NCR daily cases at new low OCTA: Reproduction number at 0.50; Adviser eyes shift to Alert Level 2
T
HE COVID-19 reproduction number in the National Capital Region has gone down to 0.50, the OCTA Research group said on Saturday, as Metro Manila recorded 2,256 new COVID-19 cases on January 28 -- the lowest daily number since last December 31, when cases were starting to surge in the NCR. This was as the Philippines recorded 17,382 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, data from the Department of Health (DOH) showed. OCTA also noted that the one-week growth rate in new COVID-19 cases in NCR was at minus-69%. This prompted Presidential Adviser for Entrepreneurship Joey Concepcion to say that the COVID-19 alert level in Metro Manila could be downgraded to Alert Level 2 as infections in the big city
have decreased. Citing the OCTA report, Concepcion said on Saturday the country had to start reviving its economy. “We don’t want our economy to get COVID and we have to revive the economy. And the only way to do that is to start to realize that COVID-19 is here, and it may stay. We will have a rise in infections, it will go down, but we have to live with that. There’s no other choice,” he said. Concepcion added that OCTA projected that by the first or second week of February, COVID-19 infections in the NCR will decrease. “We are asking for a downgrade to Alert Level 2 in the NCR,” the adviser said. THE upcoming vaccination against COVID-19 for children aged 5 to 11 years old has 168,355 registrants as of Saturday, the Department of Health announced Saturday. Guanzon gives Ferolino Monday deadline ELECTION Commissioner Rowena Guanzon has given fellow commissioner Aimee Ferolino a Monday deadline to come out with the First Division’s resolution on the disqualification cases filed against presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. If Ferolino did not come out with the ponencia (written decision or
majority opinion) of the First Division by January 31, Guanzon threatened to reveal the “influential and powerful” senator who was behind the supposed delay in the release of the resolution. “Binibigyan ko lang sila hanggang Monday. Ilabas ninyo ang resolusyon, hindi ko ilalabas
pangalan. Ilabas niyo lang [I am giving them until Monday. Release the resolution and I will not reveal the name. Just release the resolution],” Guanzon told radio DWIZ when asked about the identity of the senator. Guanzon told Ferolino in a memorandum – a copy of which the former posted on her Twitter account on Saturday -- to submit a written explanation until January 31 (see related story below – Editors). CBCP nixes donations via ‘destructive’ biz
THE Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Saturday said it will not accept donations from politicians, especially those with businesses involved in “destructive industries” such as coal and fossil gas projects, logging, quarrying, and destructive mining.
“Accepting donations from politicians is a touchy subject, and especiallypoliticians in power. [We never know] if those funds come from the government,” CBC Virgilio David said during the 123rd CBCP Plenary Assembly on Saturday. CONTINUED ON 3A

PH gets lion’s share of new EU aid for ‘Odette’, COVID
T
HE European Commission is allocating 21 million euros (about P1.19 billion) to support communities affected by disasters, conflicts, and the pandemic in some Asian nations, including the Philippines – which will get over half of the funding, the European Delegation in Manila announced Saturday.
“Typhoon Rai (Odette) has been a painful reminder that countries in Southeast Asia are experiencing firsthand the dramatic consequences of climate change,” European Union (EU) Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič said in a statement. “This is why the EU is further stepping up its humanitarian support to the most vulnerable affected by natural hazards in the Philippines, Nepal, and the region,” Lenarcic added. “We also support those affected by protracted con-
flict in the Philippines, while further investing into the preparation and response to the coronavirus pandemic,” he said. Of the total funding, 10 million euros (P570 million) in humanitarian assistance will be given to the victims of Odette, which devastated several parts of the country last December. About 1.5 million euros (P85 million), on the other hand, will support communities affected by the protracted conflict in the country, as well as assist in the
government’s response efforts against the coronavirus. The remaining 9.5 million euros (P541 million) will target disaster preparedness and contingency response plans in Nepal and other Southeast Asian nations, including the Philippines. Meanwhile, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority officials led by Chairman Benjamin Abalos Jr. met local leaders in the provinces of Surigao, Surigao Del Norte, and Maasin, Southern Leyte and gave financial assistance to communities devastated by Odette last month. The MMDA officials turned over the financial assistance donated by the Metro Manila Council through MMC Resolution 21-31 (s. 2021). The MMC released the fund from the savings of the MMDA to extend assistance to the affected areas. The Council, composed of the 17 mayors in the National Capital Region, is the governing board and the policy-making body of the MMDA.
Unioil forecasts P0.80 hike in oil, diesel price tags PUMP prices of gasoline and diesel are both expected to increase by P0.70 to P0.80 per liter in the coming week, according to Unioil Petroleum Philippines' forecast announced Saturday. If accurate, Unioil’s fuel price forecast for February 1 to 7 would mark the fifth straight week of petroleum product increases. Latest data from the Department of Energy indicate that year-to-date adjustments stand at a total net increase of P2.60 per liter for gasoline, P3.50 per liter for diesel, and P2.74 per liter for kerosene as of January 11, 2022. This comes on the heels of another price hike -- new suggested retail prices (SRPs) on bread products, as Pinoy Tasty will be priced at P38.50 from P35 per 450-gram loaf, while Pinoy Pandesal will sell for P23.50 from P21.50 per 250-gram pack of 10. The price increases will be spread out from February 1 to 8 to give the Department of Trade and Industry time to publish the suggested retail prices and the supermarkets a chance to adjust their points-of-sale or cash registers, the DTI said on January 27. Last Tuesday, local oil companies also hiked pump prices by as much as P1.90 a liter. The country’s oil firms raised pump prices for the fourth consecutive week by as much as P1.90 per liter of diesel effective 6 a.m. Tuesday. Gasoline went up by P1.45 per liter while kerosene was P1.70 more expensive. Petron Corp., the country’s biggest oil company, said the price increases reflect the movements in the international oil market. Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Chevron Philippines, Cleanfuel, Seaoil Philippines, and PetroGazz also trailed the latest price hike.

