So how many is too many?

In what some have called the political upset of the year, Larry Zacarese won the Republican Primary for Sheriﬀ against party nominee New York State Republican Senator Philip Boyle. Zacarese took 56% of the vote to Boyle’s 44%. Zacarese campaigned on his law enforcement credentials and blasted Boyle for having no real connection to the law

enforcement community. Zacarese currently serves as the Second in Command for Police at the State University at Stony Brook. He is a former New York City Police Oﬃcer and paramedic. In addition to winning the Republican primary, Zacarese also won the Reform Party primary giving him a second line on the ballot Larry Zacarese

School News Freshman Student Athlete Overcomes Adversity to Shine



       

Being the only eighth grader on last year’s William  Floyd High School varsity lacrosse team may have been 

intimidating for some, but not for Jake Taylor, a 5’ 7”   attackman who has never let adversity stand in his way.  In his ﬁrst season on varsity, Taylor, 13, notched  22 points (nine goals and 13 assists) in Suffolk County   Division I Lacrosse, arguably the toughest High School

  

public school league in the country. His performance on the ﬁeld for the Colonials earned him a slot on the Long   Island Lacrosse Showcase team last June, an honor that  puts him among the top 20 players in all of Suffolk for     his age. He also plays for Legacy Lacrosse under the  leadership of his father, Coach Mike Taylor, in which he  had the amazing opportunity to compete at Mile High   Stadium, the home of the National Football League’s  Denver Broncos, in the World Series of Youth Lacrosse  for two consecutive years. Legacy won the World Series  in 2016.    These accomplishments for an eighth-grader are  something to celebrate by themselves, but when one  learns that Jake was born with club feet and hip dysplasia  and that doctors said he would never be able to play  sports, they become remarkable.      “I never even knew about my feet and hip until recently when I found my old casts and braces in my     bedroom    closet,” said Jake. “I began playing lacrosse, soccer and football at an early age and my parents didn’t think I should know. I had to wear orthotics in my   sneakers  but I didn’t think it was anything major.”   Jake details how his parents have always been

very supportive in helping him to reach for and achieve his goals. “My parents have always pushed me past my limits, so I knew I could do more and more. They knew my injuries were not going to stop me from achieving what I set out to accomplish,” he said. With his dad being a successful coach at the youth, high school and college levels for more than 25 years, and his brother, Noah, a sophomore and Colonial teammate earning “Rookie of the Year” accolades as a freshman with 17 goals and 27 assists – excelling at sports runs in the family. But it hasn’t always been easy for Jake. When he was a toddler, doctors had to break his feet and use three different sets of casts to reposition them.



 

On Thursday, September 14th, 2017 the Fuoco family held their annual golf outing to benefit Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. The event raises money to “Pay it Forward” so that those in need can enjoy the benefit of the camp. The Fuoco family runs the event with an active committee from the Rotary Club of Patchogue. So the Taylors decided to let Jake, who was unaware of his club feet and hip dysplasia, decide for himself if he wanted to play sports. Now, Jake and his brother Noah, under the leadership of Desmond Megna, their head coach at William Floyd, will try to add some additional hardware to their trophy case – a Suffolk County title. “Jake came up and started for us as an eighth grader in the toughest public school league in the nation,” said Coach Megna. “He was able to go toe-to-toe with some of the best players in the country on a weekly basis. This summer he was selected with Jezayd Hall to play for Suffolk County in the Long Island Lacrosse Showcase making him among the top 20 players in his age group. He is the cornerstone of our program who is a team first, unselfish player. Jake’s work ethic and desire to win is contagious and should help lead the program for years to come. The fact that he has been able to overcome this only adds to what is sure to be an impressive résumé.” Jake also puts the emphasis on “student” in student athlete demonstrated by his academics including being a member of the national junior honor society in middle school. As a student-athlete, he has already received special invitations to “Maverick” and “Blue Chip Showcase” camps, as well as high-profile Division I camps. As far as his future goals, he is keeping his dream colleges “under wraps,” but has set some impressive goals – graduate from a Division I college, win a Division I National Championship and become an attorney.

