Survey projects BBM victory by huge 27-m vote margin
I
n By REY E. REQUEJO
F RECENT political surveys are to be taken as indication of the outcome of the May 9 elections, Partido Federal ng Pilipinas standard-bearer Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. would come out as a runaway winner, leaving the other presidential bets biting the dust by more than 27 million votes. This was based on Pulso ng Pilipinas, a compilation and summation of all Kalye Survey results produced by information and statistical data provider Splat Communications, working jointly with consulting firm Simplified Strategic Solutions (SSS). Allowing for a voter turnout of 82 percent of the total 67-million registered voters, or 54.94-million voters, Marcos will get 33,128,820 votes. Leni Robredo, a very far second, will get 5,637,638 votes.
This figure indicates a lead of 27,491,182 votes for Marcos. Manila Mayor Isko Moreno will take the third place, with 4,603,972 votes, while Manny Pacquiao and Panfilo Lacson will garner 3,483,196 and 1,395,476 votes, respectively. Splat Communications stressed that they decided to do an estimation to give a clear picture of the statistical data obtained.
Based on the January 1 to 31 results, Marcos got a total of 8,170 or 60.30 percent; Robredo got 1,323 or 9.77 percent. Moreno got 1,135 or 8.38 percent; Pacquiao, 859 or 6.34 percent; and Lacson, 344 or 2.54 percent. There were 113,548 respondents for the said period, 12.67 percent of which were undecided. “With a little over three months left before the elections, please be observant and extra-vigilant. Expect all the worst imaginable drama, intrigues, downright lies, smear campaigns, and threats against the frontrunner BBM,” Splat said. “All of his opponents will become desperate as Election Day draws near. Now the disparity is as clear as day. This lead is insurmountable at this stage,” Splat added in the voice-over. In the 2016 presidential elections, Rodrigo Duterte, with 15,970,018 votes, pulled away by 6,269,636 votes from Manuel Roxas, garnered 9,700,382.
Sorsogon hosts Luzon kickoff of Sara village tour n By MARICEL V. CRUZ LAKAS-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) on Saturday afternoon launched in Sorsogon City the “Sara para sa Barangay” initiative in Luzon, attended by senatorial aspirant and Sorsogon Gov. Chiz Escudero. Escudero introduced Lakas-CMD President and House Majority Leader Martin G. Romualdez of the 1st District of Leyte during the launch of the Luzon leg of the program at the Sorsogon Provincial Gymnasium here. “Delivering basic services to Filipinos in a timely and efficient manner, and leaving no one behind in the process, is the most basic aspiration of the BBM-Sara UniTeam,” Romualdez said on Duterte’s advocacy also designed to solidify the hold of Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) standard-bearer Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in the presidential race under the UniTeam Alliance. “The Sara para sa Barangay embodies this goal. Mayor Duterte in alliance with BBM will make sure that all barangays in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao will get their fair share of development,” Romualdez, one of the two campaign managers of Duterte, added. Duterte was scheduled to arrive in Sorsogon late Saturday afternoon from Allen, Northern Samar for the 5th day of her nationwide Mahalin Natin ang Pilipinas Ride (MNPR). Escudero and Romualdez were joined by Lakas-CMD Catanduanes provincial chairman Rep. Hector Sanchez and Lakas-CMD Vice President and Zamboanga City Rep. Manuel Jose “Mannix” Dalipe during the event attended by at least 500 community and sectoral officials.

Ping vows to honor valid ‘BBB’ deals as president PARTIDO Reporma chairman and standard-bearer Panfilo “Ping” Lacson expressed his commitment to honor valid and ongoing infrastructure projects under the “Build, Build, Build” (BBB) program as well as subject potential land reclamation sites to careful and science-based evaluation. He also said that under a Lacson presidency, transparency in the bureaucracy will be upheld while the culture of “palakasan” will come to an end. (PR) The longtime public servant also said the National ID system can play a key role in thwarting cybercrime.
Meanwhile, Partido Reporma spokesman and treasurer Arnel Ty said Filipinos must never entrust six years of leadership to presidential wannabes, who keep making excuses for declining invitations to appear at public forums so they would not be assessed on their platforms and qualifications, because it makes them totally unfit for the position they are seeking. “Yes. If the contracts have already been perfected, it is incumbent upon us to implement them. It’s already there and this is intended for development,” Lacson said when asked if he would continue pending big-tick-
et projects of the outgoing administration should he win the 2022 elections as the next president. These include the Mindanao Railway project and the construction of bridges that will connect the Island Garden City of Samal to Davao City as well as the islands of Iloilo, Guimaras, Negros Occidental and Cebu in Visayas. “Kung naka-perfect na ‘yung kontrata diyan sa Mindanao, ‘yung railway [at] lahat ng kontrata, meron tayo diyan, [‘yung] tinatawag na inviolability ng kontrata, hindi pwedeng i-violate ‘yan,” the Partido Reporma presidential candidate noted.

