“While safes and safety deposit boxes are among the best places to store your most sensitive documents, I want to assure all Suffolk County residents that a permanent copy of all documents recorded in our Office, i.e. deeds, mortgages, powers of attorney, etc., are readily available, should an unfortunate disaster strike,” commented Pascale. By digitally scanning and retaining land records, digital surrogates are utilized in place of the actual hard copies to preserve land transactions while also providing for an efficient and effective safeguard of the land records of Suffolk County. “Although traditional paper mediums are increasingly susceptible to disaster, we utilize state-of-the-art computer storage systems to hold digital images of these paper mediums to provide an added layer of security in the protection of the public record,” concluded Pascale.

Standing along Suffolk’s iconic oceanfront, officials and environmentally minded community members launched a new initiative intended to combat litter along portions of our coastline. Unveiled at Smith Point County Park was the first cleanup station to be installed through a pilot program championed by Deputy Presiding Officer Kara Hahn earlier this year that places beach clean-up baskets at nine county parks across Suffolk. The program is intended to give parks patrons an opportunity to combat beach pollution by providing carriable baskets for litter collection. Volunteers who participate are asked to take a basket, collect debris and then return the baskets and litter to the cleanup station where trash receptacles are located for proper disposal. Suffolk County entered into an agreement with Remsenburg, New York-based nonprofit RELIC

Hahn, sponsor of legislation authoring the County’s agreement with RELIC Sustainability. “Suffolk County’s shoreline is its welcome mat and our partnership with RELIC will make these beaches even more alluring.” Aiden Kravitz, co-founder of RELIC Sustainability said, “With more and more plastic trash washing up on our shorelines, we couldn’t be more excited to be taking action against coastal pollution with Suffolk County and Sunrise Wind. We are determined to continue building and implementing clean up stations that integrate stakeholders from the community, government, and business as part of a collective environmental solution. By working together, we can keep our coastlines clean and protected as we enter a time period hallmarked by pollution and debris.” According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, “billions of pounds of trash and other pollutants enter the ocean each year” with researchers who study pollution on Australian atoll islands estimating “that about 524,000 pounds, or 238 metric tons, of plastic washed up on beaches that are exposed to ocean currents, wind and waves.” It is believed 80 percent of all aquatic waste is comprised of single use plastics. With more than 980 miles of coastline, Suffolk County is especially impacted by beach litter that is either left behind by visitors or washed ashore. To combat this issue locally, Suffolk has prohibited the use of single use plastic straws and stirrers, microbeads in personal care items and polystyrene

Several years ago, the Suffolk County Clerk’s Office informed the public about a variety of companies offering to sell certified copies of deeds to homeowners at a cost of up to 1,200% more than what a person would pay to receive the same copy through the Clerk’s Office. Because of the publicity, State law

