“No money went to me. All the insertions went to the President and to Speaker Martin Romualdez,” Co said in his second video released yesterday where he showed photos of suitcases which he claimed contained cash.

House deputy minority leader and Mamamayang Liberal Rep. Leila de Lima, for her part, said Co’s claim of not benefitting from the budget insertions and the flood control mess was impossible and illogical.

“It is simply unbelievable,” De Lima said.

Palace hits Co for peddling lies, propaganda on budget issue

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and former House Speaker and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez on Saturday shrugged off claims of former Ako Bicol partylist Rep. Zaldy Co on the alleged P100 billion worth of insertions in the 2025 national budget.

“I don’t want to even dignify what he is saying,” Mr. Marcos said in a media interview in La Castellana, Negros Occidental when asked to react to Co’s accusation that he ordered the insertion.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro described Co’s claims against the President as “lies, propaganda.”

“ Zaldy Co’s sin against the country is expanding,” Castro said in a video statement.

Castro said Co’s claims about delivering P100 billion in insertions were inconsistent with the actual budget process, pointing out that the President had vetoed line items totaling P194 billion.

“Why would DBM Secretary Mina (Amenah Pangandaman) order P100 billion in insertions if the President had already vetoed projects of greater value?” the Palace official added.

no matter how many parts his videos reach, his statements and presented evidence cannot be used in court if he does not swear in the proper forum,” she added.

Co earlier asked Blue Ribbon chairman Senator Panfilo Lacson to review first the alleged insertions in the 2025 budget.

“I respectfully urge Senator Lacson to first review the full list of alleged insertions made under the directive of President Marcos and clearly reflected in the 2025 GAA,” Co said.

“You may cross-check the 2025 NEP to verify if the same line items appear there…I suggest that before making statements that may unfairly prejudice the issue, the Senator should examine the documents in full,” he added.

THE Philippine National Police has placed its forces on the highest alert status to secure the three-day simultaneous prayer rallies led by the Iglesia Ni Cristo in Metro Manila beginning today.

President Marcos visits typhoon-hit Negros Occidental

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Saturday toured towns in Negros Occidental heavily affected by Typhoon Tino, inspecting damaged schools, bridges, and homes, and meeting with residents displaced by the storm.

The President began his visit at Jose Pepito Montilla Garcia Sr. National High School in Barangay 1, Moises Padilla, where classrooms were flooded during the typhoon.

School officials reported significant damage and welcomed the President’s presence. The school, which serves 1,257 students, has shifted to alterna -

tive learning arrangements while repairs are underway.

Earlier this week, the President approved P95 million in aid for communities hit by Typhoon Tino in Negros Occidental.

Of this amount, P50 million is allocated for the province; P10 million each for La Carlota City and the towns of La Castellana and Moises Padilla; and P5 million each for Binalbagan, Isabela, and Hinigaran.

Mr. Marcos also visited Barangay Poblacion in La Castellana to assess the condition of damaged homes and evacuees housed at La Castellana El-

ementary School. According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development, 307 families, or 1,117 individuals, are currently staying at the temporary shelter.

The President then inspected the collapsed Bungahin Steel Bridge in Barangay Robles, La Castellana, which had cut off upland villages from the town proper during the storm.

After the field visits, Mr. Marcos joined a briefing at the La Castellana Municipal Hall with Cabinet members and local officials to review ongoing recovery and rehabilitation efforts.

IN BRIEF

Navy recovers suspected Chinese rocket debris

THE Philippine Navy said it recovered a large piece of suspected rocket debris northwest of Tubbataha Reef, believed to be from a Long March 12 rocket launched by China. The operation took place on November 11 in Philippine waters.

A Navy surveillance aircraft first spotted the floating object about 60 nautical miles from the reef. BRP Andres Bonifacio (PS17), which was nearby, was deployed to the location and confirmed it as suspected space debris.

The debris was brought to the Western Naval Command headquarters for documentation and technical assessment. Officials will determine its origin and the proper disposition.

WESNAVCOM Commander Rear Admiral Vincent Sibala commended the crew and emphasized the need for constant maritime monitoring to ensure the safety of Philippine waters. Rex Espiritu

The ship launched a rigidhull inflatable boat to retrieve the material, which measured about 12 by 21 feet. The recovery was completed the same afternoon.

SC designates special courts for infra corruption

THE Supreme Court announced the designation of several Regional Trial Courts as special courts that will exclusively handle corruption cases involving infrastructure projects. The move is in line with Republic Act 10660, which expanded the jurisdiction of RTCs over anti-graft cases.

THE United States has pledged an additional $1.5 million, or P87 million, in emergency aid to the Philippines in the wake of Super Typhoon Uwan, the US Embassy in Manila said Saturday, bringing Washington’s total disaster-relief contribution to $2.5 million, approximately P145 million. The funds will support the Philippine government’s relief operations, including logistics, emergency shelter, water and sanitation services, and the management of evacuation centers, the embassy said in a statement.

US military units have also joined the effort. The US Indo-Pacific Command said it deployed assets and personnel

to assist in disaster response, working alongside the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Office of Civil Defense, and other local agencies.