PRESIDENTIAL candidate and Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso vowed to create more economic hubs in the countryside to spur economic growth and progress and speed up the country’s recovery from the devastating impact of the two-year COVID-19 pandemic. Moreno stressed this during his presentation of his ‘Bilis Kilos’ 10-point economic agenda at the “Panata sa Bayan” Presidential Candidates Forum sponsored by the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP). This will be pursued through the combination of the current administration’s massive infrastructure “Build, Build, Build” (BBB) program and the equally successful “Public Private Partnership” (PPP) of the Aquino administration, the Manila mayor said. “BBB will continue but with PPP being revived, especially in the light of expect-
ed higher loan interest rates and higher foreign debt, which is now at 63 percent of our GDP (gross domestic product). A peso spent in Metro Manila will have much less economic multiplier effect than the same peso spent in the countryside,” the 47-yearold presidential aspirant said. To create more economic hubs, Moreno said he will pursue the following “doable and time-bound” targets to support improved physical connectivity through LuzViMinda (Luzon-Visayas-Mindanao) trimodal transport systems; Well-integrated kalye, kuryente, tubig at internet; Safe and potable water 100 percent accessible by 2026; Improve access to information and communications technology (ICT). “There must be continued hopes for these dreams of ours to become a reality in a good, prudent and efficient management that we also did in Manila,” the Aksyon Demokratiko

Russian embassy hit by fire; no casualties
THE Russian Embassy in Manila at upscale Dasmariñas Village in Makati City was hit by a fire on Friday night and sustained estimated damage of at least P100 million. No casualties were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry. “On the evening of February 4, a severe fire broke out in the building of the Russian Embassy in Manila. There are no victims or injured. Employees and members of their families who were in the embassy were evacuated,” a statement released after the incident read. The fire reportedly started on the second floor at 8:25 p.m. and reached the second alarm. Solon: Rody to ink law on allowance for HCWs A CONGRESSMAN on Saturday said he expects President Rodrigo Duterte to give the green light on giving COVID-related benefits to the country’s healthcare workers (HCWs), retroactive to July last year, and for them to continue receiving such extra pay for as long as the state of public health emergency stays. Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte also welcomed the ratification by Congress of their respective versions of the measure granting government and private HCWs a monthly risk allowance. The exact amount will range from P3,000 to P9,000, depending on whether these medical frontliners are stationed in low-, mediumor high-risk areas. Villafuerte is one of the authors of the consolidated bill (House Bill 10701) that was passed on third reading by the bigger chamber last January 31. The Senate passed its version (Senate Bill 2421) last Feb. 1. Both chambers then ratified the final version for President Duterte’s approval before they took a break last Friday ahead of the three-month campaign period for the May 9 national elections.

VIENNA—It’s official: From Saturday, Austrians over the age of 18 must be vaccinated against Covid-19 or face the possibility of a heavy fine, an unprecedented measure in the European Union. The new measure, adopted on January 20 by Parliament, was signed into law by President Alexander Van der Bellen on Friday, the culmination of a process that began in November in the face of the rapid spread of the Omicron variant. The government decided to pursue its new tougher approach despite criticism within the country. “No other country in Europe is following us on compulsory vaccines,” said Manuel Krautgartner, who has campaigned against the new approach. In neighbouring Germany, a similar law championed by the new Social Democrat Chancellor Olaf Scholz was debated last month in the Bundestag, or lower house of parliament, but has not made progress yet due to divisions within the political class. Checks from mid-March Despite the threat of such a drastic measure, the vaccination rate in Austria has still failed to take off, languishing below the levels seen in France or Spain. AFP

US nixes sanctions on Iran civilian-use nuke program
W
ASHINGTON -- The US State Department is waiving sanctions on Iran’s civilian nuclear program in a technical step necessary to return to the 2015 nuclear agreement, a senior official said Friday.
The resumption of the waiver, ended by the Donald Trump administration in 2020, “would be essential to ensuring Iran’s swift compliance” if a new deal on controlling Tehran’s nuclear program can be reached in talks in Vienna, the State Department official said.
The waiver allows other countries and companies to participate in Iran’s civilian nuclear program without triggering US sanctions on them, in the name of promoting safety and non-proliferation. The civilian program includes Iran’s increasing stockpiles of en-
riched uranium. “Absent this sanctions waiver, detailed technical discussions with third parties regarding disposition of stockpiles and other activities of nonproliferation value cannot take place,” the official said, insisting on anonymity. The step came as talks to restore the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, which then president Trump unilaterally withdrew from in 2018, were at an advanced stage. Joe Biden moved quickly to return to the agreement after he became president a year ago, but Iran in the meantime has moved increasingly closer to
Deaths from laced cocaine in Argentina climb to 24 THE death toll among dozens of people who consumed cocaine likely laced with opioids in Buenos Aires rose to 24 on Friday, with 23 still in hospital, health officials said. Eight of the hospitalized are in serious condition and on mechanical ventilation. Officials said 24 people, aged between 21 and 58, have died since Tuesday night from adulterated cocaine bought from dealers in the poor neighborhood of Loma Hermosa, some 40 kilometers (25
miles) from the Buenos Aires city center. Most died far from the point of sale, 12 of them at home and two on the road, unable to make it to a hospital on time because of the sudden effects of the tainted drug. Many suffered heart attacks. Twenty-three remained hospitalized Friday, according to a provincial government update. Three of them had been discharged but had to be re-hospitalized after taking more of the cocaine, provincial health
minister Nicolas Kreplak said. More than 200 other people sought medical intervention after consuming the substance, presenting symptoms of varying degrees of gravity. Arrests and seizures Thirteen people rounded up in a police operation to establish the origins of the tainted drug were due to appear before magistrates as part of the ongoing investigation, according to the Telam news agency. Germany’s Scholz to build trust in Washington debut BERLIN—Olaf Scholz makes his Washington debut as German chancellor on Monday, trying to dispel doubts over Berlin’s resolve to stand up to Russia in the standoff over Ukraine. As Scholz seeks to emerge from the long shadow of his veteran predecessor Angela Merkel, the new German leader will meet US President Joe Biden with several points
of friction on the table. While the US under Barack Obama relied heavily on Merkel’s unique rapport with Russian President Vladimir Putin after Moscow’s annexation of Crimea, Scholz has come under fire on both sides of the Atlantic for his vague stance in the current crisis. Biden has taken pains to restore relations with Europe after the mutual recrimi-
nations of the Donald Trump years, but critics say Scholz has made that task more complicated. Berlin’s refusal to consent to shipping arms to Ukraine, its often muddled messaging on potential sanctions and above all its refusal to call off the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project to provide cheap Russian gas to Germany have all vexed Washington. Salvador Panelo, who was Duterte’s spokesman and chief legal counsel at the time, said the Palace would not intrude into the case against the self-proclaimed “Owner of the Universe” and “Appointed Son of God.” A former member of Quiboloy’s sect accused the pastor and five others of raping her in 2014 when she was just 17 years old. The church leader’s camp, however, has denied the accusations. But the FBI said: “Apollo Carreon Quiboloy, the founder of a Philippines-based church, is wanted for his alleged participation in a labor trafficking scheme that brought church members to the United States, via fraudulently obtained visas, and forced the members to solicit donations for a bogus charity, donations that actually were used to finance church operations and the lavish lifestyles of its leaders.” “Furthermore, it is alleged that females were recruited to work as personal assistants, or ‘pastorals,’ for Quiboloy and that victims prepared his meals, cleaned his residences, gave him massages and were required to have sex with Quiboloy in what the pastorals called ‘night duty’.” The FBI said people with information on Quiboloy could contact its local FBI office or the nearest American Embassy or Consulate.

