Presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos renewed his pitch for unity – a message which analysts said has resonated well with most Filipinos, thus propping up his voters preference ranking in all pre-election polls. “We are now on the last day of the campaign period for the elections on Monday. I would like to thank all of you for believing in us,” Marcos said in his miting de avance held in Paranaque City. “Your support for UniTeam is not mere support for a candidate. It is a support for unity, a support for a better Philippines…So come Monday, I hope you think of the future of our country, and hope that you will choose us in UniTeam because we are pushing for unity,” he added. In Makati City, supporters of Vice President Leni Robredo on Saturday also made a final show of force ahead of Monday’s national elections. “Tonight, we can all proudly say: I am here. I am part of this. I am making a stand,” said Robredo, the lone woman in the presidential race. CONTINUED ON 3A

Commissioner George Garcia, who headed the destruction of the defective ballots, said these were the ones that had smudges, wrong color, or wrong size, or were improperly cut, among other defects. The ballots were fed to the industrial cutting machines and will be disposed of after the May 9 elections. The Comelec said the total number of ballots destroyed reached 933,311, including 346,323 roadshow ballots. Meanwhile, the Philippine National CONTINUED ON 3A

Isko winds up presidential bid in his birthplace n By REY E. REQUEJO PRESIDENTIAL candidate and Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso and the rest of the Aksyon Demokratiko slate ended on Saturday their 90-day campaign with a miting de avance at the Moriones Linear Park in Tondo, Manila, marked by a symbolic show of gratitude and celebration of life, hope, and courage. Moreno stressed that the choice of venue his way of showing gratitude to neighbors, friends and residents in the area where he started his journey as a public servant. “I am indebted to the people of Tondo wherever I am in the world of public service. That's where I started, that's where I'll end the fight. I started there (as a councilor) and I’ll end (my presidential campaign) there,” Moreno said, in an earlier interview. Moreno said holding their miting de avance in Tondo holds a deeper meaning, for it is also a celebration of his life’s journey, of hope for a better future, and of courage to overcome life’s adversities. Moreno was born to a poor family in the slums of Tondo, Manila. His father Joaquin Domagoso, who came from Antique province was a stevedore, while his mother, Rosario Moreno who came from Maasin town in Leyte province, washed clothes for neighbors and relatives to help earn a living. At age 10, he found alternative sources of income to help his family by scavenging for old newspapers and used bottles, and later on drove a pedicab and rummaged through restaurant garbage bins for “pagpag” (leftover food), which his mother would recook for dinner.

A LEGISLATOR on Saturday warned that e-sabong which had been stopped by President Duterte early this week could return if the people let their guard down. Senatorial aspirant and Taguig City Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano said e-sabong operators were only letting things “cool down” before trying to make a comeback either through the Senate which has 11 more session days after the May 9 elections, or through the next administration. Cayetano urged religious groups to continue preaching against online gambling and its ill effects, saying such activities will not prosper if no one patronizes them. “That is my appeal to the all faithbased groups... to teach that online gambling is evil and never patronize it,” he said. AS EXPECTED, the Bicolanos vigorously rallied behind the presidential bid of Vice President Leni Robredo who hails from the region. Local organizers said some 40,000 people assembled for a grand rally on Friday along Magsaysay street in Sorsogon City. Robredo later proceeded to Legazpi City in Albay where she was welcomed by an estimated crowd of over 100,000. Later in the day in her home city of Naga, rally organizers said over 306,000 individuals flocked to Magsaysay Avenue and its adjacent streets for Robredo’s “miting de avance.” “Nagpapasalamat po ako na kahit mahirap ang laban na ito, andiyan kayo sa tabi ko, kasama ko kayo sa laban. Kaya maraming salamat sa inyo. Marami tayong pinagdaanang hamon,” Robredo said. “Kilala ninyo ako, alam ninyo kung anong klaseng pamamahala ang aking isinusulong. Alam ninyo kung anong klase pulitika ang aking pinaniniwalaan. Pag nagsabi akong ayoko sa korapsyon, alam ninyong ni minsan hindi nadawit ang pangalan ko sa anumang anomalya,” she added. Robredo said she was not anxious because she knew she gave it all. She also urged her supporters not to be anxious and just keep the faith. “Magtiwala lang, magtiwala lang kasi hindi lang ako ang nagsipag, sila din. Hindi lang naman ako ang ginawa ang lahat pero sila din (Keep the faith, keep the faith because I was not the only one who worked hard, they also did. I was not the only one who did everything, they also did),” Robredo said in an interview, following the grand rally in Sorsogon City. “Hindi ako kinakabahan, kasi ginawa ko naman ang lahat, ako na yata ang pinakamasipag (I am not anxious, because I did everything, I think I am the most diligent),” she added.

Cayetano revealed that e-sabong franchises were “offered” to him when he was still Speaker and that he was warned he would be removed from his position if he refused to cooperate. Cayetano said he sometimes felt like he was “a voice in the wilderness” because he “kept talking about e-sabong even when some people were telling me to stop kasi may nagagalit na daw.” But he said President Duterte’s decision to scrap e-sabong solidified his position that it was harmful to the people and to the nation. “What the government earns from these online gambling operations pales in comparison to the losses the people incur in terms of gambling debt, crimes, the breakup of families, and much more,” he said. ONE nation, one people again. This was the last campaign message of independent presidential candidate Senator Panfilo Lacson to the Filipino people as the campaign period for the May 9, 2022 elections ended Saturday. Lacson hopes that the bitterness and animosity during the entire campaign period will come to an end as well. “Dear God. Thank You for keeping us all safe from illness and injury as we finish the race to submit ourselves to the will of the people. May the bitterness and animosity be buried with the memories of the most grueling 90 days of our lives and be one nation, one people again,” he said. Over the past 90 days, Lacson and running mate Senate President Vicente Sotto III, along with the senatorial bets, visited several provinces, including remote areas, and held town hall meetings where they listened to the plight of residents and offered on-the-spot solutions whenever possible, all the while discussing thoroughly their program of governance once elected. But the campaign period was also challenging for Lacson physically and mentally, as he had to deal with trolls from the camps of other candidates - as well as adjust his campaign after officials of his former party, Partido Reporma, decided to support a rival candidate. Lacson capped his presidential campaign Friday night with a miting de avance in his home province of Cavite, followed by a caravan in parts of Southern Luzon Saturday. He called for a silent revolution where Filipinos can secure a better future for the next generation by using their pens to shade the names of deserving candidates on their ballots on May 9.