Recently, several third graders at Tangier Smith Elementary School had the opportunity to help unload approximately 50 boxes of school supplies generously donated by the United Way of Long Island and East End Bus Lines, William Floyd’s transportation provider, which will beneﬁt elementary students throughout the district. The “Stuff-A-Bus” program provides students with additional supplies, such as notebooks, pens, pencils, glue, highlighters, and more to help them be successful throughout the school year. The donations will be distributed to each elementary school in the district – Tangier Smith, Moriches, John S. Hobart, Nathaniel Woodhull, William Floyd Elementary and the William Floyd Learning Center.

Community Viewpoint An Open Letter To Congressman Zeldin Dear Congressman Zeldin; I’m writing this letter to you on behalf of the Suffolk County Fire District Officers Association, Suffolk County Fire Chiefs Council and Suffolk County Volunteer Fireman Association. We are asking for your support and assistance in repealing Public Law 112-96, which will require the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to begin auctioning off the T-band UHF spectrum by February 2021; using funds from the auction to construct a 700MHz National Public Safety Broadband Network (NPSBN). In many cases the current UHF / T-Band networks that have already been built out over the years have established by the fire districts using primarily local taxpayer dollars and in some cases governmental grants. While we will agree that the building out and implementation of the 700 MHz system could be a benefit for all emergency services, it should not be completed by totally destroying the current system many of the fire districts locally have built over the years. Also, as public safety officials charged with the responsibility of protecting “Life and Property” on an ongoing basis, we have serious concerns on whether the proposed network will be operational by 2021 nationally. It is also unclear to what extent, capabilities, reliability and coverage we will actually have with the 700MHz system. With the proposed changes please keep in mind that unless there is enough frequency space available in the lower portion of the UHF spectrum; those radios currently in operations and the monies spent to purchase them will be useless. Please note that to date all indications from those that have tried to move to other frequencies within the spectrum have proven that there certainly is not enough space available. Also consider that I am speaking of just those districts in Suffolk County. Now let’s compound the problem by adding our neighboring counties of Nassau, NYC and the Tristate region that also are looking to get space within the spectrum. - obviously there just isn’t going to be enough! Take a different approach and let’s say the 700MHz based system was operational and available for everyone to move to, the costs to each district would be out of control and in many cases unachievable with the budgets each fire district currently operates on and the limitations given to us locally to raise our tax base. Plus it is really not fair to our local taxpayers to now have to spend additional tax dollars to replace the current systems they have already purchased. Some quick numbers to review – there are currently 123 fire agencies that operate in Suffolk and on an average each fire department / district has (obviously according to their size) a minimum of 40 – 50 portables. The cost of

