ICC suspends drug war probe Halts on envoy’s request; Palace insists not under court’s jurisdiction

HE International Criminal Court has suspended its investigation into suspected rights abuses committed under President Rodrigo Duterte’s “war on drugs” following a request from Manila. The Hague-based court in September authorized a probe of the campaign that has left thousands of people dead, saying it resembled an illegitimate and systematic attack on civilians. According to court documents, Philippine Ambassador to the Netherlands Eduardo Malaya requested a deferral. “The prosecution has temporarily suspended its investigative activities while it assesses the scope and effect of the deferral request,” ICC prosecutor Karim Khan wrote

in a court notification dated November 18. He said the prosecution would request additional information from the Philippines. Despite its request to the ICC, Manila said it maintained that the court had no jurisdiction. “We reiterate that it is the position of the Philippine government that the International Criminal Court has no jurisdiction over it,” Duterte’s spokesman Karlo Nograles said in a statement Saturday. DOJ seeks to review Quiboloy rape case after US indictment THE Department of Justice (DOJ) is taking a second look at the rape case filed against pastor Apollo Quiboloy, President Rodrigo Duterte’s spiritual adviser, after his indictment Thursday for sex trafficking charges in the United States. Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said the rape case against Quiboloy, the founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ the Name Above Every Name (KOJC) church, was dismissed. “No sex trafficking charges have been filed or are pending in the Philippines against Quiboloy involving the same

LAND-BASED and sea-based overseas Filipino workers set for deployment may soon get COVID-19 booster shots, vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. announced Saturday. This developed as the clinical trial for the P240-million mixand-match COVID-19 vaccines in the country has started, according to the Department of Science and Technology. Also, over 2,000 health care

workers have received booster shots since the rollout earlier this week, the Department of Health said Saturday. However, an official of the government's task force against COVID-19 on Saturday called on the public to be "conscious" when going out and to still bring face shields, as some establishments require it amid the looser quarantine. National Task Force Against COVID-19 Spokesperson Restituto Padilla said the policy CONTINUED ON 3A

DOH: Active cases could drop to 7k by Dec.; 1k daily hits seen

DEPARTMENT of Health official on Saturday said the country’s active COVID-19 infections could drop further to at least 7,000 nationwide during the December holidays if current trends remained, as the positivity rate also continued to dip.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, however, noted the projection made last week depended on the country’s mobility, detection-to-isolation response, and the public’s compliance to health protocols. Meanwhile, the OCTA Research Group said Saturday the Philippines may see less than 1,000 new daily COVID-19 cases by the end of November, as new infections consistently eased, and the number of

vaccinated Filipinos grew. “The cases have decreased. The 7-day average in the Philippines is now 1,400. We expect that to go down to less than 1,000 by the end of the month, consistently less than 1,000,” said OCTA fellow Prof. Guido David. The country on Saturday reported 1,474 more COVID-19 infections, with the daily tally falling below 1,500 for a fifth straight day, data showed.

Vergeire also warned that the number of active cases could also go up to 20,000 during the same period if mobility rises to 98 percent, and the public’s health compliance decreased by as much as 24 percent. “This is still low, and we can see that it will continue to decrease. We still need, however, to maintain this and comply with safety protocols,” she said. In related developments, the revised testing and quarantine protocols for international travelers will be implemented starting Monday, November 22, National Task Force Against COVID-19 (NTF) spokesperson Restituto Padilla Jr. said Saturday. Also, the Air Carriers Association of the Philippines (ACAP) called on the government to adjust travel its policies, as the demand for flights is picking up as the holiday season nears. Cebu Pacific Air announced Saturday that local government units of 24 domestic destinations in its network have eased local travel requirements.

P1.20 rollback forecast for gas, P1/l for diesel PUMP prices of petroleum products are expected to go down by Tuesday, projections by Unioil Petroleum Philippines showed. In its fuel price forecast for the trading week for November 23 to 29, Unioil said the price per liter of diesel may go down by P1.10 to P1.20. Gasoline prices, meanwhile, may decrease by P0.90 to P1.00 per liter, it added. Oil companies usually announce fuel price adjustments every Monday, to take effect on the following morning. Effective November 16, fuel firms decreased prices by P0.90 per liter for gasoline, while diesel price remained steady. Year-to-date adjustments stand at a total net increase of P20.05 per liter for gasoline and P17.50 per liter for diesel.

