Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center (BMHMC) has announced the launch of Moments Under Construction, a $2.5 million capital campaign to fund renovations to the Main Lobby and entrance of the Hospital, a project designed to give patients and visitors a welcoming and comfortable experience. Spearheaded by a generous donation from Walter and RoseMarie Ladick, the Lobby will be named in honor of the Ladick’s and in
memory of Mrs. Ladick’s late parents and late brother, Foster B. and Rose Aviano and Foster M. Aviano. The project recently broke ground and construction will be conducted in stages, ensuring minimum disruption to the public’s access to hospital services. All patients and visitors are being directed to the North parking lot and will enter the hospital through the Knapp Cardiac Care Center entrance. Continued on page 4

BMH Lobby Under Construction
Continued from page 1 “We are grateful to the Ladick’s for the lead gift that has enabled us to get this project underway,” said BMHMC President and CEO Richard T. Margulis. Joined by others from our community, including generous donations from an anonymous foundation and the Swezey Fuel Company, along with John and Toni Sullivan, Tom and Kathy Cullen, and Felix and Madeline Grucci, the importance and endorsement of the project is exceptional, with $1.3 Million committed to date. “More than just an entrance, the Walter and RoseMarie Ladick Lobby will be a gateway to the patient experience and a reflection of the high quality of care and state-of-the-art medical solutions available at Brookhaven.” said Mr. Margulis. It is designed to make all who enter feel welcome by putting patients, family members and other visitors at ease. According to the Campaign’s leadership – Mark S. Mulholland, Chairman of the BMHMC Board of Directors, and Thomas Cullen, BMHMC Development and Capital Campaign Chairman – impetus for the renovation is directly aligned to Brookhaven’s mission to provide quality, patient-centered care. Also guiding the Moments Under Construction Lobby Campaign is Vice
President and Chief Development Officer Rachel E. Schnabl. “The warmth of our community hospital will resonate throughout this new space thanks to the generosity of our donors who helped launch this campaign. Ms. Schnabl added, “The setting will provide patients, family members, visitors and employees with an area to gather that is welcoming and matches the level of compassionate care provided by our healthcare professionals. These are the meaningful moments we are truly building toward.” For more information on the Moments Under Construction campaign, naming opportunities and how you can make a donation, call the Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center Development office at 631 654 7350. Earlier this year, BMHMC completed a $60 million capital campaign for the 2017 opening of the 60,000 square foot, stateof-the-art, Knapp Cardiac Care Center, providing advanced interventional cardiac care capabilities and four new operating suites. BMHMC also acquired the former John J. Foley Nursing Rehabilitation Center from the County of Suffolk. This purchase will allow BMHMC to take a significant step forward in furthering their mission to serve the community with the care and services reflective of the community’s diverse needs.
County Clerk Update By Suffolk County Clerk Judy Pascale
Don’t Be Fooled! Like most counties throughout the United States, Suffolk County has seen its fair share of mortgage foreclosures since the decline of the housing and financial markets. And while the housing market has improved over the last couple of years, over 1,700 new foreclosure cases have started this year. Unfortunately, the large volume of foreclosures has led to new and creative ways for scammers to prey on those seeking to get out of finical difficulties. Several outfits, describing themselves as debt relief or foreclosure avoidance companies, have stolen thousands of dollars from unsuspecting homeowners attempting to save their homes and avoid foreclosure. Homeowners should know there are resources available to help navigate them through the process and help determine whether these companies can offer assistance or are just trying to make money while offering little or no help. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offers assistance by directing homeowners to HUD approved counseling agencies. They provide a searchable database that provides housing and credit counselors closest to your home. The HUD website can be accessed at HUD.gov. The New York Attorney General has also setup a site where you can determine whether the company offering to provide assistance is reputable and also away to report those that are not. Their site is available at AGScamHelp.com. It’s important for Suffolk County residents to utilize these tools to increase the likelihood that they avoid foreclosure. In 2016, nearly 5,000 homes entered the foreclosure process in Suffolk County.

