RESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. took his oath of office Thursday at the National Museum of Fine Arts as the country’s 17th President, vowing to repair a divided house and to take the country far under his watch with policies that would benefit every Filipino people.

VOL. XXXVI • NO. 135 • 3 SECTIONS 12 PAGES • P18 FRIDAY, JULY 1, 2022 • www.manilastandard.net • mst.daydesk@gmail.com

I fully understand the gravity of the responsibility you put on my shoulders. I do not take it lightly but I am ready for the task. I will get it done.

In his 30-minute inaugural speech, considered one of the shortest by a Philippine President, Marcos thanked the public for delivering what he called “the biggest electoral mandate in the history of Philippine democracy.” "We are here to repair a house divided, to make it whole, and to stand strong again in the Bayanihan way, expressive of our nature as Filipinos. We shall seek not to scorn dialogue, listen respectfully to contrary views, and be open to suggestions coming from hard-thinking and unsparing judgment, but always from us Filipinos," he said. The President said solutions from outside have only divided the country. “They were always at our expense. Never forget we are Filipinos. One nation. One Republic. Indivisible,” he said. “You will not be disappointed, so do not be afraid." Next page

LOOKING BACK, MOVING FORWARD:

Toward a more inclusive Marcos gov’t By Prof. Edmund S. Tayao LOOKING back moving forward is the message of the inaugural speech. We should look back, not to change history, but to learn from what has been done and what needs more to be done moving forward. The way forward is quite clear, to be inclusive as the President said: “Ang pangarap ninyo ay ang pangarap ko,” emphasizing that his aspirations are consistent with the aspirations of the people, and this is because he knows what the people want and need as he has been intently listening and will be listening to the people, that he shares the same dreams for the whole country. To be able to do this however, we have to reflect on our strengths as a country. And there are in fact strengths. We must have been just bogged down by forgetting what we have always had as a country and people. This to my mind encapsulates the inaugural message of the 17th President of the Republic, Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. The whole time, he was listening as he said: “I offended none of my rivals (and)

ANALYSIS instead listened to what they were saying.” The idea is to “focus on hard work” as he also listened to everyone’s call for unity. The point in all these is that there is no reason to remain divided and that the order of the day is to work together. He knows what has been causing division,

the big letdown for the country for ages, but that is the past, he says, adding that he is “not here to talk about but to tell you about our future.” That sets the tone of his vision: “A future of sufficiency”—something that is not impossible to his mind as he refers to the Philippines as a “land of bounty.” There were gains before and opportunities lost.

Reference to his father’s accomplishments werementioned, more to emphasize that the objective of self-sufficiency is not impossible. What is important is to build on the gains, continue the good initiatives already undertaken and being undertaken. He wasn’t after credit, he said, as what is important is to get things done, and that there is no excuse for failure. There is nothing that’s impossible given all that has already been accomplished before. We just need to learn from the past and not be bogged down by partisanship, our rather archaic idea of politics. This is the reason why the President believes the way forward is for the government “to put more means and choices in your hands. I trust the Filipino people.” The President got it right: the role of the government is to get things done without requiring more from the people. Instead of deciding for the people, the government should be able to provide what the people need to accomplish what needs to be accomplished. Empower them and the government will be able to do more. At the end of the day, we can only rely on ourselves; “Solutions from outside (only) divided us,” says the 17th Chief Executive. The firm strategy of drawing from our strength is therefore set. This then serves as the anchor of priority issues.

FORMER President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday appealed to the Filipino people to support the new administration under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who was sworn into office yesterday. Duterte made the call before leaving Malacanang for the last time as Chief Executive, following his stunning victory in the 2016 national elections. The tough-talking former mayor of Davao did not attend the inauguration of Marcos at the National Museum in Manila but expressed his willingness to offer advice to his successor. “Let us give all our support to the new administration. Let us help them. Let us help Marcos,” he said in a video taken by former Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar.

Duterte, whose term ended at noon Thursday, also praised his Cabinet as “one of the best.” "I am a student of government. I have been in the government for so long. I assembled one of the best Cabinets ever," he said. "Totoong-totoo 'yan. Piling pili ko [That is the truth. I chose them carefully]," Duterte added. Duterte was later seen shopping and having lunch at a mall in Makati City after leaving the Palace, then boarded a commercial flight hours later to his hometown of Davao City, where he grew his profile as mayor for over two decades. Duterte was accompanied by members of the Presidential Security Group, and was expected to show up at a homecoming concert held in his honor at the NCCC VP grounds in Davao in the evening. They cheered when the Supreme Court chief asked the President to state his name—Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr.—and again when he repeated the part of the oath that said “as President of the Republic of the Philippines.” The supporters then cheered for a third time at the end of the oath, drawing a big grin from the new First Lady, lawyer Liza Araneta-Marcos, and her sons Ferdinand “Sandro” Alexander III—who was elected congressman of Ilocos Norte— Joseph Simon, and William Vincent. Mrs. Marcos was later seen wiping away tears beside her husband and was caught on video playfully sticking a tongue out to the crowd who teased her Next page about it.

Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday expressed confidence that Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio, whom he has appointed as Education Secretary, will undertake reforms in the country’s education system to prepare Filipino students for a brighter future. "Once we had an education system that prepared coming generations for more and better jobs. There is hope for a comeback. Vice President and soon-tobe Secretary of Education Sara DuterteCarpio will fit that mission to achieve," Marcos said during his inaugural speech at the National Museum of Fine Arts. Duterte-Carpio attended the inauguration of her election running mate, wearing a pleated cream terno adorned with flowers created by Cary Santiago. “I've listened to you and this is what I have heard. We all want peace in our land. You and your children want a chance at a better hope in a safer and more prosperous country," Marcos said. “I am here not to talk about the past, I am here to tell you about our future. A future of sufficiency, even plenty of readily available ways and means to get done what needs doing. By you, by me,” he said after he was sworn in as the country’s new leader. “We do not look back, but ahead. Up the road that we must take to a place better than the one we lost in the pandemic. Gains made and lost, opportunities missed, well laid plans superseded by the pandemic. Indeed, ours was the fastest growing economy in ASEAN by ways now outdated. We shall be again, by a radical change in the way the world must now work to recover what we have lost in that fire and move on from there,” he added. He also vowed to fix the government’s shortcomings in its pandemic response, saying there will be “no more secrets” in public health. The new President cited his own bout with COVID-19, saying he was among the first in the country who got infected with the coronavirus. “It was not a walk in the park,” he said. He said his administration will fix the shortcomings “out in the open.” He also vowed that the Philippines will not be “caught unprepared, underequipped, and understaffed to fight the next pandemic.” “To start with, we never got over the pandemic of poor, if any, free public health. The last major upgrade of our public health system exemplified by the resources poured into PGH predates the current shambles by three generations,” the new President said, referring to the Philippine General Hospital. Marcos mentioned how medical workers, including workers, seek opportunities abroad because the Philippines “cannot

Agriculture appears to be the centerpiece, but it was emphasized that there were defects in the ways it was approached, that it requires alternative strategies. So much also depends on education. pay them for the same risks and workload that we have back here.” The President, who has appointed himself Agriculture secretary, said he would improve food sufficiency, infrastructure, waste management and energy supply and give full support for millions of overseas Filipino workers. “I fully understand the gravity of the responsibility you put on my shoulders. I do not take it lightly but I am ready for the task,” he said. “I will get it done.” “Our nurses are the best in the world, they have acquitted themselves with the highest distinction abroad, having suffered even the highest casualties with the same exemplary dedication. At home, they just got by,” Marcos said. “They are out there because we cannot pay them for the same risks and workload that we have back here,” he added. "All that is within reach of a hardworking, warm, and giving race. Your dreams are mine. Pangarap ninyo ay pangarap ko," the new President declared. He said the administration is currently drawing a “comprehensive, all-inclusive plan for economic transformation.” "We will build back better by doing things in the light of the experiences that we have had, both good and bad. It doesn't matter. No looking back in anger or nostalgia," he said. Marcos, who ran under the platform of national unity and reconciliation, acknowledged the enormity of the tasks before him as successor of President Rodrigo Duterte, who formally bowed out Thursday to return to being citizen Digong. “You people have spoken... You rejected the politics of division” and yearned for national unity," Marcos said in his inaugural speech. “You picked me to be your servant... I am ready for the task,” he said. "We've been through times of bitter division but united we came through to this when we shall begin again. But better," Marcos said. In his speech, Marcos also warned of expanded conflict should "great powers" take the "wrong lessons" from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

"We face prospects from the war abroad of which we are totally blameless. We seek friendship with all, but countries like ours will bear the brunt of it. And if the great powers draw the wrong lessons from the ongoing tragedy in Ukraine, the same dark prospect of conflict will spread to our part of the world," Marcos said. During the campaign period, Marcos said it is not necessary to take a stand on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. However, later in the campaign, Marcos called on Russia to respect Ukraine's freedom amid the ongoing conflict. At a UN General Assembly, the Philippines voted to condemn Russia's attack against Ukraine. Marcos vowed to give priority to programs and measures to attain food selfsufficiency, a promise of every administration that none but one delivered. He did not elaborate. Marcos also assured the public that infrastructure projects would be finished on schedule during his administration. “We will continue to build, I will complete on schedule the projects that have been started. I am not interested in taking credit. I want to build on the success that’s already happening. We will be presenting the public with a comprehensive infrastructure plan, six years could be just about enough time,” Marcos said. Marcos lauded even his father, the late president Ferdinand Marcos Sr., and his predecessor, President Rodrigo Duterte, for building “more and better roads” than the administrations before them. “My father built more and better roads. Produced more rice than all administrations before him. President Rodrigo Roa Duterte built more and better than all the administrations succeeding my father’s,” Marcos said. Addressing the foreign dignitaries in attendance, he highlighted the importance of strengthening and cultivating relationships with the other states, saying the transformation of the world economy and post-pandemic recovery depend on its partnership with other countries.

