BEST PERFORMANCE WOMEN, YOUTH POWER PH SHOWING IN ASIAD IN 8 YEARS By Riera U. Mallari
J
AKARTA—Following a one-gold performance in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, the Philippines came into the 2018 Palembang Jakarta Asiad with modest goals and low expectations, hoping for the best while expecting the worst.
After 17 days, the 227-strong delegation delivered four golds, two silvers and 15 bronze medals, its best showing in the games in eight years, improving on the 1-3-11 goldsilver-bronze haul of the delegation in the 2014 Incheon Asian Games. “Our athletes can stand proud on the medal stand. We have really improved our medal tally from one gold, three silvers and 11 bronze medals. We’ve done better,” said Philippine Olympic Committee president Ricky Vargas. Looking at the results, two common denominators stood out—women and youth power. Turn to A2

TRUMP SKIPS SUMMIT OF ASIAN ALLIES WASHINGTON—US President Donald Trump will not attend regional summits with Asian allies in November but will send Vice President Mike Pence instead, the White House announced Friday. Pence will travel to Singapore to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit and the East Asia Summit, it said. He will then go on to Papua New Guinea for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings, the White House said. Trump attended the Asean summit in the Philippines and the Apec summit in Vietnam last year. The White House said Pence, while in Asia, would “highlight the United States’ vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific, based on respect for sovereignty, the rule of law, and the principles of free, fair, and reciprocal trade.” “The Vice President looks forward to meeting with our allies and partners from across the region to advance security, prosperity, and freedom for all,” it said. The White House also confirmed Friday that Trump will travel to Paris for the Nov. 11 commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I. Trump will attend the ceremonies to “highlight the sacrifices that Americans have made, not only during World War I but also in the century since, in the name of liberty,” it said. The president will then visit Ireland to “renew the deep and historic ties” between the two countries, the White House said. LaterinNovember, thepresidentwilltravel to Buenos Aires for the Group of 20 summit, theWhite House said, and he will make a stop in Colombia on the same trip. AFP
SARA BRISTLES AT CRITICS OVER RISING RAPE CASES By F. Pearl A. Gajunera
D
AVAO CITY—Mayor Sara DuterteCarpio has mocked critics, saying the city government did nothing in the high number of rape incidents in this southeastern coastal city. In a statement, Carpio admitted she received reports the city had the highest number of rape incidents based on the 2017 data of the Philippine National Police. She said she had made steps to signficantly decrease the number after receiving the report during the City Peace and Order Council meeting last year. “In 2017, this fact has been taken up in the Davao City Peace and Order Council, where it was discovered that many of these cases where incestuous rape or rape by someone who has a close relationship with the victim such as a neighbor or a friend (sic),” the mayor said. After the meeting, the City Social Services and Development Office conducted a research and implementation program aimed at bringing the number of rape incidents to zero. “One of these interventions, and
the most effective of which, targeted communities where children are taught about sexuality and sexual abuse, including when a touch by a family member is no longer appropriate and acceptable,” Carpio said. Due to the efforts of the CSSDO, she said there had been a significant decrease of incestuous rape from 120 incidents from January to June last year to 95 in the comparative period this year. She said the report came straight from Davao City Police Office Director Sr. Supt. Alexander Tagum based on the data of the Women and Children Protection Investigation and Detection Management Board. Carpio said the efforts of the City Government should not be overshadowed by the joke of her father, President Rodrigo Duterte. “This positive effect of government action should not be lost in the
repertoire of the President and the attacks by those who hate his guts and humor,” she said. “I can truthfully say that there was action and positive effect.” She then turned to the critics of her father and her family, asking if they have done something on the matter. “And I pose this question to all who seemingly want to see Davao City fail—what have you done to help?” she asked. Last week, critics showed their outburst over the “joke” remarks of Duterte when he said the reason for the higher number of rape incidents in Davao City was it had many beautiful ladies. But the Philippine Commission on Women on Saturday stressed that rape was not a laughing matter and joking about it was offensive. “Rape is no laughing matter. Rape can cause life-long emotional and physical effects on its victims. Even to non-victims, joking about rape is offensive,” it said in a statement. Duterte’s joke is only the latest of several instances where he made light of the issue of rape. PCW said rape was never a woman’s fault, but that of a dangerous mindset that stemmed from unequal power relations between men and
women. “A woman’s body, her appearance, or her clothes are not invitations for rape or any form of sexual violence. Rape victims are young and old, rich and poor, short and tall. People can be raped regardless of their physical attributes such as the color of their skin, body size, facial features, or hair style,” it said. “Women are raped because their bodies are viewed as sexual conquests and objects, that can be owned and abused by men—a mindset which stems from the unequal power relations between men and women,” it added. PCW called on people to put an end to rape culture by taking it seriously, adding “As long as there are people and institutions that trivialize rape, normalize sexual violence, embolden perpetrators, and put the blame on women, rape culture will continue to persist. “As we strive to build a community free from all forms of gender-based violence especially against all women and girls, we call on all citizens to act and do their part in putting an end to rape and rape culture by taking it seriously, speaking up against abuse and holding perpetrators accountable.” With Nat Mariano

“Initial assessment has been made by crewmen of BRP Del Pilar and divers from the Coast Guard MRRV 4407 and they are now planning the method of retrieving/ extraction based on the gathered data by the divers,” Detoyato said. In the meanwhile, an investigating and assessment team has been formed to look into the tragedy. The team, formed by Navy flag officer-in-command Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad, is “expected to be aboard the ship anytime Saturday,” Detoyato said in Filipino. He said the BRP Gregorio Del Pilar was recoverable as no hull penetration had been reported. “There is very minimal damage to the hull,” Detoyato said, noting that damage seemed to be confined to the starboard (right) propeller of the ship. Three days after the grounding, Navy authorities have not provided specific details as to where the navy frigate was heading to, neither the port destination. But Detoyato said BRP Del Pilar ran aground while on routine maritime patrol at the West Philippine Sea Tuesday. He said they were still awaiting the arrival of the two tugboats which would play a vital role in the retrieval of the grounded vessel, but in its absence, undersea assessments were being done to come up with the right plan of retrieval. The assessment includes the physical condition of the hull, and the different kinds of propellers of BRP Del Pilar where one of the ship Thruster was damaged. Two tugboats bound for Hasa-Hasa Shoal left Batangas Port last Wednesday and were reportedly approaching the accident site. China has reportedly offered assistance to remove the frigate but Detoyato said no formal word relating China’s bid had reached Navy authorities. Unconfirmed reports said there were Chinese ships near Hasa-Hasa Shoal where BRP Del Pilar had been stucked. Detoyato declined to comment on such reports, saying it was up to the Department of Foreign Affairs to make appropriate response. At present, a Philippine Navy patrol ship and an air reconnaissance aircraft were dispatched to Hasa-Hasa Shoal to monitor the situation and protect BRP Del Pilar and its 117 sailors. The BRP Nestor Reinoso (PG-380) is also on hand to provide help, Detoyato said. The BRP Gregorio Del Pilar is one of three Hamilton-class cutters acquired by the Philippine Navy from the United States Coast Guard and converted into frigates. These ships have a gross tonnage of 3,250 tons, length of 378 feet, beam of 43 feet, and draft of 15 feet while its propulsion systems consist of two diesel engines and two gas turbine engines, giving it a top speed of 29 knots. These vessels have a cruising range of 14,000 miles and a sea and loiter time of 45 days. They are armed with a 76-mm. Oto Melara automatic cannon, 25-mm. and 20-mm. light cannons, and .50-caliber machine guns. With PNA

All of the Philippines’ gold medalists in the games are women, with the youngest at 17 years old— golfer Yuka Saso, who is joined by fellow golfers Bianca Pagdanganan, 21, and Kaye Lois Go, 19, and skateboarder Margielyn Didal, 19. Even the oldest of them all in weightlifting icon Hidilyn Diaz is still a millennial at 27 years. “The women in sports are really giving us so much pride. So we should really look at parity and bring in more [of them] in sports. They have proven that they can win,” Vargas said. “You have a champion golfer at 17 [Saso] and a 19-year-old champion skateboarder, Margielyn [Didal]. The oldest is 27, Hidilyn [Diaz], who is still relatively young. Our athletes today have passion for their sports and have shown that they can win,” added Vargas, hopeful that in the next coming years, they can only get better representing the Philippines. Vargas, of course, has every reason to be optimistic as the medal winners for the Philippines in the games have an average age of 22, with the oldest coming at 31 years, BMX bike bronze medalist Daniel Caluag. Like in the past games, the same medal producers such as wushu, taekwondo and boxing had their share of the glory.

Taekwondo delivered three bronze medals, courtesy of Pauline Lopez in the women’s -57kg, and the poomsae teams of Dustin Jacob Mella, Jordan Dominguez and Rodolfo Reyes Jr. (men’s) and Juvenile Faye Crisostomo, Rinna Babanto and Janna Dominique Oliva. Wushu had its two-bronze share through Agatha Wong in the Women’s Taijiquan and Taijijian All-Round and Dive Wally in the Women’s Sanda -52kg. Vargas’ boxing had a silver from flyweight Rogen Ladon and two bronze medals from light flyweight Carlo Paalam and middleweight Eumir Marcial—a result which gave the Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines president “mixed emotions.” “From the sport that I lead, I’m frustrated not by how the boxers performed, but how the results were judged,”Vargas said, ruing the judging in the games, which seemed to have favored boxers from Uzbekistan, the home country of International Boxing Federation interim president Gafuk Rakhimov. “When boxing presidents and athletes come to your dugout saying that you won, it gives you a sense that injustice has been done. When the crowd from Indonesia and some from Thailand were cheering for the
Philippines, then there must have been something wrong that had happened,” Vargas said. While disappointment was aplenty in boxing, athletics, swimming, bowling and basketball, where a Jordan Clarkson-led Philippine team ended up with fifth place, there were also a couple of surprises in skateboarding, which produced a gold in the women’s street skate, and pencak silat, which contributed four bronze medals to the Philippine cause. They are Almohaidib Abad in the Men’s Single, Dines Dumaan in the Men’s Class B 50kg to 55kg, Jefferson Rhey Loonin in the Men’s Class D 60kg to 65kg and beauty queen Cherry Bronze Regalado in the Women’s Single. Adding to the total haul of the country were silver medalist Kiyomi Watanabe in the Women’s -63 kgs in judo and bronze medalists Maggie Ochoa in the Newaza Women’s -49kg ju-jitsu, and Junna Tsukii in the Women’s -50kg karate. “The athletes were bringing in honors, reason the individual athletes need all the support. They get the blame, they get the reward, but our role is to really support the athletes. They are the most important part of the equation,” said Vargas in paying tribute to the athletes.
ng Bayan leadership assembly in Pasay City Friday at the GSIS Financial Center. “You must surrender your excess firearms. Do not go around in excess of about two. But we will assign every candidate a security,” Duterte said, adding he was prohibiting intimidation and vote-buying. “It will be clean. The votes will be cast and will be counted correctly,” Duterte said. Duterte also lauded PDP-Laban for being a “principled [political] party,” and encouraged its members to maintain the party’s integrity. He reassured the PDP-Laban members of his full support as “we move forward in realizing our dream of building a stronger and more prosperous nation.” “I trust that every member of PDP-Laban will be with me as we bring about real and lasting change for the sake of our people and our democratic institutions, and for our children, and their children to come,” he expressed. Meanwhile, Duterte underscored that the public interest must be preserved and protected at all costs as he renewed his commitment to have a clean and honest 2019 elections. “You must surrender your excess firearms. Do not go around in excess of about two [security detail],” he said. The said such order also was intended for members of the PDP-Laban because this mandate did not exclude anyone.