4 Tips To Sleep Better During Allergy Season
Spring was the season of renewal. Plants and trees start to rebound from the harsh winter that claimed most of their leaves and vegetation. Birds return from their Southern vacations, us with their morning songs serenade and rebuild their nests in preparation for new arrivals. Unfortunately, there is another renewal that many people don’t look forward to in the spring: the return of hay fever season along with symptoms such as sneezing and sniffling that can give you sleepless nights. In an allergy survey conducted by HayMax (www.haymax.us), 92 percent of respondents said their hay fever symptoms affect their work, school or daily routine, which includes sleep patterns. “The trick to sleeping well when you suffer from hay fever is to reduce the amount of pollen getting into your body at night,” says Max Wiseberg, creator of HayMax Allergen Barrier Balm. People can tolerate a certain amount of pollen without reaction, he says, but once this amount is exceeded – called the trigger level – hay fever symptoms start to occur. Stay below this level at night, you won’t get the symptoms and your sleep won’t be affected. Go above it and that’s when the trouble starts. Wiseberg offers a few tips on how to avoid reaching that trigger level, allowing you to rest easy at night. • Keep bedding and fabrics clean. Vacuum the house regularly, especially beds and fabrics, such as bed covers and curtains, to remove pollen, dust and pet allergen particles. Wash bedding regularly to remove allergens and dry them indoors rather than on a clothes line to prevent pollen particles being blown onto them by the wind. • Keep the house closed from the outside world. Close windows and use an air conditioner, preferably with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Arresting) filter to capture pollen and dust particles, as well as cool and circulate the air. • Have a nightly routine before bed. Shower at night before sleeping to remove pollen particles and pet hair from your hair and body. Clear the nasal passages with water, or use a saline nasal spray, to clear pollen from the nose. Finally, apply an allergen barrier balm to the nostrils and around the bones of the eyes to trap pollen, dust and pet allergens before they enter the body. Ensure • that pets are well groomed. If you own a pet, shampoo it as much as possible to remove pet allergens and pollen particles, or ban it from the bedroom completely. “Loss of sleep because of hay fever is very significant, as it can impact how a person functions the next day at school or at work,” Wiseberg says. “The effect of sleep deprivation on productivity and health loses costs companies billions of dollars each year.”

Community Viewpoint STOP PSEG! Dear Editor: Brookhaven Councilman Dan Panico, NYS Assemblyman Thiele, NYS Senator LaValle along with many people and organizations in the communities of East Moriches and Eastport (such as the Eastport Green Project of which I am a member) have been working together to halt and re-direct the ongoing PSEG project to install up to 175 steel, mega-power poles near and adjacent to County Roads 55 and 51. The local opposition to PSEG’s ill-conceived project deserves support from all residents especially those in Eastport where project work is now centered. Councilman Panico in particular has done yeoman work to help develop and present opposition positions to this PSEG project. These huge, awful-looking poles disfigure and have no place in our or any residential community. Amazingly, PSEG began this project without meeting with the community. Assemblyman Thiele has advised that PSEG has tried this gambit before. This project must be re-directed so these power lines are buried for safety and security and many more reasons. As an Eastport homeowner and resident, I am upset. My neighbors are very upset. PSEG needs to be stopped. I wonder why no one in the community was pre-notified about the project AND why numerous workers, trucks and equipment were brought in from out of state to do this project work likely on an expedited basis at a much higher cost to ratepayers than if PSEG had done most of the work in house. Will we soon learn that calling in workers and equipment from other states and trying to rush this project to completion was inappropriate and will not only scar our beautiful communities but also cause electric bill rate spikes for everyone in the not too distant future. Please lend you investigative and editorial support to the fight to stop PSEG!
and following up on our meeting on March 13, 2017, I would welcome any comments you may have on this project. Additionally, if you could reach out to those who attended the meeting in March who would be willing to send letters of support that would be greatly appreciated. Our office will continue to keep you apprised of any future plans and of the Public Hearing. Sincerely, Kevin J. O’Brien, Esq. Murphy, Bartol & O’Brien, LLP

