Brookhaven Memorial Hospital’s Bellport Primary Care Center opened its doors in April, 2014 to address a critical need in providing quality primary care for local residents. The center and its staff also serve as a source of health education for the hospital’s community partners including civic, community and educational groups, to promote wellness and improved health outcomes. Historically the Bellport community has lacked access to quality health care services and, as a result, residents have had to rely on local emergency rooms to address medical issues or unfortunately, go without care all together. Bellport PCC has been providing these vital health services Monday through Saturday with convenient hours that enable easy access to care for the community. Appointments may be scheduled by calling (631) 2276600 and walk-ins are always welcome. The center’s staff includes Board Certified Physicians, a Nurse Practitioner, a Diabetes Wellness Educator/ Registered Dietician, and Medical Assistants. Support services, including reception, registration, and insurance verification are provided by Patient Access Associates. General medical and preventative services provided include: • Comprehensive physical exams • School Physicals • Vaccinations • Heart disease prevention • Diabetes and wellness education • Diet/exercise counseling • On-site laboratory services • Cancer screenings • Depression screenings and referral to treatment, • Pap smears • Adolescent medicine • Linkage to community resources, including Behavioral Health and Health Homes Plans are also in the works to add a Pediatrician to the staff at Bellport PCC. “We heard from the community that

the area is also in need of pediatric health care.” says Dr. Wehbeh, Brookhaven Hospital’s Vice President and Chief Quality Medical Officer. “Having a pediatrician on staff at the Bellport PCC will help us meet those needs as well.” Continued on page 7

You Have The Power To Save Lives, Sign Up To Be an Organ Donor
OP-Ed By New York State Assemblyman Fred Thiele Thousands of names are on the list, but not all will be saved. That’s the reality known by far too many people as they wait on New York’s organ transplant list. We must help raise awareness that we each have
the power to save lives and that there is a real need. Studies show that New Yorkers overwhelmingly support organ donation - 9 out of 10 people - yet only 27 percent are actually registered organ donors,
compared to more than 50 percent nationally. The shortage of organ donors is a national crisis, but it’s clear that New York particularly is in desperate need and has the ability
tomake a change. New York State ranks last out of all 50 states for organ donors, but ranks third in people waiting for organ donations. Out of the 120,000 Americans currently waiting for organ transplants,
nearly 10,000 live here in New York. Together, we can help increase the chances of survival for those in need of lifesaving organ, tissue or eye transplants by simply registering and encouraging our loved ones to do the same. Remember, one donor can save up to eight lives and improve up to 50 others. Anyone 16 years of age or older can register as an organ donor in New York State, and there are no costs to the donor or their family. Organ failure affects people of all ages and ethnicities, and it’s important to have diversity among donors to help save as many lives as possible. It’s also important to know that organs are given to people based on the severity of their illness, compatibility to the donor and their time spent waiting on the transplant list, not based on wealth or social status. It’s now easier for New Yorkers to become organ donors, thanks to Lauren’s Law, which passed in 2012 and allows people to register as a donor when applying for or renewing a New York State driver’s license or non-driver identification card. The law takes the name of a girl who received a lifesaving heart transplant at the age of 12. In 2016, a new was passed allowing 16- and 17-year-olds to become organ donors law while giving their parent or legal guardian the final say if the child unfortunately passed away before the age of 18. Living donation, such as donating a kidney to a family member, is also possible. This gift of life, usually done through directed donation, forges long-lasting bonds between donors and recipients. To a registered organ donor in New York State, you can apply become in person at your local Department of Motor Vehicles, sign up online at LiveOnNY.org or download the form at health.ny.gov/donatelife and it in. Additionally, you can sign up when you register to vote at the mail of Elections or by visiting organdonor.gov. Board Join the fight in helping more New Yorkers live longer, healthier lives by spreading the word about the importance of organ donation and how transplantation has saved lives and can save countless more. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions about this or any community issue by calling 631-537-2583 or email me at thielef@ nyassembly.gov.

