South Fork Commuter Connection Service to Resume September 7th
For customers traveling within Zone 14 (Westhampton, Hampton Bays, Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Amagansett, Montauk) the LIRR fare is $3.25 each way. Riders can purchase their LIRR tickets via the following methods: vending machines at stations, via the MTA eTix app, and via mail. Riders can also purchase daily, weekly and monthly passes. For Speonk customers, in order to take advantage of the $3.25 fare, they must purchase a special SFCC ticket from a Full-Service Ticket Machine at Speonk, Westhampton, Hampton Bays or Southampton. The ticket can be found under the “Deals & Getaways”
Brookhaven Town Clerk Donna Lent takes time to recognize August 31 as International Overdose Awareness Day. Addiction has swept through this country claiming many lives and leaving countless others at its mercy. The ripple effect is felt by their families, friends, first responders and medical personnel. “To those who have overdosed or lost someone who has, my heart goes out to you,” Town Clerk Lent said, “It is essential that we, as a society, invest the necessary resources and break the
stigma through education.” South Country Ambulance Chief Gregory C. The SFCC is a coordinated rail and bus system created in 2019 to operate during peak commuter hours, in order to provide workers with a public transportation option. This service will operate Monday through Friday, except for summer Fridays and holidays. The SFCC provides commuters with two “morning rush” eastbound trains and two “afternoon rush” westbound trains, stopping in Speonk, Westhampton, Hampton Bays, Southampton, Bridgehampton, East
Hampton, Amagansett, and Montauk. “Last mile” shuttle services are included as part of the service to facilitate the commute and will bring riders to the Villages, hamlets and employment centers. Late afternoon bus and train services will return riders to their stations of origin.

Suffolk County 6th District Legislator Sarah Anker Seeks Reelection By Barbara LaMonica
Suffolk County 6th District Legislator Sarah Anker is running for another two~year term in the November elections. She will appear on the Democrat and Working Family Party lines of the ballot. This is Anker’s seventh and final campaign for election to the seat due to term limits instituted last year in accordance with a voter referendum. Anker was first elected to the County Legislature in November 2011 during a special election against Republican candidate Martin Haley to fill the unexpired term of Republican incumbent, Dan Losquadro, who was elected to the New York State Assembly, and now serves as Brookhaven Town Superintendent of Highways. The 6th Legislative seat has since remained in Democrat control with Anker winning consecutive terms since Losquadro vacated the seat. During an interview with Anker last week, the Legislator discussed issues facing the county, why she is seeking reelection, her record, and what she has laid out on the docket if she wins reelection. Her first reason for serving in the County Legislature, Anker said, is to represent her constituents. “My goal every single day, 24-7, is to help people. I am a voice so my constituents can be heard,” Anker said. “I listen to their concerns, then act on their behalf.”
Some of those concerns are what promoted Anker to pen a letter to Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul addressing what she calls three major issues: fixing potholes on state roads, protecting Long Island’s waters, and bail reform. “Suffolk County’s police department, law enforcement and sheriff’s department do a good job cracking down on crime, but,” Anker said, “state legislation on bail reform has to be changed so judges could be given back the power to have more discretion on (sentencing) individuals that committed crimes, and the current state of bail reform doesn’t give judges the ability to steer the person in the right direction.” Anker’s record reflects the county’s plight for environmental conservation and she touts her ability to work with various levels of government to accomplish goals and tackle issues. “I’m a champion for land preservation and protecting the environment, and I have the ability to accomplish multiple goals working with Intergovernmental agencies, “ Anker said. “In the time I’ve been a Legislator, I’ve worked to purchase 2,500 acres of open space and acquisition of farmland preservation, “ said Anker, who founded the Community Health & Environment Coalition 20 years ago to address cancer rates. “The environment is related to health, and there is so much work to be done like stopping the dredging in Long Island Sound and in our oceans.”
Anther of Anker’s environmental concerns centers around dredging. “The DEC allows sand mining companies to dredge 150 feet into our sole source aquifer at the expense of contaminating

