“The Catbird Seat - Art Gallery and Vintage Shoppe” will have its ribbon cutting on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 10:00 am at 18 Main Street, Sayville, N.Y. 11782. The celebration will continue all day until 9:00 pm. There will also be live music and refreshments. It is just in time for Sayville’s Summerfest, which starts the next day. In the past Sayville has received the designation as the “Friendliest Town in America” - it is a destination. This shop is filling the vacant, empty store in the middle of Sayville Long Island, on Main Street, that was formally occupied by the “Irish Crossroads”. Gallery owner Debi Wickliffe, recently moved the store from the East end of town, to be in the heart of the community. She even puts out bowls of water on the sidewalk, for doggies that stroll by. Before or after lunch and dinner at one of downtown’s restaurants, shoppers can browse the won-
derful store. The Catbird Seat is a shop filled with Long Island art. We encourage the community to buy local art, support our artists, and take home your very own piece of Long Island. In addition to original paintings and prints, the gallery has one-of-a-kind, custom hand-painted furniture that has been repurposed and upcycled. Furniture can also be painted to your specifications. Hand-crafted artisan products include jewelry, carved pens, mosaics, crafts, home decor, local note cards, gifts, accessories and apparel. It has an amazing network of local artists. For your fun and enjoyment you can create your own art. You don’t have to be an artist. The Catbird Seat offers art classes on painting (acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, chalk paint), mosaics, jewelry making, seasonal crafts and more. For more information please call (631) 987-4213.

Medford Multicare Center for Living: Redefining Excellence Continued from Page 1 by Jill Smoller RN, FNP, LNHA Medford Multicare Center for Living, under new management since 2016, has transformed into a premier provider of health services, just as the region faces a surging demand for the latest developments in specialized medical treatment plans. The number of New York State residents over age 60 is steadily rising and is expected to grow to over 5.3 million — more than 25 percent of the population — by 2030, according to the State Office for the Aging. Meanwhile, Medford has quietly developed a portfolio of boutique health services to address the needs of that population, including a state-of-the-art rehabilitation gym, a sophisticated ventilator unit and a professional team of clinicians and nursing staff. The facility’s recent investments in both medical protocols and in guest amenities make it a standout in the industry, according to Bernard Chrisphonte, the center’s director of respiratory therapy, and a state-licensed nursing home administrator. “This is a very impressive setting for medical practice in Suffolk County,” Chrisphonte said. “I have 30 years helping patients, and I would say that Medford is truly unparalleled in the region.” Among the treatments available at Medford is a 40-bed ventilator unit equipped with piped-in oxygen and one of
the most advanced alarm systems in the industry, used to identify and halt emergencies in the most delicate of clinical settings. Chriphonte and his team of therapists have successfully weaned 17 residents from technical ventilation over the last 18 months, a nearly unprecedented success rate he attributes to aggressive treatment and a high quality of care at the facility. “When you have board certified pulmonologists making rounds three times a week to oversee care and discuss any concerns that come up with patients and family, that goes quite a long way. That is our standard,” Chrisphonte said. “Our team comes to work each day with the goal of being second to none.” In a different wing of the recently modernized facility, rehabilitation and occupational therapy programs de-
liver superior care in innovative exercise and treatment studios, which include specialized equipment designed to restore patients to their greatest possible mobility. Under the supervision of skilled therapists and trainers, residents at Medford receive the latest treatments that were simply unavailable years ago. “To be honest, this would not been possible five have or six years ago, but we’ve essentially rebuilt ourselves into a top-tier provider of advanced medical services,” Chrisphonte said. As patients increasingly expect individualized care plans and treatments that allow them to return home quick ly after illness or accident, Medford Multicare Center is of poised to offer a complete regimen health services in a lavish setting that is certain to exceed expectations.

