By Barbara LaMonica The South Country School Board has scheduled a special public meeting for August 16th at Bellport Middle School, where final test results of all air and soil testing particulates relating to the Brookhaven Town Landfill and concerns that may be affecting the health of an estimated 700 students, as well as staff attending the Frank P. Long Intermediate School will be unveiled. The public portion of the meeting is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. The school district has been facing mounting pressure from parents and school personnel over decades, and more recently during the last three years, to close the school after concerns over whether reports of increasing illnesses and deaths may be allegedly linked to potential carcinogens and odors emanating from the 300 foot high mound, 192 acre Brookhaven Town Landfill. Intermediate School is located about 1.7 miles southeast of the landﬁll, two miles southeast of the Long Island Compost Great Gardens Compost and about one half mile north of one asphalt plant and approximately one half mile west of another. South Country School Board President Cheryl Felice said in an interview this week that the Board of Education is “actively considering all options to protect students, teachers, staﬀ and administrators, because their health and safety are our number one priority.” Felice said once the Board evaluates environmental testing and hears recommendations of the experts at the August 16th meeting, the Board will subsequently base its decision on what is best for the health and safety of those attending the school as well as consider short and long term goals. The Do Not Resuscitate Order

  



Question:

My mother is in a nursing home and she has a “non-hospital DNR.” What is that and how does it differ from a traditional DNR?

Answer:

The “Do Not Resuscitate” order, or “DNR” came about from a task force commenced by Governor Mario Cuomo in 1985 wherein experts were tasked with reconciling outstanding issues with legally withholding life sustaining treatment. The result was the traditional DNR order which applied to patients in an institution such as hospitals, nursing homes and mental health facilities. Unlike a Living Will which is a general statement of wishes that a person would not want life sustaining treatment administered if there were no hope they would make a meaningful recovery, DNRs are directives which only apply to incidents of cardiac respiratory arrest and prevent the use of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The DNR order must be signed by a physician on the Department of Health form and recorded in the patient’s medical record. It can be signed by the patient herself, or if she lacks mental capacity, the DNR can be signed by a family member or health care agent. The DNR order must be reviewed periodically by a physician. This means they should be revisited every seven days for hospital patients and at each visit for outpatients, but at least every 60 days for nursing home residents. Due to the fact that the traditional

DNR can only be used in an institutional setting, in 1991 the legislature expanded the Public Health Law to include a nonhospital DNR order. This would cover the prevention of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in emergency situations outside of a facility. The non-hospital DNR would be utilized for emergency services personnel, including ﬁrst responders and emergency medical technicians, when the patient is at home or in another community setting. While EMS workers are legally obligated to honor the non-hospital DNR, they may still administer CPR if 1.) they reasonably believe in good faith that the consent is not valid and 2.) if family members or others at the scene object to the order and physical confrontation appears likely. Doctors in the emergency room of a hospital have more discretion in that they can refuse to honor a non-hospital DNR for the same reasons as EMS personnel and if other signiﬁcant and exceptional medical circumstances warrant doing so. Non-hospital DNR orders must be treated as any other DNR order if the patient is admitted to a hospital. It will remain effective in the hospital until the order is revoked or a doctor cancels the order. Like a traditional DNR, a nonhospital DNR must be in writing on the standard form from the Department of Health. The form must be reviewed by a physician at each visit, or at least every 90 days, but review need not occur more than once every seven days.

How is Getting Publicly Available Voter Info an Invasion of Privacy?

 

a full front assault on our Constitution and our privacy, but also an attempt to suppress voter participation. What nonsense! The more I see such bizarre analyses,   the more prescient I believe that George Orwell was in  warning us how truth can be turned on its head by just  a lie long enough.    repeating How in the world can requesting of information that  is already publicly available be deemed as an invasion   The order itself requests information only of privacy?  “if publicly available under the laws of your state.”  So why does the left, in conjunction with the media,  continue to push the inaccurate talking points that the request is a disguised attempt to suppress voters?     First, they wish to twist the issue into a game of  identity politics. By misrepresenting the issue as an   attempt by Republicans to oppress minority voters, they  could raise money from, and energize, their base.     Secondly, they believe that if fraud were to occur,  it would likely ensure to the benefit of the Democrats themselves. It’s one of the reasons they have looked     the other    way as federal authorities refused to enforce laws against illegal immigration. How do we get that information? By simply calling the Board of Elections. The board cannot refuse the request. The President’s panel is seeking the information to determine if there is a significant amount of voter fraud in our system. The issue was muddied by the President himself who made a foolish and unsubstantiated claim that millions of illegal aliens voted in 2016. The media and the left jumped on the assertion, first debunking the