our groundwater,” Anker said. “I recognize the importance that we need sand, but,” she cautioned, “hydrologists warn that dredging opens the aquifer up to contamination in the Pine Barrens Compatible Growth area.” From a fiscal standpoint, Anker says she is a fiscal conservative Democrat. “When I first came into office, the county had a $500 million operating deficit, and while we worked to overcome fiscal challenges, there’s still more we are doing. We need to start saving money and hold the line on taxes,
and we need to always be looking for other revenue sources.”
She also serves on 30 committees, panels and task forces.
Anker said she did not vote for fee hikes like the alarm and mortgage fees. “So fiscally, we’re heading in the right direction. We’ve taken measures to reduce the tax burden, and we can always do more.” Anker said she is supportive of the unions, the county’s employees, and emphasized she does not support defunding the police.
Asked what makes her the better candidate in the race for election to the 6th LD, Anker stated: “Experience and securing our future with proven leadership, and having a vision to see the end result on how to get to your goal. I’m very involved with projects and I have the experience and ability to network with so many people and also with representatives from all levels of government.” Anker added. “I understand the reality of a situation, I use common sense, and what’s important to me is that I see multiple perspectives.”
Public safety is high on Anker’s pyramid of priorities. She worked to develop the 10 mile long North Shore Rails to Trails project spanning the LIPA right of way from Mount Sinai to Wading River to increase public and pedestrian safety, enhance visibility to local shops and complement parks. Presently a work in progress, Anker said the project is expected to be completed by the end of Fall 2021. Working in conjunction with Suffolk County Police Department, she was instrumental in launching the School Active Violence Emergency Hotline where participating school districts are equipped with the technology to alert law enforcement’s 911 Call Center in the event of an emergency. Anker chairs the county’s Addiction Prevention & Support Advocacy Panel, comprised of a cross representation of 30 members to address the treatment, education and rehabilitation of addiction, and works with the courts to address addiction and mental health.
As she continues her campaign towards November, Anker said her priorities will focus on advocacy for her constituents, including senior citizens, veterans, scouting groups and local businesses. “It’s very important that I work with civic associations that are the heart of our communities,” Anker said. At press time, Anker received the endorsement of the Long Island Federation of Labor and a multitude of law enforcement agencies including Suffolk County PBA, Suffolk County Detectives Investigators PBA, Suffolk County Corrections Officers Association, Suffolk County Superior Officers Association, Suffolk County Deputy Sheriff’s PBA, Suffolk County Detectives Association and Suffolk County Police Conference.
Brendan Sweeney Makes Run for 6th LD Seat Challenging Incumbent Sarah Anker By Barbara LaMonica
Brendan R. Sweeney is making his first run for election to Suffolk County’s 6th Legislative seat. He will appear on the Republican line of the ballot. He is challenging incumbent, Sarah Anker. Sweeney is a Citizen’s Advocate for the Supervisor’s Office of the Town of Brookhaven. He was appointed to this position in 2017 where he served until 2020. With the advent of COVID, Sweeney was subsequently reassigned to work between the Law and Building Departments where he remained, until he was reassigned back to the post of Citizen’s Advocate in the Office of the Supervisor in May of 2021. Asked why he chose the 6th Legislative District to seek election to, Sweeney, a lifelong resident replied, “There is no place I’d rather live than here on Long Island. This Island is truly unique and a great place to live, work and raise a family.” Sweeney reported that his main priority if he wins the
election, is to focus on residents. “My biggest priority is ensuring that the residents have the best quality of life that I can work to provide them. It is my hope that generations to come can experience the great life that I was fortunate to have growing up here.”

issues include eliminating duplicative functions of employees, and reassigning those employees to other positions in different departments where needed,
within civil service regulations. “There were certain departments that were undermanned since the Levy days, and we have to start staffing those departments,” Sweeney said. “For the long-term,” Sweeney said, “I would focus on rooting out waste and eliminating potentially unnecessary supplies that were ordered.” Like his opponent, Sweeney supports dialing back state legislation on bail reform. “The State Legislature overstepped its bounds and what we need to be doing is empowering our cops, not depowering them. As a county legislator I would be working with others to encourage the New York State Legislature to return bail reform back to what we had in 2019,” Sweeney said. Offering why he is the better candidate to serve the county and constituents of the 6th Legislative District, Sweeney stated, “My opponent is seeking her final term in the legislature. I thank her for the years of service that she has given constituents
of the 6th Legislative District.” Sweeney continued, “It is my intention to work collaboratively with the Town of Brookhaven on projects to preserve the quality of life that residents of the 6th Legislative District deserve. I am proud of my work in the county, state, and town that gives me a unique expertise in ensuring communication that many residents feel is lacking between different levels of government.” Anker, however, counters her challenger in that her experience, coupled with her longevity in office, have enabled her to forge intergovernmental relationships which benefit constituents of the 6th LD and countywide. Asked about his confidence level in winning this election, Sweeney told South Shore Press: “Like all candidates for public office, I am confident that I will win but always run like you’re losing. That way,” Sweeney said, “you show your supporters and the residents of your district that you will not stop fighting for them.”

