by Barbara LaMonica Over 150 residents and elected officials at virtually every level of government turned out for a public hearing last week to testify about the need for additional at grade railroad crossings in the Tri Hamlet peninsula. The hearing was conducted following a 30-year saga of efforts to get the LIRR to build another crossing to lessen volumes of traffic at various intersections, and in anticipation of an emergency where residents would have to evacuate the peninsula when time is of the essence. From a logistical standpoint, Brookhaven Town Planning Commissioner Tullio Bertoli explained that the Tri Hamlet Community is a seven-mile long peninsula with one way in and one way out. Brookhaven Town Sixth District Councilman Dan Panico directed the hearing where listeners heard results of a comprehensive ‘Long Island Railroad At-Grade Crossing Traffic Impact Study’ by Nelson & Pope Engineers and Land Surveyors which was commissioned by the town as part of a legal process the town is following under

Section 90 of the New York State Railroad Law. According to Brookhaven Town Senior Assistant Town Attorney Kenneth Lauri, the legal process includes the town giving notice to the LIRR about the public hearing. Nelson & Pope’s ﬁndings, together with testimony from the hearing are being submitted to the New York State Department of Transportation prior to the case going before a law judge. According to statistics cited by Nelson & Pope, the Patchogue/North Patchogue/Patchogue Village communities to the west of the Tri Hamlet Community have a population of 45,420 and 12 at-grade railroad crossings. The Center Moriches community to the east of the Tri Hamlet Community has a population of 8,043 with four at-grade railroad crossings. The Tri Hamlet peninsula has a population of 56,649 with three railroad crossings. Upon calculation of those statistics, the Tri Hamlet has an appreciably larger population with signiﬁcantly fewer atgrade crossings. Add to the mix that the Tri Hamlet Continued on Page 3

Public Hearing for More LIRR Crossings in Tri Hamlet Community Continued from Page 1 Community is a peninsula surrounded by the Forge River on its east coast, the Carmans River on the west coast and Great South Bay on its southern tip, and elected officials and emergency personnel all agree it is a roadmap for disaster in an emergency where residents would have to be moved off the peninsula. Accident history statistics were also disclosed showing 91% of accidents occurred north or south of the railroad tracks and most at roadway segments leading to the crossings, and zero occurred at the railroad crossings. The report also charted pros and cons of sites that are under consideration for at-grade crossings. The traffic study shows Madison Street is town-owned and is wider and has a higher traffic volume than Hawthorne, all “pros” for implementing an at-grade crossing. On the down side, there is no existing traffic signal at Montauk Highway and a new signal would be required which would require approval of the Suffolk County Department of Public Works. The upside for Hawthorne is that it has direct access to Montauk and Sunrise highways and direct access would be provided by Titmus Drive. The cons for Hawthorne are that is narrower, has low traffic volumes and a new atgrade crossing would require property acquisition. In addition to statistics and facts, Nelson & Pope’s overhead unveiled optics that showed a series of rear end accidents and various other vehicular accident scenarios which resulted in traffic jams. In conclusion, Nelson & Pope traffic study found that “traffic will improve from existing conditions with a new at-grade crossing.” Local residents, merchants and electeds alike testified during the hearing and all, with one exception being the Long Island Railroad, were in agreement that one or two at-grade railroad crossings are a necessity for safety and quality of life factors.

           

Congressman Lee Zeldin, who is an alumnus of William  Floyd High School acknowledged this is a decades-old  problem and conveyed staunch support for an additional  at-grade railroad crossing. He explained federal funding  is “block granted to states and Albany figures out how the  money is spent,” adding that he would “love to see this   money come through from the state.” Zeldin, who serves on   Congress’ Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure,     asserts he has worked tirelessly on rail related issues including the push to improve safety at highway rail grade   crossings. Congress’ Fixing America’s Transportation Act  (FAST Act), was the first fully funded long term highway     and transit bill to become law in nearly a decade, receiving  bipartisan support. Zeldin served on the committee which  wrote the bill and secured its passage into law. The FAST   Act continued federal funding for safety improvements  at railway-highway crossings with specific funding for  the Railway-Highway Crossings Program to the tune of  $245 million per year over the life of the bill. Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) announced today that the Eastport Fire District has been awarded a $313,334 grant for communication equipment through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. Funding from this regional grant will be used at the Eastport, East Moriches and Westhampton Beach Fire Districts. Congressman Zeldin said, “I am proud to announce that this essential funding has been awarded to the Eastport, East Moriches and Westhampton Beach Fire Districts to update important communication equipment, such as pagers, phones and radios, which are relied upon by our local first responders. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore and Brookhaven Town Councilman Kevin LaValle recently co-sponsored the third Run the Farm 4 Mile Challenge marathon. This event took place at Bethel Hobbs Farm in Centereach, a local volunteer community farm that provides fresh, wholesome produce to those in need. All funds raised will be donated to Bethel Hobbs Farm. Over 200 participants ran the four mile course, which consisted of both flat and hilly terrain surrounding the Centereach farm. The run was followed by an award ceremony, musical entertainment, and raffle drawings on the grounds. “The Third Annual Run the Farm was a great community event. Josh, It’s Time to Take a Leave of Absence