employment. This is fundamental as it is also the key if we are to expand opportunities for Filipinos not only abroad but even here in our country, and not be limited to menial jobs. I can only say, there is renewed hope with the message of the President. “Never forget,” the President says, “we are Filipinos, one nation, one Republic indivisible.” There is no reason to be afraid as “you will not be disappointed.” Critics might say he did not provide details. These, he says, will be laid down in the State of the Nation Address, which is but right and expected. The point made

may be repetitive as he said repeatedly “Pagkakaisa, pagkakaisa, pagkakaisa.” If critics are not swayed, then it only emphasizes the point more. Behind the Marcos family, some of the 2,000 guests and organizers fanned themselves furiously to ease the midday heat, as the instrumental to the song “Pilipinas Kong Mahal” played and the new President, wearing a native Barong Tagalog designed by Pepito Albert, prepared to read his inaugural speech. Also on stage were former First Lady Imelda Marcos – now 92 years old -- and her daughters Senator Imee Marcos and Irene Marcos-Araneta, likewise wearing exquisitely-tailored “terno” gowns. Selected health workers, farmers, firemen, law enforcement personnel, and laborers joined the military and civic parade, after which outgoing Senate President Vicente Sotto III read out the proclamation of Marcos’s electoral victory. This paved the way for the oath-taking of the incoming Chief Executive. Marcos put his hand on the Bible held by his wife Liza and took his oath before Chief Justice Gesmundo. Before his inaugural speech, the new President greeted and recognized the presence of foreign delegates and Philippine government officials— including Vice President Sara DuterteCarpio and the three former Presidents, Joseph Estrada, Fidel V. Ramos, and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. President Rodrigo Duterte did not attend the ceremony, opting to fly to his hometown of Davao City. Also present during the program were former and newly elected senators, including Vicente Sotto III, Gringo Honasan, Migz Zubiri, Jinggoy Estrada, and Ramon Revilla Jr., some Cabinet members of the new administration, outgoing House speaker Lord Allan Velasco, and presumptive Speaker Martin Romualdez. At least 15,000 police and security personnel were deployed across the capital for the inauguration. Several groups observed supporters and protesters alike who held their activities at freedom parks such as Liwasang Bonifacio, Plaza Miranda, Plaza Dilao, and Plaza Moriones, the Manila Police District said. Militant groups at Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, Manila rejected the celebration of the Marcos family, claiming the dark past of martial law haunts their return to power. Originally, progressive groups were supposed to hold a rally in Liwasang Bonifacio, but Marcos supporters were already at the venue. The inauguration was also met with protests against historical revisionism and high prices. After the inauguration, Marcos led the mass oath-taking of his Cabinet members at Malacañang.

inauguration last June 19, coinciding with the birth anniversary of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal and Father’s Day, in her hometown of Davao City. This was a departure from tradition, as the President and Vice President are usually sworn into office at noon on June 30 according to the Constitution. Marcos stressed there should be an improvement in the educational materials of students in the country to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills for employment. "What we teach in our schools, the materials used must be rethought. I am not talking about history. I am talking about the basics, the sciences. Sharpening theoretical aptitude and imparting vocational skills," he said. "Our teachers from elementary are heroes fighting ignorance with poor paper weapons. We are condemning the future of our race to menial occupations abroad, then they are exploited by traffickers," the President added. Marcos also expressed optimism that the welfare and interest of the overseas Filipino workers will be properly attended to under the leadership of former Labor Undersecretary Susan “Toots” Ople, whom he designated as the first-ever secretary of the Department of Migrant Workers. Marcos also vowed to give overseas Filipino workers all the advantages under his administration "for them to survive and to thrive." "Our nurses are the best in the world. They equated themselves with the highest distinction abroad, having suffered even the highest casualties... They are out there because we cannot pay them for the same risk and workload that we have back here," he said. "There will be changes starting tomorrow. I am confident because I have an Ople in my Cabinet," he added. Ople, an advocate of overseas Filipino workers (OFW), confirmed last month that she accepted the post as the head of the newly created Migrant Workers department, which will take over from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration. “I suppose this is the first act of actual work that we will be doing for this administration. So, let’s get the official part done so that we can get over the job,” Marcos said before administering the oath to the 23 Cabinet members he had named to serve under him, including DuterteCarpio who will head the Department of Education. Legislators led by Romualdez, the President’s maternal cousin, on Thursday said the new Chief Executive will be “a great President.” “He made history by being the first majority President in modern times. I am sure he has his eyes on other extraordinary feats by having a legacy Filipinos will be proud of for many years and by being a great President,” Romualdez said. "President Marcos will play a pivotal role in uniting the nation, which is key to moving the country to greater heights. We offer him our prayers--that the Lord Almighty guides him in steering the nation to unity and progress,” he added. Reps. Bernadette Herrera Dy of Bagong Henerasyon, Patrick Michael Vargas of Quezon City, and other congressmen likewise extended their congratulations to President Marcos on his inauguration. Former legislator Terry Ridon, Infrawatch PH convenor and former chairman of the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor, called on President Marcos to prioritize social programs in his first 100 days in office. Senators committed to rally behind the President to achieve his aspirations for the Filipino people. Senator Christopher Go said he looks forward to working hard with his fellow legislators and helping realize the aspirations of the Marcos administration for the people. Senator Juan Edgardo Angara said: “Together with the entire nation, we pray for the success of the Marcos administration.” Returning Senator Francis Escudero urged Filipinos to support the new administration as it charts the country’s future amid the many challenges facing the nation. However, the Philippines’ largest business group said the President’s inaugural speech failed to address the needs of the business community. The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) said the President’s speech seemed to lack specific plans on how to deliver more investments into the country. “The business sector wants specifics. While the President touched on agriculture and other points of interest, he did not mention anything that will help improve the business climate. His speech was too feel-good,” said George Barcelon, PCCI president. (See full story online at manilastandard.net)

Under the newest batch of the MLTP, a total of 14 female aspirants, alongside 23 male trainees, have been undergoing a series of lectures as well as rigorous physical training and endurance conditioning programs since last May.

SHAPING THE FUTURE OF ENERGY WORKFORCE

Meralco reopens doors for more female linecrew

FOR more than a century, the dangerous job of climbing electric poles and handling high voltage facilities of the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has since been assigned to male employees. The power distributor, which belongs to a traditionally male-denominated industry, relaunched its training and hiring program for aspiring female linecrew as part of its commitment to advance gender diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Called the Meralco Linecrew Training Program (MLTP), the initiative aims to develop a pool of skilled female line workers who are envisioned to eventually be part of the Meralco workforce. Since May, 14 women who are part of the newest batch of MLTP trainees have been undergoing a series of lectures, rigorous physical training and endurance conditioning programs in a bid to build and hone their skills that will allow them to properly use manually operated tools and safely climb Meralco utility poles. These aspiring trainees, alongside 23 male aspirants, will subsequently be assessed by Meralco for possible hiring and deployment after the five-month training. For 32-year-old Suzette Castro, a former cashier at a gasoline station in Dubai who came back to explore opportunities in the Philippines, the MLTP was something that she is proud to be part of. Narrating her experience, Castro said: “I cried hard on my first time to climb an electric pole because who would have thought that I can do that? The experience was really something lifechanging for me,” she said in Filipino.

Meralco pioneered the training program in 2013 and currently has nine female linecrew who are helping in delivering reliable electricity service to its customers.

The aspiring female trainees undergo the same training program as with their male counterparts.

MLTP’s training program include a series of lectures to allow them to properly use manually operated tools and safety equipment.

Part of their training involves undergoing rigorous physical training and endurance conditioning programs to hone their skills and allow them to safely climb Meralco utility poles.

Castro returned to the Philippines last year at the height of the pandemic and it had been a struggle for her to find another job overseas. Luckily, she came across Meralco Careers’ Facebook post looking for aspiring linecrew, an opportunity that she immediately grabbed. Asked how her family reacted to her decision to join the MLTP, Castro said: “They were very happy, but they always remind me to be careful because the job that is not usually for women. For me, it was also really challenging.” “If I am lucky enough to pass the training and be absorbed for employment, I would like to be an inspiration to other women that here in Meralco, you can be successful as long as you are determined and you follow the rules and safety procedures,” she added. “I will work hard to become a linewoman. I am very proud that despite the job being a job for men, it can still be done by women.” Another aspiring linewoman, 31-year-old Janette Dulero, worked almost five years as a call center agent before she joined the MLTP. “It felt different at first because I had a sedentary lifestyle in my previous job. But now under MLTP, my body has become more active, and I feel much stronger. I am very happy with this opportunity,” she shared. Dulero said that she would pursue working as a linewoman with hopes to inspire more women to take leaps, adding: “They should try it because if they don’t do anything, they won’t be able to enjoy benefits that the Meralco linecrew enjoy.” “When you become a linewoman, you will make men proud because this will make them realize that this job was not created only for men,” she said.

MLTP Program Manager Roman Leandro Manlapaz explained that the female aspirants undergo a rigorous eight-hour training daily, similar to the male trainees. “The first batch of our female linecrew proved that women can also perform jobs that were initially identified to be performed by men. With proper training, assessment and on the job experience, our female linecrew will be competent and confident to perform lineworks,” he said in Filipino. Meralco is one of the power distributors in Southeast Asia to launch a comprehensive technical program for linecrew that aims to offer these jobs even to women. It pioneered the training program in 2013 and currently has nine female linecrew in its workforce. The relaunch of the MLTP this year now forms as an important part of the company’s bigger Diversity and Inclusion Program called #MBrace, through which it targets to increase women representation in the workforce to 40% by 2030.

