T
HE Philippines on Saturday set a new record-high of active cases at 203,710 as it logged 11,101 new infections of COVID-19.
AUTHORITIES have seized some 200 tons of illegally harvested giant clam shells worth nearly $25 million in one of the biggest known operations of its kind in the country. The Coast Guard said four suspects were arrested on the remote Green Island in the Sulu Sea that turned up the largest ever giant clam shell haul by law enforcers in the area. “Taking the giant clams from their natural habitat is a form of inter-generational crime,” Jovic Fabello, spokesman for the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development told AFP. “It will permanently affect the marine ecosystem and future generations will be deprived of the benefits accruing from it,” he added. He said the seized shells included those of the Tridacna gigas, the world’s largest clam. Growing up to 1.3 meters wide and weighing up to 250 kilogram, these host marine algae which are a basic food source for many of the fish species consumed by humans. Conservationists say giant clam shells are used as an alternative material for products ranging from earrings to chandeliers as ivory becomes scarce. Fabello said the illegal trade in giant clams has been growing in Palawan and several other areas of the Philippines in the past three years. Killing endangered species is punishable by up to 12 years in prison and fines of up to a million pesos under the country’s wildlife protection act. “These people are digging up giant clams and killing them,” Fabello alleged. The active cases, which stood at more than a fifth of the total number of infections, was considered a record-high not only in the country but also in Southeast Asia since the pandemic began over a year ago. Of the active cases, 96 percent were mild, 2.9 percent asymptomatic, 0.4 percent critical, 0.5 percent severe, and 0.29 percent moderate. A total of 799 patients recently recovered, bringing the total recoveries to 706,532, while 72 new fatalities were logged. OCTA research fellow Butch Ong said while the reproduction rate for Metro Manila has been reduced to 1.16 from 1.9 in the past two weeks, it can still be lowered further even with looser quarantine protocols. Ong said there is still one more week under the Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine level to bring down the reproduction rate to below 1. “We see the reproduction rate slowing down under MECQ. We will know by the middle of next week if we could hit our target (of lower than 1),” he said. VP under quarantine Vice President Leni Robredo will go on quarantine after she was exposed to a close-in security who tested positive for COVID-19. “I was with him in the car, in the elevator, and in the office almost every day this week,” said Robredo in a Facebook post.

“We have regular surveillance antigen testing in the office, and we do follow very strict health protocols but because I was a very close contact, I need to do the required quarantine and do an RT-PCR test after my quarantine,” the Vice President added. Non-operational hotels as quarantine facilities Deputy Majority Leader and Quezon City Rep. Jesus Suntay has filed a resolution urging the President to repurpose non-operational hotels into quarantine facilities for COVID-19 patients with mild symptoms. “The repurposing of the hotels and other accommodation facilities as alternative health facilities can contribute in mitigating the effects of the pandemic in
the industry. The rates chargeable by accommodation establishments to persons undergoing quarantine may be regulated by the [Department of Tourism],” Suntay said. On Thursday, President Rodrigo Duterte said he has the option to use the state’s police powers to take over hotels to increase the available beds for those who contracted the virus but added that “it is not a remedy desired in a democratic state.” P800m in unpaid hotel charges The Office of the Civil Defense on Saturday said it has yet to pay P800 million owed to 18 hotels that were converted into COVID-19 quarantine facilities. OCD administrator Ricardo Jalad said it is now processing the release of the
payment to the hotels that were tapped as part of the Oplan Kalinga of the National Task Force against COVID-19. “We ask the hotels’ management to be patient. We are just finishing the documentation. We have funds allocated to the OCD for this,” Jalad said. Aliens with entry exemption may enter PH Foreigners who were given entry exemption document prior to the implementation of last month’s travel ban may now enter the Philippines, the Bureau of Immigration said. BI Commissioner Jaime Morente said aliens with entry exemption documents issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs before March 22 are now allowed to enter the country.

