‘Centaurus’ virus likely here Experts believe so as new COVID cases hit another high at 3,604
E
XPERTS believe the new BA.2.75—or Centaurus omicron subvariant—may already be present in the country, after projections of a possible peak of COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila were pushed back and cases continue to increase.
This developed as COVID-19 numbers hit another new daily high in five months, as the Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday reported 3,604 new cases in the country, the highest since February 12. Dr. Guido David of independent research group OCTA said the current surge wasn’t following a typical pattern where cases would decline continuously and attributed the rise in cases to other COVID subvariants that are circulating. David also believes the cases may surge until August, which coincides with the start of the school year, contrary to the previous projection that cases may peak
in July and decrease during August. The National Capital Region alone had 1,324 new COVID infections, said the health department. It also reported 14 new deaths from the coronavirus disease, bringing the total to 60,670. The number of active cases also breached 25,000, and at 25,743 is the highest since April 12. The country’s positivity rate or the ratio of people testing positive for COVID-19 from July 17 to 21 reached 14 percent. Meanwhile, the directive to subject Filipino nationals to daily COVID-19 tests CONTINUED ON 3A

Marcos vetoes OGCC bill over ‘excessive’ pay to lawyers PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has vetoed a bill seeking more powers for the Office of the Government Corporate Counsel (OGCC), Malacañang said Saturday. The President vetoed Senate Bill 2490 and its counterpart, House of Represen-
tatives Bill 9088 titled “An Act Strengthening the Office of the Government Corporate Counsel (OGCC) by Rationalizing and Further Professionalizing Its Organization, Upgrading Positions and Appropriating Funds Therefor.” In a news release, Press Secretary
Trixie Cruz-Angeles explained that one of the reasons cited by the President for the veto was “the excessive remuneration to be given to the OGCC lawyers.” “The other reasons for the veto were the possible violation of the One Trust CONTINUED ON 3A

Marawi people displaced by 2017 siege await restitution n By NASH MAULANA
C
OTABATO CITY—Residents displaced by the 2017 siege of Marawi City eagerly await the implementation of the Marawi Compensation Act (RA 11696) which was passed by Congress last April.
Lanao del Sur Representative Zia Alonto Adiong said “the passage of the law unequivocally acknowledges the people’s claim to land and property as it lends the support of the state in making sure that these claims are met with urgency.” Adiong said the law affirms a state policy in providing compensation or reparation to families and individuals displaced by the 2017 Marawi siege for damaged properties and possession” beyond recovery.
NCRPO chief tells his men to avoid using ‘wang-wang’ n By JOEL ZURBANO THE National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) has enjoined all district and station commanders to strictly adhere to the policy prohibiting the unauthorized use of sirens and blinkers, popularly known as “wang-wang,” which have become a symbol of abuse of power. NCRPO director Maj. Gen. Felipe Natividad also warned police personnel using these gadgets on their private cars or providing escorts to vehicles of VIPs in violation of the law. “Director Natividad urged all district directors and chiefs of police to observe the strict implementation of “anti wangwang” and blinkers in all their police interventions, checkpoints and patrol operations,” the NCRPO stated. Philippine National Police (PNP) officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. had ordered the crackdown against “wang-wangs” amid the reported proliferation of the device on major thoroughfares, especially along Epifanio de los Santos Ave. Police Highway Patrol Group director Brig. Gen. Francisco Marbil said at present, the law only prohibits the installation of sirens and blinkers on unauthorized vehicles, but not the sale of these devices. “I hope it will be part of the legislative agenda for this incoming Congress. We really need to regulate [not just the use but also the sale] of blinkers and sirens [so that] enforcement agencies can control these,” Marbil said in a radio interview.
He said the compensation law recognizes “the essence of providing reparation and compensation for persons and families whose rights were violated and whose economic, social, and cultural rights were unfulfilled as a result of armed conflicts.” Adiong said given the extent of rehabilitation needed for Marawi City and in the context of an ongoing political transition in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), the “in-
ter-agency cooperation and intergovernmental relations with the national government would be crucial to attaining success in the implementation of RA 11696.” Adiong, a former member of parliament of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA), noted that the Bangsamoro Organic Law (RA 11054) mandates the creation of intergovernmental relation mechanisms to facilitate better coordination between the BARMM regional government and the national government. While the Intergovernmental Relations Body (IGRB) co-chaired by former Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez and BARMM Education Minister Mohagher Iqbal has presented two progress reports to former President Rodrigo Duterte, these reports consisted mostly of administrative steps such as the turnover of properties and assets pre-
viously under the offices of the national government situated inside the BARMM Government Center. “The IGRB and other mechanisms related to intergovernmental relations will definitely have a crucial role in the implementation of RA 11696,” Adiong said, adding that the panel will also have crucial roles to play in the ongoing political transition in the BARMM.” The success of the political transition largely depends on Intergovernmental gains in terms of normalization and transitional justice in the Bangsamoro region. “Apart from the rehabilitation of Marawi City, other important measures that we hope to pass in the 19th Congress will require strong institutions that can inspire strong Intergovernmental relations based on united our efforts for peace and justice,” Adiong added.