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP Patsy Mink Equal Opportunity Education Act
By Karl Grossman
Title IX, subsequently renamed the Patsy Mink Equal Opportunity Education Act, was signed into law by President Richard Nixon 45 years ago—on June 23, 1972. Among the areas of discrimination in the United States that it changed was the downplaying of women’s sports at educational institutions. A pioneer in Suffolk County in getting Title IX applied to sports for girls in schools was Eleanor A. Eckman, a physical education teacher at Bay Shore High School. Now retired after 31 years of teaching, Ms. Eckman, speaking from her home in Patchogue, was recounting the other day how school sports for females were minimized while male sports were being highlighted. “Not only highlighted but given more financial support,” she said. “There was inequity,” said Ms. Eckman. “We had pitiful uniforms and pitiful time in the gym or on the field.” Moreover, there was more time for play for boys. “There were four shorter seasons for girls. Way back then they didn’t think girls could last as long as boys. It was thought that females didn’t have the physical capabilities.” Further, at her school there was only one coach each for most girls’ sports while there were both coaches and assistant coaches for many boys’ sports. “I was the first person in Suffolk County to bring the situation to the New York State Division of Human Rights,” said Ms. Eckman. She brought the action in 1974 at the Suffolk office of the division, headed by Vera Parisi, formerly assistant director of the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission. The division “found that the school district was not in compliance” with Title IX. And the
district began making changes. “They didn’t have a choice. Either that or their having to go to court,” she said. Helpful on the issue, said Susan Barbash of Bay Shore, was a protest at a school board meeting. Girls in their athletic uniforms came to the meeting. Ms. Barbash, now a retired real estate developer, said “the story become legend. The girl athletes appeared in their uniforms to protest the inequitable funding” between boys’ and girls’ sports. “There was theatre involved.” Title IX, added Ms. Barbash, “was not just about playing sports, but access to college, as well. It has been so important.” Ms. Barbash went on from Bay Shore High School to Radcliffe College, which then merged into its parent institution, Harvard, with Harvard after centuries no longer having an all-male student body. Today as for sports in school for girls, “everything is much more equal,” said Ms. Eckman. However, there are still, she notes, areas of sports where a different situation exists for women. For example, “in major competitions in tennis, the men’s game is best of three-out-of-five while for women it’s two-out-of-three.” Apparently there’s still belief that women can’t last as long as men in sports contests. Jen Ackerman is a physical education teacher in the Eastport-South Manor Central School District. Today, indeed, girls and boys sports are regarded as “equivalent,” said Ms. Ackerman, a phys ed teacher for 19 years. “It’s come a long way,” said Ms. Ackerman of Manorville. The legislation creating Title IX was sponsored in the U.S. Senate by Birch Bayh of Indiana while Patsy Mink
Eleanor A. Eckman of Hawaii was its sponsor in the House of Representatives. The law was renamed for Ms. Mink in 2002 after her death that year. On the Senate floor, in advocating for Title IX, Mr. Bayh declared: “We are all familiar with the stereotype of women as pretty things who go to college to find a husband…and finally marry [and] havechildren….But the facts absolutely contradict these myths about the ‘weaker sex’ and it is time to change our assumptions.” operating Title IX covers educational institutions receiving federal financial assistance. The U.S. Department of Education standards include “whether the selection of sports and levels of competition effectively accommodate the interests and abilities of members of both sexes; the provision of equipment and supplies; scheduling of games and practice times; provision of locker rooms, practice and competitive facilities.” For schools that do not receive federal aid, a third of states—including New York—have enacted parallel statutes similar to Title IX covering them. But that’s only a third. As to more that should be done now regarding women and sports, Ms. Eckman, who retired in 1999, said that “in professional sports, women arestill not paid at the by TV, same level as men.” Also, “I don’t think coverage newspapers and the rest of media is at the same level. It’s getting there.” And, “in most sports they always have the finals of the men as the last event. The finals for women are the day before. The highlight is the men’s finals.”
Is it luck or skill? Maybe both, plus a hardworking, dedicated committee. Since March 2007 when Jesse Garcia won election as chairman of the Republican Committee, it has been successful time after time in winning local elections; to date, every elected position except one in the town of Brookhaven. That’s an amazing record. It’s no wonder the annual golf event was a success with at least 300 attendees including golfers, held at Great Rock Golf Club, 141 Fairway Drive, Wading River.
Sweet Smell of Success
Golf, cocktails, dinner & ugh! Cigars - is an Annual Brookhaven town Republican Party golf classic that is “widely regarded by hundreds of players and attendees as one of the very best and enjoyable networking events of the 2017 campaign season”, said Brookhaven Town Republican Chairman Jesse Garcia “This is an exciting time to be a partner with the Brookhaven Republican Party as we continue to elect more Republicans than any other political organization,” stated Garcia, and continue our successful fight to “make town government business friendly and accountable,” he said.