Cayetano: Adopt COVID rescue plan HOUSE Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano has urged the national government to adopt a comprehensive and transformative roadmap that would support the country’s medical approach against the COVID-19 pandemic. Cayetano said while the medical approach was important, Filipinos were also worried about not having enough money to buy food and other basic necessities. “The medical approach, which includes getting vaccinated, observing minimum health protocols, and having enough food and rest, is important. But it’s easy to say that you’re eating and sleeping well when you can afford it. So it’s important that we also look at the economy,” said Cayetano. Last year, the country saw its worst economic contraction since the Second World War. Meanwhile, inflation hit a two-year high in February as the prices of basic goods skyrocketed early this year. Cayetano said an economic roadmap should contain national and local priorities, as well as a timeline for its implementation. The lawmaker cited the American Rescue Plan, an economic stimulus package enacted by the United States Congress early this year. The measure has allocated funding to address unemployment, expand employee benefits, expand tax credits, support businesses and schools, support housing programs, and reinforce the US healthcare system. Cayetano said having an economic roadmap will help boost investor confidence in the country as well as in its local government units. “We need to have a plan. We need to be proactive. Once the government offers a plan, the investments will come in, so long as the situation is predictable,” Cayetano said. Maricel V. Cruz
Foreign terrorist, 2 ASG killed in Sulu—military T
HREE alleged terrorists, including an Egyptian national, were killed during a night clash Friday in Sulu with soldiers, the Western Mindanao Command said in a statement. Wesmincom commander Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan Jr. identified the foreigner as “Yusop” -- one of five remaining foreign terrorists monitored by security authorities in Sulu. “He is the stepson of Abduramil, an Egyptian national who was neutralized by the military in Indanan, Sulu last November 2019, and son of Reda Mohammad Mahmud, a.k.a. Sitti Aiza, an Egyptian national who perpetrated a suicide bombing attack at the KM3 Detachment in Indanan in September 2019,” said Vinluan. The two slain ASG gunmen were
identified as Abu Khattab Jundullah, alias Saddam, brother of the late Daulah Islamiyah/Abu Sayyaf Group member Midi Alih who was killed in Sulare Island; and one Akram, one of the trusted followers of Mundi. Saddam was also known as one of the trained bomb-makers in Sulu and Basilan along with Mundi Sawadjaan. The military said the 4th Light Reaction Company was operating in Barangay Igasan in Patikul at around 10:45 p.m. when they encountered several ASG gunmen, precipitating a 10-minute firefight.
“Reinforcements were immediately deployed to conduct blocking and pursuit operations in the possible enemy withdrawal routes,” said Col. Benjamin Batara, Commander of the 1102nd Infantry Brigade. The bodies of the slain ASG men were recovered from the encounter site, and they were brought to Kuta Heneral Teodulfo Bautista for proper disposition. Also recovered were an M653 carbine, an M203 grenade launcher, and an R4 rifle; nine steel magazines -eight long and one short; 85 rounds of M16 ammunition; an M203 grenade round; two bandoliers; and personal belongings. From January 2021 to date, the Philippine military has neutralized 70 ASG members; seven were apprehended, 60 surrendered, and three were killed.

A LEADER of the House of Representatives pushed Saturday for the enactment of a bill establishing a national monument to be called “Bantayog ng mga Bayaning Frontliners” to recognize the heroism of frontliners of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Manila Rep. Manuel Luis Lopez, chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Metro Manila Development, said his House Bill 9159 or the proposed “Frontliners Recognition Act” also sought to declare a “National Day of Mourning or Remembrance” for fallen COVID-19 frontliners. “As we face a continuous surge of COVID-19 infections and almost all of our hospitals in the National Capital Region once again declare full capacity, our frontline workers, both medical and non-medical, have not stopped working tirelessly, selflessly, and valiantly in the service of their countrymen despite the clear and imminent dangers to their own health and safety,” Lopez said. “It is in this time, now more than ever, that we should recognize the courage, hard work, sacrifice, and invaluable contribution of our Frontline Heroes,” he added. Lopez said the bill shall serve as a memorial for the heroism of all “frontline heroes.” He proposed in the bill that the national monument will be inaugurated during the National Day of Mourning and Remembrance for COVID-19 Frontliners, a special working holiday. Under the bill, a committee shall be created to formulate guidelines for the nomination and selection of Frontline Heroes whose names will be engraved in the Bantayog. A scholarship and financial assistance grant will also be provided to the children of the Frontline Heroes in any State Schools, Colleges or Universities, the bill provides.