“In the immediate aftermath of Super Typhoon Fung-wong … the United States continues to answer the call for assistance from one of our closest friends, partners, and allies, the Philippines,” the embassy said.

As of November 13, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that around 4.68 million people across 16 regions were affected by Super Typhoon Uwan.

The announcement comes as the country grapples with overlapping disasters. In addition to Super Typhoon Uwan and Typhoon Tino, the Philippines is still recovering from a magnitude-6.9

earthquake that struck Cebu in late September.

Meanwhile, the European Union has allocated more than P85 million (€1.2 million) in humanitarian assistance to support communities in Cebu devastated by Typhoons Tino and Uwan. The aid aims to address urgent needs and bolster ongoing relief efforts following the widespread destruction brought by the consecutive storms.

“Notably, funding will directly support beneficiaries in communities affected by the typhoons in Cebu that had been previously hit by the recent earthquake,” the EU said. According to separate NDRRMC situational reports, Typhoons Tino and Uwan affected more than 11 million individuals and left 276 dead nationwide.

Agricultural losses from recent typhoons may reach P2b

RTCs will have jurisdiction over graft cases that do not involve damage to the government or bribery, as well as cases involving government losses or bribery not exceeding P1 million.

Appeals from the decisions of these designated RTCs will be elevated to the Sandiganbayan. Pot Chavez

The SC earlier passed a resolution directing the Office of the Court Administrator to monitor the filing of these cases before the designated courts. Areas without assigned RTCs will refer cases to the nearest region with special courts. Judges selected to hear these cases will undergo training from the Philippine Judicial Academy covering substantive and procedural laws.

DSWD commits support for Tino victims in Leyte

SOCIAL Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian has pledged full support to families in Southern Leyte affected by Typhoon Tino, saying the government will continue assistance until their recovery is complete.

Gatchalian made the assurance during a meeting with provincial and municipal leaders in Hinunangan, where he said the DSWD has a preliminary list of partially and totally damaged houses and will begin processing financial aid.

Families with partially damaged homes will receive P5,000, while those with totally damaged homes will receive

P10,000. Gatchalian also visited affected communities on the instruction of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who directed him to ensure that assistance reaches all affected households.

During the meeting, he instructed DSWD Field Office 8 to work with local officials to fast-track the release of additional non-food items, including kitchen kits, hygiene kits, and sleeping kits. He also committed to sustaining food assistance for as long as local governments need it, noting that supplies are already available in the regional warehouse. Maricel V. Cruz

THE Department of Agriculture has mobilized emergency aid and farm inputs to help farmers and fisherfolk recover from the back-to-back onslaught of Tropical Storm Tino and Super Typhoon Uwan, which together may have caused as much as P2 billion in agricultural losses.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. said initial assessments show that destruction in Catanduanes

alone, particularly in abaca, coconut, and fishery, has already approached P1 billion.

“For abaca alone, the damage in Catanduanes is nearly P700 million. Coconut plantations were almost wiped out. These are preliminary figures, but I would assume that the total impact of both storms could reach between P1 billion to P2 billion,” he said, noting that the estimate does not yet include the nearly P1.2 billion in losses to sugarcane crops in Negros.

The Agriculture chief joined President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during the latter’s visit to Catanduanes on Thursday to assess the full extent of Uwan’s devastation.

Despite the widespread damage, Tiu Laurel said the DA has prepared extensive post-typhoon support, including low-interest recovery loans, insurance indemnification, financial and fuel assistance, and the distribution of seeds, fertilizers, fingerlings, boats, and fishing gear.

Rody camp seeks immediate release from detention

THE defense team of former President Rodrigo Duterte has asked the International Criminal Court (ICC) for his “immediate and unconditional release,” arguing that the court has no legal basis to continue proceedings against him.

In a 21-page appeal brief dated November 14, the defense urged the Appeals Chamber to reverse an earlier ruling that allowed the case to proceed.

They argued that under Article 12(2) of the Rome Statute, the Philippines must have been a State Party at the time the ICC exercised jurisdiction. The Philippines withdrew from the ICC in March 2019, while the authorization to open an investigation was issued only in 2021. The defense said the Pre-Trial Chamber erred in treating certain provisions of the statute as lex specialis and in adopting a broad definition of the term “matter.”

They also argued that the chamber was wrong to conclude that the statute’s object and purpose allowed the continuation of an investigation even after the Philippines had withdrawn. They insisted there was no legal basis for extending the court’s authority.

PBBM evidence-based probe statement ends ‘fall guy’ plot

FORMER Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers on Saturday said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s categorical declaration that there is no evidence linking former Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez to any flood control controversy has “finally ended all attempts to make him a political fall guy.”

Barbers, Romualdez’s chief political officer during the previous Congress, said the President’s clarification “pulverized the false narratives” circulated in recent weeks.

He said the President’s statement makes clear that “the fall guy narrative is over,” even as some groups may still attempt to draw Romualdez into the issue. Barbers stressed that now “the real work begins,” saying the President emphasized that truth and account -

ability must prevail.

He added that allegations should be based on clear and reliable evidence, not speculation, hearsay, or falsehoods.