claim itself, but also claiming that voter fraud is so insignificant as to not be worthy of an investigation. Regarding the former, they are correct;, but on the latter, they are dangerously wrong. There doesn’t have to be millions of voter fraud cases to establish fraud as a major concern. Tell the candidate who lost by five votes that the ten contested votes casted in that race were insignificant. The fact is that there are a large number of razor thin victories in US elections in any year. In the town of Brookhaven, New York (which has a population of 475,000), Councilwoman Connie Kepert lost her election by four votes. The congressman from that area was elected only after a recount and the absentee ballots were opened. President George W. Bush became the 43rd president only after recounts found he had won the state of Florida by a mere 500 votes. In 2010, comedian Al Franken became the United States senator from Minnesota by a slim 312 vote margin. There were at least 340 contested votes in that race. The fact is, voter fraud does occur. It’s not widespread, but it’s enough that it can change the nature of elections - and that alone is a reason for scrutiny. Today, you can register to vote in many states without showing any proof of citizenship. Aliens, both legal and illegal, have been known to vote on numerous occasions, as have some felons. Some had nefarious intent; others didn’t know what they were doing was wrong. Either way, their votes shouldn’t be counted. So why would anyone be opposed to ensuring that only those eligible to vote, actually cast a vote? The answer lies in the incendiary nature of partisan, identity politics. Community Viewpoint Don’t Let Suffolk Stear Clear of Progress

Suffolk, leaving hopeful residents and businesses in a    dust  cloud ofconfusion and dissatisfaction.     The localeconomic beneﬁts of ride-sharing appear  profound.   According     to the Suffolk County Executive’s Ofﬁce, 

legal ride-sharing “will help produce $121 million in additional spending by passengers in our local economy, $57 million in earnings in wages and tips, and $34 million in estimated value of time saved”. Ride-sharing also makes our roads safer. A Temple University study showed that cities with Uber had vehicular homicide rates drop between 3.6 and 5.6% once they adopted the ride-sharing service - likely due to a decrease in drunk driving. This evidence reﬂects common sense: If you know you can use a reliable ride-sharing service like Uber or Lyft to get home safely at an affordable price, you’re less likely to make a dangerous choice that could ultimately cost someone their life. County Legislators should listen to the 85 percent of Long Islanders who support ride-sharing, and stop

   Obituaries  LENA D’ARCO, 94, of Shirley, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family at A Rainbow Day     Brookhaven Memorial Hospital on July 29th, 2017. One can call themselves blessed for having shared in the life of someone who brought joy and comfort to many people. That special person, who brightens your  day, hugs you when you are down, and lifts your spirits; someone who asks for  nothing; and gives everything, even to strangers.  Thomas J. Gillen was that special person. He was a man who genuinely loved  people. He could command a crowd, or whisper to asingle person. Tom was born  in Brooklyn in 1946 to Joseph and Ann Gillen, he was one of six siblings. In 1970   he met and married his beautiful wife Kathleen. They have been happily married     their   for nearly forty-seven years. Together they have loved and raised three sons, Thomas Jr., Peter and Matthew, becoming the proud and loving grandparents to  Thomas William, Brieanna, Timothy, Sienna, Aidan, Sadie and Reese.   As Deacon, Tom administered to the good and faithful  members of his beloved  St. Jude’s parish since 1981. He was chosen to begin his studies into the very ﬁrst  he class of the Diaconate in 1976, but, because he was too young, had to wait until  he attained the age of thirty-ﬁve to be ordained. Tom brought the teachings and blessing of his faith to countless numbers of people throughout these many years.  He was a ‘happy’ person, always smiling and sharing his contagious laugh. With the steady progression of his illness, his beloved Kathy became his primary caregiver. They shared a bond both in marriage and in faith. It was actually Kathy who brought him to St. Jude’s parish and he immediately knew he was home.  Recently Tom wrote a letter to those he has served faithfully in the name of  “I Christ for all these years. This is an excerpt from that letter. am honored and blessed to be a humble minister to the extraordinary people of St. Jude. You have  invited me to share in some of your most intimate moments, witnessing your vows, being at your side while your loved ones were dying,  bring Eucharist to you when  you were sick, leading wake and graveside services for your beloved deceased. I have celebrated wedding anniversaries, birthdays, graduations. have cried with    I you over life’s disappointments, loss of jobs, arrests, failures and deaths of your children, husbands, wives, and family members.” Tom was a great storyteller. He could change from an Irish brogue to a truly  convincing Italian accent in seconds. He could make  you laugh you cried. until   He was a big man with an even bigger heart. He gave you his shoulder to cry on and his hand to hold you steady.   We would always tease him that in spite of his size he could climb a telephone pole better and faster than anyone I had ever seen. He was agile and strong in both  his mind and his body. When Tom was diagnosed with diabetes and had to start Kidney Dialysis in 2007 it was a sad day for all of us, but he never let his illness stop him from his mission. In 2009 he received a kidney transplant from a friend,    Patricia Murphy Firman. I have lost two dear friends, Ken Geoghan and now Tom Gillen, in the last    the month. Not only do I grieve the loss of two wonderful men, but I grieve for members of my parish family and my community. Their leave deep   passing    will  a       void in  all our hearts.   May you have a Rainbow Day…we love you Tom!                                                                                                 