Diarrhea outbreak downs 233, kills 3 in Davao City DAVAO CITY – An outbreak of diarrhea here has killed three patients in Toril district, the Davao City Health Office (CHO) on Friday reported. In a radio interview, CHO head, Dr. Ashley Lopez, said a 32-year-old male teacher and a 67-year-old woman succumbed to the disease, following the death of a 10-year-old boy on July 19. The teacher, a resident of Lingig, Surigao del Sur, died on Thursday due
to severe dehydration. Lopez said the victim was renting a bedspace in Barangay Lubogan, Toril, where he was teaching. The health official noted that the total number of cases of diarrhea climbed to 233 since July 15, with 21 barangays already infected —18 in Toril district and three outside the area. Lopez said a parallel investigation by their office and the Department
of Health regional office was ongoing, but there was no official result yet on the water and food sampling, as well as the rectal swab of the victims. “We cannot yet determine what exactly caused the outbreak,” he said. Pending the result of laboratory tests, the city government has suspended the operations of food stalls in Toril until further notice.

various forms of scams. “It is our utmost concern to immediately find out if Filipino userb data is among those compromised in the Binance data breach,” he said. Gustilo earlier wrote the National Privacy Commission, urging the NPC to inquire into the possibility that the data of Filipino Binance users may be included in the breach. In its letter-request to the Commission, he noted that Binance is operating in the Philippines without the necessary permits from the Philippine Government. He claimed Binance was operating freely in the Philippines without securing the necessary permits from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. Former Department of Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III warned the public about dealing with non-registered entities such as Binance.
BBM critics urged to observe ‘honeymoon’ tradition Cabatbat said that while Marcos was preparing to deliver his first State of the Nation Address, certain groups have launched smear and disinformation campaigns clearly aimed at Rodriguez. Rodriguez’s detractors have gone as far as flooding the social media with fake news of his alleged resignation as the overall alter ego of the President. Rodriguez denied that he had even offered to step down. Cabatbat urged Marcos to act swiftly in taking the role of a consensus builder, adding that it has become incumbent upon the chief executive to talk to key leaders and supporters of his administration.

THE rehabilitation of Marawi City should continue to gain commitment in terms of priority programs of the second Marcos administration, Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong said over the weekend Adiong said he expected a “renewed commitment” from the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for the continuity of the Marawi City rehabilitation from the creation of the Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM). He said more than the physical reconstruction in rehabilitation, Adiong said, he hoped that the Marcos administration “can unite with us in our mission to facilitate the long but necessary process of healing among our communities." Created by Administrative Order No, 03 on June 28, 2017, the TFBM is an interagency convergent body charged of “comprehensive and integrated rehabilitation program for Marawi City and other affected localities." Extremists captured the city in 2017, during which they ransacked banks and held hostage and executed an undetermined number of people. "The landscape in Lanao del Sur has changed in the last five years, and our new mandate from the people gives us the chance to change it for the better," Adiong said. Adiong said President Marcos’ first State of the Nation Address (SONA) was particularly important, as the Chief Executive was expected to set benchmarks for his first 100 days in office. With the people of the First District of Lanao del Sur, Adiong said he expected to hear that the rehabilitation of Marawi City would continue to be a priority under the current administration. He said that while presidential administrative orders “continue to subsist beyond the term of the President who issued them, an expression of commitment to continuing support for the TFBM during the first SONA can offer reassurance to the people of Lanao del Sur, especially Marawi City.” Nash Maulana

Magsasaka party-list Rep. POLICE have seized more than P4.25 million worth of metamphetamine hydrochloride, locally known as shabu, during a buy-bust operation Friday night in Barangay Rizal, Makati City. The raid also resulted in the arrest of five suspects identified as Jebert Baluarte, alias Kanor, 26; Leopoldo Montes, alias Leo, 53; Myrafe Montes, alias Fe, 42; Paul Graham Gonzalez, 28; and Reinsher Anne Jamero, 23. Operatives of the city’s Station Drug Enforcement Unit conducted the entrapment operation along Amarillo Street following surveillance conducted on the suspects’ illegal activity. Seized from the suspects were four plastic sachets containing shabu worth P4.25 million, a black Nike bag, a black pouch, and the cash and boodle money used in the police operation. The suspects, who are now detained at the Makati Police detention facility, will be charged with violation of Republic Act 9165 (Dangerous Drugs Law) while the pieces of evidence seized from them were turned over to Southern Police District Forensic Unit for chemical analysis. Southern Police District director Brig. Gen. Jimili Macaraeg commended Makati City police commander Col. Harold Depositar and his men for their accomplishment. “I congratulate the Makati City Police on their successful anti-drug operation, proof of your dedication to your sworn duty and desire to give our youth a future away from the destructive effects of illegal drugs,” said Macaraeg. LANDMARK DEAL.