Malacanang had yet to issue a statement as of press time, but Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Saturday said the FBI “knows” where Quiboloy is and knows what to do to “acquire” the controversial religious leader. “I’m sure the FBI knows where Pastor Quiboloy is. I’m also sure that the FBI knows the proper legal procedure to enable the US justice system to acquire jurisdiction over Pastor Quiboloy’s person,” Guevarra said in a text message to reporters. Canada faces more protests on COVID bans
OTTAWA—A week-long occupation of Canada’s capital by truckers opposed to vaccine mandates was set to ramp up Saturday with thousands of demonstrators expected to pile into Ottawa while other cities also braced for protests. Police said they were expecting up to 2,000 protesters as well as 1,000 counter-protesters to join the hundreds already parked in front of parliament, but organizers said tens of thousands were headed to Ottawa. Similar protests are also planned for Toronto, Quebec City and Winnipeg. “This remains... an increasingly volatile and increasingly dangerous demonstration,” Ottawa police Chief Peter Sloly told a news conference Friday. Following thousands of complaints from local residents of threats and harassment by protesters who have made even sleep difficult with incessant honking, and an online petition signed by 40,000 demanding action, Sloly vowed to crack down on what he called an “unlawful” protest. But he did not offer a timeline. AFP

anomaly,” Gordon said in an interview over ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo. Also, he said 11 senators have already committed to sign the committee report. For those who hesitate to sign the report, Gordon said their reluctance -for fear of offending President Duterte – “doesn’t look good.” They should sign the document for it to be discussed when senators come back after the elections, he added. Gordon had refused to identify the senators who are reluctant to sign the report. On Tuesday, Gordon released the draft partial committee report on the investigation into the transfer of P42-billion funds from the Department of Health (DOH) to the Department of Budget and Management-Procurement Service (PS-DBM). The panel’s draft report said President Duterte has betrayed the public trust with his actions related to the government’s controversial multi-billion-peso supply contracts with Pharmally. The Senate committee also recommended plunder, graft, and other criminal and administrative charges against Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, former government officials, and Pharmally executives. Gordon has expressed confidence the draft partial report on the COVID-19 supply procurement investigation released by the blue ribbon committee will get the support of other senators.

A total of 97,336 individuals nationwide were given warnings, while about 10,000 were penalized for violating protocols and restrictions in areas under a granular lockdown. In the National Capital Region, almost 12,000 individuals received warnings, while nearly 3,600 paid fines. The country now has 3,601,471 total confirmed novel coronavirus infections, 136,436 of whom are still battling the disease. An additional death was confirmed due to COVID-19, but this was recorded in May last year. A duplicate, a fatality, was removed from the cumulative total, the DOH said. The agency acknowledged the late reporting and said the circumstance was due to the “late encoding of death information to COVIDKaya.” “This issue is currently being coordinated with the Epidemiology and Surveillance Units to ensure information is up to date,” the DOH said. Total fatalities remained at 54,214; recoveries, meanwhile, increased by 22,539 to 3,410,821. A relatively high number of recuperations may still be recorded in the coming days due to the high number of people who tested positive for COVID-19 in recent weeks. Six laboratories failed to submit on time.