Suzette Castro (left), and Janette Dulero (right) both grabbed the opportunity to join the MLTP and want to become part of the Meralco workforce.

“#MBrace, from how it literally sounds, aims to help the company embrace and promote a gender-balanced workplace. The initiative is not limited to just improving women representation in the company, but also empowering women and giving them an avenue where they are free to discover their fullest potential,” Meralco First Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer Raymond B. Ravelo had said. #MBrace’s goals are aligned with SDG 5: Gender Equality and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. The program likewise fortifies Meralco’s commitment to the UN Global Compact’s Principle 6: Elimination of Discrimination in Employment, and supports the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles as well as the advocacies of the Philippine Business Coalition for Women Empowerment. To further cement its commitment to advancing workforce diversity and nurturing an inclusive and safe workplace for its employees, Meralco recently established a Diversity and Inclusion policy. Through this new policy, Meralco pledges to ensure equal employment opportunities for all and to respect all individual and value differences across gender, age, ethnicity, physical appearance, health, family status, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic background. The company through its corporate social responsibility arm One Meralco Foundation, also partnered with Don Bosco College-Canlubang in January this year for a scholarship program that will benefit 15 aspiring female electrical technicians. The program will cover the tuition fees and allowances of the students who will undergo the Technical Vocational Education Training Program for the dual NC II Program on Electrical Installation and Maintenance and Mechatronics beginning August. The program will also include a four-month on-the-job training for selected students, who will be given the opportunity to join Meralco’s workforce afterwards.

Doctors: Don’t be complacent against dengue

PROTESTS.

Militant groups held a protest rally at the Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, Manila before the start of the inauguration of Presidentelect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday. The Philippine National Police earlier urged rallyists to hold protests at “proper” venues like freedom parks. Norman Cruz

By Willie Casas THE Pediatric Infectious Disease Society of the Philippines (PIDSP) on Thursday has warned the public against complacency versus dengue, amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “I think we need to encourage health-seeking behavior,” said PIDSP president Dr. Fatima Gimenez in an online conference conducted by the Philippine Pediatric Society (PPS). “I think doon tayo nagkukulang (that is our weakness), and hindi dapat binabahala nasa pandemya tayo (we should not be complacent because we are in the middle of pandemic),” Gimenez said. “Your dengue signs and symptoms can be very non-specific and minsan ang COVID din (sometimes COVID symptoms also).” “Let’s talk about the possibility of this being confused with COVID, kasi (because it is) very non-specific ang signs and symptoms ng dengue,” she said. Gimenez also urged the public to keep their surroundings clean and to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. The Department of Health (DOH) said symptoms of dengue include the sudden onset of fever for two to seven days, headache, body weakness, joint and muscle pains, pain behind the eyes, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and skin rashes. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) said the most common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough, tiredness, and loss of taste or smell. Sore throat, headache, aches and pains, diarrhea, rash on the skin, and red or irritated eyes are among the less common symptoms of COVID-19. Gimenez said the public should be vigilant and aware of these symptoms. “The most important thing is that you are vigilant, even if you are at home, you need to be aware that it may not be a simple fever, it needs to be monitored. It must start with us, you don’t have to be a doctor,” she said.

WHO: Vigilance vs. monkeypox

T

HE World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday appealed for vigilance to ensure monkeypox does not spread among more vulnerable groups, such as children.

Fighting the virus requires “intense” efforts, said the WHO, calling for broad data collection and sharing on how well vaccines work against the virus. Experts have detected a surge of monkeypox cases since early May outside of the West and Central African countries where the disease has long been endemic. Most of the new cases have been in western Europe. “I am concerned about sustained transmission because it would suggest that the virus is establishing itself and

it could move into high-risk groups including children, the immunocompromised and pregnant women,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters. “We are starting to see this, with several children already infected.” There are two cases aged under 18 in Britain. WHO chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan called for “very careful studies of the vaccine in different population groups... so that we get data that’s

Smuggled agri products from China seized By Joel E. Zurbano BUREAU of Customs agents assigned at the Manila North Harbor seized another shipment of smuggled agricultural products from China. This time, operatives of the Manila International Container Port-Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (MICP-CIIS) intercepted three 40foot container vans of white onions worth P6 million consigned to Silverpop Dry Goods Trading. Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero described the latest operation as a fresh wave of anti-smuggling efforts aimed to prove his agency’s commitment to protecting the country’s borders. Guerrero had spoken against attempts to besmirch the reputation of the agency and its officials, saying the operation is proof of the hard work and sacrifice by the bureau. “We are confident of the kind of work that we do, especially when it comes to stopping the smuggling of agricultural products. As of June 22 this year, 3,413 laboratory-confirmed monkeypox cases and one death have been reported to the WHO, from 50 countries. The countries with three-figure case numbers are Britain (793), Germany (521), Spain (520), Portugal (317), France (277), Canada (210), the Netherlands (167) and the United States (142). The vast majority of cases so far have been observed in men who have sex with men, of young age, chiefly in urban areas, in “clustered social and sexual networks”, according to the WHO.

Beijing slams NATO on ‘completely futile’ warning BEIJING on Thursday slammed NATO over a “completely futile” warning in which the group said for the first time in a guiding blueprint that China’s power challenges the military alliance. The response came after NATO’s strategic concept, published at a summit in Madrid said Beijing’s stated ambitions and coercive policies challenged its interests, security, and values. NATO also said that China’s closer ties to Russia went against Western in-

terests, drawing a fiery response from Beijing. “NATO’s so-called new strategic concept document disregards facts, confuses black and white... (and) smears China’s foreign policy,” foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a regular briefing Thursday. He added that China “firmly opposes it.” “We would like to warn NATO that hyping up the so-called China threat is

completely futile,” Zhao told reporters. Leading NATO power the United States has pushed for the alliance to pay greater attention to China, despite reluctance from some allies to switch attention away from its focus on Europe. Beijing has refused to condemn its ally Russia over the invasion of Ukraine, and the two countries have drawn closer in the political, trade and military spheres as part of a “no limits” relationship. AFP

Last week the UN health agency convened an emergency committee of experts to decide if monkeypox constitutes a so-called Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), the highest alarm that the WHO can sound. But a majority found the situation had not yet crossed that threshold. Nonetheless, “they acknowledged the emergency nature of the event and that controlling the further spread requires intense response efforts,” Tedros said. The WHO chief called for equitable access to counter-measures like vaccines and antivirals and the systematic collection of clinical data to inform future recommendations. AFP

CHR hits NTC order blocking 26 websites By Rio N. Araja THE Commission on Human Rights (CHR) on Thursday slammed the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) on the regulator’s order to internet service providers to block 26 websites supposedly affiliated with terrorist groups. CHR executive director Jacqueline Ann de Guia said the commission has recognized that to address terrorism and to prevent the spread of disinformation both uphold human rights, but “at the same time, access to accurate information allows people to make informed decisions and participate in different affairs, including governance.” “In this regard, the role of the government, as the prime duty-holder, is to ensure that there is a balance among rights—not treat them as competing values,” she added. She said a safe environment enables a dignified life. In a June 6 letter, National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. noted that the Anti-Terrorism Council issued three resolutions declaring the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s ArmyNational Democratic Front and their central committee members as terrorists and terrorist organizations. “In this regard, may we request the NTC to issue legal instruments to order Philippine internet service providers to block access to the following websites affiliated to and are supporting these terrorists and terrorist organizations,” he said.

Former Camarines Sur Rep. Andaya passes away By Maricel V. Cruz FORMER Camarines Sur Rep. Rolando Andaya Jr. has passed away. The passing of Andaya, 53, was announced by his family on a social media page Thursday. “We request for your fervent prayers for his eternal repose, and to allow us, his family, to

grieve privately our loss,” his children Ranton and Katrina wrote. This developed as legislators and friends of Andaya mourned the latter’s passing. A fellow Bicolano, Rep. Joey Sarte Salceda of Albay also mourned the passing of Andaya. “I grieve the loss of my friend and

longtime colleague, Rolando ‘Nonoy’ Andaya Jr., and condole with his bereaved children. We were colleagues both in Congress and in the PGMA cabinet. His father, Rolando Sr., was a mentor to me, who provided me with opportunities for success, that very few senior members are willing to give freshmen congressmen,” Salceda said.

