THE heightened tensions between Beijing and Taipei has prompted a coalition of Filipino communities in Taiwan to set a virtual meeting today (Sunday) with the Manila Economic and Cultural Office to discuss evacuation plans in case the conflict escalates. This as Taiwan accused the Chinese army of simulating an invasion on its main island as Beijing doubled down on its retaliation for US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei after announcing a suspension of cooperation with Washington on key issues. “We have fears that is why we will hold a Zoom meeting with MECO... We need to know the evacuation plan in case the threat escalates,” Mercedita Kuan, secretary-

general of Filcom Taiwan Northern, told ABS-CBN’s TeleRadyo in an interview Saturday. Taipei residents, Kuan said, have been advised to download a government app that identifies some 5,771 shelters in the event of an invasion. There are over 100,000 Filipinos working and staying in Taiwan, of which some 8,000 are undocumented, Kuan said. MECO chairman Silvestre Bello III said his office and that of threePhilippine Overseas Labor Offices (POLOs) in Taipei, Kaohsiung and Taichung have always been prepared for any scenario. VICE President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte-Carpio has asked the Department of Health not to tap teachers for its vaccination program in schools as they prepare for the opening of classes this month. “Vice President reminded us to spare our public school teachers from our vaccination program in schools as they have several tasks during the start of the school year,” DOH officer-in-charge Rosario Vergeire said “So we will be coordinating with the Department of Interior and Local Government so that the local government healthcare workers will be the ones

to do the vaccination in schools,” she added. Schools have been identified as venues for the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots as cases continue to increase amid waning immunity and the presence of several Omicron subvariants. DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa earlier said COVID-19 vaccination is still not mandatory for students who will be participating in face-to-face classes. VerAs part of the health protocols, Ver geire said there would be safety officers in schools to monitor the students, teachers and non-teaching personnel. CONTINUED ON 3A

Padilla eyes Philippine History subject back in HS curriculum S

n By JOEL E. ZURBANO

ENATOR Robinhood Padilla eyes the restoration of the subject Philippine History high school curriculum, saying it will guide the youth in shaping the country and people. Padilla filed Senate Bill 451 seeking the teaching of Philippine History to “help the youth in understanding how the society we live in came to be through time.” “To lead this nation into the future would require an understanding of the country’s historical roots and cultural heritage in ideally all levels of formal education,” the actor-turned-politician said. The Philippine History subject was removed

from the high school curriculum in 2014 through Department of Education Order No. 20. Padilla noted the K-12 basic education curriculum for Social Studies includes subjects such as Asian Studies and World History. “While supporters of this revised curriculum claim that the ‘discussion of events on the country’s history is naturally integrated into several subjects,’ this representation is of the firm belief that there must be an independent and

definitive subject that comprehensively focuses on the study of our nation’s own history,” he said. “It is truly unfortunate for our youth, whom we dub as the hope and future of our nation, to be stripped of the opportunity to wade through the books of our invaluable past,” he added. Under the bill, Philippine History would be designed to inculcate a sense of patriotism, to include the history, culture and identity of the Bangsamoro and indigenous peoples. The bill also aims to generate “critical thinking and discourse” on the effects and relevance of Philippine historical events, persons and movements to the present - and understand the Filipinos’ roots grounded on facts and strong historical tradition, patriotism and identity as a nation.

A BICOL congressman on Saturday renewed his appeal to the the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to collaborate to prepare the business sector against online threats. Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte made the appeal in the wake of reports indicating that one out of every two small and medium enter-

Villafuerte cited the need for DTI Secretary Alfredo Pascual and DICT Secretary Ivan John Enrile Uy to complement their campaign to encourage SMEs to shift to digital platforms with a massive information drive underscoring the need to shield these enterprises’ respective systems from cyber criminals. “The DTI should team up with the DICT to ensure that these digital platforms are safe and secure from

A TRANSPORT advocacy group has appealed to Congress to prioritize bills seeking to legalize motorcycle taxis to help commuters cope with the current transportation crisis. The Passenger Forum (TPF) convenor Primo Morillo said “allowing motorcycle taxis will give us a much-needed supply of public transport options at a time when there is an apparent deficit.” “This almost became law in the 18th Congress through the efforts of almost 20 authors in the House, along with Senate Public Services Committee chair Grace Poe. Morillo explained that the proposal would also help the government’s job generation program without costing the government anything while widening the government’s tax base. “The legalization of MC taxis will help the economy over-all. Commuting workers will get to their places of work faster, thousands of riders will have jobs, and the government will receive the taxes from all these transactions,” he said.

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expects stronger bilateral relations between the Philippines and India following his talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Meanwhile, Marcos' fourth Cabinet meeting on Friday discussed how the government could assist agrarian reform beneficiaries. "We are glad to have talked with Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the phone. We will ensure that our good relations with India will be strengthened," the President said in his Instagram post on Saturday. "I’m sure it will mean improved relations with India,” Marcos said in his Facebook post. During the phone conversation, the two leaders reviewed various areas of cooperation and "expressed satisfaction at the rapid growth of bilateral relations between the two countries in recent years," according to a press statement released by India's Ministry of External Affairs. "The Prime Minister also assured President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. of India’s full support in his plans and projects for the Philippines’ development,” it stated. Malacañang said among the interventions deliberated upon was the crafting of a measure on the condonation of payments for the amortization fees and interests on the farmers’ loans, as well as providing legal help for farmers involved in land disputes. The Palace added that beneficiaries could also be given modern farm equipment and credit assistance.