Ping: Planned purge to enhance, not disrupt, gov’t n By JOEL E. ZURBANO PRESIDENTIAL aspirant Senator Panfilo Lacson on Saturday said if elected, the state of public services will be enhanced and not disrupted after a massive internal cleansing in the first 100 days of his presidency. “Such a massive internal cleansing will not be indiscriminate. It will be based on evidence against public servants who engage in corruption and other wrongdoing instead of helping their fellow Filipinos,” said Lacson in a radio interview. “This is without sacrificing public service.
This is the objective, to improve public service through internal cleansing, so people will feel the benefits of services rendered by the government,” the Partido Reporma chairman and standard-bearer added. Lacson clarified that the first 100 days is not a self-imposed deadline but a starting point of a sustained cleansing of misfits and corrupt government officials and employees, similar to what he did in the Philippine National Police immediately after he assumed office as its Chief in November 1999. “The cleansing will be evidence-based. If possible, the culprit should be caught in

Also, Lacson made it clear that while he does not care if the bureaucracy may shrink so long as those who will be left are hardworking and honest, “I will welcome honest and competent individuals who wish to join the government.” Lacson said he will pattern his internal cleansing of the bureaucracy after the reforms he instituted at the Philippine National Police when he headed it from 1999 to 2001 that led to the elimination of the kotong cops as well as the kotong culture at all levels of command in the police organization.
ANOTHER pre-election preference survey has confirmed Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) standard-bearer Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr.’s frontrunner position among the presidential hopefuls in the upcoming 2022 elections. The survey, conducted by the Issues and Advocacies Center, made public on Tuesday, showed that 51% of the respondents would vote for Marcos Jr., an 8% increase from the December 2021 edition of the survey. According to The Center’s director Ed Malay, the Pulso ng Pilipino survey was conducted from January 10 to 16, 2022, with 2,400 respondents. The non-commissioned survey covered 16 cities and one municipality in the National Capital Region (NCR) and included respondents from all socio-economic class-
es in the surveyed areas. Meanwhile, the UniTeam of Marcos, Jr. and running mate Davao City Mayor Sarah “Inday” Duterte is committed to provide every Filipino an equal opportunity and a fighting chance in life including those who are living in the streets. Marcos stressed that if given the mandate in the coming May 2022 elections, the UniTeam intends to intensify the government’s program for “homeless people” to give them roof over their heads and keep them off the streets. Based on research undertaken by The Borgen Project in 2020, there are an estimated 4.5 million “homeless Filipinos,” or those living in the streets. Of the said number, 250,000 of them are children, who were displaced owing to unemployment, domestic abuse, human trafficking, and poverty that have forced them to stay in the streets.

“SINIGANG” – the sour yet savory Filipino traditional dish – retained its billing as the Best Soup in the world, at least according to the website TasteAtlas. For its 2021 Awards, TasteAtlas said “Sinigang” topped the soup category with a 4.63 rating, beating the Ciorbă de fasole cu afumătură of România (4.55) and Shoyu Ramen of Japan (4.54). Rounding out the top 5 were Mercimek çorbası of Turkey and Japan’s Tonkotsu Ramen. TasteAtlas also listed Tortang Talong, Lumpiang Shanghai and Sinigang na Baboy as some of the best dishes of Filipino cuisine. The website also named Locavore and Sentro 1771 as among the restaurants that serve good sinigang. The Aristocrat, Balay Dako, Sebastian’s Ice Cream, Locavore and Good Taste were among the website’s recommended Filipino restaurants. Last year, TasteAtlas, a website dedicated to celebrating traditional food from all over the world, also gave its nod to the Pinoy dish as the world’s best-rated vegetable soup. It described sinigang as a unique soup that is a true representative of Filipino cuisine “with its sour lightness perfectly matching the harsh tropical heat of the country.” Meanwhile, in the website’s list of World’s Best Cuisines, Filipino cuisine ranked 19th among 50 countries, trailing the top 3 of Italian, Greek and Spanish cuisines.

PRESIDENTIAL candidate and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso said he will appoint as secretary of the Department of National Defense a flag officer from the Navy who has the expertise in guarding the country’s borders and preventing the entry of illegal drugs. “So, you know for the first time in history, I will appoint from the Navy as secretary of national defense. Why? Because we are an archipelagic country,” Moreno said, during the Presidential One-on-One Interviews with entertainment host Boy Abunda recently. There must be something wrong with our ports because if there is no more manufacturing, it is difficult to sell, but why we come and catch, 48 kilos, 40 kilos, 5 kilos? So, I think it’s high time for us to address our boundaries, our entries - the port or entries. Then, when no one is planting, no one is entering, naturally there are no drugs available,” said Moreno, who realized the need to appoint a Navy Officer to the DND secretary. Rey E. Requejo

THE Land Bank of the Philippines (LandBank) on Saturday said it welcomes the National Bureau of Investigation probe into the alleged phishing scam that victimized teachers and said it will fully cooperate with the agency. “The Land Bank of the Philippines (LANDBANK) is welcoming the impending investigation by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on the alleged phishing schemes victimizing teachers, following a Department Order issued by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the NBI to immediately intervene on the matter,” the company said in a statement. “We will actively participate in this investigation and extend full cooperation to the NBI with the end in mind of further securing our depositors’ hardearned money,” LandBank president and CEO Cecilia Borromeo said. Leni, Kiko to ink pact with urban poor on Monday VICE President Leni Robredo and running mate Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, are set to sign a covenant with the Leni Urban Poor Council (LENI UP), a coalition of urban poor organizations nationwide, that aims to address the immediate issues faced by the urban poor in the country. The covenant signing will take place on Monday at the Leni-Kiko Volunteer Center in Quezon City. The event will be livestreamed via the Robredo People’s Council and Leni Urban Poor Facebook pages. Meanwhile, Robredo said she would push for government services that will address the day-to-day challenges faced by Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) employees, recognizing that the nature of their work is different from the rest of the workforce. For example, the presidential aspirant noted that one of the most pressing issues of the BPO industry is the safety and security of employees, especially when it comes to public transportation. Robredo and Pangilinan’s programs for the urban poor – who are facing the most difficult challenges especially as the pandemic enters its third year – will be based on honest and good governance, and human rights advocacy.

TAIPEI -- Taiwan will not send an official delegation to the opening or closing of the Beijing Winter Olympics due to China’s strict pandemic controls and flight disruptions, the self-ruled island’s governing body for sport said. The decision comes at a time when relations between Beijing and Taipei are at their lowest in decades with China ramping up military and economic pressure under President Xi Jinping. Taiwan’s Sports Administration said late Friday that its 15-member delegation will not attend the opening and closing ceremonies due to “pandemic prevention and flight schedules”. Its tiny winter team, which includes four athletes, will be flying to China from the United States, Switzerland and Taiwan, the administration added in a statement. “According to the event’s pandemic prevention and entry policy, flights have been adjusted and delayed, and not all could arrive in Beijing by the opening ceremony on Feb. 4.” AFP