As the Philippine competitive retail electricity market opens up to enable full deregulation of the power market, Exora Technologies offers an end-to-end energy solutions platform that assists contestable consumers to lower energy costs through the use of technology and digitalization. This enables consumer choice and promotes open competition among the stakeholders. “One of the sustainability strategies of Converge ICT was to switch to renewable energy. We have interviewed several retail electricity suppliers but when we worked with Exora last August, we were able to do the switch immediately. Through Exora’s digital procurement, we were able to cut down all of the interviews and presentations to a very streamlined process. It saves us a lot of time, effort and energy and it helps us make business decisions easier,” said Enrique Balangue, Converge ICT facilities and administrative manager. Making the process simple and efficient is Exora Technologies enabling the market to fully exercise choice and flexibility in supply. Sun Life and Joe D’ Mango bring back ‘Lovenotes’
NOSTALGIA is in the air as Sun Life Philippines and Joe D’ Mango bring back “Lovenotes,” the iconic radio program that reigned over the airwaves in the 80s and 90s. Now streaming as a podcast on Spotify, “Lovenotes” will once again inspire listeners, new and long-timers alike, with more stories and pieces of advice to share. Topics will range from relationships to money matters, which they can listen to and learn from. With Sun Life and Joe D’ Mango sharing the same advocacies such as valuing relationships and making a difference in the lives of Filipinos, they aim to help revive people’s passion for pursuing their goals and achieving a brighter future with their loved ones. “After almost three decades of the program on radio and TV, those who grew up listening or watching Lovenotes have remained nostalgic about the show,” says DJ Joe D’ Mango. “I was very happy and excited to see how people responded when I announced that the program, which has been a part of their growing up years, will finally be back as a podcast.” Meanwhile, Sun Life sees the program as an opportunity to bring hope and optimism to listeners, especially as the pandemic has necessitated isolation from friends and family. The inspirational stories, engaging conversations and pieces of advice that mark every episode of Lovenotes can serve as a reminder that having a partner that we can rely on during difficult times can make the journey brighter. Joe D’ Mango’s Lovenotes will be available to listeners worldwide as it streams every Friday on Spotify, and soon syndicated exclusively on the Sun Life Radio podcast channel coming soon on Spotify.

Software giant commits to ‘zero waste’ in PH By Othel V. Campos GERMAN software company SAP is marching onto 2022 with a sustainability platform to help organizations of different sizes in the Philippines move fast, recover faster and pivot fastest from the impact of the pandemic. “The urgency of us coming up with this program was anchored on our desire to help different organizations pivot into the digital platform and transform themselves into intelligent enterprises,” said SAP Philippines managing director Edler Panlilio. “We have put a structure to every transformation we have started with S4 Hanna. Now that we have a structure, it is faster for us to help our customers, move them in different stages of transformation. The good thing about this is that, it aids every company, every organization in whatever transformation they are in today,” said Panlilio. For 2022, SAP will further push the Rise with SAP with a caveat on sustainability, not only as a catchphrase in the digital space, but a program that will help micro, small and medium enterprises compete in a digitalized environment. Given the amount of data around the world that goes through SAP systems, SAP as an enabler is driven by a much bigger responsibility—achieving corporate goals in tandem to achieving the goals of the Sustainable Development Goals as espoused by the United Nations. The goal is personified in the company’s zero waste, zero emissions and zero inequality. “And for us to achieve this, we have to act now. In line with our purpose, SAP’s objective is to create positive economic, environmental and social impact within planetary boundaries, with special focus on climate action, circular economy social responsibility and holistic steering and reporting. In addition to pursuing our own targets, we want to help our customers become more sustainable,” Panlilio said. SAP has a portfolio of sustainability solutions to businesses with embedded operational, experiential and financial data and insights to drive sustainability at scale. “One of the things that we have done is we have paid a great amount of attention to making sure that from a purpose and sustainability point of view, we are engaging with the world both as exemplars of sustainability which means that we embrace sustainability in all of the right forms within our own business practices. But that we also are engaging with our customers as enablers of their sustainability and purpose initiatives. We feel like we have a dual roles to play, and in both of these roles it’s important that we do so with authenticity and credibility,” Panlilio said. SAP’s Chasing Zero initiative helps the company strengthen adherence and commitment to the SDGs. Over the past two and a half years SAP learned from key stakeholders that credible contributions to the SDGs require tangible links between an activity or tool and the intended social, environmental and economic impact, lest everything becomes arbitrary. While the company remained committed to the SDG framework, it understands the importance of focusing on each specific goal that shows a material link between its own operational activities or the use of its software by customers and the impact SAP can have as a company. SAP believes that it can create the biggest and most direct value within the economic layer with the help of its native core competency of improving business process management resulting in a specific focus on UN Global Goals 8, 9, 10 and 12.

APPY days are here again for the sports and fitness enthusiasts as the Covid-19 alert has gone down to a level that allows gyms to operate and contact sports to be played again.
The up-and-down trend in Covid cases has put the sports and fitness industry in topsy-turvy and on-and-off mode. But the more creative ones have managed to continue playing their sports even under the stricter Covid Alert level. Let’s take for instant pickleball. Pickleball is a new kind of paddlesport with most techniques derived from lawn tennis, table tennis, and badminton. Two or more players use solid paddles made from wood, carbon, or graphite that is used to hit a sturdy plastic ball with multiple holes. The scoring is much like the old system in volleyball with a side-out. Pickleball players in the Metro Manila converge every Saturday evening to play on temporary courts laid down along the stretch of Emerald Avenue in Ortigas Center, Pasig City. It was arranged by Michael Ray Johnson, president of the Philippine Pickleball Federation. Some 30 to 40 enthusiasts play the net game whose popularity is growing and is attracting more players from all levels, young and old alike. One of those who never miss the “Saturdate” pickleball games is Leslie Reyes. “Honestly, it’s not that hard to get some playing time with different groups around Metro Manila simply because we all share same love for pickleball. There are more fellow enthusiasts each day and this pandemic gave way to pickleball grow faster,” Reyes said. Playing the game during the pandemic is safe because of social distancing in place. The playing court is so wide, it’s almost impossible for players to get close to each other. While the business industry is opening up, it’s very important for people to boost their immune systems and combat the Covid virus. That’s why Reyes always