More rebel camps turning into agri areas in BARMM By Nash B. Maulana

OATH OF OFFICE. Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval took her oath of office before Senator Cynthia Villar at the San Bartolome Parish Church on Thursday. Andrew Rabulan

COTABATO CITY—Moro provinces in the south are taking off from age-old conflict into productivity in improving economic performance and emerging peace efforts, and even turning erst-

while rebel camps into production areas for agriculture. Earlier, foreign mission representatives visited Camp Darapanan in Maguindanao to launch continuing support programs for the peace process between the Government of the Philip-

pines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). The government is represented in both programs by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPPRU) under Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr.

whether we like it or not, we can either sink or swim with him. In saying that we can either sink or swim with the new President, there is the need for us to unite for the common good and national interest. But, in saying that there is a need for national unity for national interest and common good, I say that, for a democracy to succeed, what we need now is a responsible and credible opposition. It is for this reason that together, with all the challenges that President Marcos sees ahead of him, there is now the question on who will head a responsible and credible opposition. I note that the defeated opposition candidate for President, Robredo, wants to make herself relevant. There are reports coming from the Robredo camp that she wants to lead a campaign against disinformation and misinformation, apparently in an attempt to make relevant the discounted issues of Martial Law, together with alleged atrocities and ill-gotten wealth. But, how can Robredo still be relevant when everybody knows that together with her defeat, the ruling opposition, the Liberal Party, or the Yellows turned “pinkos,” also meant the end of the Liberal party and Yellows turned “pinkos?” While it’s still too early to guess who will lead a responsible and credible opposition, which is badly needed for a democracy to succeed, with the need for assent and dissent, I’m sure somebody will rise up to the occasion, not necessarily from the minority group in the Senate where the opposition usually comes from, but even from the Senate super majority itself. But, “who” is the big question. Every student of political science knows only too well that in a democracy where we live, it’s essential for the need of a responsible and credible opposition, but who? Just recall that the Senate serves as the check and balance of the executive. It’s for this reason why people expect that responsible and credible opposition will eventually come from the Senate. That’s now the great guessing game.

The young Marcos can now claim that he’s the first majority President, having clearly more than 50 percent of 64 million registered votes As a journalist who covered Presidents from President Ramon Magsaysay, I say that in BBM’s choices for members of his Cabinet, it has been “so far, so good” that we can look up to better days ahead. More importantly, BBM has shown what it takes to be a leader, showing political will by taking over the secretaryship of the Department of Agriculture “for now” to meet the growing threat of a looming food crisis. Thus, BBM is expected to show the same political will in meeting all other challenges like high prices, joblessness and rising incidence of poverty and hunger. Santa Banana, indeed the future looks good for us Filipinos within the next six years to come. But, what is clearly needed is for us Filipinos to be united for the common good and national interest, and that, to me, is the greatest challenge to all for President Marcos. I have said this before and I say it again that

underworld that the Marcos Jr. government will not hesitate to use the strong arm of the law to fight this baneful curse that has destroyed our youth and wrecked many families in the process. During the term of President Marcos Sr., many hospitals were established all over the country. Metro Manila had the good fortune of hosting many new hospitals during that period. Those hospitals include the annex building of the Philippine General Hospital, the Philippine Heart Center, the Lung Center of the Philippines,

YESTERDAY, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. took his oath of office as the 17th President of the Philippines. In a solemn ceremony outside the National Museum in Manila, President Marcos Jr. promised the Filipino people a government that will attend to the needs of the country in the spirit of national unity and the common desire for hope and a better future for all. The newly minted President also promised to continue the laudable projects undertaken by his popular predecessor, ex-President Rodrigo Duterte. Those projects include the continuation of Duterte’s massive infrastructure program, an improved transportation and communication system, a stable economy and food security, among others. President Marcos Jr. says he will deal with Communist China’s aggressive behavior in the West Philippine Sea without compromising Philippine sovereignty. For that purpose, the blueprint of his late father, President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., regarding the country’s foreign policy in his time, will provide very valuable pointers. Many Filipinos also hope and pray that President Marcos Jr. will continue ex-President Duterte’s tough stance against the drug menace in the country. Duterte crippled the drug lords during his time; Marcos Jr. should finish off the drug lords once and for all. Back in January 1973, the martial law administration of the elder Marcos ordered the execution by firing squad of the infamous Chinese drug lord Lim Seng at Fort Bonifacio in Taguig. After that demonstration of political will on the part of the government, the remaining drug lords in the Philippines fled in fear. For several years after that, the country was virtually free of the drug menace. Hopefully, the new President can use his moral ascendancy over Congress and convince the legislature to revive the death penalty in the country, even just for convicted drug lords and their deplorable kind. That should send the message to the narcotics

That should send the message to the narcotics underworld that the Marcos Jr. government will not hesitate to use the strong arm of the law to fight this baneful curse that has destroyed our youth and wrecked many families in the process the Kidney Center of the Philippines, the Children’s Hospital in Quezon City, and a revitalized GSIS Hospital also in Quezon City, later renamed the Ospital ng Bagong Lipunan, and currently called the East Avenue Medical Center. No other President of the Philippines has done so much for health care in the country. For the record, the Marcos Sr. hospitals saved the lives of many Filipinos during the height of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. Happily, President Marcos Jr. promises to continue his father’s legacy in this regard, and establish more of the badly needed hospitals. Filipinos will be truly grateful if Marcos Jr. succeeds in doing so. Full version on www.manilastandard.net

The dream begins IN PHILIPPINE democracy’s finest hour, Ferdinand Romualdez “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. took over as the 17th president of the Republic, at exactly 12 noon, yesterday, Thursday, June 30, 2022. It was exactly 20 years and 66 days since his father, Ferdinand Edralin Marcos Sr. first took his oath as the 10th president. The elder Marcos was the first and only president to be reelected thrice – 1969, 1981, and 1986

-- enabling him to reign for 20 years, the longest of any president. He was ousted by People Power on Feb. 25, 1986. In May this year, Marcos Jr. took presidential power back, to hold it for the next six years. Snappy in a well-pressed piña barong and dark grey pants, Marcos, 64, recited his oath, in Pilipino, before Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo, in a 60-second solemn but simple rite of passage. At the end of that shining moment, nearly ev-

Hard work ahead RESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. knows the task at hand.

key food items and the peso depreciation as the primary sources of inflationary pressures in June. The Marcos administration must also deal with the current pandemic. The government must effectively contain COVID-19 cases across the Philippines. The economy cannot fully reopen and generate more jobs if the virus spread is unchecked. Food security will be another major concern of the new administration. The Russia-Ukraine war has exposed the vulnerability of Philippine agriculture. It is high time the Philippines modernized the farming sector. Post-harvest facilities are lacking and contribute to low prices of agricultural produce in the countryside. Cold storage facilities are scarce to help fisherfolk preserve their daily catch and command good prices in the market. President Marcos is aware of the challenges in making the Philippine economy more vibrant. It takes hard work to accomplish the job. He should be up for it.

creased power rates. The new administration, thus, will have to rein in the inflation rate before it does real damage to a recovering economy. President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration has identified the causes of rising prices.

He must roll up his sleeves and prime the pump to reinvigorate the Philippine economy and get millions of Filipinos out of the poverty line. It is not an easy job. Like his predecessors, Mr. Marcos will focus on the economy on day one, identify the persistent problems that hobble and prevent it from making a full stride. Past presidents tried their best but the Philippine economy still cannot match the feats of its Southeast Asian neighbors like Thailand and even Vietnam – which have attracted far bigger foreign investments and substantially reduced their cost of doing business. Rising inflation will be the main concern of the new administration because high prices erode the purchasing power of consumers. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas expects the inflation rate in June to have reached as high as 6.5 percent due to weaker peso, higher oil prices and in-

Rising inflation will be the main concern of the new administration because high prices erode the purchasing power of consumers It is now up to the Marcos government to decide on which set of menus will be effective in softening prices. The new administration AFTER an unsuccessful bid for the vice-presidency in 2016, Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. made a spectacular political comeback this year, posting a landslide victory in the presidential race with his closest rival, Vice President Leni Robredo, garnering just 15 million votes as against his 31 million votes. No doubt, the new Chief Executive’s dominance in this year’s race was the inevitable outcome of support from the so-called ‘Solid North’ nurtured by his family since the 1960s as well as the Mindanao mass base of his teammate, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, who likewise trounced her nearest rival with plenty to spare. Opinion surveys since October last year, when those wanting to run for president, vice president,

that still remains a distinct threat could prove to the more difficult one. No doubt, the country faces a multiplicity of challenges in the economic, political, social and foreign policy fronts that will test the mettle of the new administration. Marcos Jr. showed that he has his priorities down pat by assembling a powerhouse economic team consisting of prominent economists from the University of the Philippines. The new Finance Secretary, Benjamin Diokno, had been plucked from his previous position as head honcho of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. The Economic Planning Secretary and concurrent Director General of the National Economic and Development Authority, Arsenio Balisacan, used to

aire Elon Musk’s satellite internet service project called Starlink. Another positive development for the new administration is the recent passage of the amended Public Service Act that will allow more overseas businesses to keep full ownership of their local operations. We’re well aware that there’s growing public clamor, especially among the public transport sector, for the new administration to suspend the excise tax on fuel products. But experts assert that while this would somehow relieve the onerous burden of higher transport costs and the resulting increase in prices of other consumer goods, it would be counterproductive in the long run as it would deprive the government of much-needed revenues that can be used for infrastructure and vital social services such as education and health. News reports indicate that the transport sector is now in the throes of a serious crisis as many jeepney drivers have either stopped plying their trade as they can no longer earn enough to feed their families. Motorcycle riders performing delivery services to the big online sellers on a daily basis face the same dire situation. It appears that the Marcos administration would rather give cash assistance or “ayuda” to those adversely affected by higher prices rather than suspend excise taxes on fuel. This could be the more pragmatic solution that will benefit those who need help the most. In any event, we hope the new administration will give priority to helping those sectors affected by high prices. By the same token, we expect the new set of leaders to ramp up efforts to further facilitate the ease of doing business to attract more local and foreign investments that would create more job opportunities for the labor force amid massive job losses at the height of COVID-19.

THE six-year term of President Bongbong Marcos technically started at high noon yesterday, June 30, 2022, and likewise ends at high noon on June 30, 2028. The first 100 days of the new President will be the most critical of his six-year term, so critical and so definitive that every move and every statement of BBM could constitute a headline. My gulay, this had always been the case of every President whenever he assumed office. The clear advantage of the young Marcos is that he won by landslide, which clearly showed that the majority of voters gave him a clear mandate for his presidency by over 17 million margin from the opposition candidate, former Vice President Leni Robredo. And, more importantly, the young Marcos can now claim that he is the first majority President, having clearly more than 50 percent of 64 million registered votes.