enacted regulating the practice of companies that offer to sell you a copy of your deed. The law requires exact language to ensure that consumers are able to make informed decisions regarding the purchase of certified copies of property deeds that clearly delineates the fact that such copies are readily available for a much smaller fee from your County Clerk’s Office. However, these record retrieval services companies continue to seek new customers and often canvass entire neighborhoods with solicitations offering to sell homeowners a certified copy of the deed to their home for a significantly higher cost then is available from our Office.
Due to these mailings, a good number of people have contacted my Office to question the legitimacy of these letters. Some of the most common questions can be summed up in the following statements; first, there is no general sense of urgency to have a copy of your deed on hand at all times. Second, if you should ever need a certified copy of your deed, my office stands ready to provide you with a certified copy for a small fee that is usually five dollars. Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon, Jr. Seeks 2nd Term Discusses 1st Term Accomplishments/ Maps Out Agenda if Re-elected By Barbara LaMonica
As Suffolk County Sheriff, Dr. Errol D. Toulon, Jr. ushers his inaugural four year term to a close, he is seeking election to a second term. During a telephone interview with Toulon last week, Suffolk County’s highest-ranking law enforcement official recounted some of the accomplishments during his first term, and an aggressive agenda he plans to carry forward if he wins re-election to a second four-year term. First elected November of 2017 and taking the helm as Sheriff on January 1, 2018, Toulon’s first years as Sheriff were productive. Prior to serving as Suffolk County Sheriff, Toulon worked 22 of the 25 years on Riker’s Island as deputy commissioner of operations. But it’s the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office where Toulon says he makes the bigger difference. “As Sheriff, I am able to have more of an impact in the community I live in,” Toulon said. “I think I’ve done the best job where I work 24 hours a day seven days a week,” Toulon adds, underscoring that he is thankful for the support of his wife that enables him to dedicate and focus his efforts to the commanding responsibilities of the office. Toulon’s record of accomplishments early during his tenure as Sheriff includes restructuring of the Intelligence Bureau, and implementing new strategies in the war against gang violence, human trafficking, and opioid crisis and violent crimes. Toulon’s office launched the nation’s first jailbased Human Trafficking Initiative which assesses all county inmates for signs of victimization and services and a community service continuum. Toulon said traffickers are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Armed with more than three decades of criminal justice and law enforcement experience, Toulon said moving forward that he vows to continue enforcing laws, and serving and protecting Suffolk County’s 1.5 million residents, with emphasis on public safety, and raising the bar of accountability of the staff of the Sheriff’s Office, by providing them with enhanced training and supervision, while maintaining the highest standards. “We are planning for increased training for our staff, and holding the dedicated men and women of the Sheriff’s Office accountable by best practices and national standards,” Toulon said. Detailing some of the training, Toulon noted a three-day block of training for every deputy sheriff and corrections officer, as well as the creation of a one-week

A five-day crisis intervention training initiative is designed to engage officers with mental health and first aid training, and to focus on intervention for persons with, for example, potential mental health problems. Toulon acknowledges there has been an increase in shootings in Suffolk County over the last few months, and while Suffolk is not isolated, the Sheriff said his staff is working closely with the District Attorney’s Office and Suffolk County Police Department to identify potential issues. “With these three departments working together, there are no egos, and we all work collaboratively,” Toulon said. “Our goal is to go after the bad people, and the victims need to be heard.”

Grand Opening The Rocky Point Sound Beach Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the grand opening of Long Island Lending a Helping Hand, Inc on Monday. Guests who attended included Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio, Councilwoman Jane Bonner, Chamber President Gary Pollakusky and the RPSB Chamber board, the Girl Scouts, volunteers, local media and residents. Long Island Lending a Helping Hand is a food pantry and resource center that helps provide assistance for families in need. They offer families and individuals school supplies, food, diapers, formula, clothing, furniture as well as other resources and support around the holidays. Founder, Dawn Lang, said “In 2014, I realized that there was a real need in my local community. Many people “in need” have jobs, sometimes more than one, and are still struggling to “get by” sometimes having to make a difficult decision of whether to pay a bill or buy food / diapers. Some have family and friends to lean on but many others do not. Supervisor Romaine Urges Brookhaven Pool Owners to Participate in NYS DEC’s Annual Citizen Science Survey for Invasive Species
Survey goal to locate Asian Longhorned Beetle infestation and protect trees Supervisor Ed Romaine is asking Brookhaven Town swimming pool owners to participate in the annual New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) “Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) Swimming Pool Survey.” The goal of the survey is to locate infestations of these invasive pests before they cause serious damage to trees throughout the Town. Asian Longhorned Beetles are most active during late summer when they emerge from their host tree as adults. The DEC is asking pool owners to periodically check their
filters for insects that resemble Asian Longhorned Beetles and report then by emailing photos to foresthealth@dec.ny.gov or mailing insects to the DEC’s Forest Health Diagnostics Lab at 108 Game Farm Road, Delmar, NY 12054, Attn: Liam Somers. Residents who do not own a pool can also participate. The invasive Asian Longhorned Beetle is approximately 1.5 inches long, black with white spots, and black and white antennae. They have caused the death of hundreds of thousands of trees across the country. Although the Asian Longhorned Beetle has been successfully eradicated from parts of Long Island, it is still active in

Supervisor Romaine said, “If not kept under control, the Asian Longhorned Beetle could be as devastating as the Southern Pine Beetle, which has destroyed thousands of trees on Long Island. I thank the DEC for initiating this program to help preserve the trees in the Town of Brookhaven.”