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte, who less than two months left before he vacates Malacañang, has two pieces of advice for his successor – support the military and the police to effectively deal with communist insurgents and continue the fight against corruption. The uniformed personnel, he said, are aware that they run the risk of being accused of violating human rights. But for as long as they do their duties, the police and the military should enjoy the full support of the commander-in-chief. “When you go out and hunt them down, that is your duty as a law enforcement officer or a military – fighting the rebels. Don’t be afraid when there is a case,” he said.
Duterte said the next chief executive has the Anti-Terrorism Law in the continuing fight against communist rebellion. He likewise advised the next President to just “stick with the rules” and continue the fight against corruption. “For the president who will succeed me in a matter of days, the president just sticks [to the rules]. There are rules everywhere to be followed. Just follow the rule,” he said. Duterte will end his six-year-term with high approval and trust ratings – a “rarity in Philippine presidential politics” according to PUBLiCUS Asia. In PUBLiCUS’ March 30 to April 6 survey, Duterte logged approval and trust scores of 67.2 percent and 61.2 percent, respectively.

US sending Ukraine more weapons
U
S PRESIDENT Joe Biden announced another package of military assistance for Ukraine, as dozens of civilians were evacuated from Mariupol’s besieged steelworks, the last pocket of resistance against Russian troops in the port city.
Worth $150 million, the latest security assistance would include artillery munitions and radars, Biden said, as the country braces for fresh bombardment by Moscow’s forces ahead of May 9, the day Russia cele-
brates the Soviet victory over the Nazis in World War II. A senior US official said the aid included counter-artillery radars used for detecting the source of enemy fire as well as electronic jamming equipment. Friday’s new batch brings the total value of US weapons sent to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began to $3.8 billion. The president urged Congress to further approve a huge $33 billion package, including $20 billion in military aid, “to strengthen Ukraine on the battlefield and at the negotiating table.” The Pentagon, meanwhile, denied reports it helped Ukrainian forces sink the Russian warship Moskva in the Black Sea last month. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the US had “no prior knowledge” of the plan to strike the ship, which sank leaving a still-unclear number of Russian sailors dead or missing. While providing Ukraine with mili-
tary aid, the United States has sought to limit knowledge of the full extent of its assistance to avoid provoking Russia into a broader conflict beyond Ukraine. Biden, other G7 leaders, and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky are to meet virtually on Sunday to discuss Western support for Kyiv. On Friday Zelensky said “diplomatic options” were also under way to rescue Ukrainian soldiers from the Mariupol steelworks, as civilian evacuations continued. The Russian defense ministry said 50 people were evacuated from the site, including 11 children. It added they were handed over to the UN and Red Cross, which are assisting in the operation, and that the “humanitarian operation” would continue on Saturday. About 200 civilians, including children, are estimated to still be trapped in the Soviet-era tunnels and bunkers beneath the sprawling Azovstal factory,
along with a group of Ukrainian soldiers making their last stand. Russia announced a daytime ceasefire at the plant for three days starting Thursday but the Ukrainian army said Russian “assault operations” had continued by ground and by air. Ukraine’s Azov battalion, leading the defence at Azovstal, said one Ukrainian fighter had been killed and six wounded when Russian forces opened fire during an attempt to evacuate people by car. Azov battalion leader Andriy Biletsky wrote on Telegram that the situation at the plant was critical. “The shelling does not stop. Every minute of waiting is costing the lives of civilians, soldiers, and the wounded.” Ten weeks into a war that has killed thousands, destroyed cities and uprooted more than 13 million people, defeating the resistance at Azovstal and taking full control of strategically located Mariupol would be a major win for Moscow. North Korea fires submarine-launched ballistic missile after US nuclear warning NORTH Korea fired a submarinelaunched ballistic missile Saturday, Seoul said, its second missile launch in three days after the United States warned Pyongyang could be preparing for a nuclear test. North Korea has dramatically ramped up its sanctions-busting missile launches this year, conducting 15 weapons tests including firing an intercontinental ballistic missile at full range for the first time since 2017. The Saturday launch comes two days before South Korea swears in a new, hawkish President Yoon Suk-yeol. Satellite imagery indicates North Korea may be preparing to resume nuclear testing, and the US State Department on Friday warned a nuke test could come “as early as this month.” “Our military detected around 14:07 (0507 GMT) that a short-range ballistic missile presumed to be an SLBM fired

Manny Pacquiao, for his part, held his second and final miting de avance in his hometown in General Santos after the first one Friday evening in Cebu, which is home to his PROMDI party. He said he is ready to accept whatever the result may be on Monday. “I am a boxer. I am used to fights like this. [I will respect] whatever is the decision of the people,” Pacquiao said. In Tondo at the Moriones Linear Park, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso culminated his 90-day campaign with his miting de avance that was described as both a show of gratitude and a celebration of life, hope and courage. “I am indebted to the people of Tondo. Sinpo is a major naval shipyard in North Korea and satellite photographs have in the past shown submarines at the facility. Japan’s coast guard, citing information from its defence ministry, said North Korea had launched an object “likely to be a ballistic missile” and warned its vessels to be aware. Last week, while overseeing a huge military parade, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed to develop his nuclear forces “at the fastest possible speed” and warned of possible “pre-emptive” strikes. Marcos and his running mate, Sara Duterte-Carpio, have dominated all major pre-election surveys, maintaining a comfortable lead over their opponents. In the final pre-election survey conducted by PUBLiCUS Asia, Marcos was ahead with 54 percent and Duterte-Carpio with 59 percent. In the last OCTA and Pulse Asia surveys, Marcos also kept his wide lead at 58 percent and 56 percent, respectively.

Task Force Kontra Bigay in ensuring a fraud-free election,” DILG Secretary Eduardo Año said. “Evidence-based complaints will be acted upon and verified by the PNP Anti-Vote Buying Teams and will go through the same process of gathering evidence. These will be forwarded to the Comelec which has a motu proprio power, or on its own accord, file cases of violation of election laws,” he added. The Comelec on Saturday said it is investigating at least 10 cases of alleged vote-buying. The cases are among the “numerous reports and complaints of vote-buying” received by the Comelec via its official email address and Facebook page. Comelec said Task Force Kontra Bigay, headed by Commissioner Aimee Ferolino, will conduct a probe into the alleged vote-buying and vote-selling incidents. Citizens may file complaints of alleged vote-buying and vote-selling with the Office of the Election Officer and the Department of Justice through the National Prosecution Service. They may also seek assistance from the PNP, IBP, Lente, and Task Force Kontra Bigay in the preparation and filing of complaints. Vote-buying, according to Section 261 of the Election Code, happens when a person “gives, offers or promises money or anything of value” in order to induce anyone to vote for or
against any candidate. Vote-buying is an election offense, which carries a penalty of one-to six years imprisonment as well as the removal of one’s right to vote and be voted. In 2013, the Comelec disqualified two local candidates – one in Roxas, Isabela and another in Norzagaray, Bulacan – for vote buying.