THE Philippine Embassy in Israel has warned Filipinos to stay away from the Golan Heights and places near the Lebanon-Gaza borders where tensions heightened between the Israelis and the Palestinians. The embassy issued the advisory on Saturday as tensions flared between Palestinian militants and Israelis troops after the latter launched an airstrike on “Islamic Jihad targets in the Gaza Strip.” The strike reportedly left a top commander of a Palestinian militant group and nine others, including a five-year-old child dead, triggering a retaliatory rocket barrage. “Remain alert and refrain from going to sensitive areas like Golan Heights, areas near the Lebanon border, and the Gaza border,” the Philippine Embassy said. Citing the Home Front Command, the embassy said educational activities were prohibited in the Gaza Envelope and South Israel. The embassy likewise urged Filipinos to take necessary precautions when riding public vehicles, and refrain from going to crowded places as much as possible. The United Nations described the continuing escalation of tensions in the region as “very dangerous,” and urged concerned parties to immediately halt the rocket launch. “The launching of rockets must cease immediately and I call on all sides to avoid further escalation,” Tor Wennesland, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, said Saturday. “The progress made in gradually opening Gaza since the end of May escalation risks being undone, leading to even greater humanitarian needs at a time when global resources are stretched and international financial support for a renewed humanitarian effort in Gaza will not be easily available,” he said.

Frozen US-China ties present new hitch for global warming

B

EIJING is freezing its cooperation with Washington on global warming, but experts are hoping that, for the sake of humanity, the cold spell between the world’s two largest emitters is only temporary.

The unraveling relationship comes not long after China and the United States announced a surprise agreement to strengthen climate action at the UN COP26 climate conference in Glasgow in 2021. US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan this week, however, has prompted Beijing to end cooperation with the United States on several key issues. “It’s obviously worrying and raises concerns,” Alden Meyer, a senior associate at the E3G think tank told AFP. It’s “impossible to address the climate emergency if the world’s number one and number two economies and number one and number two emitters are not taking action,” he said. “And it’s always preferable that they do that in a collaborative way.” Cooperation between the two countries is essential on all of the world’s “most pressing problems,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ press secretary told reporters on Friday. Above all, China’s announcement raises questions, including what the consequences will be for the COP27 climate conference in Egypt in November. “What are the conditions to reopen dialogues? Are these conditions climate or geopolitical?” Greenpeace’s Li Shuo asked on Twitter. “Is this a tactical move or is it a longer term strategic move?” questioned Meyer. “Is China saying the cooperation is impossible as long as there are tensions between the US and China?” AFP

FromtheFRONTPAGE PH-US... “I think this is an issue which we can continue to explore bilaterally,” Manalo said. The Philippines has filed several diplomatic protests against China’s incursions in the West Philippine Sea. The proposal for joint patrols was earlier affirmed in 2016 under the administration of the late President Benigno Aquino III. In a statement last year, Aquino’s Foreign Affairs Secretary, Albert del Rosario, said he met with Blinken, then Deputy Secretary of State, twice in Washington on the joint patrols agreement, which he said was shelved by the Duterte administration, “fearing that China would be displeased.” Blinken said Washington will help “preserve and protect the Philippines’ precious maritime resources … (which) are under threat from illegal fishing and environmental destruction by outside actors.” Blinked also expressed the commitment of the United States to de-escalate tensions over the Taiwan Strait to keep the region, including the Philippines, safe. “Maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is vital not only for Taiwan but for the Philippines and many other countries. What happens to the Taiwan Strait affects the entire region and in many ways affects the entire world like the South China Sea is a critical waterway,” he said. China earlier announced it is cutting off contacts with Washington on key issues, including defense and climate change cooperation, in retaliation to US House

Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. The mainland also held its largest military drill near the self-governing island on Thursday, firing live missiles and deploying fighter jets. In his meeting with Marcos, Blinken underscored the “strong” alliance between the two treaty allies. “I believe it can grow even stronger,” Blinken told Marcos at the presidential palace. Marcos hailed the “special relationship” between the two countries. Marcos told Blinken he believes the tensions in the Taiwan Strait did not heighten in intensity – rather, it showed how deep the conflict already is. AFP

OFWs... Bello said: “Places of work and factories [have been] required ever since to have shelter and food provision for at least two weeks.” Relations between the two superpowers have nosedived in the wake of Pelosi’s trip to China’s self-ruled neighbor – which it claims as its territory – prompting calls from the UN for an urgent de-escalation of tensions. Beijing on Saturday continued some of its largest-ever military drills around Taiwan – exercises aimed at practicing a blockade and ultimate invasion of the island, analysts say. Taipei said it observed “multiple” Chinese planes and ships operating in the Taiwan Strait, believing them to be simulating an attack on the self-ruled democracy’s main island. “Multiple batches of Communist planes and ships conducting activities around the Taiwan Strait, some of which crossed the

NORTH Korea on Saturday slammed US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over her recent visit to the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone, calling her the “worst destroyer of international peace.” Pelosi, who visited Seoul earlier this week following a trip to Taiwan, became the highest-ranking US official to visit the Joint Security Area (JSA) between the two Koreas since then-president Donald Trump met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un there in 2019. Prior to the JSA visit, Pelosi discussed the “grave situation” and growing threat posed by the North’s nuclear weapons programme with her South Korean counterpart, National Assembly Speaker Kim Jinpyo. The pair called for “strong and extended deterrence against North Korea,” and vowed to support efforts by Washington and Seoul to achieve Pyongyang’s denuclearisation. The North on Saturday denounced Pelosi for both her discussions with Kim and her visit to the JSA. On top of the deterrence talks, Pelosi “made her appearance even in the joint security area of Panmunjom, utterly betraying the vision of the hostile policy of the current U.S. administration towards the DPRK,” said Jo Yong Sam, an official at North Korea’s foreign ministry, using the North’s official name. A TOP official involved in Taiwan’s missile production died of heart problems on Saturday, the army-owned institute where he worked said,as China conducts massive military drills around the self-ruled island. Ouyang Li-hsing was vice president of the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology and had travelled to the south of the island for business, Taiwan’s Central News Agency reported. In a statement posted on its website, the institute confirmed Ouyang was found unconscious at a hotel in Hengchun, Pingtung County on Saturday morning. “Forensic examination found that the cause of death was myocardial infarction and angina pectoris,” it said. Ouyang assumed his position