ARMED MEN KILL SIX CIVILIANS IN ‘ZAMBO’ By Francisco Tuyay FIVE residents of a coastal village and a civilian volunteer were killed while another was wounded after a group of boat-riding gunmen fired at them following an encounter with security forces in Sirawai, Zamboanga del Norte Thursday night. In a delayed report, Chief Insp. Helen Galvez, Public Information officer of the Police Regional office in Zambaonga del Norte identified the fatalities as Amsid Maugag Callun, civilian volunteer, Absar Julkanain Gumba, Kabiran Saliuddin Ginsing, Saddam Baitulla Tahir, Jaayri Bairulla Lumihig and Muslimin Adan. The incident occurred after
five unidentified armed men clad in military uniform on board a motorized pump boat swooped down at Barangay Piacan, Sirawan town at about 6:05 pm. Troops manning a detachment at the said village spotted the armed men, resulting to an encounter. The military, however, did not give any details on the circumstances surrounding the death of the victims. In the middle of the fighting, the armed men forcibly seized a sexagenarian couple whom they used as hostages to evade pursuing troops as they retreated. The couple was identified as Rufo Roda, 62, a retired civilian volunteer and his wife Helen, 64, both residents
of Piacan village. The armed men, along with their hostage couple, withdrew towards the high seas of Sibuco in Zamboanga del Norte. Elements of the Sirawai Municipal Police Station, along with troopers from the 42nd Infantry Battalion and Zamboanga del Norte Provincial Mobile Force Company, are now conducting hot pursuit operation against the armed men to rescue the couple. Galvez said they are still clueless as to the armed group’s affiliation. But reports said that the coastal villages of Zamboanga del Norte are frequently visited by the notorious Abu Sayyaf Group bandits.
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Escort Flotilla Four include the JS Kaga (DDH-184), a helicopter carrier vessel providing space for five SH-6OK patrol helicopters, and two other destroyers JS Suzutsuki (DD117) and JS Inazuma (DD-105). Duterte was accompanied by Japanese Naval officials as he arrived at the JS Kaga. The said warship houses nearly 800 personnel and crew who accorded the President with foyer honors upon his arrival. From Japan to Alava Wharf in Subic, Olongapo City, the Japanese military vessels passed through the South China Sea. According to Assistant Defense Attaché of the Embassy of Japan Michinori Fukuda, JMSDF seeks to actively contribute to the peace and stability in IndoPacific region. “It [seeks] to deepen and enhance mutual understanding and trust with countries in the region,” said the Japanese official, adding the twomonth deployment of the said ship is in line with “Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy” as promoted by Japan. “We are going to call at five countries such as India, Indonesia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and here Philippines. The purpose of this Deployment is to enhance our operational capability and to promote cooperation and interoperability with our partner navies,” Fukuda added. Fukuda also said that the visit of the three warships aims to promote mutual understanding and friendship and to receive supplies.
‘KIKI CHALLENGE’ CRAZY AND DANGEROUS—MMDA’S NEBRIJA By Joel E. Zurbano and Maricel V. Cruz A METRO Manila Development Authority official described the stunt and dance moves to the tune of “In My Feelings” or commonly known as “Kiki” challenge as crazy and dangerous, and asked the public to be considerate for everyone’s safety on the road. This developed as Micha Anne Gabuten, the woman who did the “challenge” along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue, offered an apology to the MMDA and told the agency she is willing to pay the penalties for her violations. Gabuten personally visited MMDA
assistant secretary and spokesperson Celine Pialago on Friday and personally apologized to what happened. “She asked a television station [of her choice] for her to make an apology and talk to me personally,” said Pialago in a Viber message sent to members of the media late Friday afternoon. Pialago said Gabuten will be fined P500 for jaywalking while the driver will have to pay a total of P650 for reckless driving and obstruction. “If the driver was the one taking the video, that’s a violation of the AntiDistracted Driving Act, but if not, then it is not covered under the ADDA,” she added. Reports said the one who took the
video of Gabuten dancing was a copassenger who was at the backseat of the car. The MMDA earlier asked the help of the National Bureau of Investigation to identify the woman in the video. MMDA Task Force Special Operations chief Edison Nebrija Jr. expressed his disappointment on the incident, describing the viral stunt as crazy and dangerous. “Personally, I am more interested in apprehending the driver because he did not only delay the traffic but also have compromised the safety of his passenger and that of the other motorists on the road,” said Nebrija.
to overspending again and will be a major concern, particularly with Commission on Audit which reviews fund utilization and program implementation by the agency,”he added. To address the overutilization, Cedro said that the agency has modified the case rates for hospitalization with an end view for establishing control in providing financial support to individuals. Board Resolution No. 0256 Series 2018 has approved the suspension of the classification system of the Individual Medical Assistance Program case rate in providing assistance for client-patients. The daily allocation for Individual Medical Assistance Program now is P4.1 million which resulted in the reduction of the number of applications the PCSO may accept and process. “You have probably received complaints about it, but we need to do this or else we will go back to the issue of ‘overutilization’. As a general rule, you only operate within your budget. Simply put, we can only give what we have,” stressed Cedro.
PRO-DU30 GROUP FORMS POLITICAL PARTY
By Vito Barcelo
A NEW group supporting President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration has formed a political party called Katipunan ng Demokratikong Pilipino to replace the “same old corrupt politicians whose hands are all soiled with stolen money and who cheated to become senators or congressmen.” The KDP is headed by former DepEd undersecretary Antonio “Butch” Valdez who said they will fill up their own political candidates in the forthcoming local elections with the intention to implement programs that will directly benefit the people. He said the party started as an advocacy group called ”Movements to Save the Nation, Solidarity for Sovereignty and Citizen National Guard”and applied to the Commission on Elections as a political party. Valdez said KDP is a party of principle, not convenience and not personalities. “We can come up with a team of winners, not just to join debates, but eventually to seize collective leadership which will implement programs that directly benefit the Filipino people. It is our hope that, with God’s grace and intervention, trusting on our people’s determination to fulfill our quest for a Philippine renaissance, we shall succeed,” he said.
NAPOLCOM OKAYS EXPANSION OF PNP THE National Police Commission announced on Saturday it has approved the proposed expansion of the Philippine National Police. The Napolcom signed Resolution 2018-437 last Aug. 29 giving the PNP the go signal to recruit 17,925 Police Officer 1 (PO1) to“replenish personnel losses, increase personnel strength, enhance police visibility, and improve policeto-population ratio to consequently improve the prevailing peace and order condition in the operational area covered by the respective Police Regional Offices (PROs) and National Support Units (NSUs).” Commission Vice Chairman and Executive Officer Rogelio Casurao said that for 2018, the PNP will recruit 10,000 civilians for the regular recruitment quota and 7,925 new police officers for the attrition recruitment quota. “Out of the 10,000 regular recruitment quota, 9,500 will be distributed to the Special Action Force [SAF] and the Public Safety Forces [PSFs] of all Police Regional Offices, except the National Capital Region Police Office, in order to strengthen their personnel complement, while the remaining 500 shall be allotted to selected PROs and NSUs to support their personnel buildup program,” said Casurao. BILL EXTENDING INC’S TELECOM FRANCHISE OK’D THE House of Representatives unanimously approved on third and final reading House Bill 7753, which seeks to extend for another 25 years the franchise granted to the Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ), under Republic 4339, as amended by RA 7225, to install, maintain and operate private telecommunications or electronic communications services throughout the Philippines and between the Philippines and other countries and territories. The bill, principally authored by Rep. Florida Robes of San Jose del Monte City, got the nod of 224 lawmakers in last week’s plenary session at the House. The bill has been transmitted to the Senate for action. Robes said the maintenance of private telecommunications networks is an acceptable practice among large organizations for their efficient interconnection over extended geographical areas. The need for privacy and exclusivity for transmission and exchange of information is served by this, she said. Robes said the Iglesia ni Cristo, being an ever-expanding religious organization that disseminates uniform bi-weekly preaching in all its regular religious congregations nationwide, and even worldwide, needs to use and maintain a private telecommunications network to serve its proselytization. PCSO MODIFIES BUDGET ALLOCATION FOR MEDICAL AID TO AVOID OVERSPENDING PHILIPPINE Charity Sweepstakes Office through the Charity Assistance Department, announced on Saturday that the agency has modified its budget allocation program for its medical assistance services due to the overutilization of funds. “The Budget Department has called the attention of CAD with regard to its fund utilization for the year. The Individual Medical Assistance Program [IMAP] already exceeded its utilization by more than P500 million. This is attributed to a marked increase in the number of beneficiaries availing of financial support from the agency by 27.93 percent for the first semester of 2018 compared to its 2017 data of the same period. This is compounded further by the rising cost in healthcare treatment,” explained assistant general manager for Charity Sector, Dr. Larry Cedro in response to several complaints from patients at the Lung Center of the Philippines from the time the shift in providing assistance was implemented. “If CAD will not change the manner by which it provides medical assistance, this would result