no serious threats have been monitored in connection with the upcoming polls. “We haven’t monitored any serious threat,” said PNP officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Danao said the PNP will use the “full force of the law” against those who will attempt to sabotage the polls. “The whole PNP is ready to secure the electoral process for the national and local elections,” he said. Comelec earlier announced that a two-day liquor ban will be implemented across the country on the eve of May 8, (Sunday) until May 9. Danao appealed to the public for discipline and strict compliance to avoid possible commotion or heated altercations during those crucial days. “We just want to maintain our peace and order in every community. Let us exercise the freedom of expression and right to suffrage in a calm and sacred manner,” Danao said.
Havana hotel blast death toll now at 22 A POWERFUL explosion due to a suspected gas leak ripped through a luxury hotel in central Havana, killing at least 22 people Friday, according to official tallies. Rescuers pulled four bodies out of the rubble in the early evening as they combed through what remained of the prestigious Saratoga Hotel looking for survivors. At least one woman with whom rescuers made contact was alive in the debris, officials said, adding they believed more survivors were still trapped and that a canine squad was searching them out. Cuba’s president attributed the massive blast to a gas leak. “It was neither a bomb nor an attack, it was an unfortunate accident,” said Miguel Diaz-Canel, who arrived at the scene an hour after the blast, accompanied by the prime minister and National Assembly president. “Compatriots and friends around the world. #Havana is in shock today,” he tweeted. The latest death toll of 22, which includes at least one child, was announced on television news after a day in which ambulances and paramedics raced through the center of Cuba’s historic capital. Lawyers: Repeal emergency state SRI Lanka’s influential lawyers’ body Saturday urged the president to repeal a state of emergency, which was imposed after a general strike brought the already bankrupt country to a halt. Months of blackouts and acute shortages of food, fuel and medicines have caused widespread suffering across the South Asian island nation, which is enduring its worst-ever economic downturn. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa declared a fresh state of emergency on Friday after weeks of protests demanding his government step down over its mismanagement of the crisis. The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) said it was “gravely concerned” about the move, which gave sweeping detention powers to the military and allowed the president to make laws without parliamentary approval. Warhol Monroe portrait set to smash records AN ANDY Warhol portrait of Marilyn Monroe worth an estimated $200 million headlines this month’s spring sales in New York that collectors say are among the most anticipated ever. Christie’s expects Warhol’s 1964 “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” to become the priciest 20th century artwork when the auction house puts it under the hammer on Monday. Not to be outdone, competitor Sotheby’s is offering $1 billion of modern and contemporary art including the second helping of the famed Macklowe Collection, during its marquee week in May. “The excitement is certainly unprecedented,” Joan Robledo-Palop, a collector and CEO of Zeit Contemporary Art in New York City, told AFP, about the buzz surrounding this season’s auctions. The 40 inch (100 centimeter) by 40 inch silk-screen Warhol is part of a series of portraits the pop artist made of Monroe following her death from a drug overdose in August 1962. They became known as the “Shot” series after a visitor to Warhol’s “Factory” studio in Manhattan fired a gun at them, piercing the portraits which were later repaired. AFP
VOTERS...She said the DOH has mobilized its regional offices to extend assistance to local governments and ensure minimum public health and safety protocols would be followed. Apart from vaccination sites, the DOH head...will also establish health stations in polling precincts where voters can proceed in case of a health emergency or should they exhibit COVID-19 symptoms. "We conducted a simulation exercise together with Comelec officials last Thursday, so everything is in order. We are closely coordinating with Comelec for our health protocols," Vergeire said. Based on the latest DOH data, an average of 184 COVID-19 cases are recorded daily, while cases in the National Capital Region are at 74 per day. Vergeire said there are areas where cases are increasing but the figures only range "less than 35 cases at the most" and do not translate to increased admissions in hospitals. "We had long been preparing for this election. We have been in close coordination with the Comelec, the DILG and other concerned offices so that the government can guarantee that elections this year will be safe," she said.

New agri-tourism site opens in Laguna
By Roy Tomandao LILIW, Laguna—The Department of Tourism Region VI-A named Silent Integrated Farm in Barangay Dagatan, Liliw, Laguna as the first agri-tourism farm site in the area. Rossel Miras and Isagani Moneda of the Municipal Tourism Office of Liliw Laguna said in an interview Silent Integrated Farm met all the requirements set by the DOT. The income-generating farm has raised awareness of the townsfolk on the potential of the agri-tourism industry. “Silent Integrated Farm is the very first to get the accreditation of the DOT. It has proven it played a very essential role especially at the time of the pandemic,” said Miras. Silent Integrated Farm has helped the local economy of Liliw by creating jobs for the people at a crucial time. It employs 70 individuals who have heartwarming stories to tell on how the farm has helped uplift their lives. One of them shared how she is able to sustain support for her father who is undergoing dialysis twice a week, while a senior citizen said it helps her support her husband who is a stroke
patient. Silent Integrated Farm employs senior citizens and persons with disabilities. “This new farming system approach is indeed a very good program for the community, and we would like to congratulate the men and women behind Silent Integrated Farm,” said Liliw Mayor Ericson Sulibit.
The farm has been open to the public for five months now. It aims to be a sustainable and innovative farm tourism destination, serving as a learning center that produces good and healthy food, value adding crops and cruelty-free animals where everyone can enjoy a happy farming community.