Sports vs. Covid-19 There’s no stopping this passionate bunch of pickleball players as they convert a stretch of Emeral Avenue at Ortigas Center into pickleball courts every Saturday night to gather and enjoy the game finds time and the means to play her favorite pastime. “It’s actually a great workout, hence, the amazing health benefits. Playing pickleball is so much fun to me personally because I truly love this sport mainly due to making lots of good friends. To say the least I’d say am not only addicted to it but it’s also turning out to be my passion.” ONLINE TRAINING Some fitness gyms have also opened their doors to their fitness students to 20 percent capacity. “Sana, tuloy-tuloy na ito kasi talagang magtatagal naman ang COVID so basta ingat lang talaga and strict health protocols,” said coach Monith Pabroa of Elements MMA. Vera recalls how he called out ONE ‘Apprentice’ candidate for slacking AS “THE Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition” became available on Netflix worldwide on Feb. 1, former ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera recalled one particular moment wherein his competitive spirit took over. Vera was one of the many legendary fighters and World Champions who joined the 16 candidates in various physical challenges throughout the season. The tasks that test the contestant’s fitness give the show a unique and entertaining twist from the typical business challenges. The 44-year-old fighter spearheaded Team Valor in the Dragon Boat challenge against “Super” Sage Northcutt’s Team Conquest. From that experience, he recalled an incident where he got into one of the candidates for slacking off. “Honestly, [the Dragon Boat] was my favorite challenge. I just had to keep everyone in step, and the team did all the work. That was my first time going on a dragon boat, and it was fun! You could kind of see my competitive side come out a bit,” Vera stated. “I got on somebody for slacking in the race. I really
leaned into him. Then I felt bad afterward, so I said sorry. And then I explained my stance: ‘You don’t get to where I’m at by quitting.’ I just needed to hone that into somebody.” Ultimately, the Filipino-American superstar was left impressed by everyone he worked with in the show,
especially how they quickly adapted from racing dragon boats at sea to pitching ideas in the boardroom. Given the show’s cutthroat competition wherein the candidates are vying for a US$250,000 job offer to be ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong’s “Apprentice,” Vera can only imagine what these men and women endured during the production of the award-winning program. “Honestly, everybody stood out,” the inaugural ONE Heavyweight World Champion said. “To get on that show, I can only imagine the ringer you’d have to go through and the qualifications you need. I was just listening to everyone speak. Everyone was impressive to me.” Catch all 13 episodes of “The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition” on Netflix. ONE Champion also returns to combat sports action with ONE: BAD BLOOD on 11 February. Watch the event live by downloading the ONE Super App or by visiting their official YouTube channel.

Exercise your vocabulary with Wordle
By Patricia Taculao
H
AVE you ever logged on to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, only later to see a bunch of boxes stacked five by six and colored gray, yellow, or green? It’s because a new trending game called Wordle has been challenging netizens across the globe. Wordle is an online daily word game that people can play for free. A new word is available every 24 hours, so if you fail to guess today’s word, you’ll have to wait for tomorrow to get another chance at it. It has been around for months, but people can’t seem to get enough of it. The rules are simple enough. All you have to do is guess the five-letter word of the day in six tries. If you correctly guessed the letter in its place among the five boxes, the box will turn green. But if the correct letter is in the wrong box, it will turn yellow. Guessing wrongly, on the other hand, turns the box grey. You can use these hints to guess the right word in six attempts. It sounds simple enough, but hundreds of thousands got hooked on Wordle. According to The Guardian, more than two million people play it daily. Since there are countless possibilities for what the word of the day is, players have their way of finding the correct letters in the first few tries. For instance, their first word contains two or more vowels to get a better idea of the word of the day. Regardless of whether players have a strategy or tackle the world problem headon, Wordle continues to exercise everyone’s vocabulary by determining just how much we know about the English language. Wordle’s rules are simple and designed to provide users with a quick gaming experience (Photo from The Guardian)
People who love word puzzles will enjoy playing Wordle
Wordle is the brainchild of software engineer Josh Wardle, hence the name. He created the game for his partner, a fan of word games. And to make the game experience more enticing, Wardle promises that his
creation won’t be laden with pesky ads that pop out at random times. Despite the simple gameplay, players from various parts of the world only recognized the game after adding a share feature. And since players are guessing the same word for each day, Twitter user Elizabeth S (@irihapeta) designed a spoiler-free emoji grid that allows players to share their results with others on Twitter or Facebook. However, users can still opt to just share the word with their family and friends, but where’s the fun in that? As Wordle continues to gain popularity among gamers and word puzzle lovers, other developers are trying to replicate it. Some versions are even charging fees to download and play the game.
Remember, Wordle is free-to-play and is limited to browsers, so don’t try finding the game on the AppStore or PlayStore as you might run into a replica instead. The game’s success continues to astound Wardle as it grows to levels beyond his imagination. But with the demand among players and him being only one person, Wardle sold the game to The New York Times by the end of January, making it a part of the media outlet’s subscription puzzle service. Wardle, in the meantime, promises that the game will remain free-to-play and preserve users’ progress. Next time you log on to our social media sites, give Wordle a go and see if you can guess the five-letter word of the day in just six tries.