LABOR group Associated Labor Unions-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines has urged the government to immediately implement various social safety programs and raise the workers salary to address the worsening economic depression and help millions of daily minimum wage workers. The labor group said that the buying power of workers standard daily minimum pay in the private sector nationwide has fell to P200 a day. “Without a serious government social safety program in place and a significant wage increase to address the worsening economic depression, a decreasing buying power of wage bears harmful effect to workers’ health and capacity to produce quality goods and services needed by employers and business owners to thrive,” ALU TUCP spokesperson Alan Tanjusay said. In their monitoring and evaluation of the inflation versus the daily minimum wage, the labor group said the average total daily minimum wage nationwide fell today to P200 a day effective this week from P208.83 in June 2018. In June 2018, the total average of different daily minimum wage rates across the country was P335 and its equivalent buying power is P208.83. Vito Barcelo

LADON SETTLES FOR SILVER;
PH PUSHES FOR BOXING REFORMS J
AKARTA—No thanks to a head butt, Rogen Ladon will go home with a silver medal in men’s flyweight of boxing in the 18th Asian Games.
Ladon was Team Philippines’ last man standing, who had a shot at a fifth gold medal. But an ugly wound in his right eyebrow oozed with blood from a head butt by Uzbekistan’s Jasurbek Latipov, forcing the ring doctor to stop the fight. But even the boxing announcer was at a loss on how to declare Latipov the winner in the gold medal match that was stopped only 22 seconds into the second round. The games’ announcer at the JI Expo called it a Referee Stopped Contest-Second Round, but the verdict was decided by the judges’ scorecards which, except for the Indonesian, went the Uzbek’s way, 3-1. “It’s a big disappointment,” Ladon said after the medal ceremony that had a sullen Philippine Olympic Committee President Ricky Vargas handing him his silver. “It’s a major disappointment. Not only me, but the entire country aspired for the gold medal,” he added. Latipov received the gold medal tainted by allegations of cheating. Ladon ended up a wounded silver medalist— the left side of his forehead just above the eyebrow almost heavily bandaged to cover a wound that eventually hurt his bid for a gold medal. “He [Uzbek] was in the ropes and when he sprung back, he gave me the head butt,” said Ladon, who believed he took the first round by connecting clearer scoring punches. Vargas, POC Chairman Abraham Tolentino and Alliance of Boxing Associations in the Philippines secretary general Ed Picson could only shrug their shoulders over the controversial loss absorbed by Ladon—the third after Nesthy Petecio in the preliminaries and Carlo Paalam and Eumir Felix Marcial in the semifinals last Thursday. Picson said several federations also expressed dismay over the judging in the tournament. “There are several federations who felt that they were robbed as well,” said that Vargas “will make suggestions and try see to it that reforms are made in the boxing communities. “In the AIBA, there are no protests. The best we could do is to go to the congress,” he said. With the loss, the Philippines ended its campaign with four gold, two silver and 15 silver medals—a tally that was good for No.19 in the medal standings and far better than the lone BMX cycling gold Daniel Caluag won in Incheon in 2014. bout and had to scramble for any remedy. They got one—Dermabond, derma glue that closes wounds temporarily, thanks to a social media post by volleyball player Mika Reyes, whose Indonesian fan gave the adhesive for free. But the derma glue could not withstand a head butt by the Uzbek. Ladon’s wound, which was about an inch, opened prompting the referee to summon the match doctor, who eventually
stopped the fight. With four gold medals—courtesy of weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, skateboarder Margielyn Didal and golfers Yuka Saso, Bianca Pagdanganan and Lois Kaye Go—the Philippine delegation goes back home starting on Monday with a better haul than Incheon. But China remained as the most dominant in Asia with 273 medals—123 of them gold—followed by Japan with 70 golds and South Korea 45.
EALAS, VOLCANOES, GAU PREPARE RELIEF GOODS FOR 6,480 FLOOD VICTIMS AROUND 6,480 flood victims in Marikina City, Rizal, and Bataan will be aided with food relief after some of the Philippines’ star athletes and Globe Telecom employees joined forces to host a goods drive for people affected by the recent monsoon rains. Globe Telecom, through its nationwide volunteering program called Time Please, teamed up with members of Philippine Volcanoes, Lady Volcanoes, and Green Archers United FC (GAU), as well as Philippine Youth Tennis sensations Alex Eala and Miko Eala to provide food packs for the worst-hit communities. “We are happy to be given the opportunity to help our community who were severely affected by the recent monsoon rains. We thank our Filipino athletes for joining us in providing immediate relief to the displaced communities,” said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability Officer and Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications at Globe. “We hope more Filipinos will be inspired to share an act of kindness for other people in need.” The volunteering activity attended by some of the Philippines’ star athletes are among

the key efforts initiated by Time Please. Two months into the program, volunteers have rendered over 10 million hours through Time Please, a collaboration of Globe and The Walt Disney Company Philippines. The athletes’ efforts to help the worst-hit localities go beyond empathy. Alex Eala, the 13-year-old Filipina tennis prodigy who recently won the Les Petit 14 tournament in Paris, was among those who shared their acts of kindness by gathering humanitarian aid for the calamitystruck victims. “I’m very happy I got to participate in this outreach activity. I don’t usually get many chances to give back and help communities that are in need. So whatever chance I have, I try to take it,” Eala said. For Steven Andrews Near, member of Philippine Volcanoes, the Time Please experience opened his eyes on how small acts of kinds can collectively make a difference to the lives of those who are in need of help. “This is my first time to join Rise Against Hunger and Time Please. It is a wonderful experience be-

cause I get to give back to those who are in need. It is also great to work with other people—my teammates and Globe—in helping out those affected by the flooding,” he added. Various groups across all walks of life have joined Time Please to do volunteering activities aimed at helping communities that are in need. Some of the key organizations that have joined the program are the Department of Education and Boy Scout of the Philippines.
DANAO City, Cebu—Jhonnel Ababa blew a three-stroke lead but fought back from one down twice then pulled through in another pressurepacked windup with a clutch putt to foil Kim Joo Hyung and snare the inaugural ICTSI Club Filipino de Cebu Invitational crown by one on a closing 70 here yesterday. Resigned to a playoff duel with the young Korean after a wayward drive on the par-4 18th, Ababa played out from the 10th fairway, hit a 52-wedge shot from 110 yards to within 10 feet then drilled in the uphill putt to escape with the par and the win on a 205 total in the rain-shortened P3.5 million ICTSIsponsored event, his first on the Philippine Golf Tour in a long while. It was actually his fourth in the season, counting his three victories in the PGT Asia, including at Forest Hills last July where he beat six others in the local tour’s most crowded final round duel in recent years. He did face another severe test this week—from a talent-laden international field to a tricky course to a wobbly final round stint that saw him squander a three-stroke lead he gained from the rain-suspended third round. He fell behind by one to Kim after a double-bogey on the par-3 No. 12 on another missed tee-shot and to Aussie Damien Jordan after 13 holes. But he rebounded strong on both occasions, flashing the kind of resolve that wins big-time championships, his birdie-birdie feat from No. 14 shoving him back to the lead which he kept until he hit that errant drive on the final hole. “I was already prepared to go into a playoff. But my caddie (Edwin Sanchez) told me to just be safe and try to salvage a bogey at most,” said Ababa. “But I made a great uphill putt and that’s it.” That putt clinched another P650,000 purse for the former national hotshot with the victory also bolstering his confidence heading to next week’s Aboitiz Invitational at the Orchard, another $100,000 event on PGT Asia where he considers himself “lucky.” “I think I’m lucky playing on PGT Asia,” said Ababa, who won backto-back at PGTA Eagle Ridge and Pradera Verde last January. One down heading to the final hole Kim, who became the tour’s youngest winner at 16 at Pueblo de Oro last July, missed forcing a playoff from his end of the duel as he came up short on his approach from 166 yards. The Korean, who birdied No. 11 and grabbed the lead after Ababa doublebogeyed the next, settled for a 69 and a 206 and took home P430,000.
ASIAD BRONZE MEDALIST INSPIRED BY PACQUIAO
By Reuel Vidal
FILIPINO boxing legend Manny Pacquiao serves as inspiration and role model for a generation of athletes including females like karateka Junna Tsukii who won a bronze medal in the 2018 Asian Games. Tsukii won over Thailand’s Raksachart Paweena, 4-1, to secure the bronze in women’s Kumite -50 kg for the Philippines. She says she may be a female but shares many similarities with Pacquiao who has overcome the odds to become a world champion. “Manny Pacquiao is my idol. He’s also small. He’s not very big. But his fighting style is very good. I get inspiration from him even though I’m a girl,” said Tsukii. She gained some measure of revenge with her victory. She won a bronze medal in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in the same event while Paweena got the silver. She also improved on her 11th place finish in the Asian Championships last July.
At the 2018 Philippines National Games Tsukii won a gold in Kumite and a silver in Kata. She focused on just Kumite in the Asiad. “I like Kumite because it’s sparring. You can make up for mistakes. But in Kata you lose if you make one mistake. But in sparring you can adjust if you make little mistakes. Sparring is exciting for me. But sparring can be dangerous. You can get crushed. You can break bones. I myself have suffered a broken tooth,” said Tsukii who is apparently not afraid of combat. “I also go to practice MMA in Japan. I even do boxing in Japan. I am small. I need power and speed. That’s why it’s not enough to do just karate training. That’s why I try other disciplines as well.” The 26-year-old Fil-Japanese was invited to compete in MMA in Japan but chose to focus on her sport. “I have my sights on the Olympics. After Olympics maybe. But you cannot go to other sports when you’re doing karate because it’s amateur sport.
That’s why we cannot do both. We have to choose one,” she said. Tsukii lost her quarterfinal match to finalist Babaeva Bakhriniso of Uzbekistan but defeated Alajmi Hawraa of the United Arab Emirates in the repechage to stay in the medal hunt. “The opponent (Backhriniso) was very good and faster, but I was convinced that I could beat her. I am grateful that she went to the final. Thanks to that, I was able to fight for the bronze through the repechage,” said Tsukii who persevered despite her loss to the Uzbek. She initially thought it would be hard to get a medal because of the many world ranked athletes in her category. She said it was nice to get a medal somehow. Up next for Tsukii is the Karate World Championships in Madrid, Spain this November and the 2018 Karate 1 - Series A Shanghai, China this December. She will participate in those competitions with the hope of qualifying to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