Permanent Housing Advisory Board Approved
SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN The Suffolk County Legislature last week approved the creation of a Permanent Housing Advisory Board to focus on housing discrimination here. The formation of a 15-person board follows a three-year investigation by Newsday which, as the measure establishing the board noted, “uncovered extensive evidence of impermissible steering of consumers seeking to purchase a home” and this “on the basis of race” and “throughout Long Island.” “This practice,” it went on, “has reinforced racial divides throughout communities, despite fair housing laws which prohibit such pernicious discrimination.” Among members of the board: the presiding officer of the Suffolk Legislature who would be its chair; the executive director and also chair of the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission; representatives of organizations including: the NAACP; Latino Justice; Long Island Board of Realtors; Erase Racism; Long Island Builders Institute; Long Island Hispanic Bar Association; and Long Island Housing Services. Formation of the board was recommended in a report of a Fair Housing Task Force, formed in the wake of the Newsday series, which recommended such a “standing” panel. It was was submitted to the legislature in June. The Newsday series was titled “Long
Island Divided.” As Newsday investigative reporter Keith Herbert wrote in a piece on “How We Did It”—“Two testers of the same gender and age bracket—but of different races or ethnicities—are given matching personas. The profiles typically include the same family status, education level, type of job, level of income and credit score. After being matched in a pair, the testers tell a real estate agent that they are searching for houses with identical qualities, prices and locations.”

In my Investigative Reporting class which I’ve taught for 43 years as a journalism professor at SUNY/College at Old Westbury, as part of students actually doing investigative reporting, every semester some students seek to go out in Suffolk and Nassau Counties in mixed pairs racially or ethnically to look for apartments or jobs. I tell students that I wish by now they wouldn’t find discrimination. But they always do.
As declares the Fair Housing Task Force report in an opening “Background” section, “Suffolk County has a long history of redlining and other housing policies that have led to segregation. A 2010 study conducted by Brown University Professor John Logan showed that Suffolk County was the 10th most segregated county in the nation among similarly sized counties.”
What’s to be done?
Among the many recommendations of the Fair Housing Task Force is “increased support for the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission.” It says: “In particular, increased funding and support for the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission
There have been attacks on the commission through the decades. Suffolk County’s first county executive, H. Lee Dennison, fired the commission’s dedicated executive director, George Pettingill. Anthony Noto, presiding officer of the Suffolk Legislature, was later to call for abolition of the commission after it pressed against discrimination by police. There have been other political assaults. Meanwhile, the population of Suffolk has increased and racism continues as the Newsday investigation showed.