Russia, Ukraine sign crucial grain deal to ease shortages I
STANBUL —Ukraine and Russia on Friday signed a landmark deal aimed at relieving a global food crisis caused by blocked Black Sea grain deliveries, ending months of negotiations and sending wheat prices tumbling to levels last seen before Moscow’s invasion.
The first major deal between the warring parties since the February invasion of Ukraine should help ease the “acute hunger” that the United Nations says faces an additional 47
million people because of the war. The hostility between Moscow and Kyiv spilled over into the signing ceremony -- delayed briefly by disputes about the display of flags around the table and Ukraine’s refusal to put its name on the same document as the Russians. The two sides eventually inked separate but identical agreements in the presence of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at Istanbul’s lavish Dolmabahce Palace. “Today, there is a beacon on the Black Sea -- a beacon of hope, a beacon of possibility, a beacon of relief,” Guterres said moments before the signing. Erdogan -- a key player in the negotiations who has good relations with both Moscow and Kyiv -- said the deal would “hopefully revive the path to peace”. But Ukraine entered the ceremony by bluntly warning that it would conduct “an immediate military response” should
Russia violate the agreement and attack its ships or stage an incursion around its ports. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later said the responsibility for enforcing the deal would fall to the UN, which along with Turkey is a co-guarantor of the agreement. - 20 million tonnes of wheat The agreement includes points on running Ukrainian grain ships along safe corridors that avoid known mines in the Black Sea. Huge quantities of wheat and other grain have been blocked in Ukrainian ports by Russian warships and landmines Kyiv has laid to avert a feared amphibious assault. Zelensky said that around 20 million tonnes of produce from last year’s harvest and the current crop would be exported under the agreement, estimating the value of Ukraine’s grain stocks at around $10 billion.
Following the deal, wheat prices tumbled to levels last seen before Russia’s invasion -- even as some analysts expressed scepticism about the accord. In Chicago, the price of wheat for delivery in September dropped 5.9 percent to $7.59 per bushel, equivalent to about 27 kilograms. Prices in Europe fell by a similar amount. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu told Kremlin state media after attending the signing ceremony that he expected the deal to start working “in the next few days”. He pointed out that Russia had managed to secure a separate pledge from Washington and Brussels to lift all restrictions on its own grain and other agricultural exports. The United States, Britain and the European Union hailed the Istanbul agreement while urging Moscow to abide by its rules. AFP
Trump, Pence hold dueling rallies in Arizona as GOP rivalry deepens WASHINGTON -- Donald Trump and his ex-wingman Mike Pence, who went from White House partners to bitter rivals, held dueling rallies Friday in Arizona, where an upcoming Republican primary election offers an early test of their potential 2024 showdown. The convergence of campaign events came a day after a congressional hearing on the US Capitol assault, in which a White House security official said members of Pence’s Secret Service detail feared they would die as rioters stormed the building. Trump, who like Pence is considering running for president in 2024, has savaged his former vice president for what he describes as a failure to block the certification of the 2020 election results and send the process back to the US states. Such a plan had been cooked up by Trump aides who supported his discredit-
ed theory that the election was stolen, but Pence ultimately decided that the action would be illegal. During the January 6, 2021 insurrection, Trump tweeted an attack on Pence, saying he “didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country.” Administration officials testified at Thursday’s hearing that the social media post poured fuel on the fire and turned rioters against the vice president. In extraordinary revelations at the hearing, a White House national security official who testified under anonymity said “members of the VP detail at this time were starting to fear for their own lives.” Trump’s gathering Friday in the central Arizona town of Prescott Valley was part of a series of “Save America” rallies he has held to boost his favored candidates ahead of Republican primary elections. Centaurus subvariant is more infectious compared to other subvariants. However, the DOH said that it’s too early to say if this is more dangerous, especially since hospitals haven’t been fully occupied yet. “They say this would be much (more) transmissible compared to the other subvariants of omicron. But the evidence where we can say this will produce more severe and critical cases is incomplete. This is being monitored by our international epidemiologists and experts,” DOH officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said. In an advisory, the PH consulate said the order is solely based on the volume of Filipinos who have caught the disease which, for the past two weeks, make up 24.5 percent of the community infection in Macau. “The Philippine Consulate General, at the outset of this directive, has issued its position taking the directive as purely a health issue. And yet there are those who remain focused on politicizing this. To put this issue to rest, the Philippine Consulate General has expressed its agreement to the findings shared by the Macau Health Bureau that necessitates the issuance of a directive to our nationals in Macau,” it said. The consulate noted that the same directive had been imposed on other nationals from neighboring countries in the past and it “worked” without anyone raising a discrimination issue of it. “Are we Filipinos better than our sisters and brothers from our neighbor countries just because we have a significant number in Macau?” the advisory read.
‘CENTAURUS’...in Macau is “purely a health issue” and should not be politicized, the Philippine Consulate General in the Chinese island state said Saturday. The Macau government earlier ordered any resident who holds a Philippine passport to take a daily nucleic test from July 22 to 24. About 30,000 Filipinos reside and work in Macau, based on the latest data from the consulate. David compared the country’s current surge to South Africa’s, saying: “There, more or less, they had a quick surge. One month going up, one month going down, then it ends. This was (fueled by) Omicron BA.5.” “But our current surge seems to be prolonged, or whatever you want to call it, wave (maybe),” he added. “It did not behave according to the patterns we were expecting.” Dr. Rontgene Solante of the DOH technical advisory group also noted the same observation. While authorities have not confirmed the presence of the subvariant in their latest genome sequencing report, Solante said he is not discounting the idea that Centaurus may also be present in the country. “Actually, it already peaked and was supposed to go down, which is characteristic of the previous increase in the cases before with the first variants of concern. It was unlikely to go up again,” Solante said. Initial evidence showed that the

