This is the Moriches Bay Project’s biggest fundraising eﬀort of the entire year and by becoming an oﬃcial event sponsor, you played an essential role in helping us to achieve our mission to clean Moriches Bay, one oyster at a time. Race For Brookhaven Town Clerk Heats Up By Barbara LaMonica When residents in the Town of Brookhaven go to the polls on November 7th, they will be asked to choose between two individuals running for Town Clerk. Incumbent Town Clerk Donna Lent is seeking her second four-year term and is being challenged by Cindy Morris. Lent, age 64, is a member of the Independence Party and is cross-endorsed by the Republican and Conservative parties. She reported being notified that she received the endorsement of the Women’s Equality Party. Prior to election four years ago as Town Clerk, Lent served as Chief Deputy Town Clerk which she began in 2010 under former Town Clerk Patricia Eddington. Cindy Morris, age 39, will appear on the Democratic and Working Family Party lines of the ballot. Morris owns a consulting business working with non-profits and is a mother of two children, ages 11 and 8. Since taking office, Lent has spearheaded numerous initiatives including, but not limited to implementation of an Electronic Management System for the digitalization of nearly 18,000,000 in paper records; worked on the town’s Information Technology Department bringing the offices

of the Clerk, Building, Finance, Highway Engineering, Assessor and Personnel into the Laser fiche production environment so the finalized records are digitalized in real time; established a Central Scanning Repository; implemented use of Laser fiche Forms Module to expand the town’s Electronic Town Clerk Donna Lent Content Management System; worked closely with the Information Technology Department to create the online death order form for funeral directors; restructured the Archived Records Center streamlined procedures of the Town Clerk’s office to increase efficiency and decrease waste; reduced personnel and overtime expenses; conducted seven Continued on page 8

2017 Colonial Youth and Family Services Golf Outing On Tuesday June 27, 2017, Colonial Youth and Family Services hosted their 38th annual golf outing. This year the not for profit community agency honored Town of Brookhaven Supervisor, Ed Romaine for all his support through his many years as an elected official. The day was filled with great weather, golf, raffles, food, contests, auction items, and very generous supporters of Colonial. A good time was had by all and Colonial would like to thank everyone who came out or supported the event in any way. Monies raised that day assist with much needed programs in our community.

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP Memories: 50 Years As A Suffolk Based Journalist

 By Karl Grossman  Memories sprung into my head as I walked into the meeting room of the Suffolk    County Legislature last week to receive a

proclamation from the legislature honoring me for more than 50 years as a Suffolk based journalist and spotlighting an archive  of my work that has been established. I was in this room regularly in the mid    1960s covering the Suffolk County Board  of Supervisors. Last week I looked at the    horseshoe table in front, where the 10  members of the board sat—the supervisors  of the 10 towns of Suffolk. It’s been widened  since the days of the board to 18 places for    the 18 members of the legislature.  I thought of some of the remarkable members of the  Board of Supervisors—Evans K. Griffing, supervisor of  Shelter  Island, Harry Kangeiser from Islip, Bob Flynn  from Huntington, and John V. N. Klein, the Smithtown     supervisor and the board’s last chairman. The board after  two centuries was dissolved due to a lawsuit citing the    one-person-one-vote court rulings of the 1960s. A panel     of equal population, a Suffolk Legislature, of 18 districts was established in 1970 to replace it.   Mr. Klein, so very committed to this county, gave up   being Smithtown supervisor to run to be a legislator on   the new panel and he became its first presiding officer. He  guided it in its early years, forging a continuum between  the board and legislature. Thereafter he became Suffolk County executive with his biggest achievement the first-of-its-kind   Suffolk County Farmland Preservation    Program  which  has allowed so much of Suffolk to remain     agriculturally productive and green.  On the walls of the meeting room were portraits of the  past 18 presiding officers of the legislature. Down the row  of photos from Mr. Klein’s was that of John Wehrenberg  of Holbrook. My mind went back to 1971 and the tarmac  at the Sydney, Nova Scotia airport. A year before, as an   investigative reporter then for the daily Long Island Press,      about the oil industry seeking to drill I broke the story  in the Atlantic. Strong opposition developed on Long  Island to drilling off our shores. The following year, Shell    Canada invited a delegation of Suffolk legislators to visit     the first rig set up in the Atlantic, off Nova Scotia.  drilling  No press was allowed. But the legislators going listed my    name as part of the delegation.  “You don’t think you’re going to get on this helicopter,      a Shell Canada executive told me on Mr. Grossman,”  the tarmac. Mr. Wehrenberg and the other legislators  intervened, he telling the Shell Canada executive: “If Karl      isn’t going, we’re not going.” The men from Shell Canada  huddled, and soon I was on the chopper out to the rig.   The visit was instructive—it was clear on the rig, with its    equipment in  preparation for a blow-out and spills, that      off-shore drilling  is a dicey proposition. I recall heading back  to Long Island with the legislators, us talking about   the  impacts on  Long Island of oil hitting our beaches.  I looked at the photo of another presiding officer, Lou Howard of Amityville. Now Lou and I were at odds  over nuclear power. He was an ardent supporter of the   Shoreham nuclear power plant. It was to be the first of 7 to 