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte’s rejection of a coalition among the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), Pederalismo ng Dugong Dakilang Samahan (PDDS), and Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) was expected, the latter party said. In a statement Saturday, Lakas-CMD, chaired by the President’s daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, said: “The President’s opinion on an alliance with Lakas-CMD is nothing new. PDP’s rejection of the BBM-Sara tandem was already relayed to Lakas-CMD last week, and this was revealed by Mayor Inday Sara Duterte in her public statement on November 16.” President Duterte, in a meeting with Oriental Mindoro leaders in Calapan City on Friday, said he could not allow PDP-Laban and PDDS to ally with Lakas-CMD because of presidential aspirant Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The PDDS is an allied party of the ruling PDP-Laban. President Duterte, who chairs PDP-Laban and is running for senator under PDDS, said he could not support Marcos because of his “weak” personality. “No, I cannot because Marcos is there,” he said. “I’m not impressed with him. He is really a weak leader. That’s true. I’m not tainting his reputation. He’s really weak because he’s a spoiled child, an only son,” he said in Filipino in his speech. In response, Lakas-CMD said: “While both the President and Mayor Sara have been quite clear in their public pronouncements, the only contradiction seems to be coming from Senator Bong Go, who belied PDP’s rejection of Lakas’ proposed tandem, contradicting both Mayor Sara and the President’s statements.”

US teen shooter Rittenhouse cleared over protester deaths

Kyle Rittenhouse enters the courtroom to hear the verdicts in his trial prior to being found not guilty on all counts at the Kenosha County Courthouse on November 19 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. AFP

ENOSHA—Kyle Rittenhouse, the American teenager who shot dead two men during protests and riots against police brutality in Wisconsin last year, was acquitted of all charges on Friday after a high-profile and politically divisive trial.

A jury found Rittenhouse, 18, not guilty of reckless and intentional homicide and other charges stemming from the shootings that took place in August 2020 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Rittenhouse, who claimed he acted in self-defense, sobbed and shook as the verdict was read, sank into his chair and embraced his lawyer before rushing out of the courtroom. President Joe Biden warned against violence following the verdict in the closely watched trial and appealed for calm. “While the verdict in Kenosha will leave many Americans feeling angry and concerned, myself included, we must acknowledge that the jury has spoken,” Biden said in a statement. “I urge everyone to express their views peacefully, consistent with the rule of law.” There were scattered cheers and clapping from supporters of Rittenhouse outside the Kenosha court-

house after the verdict. Several opponents marched around beating drums and chanting “Guilty, guilty, the whole system is guilty as hell.” Rittenhouse testified during the two-week trial that he shot dead two men and wounded another with his AR-15 semi-automatic rifle after being attacked. Prosecutors dismissed the self-defense claim, saying it was the then 17-year-old Rittenhouse who “provoked” the events during a night of unrest in Kenosha. - National attention Rittenhouse faced five charges -one count of intentional homicide, one count of reckless homicide, one count of attempted intentional homicide and two counts of recklessly endangering safety. The most serious charge -- intentional homicide -- carried a mandatory sentence of life in prison. AFP

Colombia sorry for police cadets in Nazi uniforms BOGOTA—Colombia’s President Ivan Duque issued an apology Friday after cadets at a police academy caused outrage by dressing up as Nazis for a “cultural exchange” event in honor of Germany. Photos of the ceremony were shared Thursday on an official police Twitter account. In it, students are seen dressed in the grey-green uniform of the Wehrmacht, one of them sporting a small, Adolf Hitler-style moustache. Others are dressed in the black uniform of the SS, complete with the red swastika armband. The black, red and yellow German flag and balloons in the same colors decorated the venue that also featured a replica Luftwaffe plane, copies of Nazi firearms, and swastikas on the tablecloths. Two police officers in Colombian uniforms inaugurated the event by cutting a ribbon, the pictures showed. “From the SimonBolivar police academy in the city of Tulua, we are organizing an #InternationalWeek with guest country #Germany. With these cultural exchanges, we are strengthening the knowledge of our police students,” proclaimed the police Twitter account. The photos were met with a mixture of anger and incredulity on social media, provoking deep embarrassment for the authorities. AFP