Barbers said the probe should now shift to identifying “those truly involved in the anomalies,” supported by documents, receipts, contracts, and other verifiable records.

He welcomed the President’s remarks as a reset that clears political distractions from the ongoing review

of flood control spending.

With Romualdez cleared, Barbers said investigators can finally “zero in on the real paper trail,” including project lists, budget insertions, contract issuances, and engineering validations. He said the President’s statement removes any smokescreen, allowing investigators to simply follow the documents and the fund trail.

Barbers noted that the only allegation against Romualdez came from Orly Guteza, whose credibility collapsed after a Manila court ruled that he falsified a lawyer’s signature on his affidavit.

Guteza also failed to appear at the Department of Justice to verify his claims and has since disappeared from public view. With no supporting witnesses or documents, Barbers said the accusation does not meet even the minimum standards of evidence.

De Lima pushes truth and reconciliation commission on drug war killings

LIBERAL Party-list Rep. Leila de Lima said the proposed truth and reconciliation commission that would investigate alleged extrajudicial killings during former president Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-drug campaign would fully uncover details of the operations, including the identities of those involved and any reward systems used.

De Lima said she fully supports the creation of a truth commission, noting that while the International Criminal Court is conducting its own probe, it cannot cover all aspects of the drug war. She said her office is preparing a bill to institutionalize the commission, which may be filed as early as January.

She emphasized that accountability

should extend beyond top officials to include middle-level officers and other personnel who implemented the campaign. She said the commission would be more comprehensive than the ICC’s investigation and could determine the full number of victims.

De Lima noted that thousands were killed during the campaign, and many accounts are not within the ICC’s scope.

A national truth commission, she said, would provide a clearer and fuller record of what transpired.

The call for such a body was earlier echoed by Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, who said the commission should not seek vengeance but establish truth and provide victims a path toward healing and support.

China tells citizens: Avoid Japan travel as Taiwan row grows

BEIJING—China has advised its citizens to avoid travelling to Japan, following a diplomatic feud sparked by comments by Tokyo’s new premier about a hypothetical attack on Taiwan.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told parliament on Nov. 7 that use of force against the self-ruled island claimed by China could warrant a military response from Tokyo.

On Friday, Beijing said that it had summoned Japan’s ambassador, while Tokyo said it had summoned China’s ambassador after an“inappropriate”and now-removed online post.

Tokyo has since said its position on Taiwan – just 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the nearest Japanese island -- is unchanged.

In an online post late Friday, China’s embassy in Japan warned its citizens against travelling to the country.

“Recently, Japanese leaders have made blatantly provocative remarks regarding Taiwan, severely damaging the atmosphere for people-to-people exchanges,” the WeChat post said.

The situation presents “significant risks to the personal safety and lives of Chinese citizens in Japan”, it added.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese embassy and consulates in Japan solemnly remind Chinese citizens to avoid travelling to Japan in the near future.”

Beijing insists Taiwan – which Japan occupied for decades until 1945 – is part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to seize control. AFP

UN Security Council to vote Monday on Trump Gaza plan

UNITED Nations —The UN Security Council will vote Monday on a resolution endorsing US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan, diplomats said.

Last week the Americans officially launched negotiations within the 15-member Security Council on a text that would follow up on a ceasefire in the two-year war between Israel and Hamas and endorse Trump’s plan.

A draft of the resolution seen Thursday by AFP “welcomes the establishment of the Board of Peace,” a transitional governing body for Gaza – that Trump would theoretically chair – with a mandate running until the end of 2027.

It would authorize member states to form a “temporary International Stabilization Force (ISF)” that would work with Israel and Egypt and newly

trained Palestinian police to help secure border areas and demilitarize the Gaza Strip.

Unlike previous drafts, the latest mentions a possible future Palestinian state.

The United States and several Arab and Muslimmajority nations including Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey called Friday for the UN Security Council to quickly adopt the resolution.

“The United States, Qatar, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Jordan, and Türkiye express our joint support for the Security Council Resolution currently under consideration,” the countries said in a joint statement, adding they were seeking the measure’s “swift adoption.”

Friday’s joint statement comes as Russia circulated a competing draft resolution to Council members that does not authorize the creation of a board of peace or the immediate deployment of an international force in Gaza, according to the text seen Friday by AFP.

The Russian version welcomes “the initiative

that led to the ceasefire” but does not name Trump. It also only calls on the UN secretary-general to submit a report that addresses the possibilities of deploying an international stabilization force in war-ravaged Gaza.

The United States has called the ceasefire “fragile,” and warned Friday of the risks of not adopting its draft.

“Any refusal to back this resolution is a vote either for the continued reign of Hamas terrorists or for the return to war with Israel, condemning the region and its people to perpetual conflict,” the US ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, wrote in The Washington Post.

“Every departure from this path, be it by those who wish to play political games or to relitigate the past, will come with a real human cost.”

While it seemed until now that Council members supported principles of the peace plan, diplomatic sources noted there were questions about the US text, particularly regarding the absence of a monitoring mechanism by the Council, the role of the Palestinian Authority, and details of the ISF’s mandate. Filipinos gain stability with new dollar life plan

BPI AIA Life Assurance Corporation

(BPI AIA) has launched Prime USD, a US dollar–denominated life insurance plan that allows Filipinos to preserve and grow their wealth in a stable currency while ensuring life protection for their families.