Leftover - Loaded Potato Bites!
Ingredients 2 cups leftover mashed potatoes 2 tablespoons of flour 2/3 cup of shredded cheddar cheese 3 strips bacon 1/3 cup scallions, chopped 1 egg 1 ¼ - 1 ½ cups Italian bread crumbs Oil for frying Salt and pepper Ranch or honey mustard for dipping Directions 1. Take potatoes out of the fridge and let sit for a few minutes to take the chill off a bit. Meanwhile, shred the cheese, chop scallions, and cook bacon then dice finely. Add potatoes and flour to a large mixing bowl and stir to combine well, then add cheese, bacon, and scallions. Take about a heaping tablespoon of mixture and roll with hands into a small ball. It if doesn’t hold its shape, add a little more flour to make the potatoes sturdy. Repeat until done. 2. Heat oil in a medium sauce pan – or use your fryer – over medium/medium high heat to about 350-375 degrees. Whisk egg in a small bowl and season with salt and pepper. Place bread crumbs in an additional bowl. Dip each potato ball in egg mixture and then roll in bread crumbs until fully coated. Set aside on a sheet pan. 3. Test oil with one potato ball. The oil should bubble when potato is in oil and should take about 1-2 minutes to brown and cook through. (If it takes longer, the oil needs to be hotter, if it browns too quickly on the outside and the inside is still cold, the temperature needs to be lower.) Once oil is ready, add potato balls in small batches and fry for 1-2 minutes – it will depend on size. Remove with slotted spoon and place on paper-lined plate to allow excess oil to drain off. Repeat until done. 4. Allow to cool for a minute or two or until golden brown and serve with dipping sauce.

Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel Losquadro, New York State Assemblyman Andrew Garbarino and Councilman Neil Foley are announcing a free child safety seat check on Saturday, Aug. 5th, 2017, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Blue Point Fire Department, 205 Blue Point Avenue, Blue Point, NY 11715. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, along with certified technicians from the Brookhaven Highway Department, will be on hand to inspect car seats and make sure children are riding in the right car seats for their age and size as they grow. “In passenger cars, child safety seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers,” said Superintendent Losquadro. “Most parents are confident they have correctly installed their child’s car seat, but in most cases (59%) the seat has not been installed correctly. I am proud to provide this free car seat inspection to teach parents and caregivers how to identify the right car seat for a child’s age and size, and how to correctly install and use their seats.” Inspections are by appointment only; call (631) 363-3770 to reserve your spot.

What are the William Floyd School Board and Superintendent Trying to Hide?
Despite numerous requests and extensive coverage that The South Shore Press Newspaper gives the William Floyd School District, Superintendent Kevin Coster
recommended and the Board of Education approved three paid out of town newspapers to publish legal notices for the William Floyd School District. Once again, the three papers selected were the Long Island Advance, a Patchogue newspaper, the Long Business News, a Hauppauge-based paper and Island Newsday, which is based out of Melville. All three papers must be purchased and the Long Island Advance and Business News truly provide no real coverage on the school district. When was the last time you saw the Long Island Advance or the Long Island Business News in a community store in the Mastic, Shirley, Mastic Beach or Moriches area? Earlier this year we once again reached out to the school district to request that the South Shore Press, a free newspaper be added to the list and used for legal notices. Once again we were told they would look into it, despite the thirty plus years of coverage that we have given to the William Floyd School District and our community. Why does this matter to you, the taxpayers and residents of Mastic, Shirley, Moriches and Mastic Beach? It’s called the system of checks and balances. We all remember the financial scandals that plagued the William Floyd School District not too long ago! We all remember the skyrocketing tax increases that this school board has voted for! The purpose of legal notices is to inform the public of what the school district is doing. What they are buying? Who they are hiring? What their plans are for a budget and tax increase?

Basically, how they are spending our tax dollars. The legal notices also allow local people to apply for jobs and allow local merchants to try and sell products to our school district. Why would our school board spend money with newspapers that don’t really cover our community or school district? Why would our school board place notices in two publications that are from outside this community and must be paid for? What is the William Floyd School Board trying to hide? It becomes even more interesting to us when you consider the fact that Robert Vecchio, the long time President of the William Floyd School Board, recently