earlier this year and was tasked with supervising “the production of various types of missiles,” CNA said. His death comes as Beijing presses ahead with exercises aimed at practising a blockade and ultimate invasion of the democratic island after the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi enraged the Chinese government. Beijing flew several missiles directly over Taiwan’s main island in the drills, Chinese state media said Friday. But Taipei has refused to confirm or deny the flight paths, citing intelligence concerns. In a bid to show just how close China’s forces have been getting to Taiwan’s shores, Beijing’s military overnight released a video of an air force pilot filming the island’s coastline and mountains from his cockpit. And the Eastern Command of the Chinese army shared a photo it said was taken of a warship patrolling in seas near Taiwan, the island’s shoreline clearly visible in the background. According to Xinhua, Beijing has mobilized more than 100 planes and more than 10 frigates and destroyers – including the J-20 stealth fighter and a Type 055 destroyer, the crown jewels of China’s air and naval forces. The vaccines have saved millions of lives and supported our economy and health system,” Manalo said. Blinken on Saturday led the ceremonial turnover of additional COVID-19 aid to the Philippines at the Manila Zoo where he was joined by US Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson, Department of Health officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire, and Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna for a pediatric vaccination activity. “These donations from the US government equate to a massive improvement in the country’s COVID-19 response. These include plans to procure an entire fleet of electric vehicles for the city government and the use of solar panels in public schools and government offices to minimize energy consumption and ensure continuity of services during calamities. Makati has been consistently addressing climate change concerns since Binay assumed office in 2016. With the declaration, the city chief executive said she wants to see the active involvement of the business sector, communities, and other stakeholders. "We call upon everyone to come together and act now. We must ensure aggressive application of the whole-of-society approach in combating climate change. We heard the data. Aboitiz, Pilmico sustain support to rebuild Cebu

AUGUST 7, 2022

By Othel V. Campos ABOITIZ Foundation Inc. and Pilmico Foods Corp. teamed up with RAFI Microfinance Inc. to help rebuild Cebu through “Padayon sa Pagbugsay” (paddle unceasingly) which was rolled out in July in the municipalities of Liloan and Carcar, Cebu. Aboitiz Foundation, Aboitiz Group’s corporate social responsibility unit and Pilmico, the food and agribusiness subsidiary of the Aboitiz Group, together Aboitiz Power’s Visayan Electric continue to uphold the #RebuildCebu campaign. Aboitiz Foundation president and chief operating officer Maribeth Marasigan said the conglomerate stayed true to its promise to help the victims of Typhoon Odette, who, up to this day, have yet to fully recover from the devastation brought by the typhoon in December 2021. “We want to see the communities rise from the aftermath of this disaster. Our goal is to help them recover and become more resilient communities. We thank our local partners, the Aboitiz business units, who came together to extend valuable assistance,” Marasigan said. The event will benefit families from different areas in Central Visayas which include Argao, Carcar City, Compostela, Liloan, Naga City, Sibonga, San Fernando and Catigbian in Cebu and Dimiao and Sikatuna in Bohol. Aboitiz donated three types of livelihood kits. Project Bacon is a donation of high-breed gilts, while Project Omelette is an egg-laying machine with ready-to-lay hens. Bistro Group empowers women in the workplace W

ORKPLACES saw remarkable improvements towards giving women greater responsibility in otherwise male-dominated industries. This prefigures well for talented, driven females who are looking to succeed with their passion, dedication and skill sets.

Companies like The Bistro Group believe in how equality and inclusivity are keys to achieving a more diverse and healthier workplace. In its ecosystem, women—from servers to those in the top echelon—are empowered within their scope of responsibilities, enabling them to make sound decisions for the good of the company. Women on top Coming from this mindset, Bistro promoted five women—RC Tiongson (chief operating officer for TGIFridays, Denny’s, Bulgogi, Watami, Hard

Rock Café, Randy’s Doughnuts and Olive Garden); Guia Abuel (COO for Italiannis, Texas Roadhouse, El Pollo Loco, Modern Shanghai, Fish & Co, Buffalo Wild Wings Ember, Savage, Helm and Test Kitchen; Patty Joaquin-Publico (chief finance officer); Marilu Rivera (chief people and culture officer); and Lisa Ronquillo-Along (chief marketing officer)— to top executive positions. For them, climbing the corporate ladder came with its own set of challenges. They worked their way to the top, rose from the ranks, persevered and was rightfully rewarded for their skills, determination and hard work. Tiongson was first hired as a “practicumer” in 1998, before becoming a server, management trainee, restaurant manager, general manager and director for operations. After 24 years, she was promoted as COO, handling seven restaurant concepts. When asked why they chose to stay in Bistro after all these years, these ladies attributed their loyalty to the unique corporate culture as the company encourages empowerment regardless of gender and rewards good performance. They have harnessed their strengths

as women as the company recognizes each employee’s abilities and contributions. Another factor that ‘sealed’ the deal for them is that company values are aligned with theirs—which basically is about service, giving their best every day. This is ingrained in Bistro’s people-focused philosophy. They say that at The Bistro Group, teamwork is strong, with a feeling of belongingness because everyone does not back down on work, even the bosses. This is apparent in the way the company cultivates a supportive working environment that lets people shine, no matter the position. It is a dynamic and innovative organization that makes work very exciting. Small wonder why these women believe that they belong in The Bistro Group EmpowHER Encouraging and valuing women, promoting them to leadership roles alongside their male counterparts, is showcasing different styles of leadership in the organization. Women don’t have to adopt masculine behaviors to be successful, as they have the same empathy, confidence, plus their intuition that could drive the company to its ultimate growth.

