PH, AUSTRALIA TO HOLD JOINT PATROLS IN WPS

GILAS: WE WILL FIGHT UNTIL WE NO LONGER CAN SPORTS | C4

AS US LAWMAKERS VOW MILITARY SUPPORT UNDER MDT

By Macon Ramos-Araneta

HE Philippines and Australia will “soon” hold joint patrols in the West Philippine Sea where tensions have been high over increased Chinese incursions in the area. “We are working closely together. Doing joint sails is something that we’ve been keen to pursue now for some time. The two defense forces have been working together to make that happen and to do that in the

most effective way,” Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense chief Richard Marles said. “We’re really pleased with the progress of the discussions. We expect the first of those joint patrols to hap-

pen in the not too distant future,” Mar Marles added. US Congress’ commitment As this developed, visiting US lawmak lawmakers committed American military action to defend the Philippines under the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty if Filipino forces came under an armed attack. “We stand in full support to honor our commitment to stand by your sovereignty and security,” Illinois Rep. Jonathan Jackson said in an interview with GMA News. “Congress will stand united in supporting that, yes, and that includes at-

tacks on Philippine vessels,” said California Rep. Young Kim. “We are united in the House as well as I would speak for the Senate and say that we are united against the aggressiveness not only here but the aggressiveness that we see with the PRC (China) throughout the world right now. So, it is important that we support the Philippines because we can’t allow China or any other country to decide that they want to engage in lawless activities and that’s exactly what we see going on,” added Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett.

DOJ FILES CRIMINAL RAPS VS. TEVES FOR DEGAMO MURDER CASE By Joel E. Zurbano THE Justice department on Saturday said it has filed criminal charges against expelled lawmaker Arnolfo Teves Jr. in connection with the killing of Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo in March. DOJ spokesman Mico Clavano said an arrest

warrant will soon be issued against Teves for murder, frustrated murder and attempted murder cases before the Manila Regional Trial Court. “The Degamo case has already been filed in Manila. It is before the court and we are awaiting the issu issuance of a warrant of arrest,” Clavano said in a press fo forum yesterday. Pending the issuance of a warrant of arrest, Clavano said the

Members of the Manila Police District prepare signages to mark the start of the ComelecPNP checkpoint on Aug. 28, 2023. The checkpoints for the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections will last for three months or until Nov. 30. Norman Cruz

solon, who has yet to return to the Philippines, could not be labeled as a fugitive. Teves has been tagged as “one of the masterminds” in the killing of Degamo as well as for the deaths of nine other persons and the injuries sustained by 18 individuals. Teves, who has since been expelled as Negros Oriental lawmaker, has denied the allegations. On May 17, the National Bureau of Investigation submitted to the DOJ

the criminal complaints against Teves for his alleged involvement in killing of Degamo and nine other people in Pamplona town in Negros Oriental. Teves is also facing multiple murder complaints in Bayawan town for the killing of Negros Oriental board member Miguel Dungog and two others in 2019. The DoJ will ask the Supreme Court to order the transfer of the trial venue to Manila, Clavano said.

TYPHOON “Goring” continued to intensify while moving southward over the sea east of Cagayan and may reach super typhoon category on Monday, the state weather bureau said. “Due to the highly favorable environment, ‘Goring’ is forecast to steadily intensify throughout most of the forecast period and may reach super typhoon category on Monday,” PAGASA said yesterday. Tropical cyclone wind signal no. 3 was raised over the northeastern portion of Cagayan and extreme eastern portion of Isabela.

‘ADJUSTMENT’ NEEDED IN MUST-WIN TUSSLE VS. ANGOLA By Peter Atencio THERE are only two remaining games which Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes hopes to tuck away in a bid to keep the team’s chances of making it to the Olympics in Paris in 2024. The 8 p.m. date with Angola tonight (Sunday) at the Smart Araneta Coliseum is a game Gilas could not afford to lose. Another loss will relegate Gilas to the bottom of Group A, making the team kiss goodbye the next phase of

the FIBA World Cup. “It’s a different team, but Angola pressures the ball as much as the Dominican Republic did so definitely, we have to make some adjustments in our offense,” said Reyes of the error-prone Gilas Pilipinas. “We had 19 turnovers and that was big. We shot the ball well. We shot the ball better than Dominican (Republic), but they got a lot more attempts than we did so the story was the 19 turnovers and we gave up 17 offensive rebounds and that was it,” Reyes said.

Observers said players’ rotation is something that Reyes should also look into. While his two big men, AJ Edub and June Mar Fajardo, sparkled on both ends of the floor, and the ever-reliable Jordan Clarkson shone with 28 markers, Reyes failed to maximize Kai Sotto who only saw action for 73 seconds. Slasher CJ Perez did not see action at all while Kiefer Ravena was playing well before he was taken out and was not given much exposure thereafter.