OBSTACLE COURSE
HE Philippines gained gold medals in four sporting events— weightlifting, individual golf, team golf, and skateboarding—at the 2018 Asian Games. All these medalists were women. Certainly this feat is worthy of praise. Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, golfers Yuka Saso, Bianca Pagdanganan, and Lois Kaye Go and skateboarder Margielyn Didal did our country proud. They overcame adversity, persevered in their training, exceeded expectations, defeated the competition and set a good example to the youth. We likewise acknowledge the efforts of all other athletes who bore our flag. While they did not achieve the same results, they prepared hard and gave their best, nonetheless. Sadly, for Filipino athletes, victory comes in spite of inadequate government support, not because of an outpouring of it. The athletes themselves brought up this perennial problem in sports training.
After her gold win, for instance, Diaz herself posted a poem on social media. The poem repeatedly used the phrase “atleta lang (mere athlete)” and referred to a high official in Philippine sports who appeared to regard her this way. In an interview with Sports5, Diaz also said she had been faulted for making request after request—presumably for support—even as expectations of her were too high. She went on and earned her gold, anyway, and is looking to compete at the Olympics in Tokyo two years from now. While it is true that a law was recently enacted to provide incentives to athletes, such benefits will be reaped only after the fact. How can many other athletes reach their winning form in the first place when they have to worry about funding their preparations instead of going straight to improving their performance? Our athletes are never “just” athletes. They are treasures that bring us recognition. They are living examples of what the virtues of hard work, humility and discipline can do. They unify us as a people. Being part of their journey is not limited to having them do courtesy calls or posting congratulatory messages. They need their government’s support—especially the tangible kind.
By Daniel De Carterer and Sarah Lai JAKARTA— The undisputed superstar in the growing world of eSports said gaming deserved its place in the Olympics—despite a mixed reception at its debut Asian Games. Faker, real-name Lee Sang-hyeok, has gone from high school drop-out to fame and fortune through eSports, which are now knocking loudly on the door of the mainstream. He said eSports’ growth potential and popularity among the young made them a must both for the Asian Games, where they were played as a demonstration sport in Jakarta this week, and the Olympics. “ESports has great potential to become an official sport in the AsianGames, as well as the Olympics,” the bespectacled League of Legends player told AFP. “ESports are immensely popular among the youth so I think that eSports has far bigger growth potential than any other sport,” he added. The 22-year-old millionaire is among the biggest and best paid competitors at the multi-sport Games in Indonesia, which have also hosted footballer Son Heungmin and three-time Olympic swimming champion Sun Yang. Faker, dubbed the “Michael Jordan of eSports,” enjoys similar fame and fortune to professional basketball or baseball players in gaming-obsessed South Korea. There, multiple TV channels are dedicated to broadcasting competitions, held at large football stadiums to roars from tens of thousands of fans. The sheer weight of numbers—25 million players, or half of South Korea’s population—makes professional gaming “just like any other sport,” he said. But eSports don’t enjoy such acceptance worldwide, and attempts to win a spot at the Olympics, alongside other new sports like skateboarding and surfing, have so far been rebuffed. “When will (eSports) be included in the Olympics? the simple answer is: I don’t know,” said Kenneth Fok, head of the Asian Electronic Sports Federation chief. Internet addiction Even eSports’ long-trailed inclusion as a medal sport at the next Asian Games has not been confirmed, after the Olympic Council of Asia said it couldn’t give the goahead without an international federation for the sport—which doesn’t yet exist. Given the fractured nature of eSports, and the competing interests of different games manufacturers, that could prove a significant hurdle. “There is still a distance between the eSports world and the sports world – I won’t kid, it is a far distance,” Fok said. “But there needs to be give and take between the two worlds.” Much of the resistance to eSports comes from the non-athletic nature of the competition, and a reluctance to encourage children to spend too much time on screens. Nowhere is the dilemma more stark than in China, home of Alisports, which is leading the charge to have eSports as a medal event at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou—the headquarters of its parent company, e-commerce giant Alibaba. But China was also the first country to brand online addiction as a disorder, and 24 million young people are estimated to be addicts—a subject that causes great concern and has given rise to rehabilitation centres with harsh methods. When China won the first event at the Asian Games in Jakarta, in the Arena of Valor game, their coach wept as he praised the support from back home. But unlike China’s other events at the Asian Games, state broadcaster CCTV didn’t screen eSports, continuing a long tradition of keeping gaming off the airwaves. “Most Chinese regard playing electronic games as internet addiction,” Neil Wang, the Greater China president of consultancy firm Frost and Sullivan, told AFP. “There is [a large audience], including a large amount of teenagers during the Asian Games, and CCTV needs to take that into account,” he added. Tech giant Tencent also began placing controls on its games, including the smashhit “Honor of Kings”—the Chinese version of “Arena of Valor”—last year following concerns about marathon gaming by teenagers. Owing to China’s broadcast black-out, Chinese fans missed a showstopping moment at the Asian Games: the defeat of Faker’s six-man League of Legends team by Chinese opposition. AFP Rolando G. BUSH, OBAMA LEAD MCCAIN FAREWELL
W
ASHINGTON—Late US senator John McCain will receive his final public sendoff Saturday (Sunday in Manila) in a nationally televised ceremony featuring eulogies from two expresidents, but with current commander in chief Donald Trump conspicuously absent from the proceedings. Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Barack Obama will deliver remarks honoring their friend and former White House challenger, at a memorial service in Washington’s National Cathedral that McCain planned himself in recent months as he battled brain cancer. That the men who vanquished McCain in their presidential battles were asked to speak is testament to the former war
prisoner’s commitment to looking beyond party and signalling that Americans, regardless of political affiliation, are rowing together in the same boat. Amid today’s inflammatory political environment the message could serve as a soothing balm for a nation bruised by two years of divisive discourse. And the absence of Trump, whose bitter feud with McCain has wrangled US
politics during that time, will serve as a final rebuke of the president, highlighting the clash between a Republican elder statesman and the current president from his own party. McCain’s last public event, before he is laid to rest Sunday in a private ceremony at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, comes a day after he was accorded the rare recognition of lying in state in the US Capitol. While members of Congress honored one of their own in a touching ceremony that featured an address by Vice President Mike Pence, Trump was again not there. Instead he holed up in the White House and remained uncharacteristically silent on Twitter during the ceremony, before flying to a political event in North
Carolina later in the day. McCain’s widow Cindy, his seven children and his 106-year-old mother Roberta McCain joined scores of members of Congress, state governors, diplomats and other dignitaries at the somber Rotunda ceremony. Pence, in his tribute, told McCain’s family that “it is deeply humbling to stand before you today at the United States Capitol to commemorate the life and service of an American patriot.” “The president asked me to be here, on behalf of a grateful nation, to pay a debt of honor and respect to a man who served our country throughout his life, in uniform and in public office.” It was an awkward message to deliver from a president who has studiously refrained from praising McCain, either
during his illness or since his death. Their feud took root during Trump’s 2016 campaign, when he questioned the notion McCain was a war hero -- because he had been captured after his navy fighter jet was shot down over Hanoi in 1967. McCain pushed back in the following months, calling Trump’s behavior petty and “disgraceful,” and in one of his final acts in the Senate blocked the Republican effort to repeal Obama’s health care law known as Obamacare. - Presidential dreams dashed McCain the aviator spent more than five years in a Vietnamese prison camp, returning home to launch a political career that saw him eventually run for president in 2000 but lose the nomination to Bush. AMSTERDAM—Dutch police were investigating Saturday a suspected terror attack at Amsterdam’s Central Station, in which two people were stabbed before the knifeman was shot by police. The assailant was identified as an 19-year-old Afghan man with a German residency permit. “We are seriously taking into account that there was a terrorist motive,” Amsterdam police spokesman Frans Zuiderhoek told AFP. Earlier witnesses described scenes of panic as gunshots rang out and thousands of commuters and tourists were evacuated from the rail terminus shortly after midday. “A man in the west side tunnel of Amsterdam Central Station stabbed two other people and directly after that he was shot by the police,” another police spokesman Rob van der Veen said, adding terrorism was not being ruled out by investigators. “The two people are very badly injured, and they were
brought to the hospital,” he said. “We are looking at all scenarios, also the worst scenario, which is terrorism.” One witness said he saw a young man “stumble” into his flower shop at the station with a bleeding wound to his hand. “Shortly afterwards I heard some shots and I know something has gone badly wrong,” Richard Snelders told the ANP news agency. A while later he saw another man lying on the ground nearby, he said. “The first thing that comes up in your mind is that it’s a terror attack. After all, you are at Amsterdam Central Station. There was a lot of panic,” Snelders said. ‘Stay down’ Police quickly arrived at the scene with video images showing police ordering the suspect in English to “stay down” after he had been shot. Images posted on social media showed security guards ushering passengers towards exits and paramedics arriving at the scene with stretchers. AFP

STARS LAUD ARETHA AT MARATHON DETROIT FUNERAL DETROIT—Former presidents, stars and musical royalty paid joyous tribute to Aretha Franklin at her marathon funeral on Friday, leading her family and members of the public in bidding goodbye to America’s “Queen of Soul.” The formal part of the service stretching nearly eight hours, the celebration of the life and legacy of the US icon was packed with gospel, eulogies, music and sermons. The 76-year-old singer, beloved by millions around the world, died of cancer on August 16, closing the curtain on a glittering six-decade career that spanned gospel, R&B, jazz, blues and even classical music. Former US president Bill Clinton extolled her gifts, courage and compassion, sharing his memory of her final public performance, in November 2017, when she was already ill but performed with gusto. “I hope God will forgive me but I was so glad when I got here, and I hope you will forgive me, when the casket was still open because I said I wonder what my friend’s got on today,” he said to laughter. Franklin, loved not only for her
powerful voice but her civil rights work, was dressed in a different outfit for each of three days of public viewings, visited by thousands in her Michigan hometown. For the funeral, she was clothed in a sparkling golden dress. “She worked her can off to get where she was. She took the gift God gave her and she kept getting a little bigger every day,” said Clinton, playing a snatch of her singing “Think” on his cell phone. “It’s the key to freedom. God bless you, Aretha, we love you.” Letters from George W. Bush and Barack Obama were read out, praising her contribution to America. Gospel music and opera filled the rafters, congregants danced and one of her sons sang “Mercy Mercy Me.” - ‘Make love great again’ Franklin’s gold-plated casket was escorted out of the church at 6:45 pm (2245 GMT), a simple posy of roses on top, nearly eight hours after the service officially began at 11am. VIPs had been in place at 10am. Stevie Wonder performed a virtuoso harmonica solo and a rendition of his hit “As.” AFP

