Local Students Honored at Dellecave Awards

Several students from Southeast Brookhaven were recently honored at the 17th Annual Butch Dellecave Awards held on June 11, 2017 at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook. Named in memory of the legendary educator, official, and coach Gaetano “Butch” Dellecave, the award is the product of a highly successful 17-year partnership between local school districts in Suffolk County and the award organizers: the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, the Butch Dellecave Foundation, and Newsday. Athletic Directors from all sixty-six Suffolk County school districts are asked to nominate one male and one female from their high school senior class. Nominees must be students who are not only at the top of their game, but also score high in classroom performance and in their commitment to the local community service. About the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. – a not-for- profit 501(c)(3) community-based organization – is celebrating its 50th anniversary. It is the county’s federally designated Community Action Agency, designed to assist low-income families and individuals. The agency’s mission is to promote a goal of self-sufficiency by broadening the minds of children, revitalizing communities, and assisting families and children in need through coordination of public and private resources.

The Fourth of July is rapidly approaching and with it, the time-honored tradition of patriotic ďŹ rework displays. The Firemenâ€™s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) urges New Yorkers not to use ďŹ reworks or other similar devices themselves, but instead to leave them to the professionals. New York State recently legalized the use of certain sparkling devices, and many counties now allow the sale of these types of ďŹ reworks. Despite their legalization, sparkling devices remain dangerous in amateur hands. According to a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) report, sparklers accounted for more than a quarter, or approximately 28 percent, of all ďŹ reworks injuries in 2014. Despite their relatively benign appearance, sparklers can be extremely dangerous. The tip of a sparkler burns at a temperature of nearly 2,000 degree Fahrenheit, which is as hot as a blow torch. Furthermore, nearly half of all ďŹ res reported on Independence Day were caused by ďŹ reworks or similar devices. â€œThe misguided legalization of sparklers and other devices does not change the fact that ďŹ reworks and sparklers are extremely dangerous,â€? said FASNY President Ken Pienkowski. â€œFireworks should only be used by professionals who have undergone the proper training and certiďŹ cation. There are countless, excellent ďŹ reworks displays across New York State, and FASNY urges all New Yorkers to enjoy these shows and avoid a serious injury over the holiday.â€? In 2015, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that 67 percent of all ďŹ reworks-related injuries occurred in the month surrounding July 4, and that children and young adults under the age of 20 constituted 42 percent all those injured. For children under the age of ďŹ ve, sparklers accounted for 65 percent of the total number of injuries sustained. â€œWe hope everybody has a happy, safe Fourth of July. Should there be an emergency or unsafe situation, we urge New Yorkers to call 911 for help. Itâ€™s better to be safe than sorry,â€? said President Pienkowski. These hand pieces were all 3D printed on our Makerbot 2x and Lulzbot Taz 6 printers here at the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library for the e-NABLE Community. Enabling the Future and the e-NABLE Community, “is an amazing group of individuals from all over the world who are using their 3D printers to create free 3D printed hands and arms for those in need of an upper limb assistive device.” Our Hand Challenge participants will follow video tutorials step-by-step to build usable prosthetic hands for recipients in need. She has ﬁlled her schedule this year with six AP courses including Government and Politics, Calculus, Environmental Science, European History, Computer Science and English Literature and Composition. Making friends is a skill. And the ďŹ rst step in developing that skill is knowing how to get along with others.