Biden to send US troops amid Ukraine talks push
W
ASHINGTON— US President Joe Biden sought to maintain pressure on Russian leader Vladimir Putin over Ukraine Friday, announcing a small troop deployment to eastern Europe even as top Pentagon officials backed a renewed push for diplomacy.
Taiwan won’t send officials to Beijing tilt
As President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Western leaders to avoid stirring “panic” over the massive Russian troop buildup on his country’s borders, Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed on the need for de-escalation. Neither Putin nor his European and American counterparts had until now appeared ready to give ground in the weeks-long crisis, the worst in decades between Russia and the West. But according to a Macron aide, Putin told the French leader in a call lasting more than an hour that he had “no offensive plans.” In Washington, Biden nevertheless said he would soon send a small number of US troops to bolster the NATO presence in eastern Europe as tensions remain heightened. The United States already has tens
of thousands of troops stationed across mostly Western Europe. At the Pentagon, top officials urged a focus on diplomacy while saying that Russia now had enough troops and equipment in place to threaten the whole of Ukraine. Any such conflict, warned the top US general, Joint Chiefs Chairman Mark Milley, would be “horrific” for both sides. “If that was unleashed on Ukraine, it would be significant, very significant, and it would result in a significant amount of casualties,” Milley said. But speaking alongside Milley, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said war could still be avoided. “Conflict is not inevitable. There is still time and space for diplomacy,” said Austin. “Mr Putin can do the right thing as well,” said Austin. “There is no reason
that this situation has to devolve into conflict.” During his talks with Macron, Putin “expressed no offensive plans and said he wanted to continue the talks with France and our allies,” the aide to the French president said. Their conversation “enabled us to agree on the need for a de-escalation,” the aide told journalists. Putin “said very clearly that he did not want confrontation.” Complex threat Since October, Russia has amassed more than 100,000 combat troops and equipment, as well as support forces, along its frontier with Ukraine and more recently in Belarus, which borders Ukraine on the north. Western officials say Russia has also mustered more air and sea assets in the region, creating a complex threat like none seen since the Cold War. AFP
HK university covers tribute to Tiananmen HONG KONG -- Hong Kong’s oldest university covered up one of the last public tributes to the deadly 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown on Saturday, as Beijing continues to muzzle dissent in the financial hub. Hong Kong was the only place in China where mass remembrance of Tiananmen was tolerated, but authorities have driven such activities underground after imposing a sweeping national security law on the city. The University of Hong Kong (HKU) last month removed a famous statue commemorating pro-democracy protesters killed by Chinese troops around Tiananmen Square. At least two other local universities removed artworks in public areas marking the crackdown that same week. On Saturday, a large slogan painted on an HKU campus bridge mourning the Tiananmen “martyrs” that had escaped the earlier censorship was blocked with metal sheets. An AFP reporter saw construction workers covering the calligraphy, which read: “The heroic spirit of martyrs slaughtered in cold blood will live forever, the fire of democracy that overcomes evil will never be put out”. Vietnamese bid farewell to ‘father of mindfulness’ HUE, Vietnam—Tens of thousands of Vietnamese on Saturday bade farewell to the late monk and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh -- one of the world’s most influential religious leaders -- ahead of his cremation ceremony in the country’s Buddhist heartland. The Zen master, who was credited with bringing mindfulness to the West and whose reach in Buddhism was seen as second only to the Dalai Lama, died aged 95 a week ago at the Tu Hieu Pagoda in
the central city of Hue. His remains were brought to an open cremation site on Saturday morning, followed by a crowd of tens of thousands including Buddhist monks in yellow and brown robes and followers dressed in grey. The procession chanted Buddhist prayers. “We must bid farewell to our master. He plays an important role in my family’s life, helping us through our most difficult
moments,” said Do Quan, a follower who travelled from Hanoi with his wife and son. Nam Anh, 22, said the monk was a national treasure. “I am really very proud that Vietnam has such an outstanding figure who had great influence across the world.” Widely known as the father of mindfulness, Thich Nhat Hanh wrote more than 100 books on the practice and hosted retreats worldwide. Laos makes second-biggest meth seizure of 36m pills BANGKOK -- Laos police have made their second-biggest single seizure of illegal drugs, uncovering 36 million methamphetamine pills, a United Nations official said Saturday. The raid in the northern province of Bokeo came three months after officers netted Asia’s biggest ever haul in the same area with 55 million meth pills found in a beer truck.
Laos is part of the Golden Triangle covering the border areas with Myanmar and Thailand that has for decades been a hub for Southeast Asia’s lucrative drug trade. Since Bangkok ramped up border patrols to stop the spread of coronavirus, Laos has become a gateway for traffickers moving meth out of Myanmar’s troubled Shan state across the Mekong River into Thailand.
UN Office on Drugs and Crime regional representative Jeremy Douglas said four people were arrested in connection with the drug bust in the town of Huay Xai on Wednesday and authorities also found 590 kilograms of crystal meth. “Those four who were arrested were pretty low level... there were no kingpins,” he told AFP. 168K...Cabotaje said about 15.5 million children can be inoculated, based on the Philippine Statistics Authority data. “We will do it by tranches depending on the vaccines that will arrive,” she said. Parents or guardians must bring the child’s birth certificate or any proof of filiation. Children aged seven and above would also have to sign an assent form. Cabotaje said the pediatric vaccination will initiate the “cocoon protection” for families, especially those with children below five years old who cannot yet receive the COVID-19 jab. She said 15 million doses of the lowerdose Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine are expected to arrive in the first and second quarters this year. On February 3 and 9, 1.56 million doses will be shipped to Manila. “We are expecting weekly deliveries after that. We are still determining the quantity but for the next two quarters, the 15 million doses would be delivered,” she said. As of Wednesday, the Philippines already partially vaccinated at least 60.2 million individuals, while more than 58.4 million are already fully immunized. More than 7 million, meanwhile, already received their boosters. In a related development, seven children in Virac town, Catanduanes who played with medical waste found in the vicinity of their village tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday. Authorities antigen-tested the children, ages 3 to 11, after they played with used syringes disposed in the coast of Barangay Concepcion. A woman who was seen scolding the children for playing with medical waste was also infected. (See full story online at
NCR...Under Alert Level 2, the second-lowest in the alert level system, certain establishments and activities are allowed to operate at 50 percent capacity indoors catering to fully vaccinated adults (and minors, even if unvaccinated) and at 70 percent capacity outdoors. The reproduction rate, which refers to the number of people infected by one case, was 0.63 in the NCR on Wednesday. A reproduction number that is below 1 indicates the transmission of the virus is slowing down. Meanwhile, the country’s positivity rate was at 33.3 percent, based on samples of 56,447 individuals on Jan. 27, according to the DOH. “The downward trend has slowed in the past four days but new cases still tracking below Jan 20 projections. Public must continue to comply with health protocols,” OCTA Research fellow Dr. Guido David said on Twitter. Meanwhile, the seven-day positivity rate – which refers to the percentage of people who were found positive for COVID-19 among the total number of individuals tested -- in the region also went down to 21%. David said Metro Manila may be placed under moderate risk by January 29. The DOH, however, on Friday said NCR’s risk classification has already dropped to moderate from high risk. NCR was classified at high risk on January 24. (See full story online at manilastandard.net)
of the Commission on Elections division handling Marcos’ cases, Guanzon said a ponencia should have been submitted on January 17, a week after the petitions were raffled to Ferolino’s office. “As we have agreed in the First Division, you were to write your ponencia to be submitted to the First Division on 17 January 2022,” Guanzon said in the memo. “On 17 January 2022, you informed me that you would not be able to do so due to the COVID illness of your lawyer assigned to study these cases. Your lawyer however has since recovered and you are no longer in isolation.” Guanzon said she had informed Ferolino of her vote to disqualify Marcos on January 17, by giving a copy of her Memorandum of Vote and Separate Opinion. “Further, on 24 January 2022, I sent your several text messages asking you to finish your ponencia as agreed upon, or waive the drafting of the decision in favor of Commissioner Marlon S. Casquejo,” Guanzon added. “You refused to avail the latter option.” “As I’ve mentioned, eighteen (18) days have lapsed since the three consolidated cases were raffled to you, and it is unjustifiable that you have not submitted your ponencia to the First Division.” Guanzon said Ferolino was “deliberately delaying” the release of her ponencia until Guanzon’s retirement on February 2 – which would negate her vote -- and that Ferolino’s move aimed to defeat her vote. “This way, my separate opinion will not be attached to the Majority Resolution and will not form part of the records.” Guanzon said. lamented Guanzon’s act of making public her position ahead of the Comelec First Division’s ruling on Marcos’ disqualification case, saying it was a clear case of partisan politics. “It is unfortunate that even the Presiding Commissioner of a Comelec division could play partisan politics. Commissioner Guanzon’s act of prematurely disclosing her vote on the consolidated petitions to disqualify presidential aspirant Bongbong Marcos (BBM) is nothing short of bullying,” the Deputy Speaker said. On Friday, lawyer Romulo Macalintal, the lead counsel of Vice President Leni Robredo in the electoral protest filed by Marcos against her in 2016, recommended punishment against Guanzon for prematurely disclosing her vote to disqualify Marcos Jr. ahead of the First Division’s ruling. Macalintal also said earlier Comelec en banc should look into the act of the outgoing commissioner for possible violation on the confidentiality of the poll body’s internal proceedings. “It has now become apparent that Guanzon’s actions were calculated to bully the ponente (who already admitted that she has been pressured to adopt Guanzon’s opinion) and the concoction that a big politician is meddling in her division was all made up,” Marcoleta said. “The government had been advising our people to be vigilant against all forms of scams and not to lose their guards against such posturings. The fact that the ‘bullying’ works on the entire electorate, this one of Guanzon is the wiliest,” he added. See full story online