South Fork Wind to Build the FirstEver American-Made Offshore Wind Substation, Creating Jobs Across Three U.S. States
Offshore wind substation will be built at Kiewit’s Texas facility; New York union workers will support installation off Long Island coast In a major milestone for the growth of the U.S. offshore wind supply chain, offshore wind joint development partners Ørsted and Eversource announced today the commencement of the first American-built offshore wind substation, which will be deployed at the developers’ South Fork Wind project serving New York’s Long Island. Ørsted and Eversource have selected Kiewit Offshore Services, Ltd. (Kiewit), the largest offshore fabricator in the U.S., to design and build the substation for the 132-megawatt South Fork Wind project – New York’s first offshore wind farm. The 1,500-ton, 60-foot-tall substation will be built at Kiewit’s facility in Ingleside, Texas, near Corpus Christi. More than 350 workers across three states will support this South Fork Wind structure. The fabrication workers in Ingleside will be supported by teams in Houston and Kansas. In addition, hundreds of union workers in the Northeast will support the South Fork Wind project and additional initiatives in the region.
In selecting Kiewit, Ørsted, along with Eversource, continues to lead in building the U.S. offshore wind supply chain and is the first U.S. offshore wind developer to select an American contractor to fabricate a wind farm’s offshore substation. “We’re helping to build a new U.S. manufacturing industry that will create thousands of good-paying jobs not just in the Northeast but in communities across the United States,” said David Hardy, Chief Executive Officer of Ørsted Offshore North America. “We’re proud to partner with Kiewit to deliver the first American-made offshore wind substation. This initiative is part of our commitment to deliver for our
long-term partners, combining international experience with local expertise in communities across the country.” “Achieving our nation’s clean energy goals will be largely dependent on U.S.-based companies like Kiewit, and we are excited to partner with them to deliver the first U.S.-made offshore wind substation,” Joe Nolan, Chief Executive Officer and President of Eversource Energy. “Our partnership with Kiewit marks another significant milestone for the U.S. offshore wind industry and signals the growth of the next great maritime industry throughout the country. We are committed to creating a clean energy future and fostering opportunities for all Americans.”
Offshore wind substations are critical components of utility-scale offshore wind farms. Substations collect the power produced by wind turbines and connect the clean “The production of clean energy is at a pivotal stage in the U.S., and offshore wind, such as the South Fork Wind project, plays a very important role,” said Paul Geldmeier, who leads Kiewit’s offshore wind power work as Executive Vice President, Kiewit Energy. “We are proud to contribute our engineering and construction expertise to this industry-first project.” Kiewit expects to begin construction on the substation in November and complete the work by Spring 2023, before transiting the substation across the Gulf of Mexico and up the East Coast for installation at the South Fork Wind site in the summer of 2023. South Fork Wind continues to advance steadily through the federal permitting process, with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management issuing the project’s final Environmental Impact Statement on August 16. South Fork Wind remains on-track to be fully permitted in early 2022, with construction activities ramping up soon after and the project producing clean energy by the end of 2023.
Don’t Fall Victim to Needless Solicitation Several years ago, the Suffolk County Clerk’s Office informed the public about a variety of companies offering to sell certified copies of deeds to homeowners at a cost of up to 1,200% more than what a person would pay to receive the same copy through the Clerk’s Office.

