While the tradition of giftgiving on Christmas day traces its roots back to several centuries past, the pleasure and excitement of giving and receiving gifts is ever-present. We love to give them and we love to receive them. We Filipinos are innately generous, even the late world-renowned chef and host Anthony Bourdain attested to it. “Filipinos are, for reasons I have yet to figure out, probably the most giving of all people on the planet,” he said in an episode of Parts Unknown. We fly abroad to work just so we can make money and improve the lives of our families. We deal with homesickness and we just bite our lip and carry on, because that’s nothing compared to the good life we could give to the people we love. And come Christmas, these OFWs fill huge balikbayan boxes to the brim with imported canned goods, chocolates, toys, and shoes for their loved ones back home. We always share our blessings, especially when there’s a little extra; we share our food with our neighbors and we give pasalubong to people close to us. And yes, we go the extra mile on Christmas. You see, it’s not what’s inside the box that matters—it does, of course, but it’s only a part of it—it’s the thought and love that’s been put into the gift. Tradition aside, what makes holiday gift-giving more special is because people during this merry season are kinder and more generous. So to help those looking for presents to give to their parents, siblings, cousins, friends, and colleagues, we present, in the last of our two-part holiday supplement series, a gift guide featuring a wide range of items and where to find them. t’s not the holidays until your grandma gave you the bulkiest sweater you’ve ever seen, your friend got you a CD of a band you detest, your colleague got you another coffee mug, and your aunt gave you a green polka dotted shirt.

It’s true that while gift-giving can be a thoughtful and heartwarming experience, it can also put you in a predicament if you receive a gift from someone you don’t expect, if the gift doesn’t fit your personality, or if a gift is something that you already have. Almost everyone will receive an unpleasant gift, but that doesn’t mean you have to make the gift giver feel bad, too. so here are five easy ways to deal with awkward gift-giving moments:

Keep your cool

Whether we like it or not, we will receive a gift once and a while that we don’t like, or that we already own. At the very least, try to keep your composure while your great aunt gives you a unicorn-themed gift that she’s been giving you for the past 18 years. Maintaining eye contact, while engaged in a conversation with the gift giver, is also helpful while you’re in the middle of a gift-giving “disaster.” “It’s only awkward if you make it a big deal,” said life coach stephanie Jones in an article published on chicagotribune.com.

Practice gratitude

Acknowledgment of a gift is a matter of grace. It is gracious to understand the intent behind a gift and express happiness upon receiving it. think about why they gave you the gift and thank them for that reason. Even if the gift giver made a wrong choice, they probably had

Made of sweet rice, puto bumbong is a purple-colored dessert cooked in hollow bamboo tubes placed on a special steamer-cooker. It is served with margarine, sugar, and coconut.