The May 9 political exercise merely confirmed that his pre-election advantage was no fluke. Marcos Jr., therefore, assumes the presidency with no less than 31 million Filipinos behind him. We may safely assume that the rest of the electorate who voted for the other candidates have by now grudgingly accepted the reality of a Marcos Jr. presidency, with the opposition already wracking their brains for the winning strategy in the next election. Property relations in marriage WHEN a couple agrees to enter into the permanent union of marriage, their property relations shall commence at the precise moment the marriage is celebrated (Article 88, Family Code). While this may be the least of their concerns at that point, their property relations will be an important factor when they decide to purchase a house, invest in business, end their marriage, or when one of them dies. The property relations of the spouses shall be governed in the following order of precedence: (a) the marriage settlement executed before the marriage; (b) the provisions of the Family Code; and (c) the local custom (Article 74, Family Code). In this case, the marriage settlement shall be in writing, signed by the parties, and executed before the celebration of the marriage (Article 77, Family Code). In the absence of a marriage settlement or if the property relation agreed upon is void, absolute community of property (ACOM) shall govern (Article 75, Family Code). For the pre-nuptial agreement to affect third persons, it must be registered with the local civil registry where the marriage contract is recorded and in the proper registries of property (Article 77, Family Code).

Once marriage is celebrated, ACOM shall consist of all the properties owned by the spouses at the time of the celebration of the marriage and those acquired thereafter (Article 91, Family Code). For instance, if a rich lady marries a man whose only possession is a motorcycle, the marriage will result in the husband becoming co-owner of all the properties of the wife. The properties acquired during the marriage by gratuitous title such as donations or inheritance, with or without a will, shall be excluded from the ACOM. However, it will form part of the ACOM if the donor, testator, or grantor expressly provides or declares it to be so (Article 92, Family Code). Also excluded from the ACOM are properties for the personal or exclusive use of either spouse. Examples are their personal wardrobe, electronic gadgets, and personal care products. However, jewelry or any personal properties of value shall form part of the ACOM (Article 92, Family Code). The administration and enjoyment of the ACOM shall belong to both spouses jointly. In case of disagreement, the husband’s decision will prevail, subject to the recourse of the wife to the court within five years from the date of the contract implementing the husband’s decision (Article 96, Family Code).

In the absence of a marriage settlement or if the property relation agreed upon is void, absolute community of property shall govern Any agreement on the property relations for a future marriage shall be void if the marriage does not take place (Article 81, Family Code). The conjugal partnership of gains (CON-P), another form of property relation, will apply only if there is a marriage settlement between future spouses. It is interesting to note that before the effectivity of the current Family Code on August 3, 1988, the governing property relation between spouses in the absence of a marriage settlement was CONP and not ACOM. eryone, led by the First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos and Vice President Sara Zimmerman Duterte., was teary-eyed. Xi says Hong Kong ‘reborn of fire’ C

HINESE President Xi Jinping said Hong Kong had been “reborn of fire” as he arrived Thursday to mark the 25th anniversary of the city’s handover, in his first visit since the business hub’s democracy movement was crushed.

Xi’s trip is a chance for the Chinese Communist Party to showcase its control after huge protests engulfed the city in 2019, prompting Beijing to impose a harsh crackdown. “In the past period, Hong Kong has experienced more than one serious test, and overcome more than one risk and challenge,” Xi said after arriving at a high-speed train station in the heart of the city. “After the storms, Hong Kong has been reborn of fire and emerged with robust vitality.” Friday’s anniversary also marks the halfway point of the 50-year governance model agreed by Britain and China under which the city would keep some autonomy and freedoms. Critics say a national security law imposed

by Beijing after the 2019 protests has eviscerated those promised freedoms. But Xi said Thursday “the facts have proved that One Country, Two Systems has great vitality.” “It can guarantee long-term stability and prosperity in Hong Kong, and defend the well-being of Hong Kong people,” he added. Xi’s visit is the first time he has left mainland China since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Accompanied by his wife Peng Liyuan and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, he was greeted at the station by school children waving flags and bouquets of flowers, as well as lion dancers and select accredited media. Details around the trip have been kept tightly under wraps, and the visit has sparked a massive security effort.

Government leaders have been forced into an anti-COVID “closed-loop” system, parts of the city shut down, and multiple journalists barred from Friday’s events. The Chinese leader will likely spend the night in neighbouring Shenzhen on the mainland. Those coming into Xi’s orbit during the trip, including the highest-ranking government officials, have been made to limit their social contacts, take daily PCR tests and check into a quarantine hotel in the days leading up to the visit. “To play safe, if we are going to meet the paramount leader and other leaders in close quarters, I think it is worthwhile to go into the closed-loop arrangements,” veteran pro-Beijing politician Regina Ip told AFP. Solon asks LTFRB to hasten grant of fuel subsidies By Macon Ramos-Araneta SENATOR Win Gatchalian has called on the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to speed up the distribution of fuel subsidies to targeted beneficiaries in the public transport sector. Gatchalian made the call as he is set to pursue the provision of the third tranche of fuel subsidy program to provide economic relief to the transport sector reeling from the effects of the spiraling oil prices. “Many (drivers) have stopped plying their routes, eventually losing their job,” he said. “The key here is speed in helping since time is of the essence,” said Gatchalian, chair of the Senate Committee on Energy. “Many have stopped plying their routes, eventually losing their job,” he said. “The key here is speed he giving of help since time is of the essence,” said Gatchalian, chair of the Senate Committee on Energy. Gathalian held a consultative meeting with the LTRFB to address runaway oil prices. He is eyeing another round of Pantawid Pasada Program amounting to P3,000 per month for the next five months. The distribution of the first tranche of the fuel subsidy for public utility drivers and operators, supposed to have been completed within the second week of May, had been derailed due to lack of existing database of the intended beneficiaries. LTFRB chief Martin Delgra told Gatchalian during the consultative meeting that it was only this month that they were able to complete the database of qualified and legitimate franchise holders after the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) submitted the list of eligible tricycle drivers.

PCCI urges ARTA to help streamline BPI functions By Othel V. Campos

T

HE Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) seeks the intervention of the

Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA) to help streamline the regulatory functions of the Bureau of Plan Industry (BPI) for the sake of the agri-food stakeholders. PCCI president George Barcelon said their agriculture cluster’s sentiments were consistent with the group’s goal of automating their services for business continuity and efficiency. Barcelon also said the business community was optimistic that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will sustain ARTA’s reform programs to ensure sus-

tained business confidence and trust in the government. “The PCCI commends ARTA for having accomplished quite a number of milestones that really benefitted the business community. We are happy that ARTA and PCCI have a strong partnership in implementing these policy reforms in the government,” Barcelon said. He also said PCCI supports the National Effort for the Harmonization of Efficiency Measures of Interrelated

Agencies (NEHEMIA) program of ARTA, meant to address overregulation and promote interconnectivity among government agencies to eliminate redundant processes has yielded positive results. Among ARTA’s notable accomplishments that greatly benefitted the business sector were in the areas of telecommunication and connectivity, food and pharmacology, logistics and housing, and construction. The ARTA has released three joint memorandum circulars (JMCs) aimed at expediting the building of telco towers by reducing the number of permits from 13 to just eight, the documentary requirements from 86 to 15, and the length of time for processing from the usual 241 days to only 16 days.

Lawmakers cite need to extend free rides program

By Maricel V. Cruz

TWO lawmakers on Thursday cited the need for the government to continue its Libreng Sakay transport program to help commuters cope with the impact of rising fuel prices. Rep. Bernadette Herrera of Bagong Henerasyon party-list suggested ways for the transport program to continue. She appealed to the Departments of Transportation (DOTr), and the Department of Budget and Management to realign some of the unallocated funds and cumulative savings so far to keep Libreng Sakay going and have it extended until December

31, 2022. Herrera also said another way for Libreng Sakay to continue after June 30 is for the Department of Finance (DOF) and the DOTr to invoke the last provision on safety nets in the TRAIN Law to allocate fuel excise tax proceeds. “If the Executive Branch needs more funds because what they need to do is not in the 2022 GAA (General Appropriations Act), they can borrow maybe P250 billion to P500 billion at zero interest from the Bangko Sentral,” Herrera said. “The Executive Branch borrowed from the BSP in 2020 when funds were needed

for urgent pandemic needs. Now, the urgency to respond to is rising fuel prices and elevated inflation. The Bangko Sentral has enough funds to lend to the DOF,” she added. “I ask incoming Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno and incoming Transportation Secretary Jimmy Bautista to please extend Libreng Sakay through these or other means available to them.” For his part, Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte expressed hopes that the Marcos administration would be able to find ways of continuing to fund the program even at least until the end of the year.