Community Viewpoint Toxic Algae Blooms Dear Editor: Scientists at Stony Brook University have completed their assessment of water quality in Long Island’s estuaries in 2017 and the news is not good –the announcement was made at a press conference at Fire Island National Seashore Visitor’s Center. During the months of May through August, every major bay and estuary across Long Island was afflicted by a toxic algae blooms or oxygen starved waters or both. Heavy loads of nitrogen from sewage and fertilizers have been cited as the ultimate cause of these disturbing events. It began with paralytic shellfish poisoning events in May and ended with a harmful rust tide that continues today across the east end Long Island. In between, the longest and most intense brown tide bloom in recorded history, toxic blue-green algae in 14 lakes across the Island, seaweeds on ocean beaches, oxygen depleted waters found at more than 20 locations from Hempstead to East Hampton. The confluence of all of these events in all these places across Long Island in a single season is a clear sign of things being amiss. The brown tide bloom in 2017 began in mid-May and continued into August and through that time covered waters from Freeport to Southampton. While only a few brown tides have been this extensive and extended, none have been as intense as the 2017 event as brown tide cell densities exceeded 2.3 million cells per milliliters in Great South Bay, a level never recorded by any entity on Long Island. As little as 50,000 cells per milliliters of brown tide can be harmful to shellfish, a level sustained for more than 10 weeks this summer. Another disturbing occurrence was the widespread nature of dead zones across Long Island. Dead zones are regions of low or no oxygen and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation mandates that marine waters should never go below three milligrams of dissolved oxygen per liter to allow fish to survive. Through the summer, the majority of sites sampled did not meet these criteria. The data reveals that that many sites are not suitable habitats for sustaining fish and shellfish. Equally alarming was the large number of new water bodies with toxic blue-green algal blooms discovered in 2017. While several of the locations such as Long Island’s largest lake, Lake Ronkonkoma, have had chronic problems, some of the 15 sites with toxic bluegreen algal blooms experienced these events for the first time. In 2016, Suffolk County had more lakes with blue-green algal blooms than any other of the 64 counties in New York State, a distinction that is likely to be repeated in 2017. Blue-green algae make toxins that can be harmful to humans and animals and were linked to dog illnesses in multiple years and a
dog death in 2012. And all of these events can be traced back to rising levels of nitrogen coming from land and entering Long Island’s surface waters. The largest sources of nitrogen are household sewage and fertilizers which are washed into groundwater that seeps in bays, harbors, and estuaries. Nitrogen stimulates toxic algal blooms that can, in turn, remove oxygen from bottom waters as they decay. Our water quality is degrading before our eyes. Our bays are dying and the science clearly shows us why. Doing nothing is not an option. The problem will not fix itself. We need to rapidly move forward with advanced innovative septics, expansion of sewers, and creation of the Long Island Nitrogen Action Plan. The occurrence of these events such as brown tide, have led to the collapse of critical marine habitats such as seagrass, major fisheries on Long Island such as scallops and clams, and the coastal wetlands that help protect waterfront communities from the damaging impacts of storms. Groups such as The Nature Conservancy have been working for more than a decade to revive and restore these habitats and shellfish, but have been challenged by algal blooms such as those witnessed during the summer of 2017. Although this year’s research paints a bleak picture of the scale of Long Island’s water quality crisis, recent investments in advanced sewage treatment projects and programs mark the beginning of measurable water quality action by local, county and New York State governments. These are critical first steps, but the data tell us there is far more to be done. The quality of our local bodies of water is not only vital to the region’s important tourism industry, but is vital to the way of life that so many Long Islanders have grown accustomed to and have come to love. It is our hope that the Long Island Nitrogen Action Plan will play a critical role in reversing the trend of worsening algal blooms that has been observed in recent years. The map generated by the report shows precisely where on Long Island various algal blooms and low oxygen zones developed during the summer of 2017. Events depicted include algal blooms caused by Alexandrium causing paralytic shellfish poisoning and shellfish bed closures, rust tides caused by the algae Cochlodinium, brown tides caused by Aureococcus, toxic blue green algae blooms commonly caused by Microcystis, and seaweed blooms caused by Ulva. The map also depicts hypoxic or low oxygen zones which are dangerous to marine life in Long Island Sound, Smithtown Bay, and more than 20 other locations across Long Island. Sincerely, The Long Island Clean Water Partnership (LICWP)

Center Moriches Update National Pot Pie Day
ROTARY CLUB of Seatuck Cove
OP-ED By Kelly Platt
Each year on September 23, millions of people celebrate National Great American Pot Pie Day. A baked savory pie, with both a bottom and a flaky top crust is served often to a hungry bunch. Be it frozen store bought or home-made, it is sure to please those taste buds. The filling of a pot pie varies from many different ingredients, some of which are; beef, chicken or turkey, gravy, mixed vegetables, (potatoes, carrots, green beans and peas). And if you are a teacher or an educator, September 24th will have a positive meaning for you as it’s “National Punctuation Day”. A period, a comma, a semicolon, a question mark, etc. are examples of some of the punctuation that is used in writing to separate sentences and their elements and to clarify meaning. These, along with all the others, are commemorated on National Punctuation Day. Legendary Rocker Dee Snider of Twisted Sister will once again lead thousands of motorcycle riders in his annual ride for charity on Sunday, October 1st 2017, at the Town of Hempstead Lido Beach Park. Brookhaven Hospital Primary Care Center Celebrates 2nd Anniversary Continued from page 1
In December of 2016 the Bellport PCC was selected as a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). The designation is given only to primary care centers that meet the stringent quality standards set forth by the NCQA. A Patient Centered Medical Home focuses on the important role the patient has in their own care. Working together with their Primary Care Physician, the patient develops treatment goals that will not only improve their quality of life, but also emphasize overall wellness and prevention of diseases. The primary physician then coordinates the care with any specialists involved in the treatment, using an integrated care approach to their treatment, making sure to address any emotional or social issues that may be present in their life as well. Last week Assemblyman Dean Murry took a tour of the facility and presented BPCC and Brookhaven Hospital’s Senior Administration staff with a Legislative Resolution Certificate in commemoration of Community Health Center Week. “It was very impressive to see the impact the Bellport Primary Care facility has had on the community in just two short years.” said Assemblyman Dean Murray. “Through this incredible facility, residents in the community are finally able to receive much needed services that they had not received in the past.” “The Bellport Primary Care Center is a prime example of Brookhaven Hospital’s commitment to provide quality health care services to the entire community,” states Richard T. Margulis, President and CEO of Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center. “We will continue to make these investments with the goal of being our local community’s health care provider of choice.”