The product launch comes as US dollar deposits in the Philippines continue to rise, reaching $60.67 billion as of end-June 2025, according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

Prime USD offers guaranteed death or maturity benefits, periodic cash payouts, and potential nonguaranteed dividends—providing policyholders a disciplined way to achieve long-term financial goals while keeping their loved ones financially secure.

As a participating plan, Prime USD builds cash value over time, enabling customers to grow their USD funds alongside their evolving financial milestones. It helps individuals preserve wealth, protect their families, and pass on a lasting legacy.

LUXURY car brand

Lexus Philippines has opened its new Lexus Manila Gallery in North Bonifacio

Global City, a four-story showcase of “omotenashi —the Japanese spirit of hospitality that lies at the heart of every Lexus experience.

The larger and more spacious facility marks a new chapter in Lexus’ 16-year journey in the Philippines. It reflects the brand’s continuing evolution and commitment to “omotenashi”, which Lexus defines as the art of anticipating a guest’s needs even before they are expressed - a guiding principle that shapes its approach to design, service, and customer relationships.

“This new home represents a future chapter for Lexus in the country—bigger, taller, and catering to a more diverse family of Lexus guests,” said Lexus Philippines chairman Alfred Ty during the inauguration held Nov. 6.

Lexus Manila redefines luxury

Ty traced the brand’s beginnings in 2009, when Lexus established its first home at 8th Avenue and 34th Street in Bonifacio Global City.

“More Filipinos are now setting goals that involve foreign currency— whether for saving, travel, or a child’s education abroad. Prime USD helps them gradually build US dollar funds while ensuring their loved ones stay protected. It’s a practical way to prepare for life’s bigger decisions,” said BPI AIA CEO Karen Custodia.

Designed for convenience, Prime USD features a straightforward application process and a fixed payment period, making it easier for customers to secure long-term coverage and benefits. With a minimum face amount of $6,500, policyholders can start building financial security while enjoying the stability of the US dollar.

Prime USD combines wealthbuilding with life protection— helping families prepare for major financial milestones while mitigating risks from currency fluctuations. It is ideal for education abroad, international travel, long-term wealth accumulation, and legacy planning.

Prime USD is offered by BPI AIA, a licensed life insurance company regulated by the Insurance Commission. The plan is available in all BPI branches nationwide.

“That first home was not just a showroom but a platform to showcase the Lexus way of serving, a home where we treated every customer as a guest. We tried to craft a personal relationship with each one of you because we believe this is how we can provide the best service possible,” he said.

Over the years, Lexus has built enduring relationships with customers through personal and lifestyle experiences—from coffeemaking workshops and

calligraphy lessons to bonsai and art appreciation sessions - all embodying “omotenashi” by extending care and attention not limited to the showroom floor.

Ty also recalled key milestones at the original showroom, such as the local unveiling of the LFA supercar, one of only 500 produced worldwide, and the introduction of Lexus’ first five models, that has since expanded to twelve. These vehicles represent the brand’s evolution from luxury sedans to hybrid and fully electrified crossovers and SUVs.

Today, more than 12,000 Lexus vehicles are on Philippine roads —a testament, Ty said, to Filipino customers’ growing trust and loyalty.

The new Lexus Manila Gallery carries the same promise forward. Designed as a physical expression of Japanese hospitality, the facility features expanded service bays, in-house detailing, and upgraded

customer amenities in a calm, gallerylike setting. Every touchpoint - from vehicle display to after-sales - has been crafted to deliver a seamless, anticipatory experience that reflects Japanese hospitality and attention to detail.

In the Philippines, Lexus operates under Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP), the exclusive distributor of Toyota and Lexus vehicles. TMP oversees Lexus’ operations to ensure that the brand’s core values—hospitality, innovation, and quality—remain consistent across its expanding presence.

Toyota Motor Philippines president Masando Hashimoto said the new gallery underscores Lexus’ evolution and ambition in the market.

Design Week Philippines 2025 celebrates creativity as a force for national well-being

NOW in its 14th year, Design Week Philippines (DWP) 2025 has evolved into a national movement that celebrates Filipino creativity, makes design accessible to all, and nurtures

Organized by the Design Center of the Philippines under the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), this year’s theme, “Towards Ginhawa,” reflected a shift from design as a specialized craft to a collective force for inclusive growth and sustainable innovation.

Held from October 11 to 18, the nationwide celebration opened at Ayala Malls Circuit, Makati, and concluded at Ayala Triangle Gardens, featuring talks, workshops, tours, and the popular Design Sari-Sari—each highlighting design’s power to connect, uplift, and transform.

DWP’s reach was unprecedented, with 136 events, 145 partners, and 45 cities and municipalities across 17 regions.

From Bontoc to Tawi-Tawi, regional design weeks proved that creativity thrives not only in urban centers but in communities across the country.