J Dumanhug, a 26-year-old ethical hacker and cybersecurity expert who co-founded Secuna, makes a living out of cracking the IT systems of companies, organizations and government agencies with the purpose of making them more secure and protected. His interest in IT began a decade ago, while playing online games. “From there, it grew the desire to understand the best way to use technology,” he says in an interview via email. Dumanhug decided to become an ethical hacker after learning that companies are willing to provide cash rewards to people who responsibly disclose a security flaw they find in the company’s product. “Ethical hackers can counter cybercriminal attacks, and risks from these web threat attempts can be mitigated by doing deep dives into how these digital terrorists think, plan and operate. Given these cybercriminals’ considerable skills and the support from their own network, their attacks can be countered by an equally knowledgeable and skilled community—but this time, one that is on the side of the digital angels,” he says. In 2017, he helped establish a company composed of trusted international cybersecurity professionals called white hat hackers or simply ethical hackers to identify potential security flaws. “Having a large network of ethical hackers is a huge advantage for Secuna in helping companies, organizations and even the government secure their digital assets. As hackers, they are also privy to cybercriminals’ ways, mindsets and methods, enabling them to stay one step ahead,” says Dumanhug. IT degrees Dumanhug, who obtained Bachelor of Science Information Technology degree from STI College, studied short courses at the University of the Philippines and took Professional Science Master in Cybersecurity at Holy Angel University, is now the chief executive at Secuna—a Philippines-based cybersecurity firm that offers penetration testing services. “Secuna is my first professional job, but I also worked as a full-time consultant for almost three years for the University of the Philippines System under UP Information Technology Development Center. I am a cybersecurity mentor for startups through Ideaspace Philippines, a highly technical consultant for the National Privacy Commission and a part-time Infosec Training Instructor at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde SPaCE,” he says via email. Bug bounties He actively participates in bug bounties by legally hacking companies who offer cash rewards for finding and reporting valid bug reports. In 2019, he and other hackers were invited to a private live hacking tournament hosted by Facebook and Google in Singapore. They placed 7th after discovering and reporting multiple bugs on Facebook and providing the best-written report. Recently, Dumanhug and hackstreetboys recently placed third out of 650 teams in the DEFCON Red Team Village CTF competition. Dumanhug also holds many titles and certifications such as certified ethical hacker, certified security analyst, offensive security certified
professional, certified red team professional, offensive security web expert, certified red team expert, practical network penetration tester, eLearnSecurity certified digital forensics professional, eLearnSecurity certified threat hunting professional and eLearnSecurity certified incident responder. Cybersecurity platform Secuna is the first and only cybersecurity testing platform in the Philippines that helps startups and SMEs by connecting them to the most advanced and highly-vetted cybersecurity professionals in the world to simulate cyber-attacks and find security flaws that real-world malicious hackers can exploit and leverage to gain access to IT systems. Secuna is the combination of SEC, short for “security”, and una, a Filipino word which means “first”. It is the first and only crowdsourced cybersecurity testing platform in the Philippines that has a community of thousands of the world’s most advanced and highly-vetted cybersecurity professionals and ethical hackers. The company offers managed service that helps in setting-up ISO-compliant security vulnerability disclosure program and bug bounty program to receive and act on vulnerabilities discovered by cybersecurity professionals. Secuna also offers compliance service, a comprehensive, modern and ISO-compliant vulnerability assessment and penetration testing. This service is tailored-fit for apps/websites that have never been tested for cybersecurity flaws or for businesses with requirements of third-party assessment reports from government agencies. Dumanhug was recently appointed CEO of Secuna and replaced Iannis Hanen, former CEO of Friendster, who was appointed as vice president for global sales of Secuna. World-class talents With the leadership of Dumanhug, Secuna will continue to pursue in providing world-class, effective, scalable and cost-effective cybersecurity solutions that are not just within reach of multinational companies but also of startups and SMEs. He will also be responsible for driving business growth and overseeing all operations across the Philippines and the Asia Pacific markets. On what makes ethical hackers better than the rest, Dumanhug says they are not only trained to spot vulnerabilities but are also there to prevent online crimes. Ethical hackers understand the breakdown of a data breach, where the common vulnerabilities are and how to potentially resolve these before they become a problem, which helps reduce a company’s risk of being breached, he says. “We are on a mission to strengthen the world’s capability to build secure and better cyberspace. The company has been striving to be at the forefront of cybersecurity in the Philippines. Since our inception in 2017, it has been committed to helping companies, organizations and even the government secure their digital assets,” he says.
Some of Secuna’s notable clients are Dashlabs, QuadX, UBx, Kumu, Paymongo and Palawan Express, among others. Dumanhug is optimistic about the growth of cybersecurity sector in the country. “The Philippines is still at the infancy stage in terms of cybersecurity,” he says. He cites the need for further collaboration between private sector and the government as there are not enough people in the government who perform cybersecurity tasks. “There are security professionals out there willing to lend a hand to help secure their government from various cyber threats and attacks,” he says. Young CEO Dumanhug is tasked to drive the growth of Secuna globally. “I am delighted to be the CEO of Secuna at a critical time when companies need to embrace cybersecurity at the core level of their businesses. As a co-founder, I’ve had the privilege of seeing firsthand how Secuna’s innovation is responding to organizations’ cybersecurity needs with its unique penetration test approach tapping the best ethical hackers across the globe. As demand to protect corporate and essential data escalates amid an evolving threat landscape, Secuna is the best penetration test platform to address these challenges,” he says. “Under my leadership, Secuna will continue to pursue world-class, effective, scalable and cost-effective cybersecurity solutions that are not just within reach of multinational companies but of startups and SMEs. Dumanhug says Secuna is now developing a business model with government agencies that is similar to “Hack the Pentagon” and “Hack the Air Force” cybersecurity programs in the United States, where ethical hackers identify security holes in an entity’s computer systems. Among the sectors that highly require cybersecurity services is the healthcare industry because of the type of data they collect and process. “Millions of health records are compromised every year because cybercriminals can sell protected/ personal health information on the dark web for hundreds of US dollars per data,” he says. Advice to young people Dumanhug advises young people to only consider “hacking” as a means to protect, not to commit crimes. “Hacking teaches young people to be resourceful, they will learn how to conduct research and how to be creative. However, it could also lead them to some legal troubles if they are not aware about cybersecurity-related laws. So my advice is to understand the consequences of hacking,” he says. He says students should consider a career in cybersecurity. “There’s a huge scarcity in cybersecurity for professionals. A lot of companies need at least 1 cybersecurity professional to help them secure their products online. There are also a lot of fields in cybersecurity,” he says. “Cybersecurity is not just about hacking. Cybersecurity is a responsibility, not just a list of regulations and compliances to check off in order to claim that they are secure and compliant. Corporate sector and government should prioritize cybersecurity– not only after they have been breached or have a security issue,” he says. Roderick T. dela Cruz