Honoring Late Civic Leader Dear Editor: On August 1st, the Town of Brookhaven will unveil a new sign at Martha Avenue Park in Bellport, naming the ball fields in honor of late civic leader Tony Gazzola. Mr. Gazzola, who passed away in 2015, was the founder of the South Country Community Conference and the man most responsible for the town creating Martha Avenue Park. He also worked with the town to establish the Safe Summer Youth Program at the park in the 1990s. The 6:30 pm unveiling will be hosted by Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Michael Loguercio. It will be held during the Suffolk County Police Department’s “National Night Out,” a program designed to heighten crime and drug awareness; generate support for and
screened to run as a Republican-Conservative for the Suffolk County Legislature’s 3rd District seat. Mr. Vecchio wasn’t chosen, many political insiders say, because of the large tax increases he has implemented. The South Shore Press has provided extensive coverage of this race and Mr. Vecchio’s activities on the school board. Was the South Shore Press cut out of the legals because of this coverage? We are going to continue to provide great coverage of the William Floyd School District, its faculty and students but this year we are going to be paying even closer attention to the William Floyd School Board. What are they trying to hide?
participation in local anti-crime efforts; strengthen neighborhood spirit and to help neighborhoods organize and fight back. The program runs from 6 pm to 9:30pm and is co-hosted by the Town of Brookhaven and the Bellport Hagerman East Patchogue Alliance, Inc. Supervisor Romaine said, “Tony’s legacy looms large in the East Patchogue-Bellport community and it is fitting that we honor him in this way. The people who use the fields should know that this park is there because of his efforts.” Councilman Loguercio said, “I am very proud to have the opportunity to join Tony’s family and friends as we recognize all he did to make this community a better place to live. I encourage all those who have been touched by his ‘can-do’ spirit to celebrate his life with us.” Sincerely, Town of Brookhaven

Question:
My mother recently fell and is in a rehabilitation center with Medicare paying her bill. I don’t think I will be able to take her home this time; it seems that she will need full time nursing home care. I understand that there is a ďŹ veyear lookback. " the " " " " " " " the program individual is applying for. For Chronic Medicaid, the Medicaid that will pay for a nursing home, the applicant can have up to $14,850.00 in their name in non-retirement assets. They can have an unlimited amount of retirement assets so long as they are receiving a maximized monthly distribution. An irrevocable pre-paid funeral is also considered an exempt resource. You did not mention whether your Mother was married or single. Where the applicant is married and there is a spouse living in the primary residence, that residence is also exempt. With respect to income, the applicant is permitted to maintain $50.00 per month of their income. All excess income must be contributed to the cost of their care at the nursing home. Again, where there is a spouse there are certain circumstances where the community spouse can retain a portion of the institutionalized spouse’s income.
With respect to the ďŹ ve-year lookback, that is a requirement for Chronic Medicaid only (there is no lookback for Community Medicaid – the Medicaid which covers the cost of homecare). The lookback refers to the concept that upon entering the nursing home and applying for beneďŹ ts the applicant must provide full ďŹ nancial disclosure for the ďŹ ve-year immediately prior to institutionalization for herself and her spouse assuming she is married. In the event that the applicant transferred any assets out of his or her name, there will be a penalty assessed unless those transfers are considered “exemptâ€? transfers for the purpose of applying for Medicaid. Transfers which will be considered exempt are; transfers to the spouse (this is the concept of Spousal Refusal in New York); transfers to a disabled child; transfer of the primary residence to a “caretaker childâ€? this is a child who has lived with the parent requiring nursing home care for the two years immediately prior to institutionalization providing some level of care support; and ďŹ nally, transfers of the primary residence to a sibling with an equity interest who lived in that residence for one year prior to institutionalization. Transfers other than those listed, in most cases, will create a period of Medicaid ineligibility. In all cases, when dealing with the possibility of long term care it is important to consult with an elder law attorney who concentrates in this area. In most cases there are planning techniques which can help to alleviate if not eliminate the ďŹ nancial burden when facing the cost of nursing home care.

is critical to minimize pain as well as optimize performance, so extra electrolytes taken for 48 hours prior aids in minimizing aches and soreness.â€? • Get Hot: Heat therapy increases the ow of oxygen to the affected area that’s in pain. “When I have an arthritic day, just using heat—keeping the joint warm—has really been helpful,â€? says Pam Shriver, the award-winning tennis pro and ESPN tennis broadcaster. • Go Topical: So suggests Dr. Aristotle Economou, author and acclaimed Beverly Hills physician. “Acetaminophen has a narrow therapeutic window, meaning the difference between a safe and effective dose and an overdose, which could lead to liver toxicity, is a relatively small increment in milligram consumption.â€? “The Salonpas Lidocaine 4% Pain Relieving Gel-Patch provides the maximum strength of lidocaine available without a prescription,â€? says Dr. Bob Arnot, who served as Chief Medical Correspondent for NBC and CBS News. “It desensitizes aggravated nerves and provides unscented numbing relief for up to eight hours. A welcome alternative for people who prefer to avoid taking pills, the active ingredients in Salonpas are absorbed through the skin so they go directly to the pain site and you get fast, long-lasting relief that won’t upset your digestion. You simply smooth the patch over the area where you want relief and it’ll stick there, soothing your pain away.â€? The No. 1 brand of patches in the world, Salonpas is available at major national drug, food and mass merchandise stores nationwide, including Walmart, Target, Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid and many others. - (NAPSI)