BY TOM BARTON The New York Yankees began last Friday (MLB’s trade deadline day) 8 1/2 games behind the Red Sox for the division and 3 1/2 games in back of a Wild Card berth. They ended Friday in the same exact position in the standings but the fan base has been energized and the team has a completely different look. On our Wanna Bet?! show we spoke with Yankees announcer Michael Kay and MLB Yankee insider Bryan Hoch about the deadline and both were fairly adamant with the idea that the Bombers didn’t need Trevor Story or Kris Bryant, but rather they needed a left handed hitter. New York also has some key areas that needed addressing as well like their defense and on base percentage. Enter Brian Cashman. The Yankees General Manager has lived a pretty charmed life in the Big Apple but the whispers of his non performance have grown into
the lineup he would lead the Yankees in most offensive categories. The thing is he isn’t just a big bopper. He is athletic and brings with him a Gold Glove and the ability to play various positions, including centerfield.
All of that changed before the deadline ran out Friday at 4 p.m.. Cashman looked like Teddy KGB from Rounders when he pushed all in and out came not one, but two fantastic fits for the franchise. Joey Gallo was a target for weeks, if not months, and there is good reason why. Gallo has massive power from the left side, and he is an on base machine. He’s currently having a season where he is at a career low in K%, which is still high at 32.2% and a career high in walk rate, at 19.1%. That’s a patient, albeit flawed hitter. Over his last 162 games he has hit 37 homers, with 106 walks and if his numbers this season were plugged into
Anthony Rizzo has a similar profile. Rizzo is an on base machine and although his best days might be behind him he is still only 31 years old. Rizzo was a team captain in his early 20’s and is a proven winner. He also brings an element the Yanks can use and that is defense. He has won 4 Gold Gloves himself and the improvement to approach and defense can’t be understated.

The majority of ESPN leagues enforce some sort of trading deadline. Week #20-#22 tend to be the most common deadlines found, or dates in mid to late August. August 20th is the deadline for trades in my mixed league and closers are always hot items on other owners’ shopping lists. The major league trading deadline just passed last week on July 30th and the activity up to the deadline was fast and furious. A lot of playing opportunities have opened up as a result of these trades, so let’s take an early look. • The Kansas City Royals starting rotation will be bringing up some of their talented starting pitching prospects they’ve acquired recently through drafting college prospects such as Jackson Kowar and Asa Lacy. The room for this to happen is thanks to their deadline deal sending Danny Duffy to the LA Dodgers for a player to be named later. • The Washington Nationals traded RP-Brad Hand to Toronto right before the deadline, which is bad news for Brad Hand owners as Toronto has a crowded bullpen. However, Washington looked likely to make their new closer Daniel Hudson, but then he landed on the COVID-19 list and this certainly now looks like a closer-by-committee.

• The NY Yankees are laying it all on the line by acquiring OF Joey Gallo and 1B-Anthony Rizzo. But they did part with a big time emerging name in INFEzequiel Duran. Going into the 2021 season, Duran was ranked as the 6th best prospect in the Yankees system, and he has hit well in Low Class-A this season with a .907 OPS season to date. Texas demoted 2B-Nick Solak who was big time struggling this season with a batting average in the .220’s. Duran is at least two seasons of development time away from the majors, but he is a name worth watching.
This trade deadline the Yankees had to make a decision. Buyers or sellers? Put it all on the line or cut your losses? Cashman went all in, and not only did he go all in, he also did it without giving up any of his top 9 minor league prospects
... oh and he got the Rangers and Cubs to pay the salaries to boot. No matter the outcome of this season no one can
say that New York didn’t have the feel of the Boss’s Yankees. Now let’s see if the southpaws can pay off.
It’s Been a Good Baseball Season Josh Smith. This is pure nonsense. The Yankees spent their 2019 #1 draft pick on Anthony Volpe and he has been unbelievable. Volpe tore up Low Class A Tampa. In 199 at bats he delivered 18 doubles, 5 triples, 12 home runs and 21 stolen bases to 5 caught stealing. Volpe
already after his promotion Volpe has hit 3 home runs already and again has maintained his OPS at over 1.000. This is a rising star and so the Yankees used their ample depth with Volpe to deal another promising prospect to make a stretch run with Joey Gallo. Speaking
• The Houston Astros added RP’s Kendall Graveman and Rafael Montero to bolster their bullpen, and the presence of Ryan Pressley in Houston’s bullpen already isn’t great news for owners of Graveman. He won’t dominate in saves out of the Astros’ bullpen. • One of the earliest deadline trades was sending Nelson Cruz to the Tampa Bay Rays for starting pitcher prospect Joe Ryan. Ryan went into the 2021 season ranked outside the Top 10 prospects in the Rays system. Make no mistake though, both Ryan and Drew Strotman, also acquired from the Rays, will both be mid-rotation starters in the major leagues. The Tampa Bay Rays have one of the most consistent player development systems in all of baseball. There is a lot of quality in their Top 10 Prospect List each and every season.
• The Chicago Cubs have begun their purge and in addition to moving Rizzo to the Yankees, they are expected to move LF-Kris Bryant and RP-Craig Kimbrel. Since multiple Cubs are nearly certain to be leaving, 30 year old LF’er Rafael Ortega looks to be a clear beneficiary for more playing time. Though a journeyman, the playing time increase is a clear advantage to teams playing in NL-only formats. • The Texas Ranger also acquired shortstop prospect Josh Smith from the Yankees in the Joey Gallo trade and some press coverage is declaring that the Yankees cleared out their middle infield in giving up both Ezequiel Duran and