“Design is a force of good. It builds communities, strengthens industries, and uplifts lives. It’s not only about solving problems but about creating conditions where people and the planet can flourish together,” said Trade secretary Cristina Roque, noting that the creative industries generated P1.94 trillion in 2024.

At the weeklong festivities, experts discussed how design fuels innovation and local industry growth, with Design Center deputy executive director Lucky Lopez

noting that with digital tools, creative work can now be produced and monetized anywhere in the country— allowing designers to thrive without moving to Manila and driving regional economic growth.

Design’s role in sustainability also took center stage as Spanish designer Héctor Serrano presented the TIERRA pendant light, a 3D-printed lamp made from PLA bioplastic and cellulose, shaped like a beehive to symbolize biodiversity.

Lexus Manila president Carlo Ablaza explained that Lexus’ electrification strategy and nextgeneration concepts highlight the brand’s drive toward a sustainable yet emotionally engaging future. “Fifteen years of good work are behind us, and even greater journeys lie ahead. Together, we look forward to continuing to create amazing experiences for our customers,” he said.

One of the activities took place at Haduan Negrito Integrated School in Clark, Mabalacat City, where the Maxim team distributed food supplies, hygiene products, school materials, and clothing to Aeta students and their families. School officials said it was the first time the institution had received large-scale assistance from a private company. The administration expressed deep gratitude to Maxim for its generosity, saying the visit brought much-needed encouragement and hope to a community seldom reached by corporate support.

A second event took place in Barangay Sapangbato, where local children took part in games, activities, and gift-giving. Each child received food packs, drinks, and school supplies, with about 500 schoolchildren and parents joining the celebration. Teachers praised the initiative for bringing both practical assistance and joy to the community. Maxim said it is committed to advancing its social responsibility, particularly in supporting indigenous communities and education programs across the Philippines.

NLEX shoulder improvement works underway to alleviate peak traffic congestion

THE North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) has begun shoulder clearing and regrading works along a stretch from the Harbor Link Interchange to Marilao in an effort to alleviate heavy traffic during peak travel periods. The improvement project should cover approximately 10,000 linear meters in both directions of the busy corridor, with the scope of work involving the removal of accumulated sand, grass, and debris to maximize space; restoring proper cross-slope for improved rainwater drainage; and adding a 150-mm base course in select areas to provide a more stable and smoother surface. “By clearing and upgrading the shoulders,

TOYOTA Motor Philippines (TMP) has released additional details for its first-ever Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) offering in the country, the all-new Toyota bZ4X, ahead of its anticipated arrival in December, following the opening of the reservation period last November 7. A notable detail released by TMP is the sourcing of the vehicle. The Philippines will receive the Japan-sourced bZ4X, distinguishing it from electric vehicles often sourced from China. The second piece of information provided addresses one of the most frequently asked questions by prospective buyers: the electric range. “While actual consumption and range will vary based on conditions and driving habits, we were able to register 570 km of EV range,” said TMP President Masando Hashimoto. He noted this figure is based on the internationally accepted Fuel Consumption Test Protocol under UN Regulations No. 101. Jojo Espino’s hole-in-one and a lifetime of giving

IT’S not too late to be a champion, or at least a great player, in your favorite sport, especially in golf, where older athletes often nd a sort of second wind in their chosen sport.

One late afternoon, the sun cast long, dramatic shadows across the Rancho Palos Verdes Golf Club (RPVGC) fairways, painting the turf in hues of orange and gold. It was exactly 4:01 p.m. on a breezy Friday afternoon when club member Felix “Jojo” Espino stepped onto the tee box of Hole No. 6—the challenging par-3 framed by the Silver Tee Mound.

FOR the golfers who played in the 1st ECP Cup Golf Tournament at the Sherwood Hills Golf Club in Cavite was more than just another fun and game on the fairways.

The event was for a great cause; it was an act of courage, kindness, and collective compassion.

What began as a family’s heartfelt quest to fund a loved one’s cancer treatment has blossomed into a movement, touching hospitals, inspiring volunteers, and lifting countless lives along the way.

The tournament was organized by EJ Pangilinan, whose brother, Edmond Christian “ECP” Pangilinan, has been waging a valiant fight against cancer. Initially, the event was intended to help shoulder Christian’s medical expenses.

But in a gesture that moved everyone involved, Christian made a remarkable decision. Instead of keeping the proceeds for himself,

The yardage sign read 150 yards — a perfect distance for a precisely struck mid-iron. Jojo selected his trusty Yamaha Inpres 8-iron and addressed his Titleist Pro V1 No. 4 ball. He executed a smooth, deliberate swing.

The ball launched high against the clear blue sky, a white blur tracking

he donated the funds to benefit other cancer patients from St. Luke’s Medical Center, St. Michael’s Cancer Center, and AFPMC (Armed Forces of the Philippines Medical Center).

That moment of selflessness redefined what “ECP” stood for.

From Edmond Christian Pangilinan, it became “Empowering Cancer Patients.”

Those who know Christian— fellow golfers, colleagues, and Spartan race teammates—weren’t surprised. His life has always been defined by resilience and heart. Even in his most di cult moments, he remains a source of strength for others.