Zia Alonto Adiong is the son of former Lanao Congressman and Governor Mamintal Adiong and Soraya Alonto, daughter of the late Senator Ahmad Domocao Alonto, a contemporary of Marcos Sr. in the glorious years of the Philippine Senate. Maguindanao Second District Rep. Mohamad Pendatun Paglas is the grandnephew of the late Senator Salipada Pendatun, whom Marcos Sr. had described as his comrade-in-arms, having both fought in World War II and “an exponent of peace efforts… since we first joined Congress in 1946.” Rep. Yasser Alonto Balindong of Lanao del Sur’s Second District is also Alonto’s grandson and is the son of 1971 Constitutional Convention Delegate lawyer Pangalian Balindong, a former Deputy Speaker of the House. Maguindanao’s Rep. Dimple Mastura is the wife of Vice Mayor Shameem Mastura, the grandnephew of 1971 ConCon Delegate lawyer Michael O. Mastura. In a 1981 gathering, Marcos Sr. was said to be looking for an elder of the Masturas.

“continuing and irremediable events of default” in relation to the master lease agreement between Clark International Airport Corp. and Global Gateway Development Corp. Udenna, in its reply, disputed the claims of the bank consortium. “Under the circumstances, there has been, in fact, no event of default or, at the very least, no irremediable event of default, under the master lease agree-
ment on the part of CGCC or GGDC,” the company said. “GGDC and CIAC are working on an amicable resolution that will not result in any violation under the master lease agreement. We trust that we have been able to clearly state our position on the matter,” it said.
MARCOS...Fund policy of the government, the grant of supervision and control over legal departments of government corporations, as well as the distortion of the relationship with the Secretary of Justice,” Cruz-Angeles added. This is the second time in less than a month the President has vetoed a proposed law under his young presidency. Marcos earlier vetoed a bill that sought to establish a special economic zone in San Miguel Corp.’s Bulacan Airport City, noting its “substantial fiscal risks.” He pointed out that the proposed law, which was seen to provide alternative areas for investment outside Metro Manila, infringes on other agencies’ mandates and narrows the tax base with the incentives to be given to businesses in the special economic zone. “I find many of its provisions overbearing, specifically the excessive grant of [remuneration], incentives, benefits and allowances and honoraria that violates the principles of equity and standardization,” Marcos said in his veto message. The OGCC, which is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Justice, is the “principal and statutory law office of government-owned and controlled corporations.”
Abe murder suspect to take mental exam TOKYO—The man accused of assassinating Japan’s former prime minister Shinzo Abe is set to undergo an examination of his mental condition around the time of the incident, local media reported Saturday. Abe was gunned down on the campaign trail on July 8 in the western city of Nara, two days before the country’s upper house elections. His accused killer Tetsuya Yamagami is in custody and reportedly targeted Abe because he believed the former leader was linked to the Unification Church. On Friday, the Nara District Court approved a request by the local public prosecutors office for a psychiatric examination of 41-year-old Yamagami, the Asahi Shimbun and other local media reported, citing unnamed investigative sources. The examination is expected to wrap up in late November, the reports said. Investigative questioning of the suspect will be halted during the mental examination. Prosecutors will determine whether Yamagami can bear criminal liability based on the examination before making a decision on whether to indict him, the reports said. AFP
Cuba sets same-sex marriage referendum HAVANA -- Cuba will hold a referendum on September 25 on whether to adopt a refreshed family law, which would include for the first time legalization of same-sex marriage and surrogate parenthood, the island nation’s parliament announced Friday. “The final decision will be left in the hands of the people,” but “we are convinced that in due time, the majority of the Cuban people will endorse this revolutionary, inclusive and democratic code,” said the National Assembly’s secretary. The new family law will replace legislation that has been in force for 47 years. LGBTQ activists had attempted to include same-sex marriage in the Cuban Constitution when it was revised in 2019, but it was ultimately withdrawn due to strong opposition from certain churches and conservative groups. If the referendum passes, Cuba will join seven other Latin American countries that allow same-sex marriage: Costa Rica, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Uruguay and most recently Chile. AFP
UK spy chief says Iran boss nixing nuke deal WASHINGTON -- Britain’s spy chief voiced doubt Thursday that a landmark 2015 nuclear accord with Iran can be revived, saying Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei remained opposed despite marathon diplomacy with the United States. “If we can get a deal it’s probably the best means still available to constrain the Iranian nuclear program. I’m not convinced we’re going to get there,” MI6 chief Richard Moore told the Aspen Security Forum. “I don’t think the supreme leader of Iran wants to cut a deal. The Iranians won’t want to end the talks either so they could run on for a bit,” Moore said in a live interview in the US state of Colorado, in what was billed as his first public speaking appearance abroad. President Joe Biden has backed reviving the 2015 agreement which was negotiated under former US leader Barack Obama and trashed three years later by Donald Trump. But indirect talks brokered by the European Union in Vienna have dragged on, in part over the US rejection of Iranian demands to reverse Trump’s blacklisting of the powerful Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist group. Hybrid rice company promotes food sufficiency
S
L AGRITECH Corp., the pioneer in local hybrid rice production, aims to address the country’s food security problem by championing solutions for a resilient agriculture sector.