in all three generations involve: ENCOURAGE FAMILY TOGETHERNESS – UP TO A POINT – Grandparents who feel either excluded from seeing their grandchildren often (once a month,) or who feel pressured to see them too much (baby-sit every Thursday; prepare lunch every Friday) are more likely to be difďŹ cult to deal with. Sit down and discuss what kind of togetherness would feel right for them and for you! Then come up with a plan that works for all. ACCEPT THAT THERE WILL BE DISAGREEMENTS – Keep in mind that when it comes to making decisions about child rearing, the child’s parents are entitled to the ďŹ nal word. To avoid constant friction and bickering, be clear and ďŹ rm about this – but be diplomatic. BE FLEXIBLE Children are capable of dealing with different house rules. Before long, they learn that at Grandma’s house you can’t put your feet on the sofa (like you can at home,) but you can watch TV ‘til you fall asleep (which you can’t do at home). As long as the issues aren’t major, allow the grandparents some latitude. DON’T TAKE OFFENSE – It’s never easy to accept unsolicited child-care advice gracefully. Yet taking the counsel as an insult just escalates intergenerational tensions unnecessarily. So, instead, accept it for what it hopefully is – well-meaning advice from someone who cares. Use what you can and let the rest go! EDUCATE GRANDPARENTS – Thirty years ago, a child’s thumb sucking was considered a sign of emotional problems. Today, it’s considered a normal self-comforting habit. Then, it was widely believed that getting chilled could lead to a cold. Today, it’s known that a virus – not going without a hat and gloves -- causes a cold. Share contemporary child-care books with grandparents, affording them the latest information. PRESENT A UNITED FRONT – You and your spouse should run interference together – no matter whose parents have been doing the interfering. Think of your union not as the two of you against the grandparents, but the two of you for your family!! How Do You Do It?
By Barbara Guarino Kruk Recently a friend who had come to say farewell to two friends in the same week asked, “How do you deal with the pain and suffering?” It had been a particularly difficult week for me; the two deceased were personal friends. “I draw strength in knowing that at the lowest point in their lives, the surviving family knows that we are here to guide them through journey.” this I went on to explain that while this is a professional choice for us, it is also a vocation. Vocation? Yes, a vocation. To be committed a job that seven days a to is week, twenty-four hours a day, and does not stop for holidays, illness or personal enjoyment – is definitely a vocation. We love what we do because at the end of the day we know that we helped someone get through the pain of loss. While we cannot mend their broken hearts, that there them we can at the very least give them the tools and show will be a tomorrow. Their lives, like all of us who have endured the death of a loved one, know that life has changed; not ended. There will be times, depending on your but relationship to the deceased, that you will wish you had gone before them; sadly, we don’t get to make that decision, God makes that choice. Part of our job is to bring reality back to the surreal atmosphere of death. How? If you have ever been in this situation, you will recall that the whole experience thrusts one into a state of utter confusion. Days, perhaps weeks inahospital environment; bringing your loved one home to die under hospice care; or the tragedy of a sudden death, can all lead to mental and physical collapse. We try to bring a sense of normalcy to the situation. Great care is taken to restore the deceased to a point where they were happy and functioning; which brings tremendous comfort to their family. We assist with many aspects of the financial questions families may have for their future; directing people to name new beneficiaries, to seek professional legal or financial advice, and filling out insurance claims or government and union claims. Life must and shall continue for the survivors, but sometimes they need help getting back on track. I find that with most marriages, there is usually one spouse who is delegated to keeping the household finances. When that person dies, their survivor is left with dealing with their grief as well as their day to day living expenses; which can be frightening, especially for the elderly. I won’t lie, there are many times, and as I grow older and more involved with the good people of the community, that I find myself getting caught into the web of depression. Coupled with all the personal issues we all carry, life can seem daunting. Then I get a hug from someone who tells me, “I could not have gotten through this without you” and hope is renewed. How can we do what we do? The love we receive from people who are in great pain gives us the fortitude to face each challenging day and the knowledge that we can, and hopefully do, make a difference in someone’s life. God bless all of you.