Manila Chooks 3x3 squad settles for 4th in Mongolia MANILA Chooks’ magical run in the 2022 Ulaanbaatar FIBA 3x3 Super Quest ended at the hands of old foe Zaisan MMC Energy, absorbing a 16-21 (5:01) defeat in the semifinals on Saturday at UB Arena in Mongolia. Already familiar with each other as both teams faced off in the pool stages of the 2022 Chooks-to-Go FIBA 3x3 Asia Pacific Super Quest last May 1, the two squads figured in a nip-and-tuck affair in the early part of the contest. Midway through the semifinals tilt of this level 8-FIBA 3x3 tournament though, Ikhbayar Chuluunbaatar caught fire, draining back-to-back deuces to give the home team a 19-15 edge with 5:13 remaining. Henry Iloka tried to stop the Manila bleeding but Gan-Erdene Gantsolmon drained a deuce with 4:59 left to punch their ticket to the 2022 Chooks-to-Go FIBA 3x3 Manila Masters which is slated to take place from May 28-29. Gantsolmon, Mongolia’s no. 3-ranked player, dropped 12 points in the contest built on five deuces. Chuluunbaatar added seven markers. Dennis Santos was the top scorer for Manila with six points while Chico Lan-
ete chipped in four. Also qualifying for the Manila Masters is Ulaanbaatar as it defeated Zavkhan in the other bracket, 22-17. Manila finished in fourth place in the tournament while Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3x3’s other team Cebu ended up in sixth place. Cebu Chooks lost to Zavkhan in the quarterfinals, 20-17. The two Philippine teams will train with Serbia’s top 3x3 teams starting on May 16 in Manila. Earlier in the day, Chico Lanete scored a clutch deuce to lift Manila Chooks to a 21-20 (8:22) victory over Japan’s Yokohama Beefman in the quarterfinals. Figuring in a nip-and-tuck affair that saw both teams exchange leads at a furious pace, it was the 42-year-old Lanete who stepped up. Down 20-19 with 1:38 left, Lanete knocked down a cold-blooded deuce to seal Manila’s place in this Level 8-FIBA 3x3 tournament that has two tickets to the 2022 Chooks-to-Go FIBA 3x3 World Tour Manila Masters at stake. Lanete ended up with six points on two deuces.
Chico Lanete led Manila Chooks in advancing to the quarterfinals.
THE University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons guard Ricci Rivero dedicated every basket he made to the jeepney drivers, who ply the UP-Ikot route in Diliman, Quezon City.
Ricci Rivero of the University of the Philippines Maroons converted baskets into cash to raise funds for the drivers of UP-Ikot route.
The plight UP Ikot Drivers Association drivers, who were affected by the lockdown brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, were on his mind when he made the two winning charities that allowed the Fighting Maroons to upset the defending champion Ateneo Blue Eagles, 84-83, last Sunday in the 84th University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s basketball tournament. And it is also their situation that continues to inspire the 23-year-old Rivero going into their Final Four showdown with the La Salle Green Archers. “That wasn’t really all me, it was really God. I was praying na kung ano man magiging decision namin sa kung ano mangyayari might be dun sa timeout or dun sa during the game, Gamitin niya lang kami as instruments for that, so it was God it wasn’t me,” said Rivero before their encounter with the Green Archers. Rivero’s project is known as Ricci Rivero’s Buckets of Hope. Money raised has reached P139,800 and it will benefit the jeepney drivers, whose livelihood was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The UP Ikot route has been shut down since 2020 by UP-Diliman campus authorities because of the pandemic and after several areas around the campus were converted to quarantine facilities. With P600 earned for every shot in the 14 games he made, Rivero finished the elimination round with 183 points for an average of 13.07 points. Rivero, according to friends, pledged P250 for every point scored, and so did his handlers at Virtual Playground. UP College of Human Kinetics Dean Francis Diaz vowed to add P50 more while businesswomen Debbie Tolentino added another P50. Then, there’s P30,000 from Sagittarian Food Industries in Santiago, Isabela. An inspired Rivero said this has motivated him to work on his consistency in every game he plays for the Maroons. “We really have to be consistent the whole game diba, so we can’t really lose yung consistency naming. If ever man na mawala siya for awhile kailangan, kailangan mabawi namin siya,” Rivero added.
ture opportunities for student-athletes desiring to make it a career for good. Represented by sports project head and coach Ana Dulce Yango, Commission on Higher Education in partnership with CCE, for its part, has started venturing into the booming discipline with the launch of Friendship Games on May 20 featuring Esports as one its events. It will then pave the way for the bigger National Tertiary Games already in the works which include Esports as well. But the biggest vision is for the country’s national sporting cause especially with Esports rising as one of official medal events in the international scene. “We have experienced and saw (the Esports rise) during the pandemic and even in the Southeast Asian Games. We envision the students, not just athletes but for regular students, to be involved in such opportunities,” said Peter Cayco, athletic director of Arellano.
Lone PH diver makes SEA Games debut FILIPINO-AMERICAN Ariana Drake takes a plunge on Sunday at the start of the diving events of aquatics in the Hanoi 31st Southeast Asian Games at the My Dinh Aquatics Center in Vietnam. The 17-year-old Drake is based in Los Angeles, California, and according to Philippine Swimming Inc. President Lailani Velasco, she will be competing in the women’s 1-meter springboard starting at 9 a.m. Her other event is to die in two days in the 3-meter springboard. “Ariana Drake is a young, up-andcoming diver. It’s her first SEA Games and we hope she can adjust seamlessly. Of course, our goal is to land on the podium, but we also want to manage our expectations. It’s hard to win a medal with only one diver. Too bad we don’t have divers for synchro events.” Velasco said.

Galaxy Racer, as the leading and largest Esports, gaming, and lifestyle organization in the world, shares the pleasure and honor to join hands with CCE for the Filipino sports community. “CCE has opened an opportunity that everybody has been waiting for. Everyone is looking forward to it, especially our collegiate athletes in a league among established collegiate institutions. This is very exciting not just for us but for the entire Esports community. It’s an easy opener for us to partner with CCE,” said Galaxy Racer country manager Marcia Guillermo. Letran, Mapua seek all-Intramuros finale LETRAN and Mapua seek to forge an all-Intramuros finale showdown as they take on lower-ranked Final Four foes Sunday in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre. The unbeaten Knights go up against fourth-ranked University of Perpetual Help System Dalta at 12 noon. The No. 2 Cardinals hope to make it to the biggest stage in their 3 p.m. duel with third-ranked San Beda. Holding twice-to-beat advantages, victories by Letran and Mapua will force a best-of-three Finals series for the Intramuros rivals for the first time since 1990. The title round will start on May 15. While the Knights are eyeing a second consecutive Finals appearance, the Cardinals seek to barge to the league’s biggest stage since 1991, when Benny Cheng scored the championship-clinching shot. Coach Bonnie Tan was surprised by the way Letran pulled off a nine-game sweep in the short elims. “Yung expectation to defend the crown nandoon but yung winning all the games sa elimination, hindi namin na-expect. We are blessed na ibinigay sa amin ang panalo,” said Tan. The top defensive team in the elims, the Knights are not taking the Altas lightly. “We always challenge the team to limit the scoring ng mga teams na nakakalaban namin. Lahat, we treat
every game as a championship game, from the lower-ranked hanggang sa itaas,” said Tan. Coach Randy Alcantara was still amazed by the way Mapua finished the elims at 7-2. One of those victories was a 68-54 romp of the Red Lions that gave the Cardinals the No. 2 ranking. “Hindi pa rin kami makapaniwala. Hindi pa rin kami sanay. Wish ko lang talaga maging healthy mga players,” said Alcantara. While Mapua is expected to be in full strength, San Beda hopes that its leading scorer James Kwekuteye, who injured his ankle in last week’s 63-57 play-in win over College of Saint Benilde. With the hunger factor setting in, the Cardinals are determined to go deeper in the season. “Meron silang gustong mapatunayan. Meron silang gustong ma-improve. Unti-unti nakukuha every day sa practice. Sa start ng bubble, pinaghirapan nila iyon at sila naman ang nag-perform para nakaabot kami dito,” said Alcantara. “Kaya thankful at mga boys natin na sumunod at ginawa sa gusto naming mangyari,” he added. With their pride at stake, the Lions are trying to avoid missing the Finals for the first time since 2005. If Perpetual and San Beda prevail, the semi-finals decider will be played on Wednesday.