RTC convicts female NDF leader in ’75 murder case

THE Taguig Regional Trial Court found National Democratic Front of the Philippines peace consultant and spokesperson Concha Araneta guilty of murder and sentenced her with life imprisonment. According to a press briefer, the court found Araneta guilty beyond reasonable doubt of murder over the death of Metudio Inisa at Sitio Agbanuod in Madalag, Aklan in 1975. “Wherefore, premises considered,

judgment is hereby rendered finding accused Concha Araneta, or alias ‘Maria Concepcion Araneta’, ‘Chacon’, ‘Jojo’, ‘Etang’, guilty beyond reasonable doubt of the crime of murder… and is hereby sentenced to suffer imprisonment of reclusion perpetua,” the verdict stated. The Department of Justice (DOJ), said Inisa was staying with his brother-in-law in September 1975 when nine individuals

— two women and seven men — carrying firearms arrived at their residence. One of the individuals introduced himself as a member of the New People’s Army. One of the women, meanwhile, later asked Inisa why he joined the Philippine Constabulary. “And when Inisa was not able to answer, she drew a gun and shot Inisa in the head. After which, the men fired several shots at Inisa,” the DOJ narrated. JULY 1, 2022

DESPITE the controversies that persistently haunted it, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said it has significantly improved its services under the watch of President Duterte. BI Commissioner Jaime Morente said It was a very challenging six years of Duterte administration as the bureau faced numerous challenges including scandals, and adversities. “However, we soldiered on because we remained steadfast in our aim to improve the BI,” he added. Morente said that despite being rocked by these scandals, they have moved forward, and continued implementing changes that would bring about a better bureau. As a corruption deterrent at the airports, Morente said they have implemented both short- and medium-term solutions to eliminate irregularities by implementing continual reshuffle of all personnel assigned at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). Airport operations were also reorganized by assigning vital units to serve as a layer of auditing and checks and balances for airport personnel. Morente likewise pushed for the long-term solution of updating the Philippine Immigration Act, which would answer salary woes, remove systemic issues, plug loopholes in policies, update fines and penalties, ensure proper division of power, and confer to the Commissioner proper disciplinary powers, which he sees as the strongest deterrent against corruption.

Salmonella seen in Belgian choco factory SALMONELLA bacteria have been discovered in the world’s biggest chocolate plant, run by Swiss giant Barry Callebaut in the Belgian town of Wieze, the firm said Thursday. A company spokesman told AFP that production had been halted at the factory, which produces liquid chocolate in wholesale batches for 73 clients making confectionaries. “All products manufactured since the test have been blocked,” spokesman Korneel Warlop said. “Barry Callebaut is currently contacting all customers who may have received contaminated products. Chocolate production in Wieze remains suspended until further notice.” Most of the products discovered to be contaminated are still on the site, he said. But the firm has contacted all its clients and asked them not to ship any products they have made with chocolate made since June 25 at these Wieze plant, which is in Flanders, northwest of Brussels. Belgium’s food safety agency AFSCA has been informed and a spokesman told AFP it had opened an investigation. AFP

NGCP on track to finish P52-b Mindanao cable By Alena Mae S. Flores NATIONAL Grid Corp. of the Philippines said Thursday it is on track to completing the P52-billion Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Project by the end of the year. It said it finished several components of the project, including the Santander and Dapitan Cable Terminal Stations, the 350-kiloVolt submarine cable and the Lala-Aurora 138kV transmission line. The MVIP will link the Mindanao grid to the Visayas grid through a high voltage direct current system with a 450-megawatt initial capacity. “NGCP is happy to report that these critical MVIP components are now complete and ready for energization. We hope this would finish on time, but factors beyond our control required an adjustment to our project timeline. We are working doubletime to complete the overhead transmission line portions and advance the project to its commissioning stage to connect the Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao grids,” the company said. NGCP said it completed the construction of the cable terminal stations in Santander, Cebu and Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte and installed two 92-km 350kV high voltage direct current power cables and two 92-km fiber optic cables. It conducted site acceptance tests at the Dapitan and Santander CTS to ensure the facilities meet requirements. Work on the submarine cable component started in November 2018 and was originally slated to be completed in June 2021. NGCP said the restriction on the entry of foreign experts, work suspension and manpower reduction at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to significant delays in the project’s execution. The damage to submarine cable 1 caused by a third-party vessel also delayed construction activities, with repairs completed only in November 2021. NGCP successfully energized the Lala-Aurora 138kV Transmission Line in February to improve the reliability of power transmission services between Lanao del Norte and provinces in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

BSP says inflation in June topped 6% due to weak peso THE Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said Thursday inflation in June likely reached as high as 6.5 percent, up from 5.4 percent in May, on weaker peso and higher oil and power rates. It said in a statement the June inflation rate likely settled within a range of 5.7 percent to 6.5 percent. The Philippine Statistics Authority will release the official June inflation rate next week. “The continued increase in domestic oil prices, upward adjustment in electricity rates, higher prices of key food items and peso depreciation are the primary sources of inflationary pressures during the month. These could be offset in part by lower price of LPG and fish,” the BSP said. The peso slumped to the 55-a-dollar level this week, the lowest in more than 16 years, as investors preferred the greenback following the aggressive interest rate adjustment made by the US Federal Reserve. The peso closed at 54.975 on Thursday, stronger than 55.06 a dollar on Wednesday. Michael Ricafort, chief economist of Rizal Commercial Banking Corp., said in an emailed message that the peso recovered, following the recent decline in global crude oil prices. Inflation in May settled at 5.4 percent, a 42-month high, driven by higher prices of food, non-alcoholic beverages and transport. The May inflation was the fastest since the 6.1 percent registered in November 2018. This brought inflation in the first five months to 4.1 percent, slightly higher than the upper end of the target range of 2 percent to 4 percent for the year. The BSP said it would continue to closely monitor emerging price developments to enable timely intervention to arrest emergence of further second-round effects, consistent with its mandate of price and financial stability. Business Insurance executive sees 8.2% GDP growth in 2022 By Julito G. Rada

A

TOP insurance executive said Thursday he expects the Philippine economy to grow 8.2 percent this year despite the headwinds from both domestic and external fronts, including rising inflation rate, policy normalization in advanced economies and the geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe.

Sun Life Investment Management and Trust Corp. president and chief investment officer Mike Enriquez said in an online briefing while rising inflation would impact economic growth in 2022, “the domestic economy is okay.” “The economy may continue to grow despite higher oil prices and inflation,”

said Enriquez who predicted a GDP growth of 8.2 percent, exceeding the government’s target of 7 percent to 8 percent expansion this year. Enriquez said the forecast considered the rising inflation rate, which hit a 42-month high of 5.4 percent in May, up from 4.9 percent in April. He said the GDP growth in the second quarter might slightly taper from the strong 8.3-percent growth in the first quarter because of the base effects and inflation. The Financial Stability Coordination Council earlier said the domestic economy remained resilient in the past six months despite the global uncertainties that could have stifled growth and impact the stability of the financial system. The FSCC is composed of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the Department of Finance, the Insurance Commission, the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corp. and the Securities and Exchange Commission. It is the venue for financial market authorities to identify, monitor, manage and mitigate the build-up of systemic risks in the local financial system.

Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed that the GDP grew 8.3 percent in the first quarter, faster than 7.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2021 and the last year’s full-year growth of 5.7 percent. Domestic and external headwinds prompted the inter-agency Development Budget Coordination Committee to slightly lower the gross domestic product growth estimate this year to 7 percent to 8 percent from the previous assumption of 7 percent to 9 percent, taking into account the continuing external risks, particularly the war in Eastern Europe and monetary policy normalization in the United States. The DBCC is composed of the heads of the National Economic and Development Authority, Department of Budget and Management and Department of Finance. The economy contracted by 9.6 percent in 2020 at the start of the pandemic. The government’s massive vaccination rollout enabled the economy to gradually reopen that boosted business and consumer confidence beginning 2021.

IN BRIEF SMC installs 500-MW battery storage systems

CONGLOMERATE San Miguel Corp. said Thursday it completed 500-megawatt-hours of battery energy storage system facilities to address the need for grid frequency fluctuation, voltage stability and power reserves. “We now have an installed storage capacity of 500 MWh that are ready for deployment any time. We hope to complete even more facilities, and bring our total capacity to 700 MWh by the end of this year,” SMC president Ramon Ang said. Ang said the rest of the BESS projects are in various stages of development. “But we are looking to complete all 31 facilities with a total storage capacity of 1000 MWh within the next 12 months,” he said. SMC, through power arm SMC Global Power Holdings Corp. , is spending over $1 billion to build the 31 new BESS nationwide. “With the integration of this technology into our electrical grid, we are confident we can improve power quality and help address the intermittent nature of renewables,” Ang said. DoubleDragon acquires 9,000-sqm property in Hokkaido, Japan By Jenniffer B. Austria PROPERTY developer DoubleDragon Corp. embarked on a global expansion of its hotel business with the acquisition of 9,000 square meters of land in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan. DoubleDragon said in a disclosure to the stock exchange Thursday subsidiaries DDPC Worldwide Pte. Ltd. and Hotel 101 Worldwide Private Limited paid the required deposit to purchase the land, which will be the future site of the first international Hotel 101 development. It did not provide other details, including the timetable for the construction of the new hotel. DoubleDragon said the upcoming Hotel 101-Niseko is expected to be

patronized by local domestic travelers in Japan and foreign tourists, including Filipino travelers who visit Hokkaido for leisure. “Hotel 101 rooms globally are intended to be typical or similar in size and look catering to the mid-end market, enabling a highly efficient booking process, allowing guests to know exactly what to expect in a Hotel 101 wherever it may be located,” DoubleDragon said. “The concept patent of Hotel 101’s pioneering condotel concept has already been filed and the Hotel 101 trademark and country specific domains have been secured in various countries globally,” it said. The first Hotel 101 project abroad is expected to give Filipino investors

an opportunity to make their first overseas real estate investment with affordable payment terms for a hybrid condotel. Based on the Hotel 101’s concept, all the units will be identical, allowing all owners to have an equal share in the revenues of the property. The asset light concept allows DoubleDragon to generate revenue and income twice, first from the preselling of the units, and once the project is constructed, from recurring income from hotel operations. Hotel 101 adopts dynamic pricing on its room rates, similar to airline tickets where price moves up and down depending on the real-time supply and demand on the chosen date of booking.