   With a little over eight weeks until Election Day, the number of  press  releases and photos that have been coming into The South Shore Press could fill the whole paper.  Those serving in office have the power of the incumbency. As an  elected official you get invited to community events. You speak at     meetings and hand out awards. You do your job and the media covers 

your activities.

   However, that is not the case in this year’s race for the Suffolk    County Legislature’s 3rd District because there is no incumbent.

  can’t run for re-election, so there’s an open seat.  

The Democrats have chosen longtime Browning aide Josh Slaughter

Some have said this will be the hottest election on this year’s  

calendar and we agree. What’s odd about the release is  Mr. Slaughter is the only official in the photo. No other elected officials   were in the photo. Community Viewpoint LIRR Grade Crossings

I attended the public hearing on August 23 at the William Floyd High School regarding the need for another grade crossing to alleviate the traffic problems on the Mastic Peninsula. The hearing was called for by Councilman Dan Panico. A study was done by Nelson and Pope Engineers on how to address the problem. Mentioned in the study were the present crossings: Mastic Rd., Wm. Floyd Parkway, and Smith Rd. The study addressed the crossings at Mastic Rd. and Wm. Floyd Parkway and that a new crossing should be constructed at either Hawthorne St. or Madison St . At no time during the discussion by the engineers or others on the dais was the crossing at Smith Rd. ever mentioned again. Back in 1978, a debate involving the same issue was being discussed. I submitted a proposal regarding Smith Road, the other crossing mentioned in this study but not discussed. Smith Road’s present paved portion runs from Montauk Hwy. to Ranch Dr. in the western portion of Shirley. The right of way for Smith Rd. runs further south to Tallwood Dr. in South Shirley. A few blocks north of that it intersects with Havenwood Drive. Havenwood Dr. crosses Wm. Floyd Pky. and connects with Neighborhood Road. There is a traffic light at Wm. Floyd. I proposed at that time to pave the remainder of Smith Rd. to Havenwood Dr. This would provide an additional route out of Mastic Beach and South Shirley. Vehicular traffic which would eventually travel west on Montauk Hwy. or Sunrise Hwy. could use this route. This could take a large volume of traffic away from Wm. Floyd Pkwy., Mastic Rd., and the densely populated center of the peninsula. Smith Rd. has no residences on its west side and there is a traffic light already in place at Montauk Hwy. The portion of Montauk Hwy. where Smith Rd. meets it is much less traveled than the portion between Wm. Floyd and Mastic Rd. Several days after I submitted this proposal in 1978, I received a letter back from the Director of Traffic Safety for the Town of Brookhaven, Vincent G. Donnelly, P.E. He stated that my recommendations were well taken and valid and would be evaluated. So..... from 1978 until now, what has been done on this? NOTHING!!! Why?? Could someone please tell me why this common sense proposal can’t happen and thus help with this critical situation? Sincerely, Richard Oldham, Mastic

It didn’t take long before feeling disgust for our new village administration, and one trustee in particular, for yet again showing his true colors to the people. Recently, the village board of trustees voted 5-0 to hire none other than the previous mayor, MAURA SPERY to work for the village during its final months as a “Grant Coordinator”. Yes, that’s right, the same Maura Spery who overspent the village into a deficit, The same Maura Spery who tried raising taxes 125%, The same Maura Spery who hired a convicted 4x felon and hid it from her own board. The same Maura who refused to do criminal background checks and supported her decision to hire this felon to run code enforcement even after he was charged with lying on his job application (most likely at her direction). The same Maura Spery who consistently lied to the people that put her in office, targeted individuals that spoke out against her, and got the village sued on multiple occasions because of her actions. First, there is no time to apply and receive almost any new grants for the remaining few months as a village, so this paycheck is nothing more than a payoff. For Trustee Joseph Johnson to vote yes for this is absolutely appalling. Mr. Johnson criticized Maura Spery’s every financial mistake for years, campaigned and spoke out against her failure in leadership and constant misappropriation of public funds, cronyism, and deceitful actions. Now that Maura is his friend, he apparently has no problem handing her a $5,000 payoff. Joseph Johnson hiring Maura Spery is the equivalent of President Trump hiring Hillary Clinton to run his email servers. Mr. Johnson has clearly shown the people he stands for nothing and has no spine whatsoever. If I were him I would save myself the embarrassment and simply step down since he is clearly unfit to hold a strong opinion, and without that he couldn’t possibly hold a seat in office even after turning his back on the people who supported and voted for him. Mr. Johnson, you are a disgrace and a perfect example of what an elected official should NOT be. You stand for nothing and should be ashamed of yourself for raising taxes and giving your friend this payoff on the taxpayers dime. Sincerely, Chris Anderson, former Mastic Beach Trustee