FromtheFRONTPAGE ICC...“In any event, we welcome the judiciousness of the new ICC prosecutor, who has deemed it fit to give the matter a fresh look and we trust that the matter will be resolved in favor of the exoneration of our government and the recognition of the vibrancy of our justice system,” he said. Meanwhile, a group of human rights lawyers on Saturday urged the ICC to reject the requests to defer its probe. “We ask the ICC not to allow itself to be swayed by the claims now being made by the Duterte administration. These are so contrary to what is happening on the ground and should never be taken at face value,” the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) said in a statement. In his letter requesting a deferral, ambassador Malaya said the Philippine government was investigating the alleged crimes against humanity committed during the drug war. He said the Philippine government “has undertaken, and continues to undertake, thorough investigations of all reported deaths during anti-narcotic operations in the country”. Human Rights Watch dismissed the claim that the Philippines’ existing domestic mechanisms afford citizens justice as “absurd” and an attempt to stave off the ICC probe. “Only 52 out of thousands of killings are in early stages of investigation. Despite many clear-cut cases of murder, no charges have even been filed,” the rights group’s Asia director Brad Adams tweeted Saturday. “The reality is that impunity is the norm under President Duterte, which is why the ICC needs to investigate. Dutch cops fire warning shots vs. virus riots ROTTERDAM—Dutch police fired warning shots, injuring at least two people, after rioters against a partial Covid lockdown torched a police car and hurled stones in Rotterdam on Friday. Chaos broke out after a protest in the port city against the coronavirus restrictions and government plans to restrict access for unvaccinated people to some venues. Dozens of people were arrested and seven people were injured in total, including police

officers, during the night-time rampage on one of Rotterdam’s main shopping streets. Philippine permanent representative to the United Nations Enrique Manalo earlier said the ICC should allow the government to finish the review of drug war cases before conducting the investigation. Duterte was elected in 2016 on a campaign promise to get rid of the Philippines’ drug problem, openly ordering police to kill drug suspects if officers’ lives were in danger. At least 6,181 people have died in more than 200,000 anti-drug operations conducted since July 2016, according to the latest official data released by the Philippines. ICC prosecutors in court papers estimate the figure to be between 12,000 and 30,000 dead. With AFP (See full story online at

Pag-asa has about 300 residents, 151 of which are civilians and 150 workers from the ongoing rehabilitation of the pier and runway. Lacson went to Pag-asa Island, some 225 kilometers away from Ayungin Shoal, to receive updates from the AFP WesCom in his capacity as the incumbent chairman of the Senate Committee on National Defense and Security, Peace, Unification and Reconciliation. The mission was also part of his ongoing commitment to take a deeper look at the West Philippine Sea situation from reliable sources so he could formulate better plans and strategies that would hopefully address recurring territorial disputes across the region. A group of Chinese vessels was spotted in the waters near Pag-asa Island on Saturday morning, GMA News correspondent Jonathan Andal reported on Twitter. Lacson flew to the island from Manila via private plane early morning carrying new Philippine flags, which he planted on the island as a gesture of goodwill to a small community of Filipinos trying to lead quiet lives in that part of Palawan. US, UN to China: Prove tennis star Peng alive & well GENEVA — The United States and the United Nations on Friday demanded proof of Peng Shuai’s whereabouts as concern rises for the tennis star, who has not been seen in public since alleging she was sexually exploited by a former vice-premier of China. Late Friday photos of a smiling Peng emerged on a Chinese state media-affiliated social media account, but their authenticity could not be verified and the user did not respond to AFP’s request for comment. Peng represented China in the Beijing, London and Rio de Janeiro Olympics and won gold for China at the 2010 Asian Games. She is a former Wimbledon and French Open doubles champion. Earlier White House press secretary Jen Psaki had said President Joe Biden’s administration wanted China to “provide independent, verifiable proof” of Peng’s whereabouts and expressed “deep concern” about the former world top-ranked doubles player. The United Nations insisted on a fully transparent investigation into the claims made by Peng against Communist Party grandee Zhang Gaoli -- the first time China’s #MeToo movement has touched the highest echelons of the country’s politics. Peng, 35, alleged on the Chinese social media site Weibo earlier this month that Zhang, now in his 70s, had “forced” her into sex during a long-term on-off relationship. The claims were quickly scrubbed from the Twitter-like platform and Peng has not been seen publicly since. AFP