Because of the publicity, State law was enacted regulating the practice of companies that offer to sell you a copy of your deed. The law requires exact language to ensure that consumers are able to make informed decisions regarding the purchase of
certified copies of property deeds that clearly delineates the fact that such copies are readily available for a much smaller fee from your County Clerk’s Office. However, these record retrieval services companies continue to seek new customers and often canvass entire neighborhoods with solicitations offering to sell homeowners a certified copy of the deed to their home for a significantly higher cost than is available from our Office. Due to these mailings, a good number of people have contacted my Office to question the
legitimacy of these letters. Some of the most common questions can be summed up in the following statements; first, there is no general sense of urgency to have a copy of your deed on hand at all times. Second, if you should ever need a certified copy of your deed, my office stands ready to provide you with a certified copy for a small fee that is usually five dollars. Mastic Beach Fire Department Joins Forces with Neighboring Departments
Local Fire Departments join forces to create Marine Incident Response Team When an emergency happens on the water, time is of the essence; a sinking boat, a swimmer in distress, a boating accident, seconds can make all the difference. In the first of its kind in Suffolk County, five local fire departments; Mastic Beach FD, Mastic FD, Center Moriches FD, East Moriches FD and Eastport Fire Department have joined forces to create a Marine Incident Response Team. The multi-agency response team is comprised of a special group of firefighters trained to respond to water-based emergencies. The response area covers from the Smithpoint Bridge in Mastic Beach to the Speonk River in
Eastport. This includes all creeks, rivers, and coves as well as the Moriches Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean west to the Fire Island National Seashore. Each department has specialized equipment to provide a rapid response to a variety of waterbased incidents including citizens or vessels in distress, search and rescue, marine firefighting, and EMS assistance on the water. The team’s resources include rescue swimmers, SCUBA divers, fire boats, jet skis, a hovercraft and numerous shallow water rescue boats. Our local fire departments have a long-standing history of working together with the men and women of U.S. Coast Guard Station East Moriches. This new marine response team will
strengthen its alliance and improve its effectiveness with the Coast Guard while working together on the water. The Marine Incident Response Team is dispatched by Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services. FRES activates all five departments simultaneously, eliminating any delay in the team’s response to water rescue incidents. Once activated the team operates under a unified command and works together to provide efficient, and effective resources to any incident on our local waterways. Thanks to the support of these fire departments and their dedicated volunteers the Marine Incident Response Team is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to respond and provide emergency assistance at a moment’s notice.
Losquadro and LaValle Announce Paving of Hawkins Road in Centereach Brookhaven Town Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro and Councilman Kevin LaValle have announced the completion of two paving projects in Centereach and Selden. In the first project, heavilytraveled Hawkins Road was resurfaced from Magnolia Drive in Selden to Wireless Road in Centereach. Prior to paving, crews inspected drains and made concrete improvements, including replacing damaged concrete sidewalks, curbing and aprons. Crews removed and replaced 5,260 linear feet of concrete curb, 7,552 square feet of concrete sidewalk, 3,675 square feet of ADA-compliant handicap ramps, and 7,514 square feet of concrete aprons, at a cost of $506,900. The total cost for this project was approximately $1.1 million. Additionally, in another paving project, crews resurfaced three nearby residential roadways: Capri Road, Impala Drive and Lark Drive in Centereach. The total cost for this project was $113,557.

Superintendent Losquadro said, “Hawkins Road is so heavilytraversed and, as such, was in great need of resurfacing. It had been on our radar for some time and I am very grateful we were able to include its resurfacing in our 2021 paving season.” Councilmember LaValle said, “The Town’s investment in
infrastructure improvements makes our roads safer for motorists, bicycle riders and pedestrians. I thank Superintendent Losquadro and the men and women of the Highway Department for the important work they do all year round for the residents in Council District 3 and throughout the Town.”
Councilman Dan Panico and County Legislator Jim Mazarella were onhand when the Town of Brookhaven demolished a vacant and abandoned “zombie house” at 108 Poospatuck Lane in Mastic Beach. The long-abandoned house was the source of resident complaints leading to numerous Town of Brookhaven housing code violations. There were also a number of abandoned vehicles on the property that were towed away by the Town. The property was seized by Suffolk County as a property tax forfeiture, transferred to the Town for demolition and now it will
be preserved as open space. Councilman Dan Panico said, “Block by block, we are removing the blight and decay throughout Brookhaven Town, improving the quality of life and raising property values. It will be a great day when we can declare that there are no more demolitions to occur. Girl Scout Earns Gold Award with Sensory Lending Collection
The Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library has a Girl Scout to thank for its newest collection. Olivia Raineri, a member of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, Troop 2081, created the Sensory Lending Collection to earn her the Gold Award, Girl Scouts’ highest honor. To receive it, a Girl Scout must work a minimum of 80 hours on a project that meets a need in her community. The Sensory Lending Collection will offer resources that provide sensory stimulation, including toys, games, educational tools, and comfort objects, for children and adults with disabilities. There are many items on the market for people who have autism, ADHD, and other sensory-processing disorders as well as for individuals who are recovering from strokes and other brain injuries. However, as Olivia discovered, families often cannot afford the equipment they
need. “In creating a Sensory Lending Collection in my community,” she said, “I plan to provide educators, families, and caregivers of people with disabilities an opportunity to have access to therapeutic items. They will be able to learn about and try these items before buying them.” Building the Sensory Lending Collection was truly a community effort. Olivia’s friends and family purchased products for the collection through an online registry. The owner of a nearby sewing studio donated space and supplies so that Olivia could create “eye spy sensory bags,” pellet-filled pouches that users manipulate to make small, colorful trinkets appear in front of a clear plastic window. From a young age, Olivia knew that she wanted to center her life around helping others. At six years old, she made sandwiches for the needy. When she was in the
seventh grade, she earned the Girl Scout Silver Award by facilitating donations of smart televisions and toys for the playroom at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson. Recently, Olivia assembled hundreds of packages of feminine-care products for homeless women. She graduated from William Floyd High School this year and is pursuing a bachelor of science in nursing at the University of Scranton. Olivia is the granddaughter of Maris Raineri, a former member of the library’s Board of Trustees and a retired WFHS employee. “We are so proud of Olivia and the work she’s done,” remarked Joseph Maiorana, president of the Board of Trustees. “Caring and engaged young people like Olivia are making our community and our world a place where everyone can feel welcome.” Kerri Rosalia, library director, echoed his sentiment: “This collection will be invaluable as
we pursue our mission to provide personalized learning with a caring attitude to the entire population of the William Floyd School District.
We look forward to adding to the Sensory Lending Collection and continuing the vital work that Olivia has started.”