“In general, we have a policy like that, on acceptance of donations, because we don’t want to encourage patronage politics,” David added. Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) is prepared to carry out “warrantless arrests” against those proven to have threatened journalists this election season, its spokesperson said on Saturday. Police Spokesperson Col. Roderick Augustus Alba said this developed after the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) designated the police as so-called media security focal persons or “media security vanguards.” “If we need to arrest the persons concerned, we have enough evidence, we could do warrantless arrests or if someone has already filed a case (with) warrants of arrests, we can apprehend them,” said Alba, the chief focal person nationwide for media complaints, during a televised public briefing. “Of course, we will examine and validate all complaints. Move-in ready communities rise in Pampanga and Bataan
EACH calendar year brings fresh resolve and determination to make changes in one’s life—from recharging career goals to upgrading one’s residence. With the pandemic now seen as a manageable threat, it’s no surprise that people are looking forward to a more productive and stable 2022. One big step that they may undertake is buying their very first home. While finding a cozy and comfortable place to live in is quite easily the goal, the search for it can be an exciting but especially challenging experience. Prospective homebuyers do not wake up one day and decide to invest their savings in the first house they see. There are key factors in the planning process such as location, affordability, and commitment. This is why trusted homebuilders such as Bria Homes consider these issues as it continues to provide top quality homes of choice to Filipinos nationwide. Longtime residents of Pampanga and Bataan may want to upgrade to modern Bria communities in these progressive provinces. These are potential homebuyers who want to try Bria community living but do not wish to leave their old hometown. There are also families and individuals who need to relocate to Northern and Central Luzon to pursue new life goals. These home seekers need no longer wait for the homes of their choice. Leading property developer Bria Homes offers ready-for-occupancy units in their communities in Pampanga and Bataan, and homebuyers may move straight into their brand-new homes as soon as the ink on their property documents is dry. Bria’s RFO homes are tastefully designed house-and-lot units tucked within gated communities that are secured by perimeter fences, guarded entrances and exits, 24/7 CCTV coverage and solar lights that illuminate the streets at night. Bria Homes in Pampanga and Bataan feature recreational amenities that help foster wholesome and thriving connections among homeowners. These include multipurpose halls that can host events, covered basketball courts for residents of all ages, and children’s playgrounds. Wide open green spaces also make for walkable neighborhoods that spur families to enjoy fresh air together. Bria Homes also prioritize the health and wellness of every resident. Bria Pampanga and Bataan boast of reliable Internet connections. Homeowners may pay for remittances and amortization through partner banks—and do cashless transactions through AllEasy, GCash and PayMaya. Remote work and learning are conducted through Zoom and Google Meet. Entertainment and other leisure activities are viewed or joined in via streaming services or YouTube. Bria Homes Pampanga and Bataan are located near commercial establishments. With these developments situated close to major infrastructure projects, travel time to Metro-Manila and other vital points in the region has been drastically reduced, boosting the value appreciation of these properties. “Bria Homes is all about bringing every Filipino within reach of their home of choice,” said Eduardo Aguilar, division head of BRIA Homes. “And with ready-for-occupancy units in such projects as BRIA Pampanga and Bataan, our clients can move into their brand-new home as soon as they want.”
Coca-Cola delivers relief to typhoon victims By Othel V. Campos NEARLY two months after Typhoon Odette caused massive destruction in the Visayas and Mindanao, Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines Inc. continues to send assistance including safe drinking water. CCBPI, Coca-Cola’s bottling arm in the country, mobilized its resources to deliver 60,000 liters of Wilkins drinking water across the affected provinces and cities— as the collective recovery efforts begin a shift towards rebuilding. The company is also working with the local government of Mandaue City in Cebu for the deployment of a SETA machine—a mobile water treatment equipment that processes water to make it potable. The SETA machine was previously installed in evacuation sites and communities in Marawi, Davao del Sur, and Bicol following calamities. CCBPI’s outreach was launched even as the company itself was recovering from the onslaught of Typhoon Odette, which disrupted operations of 15 of its sites—from major plants and distribution centers to sales offices. While its sites experienced massive power outages and had to run on limited generator capacities, CCBPI associates carried out priority initiatives of providing relief and potable water to affected families in the communities it serves.
“Despite the company bearing the brunt of Odette, we saw to it that we fulfilled our responsibility to help— and I am very proud that our teams on the ground stayed true to this calling of civic duty, social responsibility, and service,” said CCBPI president and chief executive Gareth McGeown. He said Coca-Cola’s Cebu plant in Mandaue became a main hub for water support in Cebu to provide immediate relief and help sustain rehabilitation efforts in the province and in other areas in the Visayas. The plant opened its doors 24/7 in the immediate aftermath of the typhoon to deliver water across affected areas and for locals to source drinking water from the site. “Our people first commitment will always be our guiding principle when serving and helping our partners in times of great need. That our people carried out this commitment despite the wide-reaching challenges of a major calamity speaks to the strength of character of our employees,” McGeown said. CCBPI also allocated a P5-million disaster relief fund for its associates who were affected by the typhoon. Further relief assistance, which includes over 70,000 liters of drinking water and almost P800,000 worth of grocery items, was delivered to barrios, towns and municipalities destroyed by Odette.