Germany cancels Christmas markets over COVID fears MUNICH—The German states of Bavaria and Saxony on Friday cancelled all their Christmas markets and unveiled drastic curbs on public life as the country scrambles to contain soaring coronavirus infections. “The situation is very, very serious and difficult,” Markus Soeder, premier of the southern state of Bavaria, said as he also announced a shutdown of clubs, bars and night service at restaurants. The eastern state of Saxony unveiled similar measures and went even further by closing all sporting and cultural venues, banning tourism, public consumption of alcohol and barring the unvaccinated from non-essential shops and hairdressers. Saxony premier Michael Kretschmer -- whose state has Germany’s lowest vaccination rate at just under 60 percent of the population -- admitted that many of the restrictions would affect the vaccinated as well. But he said tough action was needed to keep hospitals from being overwhelmed and called for “solidarity” from all citizens. “We need more ‘we’ and less ‘I’ in this pandemic,” he told reporters. Bavaria and Saxony are among the hardest hit regions in the ferocious fourth Covid wave sweeping Germany. While Germany had a weekly incidence rate of 340.7 recorded infections per 100,000 people on Friday, according to the Robert Koch Institute health agency, the figure was far higher in Saxony (593.6) and Bavaria (625.3). - ‘Health, of course’ The Bavarian state capital of Munich on Tuesday had become the first major German city to cancel its Christmas market for the second year in a row. Saxony’s cancellations means the famed Dresden Christmas market is also scrapped. Germany hosts some 2,500 Christmas markets each year, cherished by visitors who come to savour mulled wine and roasted chestnuts, and shop for seasonal trinkets among clusters of wooden chalets. AFP

The victims, who were church members, were flown to the United States to solicit donations to a non-existent children’s charity, which was allegedly used to fund Quiboloy’s lavish lifestyle. The indictment also alleged that the victims, called “pastorals,” were required to prepare Quiboy’s meals, clean his homes, give him massages and have sex with him during what was called the “night duty.” Guevarra said the DOJ has yet to receive any communication from the US regarding Quiboloy’s indictment. “As of this date, the DOJ has not received any request for extradition from the US DOJ, nor the US state department through the DFA,” he said. Several of the defendants and alleged victims are based in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, the third batch of Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for this month arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Friday, as the latest shipment brings to 13.9 million the total doses of Moderna jabs received by the country. The country's current supply of coronavirus vaccines is more than enough to cover the targeted number of vaccinees and initial recipients of booster shots before the year ends, National Task Force (NTF) Against COVID-19 medical adviser Dr. Teodoro Herbosa said. In a report, Galvez said the InterAgency Task Force on COVID-19 “already decided to provide boosters to our OFWs and seafarers who are about to be deployed within 4 months.” Galvez said the IATF requested the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to make the necessary inclusions and amendments to rules to include migrant workers as priority for booster shots. The government so far allows booster shots to be given those in the top priority sectors: health workers, senior citizens, and those with comorbidities. The rest of the population may be scheduled for boosters later. “We may include the remaining A4, A5 and the General Population starting December or next year when we've reached the threshold of more than 50% [of the population who have] received their second dose,” Galvez said. Three young entrepreneurs—Victoria Kristina Pariña of Likha Studio, Emmanuel Caguimbal of XPERTO and Yuki Higson of Style Cat—have found ways to help their businesses thrive through the pandemic while also helping fellow Filipinos overcome its effects. Young Filipino entrepreneurs show passion amid pandemic solutions for their spaces. “With the limited movements, unforeseen lockdowns and the uncertainty of the future, it was a big risk. We were also uncertain if we were going to get enough projects during the pandemic. But I guess since most of the people have been working from home, they have found the perfect time to finally revamp their spaces,” says Pariña. Although there were times when construction and site visits had to be on hold due to lockdowns, she says they were able to rely on technology to get the job done. The 28-year-old says, “Our suppliers also shifted to online product presentations and online communication. I guess what really saved us is our clients. Their trust in us and their positive reactions after project turnovers is a very humbling experience. It makes us feel like what we’re going on the right track.” They started with small projects like several bathroom renovations until they were referred to bigger companies. “We are grateful to have worked with the local government of Taguig to design their Telemedicine office and lounge in Taguig Pateros District Hospital to cater to their local residents during the pandemic.” They have also worked with Kutis 2000, a facial and skin clinic in Quezon City, for clinic renovation. They have ongoing residential projects and they are also the LEED contractor support for the JP Morgan Chase office project in Taguig and to Arthaland for the ongoing Sevina Park Villas project in Laguna. Potato Corner’s ‘quaranthology’ sparks fun despite hard lockdown

Global Filipino brand Potato Corner produced a quarantine anthology or ‘quaranthology’ for Gen Z-ers during lockdown.