“Christian taught us that courage isn’t about ghting your own battle,” one friend shared. “It’s about nding the strength to ght for others.”

Christian’s quiet humility and unwavering positivity have long inspired those around him. Through the ECP Cup, that inspiration now extends to strangers—patients he

perfectly toward the green. It landed softly, short of the pin, took two quick bounces, and then—in a moment of pure gol ng magic—disappeared.

An explosion of cheers shattered the silence of the afternoon. Jojo had made an ace.

The jubilant ight included his most treasured witnesses: his wife, Joanna

“Joy” Espino; their son, Rasheed; and friend, Rek Mise. But the celebratory shouts didn’t come only from his ightmates—they echoed across the course, breaking the stillness of an otherwise lazy Friday afternoon.

Shouts of disbelief and joy rang out among caddies and fellow golfers, cementing the moment as a true expression of celebration.

But Jojo’s October magic was far from over.

That hole-in-one was just the appetizer for what would become a phenomenal season start.

Riding the momentum of his amazing ace, he carried his sharp form into the season-opening competition later that week, clinching the prestigious Class D Gross crown in the first Monthly Medal tournament of Rancho Palos Verdes’ new season. From sinking the perfect shot to dominating his division, Jojo Espino’s remarkable week will surely be remembered in the RPVGC history books.

But who is Jojo Espino?

Known to most as Jojo—the highly effective Vice President of the “For the Boys” group, celebrated for its highprofile civic projects—he was more than a respected golf enthusiast.

Jojo’s heart found its truest purpose not inside the clubhouse or on the tee box, but under the searing heat of the sun, alongside the people who knew the course best: the caddies.

Despite his demanding duties, Jojo found time, religiously, for the Junior Golf program and the caddies of Palos Verdes. He wasn’t just a benefactor; he was a silent partner in their dreams. He would organize “Caddie Fun Golf” days and support in every way he could the programs that nurtured junior golfers in Palos Verdes. Espino proved that true leadership is found in the quiet, consistent act of lighting the path for others. His legacy at Palos Verdes wasn’t marked by his handicap, but by the number of young lives he helped keep on the fairway.

may never meet, yet whose lives will be touched by his generosity.

His story reminds us that illness may weaken the body, but it can also strengthen the spirit. It can awaken a deeper sense of gratitude and a erce desire to give back.

In Christian’s words, “We may not choose our battles, but we can choose how to face them—and who we ght for.”

The enigmatic black cats: Protectors or harbinger of ill fortune?

BLACK cats, with their sleek coats and piercing eyes, have long been subjects of fascination and superstition. Their presence has been interpreted as both a sign of good luck and a harbinger of misfortune, depending on cultural context and historical period.

Historical and Cultural Perspectives

The symbolism associated with black cats varies significantly across cultures. In many Western societies, particularly during the Middle Ages, black cats were linked to witchcraft and evil spirits. This association stemmed from their nocturnal habits, their ability to move silently, and their perceived independence. As mentioned in the article, "The Power of Black Cats" from Mount St. Joseph University, the connection between black cats and witches was further solidified

by the belief that witches could transform into black cats to carry out their nefarious deeds. This association led to widespread persecution of both cats and those accused of witchcraft, solidifying the black cat's negative reputation.

However, in other cultures, black cats are viewed as symbols of good fortune. In Japan, for instance, a black cat crossing your path is considered a sign of good luck, particularly for single women. Similarly, in parts of the United Kingdom and Ireland, a black cat

light the subjective nature of superstition and the influence of cultural context on our interpretation of symbols.

The Protective Qualities of Black Cats

The mystique of black cats often intertwines with beliefs about their protective capabilities, a notion deeply embedded in various cultural narratives. Their inherent connection to the night, a period synonymous with the unknown and the mystical, lends them an aura of being attuned to the spiritual plane. This perception fuels the idea that black cats can act as silent guardians, actively repelling malevolent spirits and negative energies from their homes and families.

As detailed in the article "If a Black Cat Crosses Your Path" from Cats Protection, this protective attribute is not a global constant but rather a culturally specific interpretation. In certain traditions, these ebony felines are revered as domestic sentinels, adept at absorbing adverse energies and creating a sanctuary of well-being for those they share their lives with, embodying a quiet yet potent form of safeguarding.

Black Cats and the Supernatural

The link between black cats and the supernatural is a recurring motif woven throughout folklore and popular culture. Their inherent nocturnal nature and enigmatic demeanor have long fueled speculation about their capacity to perceive or even interact with the spectral realm. As highlighted in the article, "Can Cats See Ghosts and Spirits?" from Daily Paws, the question of whether cats possess the ability to perceive the paranormal is explored in depth. While scientific evidence remains elusive in validating such claims, the article suggests that cats' highly developed senses and sensitivity to subtle environmental changes may contribute to the widespread perception that they are aware of things beyond human perception.

Furthermore, the belief that black cats, in particular, possess heightened psychic abilities is often attributed to their association with the night and the unseen. This belief often stems from the notion that these

spirits, effectively allowing them to function as protectors of their human companions. This perception is further enhanced by their mysterious and often solitary nature, adding to the mystique and the belief that they possess a deeper understanding of the world beyond our immediate senses.