Ateneo brings together international experts to weigh in on what we need to do to move on from the pandemic.
Shifting from zero-COVID to living with COVID FOUR experts from the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan and Singapore were brought together for an in-depth discussion on the topic of making the dream of living with COVID-19 a reality on Jan. 19 through Zoom. The panel, which discussed “Recalibrating Inclusive Health and Economic Recovery in Southeast Asia: From Zero-COVID-19 to Living with COVID-19,” was composed of Dr. Manuel Dayrit, former secretary of the Department of Health and professor at Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health; Dr. Eko Prasojo, professor at Faculty of Administrative Services of Universitas Indonesia; Dr. Kai Hong Phua, adjunct senior research fellow at Institute of Policy Studies - Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore; and Dr. Chien-jen Chen, former vice president of Taiwan and academician at Academia Sinica. The online roundtable discussion was organized by the Ateneo School of Government, through the Ateneo Policy Center, in partnership with the Eastern Regional Organization for Public Administration with the aim of discussing some of the most common questions and concerns regarding the shift towards living with the virus. The panelists discussed some problems that caused distrust among the public during the start of the pandemic. Dr. Dayrit pointed to allegations of corruption and issues like the Dengvaxia
controversy as stumbling blocks that sowed distrust in the minds of many Filipinos. In the case of Indonesia, Dr. Eko said that a significant portion of their population would much rather listen to informal leaders such as religious leaders or village leaders regarding the pandemic. As such, he said there’s immense value in tapping these leaders to educate the public. To address this, Dr. Phua underscored the value of having expertise. He explained that having a group of experts that have come to a consensus regarding the data that they are dealing with would help national leaders have a better grasp of the information that they would then share to the public. He said this would minimize confusion and foster greater trust in government communication moving forward. “It is very important to provide accurate information immediately through mass media, especially through electronic channels,” Dr. Chen said. Dr. Chen also said that eradicating vaccine nationalism is integral in protecting more people around the world against the virus, because doing so will allow us to live with the virus without fear of it causing massive disruption in our economies and societies. “No one is safe, unless everyone is safe and no country is safe, unless every country is safe,” Dr. Chen said. “We have to help each other. This is the only way. We need global solidarity for global health.”
Meanwhile, with the sudden spike of cases triggered by the Omicron variant, Dr. Phua said that a common sense approach to managing cases would be by investing in a primary healthcare system that will be able to deal with patients in a more efficient manner. “If you take the approach of a cost-effective and sustainable system, I think the emphasis should be on the primary healthcare system, that’s able to monitor and detect symptoms early enough then refer them for better management at the more acute stages,” Dr. Phua said. Another important thing Dr. Dayrit pointed out is that the Philippines needs to invest in building its capacity to produce vaccines as it will be key in addressing the needs of the people. “We need to have some form of vaccine production capacity. Even if we can’t do the research, we need to have the capacity to be able to copy and produce. If we can do that, we will have some security when it comes to vaccine supplies,” he said. On the question of how to strike a balance between economic recovery and mitigating the health crisis, Dr. Prasojo said that it’s important to continue the vaccine programs to ensure that we manage the spread of the disease, but with that governments should really zero in on propping up micro, small and medium enterprises as they are crucial in strengthening the economy.

HE level of play has been raised again after the Philippines booked a historic spot in the Asian Football Confederation(AFC) Women’s Asian Cup India 2022 quarter-finals, and a spot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup now beckons.
The Philippine Malditas national women’s football team overcame their jitters in the first half and played with more confidence in the last 45 minutes to get past Indonesia for an unforgettable 6-0 beating on Thursday evening at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune, India. “The team just keeps raising the bar every time you do something new, and create a lot of history, and creating a new ceiling for the team,” said Malditas coach Alen Stajcic after the Philippines finished second in Group B with their second triumph against a loss The Malditas, led by skipper Tahnnai Annis with two goals, completed their group stage campaign with six points, three behind Australia. They will have a great chance to improve when they clash with Chinese-Taipei in the quarter-final Sunday night. It was the Philippines’ first win over the Indonesians, who scored a similar 6-0 triumph over the Filipina booters back in 2013 during the group stage of the ASEAN Football Federation Women’s Championship. And their hard work has put the Malditas closer to one of five berths in the FIFA World Cup 2022, and this is what’s in store for the tournament’s top finishers. “The first time was Thailand. Now we have two matches in the Asian Cup that were won for the first time in history,” added Stajcic in a post-game press conference live-streamed on Webex. The former Australian Matildas coach noted that the Philippines will be in the quarterfinals for the first time, and in contention for their first ever slot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The Philippines went to work early and pressured Indonesia from the start, and were awarded a penalty as early as the fourth minute when Vivi Oktavia Riski got fouled for a handball. Katrina Guillou’s penalty shot was off, but she redeemed herself in the sixth minute when Guilliou picked up Carleigh Frilles’ cross and slotted it past Indonesia goalkeeper Riska Apriia. The score doubled the Philippines’ lead in the 27th minute when Sarina Bolden jumped and headed in a pass from Jessica Miclat from inside the penalty box. “So, you get a performance like that with two and a half games of good football, you keep raising the feeling and expectation of what you