People who are good at getting along with others take an interest in what other people like. They learn to develop interests that make them enjoyable to be around. The more things you know how to do that involve interacting with other people, the more likely you are to make friends.  Obituaries    The Fan FERDINAND CICERELLI, 88, of Shirley, died peacefully surrounded by his loving      By Barbara Guarino Kruk family at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital on June 18, 2017. He was born in Manhattan, and had served honorably in the United States Army during World War II. He was a Supervisor at Stonybrook University Hospital. Ferdinand is survived by his beloved children Angela (Hugh) Turley, Michael (Teri), Salvatore (Tracey), Donna Franzino and  Fred. He was the cherished grandfather of eight and great grandfather of four. He is also survived by his brother Salvatore Esposito. He loved his work as an upholsterer, enjoyed  growing his garden and giving away all the vegetables and bring baskets to St. Jude. He was a fan of Mario Lanza, Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack. He loved being with his beautiful family and playing card games with them. A wonderful and loving family man, patriot and great faith. Family and friends were received at Roma Funeral Home in Shirley. A Mass was offered at St. Jude’s RC Church and entombment with military honors was held at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Coram. ********************************************************************** KEENEN WILMORE KING, 19, of Shirley, died tragically in an accident on June 22, 2017. Keenen was born in Huntington and was set to graduate from William Floyd High School on June 25th. His passion was riding and ﬁxing motorbikes and quads. He had perfected his athletic style with stunts on his motorbike. He loved the great outdoors, swimming at Smith Point Park, listening to music and being with his six siblings. He is survived by his mother Tina Maria and his father Wilmore Sands. He was the beloved brother of Keith, Kevin, Kyle, Kaylyn, Katima, and Keyona. He was the cherished grandson of Minnie Blackshear. Family and friends will be received Thursday at Roma Funeral Home in Shirley, on Friday a Church service will be offered at the Evergreen Baptist Church in Huntington and Interment will take place at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Center Moriches.



       



Graduation Day; a day that marks the culmination of twelve years of studying hard  and plotting the course for your future. A day of joy to be  shared with family and  friends. A day to celebrate your achievements and ponder dreams. Accolades your   from dotting grandparents, parties, gifts and the endless array of advice for your    journey to the ‘real world’.   This Graduation Day, held on Sunday, June 25,  2017, was for many a day  of sorrow and reflection. Two graduates, Tyrese Ramseur King, never   and Keenen    made it to their own graduation. Why? Because their young lives were suddenly, tragically, snatched from them. Two young men with bright hopes for the future  killed in senseless accidents.  The surviving families today mourn what should have been the highlight of their  Dreams   sons’ passage to manhood. The day they had worked so hard to accomplish.  shattered; lives ruined; hearts broken.  At the podium, the twin sisters of Keenen King, receive their diplomas, their hearts   heavy because their brother was supposed to be standing with them. Three of the  King children were to graduate today, but only two would make the walk up to the  stage.  For those in attendance the air was filled with broken promises. Promises that these young men and women were pledged when they first embarked on their educational    life. “Work hard, do well, stay in school, and you will be rewarded with a bright  future.” Tyrese and Keenen were expecting the fulfillment of the promise made to them twelve years ago.   Hundreds of students graduated from my alma Mata, William Floyd High School,  today, all with joy and some trepidation of what life holds for Their fears, their them.    struggles for adulthood all laid out before them, but they are the lucky ones; they will see tomorrow and go on to wonderful, productive lives. For Tyrese and Keenen    there are no tomorrows.     To all the wonderful, hard working students graduating today, my heart is filled with pride; you are our hope for a better world. To the parents, siblings, teachers,    classmates, teammates and friends of these two young men my heart is filled with   sorrow; the loss of any child is a profound loss for society and humankind. Our only prayer is that they are both in the loving care of their Maker.    Congratulations to the Class of 2017; Condolences to the grieving families of Tyrese and Keenen. May God bless all of you.On June 12th, after playing the game    of life for nearly seventy-nine years, William M. Kelleher, made a home run; he rounded the bases and drove in the winning run. Heaven was his prize.                    



Valedictorian Maciej Wlodek Maciej Wlodek is the picture of Longwood High School’s mantra: Pride, Heart, and Spirit. He has a very innovative mind with an unassuming nature and is truly committed to the culture and prosperity of the world around him. He has been the recipient of the prestigious Renssalear Medal and most recently has been named as a ﬁnalist in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. He looks forward to attending Stony Brook in the fall where he intends on studying Mathematics and Computer Science.

In addition, Jaclyn has been awarded Academic Achievement Awards in Honors English, AP Chemistry and US History and Government.