College Football is Predictable

BY TOM BARTON College football season is upon us and while we are all anxious to watch what should be another great season, let’s also not kid ourselves and buy into the “anyone can win” narrative. College football is one of the most fun sports to watch and be a part of. From the bands, to the cheerleaders, to the crowds, and mascots, the college game brings an excitement that pro sports simply don’t match. But, with all that upside there is downside, and that downside is there are only a handful of teams that can actually win the championship each year. This season Coastal Carolina has a real shot to go undefeated. This is a team that lost just one game last season and they
are returning 20 of their 22 starters. Cincinnati also might go unbeaten as they look stacked and have a favorable schedule. Neither of these teams, though, have a chance at a National Championship. That’s a sad statement for the NCAA. This is nothing new as Boise State was in that position for years. They owned the regular season, won Bowl games and never sniffed a national title. Central Florida has a banner hanging in their stadium because they went unbeaten and declared themselves national champs, but they had to because no one at the NCAA would recognize them as winners. Which brings us to the power

5. And no, I don’t mean the power 5 conferences. I mean the power 5 schools who can win a title this year. Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma, Georgia and Ohio St. That’s it. That’s the list. Each one of these schools has odds set by the line makers as 7 to 1 or lower to win the Natty this season. The next closest team is Texas A&M, who come in at a downright longshot with 33-1 odds. One of these goliaths might fall, heck maybe even two go down, but it won’t matter. The rules are not the same for the big boys as they are for everyone else. One of these 5 teams will win the national championship. It won’t take away from the pomp and circumstance that is the college
football season, but come Bowl time it will seem like Groundhogs

The hijacking and crashing of four U.S. jetliners on September 11, 2001, brought instant attention to Afghanistan. The plot had been hatched by al-Quaeda, and some of the 19 hijackers trained in Afghanistan. In the aftermath of the attacks, the administration of President George W. Bush coalesced around a strategy of first ousting the Taliban from Afghanistan and dismantling alQaeda, though others contemplated actions in Iraq, including plans for the toppling of Saddam Hussein. Bush demanded that Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar “deliver all the leaders of al-Qaeda who hid in his land to the United States authorities,” and when Omar refused, U.S. officials began implementing a plan for war. The campaign in Afghanistan started covertly on September 26,
with a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) team know as Jawbreakers arriving in the country and, working with anti-Taliban allies hoping they could avoid deploying a large force in Afghanistan. The CIA team was soon joined by U.S. and British forces. They helped coordinate targeting for the air campaign, which began October 7, 2001 with both the U.S. and British war planes pounding Taliban targets. The Unites States consistently represented the largest foreign force in Afghanistan, and it bore the heaviest losses. By spring 2010 more than 1,000 U .S. troops had been killed, while the British suffered some 300 deaths and the Canadians some 150. Afghanistan War Part I have served in Afghanistan and Iraq since 9/11. It is also the most different and difficult war in our history. First and most important, the enemy is not dressed in a uniform and there is no way to differentiate them from the civilian population. What makes this even harder is the fact that the enemy includes women and children, using suicide bombs tied to their bodies or in cars and wagons. They also place land mines on many of the roads our troops have to travel on. Thus, most of the deaths and wounds our troops encounter are not from gun shots like previous wars, but from these bombs. Thousands of our troops are seriously injured by the bombs with many losing limbs and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Our troops are also forced to shoot at civilians that they believe to be the enemy causing then to suffer a major problem of Moral Injury. There is no question that having
to shoot a woman or child causes suffering to the shooter. Just think how you would feel if forced to shoot a woman or child. This may explain why at the present time we
are losing more troops to suicide than those lost in the war. This problem is also happening with our veterans and both need help from their communities and clergy.