HISTORY BECKONS: PH LADY BOOTERS KNOCKING ON WORLD CUP DOOR can achieve,” said Stajcic. The Philippines went on the offensive in the second half and probed the Indonesian backline for more goals. And the Philippines got another chance in the 56th minute, with Annis responding to a blocked attempt by Chandler McDaniel. As the ball bounced back to the middle from the right side of the box, the Filipina skipper flicked in a 30-meter volley which bounced to the back of the net. A fourth goal came for the Philippines off another penalty shot in the 73rd minute, following Amiatun’s foul on Dominque Randle. Jessica Miclat easily sent it the penalty attempt. “We came back with a bit more purpose and composure in the second half. And I think that really showed,” said Annis. Annis made her second marker in the 83rd minute with a blast from 20 meters out, and Malea Louise Cesar rushed the net in the fourth minute of added time for the Malditas’ last goal. Stajcic is hopeful that the Malditas will live up to expectations in their Sunday encounter at 7:30 p.m.(10 p.m. in Manila)
with Chinese-Taipei, which last played in the FIFA World Cup in 1991. Both the Malditas and Chinese-Taipei will not only seek a place in the semifinals, they will also fight for one of five available Asian seats to the 2022 FIFA World that will be awarded to the winner of the quarterfinals and the repechage round. Stajcic added that their clash with the Taiwanese booters will be an interesting game to watch. “For both teams, it’s the pressure. Chinese-Taipei has not been in the World Cup for a long time. The Philippines has never played them on the field. It’s gonna be about nerves. The team that handles it better will start well. But, that does not mean you will finish better,” said Stajcic. Chinese-Taipei reached the quarterfinals with their 5-0 blasting of Iran in Group A to enter the round of eight with China. Meanwhile, Australia swept its three-game assignment in Group B with a 2-1 win over Thailand Thailand at Mumbai Football Arena. Australia will cross paths with the Korea Republic in the quarterfinals while Thailand takes on Japan.

SITTHICAI Sitsonpeenong and Chingis Allazov barged advance to the ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix Championship Final following impressive victories inn the ONE: Only The Brave on Friday night at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Third-ranked featherweight kickboxing contender Sitsongpeenong dominated Davit Kiria from start to finish and punched his ticket to the ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix Championship Final. Sitthichai established himself early in this semifinal clash, picking apart Kiria with his signature left kick from range. In the second round, a left high kick landed for Sitthichai, sending the Georgian striker down for the count. The third round saw Sitthichai build an even wider lead, as he cruised to a unanimous decision win. The decorated Thai athlete will now face Chingiz Allazov in the final round of the prestigious tournament. Fourth-ranked featherweight kickboxing contender Chingiz Allazov advanced to the ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix Championship Final with a knockout victory over Smokin’ Jo Nattawut. Allazov put Nattawut on the seat of his pants with a combination early in the fight, but the Thai warrior made it back to his feet and beat the mandatory eight-count. Shortly after, a well-placed left hook to the temple dropped Nattawut again, ending the fight. Due to his strong performance, Allazov earned a US$50,000 bonus from ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong. Chinese veteran Zhang Lipeng made quick work of highly regarded lightweight Ruslan Emilbek Uulu, putting together one of the fastest finishes in divisional history with a 32-second knockout.
As Emilbek Uulu rushed forward with a combination, Zhang caught him with a destructive left hook to the jaw, instantly separating the Kyrgyzstani fighter from his senses. The Chinese star earned a US$50,000 bonus for his performance and made his case to battle a top lightweight next. Heavyweight kickboxing sensation Rade Opacic scored his fourth consecutive win in ONE Super Series with a stoppage of Francesko Xhaja. Opacic sent Xhaja to the canvas in the first round with a left high kick, which was followed by stinging straight punches. In the second round, Opacic sent Xhaja crashing to the mat once more with a devastating body shot. The Serbian star quickly
scored another knockdown, landing a bludgeoning right hand to the head. Finally, a devastating body shot crumpled Xhaja, giving Opacic the technical knockout victory due to three knockdowns in a single round and earning him a $US50,000 bonus. A highly anticipated strawweight showdown between #3-ranked Jarred Brooks and #4-ranked Hiroba Minowa kicked off the main card broadcast. Brooks authored a commanding performance across all three rounds, blasting Minowa with thunderous punching combinations while dominating the intense grappling exchanges. Minowa scored with a couple of flying knees late, but it wasn’t enough, as Brooks easily took home a unanimous decision.

PSC backs PH contingent in Beijing Winter Olympics THE Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) believes that skier Asa Miller’s participation in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics will provide pride and inspiration to Filipinos. The 21-year-old Filipino-American qualified for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games late last year in two alpine skiing’s events for his second stint in the biggest winter sporting event. “We wish Asa Miller good luck. The PSC is supporting her participation to the Winter Olympics and we hope that he comes back enriched with experience,” Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William Ramirez said. “It is such a pride to be represented in the Winter Olympics even though we are a tropical country.” Ramirez and the PSC commissioners granted the Philippine delegation’s financial assistance for the winter Olympics campaign worth P3.3 million. “We are seeking the inspiration of the whole archipelago to pray for Asa Miller and the delegation under CDM [Chef de Mission] Bones Floro,” Ramirez added, who also thanked Asa’s parents for their all-out support knowing that winter sports are very expensive. Kelly Miller, the father of Asa, and Filipina mother Polly Bisquera, are very supportive to Miller’s campaign abroad since competing in his first Olympics four years ago in Pyeongchang South Korea Winter Games. Chef de Mission Bones Floro and athletes welfare officer Joebert Yu are now setting up the athlete’s headquarter at the Yanqing Olympic Village as they anticipate the arrival of Miller, his father Kelly and Philippine Ski Snowboard Federation (PSSF) President Jim Palomar Apelar on Monday morning. “We are taking care of everything as we anticipate the arrival of Asa Miller and his team,” Floro said, whose Philippine delegation underwent strict health protocol at the Beijing International AirPort before taking a two-hour drive to the Yanqing district. Miller and the rest aboard via Japan Airlines will be arriving on Monday early morning.

Heart Evangelista’s look for the Dior fashion show
in Paris Fashion Week By Patricia Taculao
A
FTER almost two years of retreating online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, designer brands are back on the runway to celebrate Paris Fashion Week. And who else do we expect to see in one of the events of the season than Kapuso actress and socialite Heart Evangelista? Heart treated her fans on Instagram (@iamhearte) with a series of pictures and videos that documented her return to Paris. The first video she posted on Sunday showed her donning the signature Dior look that features a neutral turtleneck, a dramatic dress, and a matching blazer paired with high-fashion head accessories and a handbag. The actress then proceeded to open the balcony doors in her room to reveal
that she was back in Paris and how ecstatic she was to be. Indeed, she looked tres chic in her head-to-toe Dior ensemble while eating a croissant. Returning to Paris wasn’t the only surprise that Heart had in store in that video. She also announced that she’s now officially part of French fashion house Dior. “Ecstatic to spend my time here in Paris with a brand that has always been