LIFE IS NOT ALWAYS FAIR
By Barbara Guarino Kruk
I recall vividly crying to my Mom one day when I was about eleven years old that life wasn’t fair because I did not win some sort of award at school. She drew me to herself and said, “During your life you will find that many things we think we want; things we try hard to get; will not be given to us. Life is not always fair but maybe what we want is not what is best for us in the end.” How does one console a grieving mother at the loss of her son? How do we make sense out of senselessness? At twenty-six years old, with the promise of youth still fresh upon his face, John Francis Almeida left this world and all those who loved him. How do a brother and sister find solace at the death of their sibling? Wasn’t it just a few years ago that they all played together with no worries; just kids. Life was so simple then. John was finding his way to recovery. He had gotten a wonderful job surrounded by family and friends. He was a proud and loving father to his baby boy Aiden. There was hope for the future and he was embracing that hope.
Some people struggle through the daily grind of life and find it hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. John was being supported by his mother Kim, his loving big brother Joseph, his sister Kailie, and his special aunt Tammy. For John Francis Almeida, a handsome, young man, life has not been so kind. He struggled for years with his issues, never being able to combat his inner problems. On September 6th, 2017, he passed from this world. We can only pray that he will find the peace he could not attain in this life. Maybe, for once, John will find the ‘fairness’ he so longed to attain.

You’ve likely heard the wise advice to “trust your gut.â€? While most of the time that advice is in reference to decisions that will play a big role in your life, Dr. John Agwunobi, M.D., M.B.A., M.P.H., Chief Health and Nutrition OfďŹ cer, Herbalife Nutrition, suggests that trusting your gut to keep you healthy is just as important. Support Your Health According to the American Nutrition Association, 70 million people in the United States experience some form of digestive issues and intestinal imbalances associated with occasional digestive issues, abdominal discomfort, bloating or diarrhea. Most people would agree that it’s important to eat a balanced diet with the right vitamins, minerals and nutrients to help maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is also important to introduce healthy, active and live bacteria into your body in order to build a healthy microbiome, which is a collection of the microorganisms that live in your gut. These microorganisms help protect you from germs, help break down food for energy, and produce vital vitamins.

How Suffolk Can Be Your Launch Pad
Articulation Agreements Can Help You Transfer With Ease By Mary M. Feder Did you know that Suffolk County Community College prepares students for transfer to four-year colleges and universities? With the assistance of Suffolk counselors, students routinely transition to a variety of baccalaureate programs on Long Island and throughout the nation. Ensure a Smooth Transition Articulation agreements are negotiated documents that clearly define what’s needed to transfer from one higher education institution to another and ensure that credit is granted for all appropriate courses and programs of study. The partnership is an agreement between a twoyear and four-year institution and outlines the specific courses and grades required, which can be transferred to the four-year college or university for the programs covered under the agreements. In short, it takes the guesswork out of the process and enables students to comfortably transfer from a community college to a four-year college or university. Some articulation agreements are known as joint admissions or dual admissions agreements. This is a type of articulation agreement whereby the student is accepted for enrollment into both institutions simultaneously. Under a joint admissions agreement, a student begins at community college and enters the partner four-year college or university with junior status
when he or she graduates. Aspire to a Four-Year Degree Community colleges are often stepping stones for students interested in a variety of careers, and research shows that community college students who go on to four-year institutions have a high graduation rate. By visiting sunysuffolk.edu/TransferOpps students can find a list of the institutions with which Suffolk has articulation agreements. Suffolk has currently entered into articulation agreements with a variety of colleges and universities, close to 40 institutions, to provide a simplified, guaranteed transfer process for students.
Two of the more recent agreements added to the site include new partnerships with Stony Brook University and St. John’s University. The articulation agreement with Stony Brook University is for the Nursing First Program. Under this articulation agreement, Stony Brook will reserve 65 spots in its Nursing Program for Suffolk RN students with GPAs of 3.0 or better, allowing after them junior status at Stony Brook graduating from Suffolk. Through a new articulation agreement with St. John’s University, Suffolk graduates with a 2.0 GPA or better can enjoy a $17,000 scholarship for certain programs of study. An articulation agreement with Farmingdale State College is available for automotive and nursing students and other agreements exist with St. Joseph’s College, LIU, Vaughn College, and NYU just to name a few! – Continuous Pathways at SUNY Within the SUNY system, transferring has also become more seamless because Suffolk credits are accepted at all SUNY institutions. After consulting the a site, a student should meet with transfer counselor at his/her home campus and should confer with the transfer counselor of the four-year college or university and keep their advisor informed transfer plans. As of transfer approaches, students should set a time to meet with an advisor at the targetinstitution.