Veteran Journalist Honored Journalist and investigative reporter Karl Grossman was honored at the June 20, 2017 General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature for his 50 plus year career and to celebrate the establishment of the Karl Grossman Research Archive at the East Hampton Library earlier this year. The archive will include Mr. Grossman’s extensive body of writing and reporting dating back to 1962 as well as documents related to his backup research. According to East Hampton Library executive director Dennis Fabiszak, the library is in the process of scanning the thousands of documents that will make up the archive which he estimates is about one fifth complete. The library hopes to obtain grant funding that will enable completion of the project by the end of the year. “The East Hampton Library is very happy to be able to provide digital access to the extensive history of articles and research collected by Karl Grossman over the past half century,” said Mr. Fabiszak. “This digital research archive will be a great resource for both local residents and political leaders.” 11 nuclear power plants in Suffolk. Grassroots opposition to Suffolk turning into what nuclear promoters at the time called a “nuclear park” led to election defeats for pronuclear officials. But Lou held on and stuck to his pronuclear position. He was a highly affable fellow, however, and an aviation instructor. One day, we were talking about flying and he invited me to go fly with him. Over Long Island, he gave me the wheel and after a while the plane began bucking from turbulence. It was scary. But Lou advised, “Just go with it.” I let the plane be bumped around, and finally the turbulence ended; it was again flying straight and steady. Lou had things wrong about nuclear power, but his philosophy on how to deal with turbulence was right-on. In addition to a syndicated weekly column which appears in several Long Island publications including The East Hampton Press, The Shelter Island Reporter and the South Shore Press, Mr. Grossman’s work has appeared in a broad range of diverse publications including Newsday, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Christian Science Monitor, The Baltimore Sun, E The Environmental Magazine, The Village Voice, Long Island Jewish World and the Columbia Journalism Review. He regularly writes for a number of websites including CounterPunch and The Huffington Post. Mr. Grossman is the author of several books, including Power Crazy about the now defunct Shoreham nuclear power plant. He is the host of Enviro CloseUp which can be viewed nationally on Free Speech TV. Mr. Grossman has been recognized for his significant contributions to journalism and is the recipient of several prestigious awards including the George Polk Award and the James Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism. He is a professor of journalism at SUNY Old Westbury where he teaches a class in investigative journalism. “Karl Grossman is a shining example of journalism at its best,” said Legislator Bridget Fleming. “His insights have shed light on critical issues in our community and the world for decades. I congratulate East Hampton Library for compiling this important collection of Karl’s work, and I’m grateful that he continues to inform and enlighten us with his excellent reporting.” Legislator Al Krupski agrees, “Karl has had an extraordinary career and his reporting greatly contributed to the betterment of our society. He often covered issues overlooked by others and he certainly raised awareness about the threats to our natural environment by educating and informing his readers. His reporting is just as relevant today as it has been in the past. The Karl Grossman Research Archive is such an important project because it will give future generations of writers and historians key insights to our time.” Those interested in supporting The Karl Grossman Research Archive can do so by contacting the East Hampton Library. and Bridget Fleming of Noyac presented me with the proclamation which, incidentally, cited “my extensive reporting and writing on the dangers of nuclear power.” If it wasn’t for the Suffolk Legislature under the leadership of Presiding Officer Gregory Blass of Jamesport in the 1980s, we’d have nuclear plants in Suffolk today. Mr. Fabiszak, explaining what’s been named the Karl Grossman Research Archive, said: “We are digitizing all of Karl’s articles and also all of the primary research which he used to write the articles. When it is done it will be the largest data base of historic documents in Suffolk County.…Already we have about 7,000 documents online, available and fully searchable. On June 22nd, Councilman Kevin LaValle was joined by Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore and officers from the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) for a “Coffee with a Cop” event at Selden Bagels Your Way. “Coffee with a Cop” was launched in Hawthorne, California in 2011 when members of the Hawthorne Police Department were looking for ways to interact more successfully with the citizens they served each day. The key to “Coffee with a Cop’s” growing success is that it opens the door for interactions outside of the crisis situations that typically bring law enforcement officers and community members together. “Coffee with a Cop is a great program,” said Councilman LaValle. “It helps to encourage communication between the police, residents and business owners and creates a stronger bond that is beneficial to all. I thank Selden Bagels Your Way for hosting us and the Suffolk County Police Department for all they do to keep Brookhaven safe.”