THE Commission on Human Rights on Saturday called for compliance with Human Rights-Based Approaches “as part of sustainable development efforts in the utilization of natural resources.” CHR spokesperson Jacqueline Ann de Guia issued the statement in light of President Rodrigo Duterte’s Executive Order 130 lifting the moratorium on new mineral agreements in the Philippines. “Such includes ensuring that the Philippine government guarantees the absolute participation of the Filipino people in making decisions on the exploration, development, and utilization of natural resources, such as minerals,” de Guia said. “It is then equally important that relevant laws and regulations are observed and are faithfully implemented based on their spirit and letters— including the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act; the Local Government Code; and on Environmental Impact Assessment, even the crafting of new ones if needed—to adequately protect and promote the standard of living, and all human rights, of communities affected by mining operations,” she added. De Guia also stressed the generation of revenues from mining through taxation and other means should eventually be translated into programmes, which should also be developed and implemented with the meaningful participation of the said communities. “We equally expect the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to put in place additional rules and processes to enhance environmental safeguards in the course of mining activities as mandated in the said EO lifting the mining moratorium,” she said. “ In addition, the CHR expects that its partner agencies would already fully operationalise the standards of monitoring human rights compliance in the mining industry,” de Guia, a lawyer, added. President Rodrigo Duterte has lifted a moratorium on new mineral agreements, allowing the government to enter into new mineral agreements, provided that these would comply with the country’s mining laws, Malacanang said. Queen Elizabeth II to bury her ‘strength and stay’ Prince Philip QUEEN Elizabeth II bids a final farewell to her late husband Prince Philip on Saturday, at a funeral restricted by coronavirus rules but reflecting his long life of military and public service. The ceremony with just 30 mourners behind the stately walls of Windsor Castle, west of London, will be watched by an expected television audience of millions, with the public urged to stay away because of the pandemic. But people were still expected to turn out in Windsor, prompting barriers to be erected along the sweeping Long Walk to the castle gates patrolled by uniformed police.
In the town, one man who gave only his first name, Mark, told AFP: “There are hundreds of us today. People are not supposed to come. But this is a once-ina-generation event. He (Philip) was really something.” At Buckingham Palace, the Queen’s central London home, Cardiff-born chef Santosh Singh laid purple tulips as a tribute and to mark the end of an era. “I love the royals. I think they’re amazing... It’s sad because in time, all this will change,” the 57-year-old said. The Duke of Edinburgh – described by royals as “the grandfather of the nation” – died on April 9, aged 99, just weeks after
spending more than a month in hospital for treatment of a heart condition and an infection. Britain’s longest-serving royal consort was an almost constant presence at the Queen’s side during her record-breaking reign that began in 1952 as Britain rebuilt from World War II and as its global empire began to unravel. His death, after 73 years of marriage, has left a “huge void” in her life, the couple’s second son, Prince Andrew, said last weekend. The Queen released a touching personal photograph of herself with Prince Philip, both looking relaxed and smiling
in the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland in 2003. Images of key moments in the couple’s marriage were also shared on the royal family’s social media accounts, as most newspapers reflected on her deep personal loss. “The Queen bids farewell,” headlined The Times. At the service, the Dean of Windsor, David Conner, will pay tribute to Philip’s “unwavering loyalty” to his wife, who turns 95 next week, the country and the Commonwealth, as well as his “courage, fortitude and faith.” Government COVID-19 regulations
have forced hasty revisions to “Operation Forth Bridge,” the long-rehearsed funeral plans for former Royal Navy commander Philip. But the stripped-back ceremonial funeral will still feature members of the armed services he was associated with lining a short procession route through the immaculately trimmed grounds of the castle, whose history dates back 1,000 years. At 11:00 am (10:00 GMT), a military bearer party moved his coffin from the castle’s private chapel in preparation for it to be taken to St George’s Chapel at 2:45 pm on a bespoke Land Rover hearse which Philip designed himself. US, Japan show united front on China
T
HE United States and Japan vowed to stand firm together against an assertive China and to step up cooperation on climate change and nextgeneration technology as President Joe Biden made his first summit a show of alliance unity. Waiting nearly three months for his first foreign guest due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Biden told Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga that Japan enjoyed “our iron-clad support” on security issues and beyond. “We’re going to work together to prove that democracies can still compete and win in the 21st century,” Biden, affectionately calling the Japanese leader “Yoshi,” told a socially distanced news conference in the White House Rose Garden. A joint statement called for “candid conversations” with China and did not hold back, raising concerns over Beijing’s growing maritime moves, its clampdowns in Hong Kong and Xinjiang and growing tension over Taiwan. The statement reiterated that the US-Japan Security Treaty covers the Japanese-administered Senkaku islands – one of several areas in the region where Beijing, which calls them the Diaoyu, has increasingly shown its might. The United States and Japan “recognize the importance of deterrence to maintain peace and stability in the region,” the statement said. “We oppose any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the East China Sea,” it said, in a line highlighted by Suga. As Beijing steps up air incursions in Taiwan, Biden and Suga in the statement emphasized “the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait” and encouraged “the peaceful resolution of cross-Strait issues.” While cautiously worded, it was the first time a Japanese leader has joined a US president in a statement on Taiwan since the allies separately switched recognition from Taipei to Beijing in the 1970s. COVID lockdown empties Delhi streets amid deadly surge NEW Delhi led major cities across India into a weekend lockdown Saturday as the country confronts a fierce new coronavirus wave, with more than 230,000 fresh daily cases and families clamoring for drugs and hospital beds. Hopes that South Asia might have beaten the pandemic have been dashed with India seeing over two million new cases this month alone and Bangladesh and Pakistan also imposing shutdowns. India added another record 234,000 cases Saturday to pass 14.5 million overall and 1,341 deaths took its pandemic total to 175,649 deaths. The per-capita rates remain low by international comparison, but the speed

CIA planned to assassinate Raul Castro in 1960: declassified documents THE CIA made its first known attempt to assassinate a leader of the Cuban revolution in 1960, offering $10,000 to a pilot flying Raul Castro from Prague to Havana to arrange an “accident,” according to declassified documents published Friday. Pilot Jose Raul Martinez, who had been recruited by the CIA, asked for – and received – assurance from the agency that it would provide university educations to his two sons if he died during the operation, according to the documents published by the Washington-based National Security Archive research institute. After Martinez left for Prague, CIA headquarters in the United States told its Havana station to cancel the mission.