bares his soul in latest single ‘Pwede Pa Ba?’
OUL balladeer Garrett Bolden is on the right path to stardom with his emotional self-penned single under GMA Music entitled “Pwede Pa Ba?,” which is now available on various digital platforms worldwide. The single immediately climbed to the third spot of iTunes PH when it was released on Jan. 28. “The song is about the cliché feeling whenever you break up with someone or when you fall out of love with someone. There’s that regret and the longing to go back to the relationship but you’re not sure if ‘Pwede pa ba?’ Some relationships could not be saved anymore but you still want to go back to that situation,” he says. “Pwede Pa Ba?” is Garrett’s first attempt to write a Filipino song. With the help of his bandmates, they were able to create the melody and the lyric of the song. “I have

not mastered creating a song in Tagalog yet. When the melody hit me, I asked the help of my two bandmates, and we finished it in a day. I really want to venture into songwriting. I have a lot to learn, and it takes a lot of hard work but I’m really into it. I want to explore and do a lot of things aside from singing but now I want to focus on writing and try to release an international song with GMA Music,” says Garrett. The Clash Season 1 alumnus has been tapped to sing the theme songs of various GMA dramas such as Agimat ng Agila, The World Between Us, and Stories from the Heart: Love on Air. His first self-penned single “Our Love” was specially selected to be the official music of the primetime series I Left My Heart in Sorsogon. “I’m really blessed and honored to sing for I Left My Heart in Sorsogon. Natuwa ako kasi nagkaroon ng recall sa listeners ang kantang naisulat ko. Now with this second song ‘Pwede Na Ba?’, I’m taking another risk and sana maka-relate ulit sila sa awiting ito. My inspiration is not just me but the stories around me and ng mga taong malapit sa akin. It’s very close to my heart,” he shares. “Pwede Na Ba?” is available on Spotify, YouTube Music, iTunes, and other digital platforms worldwide.

At first, he is the only one who knows it exists and begins to tinker with it to bring it back to life. Though he didn’t get to physically drive the car, Wolfhard says it was an honor to interact with the iconic machine. “In one sequence, Trevor is in the Ecto-1 ripping through this giant wheat field,” he says. “He loses control and flies off and hits the road.” Ghostbusters: Afterlife, distributed in the Philippines by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International, opening exclusively in Philippine cinemas on Feb. 16.

Your heart’s anthem this love month SOME people associate February with love because of Valentine’s Day but as many would probably agree, romantic relationships entail a handful of sacrifices and complications that make the meaning of love month different for every individual. Here are some songs to check out to accompany you this season whatever state your heart might be in at present: “O Bakit Ba” by Gigi De Lana ft. The Gigi Vibes This pop-rock anthem that serves as the key track of Gigi’s debut album poses a question that stirs painful memories for anyone who has ever felt stuck in a relationship that has no security. This is perfectly depicted in its music video—a prequel to Gigi’s
“Sakalam,” which also stars Markus Paterson as Gigi’s lover. “Did I Let You Go” by Jon Guelas Breakups are hard in itself but what happens after – the what-ifs, urge to get back together, and of course pain – is even harder. This Tarsier Records single by Fil-Brit singer-songwriter Jon encapsulates that inescapable feeling of being lost post-split, and you can bask in all the feels from the stripped-down version of the track in the upcoming second season of He’s Into Her. “Can’t Get Out” by Jem Macatuno A soft pop single written and
composed by Star Pop artist Jem, this song is perfect for those who still find it hard to stop thinking about a romance that could have been. Its music video stars Jem’s fellow “PBB Otso” housemates Ashley del Mundo and Tan Roncal which shows them being each other’s ‘the one that got away’ or TOTGA. “Kung Kita’y Kapiling” by Troy Laureta ft. Jake Zyrus Troy’s version of this timeless love song spectacularly performed by Jake will easily usher goosebumps to listeners, especially for those who currently yearns for the affection of someone they love deeply. Its music video features drag queen Valentina
who shot to fame while competing in RuPaul’s Drag Race. “Halaga” by Maki This chill R&B song is filled with the beautiful words of Tarsier Records artist Maki who aims to remind listeners of their worth. If you’re still in the process of nursing a past heartbreak or working towards selflove, this song is all the reassurance you’ll need that one day, someone will love you the way you’ve always deserved to be loved. “Magpakita Ka Na” by Zephanie Healing is the most important part of entering a new relationship, but once that’s done and you’re ready to let someone in again, the wait-
ing game can be quite brutal. Zephanie’s single from her self-titled debut album under Star Music captures the emotions of someone who is now prepared not only to fall in love but also face the risks of being in a relationship. “Ikaw at Ako (Hanggang Dulo)” by Zion Aguirre Love is both hell and heaven, but if you’re lucky enough to finally be with the right person, this upbeat feel-good track will surely resonate with you on another level. In this Tarsier Records release, Zion makes a case for a love that overcomes hardships and defeats challenges—simply because you’re with ‘the one.’

Pet information: The Shih Tzu
Does your pet hurt itself?
EVERY week, we will post information on different kinds of dogs and cats. This will hopefully help you choose the kind of dog for your personality and lifestyle, understand the kind of dog or cat you want to have before getting one, and thus, help you make an informed choice. This Sunday, we are featuring the shih tzu from the “Shih Tzu Breed Information” by the American Kennel Club.
About the Breed
If a dog has displayed an unusual behavior that can potentially harm him or her, please bring your pet to the vet to check if there is a medical condition that needs to be treated. If the medical condition has been ruled out, it is time to find out any environmental trigger or programming by humans in the household that has cause said behavior. You can ask for help from the vet or a dog/cat behavior expert to determine the psychological cause.

