It was a timely move for Cheenee for the pandemic struck several months after the seminar. She went to post her resume at an online jobs platform for foreign clients.

“I was hired and the tools I learned from the webinar I made use of in my first freelancing job,” she told MS Good Life. Chenee went on to lead the onsite volunteer team at the FHMoms Get Hired job fair in Megatrade Hall last year. Since its founding, MK says, FHMoms has evolved into a skills, work, and family ecosystem. It has shown that working from home is a viable alternative for moms these days.

I go to bed exhausted but fulfilled. That is the goal. To do the best we can do, every single day. That’s what it’s all about, right? Who am I?