The threat from Hurricane Harvey is far from over, as extremely dangerous ﬂooding continues in Texas and parts of Louisiana. Getting help in some areas will be challenging in the days ahead due to devastating ﬂoodwaters and closed roads. This is a heartbreaking and challenging situation for those in the storm’s path. The American Red Cross, thanks to the generosity of our supporters and volunteers, is working around the clock to provide safe shelter and comfort for the hundreds of thousands of people impacted by this disaster. This is a time for communities to come together and support one another. Thanks to the generosity of 7-Eleven, Inc., all donations made in the next 24 hours to Hurricane Harvey will be matched, dollar-for-dollar, up to $150,000. This is a chance for your

impact to go twice as far. Please give generously to those who need it most. Here is an update on our response, as well as ways to get help: More than 1,800 people took refuge from the deadly storm Saturday night in 34 Red Cross and community shelters in Texas, and one shelter in Louisiana. We have enough shelter supplies in Texas to support 28,000 people and supplies for an additional 22,000 people are being sent in now. In addition, tractor trailer loads of ready-to-eat meals, comfort kits, kitchen supplies and cleaning supplies are on the ground in Texas. Nearly half of our emergency response fleet – more than 150 vehicles – have been mobilized. The Red Cross has prepositioned blood products in Houston ahead of the storm to help ensure we can maintain an adequate blood supply. Harvey will continue to produce an additional several feet of rain over the next several days, and millions of people are facing flash flood warnings, including the

Reform Party Chairman Endorses Perini

“Superior” Ratings This past spring, student musicians from William Floyd Middle School and William Paca Middle School took part in the Long Island Music Festival held at the Brentwood campus of Suffolk County Community College. Created and administered by music educators, the festival is designed to bring students and adjudicators together in a positive learning environment. Student groups had the opportunity to perform in front of adjudicators and also participate in clinics after the performance. All William Floyd performing groups from both middle schools received “Superior” ratings!

    New Director Appointed    The Longwood Board of Education has  unanimously approved the appointment of Stephanie  Columbia as the Director of Mental Health Services  and Student Attendance, effective July 6, 2017.  Ms. Columbia began her career at Longwood in  2001, where she     served as a school social worker at Ridge Elementary School. In that capacity, she   initiated parent support and parenting skills programs,    coordinated community outreach, and implemented     for students. social skills training    In 2014, she co-authored the School Climate    Transformation Grant from the New York State  Department of Education and Safe and Healthy  Stephanie Columbia Schools. Longwood     was awarded the $1.7 million grant to implement Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies (PBIS) for students K-12 and The  Leader in Me for students K-4.       To facilitate the implementation of the grant, Ms. Columbia provided Districtwide  professional development to staff, initiated school building internal PBIS teams, served as

district level coordinator and implemented the building level PBIS coaching program.    In  2015 and 2016, she presented at both the Northeast and National PBIS Conference     on the positive impact of the grant’s implementation. In October 2017, she will present at  the New York State Association for Behavior Analysis Conference.   Ms. Columbia      earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Purchase College in Psychology, a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Fordham University, and received her BCBA  in Applied Behavior Analysis from Florida Institute of Technology. She earned her

administrative certiﬁcations from Dowling College and is currently pursuing her doctoral 

William Floyd Bicycle Academy The William Floyd Bicycle Academy, under the direction of occupational therapist Ed Diaz, has grown exponentially in just four short summers from being managed by a handful of volunteers with a small number of bicycles, to having a team of volunteers consisting of teachers, teaching assistants, high school students, community members, college students and more. In addition to assisting students with special needs and general education students, this William Floyd occupational therapist Ed Diaz helps a student learn year the program welcomed to ride a bike at the William Floyd Bicycle Academy. students who are medically frail or orthopedically impaired. The program is made possible due to the generosity of the William Floyd community which continues to donate bicycles and other equipment for the program.