SAUDI WOMEN TASTE THRILL OF SPEED By Anuj Chopra RIYADH—Donning a helmet inside a pearl silver sports sedan, Rana Almimoni skids and drifts around a Riyadh park, engine roaring, tires screeching and clouds of dust billowing from the back. For Saudi women, such adrenaline rushes were unimaginable just weeks ago. Speed-crazed women drivers are bound to turn heads in the deeply conservative desert kingdom, which overturned the world’s only ban on female motorists in June as part of a much-hyped liberalization drive led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Almimoni, 30 and a motor racing enthusiast, is defying the perception—or sexist misconception, depending on who you ask—that only dainty cars in bright colors are popular with women drivers. “I adore speed. I love speed... My dream car is more than 500 horsepower,” said Almimoni, slamming the accelerator of her silvery sleek Kia Stinger inside Riyadh’s Dirab motor park. “It’s a myth... that Saudi women only choose pink and cute cars.” Almimoni said she was awaiting an expected government decision that would permit women to obtain a “racing license” which would allow her to hone her passion in motor-sport competitions. That includes drifting— oversteering the car to slip and skid or even spin, and other high-speed daredevilry—which is illegal in public but tolerated in the controlled environment of Dirab park, whose private owners insist on safety. Need for speed Author Pascal Menoret’s acclaimed book “Joyriding in Riyadh” described the highoctane Saudi obsession for drifting, long seen as a symbol of
revolt among legions of restless youth, as all “about being a real man.” Now newly mobile Saudi women are embracing what was previously deemed a male entitlement —speed. “Most of our inquiries [from women] are about drifting— how to learn drifting, which cars can they train on, how long will it take them” to drift, said instructor Falah al-Jarba as he watched Almimoni zip around the park. Auto showrooms tapping new women clients have rolled out a lineup of cherry red Mini Coopers, but sales professionals say many exhibit an appetite for muscle cars like the Camaro or the Mustang convertible. Many new drivers seek inspiration from Aseel alHamad, the first female member of the kingdom’s national motor federation, who got behind the wheel of a Formula One car in France in June to mark the end of the driving ban. Clad in skinny jeans and Harley-Davidson T-shirts, a handful of women are also training to ride motorbikes at a Riyadh driving school, a scene that is still a stunning anomaly in the conservative petro-state. Transport authorities have rolled out racing simulators to help first-time women drivers get a feel of being behind the wheel. As a male traffic official demonstrated the importance of seatbelts by buckling up inside a car tethered to a flat platform and upturning the vehicle, some women zipped around twisted tracks in toy cars. Another sat down behind the wheel of a simulator and instantly floored the accelerator, sending the speedometer soaring. “I don’t feel I’m in Saudi Arabia anymore,” said Nagwa Mousa, a 57-year-old university professor in Riyadh. “But I don’t expect to see many

women in Saudi Arabia overtaking and speeding in the streets anytime soon.” The driving reform is said to be transformative for women, freeing them from dependence on private chauffeurs or male relatives, but many are keeping off the streets. “Congratulate me, finally saw a female driving! Although she is Bahraini but it counts as she is driving in Saudi land,” comedian Yaser Bakr said on Twitter after the ban was lifted. No ‘free speech’ For now, most women drivers appear to be those who have swapped foreign licenses for Saudi ones after undergoing a practical test. Many complain that driving courses cost several times more than those available to men and that women
instructors are in short supply. While no overt incidents of street harassment have been reported publicly, many women are also wary of pervasive sexism and aggression from male drivers despite warnings from authorities. Also testing nerves is the government’s sweeping crackdown on women activists who long opposed the driving ban and a long-vilified system of male “guardians”—fathers, husbands or other male relatives, whose permission is required to travel or get married. “The Saudi government is expanding entertainment options for Saudi women but eliminating space for political expression,” said Kristin Diwan, of the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington. “Lady drifters can feel the speed but not free speech.” AFP
BOAT CUISINE: SUPERCHEF DUCASSE TAKES TO THE WATER By Katy Lee PARIS—Still smarting from being kicked out of his Michelin-starred restaurant halfway up the Eiffel Tower, France’s most famous chef Alain Ducasse is pressing on instead with a new restaurant almost directly underneath it— and, he boasts, it floats. Ducasse, who has won a total 21 Michelin stars—more than any other chef alive—will be dishing up lobster and duck foie gras onboard an electric boat on the River Seine from Sept. 10. “It’s accessible, contemporary French high gastronomy—on a boat,” he told AFP at a table for two onboard the 130-seat Ducasse Sur Seine, which will trundle along the river as diners tuck in. “It’s surely the most extraordinary architectural and cultural trip you can have on a river anywhere in the world,” he said. It is perhaps cruel that the 38-meter (125-foot) boat docks just in front of the French capital’s most famous monument, given that Ducasse went to court this month to challenge his eviction from its onestar Jules Verne restaurant. He was said to be livid after fellow star chefs Frederic Anton and Thierry Marx won a ten-year tenure to run the Eiffel Tower’s gastronomic restaurant, where he cooked for US President Donald Trump during his visit last year. Asked about the setback, Ducasse’s communications chief tried to stop him answering. But the chef insisted on addressing a defeat which he is still struggling to digest. From his boat, “I see the Eiffel Tower and more—I can see all the monuments of Paris,” he said pointedly. “The Eiffel Tower is in a fixed location. Another beautiful story is just beginning.” Greener and healthier In court, Ducasse’s lawyers argued that the 61-year-old was “the
most-starred chef in the world” after the death this month of fellow culinary legend Joel Robuchon, and accused the consulting company used for the Eiffel Tower tendering process of a conflict of interest. He has suffered setbacks before in a four-decade career that has spawned some 30 restaurants around the globe: his first New York venture Essex House flopped upon its launch in 2000 amid ridicule about its astronomical prices. Lunch onboard the glass-walled boat, an idea Ducasse first dreamed up five years ago, will start at 100 euros ($117), and dinner from 150 euros. Both will feature a one-and-a-half hour loop of the Seine, past monuments including the Louvre and Notre Dame cathedral, timed at night to bring diners back for the sparkling of the Eiffel Tower’s lights upon the hour.
Some critics complain that Ducasse, who became a citizen of low-tax Monaco in 2008, is rarely in the kitchen himself. The boat will be no different: He has charged his former sous-chef Francis Fauvel with the food. The menu will be “a celebration of the seasons and local products”—even taking its honey from Parisian hives—and with less of the meat and heavy sauces traditionally associated with fine French cooking. “We decided to take out the sugar, the salt and the fat, to be in sync with a society that’s changing,” he said, naming “a very beautiful turbot in a champagne sauce” as one of his favorite dishes. Aside from local sourcing, Ducasse boasts of his electric boat’s green credentials and how silently it cuts through the Seine. “The direction the world is going in is not to pollute, not to make noise,” he
said. Ducasse, who has sent food to astronauts onboard the International Space Station, is dismissive of the idea that producing haute cuisine might prove more difficult on a boat than on dry land. A 36-strong team of chefs and pastry cooks will prepare everything either on the jetty or in kitchens in the belly of the 300-ton vessel, which has a wine cellar kept to standard temperatures. Known for his fastidious attention to detail—even fretting over whether the curtain rods of his restaurants are right —he is at pains to distinguish his flashily decorated new eatery from the existing river boats offering dinner cruises along the Seine. “I was a consultant on the boats of Paris, and I think that has made me want to do better,” he said. “It’s a floating restaurant, not a boat or a barge where you get fed.” AFP
EPIC, EXTREME FILM-ART PROJECT TO REBUILD BERLIN WALL By Frank Zeller BERLIN—A massive film-art project in the German capital is set to rebuild part of the Berlin Wall to create a closed-off mini-state, complete with visa checks, organizers said Tuesday. The walled-in “city within a city” will host the world premiere of the mysterious and mammoth “DAU” film project and social experiment of enigmatic Russian filmmaker Ilya Khrzhanovsky, 43. Pending final approval from Berlin city authorities, which organizers said was “in the works,” staff plan to erect 900 concrete wall slabs, each 3.60 meters (about 12 feet) tall, for the 6.6 million euro ($7.7 million) event. Visitors to the parallel world will have to apply online for entrance “visas” and swap their cellphones for off-line digital devices with an algorithm that will suggest a personalized tour. Set on a city block on Unter den Linden boulevard, the time-capsule project is due to launch on Oct. 12 and will end with a ritualistic tearing down of the wall on Nov. 9, the day of the historic event in 1989. The aim is not to create “a Disney GDR” (German Democratic Republic), said Thomas Oberender, director of culture festival Berliner Festspiele which will host the mega-event. “It is not a film premiere but a mixture of social experiment, artistic experiment and... an impressive form of world-building,” he told a Berlin press conference. The aim, said organizers, is to spark “a political and social debate about freedom and totalitarianism, surveillance, co-existence and national identity.” ‘Most insane film shoot’ Long shrouded in mystery, a trickle of news and cryptic clues has created buzz and sparked controversy about the project, with critics labelling it a stunt hurtful to people who lived in communist East Germany. “Out of respect for the victims who really experienced such situations, we should step away from this,” Berlin politician Sabina Bangert of the Greens party said, according to Tagesspiegel daily. Others are excited about a conventionbusting art event that will evoke, but not seek to replicate, the Cold War past of Berlin. Germany’s minister of culture, Monika Gruetters, said she was “absolutely convinced this will be a world event.” Lending star power to the project are conductor Teodor Currentzis, composer Brian Eno, director Tom Tykwer, performance artist Marina Abramovic, the band Massive Attack and, according to German news agency DPA, the legendary anonymous street artist Banksy. Berlin’s “DAU-Freedom” is set to kick off follow-up events in Paris in November (“DAU-Equality”) and London in early 2019 (“DAU-Fraternity”), all organized by the London-based Phenomen Trust, co-founded by Russian millionaire Sergey Adoniev. The epic “DAU” film project, more than a decade in the making, has been labelled “Apocalypse Dau: the most insane film shoot of all time” by Britain’s Daily Telegraph. Dau was the nickname of Soviet nuclear physicist and Nobel laureate Lev Landau (1908-68), one of the fathers of the Russian nuclear bomb and an advocate of free love. The project started in 2005 as a conventional biopic, with funding from several European countries, but evolved into what Caravan magazine labeled a “brutal and baroque movie project/human experiment.” ‘Experiment is ongoing’ Hundreds of amateur actors were asked to live full-time from 2009-2011 in a mock-up secret Soviet nuclear research facility dubbed “The Institute” that was built in Ukraine. Participants reportedly had to dress, speak and act as if living under the Soviet regime, with penalties for using cellphones or social media. They wore scratchy underwear, ate tinned food, used roubles, carried ID cards and endured other privations of bleak Soviet life. “They fell in love, betrayed friends, cheated on their partners, conducted experiments, were arrested, gave birth to children, grew older,” says the event’s press release. Veteran cinematographer Juergen Juerges, who spent three years on the set, said the aim was to shoot their unscripted interactions “everywhere, anytime... They lived, and we filmed them.” A rare journalist to visit the site, from GQ magazine, wrote that Khrzhanovsky was ever-present, projecting “a carefully crafted self-portrait of a tyrannical genius.” At the end, Khrzhanovsky reportedly had neo-Nazis destroy the elaborate set. The resulting over 700 hours of footage have been edited into 13 feature films, several TV series and are due to appear in an online multimedia project, said producer Susanne Marian. “The experiment is ongoing,” promises a trailer on the project website (https://dau.xxx/). Reclusive Khrzhanovsky did not attend the Berlin press event. Oberender thanked the “very many people who for months, and up to two years, didn’t speak about this project—a small miracle in a city like Berlin.” AFP