Portion of Samar Pacific Coastal Road opens By Darwin G. Amojelar THE Department of Public Works and Highways said Thursday a major component of the P1.126-billion Samar Pacific Coastal Road Project in Eastern Visayas opened to the public after four years of construction. “After four years of challenging construction, the partial opening of the Samar Pacific Coastal Road is a huge step to the realization of vision to provide comfortable and improved interconnectivity that will support sustainable agricultural development and contribute to food selfsufficiency program and in sustaining peace and development efforts in Northern Samar,” said DPWH Undersecretary and “Build, Build, Build” program chief implementer Emil Sadain. The onset of the pandemic and inclement weather condition in Eastern Visayas brought major hurdles in the construction, delaying the full completion of the Samar Pacific Coastal Road which is one of the

119 infrastructure flagship projects under the “Build, Build, Build” program. About 29 typhoons affected the project since it started in May 2018, but the DPWH together with contractor Ilsung Construction Co. Ltd. of Korea in partnership Pacific Concrete Products stayed focus to deliver the government’s promise in connecting people and places. The DPWH said it is committed to fully completing the 11.60-kilometer two-lane road, with the construction of remaining three-kilometer segment with two other small bridges. The coastal road project will link the “Pacific towns” in Northern Samar. The project starts at the Simora Junction and traverses to the remote coastal villages of Laoang, Catubig and Palapag. “This road will complement and eventually establish the Samar Island circumferential road that is seen to bring muchneeded community development in these small towns and overall economic progress in the province,” Sadain said.

POC hails president Marcos’ focus on sports T

HE Philippine Olympic Committee expressed invigorated confidence that sports will have its prominent nook in the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

“We are thankful to the new administration, to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., for putting sports on a rightful platform in his administration,” said POC President Rep. Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino moments after Marcos’s inaugural speech at the National

Museum on Thursday. “The POC, and the whole of Philippine sports for that matter, is more hopeful now that our athletes will be given more priority and attention under President Marcos,” Tolentino said. Twenty-five athletes and coaches

in wushu sepak takraw, jiu jitsu, judo, kurash, shooting, rowing and gymnastics marched during the military civic parade honoring the oath-taking of Marcos as the 17th president of the Philippines. “The athletes’ inclusion in the parade signals how serious President Marcos’s outlook on sports will be,” Tolentino said. “Sports is a tried, tested and certified unifying factor among us Filipinos—time and again, we unite each time our ath-

letes compete, and win, abroad.” The Philippine Sports Commission coordinated the athletes’ inclusion in the parade that included key government installations, including frontliners who fought Covid-19 during the pandemic. Mr. Marcos’s predecessor, former President Rodrigo Duterte, has always recognized the contribution of Filipino athletes to his administration, honoring them with recognition and incentives in Malacanang.

Sweet 16 for Djokovic as Murray exits Wimbledon LONDON—Defending champion Novak Djokovic reached the Wimbledon third round for the 16th time on Wednesday as career-long rival Andy Murray suffered his earliest-ever exit from the All England Club. Top seed Djokovic brushed aside 79th-ranked Thanasi Kokkinakis of Australia 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 and will face Serbian compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic for a last-16 place. “I’m very happy with my performance. I started very well, solid from the back of the court,” said Djokovic, who is looking to join Pete Sampras as a seven-time Wimbledon champion.

NZ Tall Blacks bludgeon PH Gilas, 106-60 By Peter Atencio AN INTACT and impressive New Zealand Tall Blacks outplayed the undermanned Gilas Pilipinas, 106-60, in the 2023 FIBA World Cup Asian men’s basketball qualifiers third window at EventFinda Stadium on Thursday in Auckland, New Zealand. The Tall Blacks, with Dion Prewster and Finn Delaney shooting 15 and 14 points, respectively, completed a sweep of their four-game assignment in Group A, winning all of their games via double-digit margins. Gilas, with Carl Tamayo scoring a game-high 16 points, will face India in their final match on Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. The Philippines, which has a 1-2 win-loss slate, is already sure of reaching the next round, which begins on August 25. The qualification of the Tall Blacks, the Philippines and India was made possible following the withdrawal of Korea a few months ago after many of its players tested positive for COVID-19. Gilas struggled without Tamayo, who left in the final 7:50 with a hurt knee following a collision with Tom Vodanovich. The Filipinos were already trailing, 15-23, early in the second quarter, when the Tall Blacks unleashed 22-5 spurt to take a 47-21 halftime spread. Gilas was never able to catch up.

“I made him work for every point and worked him around the court,” added the 20-time major winner. Kokkinakis had likened Djokovic to a “brick wall” before the match. “It was one-way traffic. I got chopped today,” said the 26-year-old Australian after his Centre Court torment. Former world number one Murray, the 2013 and 2016 champion, went down 6-4, 7-6 (7/4), 6-7 (3/7), 6-4 to big-serving John Isner in his secondround clash. Murray, now 52 in the rankings, failed to break serve once against 2018 semi-finalist Isner, who unleashed 36 aces and 82 winners in total.

“He didn’t give me lots of chances,” said Murray, whose previous earliest exits came in the third round in 2005 and 2021. “My game was in a good place. I felt good on the court, just couldn’t get the win.” Isner, 37, was gracious in the aftermath of his first win in nine meetings against the Briton. “I am most definitely not a better tennis player than Andy Murray. I might have been a little bit better than him today,” said the American. Isner also took his career aces total to 13,724 to sit just four behind the record held by Ivo Karlovic.

Gilas bows to Samoa in FIBA girls’ tilt THE Gilas girls fell in a 73-88 setback to Samoa on Wednesday night in the semifinals of the 2022 FIBA Women’s Under-16 Asian Championship’s Division B at the Prince Hamza Sports Hall in Amman, Jordan. The Samoans avenged their 9465 loss to Gilas on Sunday as they held off the Filipinas with their speeding shooting. This put the Samoans into the winner-take-all finals with Syria, while the Filipinas will play Lebanon for third place. Kira-May Filemu, Azaleeah Oloapu and Sienna Tutani imposed their size and power on the floors on the Gilas girls to carry Samoa to a 53-30 halftime lead. Oluapo gave Samoa its biggest lead of the game, 59-32, with 7:37 left in the third quarter. Naomi Panganiban shot 15 points, while Ava Fajardo got 14 points on 14 attempts. Leading scorer Kristan Yumul added 13 points, but went just 5-of20 from the field while Gabby Ramos was limited to eight points and eight rebounds, as well. Lebanon is in a clash with Gilas after their 63-78 loss to Syria. The Filipinas managed to cut Samoa’s lead to 13, 74-61, early in the final quarter. But Filemu and Peata Manumaleuga erupted with baskets to help seal the final ticket for Samoa. Peter Atencio

Eyes on the bigger picture ON MONDAY, July 4, the Philippine Women’s National Football Team will open its campaign in the AFF Women’s Championship 2022 against the Matildas of Australia. The Filipinas are in Group A along with Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia. Vietnam, Myanmar, Timore-Leste, Cambodia and Laos are in Group B. To say that the group is tough is another understatement -- a familiar line here at The Designated Kit Man. Nevertheless, ever the optimist, we are hoping for the best for the national team, as always is the case whenever a national team competes in an international tournament. Honestly, I can’t help but keep my hopes high for the team. It is coming from historic back-to-back wins against Bosnia and Herzegovina and a moraleboosting game against Ireland before flying to the country for the AFF Cup. The team also won its first medal in the Southeast Asian Games after more than three decades of futility. The team’s talent pool is quite deep that it enabled head coach Alen Stajcic the opportunity to test his players and their abilities in their last friendlies. And of course, the team has qualified to the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The team is fit and ready, not to mention that morale is very high. Which is very important especially now that the Filipinas will get to play before the local crowd for the first time in the pandemic era. Obviously, the home court advantage will also play a key role as the team will definitely have the crowd as the 12th woman on the pitch. “I think it will mean that much more to get to play in front of all of our friends, family and supporters. Since we’ve been playing kind of all over now and haven’t really got to have that home field advantage, that home field crowd, and I think everyone’s just really excited for that. I think all the support we will have will really help us through this long tournament. So I know everyone’s really excited and really honored to be able to play in the Philippines,” Tahnai

Annis said. Dominique Randle also shared Annis’ enthusiasm in playing in the Philippines for the first time before their families and fans, who don’t get the opportunity to see them play “live.” “I think is a really good opportunity just to thank them for all that they’ve have done just to support us while we’ve been training competing. And I think it’s really great to feel that familial support. Now that we’re here, I think we just take every game one step at a time. And hopefully we channel that energy that we have from the fans and from our families and we can show our heart through the way that we play,” she said. Of course, a lot of credit should be given to the players and the coaching staff as well. The fruits of their sacrifices and efforts were evident in every game they played so far. So, pardon my enthusiasm for expecting a lot from the team like the majority of their fans. Stajcic, however, cautions against high expectations from the team. He said that the team is still evolving. He knows that they are competing in a very tough group, but he admitted playing at home is definitely a big boost. “There’s a lot of room for improvement in our game and and we’re working hard at training every single time and with video sessions and and all kinds of different methods of ensuring that everyone gets up to speed with becoming the best team we can be. We’re really happy with the progression we always are and we know we’re a word, hardworking team and disciplined and, and grateful for the opportunities we have to travel the world,” Stajcic said. But he agreed that playing in the Philippines will be very special. It is a good opportunity for the players to thank their families, fans and supporters by playing well against the powerhouse teams in the competitions. “We’re really looking forward to the next chapter and playing it on home soil is something special and and I’m sure something that the players are going to remember for the rest of their lives,” he said. Again, Stajcic reminded everyone that the AFF tournament, win or lose, is just part of preparations for a bigger goal. That the tournament is part of a long journey that will take a lot from his team. And his players know this, too, and well.