replacing those radios in the 700MHz band would be about $7000.00 per unit. Quick math using an average of 45 radios - 45 portables x $7000.00 per radio = $315,000.00 per department x 123 departments = $38,745,000.00 and that doesn’t include any of the mobile radios in our vehicles. Now let’s use a minimal number of 25 mobiles per district ($12,300,000.00) and base stations for each of the 123 departments not including sub-stations, etc. ($1,845,000.00) adding roughly to just shy of about $53 million dollars minimally. Plus now add the purchase of paging systems within the UHF spectrum for notification of the volunteers (so they know to respond), at only God knows that number. Obviously, it’s a lot more money than we all would like to expend, especially being the federal government came up with this plan to shut down the T-Band and take it its usage away from us. Again, also please keep in mind that these numbers are just in Suffolk County and do not include the other areas with this local T-Band group. Now let’s compound that nationally by including the other 12 metropolitan areas that have the T-Band spectrum in operation; let’s face it, those numbers are real hard to even think about. So, I think it’s not a far stretcher to agree those numbers will be astronomical and in many cases totally unobtainable by some of the smaller municipalities. In closing, if you were to look at the National Public Safety Telecommunications Council (NPSTC) report on the impact of the proposed T-Band give back, they report no benefit to public safety entities or the communities they serve. I would like to highlight some of their findings: 1. The total cost to mitigate agencies off T-band minimally, in just the New York region is 1.4 billion dollars; with a nationwide estimate totaling more than $5.9 billion. It also cites this figure as significantly higher than the money possibly collected from the auction of spectrum designed to fund the move. 2. The current lack of sufficient spectrum in any band to relocate existing T-band operations. 3. The moratorium on changes to existing licensees has caused significant disruption to public safety operations. 4. Insufficient time for the planning, purchasing, and installation of the proposed 700 MHz broadband system exists before the deadline. Taking all the above into consideration, the lack of available spectrum, exorbitant costs of relocation, and disruption to public safety makes Public Law 112-96 totally impractical, if not impossible to implement. We urge you to bring this matter to your fellow Congress members and consider a complete repeal of Public Law 112-96. According to Brookhaven Town Attorney Annette Eaderesto, the town cannot deny an application for a 7-Eleven or any type of business or residence if the     proposed use is in accordance with the property’s zoning. In the instance of 7-Eleven or other convenience stores, the zoning is J-2 Business, and there doesn’t appear to be a    distance restriction between stores. “Most franchises have restrictions in how close they put their operations, but     this is not so with 7-Eleven,” Brookhaven Town Planning  Board Chairman Vincent Pascale said. As a result of the publicity, state law was passed regulating the practice of companies which offer to sell you a copy of your deed. The law requires exact language to ensure that consumers are able to make informed decisions regarding the purchase of certified copies of property deeds that clearly delineates the fact that such copies are readily available for a much smaller fee from your county clerk’s office. However, these record retrieval services companies continue to seek new customers and often canvass entire neighborhoods with solicitations offering to sell homeowners a certified copy of

 

the deed to their home for a significantly higher cost then is available from our office. As a result of these mailings, a good number of people have contacted my office to question the legitimacy of these letters. Some of the most common questions can be summed up in the following statements; first there is no general sense of urgency to have a copy of your deed on hand at all times. Second, if you should ever need a certified copy of your deed, my office stands ready to provide you with a certified copy for a small fee that is usually five dollars. Since intestacy laws vary among the ďŹ fty states, it is possible that the persons who inherit the property, each state proceeding are different or inherit the property in different proportions. Your mother could avoid an ancillary estate proceeding by creating a revocable trust and titling her assets in the name of the trust. Upon her death, the trust would govern the distribution of the real and personal property to her beneďŹ ciaries and her estate would not be subject to the expense and inconvenience of probate proceedings in two states.

Annual Snapper Derby Held

        

The Mastic Beach Property Owners Association and the Mastic Beach Yacht Club recently held their annual free Snapper Derby for local children. The annual event is held every September to help promote ﬁshing and the importance of protecting our beaches and waterways. All the kids had a great time.

Councilman Neil Foley The enigmatic councilman from the 5th council district, Neil Foley, recently had an elbow to elbow fundraiser at Stella Trattoria & Bar on Montauk Highway, in Blue Point. The event was held on a rather hot summer evening, perfect for the restaurants outdoor terrace. The venue has it all, comfortable ambience and great food. Having grown up in an Italian neighborhood, I’m picky about Italian food and I can vouch for the restaurant, “best Italian food, ever. Neil Foley, a striking, tall good looking man, is an easily approachable elected ofﬁcial. Covering the Patchogue- Medford area, he has a lot on his plate, while Patchogue now has a bustling popular Main Street, a complete metamorphosis from its not so distant past, Medford has yet to reach that point. The Medford Civic has worked hard for many, many, years to improve the ambiance of the hamlet, but there is much left to be desired despite receiving some nice grants. Councilman Foley has his work cut out for him trying to fulﬁll his constituent’s expectations.