“As a country that is heavy on rice consumption, I believe that our technology is capable of meeting our country’s growing demand for rice,” says Dr. Henry Lim Bon Liong, chief executive of SL Agritech. “My goal, not just for SL Agritech but also for the country, is to enable the utilization of hybrid rice technology that would boost our rice production while increasing the net income of our farmers,” he says. To help create a more rice-sufficient country, the company continues to invest in research and development of hybrid rice varieties to improve rice production. SL Agritech supports thousands of farming communities through several programs geared toward doubling or even tripling the farmers’ harvest to meet the growing demand for rice while also increasing their income. As the country’s biggest hybrid rice producer, SL Agritech launched the Masaganang Ani 300 program in 2020 to increase rice productivity. Through the program, farmers were able to produce 300 to 339 cavans of rice, equivalent to more than 15 metric tons of rice production using hybrid rice seeds. Prior to the adoption of hybrid rice technology in the country, Nueva Ecija, considered as the rice granary of the Philippines, can only produce 870,000 metric tons of rice annually with an average yield of 3.6 tons per hectare. With the use of hybrid rice seeds, their yield increased to an average of 4.81 tons per hectare which encourages other farmers to follow suit. To date, their annual palay production is more than 2 million tons with an average yield of 6.9 tons a hectare. Hybrid rice seeds are bred from two different parents, known to display “hybrid vigor” and are expected to outyield inbred rice varieties. In 2000, SL Agritech proudly discovered the high yielding SL-8H seed variety. Since then, other SL varieties were introduced with yields ranging from 7 to 15 tons per hectare even at the most

Michelle Lim-Gankee, executive vice oresident of SL Agritech says, “Our team is committed to pioneering research and development initiatives with the hope to continuously discover high-yielding rice varieties that would meet the demand of our countrymen while uplifting the lives of our farmers.” “With these varieties, we are one step ahead of battling the threat of food shortages because farmers can then produce rice crops with robust panicles and stems, which eventually translates to a higher yield,” she says. SL Agritech has more than 3,000 people in its research, production and administrative facilities in Makati, Laguna, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Tarlac
and Davao. The company is also heavily involved in milled rice production through its network of contract growers that exclusively grow Doña Maria Premium Quality Rice and Willy Farms Rice. Among their more popular packaged rice products are the Jasponica Rice—a variety that combines the aroma of Jasmine rice and the softness of Japanese rice. Another is Willy Farms Premium Dinorado – a more affordable variety and known as a “special all occasion rice” because of versatility. SL Agritech also offers a healthier alternative to white rice—a wide selection of brown rice like the Jasponica Brown Rice and the Miponica Brown Rice.
COMPANIES have carefully observed and implemented an inclusive workplace culture by being more open to job seekers from different backgrounds. They also noticed that job seekers started considering the work culture and environment on top of salary offers when they are looking for jobs. JobStreet’s Global Talent Survey shows that more than 50 percent of Filipino job seekers will refuse to work for employers that do not align with their beliefs, which include diversity and inclusion. Research also shows that having diverse talent in the workplace leads to higher levels of productivity and performance as well as improved employee retention rates. Inclusivity within the workplace is not something that is nurtured overnight, said JobStreet country manager Philip Gioca. It takes a whole organization—from leaders at the highest level to the junior team members to have a deeper understanding and commitment towards the brand values and culture and displaying authenticity and acceptance, he said. “It starts from the top. Whatever the top tolerates, it is tolerated by the entire group. And so, what the top behaves that’s exactly how the members of the team and the company would behave,” said Gioca said. The country’s leading job portal said a company’s policies and behaviors begin at the top level of management, and this helps establish corporate culture. The role of the higher management, it said, is more than just making decisions that affect the whole organization. They also set the expectations for the way each employee treats one another.
Tolerating situations that negatively impact the members of the team affects the performance and success of the company, it said. JobStreet recognized that as most companies are practicing hybrid or remote work setups, communication can be an issue because of language barriers and varying communication styles or preferences. Gioca advised employers to maintain good communication in the workplace as it is integral in making inclusivity more genuine. One way to address this, he says, is by utilizing a standard operating procedure. For instance, important announcements and updates are sent through emails, meetings are done virtually, quick task-related messages are sent to the team chat, and more. JobStreet also encourages companies to conduct catchups, regular virtual activities, and town hall meeting with the employees to enhance company culture. With the workplace becoming more diverse, JobStreetalso advises hirers to take employee differences into consideration when implementing inclusivity, as there can be activities or gestures that can be normal to one candidate but are offensive to another. Employers are encouraged to conduct sensitivity trainings, especially for those who actively hire candidates that are from another race, with different gender identities, have disabilities, working moms, among others. Gioca said adopting programs based on the needs of their employees also helps showcase the company’s sincerity in achieving inclusivity. One example is by assigning newly hired employees to peer mentors who can provide support for new members to adapt to the organization.