Digital startup helps store owners DIGITAL startup Packworks aims to empower store-owners beyond the traditional supply and logistics chain with the introduction of the SuperStore app—an online hub where members enjoy the ease of end-to-end business transactions. Through the app, store owners can process their business’ inventory, bookkeeping and data collection. They can also avail of financial products and order supplies for a cheaper price without the hassle of coordinating and purchasing new stocks. Packworks founders Hubert Yap, Bing Tan and Ibba Bernardo came up with the idea as they faced similar experiences growing up with entrepreneur parents. “We observed that small stores have a hard time tracking their inventories and getting supplies for their stores, especially the ones in the provinces. That’s when the idea of making a onestop app for everything pops out,” said Tan. Witnessing firsthand the challenges brought by limited access to sari-sari store owners, especially in far-flung places, the co-founders promised to share their technical know-how and inspire them to shift from analog processes to using technology. The app is easy to use with low band-

MORE than 25 retail and marketing experts will converge at the 28th National Retail Conference and Stores Asia Expo to help mentor local retailers as they get ready for robust growth amid new market conditions and forces brought about by the pandemic. The two-day NRCE, regarded as the biggest and most important retail industry event in the country, is happening on-site on Aug. 11 and 12 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. The Philippine Retailers Association, the organizer of the event, chose the theme “Retail: Ready, Re/set/ GROW!” to reflect the market conditions and the need for all industry players to retool and grow with the help of each other. NRCE 2022 overall chairman and Rustan Commercial Corp. president Donnie Tantoco, said a part of this is the need for more extensive learning sessions among retailers and their allied industries. “This is why this year’s edition of the event features an ‘NRCE Retail Mentorship Program’, where industry leaders will be able to provide an exclusive two-way learning setup, and wherein the mentor and mentee will have a healthy exchange of ideas as well as sharing of relevant experiences that will aid both careers and businesses. The times are now changing, so the industry needs new knowledge and strategies as well,” Tantoco said. Tantoco, with the help of the rest of the NRCE Conference chairmen—Sam Gregory Lim, vice president of Blims Lifestyle Group and Bryan Liu, vice president for strategy and operations of Penshoppe Group with the PRA board of directors, chose the experts who will present at the NRCE to ensure that the event could provide fresh and valuable insights for the attendees. The NRCE, the longest-running retail industry event in the Philippines, has been the goto event for like-minded businessmen in the country to uncover valuable trends, developments, and innovations in the retail arena. On Day 1, PRA president Rosemarie Bosch Ong, who’s also the senior executive vice president and COO of Wilcon Depot Inc., will lead the new retail mentorship program with Steven Cua of Pag-asa, Louella Scott of Vogue Concepts and Joy Polloso of Shangri-la Plaza. A host of competent retailers will also be featured for the rest of the first day including Chay Mondejar-Saputil, eCommerce and retail vertical lead of Meta Philippines who will be talking about the metaverse as a blueprint for business. Meta has been taking strides to usher in “a future where people have more ways to play and connect in the metaverse,” and this is evident in their projects to support Philippine businesses. Gary De Ocampo, president and managing director of Kantar Philippines, will talk about consumer trends in retail. Kantar is a leading data, insights and consulting company that has been responsible for providing strategies for brand growth globally. Manila Water now serves 7 million customers METRO Manila’s east zone concessionaire Manila Water Company Inc. celebrated its 25th anniversary on Aug. 1 and acknowledged that its work will not be done without the solid alliances it has fostered. “None of these would have been possible if not for the strong collaboration and partnership through the 25 years, primarily with our regulator, MWSS and our national and local government partners, the business community, and of course, our customers and other stakeholders,” said Manila Water president and chief executive Jocot De Dios. Since its establishment in 1997, the company has maintained its mission of creating an exceptional customer experience in the provision of sustainable solutions vital to health and life. From its 3.1 million customers at the start of operations, Manila Water’s clients grew to seven million in 2021, reaching significant milestones such as residents gaining access to 24-hour water supply, expansion of water mains and distribution lines and more water delivered to customers. Systems losses or non-revenue water was significantly reduced, from a dismal

63 percent of production pre-1997 to the current world-class rate of 12 percent. This translates into increased operational efficiency and more water saved and subsequently distributed to customers. “Even during the height of the pandemic, we made sure to supply our customers with clean and safe water, 24/7. Whatever situation we find ourselves in, we remain relentless in improving our services and infrastructure to fulfill our commitments to our stakeholders and the environment,” De Dios said. Through the years, Manila Water’s capabilities have created positive transformations to water and wastewater system development and service delivery. It built water supply infrastructures such as the East La Mesa Water Treatment Plant and the Rizal Province Water Supply Improvement Project, central to which is the Cardona Water Treatment Plant, with one million and 788,000 household beneficiaries, respectively. It has also developed the Novaliches-Balara Aqueduct 4 project which ensures the continuity and reliability of raw water supply.

Manila Water aims to be the leading provider of wastewater and environmental services in the country and has built wastewater treatment infrastructures—including the North and South Pasig Sewer System with the Ilugin Sewage Treatment Plant, the Taguig North Sewage Treatment Plant and the Marikina North Sewerage System Project—with thousands of households expected to benefit from efficient sewerage services and cleaner rivers and waterways in the metro. Manila Water practiced community and customer engagement, seeking information directly from the ground to be able to deliver quality sewerage and sanitation service obligations to the entire East Zone concession. This initiative successfully addressed the problem even back in 1997, wherein only 3 percent of the population was connected to a sewerage system and 85 percent of Metro Manila homes relied only on septic tanks. Manila Water also capitalized on proactive technical solutions such as separate sewer system and combined sewer-drainage system. As of 2021, the east

zone had a total of 41 sewage treatment plants and two septage treatment plants. With its 78 vacuum tankers, the company also desludged more than two million households. Meanwhile, through its “Water for the Poor” (Tubig Para sa Barangay) program, nearly two million people from marginalized communities were granted access to potable supply and affordable water with adequate pressure. TPSB addresses various situations

prevalent in some communities, such as the so-called spaghetti or illegal water connections, low water pressure to no water, leaks and poor customer service in general. “This program provides a sustainable solution to one of the common problems in various communities across the country. TPSB addresses the water needs of low-income communities while reducing systems losses or water wastage,” said De Dios.