“Do not pursue,” the cable said. “Would like to drop matter.” At that point, the pilot was already out of contact. When he returned to Cuba, Martinez told his handler that “he had no opportunity to arrange an accident such as we had discussed.” The plot came to light as Castro, the 89-year-old brother of late revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, prepares to leave Cuban politics by stepping down as head of the all-powerful Community Party of Cuba. Raul’s departure ends a near six-decade family hold on power in Cuba that started in 1959. The reins will now pass to 60-year-old Miguel Diaz-Canel, who has served as Cuba’s president since 2018. AFP
at which cases are rising led the international Red Cross to call the South Asian surge “truly frightening.” India now has three times the daily cases of the United States, the world’s worst-hit country. After a national lockdown a year ago led to an economic slump, the Indian government is desperate to avoid a second stoppage. But Delhi joined Mumbai in ordering all but essential services to close. Landmarks such as the historic Red Fort where tens of thousands of people would normally gather were deserted. “Not one person has turned up,” said security guard Anil Dayan. Police
checked many of the cars that strayed onto the streets. The city of more than 20 million people now has the most daily cases in India and restaurants, malls and gyms were all closed. Weddings can go ahead with guests limited to 50 people, while only 20 can attend funerals. “Don’t panic. All essential services will be available through the weekend,” Delhi’s chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said. Maharashtra, which includes Mumbai, Gujarat and IT hub Bangalore’s home state Karnataka have also imposed restrictions on movement. Uttar Pradesh state, home to some 240 million people, has ordered a one-
day lockdown on Sunday. Similarly, the northern state of Uttarakhand has restricted gatherings to 200 people – but exempted the huge Hindu Kumbh Mela festival. The gathering in Haridwar has attracted up to 25 million people since January, including some 4.6 million this week alone, with most people ignoring COVID-19 guidelines. More than 1,600 people tested positive for coronavirus in Haridwar in barely three days this week and experts fear that many devotees will take the virus back to their hometowns and villages. AFP
Myanmar’s junta releases 23,000 prisoners in New Year’s amnesty THE junta is planning to release more than 23,000 prisoners nationwide, an official said Saturday, even as the military continues to detain and issue arrest warrants for anti-coup dissidents. Myanmar typically grants an annual amnesty to thousands of prisoners to mark its traditional Buddhist New Year holiday – which in previous years have been joyous affairs with city-wide water fights. But this year, with the military back in power after ousting civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, anti-coup activists have used the holiday as an opportunity to protest the growing death toll and mass arrests. It remains unclear whether anti-junta protesters or journalists jailed covering the coup will be among those freed. A prison official told AFP on condition of anonymity that jails across the country will start freeing more than 23,000 people on Saturday. “We will release more than 800 prisoners from Insein prison” in commercial hub Yangon, he added, declining to elaborate. In February, the junta released a similar number of prisoners, with some rights groups at the time fearing the move was to free up space for opponents of the military as well as cause chaos in communities. Maricar keeps cake business operational through Lalamove
T
HE COVID-19 pandemic has affected the nation for more than a year, and a lot of brick-and-mortar businesses suffered since then.