 Girl Scouts Honored With Gold Awards

Brookhaven Town Clerk Donna Lent (right) recently attended the Suffolk County Girl Gold Award Ceremony at East Wind Caterers in Wading River. During the event, she honored 12 Gold Award recipients from Brookhaven Town, including Khadija Saad (second from left) and Courtney Cronin (second from right) from Troop 1331 in Shirley. Khadija made the cat houses for strays for the O-Cat Group and Courtney made ﬁdget blankets for dementia residents at the Bristal of Lake Grove to earn their Gold Awards. The Gold Award is the highest achievement within the Girl Scouts of the USA, earned by Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts. Only 5.4% of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earn the Gold Award.

Practicing Grill Safety

 

  Safety for Kids – The grilling area  should be designated as a “No Play  Zone,” keeping kids and pets away  

from the equipment. To help kids learn about gas grill safety, the Propane Education & Research Council has   launched the fun interactive website  www.propanekids.com.     Ventilation  1. Always keep the lid open when lighting your grill. Don’t close it  until you are sure the grill is lit.   2. Keep the grill in a well-ventilated outdoor area, at least ten feet away  from the house—and at least three feet away from trees and shrubs.  3. Never cover the bottom of the grill with foil - it can restrict air  circulation.    4. Always use and store propane cylinders outdoors in an upright  position.  5. After filling or exchanging a cylinder, take it home immediately.  While transporting the cylinder, keep your vehicle ventilated and the  valve closed or capped. Do not leave the cylinder in your vehicle.     Firing Up The Grill Safely  1. Never use matches or lighters to check for leaks. And never use fluid with propane grills.    starter    2. Do not smoke while handling a propane cylinder, and keep all flammable materials away from the grill.   3. If the grill does not ignite within ten seconds, turn off the gas, keep   the lid open and wait five minutes before trying again. If the igniter  to light the grill after two or three tries, turn off the gas and replace fails  the igniter according to the manufacturer’s instructions. 4. Regularly   check the tubes that lead into the burner for blockage from insects or food grease. 5. Neverattempt to repair, clean or clear blockages on a hot grill.        General  Safety Tips     1. Always have one person in charge of the fire at all times. Never leave  a hot grill unattended.  2. Never attempt to repair the tank valve or the appliance yourself. See  a propane gas dealer or a qualified appliance repair person. Be sure to  locate your model number and the manufacturer’s consumer inquiry  phone number and write them on the front page of your manual.  3. If you smell gas and you are able to, safely turn off the cylinder valv,  turning it to the right (clockwise). Immediately leave the area and call      911 or your local fire department. Community Viewpoint Supporting The Troops Dear Editor: We were informed by Medford Chamber board member, Noreen Iadanza who represents Hunter Business school that staff members and students organized a drive to raise items to send to our troops. They chose the 577th Expeditionary Red Horse squadron that is deployed overseas. Students put collection boxes by all classrooms for the donations. They collected items of clothing, food items, personal hygiene items and letters to help boost the spirits of the soldiers while they are away from home. School children also made cards and wrote letters thanking them for serving our country. The package sent weighed almost 80 pounds and was greatly appreciated by the troops. The Medford Chamber is more than just a group of business people looking after our selves. We are greatly involved in our community. An Open Letter To New York State Comptroller Dear Hon. Thomas P. DiNapoli: The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is New York’s largest and most frequented transportations system serving millions of residents in the New York City, Long Island and Hudson Valley regions each year. A large amount of taxpayerfunded resources are used to fund, operate, and manage this system each year. Yet, the system appears to be rife with mismanagement, inefficiency, and the inability to reach reasonable performance standards, leading to intense public outcry in recent months. Your previous audits of the MTA, including a forensic audit of the payroll and overtime practices, exposed significant amounts of fraud, waste and abuse, costing taxpayers millions of dollars. We feel that these deeply troubling findings reinforce the need for further investigation. In light of these findings, we are calling for a full, top to bottom, forensic audit of the MTA and a subsequent investigation into the apparently base fraud and malfeasances that has caused rapid decline in services available to residents and seemingly unenforced performance standards by the organization. How is it possible that a taxpayer-funded