QUARANTINE restrictions may have eased in recent weeks, but memories of hard lockdowns this year remain. Those were the times when brands explored new digital frontiers that made online engagements with their consumers more meaningful and exciting―and these include producing videos as short as 10 seconds. A lot of things can happen in 10 seconds in the frenetic social media universe. US-based digital marketing firm LOCALiQ found in a study that every 10 seconds, users view 578,000 videos on YouTube, upload 40,000 photos on Facebook, share 11,000 photos and videos on Instagram and send 58,300 tweets on Twitter. Datareportal’s October 2021 data show that among the 4.88 billion people who shaped the social media landscape were 89 million Filipino users, who logged in a daily average of four hours and 15 minutes last year. The internet researcher also revealed that 99.4 percent of Filipinos aged 16 to 64 watched online videos. While it takes only three seconds to grab a user’s attention, 10 seconds is enough to hook up anyone to a catchy website, a polished advertisement or a compelling video. Creative challenge Among the brands who rose to this creative challenge was Potato Corner, the “world’s favorite flavored fries,” through its three primary social media platforms with over half a million combined followers. The global Filipino brand created the country’s first-ever digital microvideo series dubbed as a quarantine anthology or “quaranthology,” which captured the interest of its followers for the series’ delightful humor. Titled “Nakaka—!,” Potato Corner’s pioneering craft ingeniously fused the techniques of story-driven filmmaking with the visually arresting aspects of digital advertising. Potato Corner thought not only of entertaining its market as the leading French fries franchise in the country, but was also aiming to drive in a novel way consumer enthusiasm for the food industry. Keeping in mind the 40 million Gen Z-ers burning the net for 10 hours each day, Potato Corner featured five siblings craving for tasty flavors in each 10-second micro-story of the 10-episode quaranthology. ‘Microseries’ Fast-paced and energetic, the pioneering microseries or “shortserye” depicted funny moments that brothers and sisters go through while locked down at home. The rollercoaster of emotions was captured in the episodes’ themes: nakaka$#@&%!, nakakagutom, nakakatuwa, nakakayamot, nakaka-excite, nakakakilig, nakakainip, nakaka-hyper, nakaka@$#&! and Yes! Nakapag-Potato Corner na! The homegrown “better with flavor” fries and its creative partner The Jumpcat Experiment tapped five digital celebrities for these engaging shorts. They were Kumu livestreamer, actor, model and host CJ Reyes; music vlogger and Rouge drummer Gyan Murriel; TikToker Carol Reyes; online game streamer Cher “Cherizawa” Barnacha; and social media artist Steven Ocampo. Observing health and safety protocols, the production team led by film director Joan Lopez-Flores worked online on the concept and preproduction and casting work.

students, with the addition of end-to-end services, including registration, payment collection, virtual event platform setup and certification. For his startup, 34-year-old Emmanuel Caguimbal draws from his own frustrating experience in attending conferences that started late or were delayed because of registration issues, technical glitches or inadequate staffing. “Instead of having an enjoyable time where I could’ve gained additional knowledge or furthered my professional growth, I was instead left with the memory of an undesirable experience I’d rather soon forget,” he says. :It dawned on me that these problems occur because planning and managing professional development events, like seminars and conferences, become a challenge for professional societies because of limited manpower and lack of technology. And these limitations hinder them from effectively managing programs and events that require a lot of administrative work,” says Caguimbal. They have thrived during the pandemic, given that the lockdowns and other health protocols forced professional societies and organizations to go virtual and use videoconferencing apps for meetings and conferences. There was an increase in the number of organizations who are encouraged to embrace digital transformation and this gave the opportunity for XPERTO to do well. Caguimbal reveals that despite their earlier financial challenges, they have built their customer base and proven the viability of their company which has garnered support from startup incubators and won a number of grants along the way. His five-member core team of Sam Beljon Catapusan, John Bibal III, Ginwene Rueda and Czarina Vijulet Jusi caters primarily to the professional societies and organizations, especially the organizations of professions regulated by the Philippine Regulatory Commission such as the different engineering organizations in the Philippines. The Sewing Room is a local garment manufacturing factory for RTW, swimwear and lounge wear. Creative entrepreneur Yuki Higson established her business in 2009, making handmade accessories to sell to her college block mates. When the pandemic began, she founded The Sewing Room, which employs highly-skilled sewers who were displaced from their jobs. The 29-year-old says her business not only provides employment for her 10 seamstresses, they help other MSMEs as well, because their low minimum order quantity offers locally-made garments for online businesses and local brands. She says, “At first, it was difficult to build our customer base since we hurriedly set up our business to give livelihood, but we’re happy to have built a pool of regular clients, mostly online brands that also started during this pandemic. We have helped our clients to comfortably build their business from home. Our team of seamstresses can provide them with quality clothing, ranging from swimwear to RTW,” says Higson. RESILIENCY The three millennial entrepreneurs harness their strengths and draw on their resilience to grow their businesses. They also say that strong networking skills have enabled them to spread the word about their products and services. Parina and Caguimbal are members of BNI Philippines, which helps them connect with likeminded individuals at their regular meetings. Caguimbal shares these tips for those who are looking to jumsptart their entrepreneurship journey. “Do not be afraid to take risks, but at the same time, before you do, make sure that you have all the information you need at your disposal so that you can make informed decisions. Also, continue to be engaged in a culture of learning. A perfect plan is no good if no one executes it.”