was a seamstress by trade. Lena was a twin to Lina Scotti, her best friend. She enjoyed gambling, playing poker, card games and going to the casino. She was a social butterfly, enjoyed Italian music, cooking and sewing. She is survived by her twin sister Lina Scotti, her nephew Neil Scotti and niece Shirley Ann Javitz, Silvio Nucci, and Albie Nucci,. She was the cherished great aunt to many nieces and nephews. She was a member of the St. George Seniors. Family and friends were received at Roma Funeral Home in Shirley. A Mass was offered on Monday at 10:00 am at St. Jude’s RC Church. A private cremation followed at Mt. Pleasant in Center Moriches.  ********************************************************************** DEACON THOMAS J. GILLEN,  70, of Shirley, was called home to his Heavenly Father, on July 28th, 2017, while being treated at Stony Brook University Hospital. Tom, born in Brooklyn, was one of six children born to Joseph and Ann Gillen. He retired from NY Telephone/Verizon in 2001. He was ordained a Deacon of the Diocese of Rockville Centre in 1976, graduating from the very first class of the Diaconate. He was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus with the Queen of All Hearts Council #4126 for over fifty years; a member of the St. Jude’s Men’s Group, Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and the Third Order of St. Dominic. He loved to cook and was a great fan of the famous chefs Julia Child and Jacque Pepin. He enjoyed fishing, sports and was a fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers Baseball. He loved all types of music and played the guitar. He is survived by his beloved wife Kathleen to whom he had been married for the past forty-seven years. He was the loving father to Thomas Jr. (Stacie), Peter, and Matthew. He was the cherished grandfather to Thomas William, Brieanna, Timothy, Sienna, Aidan, Sadie and Reese. He was the devoted brother to Michael, JoAnn Zech, Patricia Johnson, Margaret Muller and Margaret Dunphy. Family and friends were received at Roma Funeral Home on Monday and Tuesday. A Mass of Transferral was offered at St. Jude’s RC Church on Tuesday evening. The funeral mass was held on Wednesday at 10:00 am also at St. Jude’s. Interment took place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Coram.





 

From humble beginnings in a church basement to our modern state-of-the-art studio, through its 42 year history, Stage Door School of Dance has become the premier dance studio on Long Island. SDSD was established by Diane and James Giattino as a family focused studio in 1976, built on a passion for theater and dance. Today, their daughter Mary Giattino-Styles draws from that same passion to provide a dance education that is truly unique. Our studio focuses on the individuality of our dancers; fully devoted to providing a supportive atmosphere for all dancers whether they are on our competition team or our recreational program. How to Choose The Right Ballroom Dance Shoes

HEEL HEIGHTS The heel height for Latin and ballroom dance shoes ranges from 1.5” to 3”. For beginning dancers, you should choose a heel height that gives you the most comfort. If you are not accustomed to wearing heels, you may want to start with shoes that have a lower heel to start with. Also, there are different shapes of heel, such as slim and flared. A flared heel is a popular choice as it gives you more stability. For men’s dance shoes, a 1” heel is designed for ballroom dance styles while a 1.5” Cuban heel is designed

for Latin dance styles. Unless you are participating in dance competitions, a 1” heel is generally sufficient for both ballroom and Latin dancing. 4. SUEDE SOLE SHOES It is recommended to have a suede sole for your dance shoes. The suede sole gives you the right amount of slip and traction so that you can feel more balanced and have more control when turning and moving around the dance floor. Every once in a while, you need to brush the suede sole with a wire dance shoe brush to maintain its roughness. 5. BUYING DANCE SHOES ONLINE VS. IN STORE Whether you order shoes online or purchase them in a store, first go to a dance supply store to try on some shoes. Since sizing can vary from brand to brand, it is best to try and compare various brands, sizes and models to ensure you find the right fit.