HENEVER you see your pet cat or dog chasing its own tail, we usually say, “That’s funny and cute, do it again!” Then you will force your pet to actually do it again so you can get a picture of your pet doing it. And you will be so proud of your pet that you will post it on social media, saying your pet knows this “trick”. Well, you are in for a surprise because you are, essentially, making your pet’s health problem worse. Did you know that when a pet chases its own tail it is a sign that your pet may be starting to develop a compulsive disorder? Yes, animals may develop such a disorder, too. It is not like the OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) in humans but it is somewhat similar. With dogs, they call this “canine compulsive disorder” or CCD. And when this disorder gets out of hand, they call this “self-mutilation.” It usually starts with unusual behavior or actions that may seem silly or funny at first. If not addressed immediately and properly, it may worsen and the pet may harm himself or destroy anything in the surroundings. Worse, the dog’s action my even lead to is death. Some dogs or cats may start to chase their tail around but they are not necessarily in a mood for playing. Once they catch their tail, sometimes they act as if they are doing it to relieve an itch or something. But then, you will notice that they do this a number of times in a week. Others tend to really bite their tail or other parts of their body. It is not a very deep bite at first but later on, the bite gets deeper and deeper. There have been cases that the pet completely bit off his tail or a portion of his body. Others express this disorder by constant or frequent licking of certain parts of the body until that part no longer has fur, or looks sore as if the pet has developed a rash. Self-mutilation is a serious health problem. What causes this may be medical or psychological. A medical issues must be ruled out if indeed, the cause is psychological. To do this, a complete check-up by the vet should be done first. If there is no medical issue and the unusual behaviour continues, the environment of the pet resides must be reviewed and assessed. The pet maybe in a very stressful situation and it is experiencing an extreme case of anxiety. The pet may have found self-mutilation as its coping mechanism with the said situation. While it is true that certain breeds display particular behaviors, these behaviors do not necessarily cause them to hurt themselves. Thus, it is easy to see the difference if it is just a matter of genetics or if there is a serious problem going on already. And, most of the time, these behaviors start as a coping mechanism to relieve their stress. How do you deal with “self mutilation” if it has come to that point already? An associate professor of veterinary medicine at the Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinarian Meghan Herron, DVM, DACVB says, “It’s a challenge and may require psychotropic medications as well as reduction of triggering events,”. (How to Deal with Your Dog’s Obsessive Compulsive Behavior, Roberta Alexander, July 25, 2017). Herron further states that it helps knowing what triggers the behavior in these pets. But before anything else, ruling out the medical issues must be done first. Dr. Michelle Posage says it is wise to have your vet run the following tests for your pet first: • Physical examination • Skin scraping • Fungal testing • Impression smear • Biopsy of skin samples