FORMER DANCER NOW RAISES HAPPY CHICKENS By Joyce Pangco Pañares
T
Lundgreen’s Capital founder and CEO Peter Lundgreen
INA Morados’ laughter can easily fill a crowded room. She pokes fun at herself, mostly – at how she looks like the African-American singer Tina Turner (which she used as her Facebook name) but can’t carry a tune if her life depended on it; at how she danced her way out of poverty; and at how she personally castrates the male chickens at Pamora Farm when there are requests from clients for bigger-sized poultry meat.
INVESTMENT GURU SEES MORE RISKS EMERGING IN PH
Make no mistake about it: this Abra-born entrepreneur who had to start working at the tender age of 15 years is dead serious when it comes to making her business of organic freerange chicken farming grow. Morados used her earnings as a professional dancer in Japan and as a former member of the local group Power Dance to buy a lot in her hometown. Together with her husband Gérard Papillon, she established Pamora Farm, a portmanteau of their family names Papillon and Morados. The couple started to raise free-range chickens in 2000 in just a 1,000-square-meter piece of land, with the initial objective of having their own source of organically grown chickens. “I didn’t have money at first. I only knew how to dance,” she recalled during a private lunch with select journalists, chefs and restaurateurs at The Peninsula Manila, a client of Pamora Farm. When friends and relatives heard of the couple’s free-range chicken and started ordering, that’s when Morados knew she had, so to speak, stumbled on the chicken that lays golden eggs. Pamora Farm follows the French Label Rouge standards and grows their premium chicken (1 kg to 1.850 kg) for a minimum of 81 days, without injecting any hormones or other chemicals to hasten the growth process. “We allow the body of the chicken to develop naturally so when you eat free-range chicken, you’ll notice that the bones are stronger and do not easily break,” Morados said. To boost the immune system of the chicken, the couple use herbal concoctions from organic herbs and plants found in their farm such as oregano, ginger, chili, lemongrass and kakawate (madre de cacao). “These prevent them from getting sick, thus eliminating the need for synthetic veterinary medicines,” she said. Pamora free-range chickens have only eight to 10 percent fat content versus the 19 to 29 percent in commercial chicken. “They’re also more flavorful because they eat more herbs and grass during the growing stages. You don’t need to use artificial flavorings like chicken cubes when cooking,” she said. According to The Peninsula M anila’s executive chef Franco Diaz, partnering with Pamora Farms has resulted in delicious and healthy dishes served in all outlets of the hotel, including chicken adobo (using thigh and leg choice cuts), sesame chicken salad (using breast choice cuts), chicken and waffles (using chicken

oysters), Tandoori chicken (using wing and lollipop choice cuts), chicken roulade (using whole chicken) and chicken sliders (using ready-made chicken burger). Being a pioneer of free-range poultry farming in the Philippines and compliant with French standards, Morados’ innovations earned her a Knight in Order with Merits in Agriculture from the French Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in 2008, a prestigious award that is rarely accorded to non-French nationals. Her Pamora Farm journey likewise landed her a feature in Joey Concepcion’s 2013 Go Negosyo book, 50 Inspiring Stories of Agri-Entrepreneurs. Pamora Farm has invested in production process standardization that complies with both local and international standards, being the only National Meat Inspection Services-accredited “AA” poultry dressing plant in the Cordillera region. Class “AA” refers to farms with sufficiently
adequate facilities and operational procedures such that the livestock or poultry slaughtered is suitable for sale in any market within the country. It is also the only dressing plant in the Philippines that caters exclusively to free-range chickens using air-dry chilling process that is compliant with European Union standards on poultry dressing facilities. “We don’t want to use the water chilling process where the chickens are soaked in icedwater with chlorine for two to three hours. Air-dry chilling maintains the freshness and taste of the chicken. Because no water is absorbed by the chicken, the meat does not shrink when cooked,” Morados said. The dressing plant is also complete with blast freezing equipment and cold storage, with the meat packed in re-sealable bags. Morados, who admits that the farm is still unable to supply the demand for free-range chickens despite distributing as much as 10,000 chickens monthly to supermarkets, restaurants, hotels, and gourmet stores, said there is still much room for expansion. “We don’t want to take shortcuts just to meet the demand. We want to remain true to our principles,” she said. “Chicken farming is not just a business for us. It is our passion. We eat what we produce,” Morados said.
CHEF PURSUES CULINARY EXCELLENCE GROWING up in a family with a strong passion for food and a catering business, it was easy for Chef Jasper Versoza to figure out his dream. When he was a kid, the smell of freshly cooked dishes was giving him a different kind of excitement. His appetite for excellence, however, motivated him to learn more. He knew he could only find it outside their home kitchen. “I knew I wanted to cook since I can remember. But I wanted more than that. It has always been my desire to give unique twists to dishes and make food experience more satisfying,”said Chef Jasper Versoza, executive chef of Josiah’s Catering. Chef Jasper has always been hungry for new knowledge. He believes that continuous learning is essential to success and important to offer something original to foodies. Despite his exposure to their catering business, he strived to broaden his experience and
refine his culinary and entrepreneurial skills at the Center for Culinary Arts, Manila. “I had to get the best training I could to become the professional chef I have always dreamed of – innovative and explorative. The journey was tough, but it’s all worth it. I have learned a lot about culinary in both theory and practice. Most importantly, I was able to apply everything I have learned in our catering business,” Chef Jasper said. True enough, his education enabled him to improve the quality of service of Josiah’s Catering by adopting the latest food and catering equipment as well as following the best practices in culinary arts. For Chef Jasper, food and geography are related to each other. So, he explores places – both local and international – to taste what each destination has to offer. When he travels, Chef Jasper looks for new

inspirations, which he applies to his food creations as part of his desire to innovate. He does not only explore food and cuisines, but he also immerses in different cultures to gain new ideas he can mix with his food and restaurant concepts. Turn to C2
PETER Lundgreen, the chief executive of Copenhagen-based investment advisory firm Lundgreen’s Capital, sees more risks emerging in the Philippines where the peso could end 2018 at a 20-year low of 55 against the US dollar. “Since the start of this year, we forecasted that the peso-dollar should reach 55. And there is no reason to change that. I think this is where we could be at yearend. Part of the explanation this year is that the dollar in general has gone up, not only against the peso. But there is also some capital outflow from the Philippines,” Lundgreen says in an interview in Makati City. The peso closed at 53.475 against the greenback Friday. The six-footthree investment banker says there is a direct link between the level of interest rate and the value of the peso. Lundgreen says the tightening liquidity in the US would further affect Asian emerging markets such as the Philippines. “Based on last year, the Philippine central bank was behind the curve. So what the central bank has done so far with 100 basis points [increase] is just to compensate for what was missing at the maximum. But the US central bank has hiked as well this year. There are still hikes to come, to follow,” he says. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, he says, needs to do more adjustments with the overnight borrowing rate of 4 percent still much lower than the 5.7 percent inflation rate reported in July. “If they want to show sort of they are on top of things, the work is not done yet,” he says. Lundgreen’s Capital is regulated by Danish financial authority ‘Finanstilsynet’ and has a license to offer individual investment advice and risk management consulting in the European Union. It also has an office in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City which Lundgreen visits three or four times a year, to monitor the situation in Asia, including China. Lundgreen says the Brexit, or the impending exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union, the US-China trade war and the tightening US dollar liquidity are some of the external threats that could affect emerging markets such as the Philippines. Lundgreen says with the general strength of the US dollar against most currencies, investors were looking at the Bangko Sentral to defend the position of the peso through interest rate hike. “I have argued that the BSP has been behind with hiking rates. Now all of a sudden they have been very busy. But the thing is the US has been continuously hiking as well. I know that the Philippine economy is not a slave of US monetary policy. But any emerging market has a bigger dependency on US dollar liquidity. It just means so much more on Asian emerging markets on their currency,” he says. “The Philippine central bank, in my perspective, was too weak, in particular last year. They were too afraid of the government. They should have shown the strength at that time. That would have comforted investors. And we see what happens,” he says. “I have sort of raised my concert a bit since early this year. We are seeing more bits and pieces that could lead to a currency crisis. It does not mean that the Philippines is on its way to a crisis. It is just we are seeing the risks as different, from being sort of a lower risk going to a more below moderate to moderate risk,” says Lundgreen. “This is partly due to the central bank being too slow. That’s my view,” he says. Roderick T. dela Cruz

FLOIRENDOS RAISING FUND FOR SCHOLARS DAVAO del Norte Rep. Antonio Floirendo, Jr. bared his plan to use the P15-million in damages that he expects to collect from a libel suit he filed against former speaker Pantaleon Alvarez as fund for scholars in his congressional district. Floirendo filed before the Quezon City prosecutors several libel cases against the former House leader on Aug. 20, including the suit citing in numerous instances the imputation that the Floirendos as land-grabbers. Floirendo said that in filing the case against Alvarez, who is also a fellow congressman from Davao del Norte, he was not suing for money, but for principle. “On top of this, I wanted Alvarez punished for desecrating the memory of my father, Don Antonio Floirendo Sr. and for maliciously maligning the entire Floirendo family as landgrabbers,” he said. He said that because the amount involved is big, he planned to create a foundation to manage the fund which would solely be used for poor but deserving students. “The fund will be divided into two. Half of the money will fund scholars going to college and the other half for students wanting to study in Tesdaaccredited vocational courses,” he said.