organization, which had a surplus of nearly $1 billion roughly a decade ago, is now projected to face a budget deficit in 2020? Additionally, why has the state made a $7.3 billion commitment of the MTA’s 2015-19C capital plan when it is clear that an increase in funding has not lead to an increase in efficiency and performance? We believe that these questions, and more, can only be properly answered as a result of your office conducting a full, forensic audit of the MTA. As elected officials, we have a responsibility to ensure that taxpayer money is being used fairly, effectively, and efficiently, and it has become abundantly clear that the leadership at the MTA has accomplished one of these goals. Will Fight For More Police Presence In 3rd District

Suffolk County Legislature candidate Rudy Sunderman called for an increased police presence in the communities of Mastic, Mastic Beach and Shirley. Sunderman pointed out that the area’s growing population is underserved by Suffolk Police, and said once he is elected he will have a police sub-station established to increase response times and have a more direct law enforcement presence in the community. Sunderman pointed to the incident that occurred at the William Floyd High School graduation this past Sunday as a glaring

Water Safety If you know how to stay safe in and around water, swimming can be a lifelong source of fun and exercise. Here are six things you should know: 1. Never swim alone. Swim only when a lifeguard is on duty. 2. Supervise children whenever they are in or near water. dence. Born in Baltimore, MD and long time resident of Mastic, Barbara was an attorney and member of both the Suffolk Bar Association and New York State Bar Association. Barbara loved to cook, read, dive and travel; especially to visit and spend time with family. She was a passionate fan of the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens sports teams. Barbara loved life, loved helping people and was considered a true guardian angel. Friends and family found strength in her conﬁdent, can-do attitude. Predeceased by her father; Benjamin, Barbara is survived by her mother; Margaret Parson, siblings; Carol Parson-Yingling, Linda Parson-Holden, Paula Parson-Yocum, Chad Parson, and the loves of her life; her partner of ﬁfteen years, Vincent Parisi and cherished pets; Lovie and Jazz. Following a private cremation at Mt.Pleasant Cemetery inCenter Moriches, family and friends gathered for memorial services at Davin’s Funeral Home in Mastic.

His tent had a tiny hole andthe liquid was dripping down  on him. He covered himself with his poncho, rolled over in his cot, thankful that he     didn’t have to stand guard tonight.  was       At first light they were called to muster. Everyone in  awe. The jungle had         nearly vanished. The trees were leafless, as if a fire had gone through the place.     They all cheered. “Man, this stuff is powerful” announced one of his buddies in       his Texan drawl. They felt more confident. Now they could see the enemy literally      through the trees. He felt sad and strange; having been raised on a farm he knew         that this type of destruction kills more than just leaves. The young man would     learn how right he was as time passed.   It didn’t take long before the leadership skills of the young man were recognized and he  was promoted to Sergeant. He served honorably for three years in the war         torn devastation of Viet Nam.    Fifty-one years after that fateful night in Viet Nam, the man who lived through   effects  that event, finds himself, along with countless  other soldiers suffering the     of Agent Orange, the chemical defoliant used to clear out the jungles. Little did he       know that he would fall victim to the aftermath of those deadly chemicals and how         harm his young body.     it would Today, having served three tours in Viet Nam, the man now suffers the side  effects of this exposure. Far too many of the men under his  command died during    battle, or from the diseases caused by Agent Orange. He continues to be treated at   the VA for his conditions.    “Not  When asked if he regrets his time in the military, he replies, one day.  I did what I thought was right for my country and the cause of freedom. “ I love this man; he is my husband Connie.        To all the young men and women serving in  far  off places the cost of freedom       does not come cheap.