Higson adds, “Go for it! Never let other opinions dampen your spirit.” For her part, Pariña says, “Do it and trust yourself. At first, I had doubts and hesitations when my partner encouraged me to put up our own business. But I think being afraid is sometimes a good thing. Those fears, they’re good to have because they push you and they make you assess yourself and your actions. You wouldn’t know what you’re capable of unless you try.”

Tagaytay Highlands gets ready for holidays IT’S BEGINNING to look a lot like Christmas at Tagaytay Highlands, as the development prepares for the most wonderful time of the year. While precautionary measures remain in place in the mountain resort community, it has its holiday agenda all mapped out to ensure that residents’ celebrations will come about. Tagaytay Highlands is jump-starting its festivities with a solemn observation of Christmas activities. It has lined up regular masses for the faithful, including those on all four Sundays of Advent—Nov. 28, Dec. 5, 12 and 19—and for Sunday mass on Jan. 2, 2022. Tradition-bound families can flock to the Highlands’ Simbang Gabi masses, which will take place at 5 to 6 p.m., from Dec. 15 to 23. These will be followed by three Christmas Eve masses on Dec. 24 at 5:30 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Holy masses will also be celebrated across all major Christmas holidays: Christmas Day (Dec. 25), the Feast of the Holy Family (Dec. 26) and New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31). On Jan. 1, 2022, there will be masses for New Year’s Day at the Holy Family Chapel and for the Feast of Madre de Dios at the Madre de Dios Chapel Midlands. While large gatherings are still deemed unsafe, Tagaytay Highlands carefully crafted fun and festive events for residents and guests. These include the lighting of the Christmas Tree at The Gardens on Dec. 4 as well as acoustic bands at Clubhouses on Dec. 24 and 31; and a New Year’s countdown and pyrotechnics display at the Highlands China Palace Lower Parking Lot. Beyond these festivities, there are other reasons why homeowners are heading for Tagaytay Highlands on the long holiday break: the scent of pine wafting in the nippy mountain air; the stunning vista of Taal Lake shimmering in the distance; and the grand naturescape surrounding the mountain log cabins, beautiful modern homes and the farming estates in the exclusive community. Residents of the community may indulge in undisrupted bonding with family and friends and get together over drinks and fine cuisine at the cluster of famed restaurants nearby. Each property purchase at Tagaytay Highlands gives residents exclusive access to world-class amenities that include golf courses, sports facilities and specialty dining places, all within reach.

On Christmas Eve, one can come home – safely – to Tagaytay Highlands where members of the closeknit Highlands community can huddle together and find love and warmth on a cold December morning.

First-timer Michelle Matias completes her first full marathon.

IGHT extraordinary Filipino runners defied all odds of the pandemic and conquered the virtual running stage at the recently-concluded TCS New York City Marathon.

Made possible by New Balance Philippines, the event’s official apparel partner, eight homegrown running enthusiasts saw action in the virtual category where they represented the country and competed against a global community of runners in the world’s most prestigious running event. Michelle Matias, Carla Piscoso, Beef Co, Anton Sietereales, Vincent De Guzman, Christian Servillas, Bel Castro and Lucille Bunagan are the contenders who were selected to represent the country in the Run for The Medal Category, the 42KM virtual category of the event. Each participant of the virtual Run for the Medal Category was given a chance to complete the full marathon anywhere, within the two-week timeline—from Oct. 23 to Nov. 7. You have truly shown us what it takes to rise above the challenge.” Challenge Accepted Two distinct individuals made exemplary displays of hope and inspiration as they entered their maiden 42KM race at the New York City Marathon. Matias, a full-time mom and part-time writer of the popular running website TAKBO.PH admitted that getting into a stringent regimen is a whole new territory for her. The rigorous training she had over the past months was a challenge in itself, and it was the driving factor that enabled her to push her limits. Sharing her experience from her first-ever 42KM race, Matias said, “It is such a great honor to finish my first-ever 42KM race in no less than the New York City Marathon. Running virtually has its own challenges but there is no better time for me to take on this new milestone than now. New Balance Philippines has given me a solid ground to push my limits from the