While many entrepreneurs held back to adapt, most of them thrived in the digital space. Maricar Reyes shares her experience in keeping Maricar’s Chocolate Cakes up and running amid the pandemic with Lalamove as delivery partner. Hootsuite and We Are Social revealed that 64 percent of Filipino internet users are spending more time on social media, with 23 percent indicating increased activity in online shopping. With consumers opting to purchase items online, digitalization was embraced by many entrepreneurs and the importance of thirdparty courier services strengthened even further. Maricar has been serving delectable cakes in gold tin cans since 2015. He moist chocolate cakes
have been the craze since its launch. Over the years, they came up with two more cake variants—coffee and ube-cheese, served in smaller jars. Fast forward to 2020, the pandemic restrictions rendered the nation immobilized and this made Maricar concerned for her business. “Prior to ECQ, majority of our customers preferred visiting our physical stores and booths at bazaars. We needed to shift the way we did things in order to keep everyone safe, and reach our customers who are now staying home” says Maricar. With this in mind, Maricar’s Chocolate Cakes persevered to keep loyal customers. They chose to rely on business partners to remain operational, one of which is Lalamove. Maricar Reyes trusted Lalamove even before the pandemic because of their convenience and tested reliability. “Lalamove was our courier of choice since 2018, not just for our cakes, but for pick-up and delivery of other items needed for business,”
says Maricar. “They are also the courier we suggest to our customers for their cake pickups. I find their app simple and easy to use. Delivery fees are distance-based so the prices are more stable, compared to other couriers. The frequent discount vouchers are a happy bonus, too,” she says. Every business will eventually have to make the transition to the digital space to keep up with the trying times. It is safe to say that Maricar’s Chocolate Cakes will continue to make people feel special with the help of Lalamove. Launched in the Philippines in 2017, Lalamove is an on-demand logistics company that matches drivers with customers and SME businesses to fulfil same-day deliveries. Its mission of making local deliveries faster and simpler is achieved through innovations such as instant order matching, real-time GPS vehicle tracking, 24/7 services and a driver rating system.

Ripple8 managing partner Michelle Ople
Ripple8 names former TV journalist as managing partner INTEGRATED PR solutions agency Ripple8 announced the promotion of Michelle Ople to managing partner. Joining Ripple8 nearly four years ago as media relations and activations director and concurrently serving as such, Ople is a familiar name in the quad media of TV, radio, print and online. Her many years as a journalist proved instrumental in continuing to build relationships with Ripple8’s media partners and clients at a time of shelved campaigns and curtailed budgets since the pandemic started in 2020. Ople also plays an important role in Ripple8’s crisis management team where she helps assess and manage issues with immediate, data-based recommendations and media intelligence. More recently, Ople helped expand Ripple8’s media coverage to the international community for the Department of Tourism, helping build strategies to keep the country’s tourism sector relevant to targeted emerging markets. This, despite the current lull in leisure travel, is made possible through strategic relationship-building initiatives, and innovative visits using virtual technology and other efforts. “Mich has been an integral part of Ripple8’s strategic growth and continued success by fortifying our relationships with media to the extent that what we have with them are no longer transactional, but rather personal—almost familial—relations. And this benefits not just us, but our clients,” said Ripple8 head and managing director Bobby Vito. “This promotion is merely a formality. In the years that I’ve worked with her, she has acted like a partner long before she received the title,” he said. The public relations arm of DDB Group Philippines, Ripple8 is one of the most sought-after PR firms in the country, with a clientele that includes energy and water utilities, telecom, QSRs, consumer staples, beverages, mass transportation, airlines, healthcare, banking and finance, resorts and hotels, government agencies, and the Miss Universe Organization.

Investors seeking more Asia Pacific hotel assets in 2021
NVESTORS are confident in the longterm future of the Asia Pacific hotels market despite ongoing COVID-19 pressure on the tourism and hospitality sectors, said real estate consultancy firm JLL.
According to investors surveyed by JLL, approximately 70% say they are bullish on the Asia Pacific hotel market and are interested in deploying capital into the sector in 2021. Gap between buyer and seller will narrow JLL is forecasting approximately $7 billion in transactions in 2021, an increase of 20 percent year-on-year, up from $5.8 billion in 2020. While sizable pools capital are ready to be deployed, pricing and financing will
become a larger consideration for investors. According to JLL, the gap between buyer and seller price expectations will narrow as distress becomes less likely, while sellers come to terms with the impact of operating cash flow on pricing. Over 80 percent of investors surveyed are eyeing discounts of 20 to 30 percent, while sellers are expected to move roughly 10 percenty in asking prices. Most desirable hotel markets Japan (52 percent) and Southeast Asia (46 percent) are emerging as the most desirable hotel investment markets in Asia Pacific, owing to strong demand dynamics and positive longterm fundamentals. Investors also view Australia (31 percent) and China (22 percent) favorably. “The cycle has been reset and we are now on the cusp of a period of recovery,” said Nihat Ercan, senior managing
director, JLL hotels & hospitality group. “Optimism around the deployment of vaccines and an eventual recovery in tourism has started to drive activity and investors don’t want to miss the opportunity.” Tourism pick up seen In the Philippines, while the hospitality industry was one of the most heavily affected sectors in 2020, hotel operators are optimistic that the hospitality sector will soon transition to a period of recovery. “Most hotels operators are trying to determine the best estimated return of airline traffic,” said P. Ryan Isip, JLL Philippines’ head of capital markets. “Hotels definitely see tourism picking up as soon as flight restrictions are lifted—it is only a matter of timing, which is heavily dependent on the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine. Local tourism and staycations are also being encouraged to push demand.”