A
SIAN and Southeast Asian Games gold medallist Vanessa Sarno continued to show class and consistency as she lifted her way to three gold medals while closing in on her Olympic dream at the close of the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. It appeared so easy for the Bohol-born Sarno as she lifted 100kg in snatch and 130kg in the clean and jerk for a very conservative total of 230kg to claim the Junior women’s 71kg. title. Sarno, who holds the Philippine and Southeast Asian Games record in the category, had plenty to spare but settled down comfortably, fully aware that the three-gold haul was all wrapped up. She said she is reserving for the incoming international qualifying tournament for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Sarno had her personal bests in Snatch at 104 kg (2022, NR and MR), Clean & Jerk at 135kg (2022, NR and MR), and a total of 239 kg (2022, NR and MR). Sarno is looking to participate in the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France to follow the path of her idol Hidilyn Diaz, the 2022 Tokyo Olympic weightlifting gold medalist. In the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi last May, Sarno listed three new records in snatch (104kg.), clean and jerk (135kg.), and total (239kg.) to win the gold medal. The 5-foot-4 Sarno was crowned champion at the 2021 Asian Championships, also held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. She pocketed a silver medal in snatch (101kg.) but took the gold medal in clean and jerk (128kg.) and total (229kg.). MIGHTY PERFORMANCE Sarno’s three-gold performance capped a mightly performance by Team Philippines on the way to a total haul of 15 gold medals, on top of two silver and bronze medals. It was the best performance thus far by the country in the tournament that gathers the best young Asian lifters. Interestingly, Sarno’s victorious lift coincides with the

celebration of Bohol Day, her home province. Earlier, Zamboanga pride Rosegie Ramos, 18, and 15-yearold Rosalinda Faustino bagged three gold medals each junior women’s 49kg and women’s youth 49kg division. Angeline Colonia, a 15-year-old Zamboangena with an Olympian pedigree, kicked off the country’s campaign on a high note after striking two gold medals in record-breaking fashion in the youth women’s 40kg category on opening day. The nephew of Rio Olympian Nestor Colonia bagged the gold in the snatch with a lift of 62kgs, breaking the old Asian and World record of 61kgs set in November 2018. Colonia also took the silver in the clean and jerk with a 72-kg performance for a total of 134 kilograms which gave her the second gold medal. Sarno clinched two golds (overall and snatch) and one silver (clean and jerk) in the 71-kg division of the 2019 Asian Youth and Junior Championships in North Korea She also joined the 2020 IWF Online World Youth Championship hosted by Peru where she won three gold medals (snatch, clean and jerk, and overall) in the 71-kg division At the 2020 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, which was delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sarno clinched the gold medal in the -71kg category, and also won two small medals; gold for the clean and jerk and a silver for the snatch.