Malabanan, PetroGazz log ‘firsts’ in inaugural Champions League

LIPA City—Jerrili Malabanan scored the first point and PetroGazz booked the first victory over national play first-timers Baguio City Highlanders, 25-10, 25-13, 25-10, in the first-ever Philippine Champions League that kicked off at the Aquamarine Recreational Center on Saturday morning. Malabanan, playing out of Far Eastern University, got the ball rolling in the Philippine National Volleyball Federation’s (PNVF) first major offering amid the still prevailing COVID-19 pandemic off a well-orchestrated set from Chie Saet. The historic first point may have played out as one of those pre-pandemic days in the office for the Angels’ 5-foot-8 outside spiker, but it would be etched in stone for the PNVF which set up the bubble tournament—the first major multi-day national event by any national sports association. “We serve volleyball and with this Champions League, we serve sports,” PNVF President Ramon “Tats” Suzara said. I

N OUR family, we have this belief that when our pets die a sudden and inexplicable death, it only means that it was trying to save its owner’s life by trading its own. When you come to think of it, the thought is heartbreaking but very heroic for these animals to be doing so. If it was true. I tried to research about this belief--why we have such a belief, where it came from. Unfortunately, no one in the family knows how we came about to have it. I tried to google origins of beliefs on animals’ deaths but all I see are old superstitions of good and bad luck with different animals and more on how human owners can cope with the death of a pet. Not really what I was looking for. Ever since I was born up until when I reached highs chool, there was hardly a day I remember that I did not have an attack of excrutiating pain in my tummy area. My parents, grandparents, and Titas (Aunts) and Titos (Uncles) were all puzzled because even the doctors could not really find out what was wrong with me back then. But it was obvious that I was very sickly. I remember one tremendous attack when I was in first year high school. It was in school. I was taken to the hospital but I was not admitted. They just sent me home after being given medications for the pain. But the pain continued when I got back home and it got worse. I could not sleep. I felt so tired but I could not rest because of the pain. I could not eat because I tend to vomit it all out. It felt like I was dying. Then, I just passed out. When I woke up the next day, I was ok. But one of our pets was not. When I was just a little girl, we had many pets. We had seven dogs, 13 cats, two rabbits, a pig, seven turkeys, and three ducks. Yes, that many. But each of us had his or her own favorite pet or pets. It means, one can have more than one favorite pet he or she can claim. I had two male cats for my favorites. One was named Flipper, a domestic short-haired and the other was Baron, a Siamese. I am a cat person, you see. When I was in high school, I could not understand why Baron died for no reason. He was a very big and very healthy Siamese cat. My family told me that he traded his life for mine. At that time, I could not really take that well in my mind. I refused to. When we were kids, there was this one New year’s eve celebration where my brother nearly lost his ear and, perhaps, could have even lost his life due to a lit five star firework in his hand that he did not notice while he was covering his ear. We all shouted when we saw it and, fortunately, he got to

A LESSON FROM PETS:

Lose Well Santa Krauss gives Ate Tani a kiss. Krauss was rescued by Save Animals of Love and Light (Save ALL Inc.) in 2015 from being put to sleep due to aggression. Krauss has recently been diagnosed with cancer and is now being provided all the supplements and good diet that is free of sugar, dairy and fat to hopefully prevent a new tumor from growing in his body. A malignant tumor was removed from his body in August. Please include him in your prayers, and claim more years of radiant health and happy life for this sweet furbaby. - Editor

A Merry and Very Safe

Holiday for Pets By Pet Food Institute AS FILIPINOS gear up for the yuletide season, pet owners must also ensure a merry and safe holiday season for their pets. Filipino pet owners should include their beloved four-legged companions in their preparations so that their pets can be part of the festivities while ensuring their safety from the dangers that the holiday brings. Here are tips on how pet owners can keep their pets safe during the holidays. Yssa, a beautiful rescued dog of Save Animals of Love and Light (Save ALL), crossed the rainbow bridge when cases of covid infection was on the rise last year. Could she have saved family members and caretakers at a time we were all enveloped in too much negative energy and emotions such as fear and anxiety? - Editor

throw it away from himself in time. A few days after, his dog, Jacky, became gravely ill and in a matter of minutes, Jacky was gone. Again, our grandma told us that Jacky was trading his life for my brother’s. When I got older and I had my own family, I was surprised to know that it was not just my family who had this belief. A number of farmers I know also believed the same thing about their pets. My daughter Yumi was just a year old when my husband, Jayjay, brought home with him a Kalaw (Hornbill). He said it was a gift from a friend of ours. It was truly beautiful with its big hornshaped beak. It was a mature male bird, so, it was already more than two feet in height, taller than my daughter at that time. Its wing span was more or less, if I’m not mistaken, four feet. He was magnificent! We named him Julius. Julius loved sliced tomatoes and other juicy fruits just like it. Yumi loved feeding him because it was really amazing and amusing watching him take the sliced fruit off your hand with his big beak and he would swallow the pieces as he turns his beak upward. For months, we tried to train him little by little -- because we planned to free him one day-- that with his training, he would know that he has a home here with us where he can always come back to us even if he could fly free in the open. But as Yumi was reaching