close to my heart. Merci @dior, for making me part of your ever-growing family!” she said in another video of her dressing up in a matching vibrant skirt and blazer from Dior. Heart wasted no time taking Paris by attending fashion shows, each in a stylish outfit that she prepared herself. She kept the pieces organized by placing them in Ziploc bags according to their brand and how she planned to wear them. Other fashion brands that she donned include Hermès, Chanel, Tony Ward, and Balmain. On her first day in Paris Fashion Week, Heart chose a Chanel ensemble. Her outfit of choice was a black twopiece pant set that she made even more stunning by adding Chanel accessories like a belt, chain, crossbody bag, and clutch. Like many fashion icons, Heart isn’t afraid to play around with her clothing

by layering them on top of each other. Not only does it add to her overall flair, but it also keeps her warm amid the Paris winter. On Tuesday, the actress chose a Louis Vuitton outfit that consisted of pants, a black turtleneck, a bright pink striped sweater, a pastel yellow vest, and high-heeled boots. She showed her quick transformation through a video on Instagram, where she also joked that despite not having a glam team, her 24 years of experience in taping helped her change quickly from one look to the next. Although Heart enjoyed her solo trip to Paris for Fashion Week, she shared

that the highlight of her trip was the Dior event. The French fashion house welcomed her with open arms by giving her VIP treatment and the chance to be featured alongside other celebrities like Rosamund Pike and Cara Delevingne. Still, Heart relished the chance to attend Haute couture events in what she calls her first trip as an independent woman. The actress also took the time to visit some tourist spots and enjoy French cuisine, still in head-turning outfits from luxury fashion brands. Oh, how we would love to be in her shoes (or clothes in this case).
The Kapuso actress also took to the streets to enjoy her return to Paris.

eight original songs and two bonus tracks. “We’ve been through a lot before we’re able to compose the songs, and eventually produce them. The songs went through ups and downs na hindi namin akalain na eto na siya,” Gigi shared in a virtual junket held on Friday. Its key track “O Bakit Ba” is about the never-ending cycle of getting hurt written by Gigi and Erwin Lacsa. “The song is for people who love deeply, na minsan martir na sa pag-mamahal. I know some friends who are like that when they’re in a relationship. And despite the hardship at pagiging martir, they don’t regret it. It would really make you ask the question ‘O Bakit Ba?’” she related. The Kapamilya artist also co-wrote another song in the album entitled “Letting Go” together with Jon Cruz and Erin Justo. The album also includes Gigi’s debut single and breakup anthem “Sakalam” and the official soundtrack of ABSCBN Entertainment’s Viral

Soon, she will be part of the network’s live-action adaptation of the hit anime series Voltes V Legacy as the love interest of Big Bert played by Matt Lozano. “It’s my first time to actually be in a love team. Excited na ako na
mapakita talaga ang story namin ni Big Bert. Matt and I are really good friends. Nu’ng malaman ko na magiging ka-love team ko siya, ang saya-saya ko kasi feeling ko magkakasundo kami and excited ako na makatrabaho siya,” she says. She also shares that being part of GMA Music’s sub-label GMA Playlist has been a surreal experience and she is grateful for the opportunities handed out to her. “Ever since I started with GMA, one of my projects with them was to sing soundtracks for GMA dramas. Napakagaan ng loob ko sa kanila, they’ve all been so nice to me. To be one of their handpicked artists for the label is surreal to me. I’m just really glad to be releasing songs under them so thankful ako sa GMA Playlist for opening so many doors to me,” shares Crystal.

‘Scream’ movie introduces new generation of stars JUST as the original 1996 Scream film starred a group of young actors who would go on to achieve enormous success, the makers of the 2022 Scream set out to fill their movie with an equally talented group of up-and-comers destined for stardom. In the new version, Melissa Barrera (In the Heights) plays Samantha “Sam” Carpenter, who returns to Woodsboro after a long absence when her younger sister Tara is attacked by Ghostface. Like the character she portrays, Barrera has a younger sister in real life and says she identified with Sam’s protective instinct. Jenna Ortega (Netflix’s You) plays Tara Carpenter, Sam’s young-

When viewers first meet Richie, he’s working with Sam in a bowling alley, and when she learns that her sister has been attacked, Richie goes with Sam to Woodsboro to keep her safe. Every Scream movie needs a resident film expert to explain the intricacies of the genre, and in the 2022 Scream, that character is Mindy, played by Jasmin Savoy Brown (The Leftovers). Throughout his career, Gooding has played many jocks and student-athletes, and what he enjoyed most about playing Chad was being able to satirize those tropes. Rounding out the cast are new additions Dylan Minnette (13 Reasons Why) as Wes, Sonia Ammar (Jappeloup) as Liv, Mikey Madison (Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood) as Amber, and Kyle Gallner (Ghosts of War) as Vince. Scream unspools in local cinemas on Feb. 2.

Can’t Sleep? Here’s a song for your late-night thoughts AS A teaser for his upcoming EP, Daniel Paringit welcomes the new year with “Sayo” to accompany listeners on those nights when their minds just can’t help but run wild. In a season of new beginnings, new resolutions, and new commitments, Daniel keeps our feet on the ground with a new song that is about an experience that surely isn’t new to us: having late-night thoughts. What begins as just a simple daydream all of a sudden turns into a whole night of several trips down
memory lane and the next thing you know, you see through your window and realize that the sun is already rising. That is precisely the adventure this song paints for us. With its steady tempo and uplifting chords, the beginning instrumental alone already takes our mind to another place. Our imaginations then take flight and make their way to wherever, whenever, or whomever they want to go. Be it someone you’ve been thinking about for a while, a nos-
talgic place from your childhood, or even just little things as obscure as a cute cat video you saw while scrolling online today, this song acknowledges how far and wide our minds really run when we let them. It doesn’t always have to be about one specific person. It could just be a random memory or an existential question that’s been bugging you for the longest time. The beauty of the song lies not so much in what or who we think about, but more so the freeing feeling of let-
ting loose at that moment and allowing ourselves to fall down the rabbit hole we would otherwise avoid. Daniel’s voice and the lyrics act as somewhat our conscience during these moments, initially apprehensive and maybe even scared. But as the song progresses, we realize that looking back is not new to us at all and in fact, we do it a lot of times. With this comforting knowledge in hand, we are encouraged not to be afraid, but to simply be careful instead.