Breaking away from the big city BIG city life has always been the dream: to live within a few steps from a fast-paced lifestyle of sights and sounds, big opportunities and experiences, and crowds to share it all with. Megacities like Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, and Metro Davao are good examples, testaments to the rapid growth throughout many islands in the Philippines. But with the onslaught of covid-19, the pandemic has impacted property seekers’ preferences, and more and more people are now looking for a life outside these dense areas. Real estate developer AboitizLand is meeting the needs of these homebuyers as they offer properties outside megacities, rooted in sustainability and a love for a healthy living environment. Exploring Luzon One property that melds exciting city living with laid-back suburban life is The Villages at Lipa -- 49 hectares of residential units with wide-open spaces and lush green pocket parks. This village is complemented by the LIMA Exchange for the residents’ basic needs, The Outlets at Lipa for leisure, retail and dining, and LIMA Technology Center for work opportunities. Vecinos, which translates to ‘neighbors’, can look forward to living in homes that offer larger spaces for less, located within one of three villages, with two currently open: Sierra Village for families looking to expand their presence in the South, and Brook Village for growing families and professionals. Further south is a sanctuary by the sea: AboitizLand’s Seafront Residences (Seen in photo), located in San Juan, Batangas, designed by BUDJI + ROYAL and master-planned by DPZ CoDesign.
Vecinos can live out a relaxed work-from-paradise lifestyle as they enjoy views of Mount Banahaw and Tayabas Bay, and get beachfront access anytime they want. A Seafront house and lot now starts at P13.5M versus its P6.6M launch price in 2017. For affordable properties in a variety of locations in Central Luzon, AboitizLand offers its Ajoya Communities. Ajoya Capas, Ajoya Pampanga, and Ajoya Cabanatuan all have hectare-wide spaces, greenbelts and pocket parks, modern homes with porches, balconies and ventanillas, and even a town plaza where vecinos can safely converge and enjoy life within a self-sustaining community. Houses and lots are available for as low as P12,000 a month; lot-only units start at an affordable price of P7,000 a month. Skirting Cebu AboitizLand continues to contribute
to the development of Cebu, building properties that have always prioritized sustainability and high regard for the environment. These developments are located in the near outskirts of Metro Cebu, away from the most densely-populated areas, for families who crave more open spaces and amenities. Foressa Mountain Town, for instance, offers lots that are located in the mountain town of Cansomoroy, Balamban, Cebu, giving vecinos picturesque mountain views with easy access to bike and hike trails surrounded by over 800 species of flora and fauna. For those looking to live life by the mountains and the sea, AboitizLand’s Amoa (Inset photo) offers relaxing views, as well as convenient amenities including its one-hectare central park. All 60 hectares of this residential development form a network of villages that become more intimate neighborhoods for that warm community vibe. Amoa stands along Segment 2 of the proposed Metro Cebu Expressway, which will reduce travel time from Naga City to Danao City. Visit https:// aboitizland.com/ for more information.

OUNG performer Psalms David gives his fans another musical treat with the release of his sophomore single under GMA Music titled “I Need To Know.”