INVENTOR ENDORSES BATON AS ALTERNATIVE TO FIREARMS A
LEADER of Filipino inventors endorses the use of Probaton, or the police reconnaissance operation baton, as an alternative to firearms in village patrol and security.
Filipino Inventors Society Producers Cooperative president and chief executive Francisco ‘Popoy’ Pagayon, who recently celebrated his 72nd birthday, said that instead of using guns, barangay tanods should be equipped with Probatons to fight or prevent crimes. He said barangay tanods or watchmen are the ones who do actual rounds in the community and are the first to respond to crimes in villages. Pagayon said equipping them with truncheons would also avoid deadly confrontation and panic among residents. “We should provide barangay tanods with weapons because they are the ones who are exposed to harm from criminals. They are the ones going around the communities and the first to respond to any call for assistance from residents,” he said. Pagayon said that once armed with
Probaton, barangay tanods would be better equipped to respond to crimes and enforce peace and order in the communities. Pagayon first designed a police truncheon in 1978 and received a patent for it in 1994. Probaton is one of the eight inventions that Pagayon is credited for. Aside from Probaton, Pagayon is also the inventor of Portasol, a multi-purpose solar thermal post-harvest speed dry tray, which saves space and ensures the high quality of products while drying grains or fish. The Department of Science and Technology recently distributed 80 Portasol multi-purpose solar drying trays in Cagayan Valley region to reduce port-harvest losses among farmers and help fishers in dried fish production. Engineer Sancho Mabborang, DOST Region 2 director, described Portasol as a cost-effective technology that can boost productivity of famers and fishermen in the region. The regional office of DOST distributed the 80 Portasol portable, multi-purpose solar drying trays during the recent celebration of the Region 2 Science and Technology Week hosted by Gonzaga, Cagayan mayor Marilyn Pentecostes.
Of the 80 Portasol units, 50 were provided to the Cagayan provincial government, 20 to Gonzaga town and 10 to the Gonzaga Fisherfolks Association. Pagayon hopes that more towns and provinces will utilize Portasol as a costefficient technology intervention in food processing. DOST Secretary Fortunato dela Pena earlier endorsed Portasol as a solar drying option for the various crops and products that can also prevent unnecessary vehicular accidents caused by highway or roadside palay and corn drying. Another popular invention of Pagayon is the Ambidex convertible school chair, which can be adjusted for left or right-handed use. He also invented Reverse Applied Retro Reflective Elements on Alphanumerics for vehicle license plates and Green-Grow gardening and reforestation tool kit. He also built products such as whistle for exclusive use of the police and flash light for traffic enforcers. Recently, he developed new products such as solar-powered lighting systems with multi-purpose chargers, solar-powered street lamps and rescue boats with solarpowered lighting systems.

IDPA DP4400 also offers built-in cloud readiness features with disaster recovery and long-term data retention to the cloud. “For years, mid-size organizations haven’t quite had a comprehensive data protection solution that was sized and priced right for them,” said Beth Phalen, President, Data Protection, Dell EMC. “With the IDPA DP4400 there are no compromises. We’re delivering a converged data protection solution that’s as simple to use as it is powerful—with support for the largest application ecosystem and expansion to the cloud. The IDPA DP4400 offers the right level of modern features and capabilities for mid-size data centers at the lowest cost to protect.” Simple and Powerful, at the Lowest Cost to Protect The IDPA DP4400 blends simplicity and performance for mid-size organizations and remote office-branch office (ROBO) environments. shift, customers demand more engagements that is why we are constantly introducing cutting-edge products and solutions that can help not just meet their expectations but also, to exceed their vision," said Eduardo Bonoan, Director of Marketing Division of Epson Philippines. Among the products featured by Epson during the event are its advanced solutions, from its range of Point-of-Sale (POS) receipt, Label, and inkjet printers, to some of its latest projectors, such as the Interactive and LightScene projectors. “With our obsession to details, Epson combines inventiveness in technology with equally inquisitive insight to understand, anticipate, and overcome the new and evolving challenges of our customers. We always engineer effective and compelling solutions that yield both performance gains and cutting-edge advances that enable new possibilities," added Bonoan.
WHEN it comes to scams like hacking, phishing, and baiting, most of us see ourselves as the last person to fall victim to such scams. But this is exactly the kind of thinking that social engineers bank on. Social engineering is the act of tricking someone into sharing private information, by exploiting specific qualities of human decisionmaking known as cognitive biases. While hackers attack and circumvent computer and online systems to steal information, social engineers instead manipulate people into granting legitimate access to confidential information. And although social engineers mostly use technology to carry out their attacks, their deception has spread online and offline. Our best defense against these attacks, therefore, is to educate ourselves so that we recognize them as they happen. Here are the most common attacks, how to spot them, and avoid being a victim: Phishing—Phishing is the most common social engineering scheme, where an attacker sends an e-mail, IM, comment, or text message that appears to come from a legitimate, popular company, bank, school, or any other institution. In a phishing attack, recipients are tricked into sharing confidential information, such as credit card or bank account numbers and PINs. People can be tricked into sharing information through messages saying there is a problem that requires them to "verify" information by clicking on the displayed link and providing information using their form. They may even ask for aid or support for a disaster, political campaign, or charity. Spear phishing—Spear phishing is a highly targeted type of phishing attack that focuses on a specific individual or organization. Social engineers use personal information that is specific to the recipient in order to gain trust and appear legitimate. This information can come from recipients’ social media accounts. Because these attacks are more specific, chances of success for attackers are much higher. Baiting—Attackers who use this technique rely on the assumption that if they dangle something people want, the latter will likely take the bait. They take advantage as well of people’s natural curiosity by leaving a malwareinfected device (like a USB or CD) in a public space, like a bathroom or a cafeteria, where someone will likely find it. A baiting attack hinges on the premise that the person who finds the device will load it into his computer and unknowingly install the malware. Pretexting—Pretexting happens when social engineers make up a story with the goal of fooling recipients into providing access to confidential information. For example, they could pretend that they are part of a company’s IT department in order to acquire the recipient’s passwords or other confidential information. Tailgating—Tailgating is a physical social engineering tactic wherein an unauthorized individual follows authorized individuals into a secure location. An example of tailgating is when someone asks a recipient to hold the door open because they forgot their access card or asks to borrow your phone or laptop to send an email or quickly google something, but instead installs malware or steals data from the device.

guide what else there was to see in Kuala Lumpur, he immediately suggested that we take a look at putrajaya and insisted that it is a “must-visit” attraction. sure enough, we were awed by the city’s contemporary architecture, even while we were still crossing the bridge to the city. In fact, the bridge itself has an ultra-modern look. driving into the city, we immediately headed to its piece de resistance, the perdana putra which sits on a hill, lording over the entire place. Its emerald green dome highlights the eclectic mix of muslim, malaysian, and european influence in its architecture. From its massive gates starts the city’s main boulevard that stretches straight down the length of the city for approximately two kilometers. at the other end of this main boulevard is the beautiful putrajaya International Convention Center which also sits on top of a hill and has a strikingly distinctive design. Inaugurated in 2004, the structure looks like a round malay royal belt buckle and, to avoid the monotony of a flat rounded ceiling, the roof is shaped like a folded origami.

YOUR weekend CHUCkLe at a wedding, a little boy looks at his mom and asks, “mommy, why is the girl dressed all in white?” His mom answers, “the girl is in white because she’s very happy, and this is the happiest day of her life.” the boy nods and continues, “Ok, and why is the boy all in black?”
the center’s plenary Hall can accommodate 3,000 conference delegates, and the banquet Hall right next to it can also take in the same number of people at any given time. among its many avant garde facilities are individual rooms for a total of 13 different language interpreters. Our last stop was the putra mosque which can easily be identified from afar because of its single minaret and its pink dome, which is actually made of rose-tinted granite. this structure is large enough to accommodate 15,000 worshippers at any given time. since each person who enters the prayer hall is required to put on a red robe and hood, to be borrowed from the management’s office, my son and I decided not to go in and just take photos from across the garden separating the hall and the main entrance. as we left the city, I felt a little envious of our malaysian neighbors. they have already hurdled the challenges of the past and the present, and are now ready for the future. I am not going to compare ourselves to them and rant on why the crooked ways of our past continue to keep us in shackles. I’d rather praise and wish well our malaysian brothers for leading the way to the future, as I express my fervent hope that we finally will move forward by having faith in our leader, and make the future very much a part of our present. For feedback, I’m at bobzozobrado@gmail.com.

THE London Film Festival said Thursday it was championing female directors, as half of the official competition films were made by women. Around 38 percent of the movies screened across the whole festival are directed by women, up from 24 percent last year. The 62nd London Film Festival, which runs from Oct. 10 to 21, features 225 movies from 77 different countries. It will showcase films including the world premiere of Peter Jackson’s They Shall Not Grow Old, marking the centenary of the end of World War I. The film features restored and hand-colored archive footage, bringing to life the realities of death and survival in the trenches. The festival kicks off on the red carpet with the European premiere of Oscar-winning director Steve McQueen’s Widows, starring Viola Davis, Liam Neeson and Colin Farrell. Can You Ever Forgive Me? by director Marielle Heller, a darkly humorous biopic about an audacious literary forger, starring Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant, gets a headline gala screening. Capernaum by Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki, the Cannes Film Festival’s Jury Prize winner which depicts a journey into subterranean areas of Beirut, gets the Debate Gala screening slot. The world premiere of Stan and Ollie, about the Laurel and Hardy double-act’s 1953 UK tour, closes the festival, which is run by the British Film Institute (BFI). Ten films are in the official competition, including Chinese director Zhang Yimou’s thriller Shadow, and The Old Man and the Gun starring Robert Redford, Sissy Spacek and Casey Affleck. Five of the 10 films have female directors or co-directors, with movies by Cristina Gallego, Karyn Kusama, Alice Rohrwacher, Sudabeh Mortezai and Dominga Sotomayor. “Of all the films in the world, we have selected a very small number of films to be in the competition -- because we see something special in these directors’ work -- and 5 0 percent of them are women. I think that speaks volumes,” said the BFI’s chief executive Amanda Nevill. AFP Lebanese actress Nadine Labaki who won the Jury Prize at the Cannes film festival, will present her award-winning film 'Capharnaum' at the London festival which is championing female directors this year.