Scientific Perspectives

It’s important to acknowledge that the belief in the protective powers of black cats is primarily based on superstition and cultural traditions. There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that black cats can ward off evil or interact with the supernatural. However, the study of animal behavior and perception offers some insights into the cat's unique abilities.

Cats, in general, have highly developed senses, including excellent night vision and a keen sense of hearing. They are also known for their ability to detect subtle changes in their environment, such as air currents and vibrations. These abilities may contribute to the perception that cats are aware of things that humans cannot perceive.

The perception of black cats as protectors or harbingers of ill fortune is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon. Their symbolism varies significantly across cultures and historical periods, reflecting the subjective nature of superstition and the influence of cultural context. While there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that black cats can ward off evil or interact with the supernatural, their association with mystery, the night, and the unseen has led to the development of numerous myths and legends. Whether viewed as symbols of good luck or bad omens, black cats continue to captivate our imaginations and remind us of the enduring power of folklore and cultural traditions.

The sweet truth: The role of sweets in canine diets

First of two parts

THE bond between humans and dogs is often characterized by affection, companionship, and, let us be honest, the occasional treat. While the impulse to share a sweet treat with a beloved canine companion is understandable, it is crucial to understand the potential ramifications of such actions.

The Allure of Sweets

The sight of a dog's eager face, tail wagging in anticipation, can be difficult to resist. Furthermore, many commercially available dog treats contain added sugars, leading owners to believe that a little bit of sweetness is acceptable. However, it is essential

to recognize that dogs and humans have different nutritional needs and metabolisms. What might be a harmless indulgence for a human can pose serious health risks for a dog.

Potential Health Hazards

The consumption of sweets by dogs can lead to a range of health problems. As discussed in the article, "Do you have a habit of dropping sweets on your dog or cat? Don't! Sweets are almost poison to them and trigger dangerous diseases – this is why it’s best to avoid giving sweets to four-legged animals," published by Clinicalaveterinaria.it, sweets can trigger dangerous diseases in dogs.

Weight Gain and Obesity: Sugary treats are often high in calories but offer little nutritional value. Regu-

lar consumption can contribute to weight gain, increasing the risk of obesity. Obesity in dogs is linked to a multitude of health issues, including joint problems, diabetes, and heart disease.

Dental Problems: Just as in humans, sugar can wreak havoc on a dog's teeth. Bacteria in the mouth feed on sugar, producing acids that erode tooth enamel, leading to cavities and dental disease. This can cause pain, infection, and tooth loss.

Diabetes: The excessive intake of sugar can lead to insulin resistance, increasing the risk of diabetes mellitus. This chronic condition requires lifelong management and can significantly impact a dog's quality of life.

Pancreatitis: Some sweets contain high levels of fat, which can trigger pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas. This condition can cause severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and even death.

Toxic Ingredients: Many sweets

contain ingredients that are toxic to dogs. Chocolate, in particular, contains theobromine, a substance that dogs cannot metabolize effectively. The severity of chocolate toxicity depends on the type and amount of chocolate consumed, but it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heart rate, seizures, and even death. Other potentially dangerous ingredients include xylitol (an artificial sweetener), grapes, raisins, and macadamia nuts.

GMA Playlist singers and Sparkle artists Akira Kurata, Shaun Salvador, and Seb Pajarillo are showcasing the dynamic range of Original Pilipino Music (OPM) with their new singles, each representing a different stage of a relationship.

Kurata’s debut single, “Dahil Sa’yo,” captures the pure, high-energy excitement of falling in love. The upbeat pop track portrays the initial stage of a relationship, highlighting the sheer joy and vibrancy of a newfound romance.

Kurata, a winner of the GMA Playlist Choice Award, said she wants listeners to feel happy and full of love.

“‘Dahil Sa’yo’ is not a slow song. It’s a song that you can dance to while singing. I hope it makes the listeners want to celebrate love,” he said.

Shaun Salvador’s track, “Get Through,” shifts the focus to the middle stage of love—the effort and commitment required to sustain a relationship through difficulties. The single is a raw, relatable anthem for couples trying to hold on.

SHOWBIZ

Unpacking the stages of love with new romantic anthems

“It’s a real conversation between two people trying to save their love. It captures the exact moment when you’re still holding on to hope even if things are falling apart,” Salvador said, adding that the single also talks about the importance of perseverance and making love worth fighting for.

Completing the story is Seb Pajarillo’s soulful ballad, “Guhit,” which translates to “stroke” or “mark.” The single explores the aftermath of love, focusing on the lasting imprints and memories that remain long after a relationship ends.

Seb’s vocals convey the melancholy of looking back on memories, both the heartbreaks and the triumphs.

“The song is about the memories that stay with us. This song is a reminder that not every love story disappears completely, they just turn into beautiful memories,” he said.

All three singles are now available on digital platforms worldwide.

Sisters with talent in their DNA

T MIGHT have seemed expected that sisters Ezri, Julia, and Tasha Mitra would follow the family footsteps into showbiz. After all, they are the daughters of Cacai Velasquez and Raul Mitra and nieces of Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid

Yet the trio insists that their love for performing grew naturally, not because of family pressure. Recently, they have begun to show that even in a famous musical family, a passion for performing can develop on its own terms and perhaps in ways that are even more exciting to watch.