Young Filipino fashion designer lone PH representative in Hong Kong competition AN UPCYCLED collection of discarded textiles and secondhand bedsheets of 21-year-old style innovator Darius Jireh Juson is the country’s representative in Hong Kong’s Redress Design Award Competition, the world’s largest sustainable fashion design contest. Spearheaded by Redress Asia, a non-government organization and environmental charity that promotes sustainability in the fashion industry, the competition was launched together with the government’s Create Hong Kong (CreateHK), an agency that champions the promotion and development of the creative industries in Hong Kong. With the goal to transform the global fashion industry, the event opens the eyes of emerging designers on the circular fashion system and its sustainable design theories and techniques. It likewise serves as a platform and rewards promising fashion game-changers to maximize the long-term impact of their design innovations. As the lone Filipino semi-finalist, Juson raised the flag of Philippine artistry and craftsmanship among a roster of fellow designers from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mainland China, Hong Kong, India, Italy, New Zealand, Nigeria, Portugal, Spain, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Fashion Design and Merchandising student Darius Jireh Juson

Sri Lanka, U.S.A, United Kingdom, and Vietnam. The budding artist from Davao City finished a Basic Fashion Design Course at the Fashion Institute of Design and Arts Davao. He is currently honing his creative talent under the Fashion Design and Merchandising (FDM) Program of the De la Salle-College of Saint Benilde in Manila. Entitled Bedroom Fairytale: Act 1, Juson’s Redress Design Award entry is a 10-piece womenswear line that narrates the life cycle of a garment. Conceptualized and created with versatility, functionality and sustainability in mind, the collection utilized discarded textiles and secondhand bed sheets, sourced from his home and thrift shops, as well as quilted
cotton commonly found in placemats and aprons. His inspirations come from childhood memories and his fascination with transformative costumes in theatrical shows and animated feature films. “I can recall how I used to drape bed sheets around me and how I turn them into different looks with just safety pins and belts,” he beamed. “Bedroom Fairytale: Act 1 shows the cyclical process of how we can extend the lives of fabrics: From a bedsheet, revived into a garment, then back as a textile for kitchen or dining use,” he explained. The series is also Juson’s contribution to reduce waste and lessen the use of raw materials. He even opted for natural dyeing techniques to decrease the overall environmental impact of the production. “I want my audience to see beyond the glamour and sophistication that fashion can offer. I want them
to value the things they already have – there’s always beauty in it,” he expressed. “I think it’s time to be responsive to the current environmental issues,” he added. “Now that we’ve seen the alluring side of fashion, I encourage them to join the slow fashion movement by renting, swapping, or wearing their clothes longer or by buying secondhand, pre-loved, or vintage pieces. Let’s be conscious of creating an impact on the environment.” “It is reinventing the idea of clothing – its life does not end after being sold, rather, there is a new journey of what it can be on the hands of the end-user,” Juson explained. Simple gestures to show how much you love mom

Mothers tirelessly nurture their families for years
By Patricia Taculao
I
T’S the second Sunday of May, and it’s the one day of the year when we train the spotlight on our mothers for their efforts, sacrifices, and unconditional love. Throughout the year, we see how our mothers work hard to provide for our needs or nurture us to become better individuals in the future. As a way of thanks, we usually celebrate Mother’s Day by gifting our mothers with heartfelt gifts or taking them on memorable trips. But showing gratitude and affection doesn’t always come from grand gestures. At times, it’s the simple things that truly express how we feel towards a person. Here are some simple yet heartfelt gestures to show how much we appreciate mom: 1. Cook her favorite meal It sounds cliche because we often see this in movies or series, but Filipinos often bond over a delicious meal, and some people also use food as a medium of expression. Learn how to cook your mother’s favorite meal and serve it to her during mealtime. You can even add a twist to
the dish to elevate its flavors and give mom a different experience of enjoying her favorite dish. The effort of cooking itself already demonstrates the time, effort, and preparation put into cooking the dish, making it all the more special and heartfelt. 2. Relieve some of their mental load Mothers often think about the welfare of their families, causing them to carry a heavier mental load and feel more tired than usual. Give her a break this Mother’s Day by taking her mind off of things that usually bother her. For instance, you can take charge of the usual household chores to allow her time for relaxation or to engage in her favorite hobby. If that’s not enough, treat her to a spa day. You can choose to take her
Prepare your mother’s favorite meal, or any meal you think she’ll like, to show your gratitude for her efforts
out to a spa for treatments, or you can do it yourself at home using skincare products, aromatherapy oils, and other relaxing products. 3. Spend time with her Our mother’s special day won’t be as special if we don’t spend quality time with her. If she prefers a quiet afternoon outdoors, go to a public park and have a picnic under the summer sun while munching on snacks or catching up on life. Meanwhile, if your mother prefers an adventurous getaway, choose waterparks, mountain trails, and similar venues to match her interests. However, if your mother is more of a homebody, make things fun by watching her favorite movies at home or organizing a game where all members of the family can participate. Being a mother is a full-time, yearround job with little to no breaks. Yet our mothers make it seem so easy. They even find the time to play around with us and teach us meaningful life lessons. The second Sunday of May isn’t enough to show or reciprocate the love and effort our mothers poured onto us. So if given a chance, make your mother feel special often, as if it’s Mother’s Day everyday.

Yet, aside from stunning features and overall charm, there’s more to Celeste (pronounced “Che-leste”) than what meets the eye. Let’s start with the obvious. The newly crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2022 is half Filipina and half Italian. Celeste was born in Pasay City but raised in Italy. And the Miss Universe Philippines title wasn’t her first bout (and win) in the world of pageantry. Back in 2018, Celeste vied for and won the title of Miss Earth 2018. In her previous Instagram post, where she dons the crown and sash for the past competition, she thanked her mother for introducing her to Filipino roots, which she ignored before and felt sorry for doing so. “Almost two months ago, I arrived for the first time here in the Philippines alone, and I discovered a wonderful country and countrymen,” she wrote. Her early experiences in the country led her to her current advocacy of championing indigenous people and their land rights.