   By Barbara Guarino Kruk  Think of the most precious personal item you own; now  

think about parting with that item. The thought of throwing out your favorite childhood teddy bear, even though he’s all ratty and falling apart, is pretty unsettling. Now, think   about parting with all the cherished items collected over a  lifetime from someone you love. It’s not a very pleasant     thought.  As many of you know, my dear mom, Josephine  Guarino, passed away on May 3rd, 2017. As an only child,   I have been tasked with getting all her affairs in order, to  finalize her estate. Part of that daunting process includes  selling her home and all its contents. My dear mother was  an elegant, organized hoarder. You are asking yourself,    “what does that mean?”. Simply, my mother loved beautiful  things, and bought things even if she didn’t need them. If  she purchased   a blouse in blue and liked how it fit, she then bought it in every color it came in. If she had one pair  leather gloves, she had a hundred, in all lengths and all    of   colors. In other words, her home, while meticulously neat, a warehouse filled with multiplies of everything.     was Overwhelmed by the task of disposing of all her     personal effects, I engaged the services of a company who    in estate sales. The woman, Jane, who owns and specializes  the company was lovely and very sympathetic. operates

We discussed at length which items would be offered for sale, which would be retained by me to be given to charity and which were to be thrown out. It all seemed so simple. The day of the sale I went to my mom’s home. The second I walked through the doora feeling of depression washed over me. There, for all the world to see, laid upon tables and counters, was the contents of every cabinet, drawer and closet. I was horriﬁed. My dear mother, who, even at ninety, had always prided herself on the fact that her home was spotless, was probably doing ﬂips. I stood there, in the midst of all this ‘stuff’, and cried. I wept for the loss of my mother. I wept for the exposure of

her privacy. I felt like I had betrayed my mother; invaded her privacy and left her vulnerable to the public. Jane walked in and said nothing but came over and held me in her arms until I regained a modicum of composure. She sat me down on a chair that had been at my mother’s table for nearly sixty years and softly spoke to me. “I know this is hard; I’ve been through it myself. I knew from the moment I ﬁrst walked into this home that someone who loved beautiful things lived here. The care with which she had maintained her home and personal belongings was a testament to how much she enjoyed life. Now, as painful as this may be, its time to share these precious things with others who will appreciate them.” I looked into her warm eyes, and knew she was right. I had taken those things that were signiﬁcant to me; things from my childhood and realized that there was only so much I wanted or needed to add to the growing treasure trove of my own things. I pulled myself together just in time to receive the onslaught of collectors who had come to partake in this event. I stayed long enough to hear some of those who came telling Jane how beautiful the pieces were, or how they had been looking for a particular item for years and in what pristine condition everything was in. At that moment, I felt so proud of my Mom. These people “got it”, they understood her need to surround herself with beautiful things and the love and care she took with each piece. I hope that when we meet again Mom will be happy with what I did. The one lesson I have learned, is that holding on to things that make you happy is not hoarding. Of course, my children have warned me about just this kind of behavior, I suppose its genetic.



Hundreds of area residents attended the annual Blue Claw Crab Festivial that was held last Sunday at Marina One in Mastic Beach. The event which is sponsored by the Mastic Beach Property Owners Association featured music, entertainment, vendors and great food. The event helps the Property Owners raise funds to support community based programs and projects.

Village Hires Former Mayor as $1,000 a Month Consultant

  In a surprising move the Village of  Mastic Beach has hired Sperow  Management Inc., a company owned  

by former Mastic Beach Mayor Maura Spery as a $1,000.00 a month public relations consultant and grant writer.   Spery, who opposed the creation of  the village served as a Village Trustee     and one term as Mayor. Spery’s tenure as mayor was plagued  by serious budget errors and massive   proposed tax increases.  Spery said as the time that mistakes  were  made by staff and that she accepted full responsibility as the Mayor but that    budget deﬁcits were created by false  budgeting of passed administrations.  year a public referendum was Last  held and residents voted to dissolve the      village and turn all of its functions back  over to the Town of Brookhaven. This will allow for our staff to work, whenever possible, to close out any and all applications and generate the permits so that they transfer to the Town. Mastic Beach Village property taxes were due and payable as of June 1, 2017. Any unpaid village taxes will go into a special account and will continue to accrue penalties and interest and will remain as a lien against the property until they are satisﬁed. The board looks forward to continuing to work to make a smooth transition back to the Town of Brookhaven. As we get closer to dissolution we will update our progress.

The two other passengers in the vehicle, both male, were transported by East Moriches Ambulance to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries. The Town of Brookhaven Building Inspector was called to the scene to assess damage to the building. The investigation is continuing.
