 Sunderman Kicks Off Campaign For SC Legislature’s Third District  

Brookhaven Town Councilman Dan Panico and his colleagues on the town board recently honored Manorville Volunteer Fireﬁghter Matthew Thomas for his part in saving the life of a man who was in cardiac arrest in a restaurant in Ireland, where Mr. Thomas was vacationing this past April. He immediately began administering CPR and a deﬁbrillator, before local emergency services arrived.

William Floyd High School Business Academy student Lexi Willets placed ﬁrst in the Client Services category at the New York State Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competition held this past April. This victory qualiﬁed Lexi, a senior, for the FBLA National Competition in Anaheim, CA, in late June, in which she will face off against the best FBLA students in the nation.

On May 31, Councilman Neil Foley visited Patchogue-Medford High School to honor the Students of the Month for May and June.             

For the second consecutive year, Patrick Merschoff, owner of M & L Auto Services in Mastic Beach and a member of the William Floyd High School Industrial Advisory Board, presented “Tools of the Trade” gift sets to two William Floyd Automotive Technology Academy students, for their efforts in maintaining stellar grades and attendance during the two-year automotive technology program. The students, Josh Fredricks and Matt Hoffman, plan on pursuing careers in the automotive technology industry after graduation.

     

Community Viewpoint Disgrace and Dishonor

Dear Editor:

William Floyd, who was one of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence once lived at the William Floyd Estates in Mastic Beach, along with eight generations of the family thoughout the years. Nowadays, the property is in the care of Fire Island National Seashore. For the past six months, the William Floyd Estates has been under property renovations which is funded by the federal government. A newly paved parking lot and a new heating system installed at the home, which has not yet been operating during the construction. What is appalling not only to me but to any visitor to the property during the Memorial Day weekend and thoughout the year, is the placement of the construction dumpster and port-a-potty. This is disrespectful to the American Flag that is flying above in honor of America and those who fought and died fighting for our freedoms. On Memorial Day, during a flag ceremony flanked by retired and current military personnel was this scene of such placement of the dumpster and port-apotty. The company who has the contract to complete these renovations should lose their contract to finish these repairs for the disrespectful placement of the dumpster and port-a-potty. The property is large enough that these items could have been placed on the other side of the property away from the flagpole. Visitors and park workers are ashamed and repulsed by such dishonor by the contractor awarded to complete renovations on the William Floyd Estate.

On Saturday June 3, Supervisor Ed Romaine attended the 6th Annual Tri-Hamlet Community Day celebration at the Manor of Saint George in Shirley. The event offered tours to some of the most historic sites throughout the Mastic, Mastic Beach, and Shirley communities. They included the Manor of St. George, the location of the “Battle of Fort St. George” during the Revolutionary War; the William Floyd Estate, birthplace of William Floyd, signer of the Declaration of Independence; tours of the Rita Rech Museum of William Floyd School District History and the Nathaniel Woodhull Cemetery. It also featured live music, and free hot dogs and soda provided by the Mastic Beach Property Owners Association. Supervisor Romaine’s visit to the Manor of St. George featured Revolutionary War Reenactment groups that showcased the uniforms and weaponry of revolutionary war soldiers, and provided demonstrations on the ﬁring of muskets and cannons.

Reading One Thousand Books Before Kindergarten Helps Kids Succeeds

         

   Developing literacy skills begins

and continues through the toddler and preschool years. The best  way to be sure that your child has the    to learn to read once they skills needed  enter kindergarten is to have someone  read aloud to them. Children who  are read to from an early age start    school with stronger listening skills,  better vocabularies and a host of other  benefits.   One thousand books may sound  like an awful lot, but if you read only      one bedtime story every night for three you will have read 1095 stories!   years Read books a week for two years    10  and you will have read 1040! If you   read just three books every day for a   year you will have read 1095 books!  By making reading aloud to your child  a priority, you are spending quality time together and enriching their learning skills. Most children   love and cherish bedtime story time, and even toddlers enjoy hearing your voice and looking at the pictures and words in books long before they are ready  to  read on their own.      How  to  sign up?   by  Stop the Library Children’s Desk with your library card.   What do you get to keep track of your books?  When you sign up, you will receive a 1KB4K journal and a free book for your  child to keep.   After each 100 books, your child gets a sticker. When you have read 500 books,  your child will receive a 1KB4K T-shirt and another free book. When you complete  1000 books, your child will receive a third book, a completion certificate and a      special prize!  Who can join?  with preschool children, birth through age 5. You may register each child Families   separately, or together.      How   does the program work?  Sign   up your child and start reading. Record each book read in your special  1KB4K journal. Any book read to your child counts; it doesn’t matter if it is a library  book, one you own, or one you read in a doctor’s office or at grandma’s house. If your     child attends a library storytime, count those books, too! After each 100 books, get new journal pages either by printing them off the library website or by stopping by       the Children’s Desk to get more pages.  What does the research say? “Home literacy” or engaging in language and reading at home before school,    readiness. I-TRI Promoting Positive Self-Esteem

      