Formally launched on April 15, the song was composed by Christian Bautista who served as the 20-year-old singer’s mentor during his stint in the reality singing show, The Clash. According to the singer, the song was made to be sung in high notes. When it was given to him, he challenged himself to sing it in the original key. “This song, which tells the story of a man who wants to know where he stands with the girl he loves, really tested my limits as a singer. But I’m proud that I’m able to showcase my vocal ability in this song,” Psalms shared with Manila Standard Entertainment in a virtual interview. Psalms highlighted the story behind the song discussing how it tackles making important decisions at the beginning of blooming love. “The song explores different sides of love life. It’s the getting-to-know stage and you realized that you’re not the only person who is wooing the girl’s heart,” he expressed. Compared to his debut single released a year ago, there was a conscious effort to make “I Need To Know” fresh and different. “This song is way different compared to my debut single, which is a heartbreak song and a ballad. This one has a futuristic sound added to it. And this song is very relatable to this generation. Sir Christian added a few beats that are very in today,” he added. Psalms shared how he related to its heartfelt lyrics and hopes the fans would connect to its message, “Sir Christian and I had a talk about the song and we wanted to make our viewers know that in any relationship, it is a priority to communicate always. Since I haven’t had any relationship, I can relate this song with myself in times when I need to decide whether I’ll choose myself or other people. There are many ways to connect with this song that’s why I’m excited to know how my listeners can relate to it.” In the trying time we’re in, Psalms believes in the power of music which can bring comfort to the Filipino audience. According to him, it helped a lot in coping with the current situation, “It became my fortress. I believe music is an instrument of God to comfort us during this pandemic.” On April 25, catch him as he delivers a powerful performance of his latest single together with Christian Bautista himself at GMA Network’s weekend variety program All-Out Sundays. Tune in to “I Need To Know” on GMA Music’s official YouTube channel, Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and other digital streaming platforms worldwide.
A young warrior’s passion for combat sports By Paolo Manuel C. Fule WUSHU sanda or mixed martial arts is one of the world’s most dangerous sports, and if you’re part of this discipline, it means that you had a lot of guts and courage, and you exhibit hard work during training and competition. Asher B. Rifani, a young lad from Baguio City, is one prime example of a person who dedicated his time to wushu sanda and showed everyone what it takes to be in this sport. Asher, who was born on Sept. 14, 2000,
is a 5-foot-7 wushu sanda warrior. He is now studying as a 2nd year college at the University of the Cordilleras. He started his interest in wushu when he was just three when his mom competed in the Asian Games. Asher played for the BBEAL (Baguio-BenguetEducational Athletic League) wushu sanda competition. “In this sport, you have to have a good mind, good heart, and prepared body. You should also train hard,” said the young athlete from Baguio. In 2017, he won a bronze medal at the Palarong Pambansa 48 kgs. division and in 2018 in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, he won the gold medal for wushu sanda 52 kg. division. His advice to those youngsters who would also like to be in this kind of sports, “Train hard and learn discipline. Put your boastfulness in the ring and not outside the ring.” Asher’s big dream is to clock a good record in martial arts and finish his studies.

Fostering Saves Lives By Rowena David
I
WAS not a cat person. Being a crazy cat lady was not part of my life’s plan. But a chance encounter with a malnourished stray kitten one fateful day had changed all that. There was something about that kitten that tugged at my heartstrings. To me, she looked like a helpless baby wandering aimlessly in the jungle. The possibility of surviving on her own was very low. Long story short, I took the kitten home. When we arrived home, I gave her some leftover food which she immediately devoured. She fell asleep under our dining table a few minutes later. I named her Goya. This happened in 2011, and since then, I have fostered many stray kittens and rehomed most of them. Little did I know then that Goya would be the reason I would get involved in animal welfare. Before Goya came into my life, I had zero knowledge and experience in taking care of a kitten, so I joined several cat groups on Facebook in order to get cat parenting tips. Those groups were invaluable to first-time cat parents like me. Through those groups, I learned new words such as “litter box,” “deworming,” “vaccination,” and “spaying,” among others. The cat groups also opened my eyes to the sad situation of stray animals. I discovered that kitten abandonment is
Snowie, another rescue, already has an adopter but the author is fostering her for now.
very common in the Philippines. There are more stray kittens that need to be rescued than there are people willing to adopt them. The average lifespan of a stray cat is five years, give or take. Compare that to the lifespan of a healthy indoor cat, which is ten to fifteen years. That’s a huge difference. Most stray cats die young because their immune system has been compromised due to prolonged neglect, and because they are exposed to human cruelty. That’s the sad reality of strays, which is why opening up your home to stray kittens can literally save their lives.
Twinkie is the friendliest kitten among the author’s current fosters.
If you would like to help save lives by fostering, here are some things you should know: * Remember that the goal of fostering is to say goodbye. You will get attached to your fosters and it is understandable that saying goodbye to them will be emotionally difficult. I can not count how many times I cried when it was time for my foster kittens to go to their forever homes. If you will be tempted to permanently adopt your foster kittens, remember that you will be adopting them out to good homes so that you can take in another homeless animal who needs your care. * You will need a lot of patience. Kittens are very playful so some things will get broken. I cannot count how many times I had to buy new mugs simply because my cats kept pushing them off the table. Also, untrained kittens will poop and pee anywhere in the house. Training them where to do their business might take some time but they will eventually get it. * You will need sufficient time to care for your foster kittens. Kittens who are not yet weaned require round-theclock feeding, so if you are at work all day, then an older kitten or an adult cat might be the right fit for you.