10 tips to improve your relationship with social media TECHNOLOGY, especially social media, is an innovative and helpful tool that makes life more convenient and enjoyable. However, it has become so entertaining and addicting that it became a challenge to close apps and switch off gadgets – eventually disconnecting us from ourselves and reality. To guide the public into healthier social media use, philosopher, writer, and poet Susanna Newsonen, the author of Notes on Self-Love, Happiness is Here, and Screw Finding Your Passion, has shared her observations. “Our relationship with technology has become increasingly heavy and complex, adding weight to our shoulders that wasn’t there before,” she noted. “Some days, it feels like these advancements in tech have surpassed us and our ability to handle them.” The Benilde Well-Being Center (BWC) of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, along with Newsonen, believes that establishing a better and healthier relationship with social media is a choice. From the sought-after life coach, positive psychology practitioner, and keynote speaker, here are some pointers on Psychology Today, the world’s largest mental health and behavioral science destination online: 1.Bedroom is a technology-free zone. You get to choose what you see on your feed. Make sure you produce a feed that motivates and informs you. 7. Stop feeling the pressure to post. Just because people are doing it doesn’t mean you have to. You can post anything or nothing. Simply do whatever you feel like doing. Do it for yourself and not for the likes. Most importantly, be real. Do not scroll mindlessly on your social media platforms Meditate. Stretch. Go for a jog. Get some fresh air. ENGLISH singer-songwriter Tom Grennan has released the euphoric new single “All These Nights.” With its arena-sized bounce of a chorus, Tom’s new song roars with skyscraping ambition and sees the chart-topping BRIT and Ivor Novello-nominated star setting his sights on an exhilarating new creative direction for 2022. Speaking about “All These Nights,” Tom says that the song is about feeling grateful for the good energy and good people in your life. “The people that bring you joy and bring you love. This is the start of the new chapter. My sound is evolving. I’m opening the door, and I’m announcing that: this is where it’s at now,” he adds. “All These Nights” follows Tom’s latest hit, “Remind Me.” A new live favorite that’s already captured the hearts and minds of thousands of fans at concerts and summer festivals, including one of the biggest crowds at the 2022 Isle Of Wight Festival mainstage and, following a sold-out US and Australian tour, at Tom’s homecoming show to 15,000 fans in Bedford Park. Grennan’s biggest UK outdoor headline gig to date. Outside of Tom’s packed touring schedule, he recently joined the England team for Soccer Aid 2022 where he was awarded Player of the Match for his sensational performance, electric speed, and impressive finish. Tom continues to tour through summer 2022 with dates across the UK, including Margate’s Dreamland, Boardmasters, Kendal Calling, and more. Following the release of his chart-topping UK Number One album Evering Road in 2021, Tom’s music continues to resonate all over the world. In South Korea alone Tom has become a superstar, with the BRIT-nominated “Little Bit of Love” (his first UK Top 10) streamed 30 million times and covered by a clutch of K-Pop talents, including Monsta X. And all this without his having set foot in the country. At home in the UK, his breakthrough has now been underlined by PPL’s Most Played Tracks Chart with two of Grennan’s platinum-selling hits, “Little Bit Of Love” (now streamed over 300 million times) and “By Your Side,” scoring in the Top Three most played songs of the year. Tom Grennan is currently in the studio working on new music for his anticipated third album.

UTHANASIA is described as the merciful, painless termination of a living being's existence in order to relieve their suffering. That is why it is coined “mercy killing” by some people. This occurs frequently due to a terminal illness or deteriorating health brought on by ageing. Some individuals confuse euthanasia with putting a pet to sleep while under anaesthesia by using phrases like "putting a pet down" or "putting a pet to sleep." We refer to it as "euthanasia" to avoid any misunderstanding.

Mercy killing or killing mercy? The goal of veterinary practitioners is to minimize suffering, even if that necessitates putting an animal to permanent sleep. Veterinarians and other animal lovers believe that it is best to gently euthanize your loving friend if they are obviously suffering, whether from a terminal illness, geriatric condition, or incurable sickness. This will prevent needless suffering that cannot be healed or lessened. However, it is totally normal to let your pet live out its days and die naturally if they appear content and are not in any obvious pain. Pet euthanasia has been carried out using a variety of techniques. International organizations recommend some, but certain nations consider others to be illegal. The majority of the time, barbiturates (pentobarbitone or pentobarbital sodium) are used to euthanize pets. Barbiturates produce a deep state of anaesthesia and unconsciousness before respiratory collapse. However, various techniques, like magnesium sulfate, potassium salts, carbon monoxide gas, and even captive bolt shoots, can be used on sedated animals. Strychnine use, electrocution, cyanide use, beheading, drowning, and the use of curariform medications (for example, succinylcholine) are some unacceptable ways that are still practised in some nations (particularly in third-world countries such as ours). (Antonio Ortega-Pacheco and Matilde Jimenez-Coello, Debate for and Against Euthanasia in the Control of Dog Population, 15 September 2011) The unethical ways of putting down an animal, as much as it is disdainful to say, are still quite rampant, especially in underdeveloped countries. A number of these procedures are cited in Administrative Orders 9 and 13, Series of 2010 and 2011 (Euthanasia of Animals) of the Department of Agriculture of the Philippines. It is evident of the low level of awareness of its people when it comes to accepting and understanding the truth about non-human animals as sentient beings. Others, though aware of this fact, condone these merciless ways for personal gain and convenience. Even coming to the point of justifying their reasoning by legalizing the horrid op-