walked 51 times and struck out only 43 times. I love players that do that and Volpe had a 1.078 OPS. He earned a promotion to High Class-A and has turned it up several notches. In 12 games
of Gallo, this is a player who is custom made for the dimensions of Yankee Stadium and the short porch in right field will become a favorite target for Gallo.
• As we went to press this week, the Washington Nationals were close to a major deal sending Trea Turner and Max Scherzer to the Dodgers for a bevy of prospects. Star prospect C-Keibert Ruiz is said to be the centerpiece of the offer. Ruiz is blocked from playing time from the superior Will Smith, but would become a likely candidate to take the starting spot from catcher Yan Gomes.

Each of these pillars encompasses a variety of programs that benefit our nation’s veterans, its service members, their families, the youth of America and ordinary citizens. The programs make a difference in hundreds of thousands of lives each year. In 1919 the Legion is the chartering agency for more than 1,700 scouting units with approximately 65,000 youths. In 1935 the first Boy’s State convened to help youths gain an understanding of the structure and operation of the federal government. The first Boys Nation, bringing together youth leadership from all the Boy State programs in 1946. Today, more than 19500 young men participate in Boys State
and in Boys Nation, from 49 of the 50 states.

Revocable and Irrevocable Trusts
Q: How do I know if I need a revocable or irrevocable trust? A:
Deciding if you need a trust depends on what type of trust would benefit you and your individual goals, concerns, assets, and family situation. One size does not fit all.
First things first, what is a “living trust”? A living trust is a document created during your lifetime that, once signed, becomes a legal entity that can own assets. The document provides the rules of the game. The trust document directs how the assets are managed and used during your lifetime, during any period of incapacity, and at your death. You do not need to be a Rockefeller to set up a trust – such trusts benefit almost anyone who wants the most seamless transition of their assets at death or during incapacity. Creators of revocable trusts retain full control over trust assets during

In this type of trust, the creator of the trust can reserve certain powers including the power to remove and replace trustees, the power to change beneficiaries, and the ability to receive all income generated by trust assets. Another common type of irrevocable trust is an irrevocable life insurance trust (ILIT), which is used to remove the death benefit of life insurance from the creator’s taxable estate. With an ILIT, the creator needs to give up enough control so that the IRS recognizes the completed gift.

While there is great flexibility with the revocable trust, it does not provide much in the way of protection. A revocable trust is used primarily for the purpose of avoiding the probate process and for efficient management and administration of assets. If your goals are to protect assets to gain eligibility for government benefits or to remove assets from your estate to minimize or eliminate estate taxes, a revocable trust is not the right tool for you. A trust that is “irrevocable” is one that restricts the creator from revoking or amending the trust terms, but they do not necessarily lose all control. For

For instance, that of Daniel in the lions’ den. While traveling through Babylon Daniel found himself in trouble with certain religious sects. The majority of the city residents worshipped the pagan god Baal. Baal’s likeness was engraved on a statue outside a magnificent temple. Daniel mocked the false god.