Filipinas leap to no. 53 in FIFA world ranking n By PETER ATENCIO SINCE their formation nine months ago, the Philippine national women’s football team has played more than enough matches to help fast track their growth. After playing 23 matches so far, the Filipinas have risen in ranking, leaping from no. 64 to no. 53 in the FIFA world rankings from December last year, to June this year. And it will most probably go up again following their qualification to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, their bronze medal finish in the recent Southeast Asian Games, and first ever title conquest

in the 2022 ASEAN Football Federation Women’s Championship. “We’ve played extraordinary game, 23 matches. The average for a national team is 8 to 12 matches,” said Stajcic. Their title win in the AFF is a special and memorable moment for the squad, which is now preparing to compete in the World Cup next year. “And in that short period of time that we already played 23 matches, in some respects, we are already fast-tracking their development,” added Stajic. The Filipinas are still on a break, and will soon resume training, and get ready to play friendly in the coming FIFA window in September, November and

December. The windows are international match calendar where members of national squads are released by their clubs so they can be available for call-ups. The Filipinas will have friendlies set between Sept. 19 to 27 in this year’s coming window. In these games, Stajcic believes that this will strengthen the resolve of the players, because they will no longer be look upon as underdogs in any tournaments and friendlies that they will join. “There’s no magic formula (in developing the team), other than playing more games, and keeping them together as a group,” added Stajcic.

HD Spikers survive Troopers

Ria Meneses of Cignal towers over Army’s MJ BalsePabayo and Ivy Perez to deliver one of her slew of quick attacks.

IN A tense-filled endgame of an energy-sapping match, Cignal HD kept its nerve in check and survived a defiant Army Black Mamba side, carving out a 26-24, 26-28, 25-18, 18-25, 16-14 decision in the Premier Volleyball League Invitational Conference semifinals at the Ynares Center in Antipolo on Saturda.y The HD Spikers recovered from a fourth set meltdown, fought back from two points down midway in the decider then held on after blowing three match points on Ces Molina’s kill and an Army attack error. Joanne Bunag and the rest of Lady Troopers contested the last call, claiming a block touch, but officials ruled otherwise, enabling the HD Spikers to escape with the win and get back into the thick of things at 1-1 after dropping a four-setter to the PLDT High Speed Hitters last Thursday. It was, however, an excruciating defeat for the Lady Troopers, who faded at the end of the pivotal third frame as fatigue kicked in following an exhausting back-to-back sets that went over the distance. But they picked up their second wind in the fourth set and kept their energy bursting in the fifth to grab an 8-6 lead. But the HD Spikers came out of the break smoking as Gel Cayuna and Rachel Anne Daquis keyed a big surge with two points apiece and Cignal went up again at 11-9 before a Ria Meneses quick attack coupled with a MJ Balse-Pabayo attack error put the team at match point, 14-11.

Candinato-Sara tandem tops Sambalilo Pro-Am golf RICAR Candinato drew more than what he had asked for from amateur partner Zeus Sara as they produced a stirring 11-under 61 in four-ball format as they crowned themselves the first Sambalilo Golf Pro-Am champion on Saturday at the Caliraya Springs Golf Club in Cavinti, Laguna. Sara, a 6-handicapper, churned out a brilliant nine-birdie stint as he practically steered his partnership with Candinato from two strokes down with a sustained assault on the par-72 layout. The Davaoeño ace bogeyed the first hole which Candinato saved then went on a birdie spree on Nos. 5, 8 and 9 before stringing four straight from No. 10. He capped his exploits with back-to-back birdies from No. 16 for the team’s 31-30 output. Counting their 63 in the scramble format Friday, the Candinato, who

birdied No. 4, and Sara pooled a 20-under 124 total to eclipse erstwhile joint leaders Sean Ramos and Laurea Duque’s 125 aggregate after slowing down with 64 in best-ball after a 61. Candinato, a pro from Eastridge where he last played in the local pro circuit many years ago, thus received the top purse of P100,000 while Sara took home a trophy plus merchandise at the close of the two-day event sponsored by the Municipality of Cavinti in conjunction with the province’s Sambalilo Festival celebrations. Ramos and Duque’s bid got stymied by a bogey on the par-3 No. 3 as they came up short by one despite a fiery windup of six birdies in the last seven holes on a pair of three-birdie feats from Nos. 12 and 16. Ramos took the P50,000 runner-up prize.

Nick Joaquin’s easy-to-read Rizal bio back in print

W

ITH school starting again at many colleges and universities this month, it’s time to think of how we can make the mandatory Rizal course easier to navigate and understand. Per Republic Act No. 1425 of 1956, the life and works of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal are to be taught in a subject at the college level as part of the general education lineup. This requirement has not been repealed by the Basic Education Act or K-12 law. Given that, the question is how to make the subject more palatable, and even interesting,

Nick Joaquin, who was conferred the rank and title of National Artist of the Philippines for Literature was an erudite reader and explainer of history and was best known for his short stories, novels, and Philippine history books.