erations of killing animals for euthanasia. When such ways are accepted by the state as legal, this is no less than an act of “killing (the concept of) mercy” in the minds and hearts of men. One of the sweetest presents we can give a suffering animal at the end of its life is the calm of a quiet room, a loving embrace from a caring person, and a gentle, painless slumber brought on by a skilled specialist. When an animal receives the right euthanasia medications by injection, it can pass out within three to five seconds. Compare that to how the gas chamber operates. Its operation will undoubtedly distress you if you have a sensitivity to animal pain. Creatures are put into a tiny, dark box that is occasionally filled with the odors of the animals that came before them, many of which may have urinated or defecated just before they passed away. Animals may start fighting if they are confined together in the chamber out of fear and desperation. They might be in the box for several minutes while screaming, clawing, and acting afraid. Before eventually going unconscious, they can

have trouble breathing or start convulsing. In the best-case scenario, an animal within a gas chamber takes minutes to lose consciousness. However, it can take much longer if the chamber is outdated or not well calibrated—a common problem for underfunded pounds and shelters— or if the animal is very young, very old, ill, injured, or under stress. In the worst scenarios, the animal's key organs start to shut down while it is still aware. For a procedure to be considered completely humane, the animal must not only experience any pain, but also no worry. Animals who are sick, injured, old, or young, who make up the majority of those who are put to death in pounds or shelters, can experience physical pain from gas chambers, but every animal that is pushed into one, experiences stress. The process of drowning provides the same effects (for pips and hatchlings). Gunshots, decapitation, and sharp blows to the head are all extremely violent processes that clearly present no mercy for animals. Making the choice to put your cherished pet or
farm animal to sleep can be extremely tough as they get closer to the end of their life, whether it's due to the end of their natural lifespan or a fatal illness. A lot of pet owners and farmers are afraid to ask questions about the decision, the procedure, or what happens to their pet after euthanasia. It's painful to consider that your closest friend's companionship is coming to an end, but by becoming more knowledgeable about the euthanasia procedure and preparing yourself for the inevitable, you may make the process of putting your pet or farm animal to sleep easier. Learn about the euthanasia procedures accepted and allowed by our government and our trusted veterinarian in advance if your beloved pet's time is running out. And discern well which ones are truly humane. About the Author: Mariana Burgos is a freelance artist. She is a solo parent for 14 years now because she is wife to a desaparacido. Lazatin orders spaying and neutering of stray animals near 53 Angeles schools The Angeles City Veterinary Office headed by Dr. Christian Arcilla spayed and neutered stray dogs and cats in the vicinity of 53 public schools as per order of Mayor Carmelo Lazatin Jr. to control animal population in the city. This is the recovery station for fixed pets or strays. Why spay or neuter (fix) cats? A cat gives birth to around 12,000 kittens during its lifetime. Spaying one cat thus means saving 12,000 kittens from ending up as stray cats, homeless and hungry and even hurt by cruel people on the streets. Executive Assistant IV Reina Mauel and adviser IC Calaguas are advocates of trap-neuter-return (TNR). The more dogs are spayed and neutered, the less birth of puppies, most of whom will end up as stray dogs who are hurt by heartless humans, or who scavenge for food from trash bins. Eating food from trash is one of the ways a dog develops rabies. A human can get infected with rabies when bitten by a dog with rabies. (Photo by Angeles City Information Office )

ANGELES CITY — Putting premium on the welfare of animals, Mayor Carmelo Lazatin, Jr. has ordered the trap-neuter-release (TNR) and anti-rabies vaccination of stray dogs and cats in the premises of 53 public schools here. This is Mayor Lazatin's assistance to public schools’ administrations on the rapid population growth of stray animals living in the vicinity of schools, and at the same time, ensure the safety of children once classes start. “We understand the concerns of our schools in taking good care of stray pets practically living in the school,” Lazatin, a known animal advocate, said. Lazatin said that with the TNR program he launched in 2020, the city has seen an effective way of helping control animal population, specifically the “unwanted animal population.” Lazatin will deploy the officers of the City Veterinary Office led by Dr. Christian Arcilla to the 53 public schools via agreed schedules. The TNR program is being supervised by two of the city's known animal lovers, Chief Adviser IC Calaguas and Executive Assistant IV Reina Manuel. Calaguas and Manuel are both advocates of the TNR and are giving shelter to stray dogs and cats. Calaguas has implemented TNR in the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency National Headquarters in 2019 and Clark International Airport Corporation in 2021. Arcilla said the TNR is also a way to stop the increasing cases of rabies. During the launching of the free spaying and neutering in August 2020, 671 dogs and cats were fixed, while 578 animals benefitted from the program in 2021. More than 1,000 pets have already been spayed and neutered. The city government is also conducting an ongoing house-to-house vaccination of anti-rabies to pets in the 33 barangays.