What To Expect When Caring For a Shih Tzu
Make sure your dog gets to exercise and play with other dogs to remove the stress. In photo are rescued dogs Rida (foreground), Princess (left, background), and Cassie of Save Animals of Love and Light (Save ALL Inc.). They play every day. • Bacterial culture and sensitivity • Radiographs • Allergy testing • Hypoallergenic (elimination) diet • Urinalysis • Complete blood count • Serum chemistry profile • Behavioral consultation After the medical causes have been ruled out and treated, therapies for the compulsion must be obtained, Posage adds. (Dealing With Canine Self Mutilation, Dr. Michele Posage, August 25, 2015). Pat Miller, CPDT, training editor at Whole Dog Journal provides helpful techniques in reducing compulsive behavior in dogs. She recommends the following: Increase exercise. She says this helps wear the dog out and leaves less energy for compulsive behavior. This includes mental exercise as well as physical. Reduce stress. She advises making a list of all the stressors you can identify that affect your dog, not just those that appear to trigger the unusual behavior. Remove reinforcement. Often, owners mistakenly think these behaviors are cute or funny. “They reinforce the behavior with laughter and attention, and may even trigger the behavior deliberately, unaware of the harm they’re doing,” says Miller. When the behavior becomes so persistent that it’s annoying, the owner may reinforce “negative attention” when they yell at the pet to stop. Reinforce an incompatible behavior. This is an effective part of a behavior modification program. For example, when a puppy wasn’t chasing its tail, its owners could use a high rate of reinforcement for calm behavior, especially for lying quietly on its bed. Other calm behaviors can be reinforced during potentially stimulating moments, such as sitting quietly at the door waiting for its leash rather than leaping about in excitement over the pending walk. Explore behavior modification drugs if/when appropriate. (How to Deal with Your Dog’s Obsessive Compulsive Behavior, Roberta Alexander, July 25, 2017). Now that you know that not all that is cute and funny is harmless, the next time you make your pets chase their tail around, do think twice about it if you truly love them. AKF's Cage Free Campaign
THE FIVE FREEDOMS OF ANIMALS
Understanding the universal standard of animal welfare ANIMAL care and welfare have become of greater concern for the general public. Based on social media activities of the Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF), more and more people are sharing their views, curiosity, and eagerness to understand how animals, pets and farmed animals, should be treated and cared for. In reality, there are different ways of caring and raising animals depending on their breed, types and “usefulness”. But one way of ensuring animals are treated well and positively is to use the Five Freedoms as yardstick for satisfying the needs of the animals. To understand the significance of the Five Freedoms, we can go back to 1964 when Ruth Harrison, a British woman, wrote “Animal Machines.” The book vividly described the way farmed animals were treated at that time that led to an outcry from the British public. This forced the British government then to commission professor Roger Brambell to look into the welfare of farm animals. In 1965, the committee came up with an 85-page “Report of the Technical Committee to Inquire into the Welfare of Animals Kept under Intensive Livestock Husbandry Systems,” which became known
That face! Those big dark eyes looking up at you with that sweet expression! It's no surprise that Shih Tzu owners have been so delighted with this little 'Lion Dog' for a thousand years. Where Shih Tzu go, giggles and mischief follow. Shi Tsu (pronounced in the West 'sheedzoo' or 'sheet-su' ; the Chinese say 'sher-zer' ), weighing between 9 to 16 pounds, and standing between 8 and 11 inches, are surprisingly solid for dogs their size. The coat, which comes in many colors, is worth the time you will put into it'¿few dogs are as beautiful as a wellgroomed Shih Tzu. Being cute is a way of life for this lively charmer. The Shih Tzu is known to be especially affectionate with children. As a small dog bred to spend most of their day inside royal palaces, they make a great pet if you live in an apartment or lack a big backyard. Some dogs live to dig holes and chase cats, but a Shih Tzu's idea of fun is sitting in your lap acting adorable as you try to watch TV.
as “The Brambell Report.” The report, in sum, suggested that animals should have the freedom “to stand up, lie down, turn around, groom themselves and stretch their limbs.” These freedoms became known as “Brambell’s Five Freedoms.” How an animal is coping within its environment – including its physical and mental state—is considered when discussing the welfare of an animal.
The Five Freedoms are as follows:
Freedom from Hunger and Thirst: by making sure the animal has ready access to fresh water and provided a diet to maintain full health and vigor. Freedom from Discomfort: by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease: by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment Freedom to Express Normal Behavior: by providing sufficient space, proper facilities, and company of the animal’s own kind. Freedom from Fear and Distress: by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
When AKF started saving slaughter-bound dogs in 1999 we were highly conscious of the Five Freedoms which led us to build a shelter in 2006 with kennels that have no cages. This understanding of the Five Freedoms provided us an easy path towards the rehabilitation of the gravely traumatized dogs and has made our adoption program a success. We did not only nurse them back to great physical health but we made sure that they were also mentally fit to be welcomed by new loving families. AKF is also campaigning for a cage-free farm system for hens. The impact and use of the Five Freedoms is widespread across the world. This code which enforces common sense in treating all kinds of animals is considered the gold standard in animal welfare. The Five Freedoms encompass both the mental and physical well-being of animals. Every pet owner should know this manual and every farm-animal practitioner must adhere to this code. It is not complicated. It encourages common sense purely in the way that all animals should be treated humanely. Let us educate each other. Help Animal Kingdom Foundation spread animal welfare awareness by discussing The Five Freedoms amongst ourselves. Let us do this together.
Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more. When you take a dog into your life, you need to understand the commitment that dog ownership entails. 1. On Health: Because of their heavy coats and short faces, Shih Tzu do not tolerate heat well and are not good swimmers. Most Shih Tzu are generally healthy, and responsible breeders screen their stock for health conditions such as such as hip dysplasia, patellar luxation (a slipped kneecap), eye anomalies including cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, retinal detachment, and corneal dryness and inflammation from excessive exposure to the air because of improperly closing eyelids. 2. On Grooming: A Shih Tzu with a long coat requires daily brushing. Use a good-quality wire brush with flexible pins, and layer the hair to be sure you reach to the skin. A bath about every three or four weeks will help to keep the coat clean and at its best. Remember to comb the mustache and topknot daily, and gently clean the corner of the eyes with a damp cloth. To protect the Shih Tzu's eyes from being irritated, the hair on the top of the head should be trimmed short or tied up into a topknot. If you don't want to have to spend time on your dog's coat, the Shih Tzu can look adorable when clipped into a "puppy trim" by a professional groomer. Trimming nails and cleaning ears should be part of the Shih Tzu's grooming routine.
Shihtzus love car rides. Here are Batchie (upper left, smiling), Shakti (lower left), and Lucas enjoying a cruise around the subdivision. 3. On Exercise: The Shih Tzu was bred to be a house companion. As such, they require minimal exercise. Short daily walks with their owner and indoor playtime will satisfy the activity needs of this small, short-legged companion. 4. On Training: Training a Shih Tzu can be both an amusing and a frustrating experience. The breed tends to charm his owner into letting him have his own way, which can result in a chubby, less-thancompletely-housebroken pet who is difficult to groom. Because Shih Tzu are such people dogs, training methods based on praise and rewards work best. Harsh corrections should not be used with this breed. Introduce desired new behaviors a bit at a time, be firm, and never give in while the dog is misbehaving. If he nips or jumps up on you, ignore him until he settles down, then praise him. Early socialization and puppy training classes are recommended and help to ensure that the Shih Tzu grows into a well-adjusted, well-mannered companion. When enrolling in a puppy class, be sure that the training methods used in the class are based on positive reinforcement. 5.On Nutrition: The Shih Tzu should do well on a high-quality dog food, whether commercially manufactured or home-prepared with your veterinarian's supervision and approval. Any diet should be appropriate to the dog's age (puppy, adult, or senior). Some dogs are prone to getting overweight, so watch your dog's calorie consumption and weight level. Treats can be an important aid in training, but giving too many can cause obesity. Learn about which human foods are safe for dogs, and which are not. Check with your vet if you have any concerns about your dog's weight or diet. Clean, fresh water should be available at all times.
History
When you own a Shih Tzu, you own a little bit of Chinese history. Imperial breeders in the palace of the Chinese emperor developed the Shih Tzu (meaning “lion dog”) centuries ago from Tibetan breeding stock. The breed is most likely the product of crosses of two even older Sino-Tibetan breeds, the Lhaso Apso and the Pekingese. For hundreds of years, Shih Tzu lived the life of royal lap warmers and were pampered by emperors and their families. It is said emperors would give valuable gifts to breeders of Shih Tzu who produced the most beautiful and affectionate dogs. The breed remained hidden behind palace walls, virtually unknown to the outside world, until the1930s. Breed clubs formed in Peking and later England further refined the breed, not without much debate among fanciers as to proper type. The Shih Tzu entered the AKC Stud Book in 1969. Since then, the Shih Tzu has been one of the most popular toy dogs here and in the United Kingdom. And they still treat their owners, no matter who they might be, like royalty. Owners as diverse as Queen Elizabeth II and Miley Cyrus have succumbed to the Shih Tzu’s exotic charms.”