HONG Kong Tourism Board brought together 18 diverse artists across Southeast Asia (S.E.A) to create art pieces inspired by perennial icons of Hong Kong. This initiative, “Arts in HK with S.E.A artists” is an extension of the year-long “Arts in Hong Kong” by generating awareness of the city’s always-on, diverse experience of arts and culture, and establishing Hong Kong as a center for international arts and cultural exchange. “Arts in HK with S.E.A artists” campaign features artistic talents from the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam. The collection of artwork spans across a spectrum of genres from painting to digital illustration, pottery, embroidery, sand art, and more. “As an international arts and culture hub, Hong Kong is excited to engage, nurture and develop the next generation of local artists across the region, while giving them a platform to showcase their talents to the world. By amplifying the potential of artists through this initiative, we hope to positively shape and empower artists within the local arts community in the region,” said Raymond Chan, Regional Director of Southeast Asia at Hong Kong Tourism Board. Art holds clues to life in the past and present. By looking at a work of art’s symbolism, we can learn, rewind time, and experience a culture that is different from our time. The creations by the 18 Southeast Asian artists explore different facets of old and new Hong Kong – some celebrate traditional crafts such as Mahjong carving and slipper

for Gen Z who see Rizal as an archaic figure lost in the mists of time? Heck, even I, a Gen X’er, found Rizal hard to reach even back in my day. He was a contemporary of the Victorians, after all – he was nine when Charles Dickens died, and he was born two years after Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote the Sherlock Holmes stories. So anything that makes the legend more approachable as a flesh-and-blood person is welcome. That is why the 2021 reissue of Nick Joaquin’s Rizal in Saga: A Life for Student Fans, first published for the 1996 Centennial, is timely and much appreciated. Add to that the fact that the original version was almost immediately out of print because it was produced for an event and given away as souvenirs. Joaquin was an eloquent and elegant writer, eminently readable and comprehensible. What makes this new edition by Milflores Publishing more interesting are the introduction and notes by historian Ambeth Ocampo, whose efforts have done much to popularize Philippine history. The notes add historical context and information not available to Joaquin, or that he chose not to include. The result is an expanded version with deeper nuance and meaning. There are 35 chapters in the book, one for each year of Rizal’s short but action-packed life – just to prove that youth is not an obstacle to great achievement. Four appendices, essays written also by Joaquin, provide sharp and penetrating insights into the literary merits of Rizal’s fiction and poetry. There are photos of the young Rizal, some rare, and for those alone, this book is a

must-have for every Filipino home. Nick Joaquin was an erudite reader and explainer of history and had the rare ability to connect disparate dots together to come up with the big picture. His exploration of the timeline of Rizal’ life, amply fleshed out with details of his subject’s daily doings and thoughts, creates a well-rounded narrative that will plump out the skeleton of knowledge we retain about Rizal. The first 23 chapters focus on Rizal’s youth, and these will probably help students relate more to him and see him as someone who was once like themselves, bright and curious and on the brink of their life’s great adventure. Here’s something a lot of folks probably don’t know about the national hero: he was extremely insecure about his lack of height (he was five-two) and compensated by building up his muscles through exercise (which is why the photos of him fencing in Spain with compatriots). He also spoke Tagalog at home and wrote in the language, even if most of his works were in Spanish; he nearly drowned in the Biñan River when his naughty nephew pushed him in and was saved only by someone grabbing him by the feet; and as a young boy at the Ateneo, his landlady taught him to play pangguingue and he did so well she regularly made him play in her place and collected his winnings! Aside from the tidbits about Rizal, what rounds out Joaquin’s account is the portrayal of Rizal’s character development, how his personality was marked by adverse events in his childhood, and how tough lessons motivated him to excel. Though he had a pessimistic streak, prompting classmates to call him ‘paniki’ (bat), his future would be one of optimistic striving for the good of many. But for all the adoring passages about Rizal in this book, such as this one -- “Rizal’s career illus-

The video of her making the dress went viral, garnering over 8.5 million views online. “The inspiration for my painting came from the game of Mahjong as it has deep attendties to Hong Kong’s culture. After attend oring the Arts in Hong Kong virtual event or ganized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, I was fascinated by Biu Kee Mahjong and Cheung’s hand-carved tiles. The art of

hand carving Mahjong tiles is so unique, I wanted to create a piece that represents both the memories that come with playing and how Mahjong brings families and even strangers together,” said Ciara Gan. “Collaborating with the Hong Kong Tourism Board is an exciting opportunity for me because I love Hong Kong culture and Hong Kong is one of my favorite cities in the world. Furthermore, to be selected for this campaign is truly a humbling experience as it validates all the hard work that I have put in to perfect my craft,” said Kent, an illustrator from Malaysia. Mela Gonzales, a crochet and embroidery artist from the Philippines shares, “It’s been a long time since I was last in Hong Kong, but I can’t wait to visit again. It is heart-warming to see so many Southeast Asian artists coming together, bringing expertise from different artistic expressions to celebrate Hong Kong. I hope one day we can all gather in Hong Kong to see its iconic skyline in person once again.”

trates the theory of challenge and response as the secret of progress. He started out timid and insecure; he ended up bold and confident. Rizal soared because his every response overshot the challenge. With each achievement, whether in science or letters or scholarship, he added one more cubit to his stature, until he could no longer decry himself as little” – ‘Rizal in Saga’ is not a hagiography. Joaquin tells it like it is. He contends, for instance, that Rizal, contrary to our popular belief, did not bring down the Spanish empire – “The usual bottom line on Rizal is: If with a bullet they cracked his brain, with his brain he cracked their empire. Which is quite false. Neither with his pen nor his death did Rizal shake the Spanish empire, though it was already shaky with decay. Its hour of truth was the Spanish-American War, which delivered the fatal push.” So how are we to think of Rizal’s life and legacy? You may read Joaquin’s takes about that in this book, which offers alternate and contextualized readings of Rizal’s works and life. Milflores Publishing head Atty. Andrea PasionFlores deserves kudos for bringing this work back into print. Not only does it connect us with Rizal, the man, and hero, but it also links us to our colonial past and gives us a richer sense of where we have been, so that we may understand where we want to go and do our part in creating a Philippines that is worthy and appreciative of Rizal’s sacrifice. *** You may reach the author on Facebook and Twitter: @DrJennyO Rizal in Saga: A Life for Student Fans By Nick Joaquin Introduction and notes by Ambeth R. All those years of pursuing her passions – in between successes and rejections – paid off. People took notice of her sensitivity as an actress and her palpable chemistry with heartthrob Donny Pangilinan. Like everyone else, I rely on my smartphone all the time – for scripts and shoot schedules and to fill in the breaks via social media to interact with my supporters online, listening to music and streaming videos. Many consider their smartphone as an ‘extension’ of themselves and therefore can’t do without it. I can’t do without my smartphone because it’s my way to connect with loved ones, especially since we’re still in a pandemic and therefore have a lot of limitations in terms of movement. What are your go-to apps? I often use Instagram and Twitter, along with other social media apps where my fans are active. These comments give me a sense of fulfillment and empower me to work harder. People easily relate to you because you’ve always kept your feet on the ground despite what you’ve achieved at such a young age. How do you maximize this power to reach out to more fans and touch their lives? By showing my appreciation to them like how grateful I am even if I don’t get to see the fans physically. Being on the receiving end of all this love and support has really been a humbling experience for me. When was the last time you needed to power through a challenging situation? How did you deal with it?