Julia, the middle sister, recalls a childhood filled with dancing, singing, and even impromptu runway shows.

“We loved performing as kids, but we didn’t take it seriously because our mother didn’t want us in showbiz. We found ways to perform at school instead,” she explains, remembering

how the trio’s early passion quietly bloomed away from the spotlight. For the youngest sister, Tasha, watching their aunt and father in action inspired rather than pushed them.

“We weren’t forced; it felt natural, and we grew to love it,” she adds.

On Oct. 29, the sisters made a lively appearance at Star Magic’s Spotlight Presscon, bringing energy and charm to the event while giving fans a taste of what to expect from their music. Their session started with the eldest sister, Ezri, describing the story behind their group name.

“DNA refers to the genetic kind of DNA. We chose it because it represents our bond as sisters. Music runs in our blood—it’s in our DNA.” The trio recently released their debut single, “Don’t Ask Me Why,” featuring an upbeat pop sound with touches of R&B, rap, and hip-hop. The song was released under ABSCBN Music’s Star Pop label.

Despite their famous family, the sisters emphasize that music was a personal choice. They tease plans for an EP or album, expected in the second quarter of next year.

Characters are often driven by survival, conscience, or love, showing that violence is rarely about triumph but about necessity. In John Wick, grief and loss fuel precision and controlled fury, continuing the legacy Rambo began. Today’s action heroes—hitmen, vigilantes, and soldiers with scars—carry the same emotional depth, showing that their journeys are shaped as much by memory and pain as by combat. Four decades later, action films feature tighter choreography and quieter heroes, but the emotional core remains. The Rambo series—First Blood, First Blood Part II, and Rambo III—is now streaming on Lionsgate Play via PLDT Home, Cignal, and Smart, alongside other character-driven action titles.

AT FIRST light, when the resort is still quiet and the sun is a soft promise on the water, you might see her walking the tide line.

Alexis Duran , the in-house marine biologist at Manami Resort, often begins her day this way, not as a duty, but as a conversation.

Enhancing its position as the first luxury nature resort in Sipalay, Manami Resort proudly unveils the Balas Dive and Experience Center, designed to bring guests closer to the marine magic that surrounds the property.

As property head Giro Solatorio says, “With the launch of the Balas Dive and Experience Center, Manami Resort invites guests to discover what truly makes Sipalay, the Jewel of Sugar Island, shine beneath the surface. Accredited by PCCSDI and recognized as an SDI TDI Dive Resort, Balas offers a professional yet personal approach to exploring the underwater world.”

The center is guided by a passionate local team comprising three dive professionals, two dive masters, and one rescue diver, who also serves as the resort’s marine biologist. Guests can choose from a full range of dive courses, from

introductory Discovery Dives to Dive Master certification, along with Nitrox (enriched air) options and complete gear rentals.

Beyond the familiar sites, the waters of Sipalay and neighboring Hinoba-an remain largely untouched and are home to pristine coral gardens, flourishing marine life, and unexplored dive spots waiting to be unveiled.

“When I was three years old, the Disney movie Finding Nemo came out in cinemas. I was fascinated by the marine animals and coral reefs I saw on the big screen, as I had never seen the sea look like that before underwater. My young mind couldn’t grasp that the film was not just a cartoon but was based on a real-life ecosystem until I watched the documentary Blue Planet , narrated by David Attenborough, on our television. promised myself I would see a real coral reef with my own eyes one day.

When my family visited Boracay the following year, we went snorkeling, and I remember feeling completely at peace as I watched the fish swim around me. Every time I snorkel or dive, I still hear that same Finding Nemo theme in my head. It’s the sound of wonder that first drew me to the ocean, and it’s what keeps me there today,” Duran shares.

Upon discovering a damaged patch of flowerpot corals near the shore, Duran began a hands-on restoration project. She secured broken fragments and relocated vulnerable colonies to a safer, designated coral garden. Through regular monitoring, she manually cleared algae and introduced sea urchins for natural control. Her persistent efforts have successfully transformed the once-trampled site into a thriving, resilient coral garden.

At Manami Resort, the in-house Marine Biologist connects guests with the coast’s vibrant life, guiding snorkeling, intertidal, and kayak excursions through reefs, seagrass, and mangroves. Her goal is to inspire wonder that leads to understanding, believing a personal connection with the ocean drives conservation.

Sipalay City, in the biodiverse Coral Triangle along the Sulu Sea, forms a vital but underappreciated coastal region with Cauayan and Hinoba-an. Its reefs, seagrass beds, and mangroves support rich marine life and maintain ecological balance. Yet much of the coastline is unexplored, and Marine Protected Areas lack strong enforcement. Protecting these ecosystems is essential for fisheries, coastal safety, and sustainable tourism.

Manami Resort’s daily efforts form a crucial thread in this conservation tapestry. By embedding sustainability and genuine marine conservation into its design, the resort shows that the future of travel lies not just in visiting a place, but in helping preserve it.