I-tri founder and executive director, Theresa Roden said, “The purpose is an empowerment program for middle school girls.” The Hamptons Youth Triathlon takes place in Sag Harbor on July 13 at 5 PM. The event features a 300 yard open water swim, 7 mile bike ride and 1 ½ mile run. Started 7 years ago with 8 girls at the Spring School in East Hampton this year’s program has grown to 6 different schools and has over 130 girls participating. The program trains mind, body, spirit; while the girls meet in groups meet to promote self-esteem and positive body awareness After school training includes running and biking. The program provides paid professional trainers and all services are free of charge. The program survives on sponsorship and fundraising. They are also sponsoring a Turbo Tri Race that is open to adults on June 17. Stony Brook Hosts Community EMS Agencies Award Dinner

Stony Brook Medicine    hosted its third annual   EMS (Emergency Medical   Service) Awards Dinner on  

May 24 at Three Village Inn in Stony Brook. The event, attended by nearly   100 EMS workers, cel ebrates the achievements     of community EMS work ers whose quick thinking  and fast action   helps Stony Brook Medicine shorten   critical “door-to-needle”  time, which helps saves lives every day. IV tPA administration in the quickest time possible is the focus of The Joint Com mission, New York State Department of Health and American Heart/Stroke Association    to overwhelming evidence that IV tPA saves brain. A total of 1.9 million neurons are   due   lost every minute the brain is without oxygen. While transporting an individual suspected of having an ischemic stroke to Stony     Brook University Hospital, EMS workers carefully monitor vital signs, obtain and document other key information about the individual and pre-notify Stony Brook with an  estimated arrival time so that the Stony Brook team is at the door the moment the EMS  vehicle arrives  and valuable minutes are saved. Several local EMS agencies were recognized for their roles in helping Stony Brook achieve IV tPA door-to-needle times in 60 minutes or less. They are Centereach Fire   Department, Ronkonkoma Fire Department, Setauket Fire Department, Smithtown Fire         Department, St. James Fire Department and Stony Brook Fire Department.       Seven EMS agencies were also recognized for their roles in helping Stony Brook  achieve IV tPA in 45 minutes or less. LGBT Parenting

At some point you will find it appropriate to talk to your child about being gay, about having two parents of the same sex (or having only one parent), about how he or she came into the world, and about how some folks react to it. Most LGBT couples and single parents find that their children gradually pick up pieces of this as they grow up. Some LGBT parents worry about their children growing up to be gay. Some parents do not want their children to be gay because they believe that it is a difficult life to lead because of discrimination and misunderstanding by the general public. Other parents are comfortable with the notion of their children being gay. Most researchers and experts believe that being gay is not a choice and has little to do with environment. You are either gay or you are not! Some folks who are gay suppress it and lead hetero-sexual lives, but in general, being gay is not a choice. Worrying that you are going to make your child gay is a concern you should not have. Children need loving families, with parents who love freely, are comfortable with their own sexuality and give their children support, understanding and the right to make their own choices. ROLE MODELS – Another concern for many LGBT parents is that their children will not have close role models from both sexes. It is possible to get too hung up on the role model concept. The best role models are parents regardless of their sex. Your sex has nothing to do with teaching your child to be kind, respectful, fair, thoughtful, fun, caring, energetic, or any other quality you deem important. As an attorney, father, little league coach, volunteer, and long standing community member, Mr. Foster has established himself as a well-respected contributor to his community. Mr. Foster has served as the Center Moriches Board of Education President for the last three years. During this time, Mr. Foster has led the development of Board of Education goals that promote continued collaboration with staff, ﬁscal responsibility, system accountability, and programmatic growth that leads to greater student achievements and opportunities. He is described as a board member that is committed to every role that the Board of Education plays in the advancement and maintenance of a district. He is viewed as a person whose passion is only matched by his intellect and his intellect is realized through the diligence that he commits to every task. Those in his community have deﬁned him as a visionary whose mission it is to propel his community to greater heights by increasing the opportunities available. The Suﬀolk County Police Department is advising motorists of road closures on William Floyd Parkway in Shirley next weekend.

William Floyd Parkway will be closed between Montauk Highway and Northern Boulevard between Friday, May 12 at 9 p.m. through Monday, May 15 at approximately 5 a.m. due to the work on the Long Island Rail Road crossing. Both eastbound and westbound Route 27 exits to go southbound on William Floyd will be closed. Motorists are advised to expect heavy traffic in the area and use the following alternate routes: From the West Eastbound Montauk Highway traffic should turn right onto Smith Road. Motorists may make a left turn onto Northern Boulevard to travel to William Floyd Parkway or may continue south on Smith Road. Eastbound Sunrise Highway motorists should take exit 57 South (Horseblock Road) to Montauk Highway, turn left onto Montauk Highway and follow the above directions. From the East Westbound Sunrise Highway traffic may use Exit





58 North to the North Service Road: • Continue west to Yaphank Avenue south to Montauk Highway, make a left onto eastbound Montauk Highway to Smith Road, or • Make a right onto North Service Road to Titmus Drive south and turn left on Montauk Highway to Mastic Road south, or • Make a right onto North Service Road and continue to Barnes Road south to Montauk Highway west to Mastic Road South. Westbound Montauk Highway traﬃc may utilize southbound Mastic Road to points south. To proceed north from south of the Long Island Rail Road Tracks Motorists should use Smith Road or Mastic Road to get to areas north of the road closure.