5 Ways The College Textbook Industry Gets You To Pay More For Textbooks
By Chris Manns cost was haunting. The dorm bill was Thetuition daunting. The laptop your favorite college freshman just had to have cost more than your first car. Now all she has left to do is hit the college bookstore with her list of required textbooks. Don’t be surprised if she comes out crying. A recent study by the United States Government Accountability office showed that the average prices for textbooks have risen 82 percent in just 10 years. Many expected that internet access would help bring costs down, but the college textbook industry appears be keeping students from saving money to by using such tactics as college specific books, book bundling and eTextbooks, all of which raise prices. Luckily there is something you can do about it. You just need to do a little homework before classes start. many There are ways you can save when buying
textbooks that the college textbook industry doesn’t want you to know about of the price comparison websitesCheapestTextbooks.com and TextbookRentals. com. Both free services help students locate the cheapest prices for millions of books. Here’s his list of the ways the college textbook industry gets you to pay more, and some tips for paying less: • College Specific Books: Colleges have started asking students to buy college specific books. They take a commonly used textbook and have it printed with the college name and course number on the cover. This gives the book a new ISBN (International Standard Book Number) that is typically only available at the college it was made for. The workaround: Ask the professor if it’s OK to use the book’s common version. “The common version will be available online and, in almost all cases, be much cheaper and apart from the cover, it’ll be the exact same.
When you rent or buy it online, you’ll be able to rent or buy it used from anybody,” Manns says. • Book Bundling: Students are sometimes required to buy a “book bundle” with extra class materials that add to the cost. These bundles often include items the professors aren’t even using. The workaround: Email the professor or wait until the class starts and ask if the professor will be using the supplemental material. If the answer is no, then buy just the textbook online. • New Editions: This problem has been around a long time. Publishers release new versions of books every few years, even though little changes. Usually, buying an older edition gives you the information you need. Older editions often cost less than $25. • eTextbooks: eTextbooks are usually more expensive than buying a book used or renting it, and they typically expire after six months or a year.

Estate Planning for Single Seniors
Question:
I have
been living with my partner for the last 25
years. While I want to provide for him in my estate plan, I want to be sure when we are both deceased, my to my children from my first marriage. Can assets pass this be accomplished? Answer: For the single individual who is living with another
person but is unmarried, planning can be done to specifically provide for that partner, if so desired. It is important to recognize that partners are not given rights to property the way spouses are. Even if a person has resided with another for decades, without proper estate planning, that partner will not be entitled to assets of
the decedent.
Having a will which designates a partner as the
beneficiary of the estate can ensure that property passes to the partner; however in order for the will to be carried out, it must go through Probate. In New York, the Probate process includes notifying and obtaining
the consent of the decedent’s heirs. For instance, if a single individual with children dies, the children are the parties entitled to notice of the proceeding. If the children do not consent, they have the opportunity to present objections to the will which leaves assets to the partner. If their objections are successful, the Will is invalidated and the law of intestacy prevails which assumes the deceased person would have wanted their estate to be distributed to their children, and not their partner. Moreover, if your will gives assets to your partner outright, those assets become part of your partner’s estate and will not necessarily be distributed to your children unless he includes your children in his estate plan. The best technique for implementing a plan which avoids objections and ensures the remaining assets are preserved for your children is to use a trust. Trusts can hold assets for the lifetime of the partner, but distribute
the assets to your children after the partner’s death. Trusts also avoid probate so that potential contests are avoided. Depending on the type of trust utilized, trusts can also protect assets in case either partner needs Medicaid to pay for their long term care, whether it be care in a nursing home facility or aid services at home. In addition to the foregoing considerations regarding leaving assets at death, it is equally important to remember that partners do not have rights to make decisions during your life without proper planning. An estate plan is not complete without comprehensive advance directives which allow loved ones to make healthcare and financial decisions for you if you are incapacitated.