Warren Irving Udell

Warren Irving Udell, age 80, passed away peacefully Friday, September 1, 2017 at his home in Center Moriches, New York where he was a lifelong resident. Warren was born October 16, 1936 to Ellis and Lillian(Jones) Udell in Center Moriches, NY. Upon graduation from Center Moriches High School in 1955, Warren served in the United States Army until 1957. He then began a career as a lifelong truck driver for a local lumber company. Warren was a lifetime avid ﬁsherman. He also had many hobbies over the years including duck hunting, car racing, CB radios, motorcycles, gardening, and traveling. He got joy from being on the open water and the open road. Warren was survived by his former wife and life long friend, Sandra Rafuse; his daughter Faith (Hawthorne) McCathern; his son James Udell; granddaughter Alyssa (Benjamin) Russell; great-granddaughters Quinn Ava and Vivienne Nora; brother Ralph Udell and numerous nieces and nephews. Warren was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Lawrence and Clifford and his son, Thomas. A memorial service to celebrate Warren’s life will be held at VFW Hall, 437 Montauk Hwy, Center Moriches, NY on September 23, 2017 between 1:30pm - 3:30pm. PAIGE CHARLOTTE RIGOSI, ﬁve months old, of Shirley, died after a long battle with her illness on September 11, 2017. Paige was born at Stony Brook University Hospital on April 14, 2017. She fought valiantly to survive, having been born premature weighing in at only one pound. She was the beautiful baby girl of Anthony and Charna Rigosi and little sister to her big brother Stephen. She was the darling granddaughter to her paternal grandparents Glenn and Ellen Rigosi and maternal grandparents Chuck and Kathy Scarpati. Family and friends were received on Sunday at Roma Funeral Home in Shirley. A Mass was offered on Monday at St. Jude’s RC Church. A private cremation took place at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Center Moriches.

On April 14th, 2017, a tiny little baby girl was born. Having arrived into this world early, Paige Charlotte Rigosi’s family knew that the one pound angel would have to fight to stay alive. Her prognosis was not good; there were many complications. There would be endless surgeries and treatments. They held fast to their faith and prayed for a miracle. Paige, the mighty warrior, was a force to be reckoned with; she would not surrender. She was feisty and tenacious. Her mom, Charna, told me that whenever she thought she wasn’t getting enough attention, she would pull off her monitor leads so that the alarms would sound and all the nurses would come running. She would then smile; she got her attention. How could such a small human being make such a huge impact on countless people? Her smile was infectious. Her will to live was nothing short of courageous. The things we can learn from a child could fill the universe. The joy Paige brought to so many could never be measured, but for those whose hearts were touched by her strength, her love, and her will to live, her memory will live on forever. Paige was so lucky; she received more love in five months than some of us will receive in all our lives. She made a profound impression on the entire staff of the Neona-

          tal Intensive Care at Stonybrook Universi ty Hospital where she was born and where  she died. The dedicated, loving staff of this  unit fell head over heels for this miniature   warrior. Who could resist that captivating   smile? Despite all she had endured, all the   procedures, the needles, the pain,she still  brought all.  joy to  Anthony and Charna never left her side. They laughed, they cried, and they prayed; at  ,hoping for a chance a miracle. Consoled  by their own parents, the attentive grandparents werealways there for encourage   ment and support. The hopes of Stephen  on being  a big brother to the beautiful baby Paige never to be realized. So much   it all, sorrow; so much pain, yet, through  through every pain ﬁlled moment, Paige gave each person she touched the gift of  love. God brought her to this earth, even for such a shorttime, to restore our faith in    the human spirit.  When she was hurting and upset, she  would reach out to hold her parents hand.   Small, delicate and fragile, but it was the  hand of the mightiest of warriors. All sev carried    en pounds of her the strength of an  army. “I’ll loveyou forever, I’ll like you for    always, As long as I’m living, My baby   you’ll be”. This was  the little poem that Anthony Rigosi said to his baby girl every   day for the past ﬁve months.     