* You will need to prepare a space for your foster. Foster animals need space of their own where they can feel safe. Kittens love boxes. You can place a box in one corner of the house and the kittens will immediately gravitate toward it. You can put a soft blanket in there, too, so that the little felines will be more comfortable. * If you are renting, ask your landlord first if they allow pets. If you are living with your family or friends, make sure that no one in the house is allergic to pet fur. * Know the location of the nearest vet clinics in your area. Just like human babies, kittens can sometimes get sick and knowing where to take them is the difference between life and death. Fostering animals is good for your mental health. It is exciting to come home when you know that a dog will enthusiastically greet you at the door, wagging tails and all. Meanwhile, a cat’s purr has a comforting effect which can help you sleep better. If you are interested in fostering a
rescued dog or a cat, there are several animal shelters that could use your help. What some people do not know is that animals shelters have limited space and resources. They rely on sponsors, donors, and volunteers so they can continue caring for their rescues. Volunteering to foster one of their rescues will enable them to save more stray animals. Fostering stray kittens is a challenging but rewarding experience. There is sense of responsibility in the knowledge that a tiny animal is dependent on you for its survival. And with this responsibility comes a sense of empowerment, the feeling that you have the opportunity to change the animal’s life for the better. Fostering
AKF urges rescue groups that have appealed for help to consider fostering given the immense strain on shelters during the current COVID 19 outbreak. Fostering can be a viable mechanism to enable sheltering organizations to protect the most vulnerable community populations and their pets. Fostering helps reduce the burden on shelters, particularly in light of a potential increase in the intake of pets from those who are sick or hospitalized. In most instances, shelters already maintain a network of supporters or trained volunteers that can be temporary foster care providers. The Covid 19 outbreak caused many people financial challenges which have limited their ability to care for their pets, and this could place an additional strain on shelters. AKF has been flooded with requests to take in pets in the early days of the lockdown. This was heartbreaking. Keeping pets out of shelters through fostering and other lifesaving mechanisms will enable them to use their kennels for other animals in need and to operate with fewer staff. Most importantly, it will enable them to continue saving lives. Another way to minimize the risk of shelters being overburdened with returned foster dogs and cats once quarantine has ended is a ‘foster-to-adopt’ model. In this model, the shelters can work with the foster care providers to market for adoption the pets they are fostering so that the animals are

adopted directly from the foster home and never return to the shelter. Another option is to stagger the return of animals in foster homes to the shelters. This will allow the shelter more time to plan and structure the return of fostered pets. While there is still a risk of shelters facing a large number of animals returning from foster homes following the end of quarantine, the benefit to the shelters, animals and communities far outweighs the risk.
Online Adoption
Speaking from our own experience, AKF has a hard time minimizing its activities to a minimum during this period as events we hold publicly is a vital source of aid but, we advise other shelters, that their adoption programs do not have to be suspended during the pandemic and can still be carried out in a safe manner if precautions are taken. AKF has utilized the internet’s live stream capabilities to market our adoptable dogs and it has been a successful practice. Removing other obstacles to adoptions should also be considered such as: reducing adoption fees, providing adoption interviews by phone, delivering the adopted animals to their new homes, and encouraging foster-to-adopt when possible. Shelters can also market adoption with vouchers to return for surgery when the pandemic has ended while manually checking up with adopters as soon the pandemic is over to ensure the animals will be neutered.
Blaming The Animals
AKF is aware that animals, especially the strays, are suffering ten-folds during this pandemic and our feeding program can only alleviate a good number of them as long as we can reach them, we know that, moving forward, priorities for animal welfare programs may shift after this crisis has been resolved. There may be increased disease transmission caused by free-roaming animals. Some of these animals may travel farther outside their territories to seek food when their usual sources of food are disrupted, causing secondary disease outbreaks to spread to other animals or humans (e.g. rabies). In some cases, animals have been blamed for the crisis and viewed negatively. This results in a breakdown of the human-animal bond and can lead to retaliatory mass culling of animals and the unnecessary suffering this causes. Reported cases of stray poisoning and “pest” control activities are all over the internet during this pandemic. Shelters can only do so much to protect these pitiful animals, especially the suffering pets and hapless strays. Please, if you can foster or adopt an animal during this lockdown, do so. AKF also urge the shelters to consider these options we have implemented ourselves. This is a very difficult time and we need to find ways to protect and save the animals in our care. They need us more than ever.