Social media can be challenging at times because of all the bashing and hate comments people deal with on these platforms. What I do is take all valid criticism in a constructive way, so I can grow and learn from them.

OD created animals, according to the Bible, just like humans. Animals are not the result of chance encounters or unanticipated natural processes. God allegedly created all animals, including creeping insects and land animals, according to Genesis 1:24–25. We even learn from the Bible that they contain the breath of life (Gen. 7:15). We humans are exceptional in relation to all of creation because we were made in God's image, but it does not imply God does not love or enjoy the other parts of creation as much as we do. Regarding potential support for the idea of animal rights, the Bible provides a confusing range of answers. In the Book of Genesis' genesis story, this is illustrated. On the one hand, Genesis 1:26–30 asserts that because they are fashioned in God's likeness, people are to rule over other animals. This has been employed by various Christian theologians throughout the history of the Church to support the notion that non-human animals exist solely to serve or be useful to people, which has tragically resulted in significant usage and abuse of animals at the hands of humanity.

Plant-based diet

But in recent years, Christian theologians

have argued that a more accurate interpretation of Genesis 1:26-28 and 1:29-30 shows that God originally foreordained a plant-based diet for all land-based nonhuman animals, not just humans: God said, "See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so. As a result, it becomes clear that whatever "dominion" entails, it must be consistent with the notion of not eating any animals. This implies that the word "dominion" should be taken to mean "watching after," "governing over," "being accountable for," or "leading." In fact, several English Bible

translations substitute these meanings for the more archaic word "dominion." (Wikipedia, Christianity and Animal Rights) God deemed the creation of animals "excellent" when they were first made (Gen. 1:25). When the creation story in Genesis 1 came to an end, God surveyed "everything he had made" and pronounced it "very good" (v. 31). When viewed as a whole, not just in terms of humanity, creation was "extremely excellent." Humans are the pinnacle of God's creative work, and as bearers of his image, we have a connection to the divine that no other part of creation does. However, we shouldn't let that fact overshadow our admiration for the rest of creation or lessen our duties to it.

Treat animals well

Overworking animals is prohibited under the Mosaic Law found in the Hebrew Scriptures, and it mandates that humans assist stray and lost animals. Many of the injunctions are expressly stated to benefit the creatures rather than the owners. There are many passages that present a positive view of animals and imply that humanity’s attitude towards them should be one of caring responsibility. Both friends' and enemies' animals must be helped, according to the Law, even though there is no compulsion to do so. Exodus 23:4–12, commands the Israelites to take care of any cattle and

How to help sad or depressed cats MOST indoor or owned cats are always active. They move a lot, and socialize a lot with humans. When your cat is suddenly quiet or stays in one place or is not her usual self, your cat may be sad and/or depressed. “Many caretakers fail to recognize the signs of a depressed and sad cat. It’s essential for you to know the various causes of sadness in cats and the best ways to make them happy,” says WebMD Editorial Contributors in the article “Why Is My Cat Sad? “ which was reviewed by veterinarian Vanessa Farner. “Cats are emotional and can get stressed or depressed. The most common signs of an unhappy cat are cowering, hissing, and fleeing. But sometimes your cat may not show obvious signs of stress. This is why as a pet owner you should have knowledge of how cats behave when they're depressed,” adds WebMD.

to keep both of you happy,” says WebMD. Here are other reasons your cat may become sad: 1. Loss of a loved one. Cats also grieve when a loved one dies. “Your cat may have developed a bond with your dog over time, for example. If your dog dies or leaves your home, you may notice the cat looking sad and depressed. This is a temporary behavior, and your cat will recover,” WebMD says. 2. Injury. Your cat will get sad if she can not do the things she used to enjoy doing after she got injured while walking or playing. 3. Illness. Your cat may be sick. “Some of the diseases and infections that can affect the mood of your cat include fatty liver disease, dental disease, upper respiratory disease, ringworm and cancer,” WebMD says.

Reasons a cat gets sad

It may not be easy to detect sadness in cats. Check for the following possible signs of depression: 1. Low energy levels. Cats usually sleep a lot. A depressed cat sleeps more. If there is a sudden change in the sleeping pattern, it means your cat could be sad. “Unusually low energy is a red flag for unhappy cat behavior, suggesting a mental or physical problem, “ WebMD says. 2. Grooming changes. Sad cats usually stop grooming, leaving themselves unkempt and dirty.

There are many reasons for a cat to get sad. One important part of a cat’s life is his relationship with his furparent or owner. Thus, a change in his relationship with you can make him sad. Examples of changes that can make your cat sad are: change in your schedule at home, change of place, when you are busy with another pet or a baby, or when a human moves out of the family home, among others “It is important to spend quality time with your cat Toys keep kittens and cats busy and helps them get rid of excess energy. The good thing about cats is that you don’t need expensive toys to make them happy. You can even make these toys.