A Blood tEst is good For your doggo pet tales

(Part 2)
NDERSTANDING YOUR DOG’S BLOOD TEST helps you understand the condition of your dog and the treatment plan if needed. Drake Center for Veterinary Care stressed that “arresting and treating whatever a blood test indicates takes an informed and concerted team effort.” There are two kinds of blood tests: a Complete Blood Count (CBC) and/ or a Blood Chemistry (serum) test. The Drake Center said the CBC shows : *the dog's hydration status, * if the dog is anemic *if the dog has an infection, *the blood clotting ability, and, *the immune system response. A CBC is done if the dog has the following symptoms: *fever, *vomiting, *diarrhea, *weakness, *pale gums, or *loss of appetite. The Drake Center added that a CBC detects bleeding disorders or unseen abnormalities which the vet needs to know prior to a surgery. The Drake Center explained the CBC provides detailed information including: § Hematocrit (HCT): This measures the percentage of red blood cells to detect anemia and hydration. § Hemoglobin and mean corpulscular hemoglobin concentration (Hb and MCHC) or the oxygen-carrying pigments of red blood cells. § White blood cell count (WBC): This measures the body's immune cells. An increase or decrease indicate certain diseases or infections. § Granulocytes and lymphocytes/ monocytes (GRANS and L/M) or specific types of white blood cells. § Eosinophils (EOS) or a specific type of white blood cells that may indicate allergic or parasitic conditions. § Platelet count (PLT): This measures cells that form blood clots. § Reticulocytes (RETICS) or the immature red blood cells. High lev-
Diamond was pregnant when Save ALL Inc. rescued her from the pound on Oct. 1, 2014. She gave birth 12 days later or on Oct. 13 in the clinic. Unfortunately, two of her three babies died in the clinic. Only one-- Milky-- survived and has been adopted. Diamond is brought to the clinic every year for a blood test as she is already a senior dog. She loves car rides.
els show regenerative anemia. § Fibrinogen (FIBR): This test provides vital information on blood clotting. High levels usually mean a dog is 30 to 40 days pregnant. On the other hand, a Blood Chemistry, or blood serum test, is done to evaluate a dog's organ function, electrolyte status, and hormone levels, among others. This test is done to: *evaluate the health of older dogs; * when a dog vomits, has diarrhea, has been exposed to toxins; *to monitor a dog who is on a long-term medication; and *to know the general health condition of a dog before giving anesthesia prior to sugery. The blood chemistry, Drake Center said, provides vital information such as: *Albumin (ALB): This serum protein helps evaluate hydration, hemorrhage and intestinal, liver and kidney disease. § Alkaline phosphatase (ALKP): An increase may indicate liver damage, Cushing's disease or active
bone growth in a young dog. § Alanine aminotansferase (ALT): This can determine active liver damage, but does not show the cause. § Amylase (AMYL): An increase indicates pancreatitis or kidney disease. § Aspartate aminotransferase (AST): An elevation may indicate liver, heart or skeletal muscle damage. § Blood urea nitrogen (BUN): This determines kidney function. An increase is called azotemia and can be caused by kidney, liver and heart disease as well as urethral obstruction, shock or dehydration. § Calcium (Ca): An increase or decrease can indicate different diseases like tumors, hyperparathyroidism, kidney disease, and low albumin. These are a few of the conditions that alter serum calcium. § Cholesterol (CHOL): The result supplements diagnosis of hypothyroidism, liver disease, Cushing's disease and diabetes mellitus. § Chloride (Cl): This is an electrolyte that is usually lost when a dog is vomiting or has illnesses such as Addison's disease. An increase often indicates dehydration.
§ Coristol (CORT) is a hormone that is measured in tests for Cushing's disease (the low-dose dexamethasone suppression test) and Addison's disease (ACTH stimulation test). § Creatinine (CREA) shows the kidney function and helps distinguish between kidney and non-kidney causes of elevated BUN. § Gamma Glutamy transferase (GGT is an enzyme that indicates liver disease or corticosteroid excess. § Globulin (GLOB) is a blood protein that often increases with chronic inflammation and certain disease states. § Glucose (GLU) is a blood sugar. An increase may indicate diabetes mellitus. A low level can cause collapse, seizure, or coma. § Potassium (K) is an electrolyte usually lost with symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea or excessive urination. An increase may indicate kidney failure, Addison's disease, dehydration or urethral obstruction. It can also lead to cardiac arrest. § Lipase (LIP is an enzyme that may indicate pancreatitis. § Sodium (Na) is an electrolyte usually lost due to vomiting, diarrhea, kidney disease and Addison's disease. The level shows the hydration status. § Phosphorus (PHOS): An increase may indicate a kidney disease, hyperthyroidism and bleeding disorders. § Total bilirubin (TBIL): An increase may indicate liver or hemolytic disease. This helps identify bile duct problems and certain types of anemia. § Total protein: This indicates hydration status and provides additional information on the liver, kidneys and infectious diseases. § Thyroxine (T4) is a thyroid hormone. A decrease often signal hypothyroidism in dogs. Your vet will know which blood test is needed or if both tests will be done. Please always ask your vet to explain the results to you. The result indicates if a value is high or low and the correlation of the said values. From there, you can discuss with your vet the best treatment plan for your dog. Your vet will ask if you can give medicine in tablet or liquid form. Some dogs keep a tablet hidden inside their mouth and will spit them when you are not looking. If your dog does this, please ask your vet for an alternative medicine which you can put in a syringe to give to your dog, or you can put the medicine (powdered or liquid) in a small amount of food first if the medicine can be given with the food. There are meds that must be given after a meal. Again, please ask your vet.
My Furry BEstiE
THIS corner features pets of animal lovers every week. We hope new owners and those thinking of getting a pet will be encouraged to be responsible “furparents” through these features. We also hope more people will be moved to be kind to animals when they read about the great relationship that can be created between humans and animals. For contributions, please email to daycarlos28@yahoo.com and put My Furry Bestie as subject.
HERO, now two year old, was given to Rollyn Mensalves de Luna by a friend because Hero’s mom gave birth to six (6) furkids and Rollyn’s friend could not take care of all the babies. Rollyn's friend looked for persons who can love the furbabies for life. Today,“Hero is the stress reliever of our family,” Rollyn says.
Remember LOKI? He just turned five months old. He still loves to cuddle with his furmom Hazel Dellera Layagin and to play with his fursiblings.
Caring for a senior dog: ExErcisE
Silver, rescued by Save ALL Inc.- Save Animals of Love and Light from the pound in Octiber 2014, survived many illnesses she got while in "prison" such as erlichia (dengue in humans) and severe bacterial infection. She was also exposed to the fatal distemper virus. Today, she is estimated to be around 14-16 years old. She still loves to walk but the distance and length of time are now limited. She is also brought to a place far from the metropolis with lots of trees. She enjoys the fresh air there and the car ride going to the place.
MOST humans tend to forget that puppies grow up into adults, the same way human kids grow up into human adults. If there are senior humans, there are senior dogs. This is why humans who are thinking of getting a dog for a pet is strongly encouraged to first read up on proper dog care before getting one. Once she or he is willing to take care of a dog despite the time, effort, and funds needed, then she can start looking for the kind of dog she or he feels is right for her/him. An asong Pinoy (aspin) is different from a shih tzu, and a shih tzu is different from a chow chow in terms of food they need, and the environment they can thrive in, among others. One has to choose well based on his/her lifestyle and financial capability to take care of a certain kind of dog. Taking care of a pup is not easy. It is like taking care of a human baby. Taking care of an adult dog is more difficult because the dog can not tell you what it wants. It can only bark and if the owner has not observed his dog well, it will be difficult for the owner to understand what the dog is trying to tell his owner. Now taking care of a senior dog is the most difficult part. By this time, the owner has grown to really love his/her dog, thus the emotional attachment is deep.
Dogs have a short lifespan than humans. One has to learn to enjoy each moment with his/her dog as dogs do go before humans. Before getting a dog, please ask yourself: *Can I provide good food and vitamins? *Do I have the time to bathe him, have him groomed, play with him and walk him? *Do I have the funds to bring him to the vet and have him treated when he gets sick? *Am I willing to go the extra mile to care for him when he gets old? Am I willing to spend more time with a senior dog and give more love to an old dog who might go anytime? Am I willing to spend funds to make his/her last years comfortable? If you can, you are one such loving human and may your tribe increase. If you can not, your honesty is admirable and please get a dog only when you are ready for a lifetime commitment. For the next five Sundays, Pets Page will give you tips on how to care for your senior dog. Caring for an old dog is much different from caring for a younger one, and requires more attention, time, and funds for supplements, among others. One of the things an owner has to remember is that a senior dog still needs EXERCISE. But in moderation. Just like a senior human, a senior dog can not jump as high or run as fast as younger dogs. Thus,
his/her exercise should be tailored for his/her age. The Drake Center for Veterinary Care notes: “exercise is still an essential component of any senior dog care regimen. Dogs tend to age better both physically and mentally when daily exercise, such as a short walk, is a part of their routine.” A senior dog needs his daily walk still. But the distance and length of time for such a walk is not as long as when he/she was young. An owner who observes his/her dog knows how far his/her dog can walk and for how long. Drake Center says, “an important rule of thumb is to keep their exercise both regular and moderate. Keep up with daily or every other day walks and limit the duration according to the dog's level of fitness and fatigue.” Drake Center adds,” Just as in humans, exercise can also: § Help maintain a healthy body weight § Slow the progression of old-age arthritis § Stimulate cognitive capacity § Heighten motor skills and coordination faculties.” It adds: “Of course, the physical condition of your senior dog will ultimately determine exercise duration and frequency, and we recommend consulting your veterinarian about the most appropriate and effective exercise routine for your canine companion.” DC