POP singer-songwriter Jamie Miller is proud to unveil his debut EP, Broken Memories, available now via Atlantic Records/Geaux Uptown Records at all DSPs and streaming services. Broken Memories sees Jamie affirming his talent for transforming heartache into songs with a profoundly uplifting power. The EP is further celebrated by the anthemic single, “It Is What It Is,” produced by Louis Schoorl (5 Seconds of Summer) and Cal Shapiro (Timeflies), and co-written by Miller, Schoorl, and Shapiro. The guitar-driven anthem is joined by an official music video. ‘“It Is What It Is’ is what I tell myself anytime something doesn’t go my way,” Miller says. “It means that whatever happens, you can get through it and move on. It was important to me to include that song on the EP and let my fans know that even when things are dark, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel.”
She won the Miss Earth Philippines title in 2018
In an exclusive interview with The Qrown Philippines, she mentioned that being a halfFilipina inspires her to discover more about the She The newly crowned Miss Filipinos. Universe Philippines 2022 dreams of traveling to different parts of Celeste Cortesi the Philippines and immersing in the local culture. “I also want to teach people and help them be more aware of the small groups here in the Philippines that are sometimes not heard or seen enough by the community,” she said. Celeste is currently working as a model, but she’s also pursuing her real estate license in the meantime. Some would think that it’s the other side of her career that she wants to achieve, yet Celeste is also using the knowledge and experiences she gains to support her advocacy of fighting for indigenous people’s land rights.
Jamie Miller opens heart in ‘Broken Memories’ The six-song Broken Memories includes the Wales-born, Los Angeles-based artist’s breakthrough hit, “Here’s Your Perfect,” along with such radiant new tracks as “Last Call“ and “I Lost Myself In Loving You.” Currently boasting over 380 million global streams and over 93 million video views via YouTube thus far, “Here’s Your Perfect” proved a monumental triumph following its April 2021 release, spending 13 weeks on Billboard’s “Global Ex-US” chart amidst acclaim from major outlets like Rolling Stone on the strength of Miller’s fearlessly confessional songwriting and warm yet commanding vocal work. Now with well over 21 million global streams, “I Lost Myself In Loving You” is joined by an official music video currently approaching seven million individual views via YouTube. These tracks and more have helped Jamie earn over 480 million global streams, 2.5 million TikTok followers, and 220 million YouTube views. MARKUS Paterson, Kyle Echarri, and Moophs have just dropped an R&B collaboration entitled “Hotel Room,” a single about feeling lost, empty, and downcast. Coupling Markus’ and Kyle’s soulful vocals with a neo-soul vibe from Moophs on production, “Hotel Room” perfectly encapsulates the gloom of coping with being left behind by a loved one. “I wrote ‘Hotel Room’ about a specific time in my life when I was trapped by vices and surrounded by the wrong crowd. Looking back on it, I’m proud of myself for getting out of that hole, and out of it came a pretty alright sounding song,” Markus disclosed. “I think it’s the best time to release this song because I’m a responsible father now, and it’s a reminder of who I was, not who I am now.”
The newly crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2022 is also a beach lover. She filled her Instagram feed with pictures of her posing on picturesque beaches across the country and highlighting their natural beauty. Some of these photos include her partner, Mathew Custodio, a football player who plays for the Philippines’ national team. Speaking of natural beauty, Celeste also uses her body to express herself. She flaunts a collection of tattoos across her body, including her wrist, bikini area, forearm, and chest, that all describe her personality. Her biggest one is a palm tree located on her thigh. Another fun fact about Celeste is that she’s a proud mom to two fur babies, a French bulldog named Dolce and a cat named Chanel. Lastly, she manifested her win in the Miss Universe Philippines 2022 pageant by whispering to the La Mer en Majesté crown about her dreams of becoming Miss Universe. Celeste’s quirks and personality make it hard for anyone to ignore her, a good trait to have as the next Miss Universe Philippines. She will go on to compete for the Miss Universe title in December 2022 in San José, Costa Rica.
A story that inspired Elha Nympha to write ‘Babalik’ The cover for Elha Nympha’s single ‘Babalik’ IT’S TIME for Elha Nympha to show off her new sound with an original composition, “Babalik.” She produced the song with the help of Tiny Corpuz, Pray, and Schumi, and recorded her instrumental work and vocals at MFORE Studio. Elha says that the song is inspired by a real-life incident she knew about. “It’s about a toxic relationship [where] the girl was blinded by love, no matter how toxic the guy is,” she says. She argues that this is a relatable experience for women. “Some of us ended up staying in [a] relationship because [we] love the guy or truly in love with [him],” she says, “so maybe [some of us] are listening while they’re in a tough situation or at the verge of breaking up.” What’s unique about “Babalik” is that this is one of Elha’s first original compositions, meant to
highlight her new R&B sound. She says that it took months and months to develop a final version because lots of ideas tend to pop up in the process. And while writing the song, she listened to other female R&B performers like SZA, Doja Cat, and fellow Filipina singer H.E.R., partly to see how she could shape her own sound. So what does this first effort at writing and producing her own music mean for Elha? She wants to do more of it, she says. Indeed, we are seeing a very exciting time ahead for Elha Nympha, a promising R&B talent who is out to make her mark. Elha became a household name after winning the second season of The Voice Kids in 2015. As a recording star under MCA Music Inc., she has released her self-titled s t u d i o album,
Kyle echoed Markus’ sentiment about the song being personal to him and said he wants to share it because of its relatability. He said, “It’s my first time releasing something that is this personal, and I feel like a lot of people go through these kinds of hard times.” Meanwhile, song producer Moophs talked about how working with the two actor-singers was a breeze. The Tarsier Records label head said, “Markus wrote a song and sent me a voice note, I produced a beat around it, and Kyle penned a second verse and hopped on the track. Their

The young diva has appeared on several international music programs, including Steve Harvey’s Little Big Shots where she performed Sia’s “Chandelier” and the French counterpart of the top-rating franchise. Embracing a new musical direction that showcases both her signature range and a newfound love for a more current R&B and soul/pop sound, Elha is set to enter a new music era that documents her headturning transition from a vocal powerhouse to an allaround young performer. At present, she’s one of the performers of the longest-running Sunday variety show, ASAP Natin To.