Does your pet freak out when you leave the house?
By Mariana Burgos
D
OES your pet go crazy whenever you leave the house? Do your pets destroy stuff or poop and urinate everywhere even if they are potty trained when you go out? I experienced this with our pets. Dogs and cats alike. Even our guinea pig did unusual things when we were away once. Professional pet trainers call this “separation anxiety.” I have had a lot of experiences with this. I had no idea why our pets did what they did even if we left them with enough food and water, and did not put them in kennels or cages. I would usually scold them every time we returned. My main problem was they would poop and urinate in places they should not. The mindboggling thing is they know exactly where they should do their business when we are all together. It is only when we are away that they do this. There was a time we stayed in Quezon City for almost a week and
our dog Milky was left in the province. When we returned, we found out Milky had almost completely destroyed our sofa bed. Another time, we went to Bicol for a vacation. Milky stayed at the home for rescues of Save Animals of Love and Light (Save ALL Inc.) but our cat Whisky was left alone in our apartment. When we got back, we found out that she had destroyed all the plastic bags and other storage containers in our kitchen. I did not understand then how it really was for them to be alone in the house and how to deal with it properly. It was only last year that I began to learn more about separation anxiety in

pets. When we had our wifi installed, I googled about it to understand our pets more. Last year, good friends were infected with covid. Tita Aileen and Edsil Bacalso and their son Bryan are human rights defenders and animal lovers just like us. They have five dogs and three cats. Their pets are all potty trained and they know their boundaries around the house. They did not really have any problems with their pets until they got infected with the virus. She and her husband were taken to the hospital due to their severe symptoms. Only Bryan was left in the house because he had very mild symptoms and he was responding to the medication better than his parents. Tita Aileen and Tito Edsil were confined for more than two weeks. While they were away, Bryan said their pets seemed to have freaked out. He said the dogs pooped and urinated all over the house. They also destroyed the sofa. Sounds very familiar to me. Yes, what happened with Tita Aileen’s pets is a clear example of “separation anxiety.” While in the hospital, their dogs felt something was “not right” or different with their daily routine because the alphas, their humans, were not around. For pets, that is a big deal, specially for dogs because dogs are “pack-oriented” animals, according to Ceasar Millan (my favorite dog whisperer). He said this means that for dogs, it is their nature to need to feel they belong to a group or a pack. They would look up to a leader or an alpha. That is why they tend to always follow who they see is above them in social standing. This is also how dogs earned the title “man’s best friend.” They will always be by your side no matter what and they see their human owner as their alpha. When something happens to their alpha that they are not used to, like being gone for a long time, they get confused and they try

to relay messages of confusion by doing things in unusual ways. Ceasar has been posting a lot of videos in Youtube about ways to help pet owners overcome this separation anxiety in their pets. One of my favorite videos about this is this: Cesar Explains How To Fix Separation Anxiety With Your Dog.
developed a special bond with each of our pets but that does not mean they fully understand our human life, and vice versa. What is natural for us is not always natural for our pets. Ceasar noted that for humans, it is natural for us to be away from our families so we can do what we want to do to have a better life. But this quarantine period is not natural for us because we are forced to stay in our homes and be locked down with our families. But for dogs, Ceasar stressed that being quarantined or being locked down with their families is the most natural thing for them. This helped me understand our pets more.

He explained that it is the human who he is training so the owner will be able to train their pet properly. He also pointed out that our usual and major mistake is we assume our pets understand things and situations the same way we do. We should not assume this because we are still different from them. Although we call ourselves their furparents, that does not mean they would naturally act and react just like human babies for us. We may have

Mazikeen and Harley taking a nap together
Mazikeen and Harley are now in their furever home.
By Rowena David I HAVE never had a cat with pyometra until I fostered a stray cat in September 2021. Mazikeen, as I named her, did not like being kept indoors at first and she would grab every opportunity to escape outside. She finally settled down after a few weeks. Her favorite spots in the house were my bed and on top of the fridge. She had taken a liking to Harley, a rescued kitten that I was also fostering, and had decided to “adopt” her. She would follow Harley around the house, groom her, and take naps beside her. They were inseparable. On the day of Mazikeen’s spaying, I dropped her off at the vet clinic early in the morning then I went home. Later that day, I received a call from Mazikeen’s vet who informed me that Mazikeen was pregnant but her uterus was also infected. The vet said that they had to perform a spay-abort as the infected uterus had to be surgically removed. It was an unexpected development as I had not seen any sign that Mazikeen was sick in any way, but I was relieved that her surgery had gone well.

Pyometra and Pets As fur parents, it is always beneficial to arm ourselves with information so we will know the signs to look out for next time. I did a little research about pyometra, and here is what I learned: What is pyometra? According to animalcenter.com, pyometra is “an infection of the uterus in dogs and cats. It is relatively common, affecting approximately 25% of unspayed female dogs and cats. It is a serious condition which results in a variety of clinical and pathological signs requiring emergency surgery to remove the infected uterus.” It is a life-threatening condition, and therefore another reason to have your pets spayed. Furthermore, having your pets spayed is less expensive than having them treated for pyometra as it requires longer surgery time, the incision is larger, and it is more expensive than a routine spay. Which animal is susceptible to pyo-
metra? Pyometra can affect any animal that has not been fixed. What is the recommended treatment for pyometra? According to vcahospitals.com, "The preferred treatment is to surgically remove the uterus and ovaries. The Pyometra surgery is somewhat more complicated than a routine spay.” An alternative treatment is prostaglandin injections. In this kind of medical treatment, special hormones called prostaglandins are injected into the pet causing the uterus to contract and eject its pus. However, the downside is pyometra can recur. What are the signs of pyometra in cats? Some cats exhibit no signs. However, thesprucepets.com says some cats show symptoms such as bloody or puss-filled vaginal discharge, urinating outside of the litterbox, bloated abdomen, lethargy, vomiting, decreased
appetite, blood in urine, increased urination, increased thirst, and excessive licking at the vaginal opening. What are the symptoms of pyometra in dogs? Dogs and cats have the same symptoms but harmonyanimalhospital. net says dogs “may also appear to be uncomfortable, because pyometra is a particularly painful condition for dogs, while being somewhat less so for cats.” How to prevent pyometra? Having your pet spayed is the only way to prevent a pyometra. What is the aftercare for pets after pyometra surgery? In Mazikeen’s case, the aftercare was minimal. I just had to make sure that her vet’s instructions were strictly followed, her meds given on time, and her incision protected by having her wear an Elizabethan collar. Additionally, the American College of Veterinary surgeons says on their website that “The care is generally the
same as it would be for a routine spay; however, your pet will be on antibiotics as prescribed by your veterinarian for at least 10 days. The animal should not be allowed to have normal play, stairs, or any off-leash activities for the first two weeks after surgery, and the incision should be protected from selftrauma.” I am glad that Maziken’s pyometra was discovered early on before it was too late. She and her “adopted” kitty Harley have found their forever home. They were adopted together. The inseparable duo will never be separated, thanks to compassionate people who choose to adopt homeless animals. Mazikeen’s and Harley’s new names are Sersi and Sprite, respectively. New names for a new chapter in their life with their forever family.