It’s hard to believe that this school year is coming to a close. I want to CONGRATULATE this year’s graduating class of 2017. Best wishes on your future endeavors. Remember, Reach for the stars and greatness will come to you. Coming in July at the Reorganization meeting of the Board of Education , The Board of Education will be swearing in a new Trustee, Danielle Densch as well as former Trustee Tom Hogan being reappointed to the Board due to the resignation of Annette Rank. Summer Barbecuing is in full swing. Before you light up that barbeque, here are a few safety tips everyone should follow. Always remember, SAFETY FIRST ! Things that you should do during barbecuing : 1. Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your house. Farther is even better. This includes portions attached to your house like carports, garages and porches. Grills should not be used underneath wooden overhangs either, as the fire could flare up into the structure above. This applies to both charcoal and gas grills. 2. Clean your grill regularly. If you allow grease and fat to build up on your grill, they provide more fuel for a fire. Grease is a major source of flare ups. 3. Check for gas leaks. You can make sure no gas is leaking from your gas grill by making a solution of half liquid dish soap and half water and rubbing it on the hoses and connections. Then, turn the gas on (with the grill lid open.) If the soap forms large bubbles, that’s a sign that the hoses have tiny holes or that the connections are not tight enough. 4. Keep decorations away from your grill. Decorations like hanging baskets,
pillows and umbrellas look pretty AND provide fuel for a fire. To make matters worse, today’s decor is mostly made of artificial fibers that burn fast and hot, making this tip even more important. 5. Keep a spray bottle of water handy. That way, if you have a minor flare-up you can spray it with the water to instantly calm it. The bonus of this tip is that water won’t harm your food, so dinner won’t be ruined! 6. Keep a fire extinguisher within a couple steps of your grill. And KNOW HOW TO USE IT. If you are unsure how to use the extinguisher, don’t waste time fiddling with it before calling 911. Firefighters say many fire deaths occur when people try to fight a fire themselves instead of calling for expert help and letting the fire department do its job. Do not’s on barbecuing 7. Turn on the gas while your grill lid is closed. NEVER do this. It causes gas to build up inside your grill, and when you do light it and open it, a fireball can explode in your face. 8. Leave a grill unattended. Fires double in size every minute. Plan ahead so that all of your other food prep chores are done and you can focus on grilling. 9. Overload your grill with food. This applies especially fatty meats. The basic reason for this tip is that if too much fat drips on the flames at once, it can cause a large flare-up that could light nearby things on fire. 10. Use a grill indoors. People often think it will be safe to use a grill, especially a small one, indoors. NOT TRUE. In addition to the fire hazard, grills release carbon monoxide, the deadly colorless, odorless gas. That gas needs to vent in fresh air or it can kill you, your family and pets.

Whether you are contemplating disinheriting your spouse in your current estate plan, or if you ďŹ nd yourself in a position where you are the disinherited spouse, it is very important to consult with an estate planning or estate administration attorney, as the case may be, who can provide you with proper counsel.

Long Island ABATE Annual Veteran’s Appreciation Run to Montauk
Continued from page 1 Photos by Ron Monteleone With the generosity of everyone that came out and supported this run as well as three private donors, Long Island ABATE raised $60,000. All of the money raised will go to local Veterans Organizations on Long Island. There will be a special meeting in October to handout the donations. “If you look at the ABATE patch the first thing you see is “Dedicated to Freedom of the Road”, but if you think about it, it pales in comparison to the overall freedoms we enjoy because of the men and women who are willing to put on the uniform of the Armed Forces of the United States.” says Bill Quinn, Treasurer of Long Island ABATE. “We owe all of our freedoms to them whether it is speech, press, right to assemble, freedom to worship etc. We not only have a duty but we have an obligation to thank these men and women who ensure these freedoms. It is also our responsibility to help support them as they come back into the fabric of civilian life and be sure we are there for them with our time, talent and treasure as their wounds of the flesh and spirit heal.” Bill is also the chairperson of this annual event. Registration began at 9:00am at the Riverhead Elks Lodge located at 1239 East Main Street in Riverhead. After a blessing by Pastor Ski, and the sun holding out, kickstands went up at 11:45am and over 500 motorcyclists headed east towards Montauk. Along the route, the bikes were greeted by a flag line as they crossed over the bridge in Sag Harbor. This bridge is dedicated to Lance Corporal Jordan C. Haerter, a US Marine that was killed in action in 2008.
At Teddy Roosevelt Suffolk County Park a special ceremony took place. The 42nd Infantry Division Band performed. Afterwards, flags were dedicated and handed out to Veterans from different wars and branches. A special recognition was made to The American Legion Riders
this year. After the ceremony everyone rode home with warm hearts because they were part of a spectacular event thanking Long Islands Veterans. If you would like to make a donation to go to the Veterans, visit the web site. please www. longislandabate.org.

By Barbara Guarino Kruk Americans are obsessed with sports. Baseball has always been the favorite choice in our household. My parents, born before the advent of television, would listen to the play-by-play on the radio. The Brooklyn Dodgers were the darlings of the sports world. Here in New York we divide ourselves between the Mets and the Yankees. Why are we so enchanted by the game? What makes people watch their favorite teams so religiously? I have a simple theory. The game represents life. We either make a hit, get on base or we strike out. There are people rooting, or booing, us along our life. We will have slumps and we will be heroes. We will work hard, move from place to place, make friends and lose friends. Those who make it to the top of the game are few. Every youngster dreams of making it to the big leagues; only a select few make it. There have been many broken hearts. The dream of being a major league player is every child’s wish; it transcends race, religion or socio-economic lines. The poorest kid in America can achieve super stardom. The dream is attainable, albeit for a very few. William M. Kelleher was a true Yankee fan. He loved the game, the players and watched every game. He grew up in an era when the players were American heroes. Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle were idols of the American public. They represented everything that was good about this country. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. These were the people who taught us tenacity, team spirit and values. William was a generous man. According to his girls, when the doorbell rang, he never got up to see who was at the door; he would just call out to them to come on in. His door was always open and all were welcomed to come in. He was a simple man with a big heart.