Signs of sadness in a cat

God loves animals. Let the Lord be glad in his handiwork is the psalmist's declaration in Psalm 104:31, but it is followed by a lengthy description of God's connection with animals, including wild goats, rock badgers, forest beasts, juvenile lions, and animals of all sizes (see vv. 18-30). The same word translated as "happy" was used by the psalmist to describe his personal gladness in God in a few additional verses. He declared with emphasis, "I shall rejoice in the Lord" (Ps. 104:34). When we think about the delight we experience from raising our own children, it is easy to understand how God enjoys seeing animals. Even creatures that we have no creative connection with make for entertaining viewing. It makes sense that the one who made everything would love it given those circumstances. According to Proverbs 12:10, "A righteous man has regard for the life of his beast, but the mercy of the wicked is cruel." This significant verse implies a Biblical categorization of people into two distinct types: those who are "righteous" and "just" and are kind to their animals, and those who are "wicked" and are cruel to creatures under their care. Animals teach us about the justice of God. This lesson is provided through Israel's requirement of substitutionary atonement in the Bible. Scripture declares that defiance of God constitutes sin. In reaction to this rebellion, God's righteousness requires a punishment. In other words, God demands justice. Human sin requires an appropriate replacement or the guilty party to take responsibility. To assist His people to comprehend this truth, God instituted the Israelite sacrificial system. In order to fulfil the requirements

Stop animal sacrifice

The teachings and spread of Christianity put a stop to animal sacrifice because, in the eyes of Christians, Jesus—who is frequently represented in the New Testament as the final sacrificial lamb—died for all human sins. We are taught to treat animals with care and respect by the Bible and the Jewish-Christian tradition. Any person of faith and morality cannot defend the tremendous torture and suffering that are legally inflicted on billions of animals every year since it is a clear breach of the precepts of our religious beliefs.

No to animal cruelty

Christian principles are violated by modern animal agriculture. It decimates entire populations and species of wildlife, imprisons massive numbers of animals in appalling conditions in factory farms, destroys the environment, wastes limited resources, and jeopardizes human health. The suffering and destruction of animals brought on by modern society—clear violations of the spirit and text of the Biblical laws—could hardly have been predicted by the Bible's scribes. Fortunately, the concepts of the Bible may hold the answers to many of these issues. If followed, these teachings, which encourage respect for the planet and all of its inhabitants, might avert many environmental concerns and guarantee the survival of humanity.

3. Pain. One of the most underdiagnosed conditions in cats is pain, especially among seniors. Your cat needs help for this. Pain is one of the leading clinical signs of depression. 4. Changes in appetite. A change in eating behavior could be a sign of depression. Sad cats may suddenly stop eating their usual food. 5. Change in daily routine. A sudden change in behavior might be a sign the cat is experiencing stress. “Have they stopped using their litter box? Are they abandoning their usual sleeping spot? A sad cat may also lose interest in an activity that initially made them happy,” WebMD says. 6. Aggression. A sad cat suddenly becomes aggressive. Aggressive acts in cats include hissing, biting, chasing, and growling. If you notice such behavior, please bring your cat to the vet.

What to do

There are several ways you can help your cat to be happy: 1. Having playtime. Sad cats will be relieved of depression and aggression if you play with them. 2. Petting your cat. Cats love to interact with their humans. “A gentle hand on the back of the head and behind the jaw may stabilize a worried cat without restricting its movement,” says WebMD. 3. Using catnip. This helps to make cats happy. “Catnip is a plant in the mint family that contains a natural oil called nepetalactone that has a unique effect on cats. When cats rub on or chew catnip, it produces a mild natural high that is both harmless and temporary, but that is pleasurable to cats,” says WebMD. 4. Consulting an expert. “A board-certified animal behaviorist may be your best bet to cheer up your pet, as they have the knowledge and experience to treat depressed pets,” WebMD suggests. 5. When to call the vet. If your cat shows signs of chronic depression, stress, or illness, please bring your cat to the vet. “The vet may recommend medical intervention or just a change of routine,” WenMD says. Signs of a sick cat include: Loss of appetite Change in sleep patterns Crying or searching A need for extra attention A generally sad demeanor

It is good to keep cats in pairs or in threes or fours as companionship and play prevent and reduce stress. Yumi and Yana are sisters who were thrown in a trash bin with sister Yula. They were also rescued by Save ALL.

of His divine justice, He ordered that this mechanism regularly slaughter innocent animals (Lev. 16:1-34). The consequences of human wickedness would fall upon defenceless animals. This terrible spectacle was a sign of things to come, when the blameless Son of God would offer Himself as the real, lasting, substitutionary sacrifice for all of humanity's sin (Rom. 3:21-26; 2 Cor. 5:21; Heb. 10:1-18).

Caring for Cats

Unlike dogs, cats are low-maintenance and do not demand a lot when it comes to companionship, training, and exercising. “Cats tend to be more independent and can adjust well if you live a busy lifestyle. They can also be comfortable if you live in a small apartment or house,” says WebMD. How to prevent your cat from getting sad. WebMD shares some ways to prevent this: “Get your cat some toys. Toys will keep your cat busy and tired, thus getting rid of excess energy. Keep cats in pairs. This will help with companionship and making playmates, thus reducing or preventing stress. Let your cat "hunt." Simulating hunting behaviors keeps cats mentally stimulated and active. Walk your cat. Working out your cat will help get rid of their excess energy and stress. Ask for help from a professional animal trainer to help train your cat to walk on a leash. Spay or neuter them. Spaying or neutering your cat can eliminate stress caused by the need to find a mate.” Sad cats can spread their sorrow to others around them. Be aware of changes in your cat, and consult your vet if you notice anything different. Of course, always make them feel loved.