two and a half years old, the greatest tragedy of my family happened. My husband who brought in Julius was abducted. His being an activist was the reason why he was taken and made a victim of enforced disappearance. Three days after he was taken, while we were desperately searching for my husband, we learned that Julius suddenly died. And once again, one of our farmers told me that Julius was trying to save my husband’s life. True enough, when we tried calling his cellphone, we were still able to talk to him though it was very short and it sounded like he was groggy and tired. We assumed his abductors were giving him a hard time. But it was clear he was still alive. That was enough for us push on with the search and not to give up. My husband remains missing to this day. But that’s another story to tell. Last All Souls Day, I got to listen to this wonderful homily of Fr. Mike Schmitz. He talked about how life is the process of losing. Life is the process of repeated loss. Because nothing is permanent in this life. And reading back on what I’ve written above, I would agree with him on that. I keep losing things and beings that I love. We all do. But he also said that we were taught by Jesus Christ, by God Himself, how to learn this process of losing: we should lose well. Meaning, to lose and not become bitter. To lose and not become resentful. To lose well means to lose and not lose yourself. To lose and still be able to love. He said that God is telling us to love Him with all that is left of ourselves. That even if we have lost everything we have, we could still say we love Him. We could still say, “Lord, I trust in You that all is well and that I will still love everything about this life.” Now, if you think of it intently, Jesus, the Son of God, gave His life for us. He gave His “everything” to save us. Isn’t that just the same as what pets do based on the belief that our pets save us? They give their lives for us. They trade their lives for us, their owners, so that we could live. The thought is heartbreaking, right, for our pets to trade their lives for us? Do you feel the same for what Jesus did for us? Jesus told us that having offered up His life for us, we should make good use of it so we don’t let it go to waste. I think our departed pets would want to tell us the same thing. We should not let their sacrifice go to waste. Let us live our life well, in every moment. Whether that belief on pets’ deaths is true or not, I choose to believe it to be true. And I think I know now where that belief comes from. They say black cats are unlucky but cats of whatever color are said to absorb negative energy that transforms into an illness. Those who work with energy will tell you cats remove negative energy from a place, specially black cats. Our black, blind, senior Felix died at a time a Save ALL admin was fighting cancer. Did he extend her life? We want to believe that. - Editor

Treats

Food is a big part of Christmas celebration, especially for Filipinos. Every year, families would prepare big meals to celebrate the occasion and this year will not be different albeit in a smaller scale. For families who will have a feast this season, they are reminded to properly discard their leftovers which may contain high levels of fat and sugar to prevent their pets from consuming these unhealthy foods. Owners who are planning to give their pets treats for Christmas should remember to properly read the label and check with their veterinarian if said treats are healthy for their pets. Raw hides are a common gift to pets around this season, but should be given with caution. These popular treats may cause choking and digestive obstructions to pets which can eventually lead to severe complications. It is imperative that pets get a well-balanced diet despite the festivities. A well-balanced diet provides pets their nutritional needs which must be at the forefront of their daily intake –whether the holidays or just a regular day – to ensure their overall well-being. Coupling this with daily exercise will help prevent obesity, diabetes, and other serious health issues for pets.

Pepper, the black dachshund, and rescued dog Mags of Save ALL enjoy their Christmas costumes. They are given treats with no preservatives, sugar and salt. Most fo their food are natural food like boiled vegetables and meat. - Editor

Decorations

Majority of Filipino households are now adorned with colorful Christmas lights and massive Christmas trees. Though these are usually harmless, pet owners should still take precautionary steps to ensure their pet’s safety around these decorations. Christmas trees must be securely anchored to the floor to avoid pets from knocking these over and getting serious injuries. Pet owners may nail or screw the base of their trees to the floor to avoid any untoward collisions between their pet and their tree. Christmas lights, although a wonderful addition to brighten the household, can also be a hazardous ornament piece. Though these lights are often placed somewhere high where pets cannot reach them, the wires of these may cause pets to trip or even electrocute them. Small loose bulbs may also cause gastrointestinal problems to pets if ingested. To avoid these incidents, pet owners should securely fasten and tuck cords and wires away from their pet’s reach.