“The AFF is an important tournament but I’ve always got one eye on the World Cup and we’ve said right from the outset — and the players are well aware of this— that one of the main goals of this team is to build the depth of the team not only for cover within the team for tournaments like this, but to put pressure on positions as you know, we want 27, 28 or 30 players competing for those final 23 jerseys at the World Cup. We need that internal rivalry and players knowing that they have to perform to keep earning their jerseys,” he explained. He added that Australia and Thailand will offer the stiffest challenges in the group, but it doesn’t mean that the rest of the competitions will be easy. Despite these, Stajcic what will team learn during the tournament will be very important. “It’s going to be a very tough challenge. But playing against different styles is always the best part as well. And Australia presents a different challenge to Thailand and then Thailand presents a different challenge to all the other teams in the group, so there’s a lot of different aspects to the tournament that make it really exciting one wanting to win the tournament and win a medal which I believe we haven’t done before,” he said. After Australia, the Filipinas will face Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. All their games will be played at 7 p.m. at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. The top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals. Aside from the Filipinas, the country’s Under 19 team will also open their campaign in the AFF U-19 in Jakarta, Indonesia at 5 p.m. on July 1 against Thailand at the Patriot Candrabhaga Stadium. The boys are in Group A with Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam and Brunei. Wishing our teams all the best in the coming days and also for the country for the next six years as well. Compared to football, running and loving the Philippines are entirely different ball games. Stay safe. Stay happy peeps! Liza Soberano With a face, eye for fashion, and skills like Liza, it’s only a matter of time before she infiltrates the world’s entertainment capital. Although her recent ventures in Los Angeles started rumors of a break-up with her long-term boyfriend Enrique Gil, Liza clarified that they’re still together and happy, but it was the conflicting schedules that caused them to be apart in the meantime. Liza just seems to have it all, a flourishing career, adoring fans, and a supportive partner.

Dennis Padilla The public sympathized with Dennis during Father’s Day after he called out his children on social media for not greeting him. But when his son, Leon Barretto, posted an open letter on Instagram to shed some light on their feelings for their estranged father, the tables turned rapidly on Dennis. Simply, Leon and his sisters just wanted to be protected and accepted by their father. Dennis can start by discussing things privately to keep the public from bashing his children.

Kean Cipriano OPM fans were surprised by his decision to move on from the beloved band Callalily due to a strained relationship with his former bandmates. The band then changed its name to Lily and wrote cryptic messages on social media regarding Kean’s departure. Netizens root for ‘Ang Babae Sa Likod ng Face Mask’ episodes

Joseph Marco stars as the romantic lead Sieg

EPISODE 3 of Puregold Channel’s Ang Babae Sa Likod ng Face Mask rouses the show’s rabid romcom fans into feeling extraordinarily kilig, making them ask for more. It shows Malta getting thrilled over Sieg’s friend request, which she excitedly accepts after her mom Madam Baby nudges her to do it. However, their promising online friendship is strained by Malta’s lingering insecurity. She sticks to her face mask during their video chats, giving silly excuses for it. Malta even uses funny online filters to

keep hiding her face. The kilig, it seems, is so relatable that fans just lap it up. Viewer Olivia Ibatuan commented, “The story is funny but with a pinch, especially sa mga young ladies na ipinanganak na di nabigyan ng magandang face. Just like Herlene in the story, masyadong mababa ang confidence sa sarili. Nakakarelate ang marami sa kuwento.” Nenita Mahmood noted the powerful chemistry between the two leads. She commented, “Super ganda ng love story para sa akin. Bigla akong bumata, nakakakilig.” Celia Jane Bartolome added, “Hooked na ako sa love story ni Malta at Sieg.”

Meanwhile, other viewers continue rooting for the show. Jeseryl Maranan commented, “Bitin na nman ang kilig, sana araw araw na lang.” Arjayl Martel concurred, saying, “Waiting for 1 week is very difficult for us avid viewers but the episode really meets our expectations.” In the next episode, Malta and Sieg’s online friendship turns a month old. Will Malta continue ‘ducking for cover’ or will she finally reveal her face to Sieg? The plot unfolds in the forthcoming episodes of Ang Babae sa Likod ng Face Mask, showing every Saturday, at 7:00 p.m. on the official YouTube Puregold Channel.

Inspiring Filipino consumers to take action on climate change

Watsons Philippines Public Relations and Sustainability Director Viki Encarnacion

IN 2021, A.S. Watson reiterated its commitment to reduce the environmental impact of its business and announced new targets to accelerate its contribution to the fight against climate change. For its first face-to-face sustainability event dubbed “Do Good for the Planet,” Watsons Philippines invited guests who talked about how reducing your carbon footprint is a way of doing good for the planet. “Watsons recognizes its customers to choose more sustainable products and a greener lifestyle. We are continuing this sustainability journey and we are making it personal by talking about how we can reduce our own individual carbon footprint,” said Watsons Public Relations and Sustainability Director Viki Encarnacion. Carbon footprint refers to the total amount of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide and methane, generated by our actions. It is our total impact on the planet and how it contributes to global warming. Among the activities that increase our carbon footprint are travel, energy consumption, eating, and shopping habits.

For “Do Good for the Planet,” Watsons invited Jack Warren of ClimatePartner, social and mindful entrepreneur Rizza Lana Sebastian and Cat Trivino of Communities for Organized Resource Allocation to help media guests understand what carbon footprint is and why we should always be mindful. ClimatePartner is a global solutions partner that works with corporate and individual customers to calculate and reduce carbon emissions and offset unabated emissions. “To address the issue of climate change, we should not emit more carbon dioxide than what we can offset, a state that’s called carbon neutrality. You can reduce your carbon emissions by eating more greens instead of meat, smart use of electricity, walk, bike or carpool and fly economy instead of business or first class,“ said Warren. Sebastian and Trivino gave media guests tips on how to reduce our impact on the environment. They both talked about the different ways in which we could go green, like choosing locally produced food and

products, bringing your own bag when shopping, and buying energy-efficient products such as appliances with inverter technology. During the Watsons event, media guests were encouraged to calculate their carbon footprint by logging on to ClimatePartner’s website, and they were able to see the sources of their carbon dioxide emissions. “This discussion is a reminder that we can all help to minimize our carbon footprint and contribute to the efforts to make our planet cleaner, healthier and safer,” said Encarnacion. The Watsons sustainability program encourages customers to do good for the planet by choosing products with better ingredients, going for product refills whenever possible, opting for clean beauty products, and picking products that come in better packaging so they can be reused. Watsons has over 1,200 Sustainable Choices products in its 900+ stores nationwide and online channel

Lifestyle icon Stephanie Zubiri hosts a special event for Brittany Corporation’s Portofino homeowners

Tablescaping as a personal escape An art therapy where the dining table is your canvass

“W

ORK with what you have,” lifestyle personality, book author, and Tatler Homes editor-in-chief Stephanie Zubiri began her list of tips and tricks with this practical advice at an exclusive event organized for the homeowners of Portofino, Brittany Corporation’s luxury residential development in Alabang. In the miniworkshop, Zubiri offered a new perspective on elevating home dining experiences while presenting a live tutorial.

‘dolce vita’ (sweet life) living, like slow living and savoring the food without shortcuts. It’s not about how something looks but the energy it projects.” Nothing illustrates the energy aspect better than Zubiri’s personal example. While carefully placing pieces of cutlery on the table, she shared how she turns to a top music streaming platform to help her set the mood while arranging a tablescape. In a singsong tone, she gleefully said, “I like to find a playlist in theme. So, if I was doing an Italian dinner, I will put on vintage Italian music, listen to the songs, and feel like I’m in Italy. It adds to the whole vibe of the space.” “During the pandemic, our Portofino home has become our restaurant. Tablescaping has become my moment of joy, a form of relaxation, and an outlet for creativity,” shared Myrna Constantino, a homeowner who joined the tablescaping event. This perfectly matched how Zubiri raved about the convenience of setting things up with today’s technology. “The past few years, we haven’t been able to travel so this [tablescaping] was one of my favorite ways to travel – through food and decorating,” Zubiri said. She laughingly name-dropped popular courier services and thanked them for giving her easy access to tablescaping elements. “I could pretend that one day I was in Italy, one day I was in France, just by the food I ate, wine I drank, and tables I set.” As things remain uncertain globally, tablescaping is the closest one can get to traveling without leaving the table. For your random thoughts, e-mail the author at randomrepublika@gmail.com.

“Table setting is something we do all the time. Fork, knife, plate - that’s it. It’s very utilitarian,” Zubiri began her talk by differentiating table setting from tablescaping. “With tablescape, we think of a landscape. There are different heights, we’re creating a mood, an ambiance. After all, we feast first with our eyes.” With the use of themed or patterned plates, flowers and plants, one can create different moods for dining. Literally, the term tablescape means “an arrangement of tableware and other beautiful objects on a table.” With the art of tablescaping, the dining table becomes an instant canvas for artistic expression. It becomes a means to stimulate emotions and virtually transport people to different locations. “Ultimately, it’s not about creating a Disneyland of where you are. It’s the ambiance and lifestyle,” Zubiri explained the concept as she set up two different tablescapes emitting different vibes, one that is laidback and another with the party feels. “What makes Italy ‘Italy’ is the Zubiri is a picture of passion and expertise