A healthy birthday cake
for a senior dog By Desiree Carlos
S
UMMER is a very special time of the year for us all, and specially this summer of 2022. Our shih tzu child, Summer, turned 17 years old last April 28. We thought we would lose her last January when she lost a lot of pounds, making her rather weak to stand longer without help from us. This, after being diagnosed with pancreatitis in November, 2021. She can no longer be given her favorite food of boiled meat and dried treats. She is allowed to eat only the gastrointestinal low fat food in cans and a little renal food in cans. Kaya pumayat siya. (That is why she became thin.) After another round of complete blood test and comprehensive blood test for the kidneys and liver profiles, she was allowed to eat sweet potato, potato, pumpkin, sayote, spinach and malunggay leaves. However, we were instructed to introduce these food little by little so as not to cause upset stomach.
First step is to boil the pumpkin and sweet potatoes.
Mash the pumpkin and sweet potatoes.
Since it is her 17th birthday, a milestone, an achievement (!), her doctor Ingredients: allowed her to eat a little boiled chickPumpkin en breast. To make it easier for her to Sweet potatoes eat the food, we decided to have it Ground chicken breast without the skin ground by the meat shop staff. Mash the pumpkin and sweet pothing different to your pooch, even if tatoes, then mix the two vegetables. he or she is not sick or a senior doggo. J Put aside.
Strain the ground chicken breast and add to the mashed vegetables.
Put the carrots and asparagus on top of the "cake" for more nutrition and added color. Then add your other decor.
3. Boil the chicken breast. Strain. Put aside the meat part. Keep the chicken broth for use in other pet dishes later. 4. Grate the carrots. 5. Cut the asparagus stalks into small pieces but leave about a half inch of the upper part of the spear so you can use it as cake décor later. 6. Heat some water. When the water is boiling, drop the asparagus, wait around two (2) minutes or blanche the asparagus, then get the asparagus so it will not get overcooked.
7. Mix the carrots and small pieces of asparagus. 8. Mix the chicken in the mashed pumpkin and sweet potatoes 9. Get a nice plate, put the mixture, and form it into a round cake shape. (See photo) 10. Put the carrot-asparagus mixture on top of the “cake” to serve as “icing.” 11. Put the spears of asparagus on top. 12. Put candles or other cake décor on top.
Uses of Apple Cider Vinegar for Pets YES, owners can give apple cider to their pets. It is safe for pets with no kidney problems. Diluted in food or water, a teaspoon or two is not harmful for normal-sized dogs. It should be less for cats, said Dr. Cailin Heinze, veterinarian and assistant professor of nutrition at Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in “Can Pets Have Apple Cider Vinegar?” By Vanessa Voltolina in PetMD. A cat or dog with a kidney problem can not process acid. The acidity of the apple cider vinegar can be harmful to the pet, Heinze said. “In fact, in a situation such as this, the food recommended to these pets is more alkaline in nature, and is an important conversation to have with a trusted veterinarian to determine what your animal should and shouldn’t have as a result of this diagnosis,” Heinze said. For healthy pets, take a cue from them. If they do not like food or treats or water with apple cider vinegar, do not force it on them. If your pet develops upset stomach, do not give it to your pet. Never give apple cider vinegar undiluted. “However, keep in mind the fact that the vinegar is an acid that can burn the delicate mucus membranes of the digestive tract. While we can eat it as part of our favorite salad dressings, ‘I don’t believe there is anything to support it [for improved health in pets],’” said Heinze. “It can often have a laxative effect, or cause stomach upset, so I usually discourage the use of apple cider vinegar,” Heinze added.
After a bath, you can pat till dry some of the 50/50 mixture of ACV and water to protect your dog specially during the tick and flea season which is summer time. In photo is senior dog Silver who we try to protect from chemical-based or –laden preventives to prevent damage to some organs, thus we use ACV-water mixture for rinsing.
Always ask the vet if you have questions about your pet’s diet.
Important benefits
Apple cider has other uses that are very important for dogs, said Brent Chittenden in “ Top Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar for Dogs in Dogs Naturally But first, look for raw, organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar (ACV). “Organic ACV will allow you to avoid pesticides … and other toxic chemicals used in commercial farming,” Chittenden said. Shake the bottle before using it.
For Dog Skin Allergies
ACV can help dogs with itchy skin and rashes caused by yeast and poison ivy. Make a mixture of 50 per cent ACV and 50 per cent water, then apply it directly on the itchy spots. However, do not apply on open wounds as the ACV will sting. You can feed ACV to your dog by mixing in the food or water if yeast is your main concern, said Chittenden. “In The Veterinarians’ Guide to Natural Remedies for Dogs, Dr Donna Starita Mehan DVM explains that yeast doesn’t do well in an acid environment. So feeding 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of ACV twice daily can help,” she said.
For Fleas On Dogs
ACV can help protect your dog from fleas. Spray your dog with a 50/50 solution of ACV and water. “And for some added oomph, put ACV in your dog’s food or water during flea and tick season. Add up to 1 Tbsp for a 50
We also put at least two caps of ACV in the pot of boiled vegetables daily to keep ticks and fleas away from the dogs. We do not put too much to prevent any adverse reaction to the acidity. In photo is Macky who gets an ACV/water mixture.
lb dog. You may want to start with less, in case your dog doesn’t like the taste. The acidity will help make your dog less appealing to ticks and fleas,” Chittenden said.
Apple Cider Vinegar Tea Body Rinse
There is an alternative to the 50/50 ACV and water mixture. Chittenden said: “you may want to try an apple cider vinegar tea body rinse. This body rinse can be useful to restore skin pH, soothe itchy skin, calm rashes and welts. It has some added benefits for keeping biting flies, fleas and gnats at bay as well.” Ingredients to mix together in a glass bottle or jar with a cap are (shake well before use): ½ cup apple cider vinegar ½ cup brewed green tea (cooled) 1 cup distilled water After bathing your dog, Chittenden said you can apply this room temperature rinse to your dog’s coat and skin, then massage it in. Rinse well and pat dry. “Or you can let the apple cider vinegar mix air dry for the added benefit of bug relief. You can also pre-make this blended mixture and store the glass jar in the refrigerator. But allow it to warm to room temperature before use. It’ll be good for 1 or 2 weeks. If you spot any mold on it, throw it away,” he said.
Other Apple Cider Vinegar Benefits For Dogs
1. Blood Sugar Control ACV can help regulate blood sugar levels in your dog. “Studies show that taking apple cider vinegar for 8 to 12 weeks can reduce blood sugar levels. This could help prevent diabetes .. or in an already diabetic dog, could mean she needs less insulin,” Chittenden said. 2.Cardiovascular Health ACV can make your dog’s heart more healthy, Chittenden said. “The acetic acid in ACV can help reduce high lipid levels and high blood pressure,” he said. 3.Antimicrobial “There is evidence that ACV has antimicrobial properties. In particular, ACV can help restrict the growth of toxic bacteria like E. coli, S. aureus (staph infection) and yeast like C. albicans (candida). This means you can use it to help manage infections in your dog … including urinary tract infections,” Chittenden said. 4. Urinary Tract Infections Chittenden said there are some evidence ACV can help with urinary tract infections (UTIs). “Research is still ongoing … but there are some indications that ACV may be able to reduce the inflammation that causes UTIs,” he said. 5. Cognitive Disorders It can also keep your dog’s mind sharp.
When you bring your dog to the park, pet restos and malls, and you have not put any antitick and flea preventive, you can spray your dog with a 50/50 solution of ACV and water to keep ticks and fleas away from your dog. In photos are (from left) Lucas, Summer and Shakti enjoying a walk inside a mall.
Chittenden said: “Recent studies show that foods that contain phenolic compounds can help lower Alzheimer’s risk in humans. So they could help protect your dog from Canine Cognitive Disorder (CCD). ACV contains a number of these phenolic compounds including: Gallic acid Catechin Caffeic acid Epicatechin Chlorogenic acid P-coumaric acid” 6. Obesity It can help reduce oxidative stresses which come with obesity. “Oxidative stress occurs when free radicals (unstable, damaged molecules) begin to harm the cells in your dog’s body. Oxidation is a normal process in the body, but if free radicals become unbalanced, the damage can contribute to numerous health issues … including complications from obesity,” Chittenden said. “One study noted that feeding male rats a daily dose of ACV reduced the oxidative stressors. This lowered the risk of obesity related diseases,” he added.
7.Gut Health Gut health is important to a dog’s overall health because nearly 90 per cent of your dog’s immune system is in her gut. “Probiotics are good bacteria that support your dog’s gut health. And prebiotics feed those good bacteria to help them work better,” Chittenden said. “The fermentation process used for raw ACV makes it a useful prebiotic. ACV’s prebiotic properties support the good bacteria in the gut, helping with digestion and keeping the gut nice and healthy,” he added.
Recommended amount of ACV
Mixed in water or food, give the following daily amount depending on the size of your dog: 1 tsp for dogs up to 15 lbs 2 tsp for dogs 16 to 35 lbs 1 tbsp for dogs 36 to 84 lbs Reminder from Chittenden: “When you use apple cider vinegar internally or topically, remember to monitor your dog for any adverse reactions. Dogs who are sensitive to ACV may vomit or get itchy skin.” Desiree Carlos
